Diggerland Unveils Attraction For Grown-Ups Diggerland USA, the WestBerlin based theme park known for letting children and parents operate real heavy machinery, is now offering supersized heavy equipment for adults. The newest adult-sized addition to the park, Diggerland XL, opened in April, and offers guests ages 18 and over the opportunity to have unrestricted fun on giant pieces of construction equipment. “Since we opened in 2014, we’ve received hundreds of inquiries asking if our construction theme park is suitable for

adults,” Ilya Girlya, co-owner of Diggerland USA, said. “We have plenty of adults visit without kids and they have a great time, so we wanted to take that one step further with Diggerland XL.” Visitors will be able to select from a combination of three different machines, a full-sized wheel loader, excavator or bulldozer in either a 90-minute or three-hour package. Both packages include 30 minutes of one-on-one instruction from a heavy machinery foreman prior to playing on the machines. “Diggerland XL is for people who want to really experience the big pieces of equipment and see what the can do,” Yan Girlya, coowner of Diggerland USA, said. “If you have seen these massive machines in action, they’re really impressive. This is unrestricted, full-size equipment.” Guests operating the machines will get the chance to do more than just move dirt and mimic the

activities on a construction site, they will also get to play some heavy machinery games. From excavator basketball to the water wheel loader challenge, Diggerland XL combines the experience of operating real construction equipment with unique, hands-on fun for adults who would never

have this opportunity. Diggerland USA is currently open on weekends, and will be open daily starting on June 13. Reservations for Diggerland XL can be made online for any time the theme park is open. ■ For information, visit diggerlandusa.com.

No joke, it’s a Great Adventure When putting together that must-do summer fun list, there’s a good chance New Jersey residents, along with those from the surrounding states, are likely to put Six Flags Great Adventure towards the top. The Joker may be the talk of the highly anticipated summer blockbuster “Suicide Squad,” but the insane villain is also expected wreck havoc with Great Adventure thrill seekers. The Joker — a brand new 4D, free-fly coaster — is making its home on the Lakefront. Riders will sit in wing seats outside the track to be lifted

straight up a 12-story, 90-degree hill. If flipping head-over-heels at least six times along the seemingly weightless journey sounds too rough, consider watching from a distance. For those seeking something a little tamer, the chance to hang out with Bugs Bunny and friends will likely do the trick. The Looney Tunes pals hold a dance party several times a day at the Main Street Fountain. Others may prefer up-close encounter with the 1,200 animals from continents while riding in style on the Safari Off Road Adventure. We are talking elephants, rhinos, tigers, giraffes and lions. The fictional Wilds Family “have traveled the globe to bring the most interesting and exotic creatures to their 350-acre preserve in Jackson, N.J.” Wait times cane exceed two hours for this extremely popular attraction. At Camp Adventura, riders can take a zipline over the safari, feed a giraffe or

meet some of the smaller animals. There are plenty of special events to enjoy, too, starting with Celebration with Jeremy Camp on May 21 followed by Daya and Jay Sean on May 28.

The Mirage is opening Memorial Day weekend

Sahara Sam’s newest expansion featuring a family leisure pool and two additional water slides officially has a name and an opening date. The 10,000-square-foot addition to the park is being called the Mirage; keeping up with the existing desert oasis theme of the other 70,000 square feet of the indoor water park. It will officially open to the public on May 27th, the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. “We are excited to do our part to help kick off the summer season in South Jersey with the grand opening of the Mirage and opening of the Beach Club falling on Memorial Day weekend,” Ilya Girlya, CEO of Sahara Sam’s, said. “The leisure pool and two slides are going to be really unique add-ons; providing our guests with even more excitement and value.” The slides are the first of their kind in New Jersey, allowing guests to race one another down 300-foot-long courses. The pair of colorful 14

head-first, mat racer slides stand tall at 55-feet-high and are currently visible to travelers on Route 73. The other part of the addition is a family leisure pool with integrated seating so guests can lounge and relax while swimming. Construction on the Mirage started in November 2015 and is the water park’s first expansion since joining Apex Parks Group, one of the largest owners of Family Entertainment Centers in the United States. Access to the Mirage will be included with the park’s general admission ticket ($29.95) and accessible to annual pass holders at no additional cost. Guests who want to enjoy the Mirage all year-round can take advantage of discounted memberships during the final spring sale, which ends when the new facility officially opens. ■ For information, visit saharasams.com.

Ready to make a summer splash at The Funplex The unofficial start to summer — Memorial Day weekend — is the perfect time of year to introduce a new outdoor adventure to customers. Burlington County residents familiar with the Mount Laurel-based Funplex, an awardwinning 25 acre indoor and outdoor amusement center hosting more than 500,000 guests annually, will soon have a very good reason to spend their time outdoors thanks to the Splashplex opening this summer (exact date was not available at press time). The expansion will feature all new innovative slides, a lazy river, expanded pool and much more. The Splashplex addition will compliment the already enormously popular outdoor area. Guests will have the opportunity to race each other down two 45-feet high slides called the Hammerhead Heat and the Great White. The new Aquastrictor is an inner tube tunnel-slide, partially translucent, featuring an enclosed tunnel where riders may choose to ride single or with a friend. Riders can expect to enjoy some thrills on this one, as the slide will periodically get wider and then tighten. The Twisting Torpedo is a winding open-top

tunnel ride that will take riders on a spiraling 395-foot journey. Those seeking something a little more relaxing can take a ride on the Reefway River, a 500-foot lazy river that will take guests on an under-thesea raceway journey around the whole waterpark. The Splashplex will also introduce an all-new 3,000 square foot activity pool, with a cascading waterfall, basketball nets, interactives and underwater seating. Fun seekers will also have access to new changing rooms and food service areas, as well as a larger parking lot where free parking is offered year-round. The Cabanas will feature a private lounge experience within the waterpark. In the evening, there will be a light-

ing package to accommodate waterpark events and a surround sound speaker system. Entertainment events will periodically occur throughout the summer, with Splashplex Live-DJ’s, games and much more — free to all Splashplex guests. “We cannot express how thrilled we are to bring this type of immense expansion to our guests. The Splashplex attractions are the absolute top-of-the-line and most innovative available for water attractions today,” Randall Lahn, spokesman for the Lahn family, owners and operators of the Funplex in Mount Laurel and East Hanover, said. WhiteWater, highly regarded as the original Waterpark and Attrac-

tion Company, manufactures all of Splashplex’s water attractions. The Funplex also added a 16,000-square-foot indoor addition in November called The Boardwalk at The Funplex, which quickly has became a family favorite. Visitors can now enjoy family fun indoor entertainment with a new boardwalk game, a new highflying adventure ride Air Shot, an all-new remodeled Indoor Go-Kart Track, an indoor Tilt-AWhirl, and more concession space at the Boardwalk Café. ■

The Funplex is conveniently located on Route 38 East in Mount Laurel. For information, call 856-273-9061 or visit funplexmountlaurel.com.

Warm weather has arrived, and the welcoming temperatures are once again beckoning people to the great outdoors. Fishing is a popular warm weather pastime, and it’s important to take an environmentally responsible approach when fishing. According to Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them, by Ted Danson, in just 55 years, humans have been able to eradicate about 90 percent of the ocean’s top predators. These include animals like sharks, marlin, king mackerel, and bluefin tuna. Smaller species also are being wiped out at alarming rates because fishing nets capture far more than is intended, and today’s fishing vessels can zero in on large schools of fish relatively easily. Thanks to global positioning technology and sonar capabilities, there’s no longer too much surprise in the chase. Commercial fishing may do the brunt of the damage, but amateurs also can contribute to the contamination of waterways and decimation of fish species. People of different cultures have fished sustainably for decades, and anyone can follow their guidelines — and some others — to help keep ocean life healthy. • Disturb wildlife as little as possible. When traveling into delicate ecosystems, such as those that pri-

marily surround the water’s edge, do so with care. Operating a boat in shallow regions can chop up underwater vegetation or harm fish that live in the shallows. Don’t remove crustaceans or take plants or other wildlife out of the area. • Keep track of gear. Discarded or lost fishing gear can prove harmful to wildlife. It’s easy for fish or other marine animals to get tangled in fishing line and hooks that were left behind by fishermen. Sinkers and other weights may be mistaken for food and injure unsuspecting animals. Even animals like ducks and other birds can swallow fishing tackle, which can lead to illness or starvation. Don’t just abandon gear. • Fish specific species at different times. Fishing specific species helps maintain different stocks of fish at various times of the year. Plus, you’ll help guarantee that one species will not be over-fished, potentially leading to under-population or extinction. • Avoid the use of cast nets or dragnets. Cast nets or dragnets can capture too many fish, including ones that you did not intend to take in. Responsible fishing can help maintain water ecosystems and protect the surrounding environment.

W

alking through the Stoogeum can be overwhelming, but that’s how curator Gary Lassin prefers it. The tri-level museum of Three Stooges memorabilia in Ambler wastes little space. The walls are lined, floor to ceiling, with photographs, show posters, merchandise, artwork and more remnants from the decades-long slapstick comedy act. The 10,000-square-foot space holds almost 100,000 pieces of Stooge memorabilia from the early 1900s to present. “The Stooges were like human cartoons,” Lassin recalled. “There was nothing else like them.” You could say Lassin’s collection started as a matter of “soicumstance” — he married into the family. Lassin’s wife Robin is the granddaughter of Morris Feinberg, Stooge Larry Fine’s brother. But it’s not as if the museum is made up of only personal items that belonged to Larry Fine. Lassin’s collection is thorough, brought together from years of hands-on searching.

Several cases hold articles of clothing worn by the Stooges onstage or in films. There are seemingly endless autographed photographs on the walls, inter-

like personal letters written by the Stooges, telegrams sent to family and artists contracts that outline the terms of performance agreements. Lassin’s favorite item, he said, is

national show posters, advertisements, games, personal items and artwork made by the Stooges themselves. The Stoogeum even holds items

Shemp Howard’s discharge from the U.S. Army, dated in 1917. It was signed Samuel Horowitz, his given name, and the reason listed is “bedwetting.”

It’s items like these that keep Lassin collecting. The Holy Grail of Stooge memorabilia, he said, has probably yet to be found. “It’s probably something we don’t know about, like a letter Curly wrote home from camp,” he said. “We don’t even know if he went to camp.” The Stoogeum is also the headquarters of the Three Stooges Fan Club, with 2,200 members worldwide. People also come from all over to visit the Stoogeum. The guest book lists visitors from as far as Florida and California. “There’s no way to explain it, just like you can’t explain any fandom,” Lassin said. “Something you get attached to in your youth, it sticks with you. This was part of my generation’s identity, these characters that we grew up on as kids.” 904 Sheble Lane in Ambler, PA. Open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or weekdays by appointment. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, military and students with ID, and children under 12 are free. For information, visit www.stoogeum.com.

country twang and jazz swing, was pioneered by the likes of Gene Vincent, Johnny Burnette and Buddy Holly in the 50s. It’s since spawned variations incorporating punk and metal, and modern rock and country. But at the V, the bands that come in stick to the music’s roots. The acts vary from local groups

like the Ultra Kings or Dibbs Preston to out-of-towners like Sean K. Preston or Lara Hope and the Arktones. They play traditional rockabilly, early rock and occasionally country or swing music, accommodating a crowd that likes to dance. But the bands are just one part of what

makes each Sunday night special. The audience can range in age from people in their 20s to those in their 80s. And, yes, many of them dress the part: polka-dot skirts and dresses on women; slacks and white shoes or greasedup hairdos for men.

On Stage at the Bucks County Playhouse

When the Bucks County Playhouse originally opened in 1939, New Hope, Pennsylvania was still a summer retreat destination for

people in Philadelphia and New York. Today, the area is a cultural hub of its own and the Playhouse has been a part of it again since re-

opening in 2012. “There’s a lot of pride in New Hope for the Playhouse, and seeing that excitement is great,” said Mandee Kuenzle, publicist for the Playhouse. In its heyday, the theater was well known for its summer stock performances, productions that occurred outside the normal fallthrough-spring theater season. Plays as famous as “Barefoot in the Park” and careers as wellknown as Grace Kelly’s got their starts on its stage.

Today, that tradition continues with a season that starts in the spring and runs through the summer. Highlights from this season include: Steel Magnolias May 27 to June 18

At Truvy’s Beauty Salon, the hair is big and the gossip is juicy. While their coifs are perfected and daily lives debated, six distinctly different women forge a unique bond of sisterhood. The 22

cast includes Elaine Hendrix (FX’s Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll), Patricia Richardson (Home Improvement, The West Wing), Susan Sullivan (Castle, Falcon Crest) and Jessica Walter (Arrested Development, Play Misty for Me).

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story June 24 to July 16

From his meteoric rise to fame in 1957 through his tragic death less than two years later, Buddy Holly influenced modern music like no other performer of his generation. Featuring more than 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest hits, including That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Everyday, and Not Fade Away.

Cake Off! August 19 - Sept. 10

Bucks County Playhouse mounts this new musical. At the 50th Annual Millberry Cake Off, the stakes are high – one million dollars for the best homemade sugary delight!. Things start to heat up when men are allowed to compete for the first time. For information, visit www.bcptheater.org.

hike. When hiking, it’s best to go in pairs. In the event anything occurs, such as an injury, the other hiker will be able to go for help. Hikers also should alert people at home as to their itineraries. Leave a map and plot out where you will be, especially if hikes take you off the beaten path. Remember to pack a portable snack and plenty of water. And when out in the sun, apply sunscreen and reapply as needed.

Horseback riding

Nature takes on an entirely different look when you are atop a

horse. Horseback riding isn’t just for country folk or cowboys, and it can be a great workout as well as a recreational retreat. It takes balance, strong legs and quick reflexes to stay in a saddle. Those interested in horseback riding should visit a stable or riding academy nearby. You likely do

not need to own a horse of your own, as riding schools and stables will have animals you can work with.

Remember to wear the right clothing, including long pants and boots, for riding. A hat can shade you from the overhead sun, while a helmet is advisable for people new to the sport or those who want added protection. Always arrive early so that you can familiarize yourself with your horse and have him or her get to know you. Approach the horse from the front left side. Horses are prey animals and can be skittish by nature, so a firm, calm greeting can reassure the animal. These are just a few of the many outdoor activities people can enjoy when the weather warms up. Try taking exercise routines outdoors, such as running on a path instead of the treadmill. Swimming, walking, gardening, and sports activities are other fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors.
