The Headmaster What a remarkable year 2016/17 has been for children at Packwood including 25 scholarships won by our leavers, all successfully going on to their 13+ senior schools of choice both in the local area and right across the UK. The mix of scholarships in academics, music, sport and drama reflects the outstanding breadth of education on offer at Packwood. This year has seen the children enjoy more opportunities than ever to learn and play in our beautiful grounds with, amongst many other things, Roman and Greek mornings, an outdoor learning Sixes’ off-curriculum day, poetry classes in the Headmaster’s garden, creature hunts and regular Forest School sessions for the younger children. Music continues to be a major strength of the school and the year ended with our best summer concert for many years. Drama continues to go from strength to strength with the two major productions of Smike and The Sound of Music both being outstanding. Packwood children are accustomed to sporting successes in all manner of sports and this year has been no different with a number of unbeaten sides and teams progressing in regional and national competitions. I hope you enjoy browsing through the pages of this magazine. The content reflects the wide variety of activities available and the great fun that the children have at Packwood. The children are happy and that is very important to me. I would like to thank the magazine’s editor, Cath Hammond, for the huge amount of work she has put into this year’s edition of the Packwoodian. September 2017 sees the start of our 125 th anniversary celebrations. Packwood has stood the test of time and as we move forward, we continue to make sure that the school is fit for purpose in a modern and dynamic world. I would like to thank you for your support for the school and hope to see you at one of our 125th events throughout the course of 2017/18.

ACORNS
MightyOaks in the making As another year ends in Packwood Acorns, I reflect on what a pleasure it is to work with this age group of children. They are such a delight to be around; they genuinely bring a smile to my face with their unfailing enthusiasm and positive attitude to life.
Our themes this year have been ‘Come with me to India’, ‘Ice Worlds’ and ‘Turrets and Tiaras’. The children have become founts of knowledge on subjects as diverse as penguins and castles. They enjoyed a visit to an Indian temple, where we learned about the Hindu deities and how to put on a sari correctly; a trip to Chester Zoo, that included a talk from the penguin keepers and the chance to see the baby elephant and the baby giraffe; a day out at Chirk Castle where we learned that snail juice is a cure for a sore throat; and finally, a visit to Brynkinalt Hall where we got to see a real tiara and two coronets as well as going up a secret staircase in a turret.
The structure of the Acorns’ week continues as before: daily lessons of English and Maths, and phonics sessions; weekly lessons of either French, Spanish In the spring term, The children have or Italian; twice-weekly sessions of PE representatives from four where this summer the children have different charities came to become founts of knowledge been learning to play golf, amongst speak to the Acorns and then on subjects as diverse as other things; and the weekly visits to they took part in a secret ballot penguins and castles Forest School. This year the Acorns have to vote for the charity that won not just a Green Tree School Gold they would like to support. The Award from the Woodland Trust, but result was a close run thing between ISF (a charity that also the ultimate Platinum Award! The children have works with children in Cambodia) and sponsoring a polar showcased their singing and musical talents in our bear. We have now sponsored a polar bear through WWF fabulous termly Open Assemblies – who can forget and the money for this comes from the Christmas cards the Arctic Yoga in the spring term? that parents kindly bought.

ACORNS Over the course of the year, we have had a number of special days. We celebrated Diwali Day where the children all wore their colourful party clothes and the staff were dressed in saris (apart from Mr Stone, obviously). They spent the day learning about Indian stories, Hindu deities, making diva lamps and Indian sweets. The children also had an Indian food tasting – thanks to our catering department for help with that. We visited the village church to decorate the Packwood Christmas tree with decorations made by the Acorns.
Science Day was on the theme of freezing and melting – I loved the bejewelled ice hands. In the summer term, we had an outdoor learning day where the children were set castle-themed problem solving tasks. Finally, I would like to thank all the staff that make Packwood Acorns the happy and vibrant department that it is and to wish the Year 2 Acorns the best of luck with the next stage of their school life as they move up to Year 3. HAPPY FACES/PACKWOOD KITCHENS
First steps What a great year at Happy Faces with lots going on for all. The babies have been using their senses to explore new things such as baked beans and jelly and enjoying messy craft activities. A firm favourite for toddlers is water and sand play, which despite the waterproof aprons, always ends up with them managing to soak themselves! The pre-schoolers have been learning how to share, how to listen and how to become independent, confident learners. Letters and sounds, numbers, colours, shapes and simple science activities are all delivered through play-based activities. They look forward to weekly story sessions with the Headmaster and enjoy visiting Acorns’ Reception class for a story too. PE and swimming lessons have also been a great success. Forest School is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn in an outdoor classroom. A few of the activities have included mud monsters, number conker lines, den building, and making homes for our woodland animals Mr Batty, Harrison Hedgehog and Peter Rabbit.
The C Th Christmas performance of Whoops-as aDaisy Angel was simply brilliant and a greatt way to end 2016. The children were amazing and all their practising and hard work really paid off. In recent months, we have been busy planting vegetables and sunflowers to learn how things grow and we have looked at life cycles, watching our caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies. We enjoyed our annual sports day including some unconventional races devised by the children, such as a relay race with a baby doll instead of a baton, a bouncy-hopper race and a car race with cars they had made with their parents. We celebrated the end of year with a Pirate-themed forest adventure with parents and children – a great time to wish all our leavers well as they move onto school. LR
Fine food and good cheer The Packwood kitchens, as with any family kitchen, are the heart of the school. Not only do we fill the air with wonderful aromas, you can also hear lots of laughter and usually singing coming from our direction – ‘Happy people produce happy food and great service’ is our motto.
The dining room does not just refuel the children with fresh, home-cooked food, but it is also where they come to relax, catch up with friends and enjoy socialising over a delicious meal. Many of the catering team have been at Packwood for years and this reflects their passion and dedication to the school and the children. They are
always friendly, smiling and ready to fulfil any requests where possible. We pride ourselves on serving homemade meals every day, including soups, bread, salads, pies, cakes, desserts and cookies. We have fantastic theme days and events throughout the year: Bonfire Night, the Christmas Feast, Chinese New Year, pizza nights and many more, which the children really enjoy. Our match teas are famous for being the best in the area, with amazing cakes and slices produced with loving care by Sandra, our pastry chef, and of course no match teas would be complete without the infamous Packwood ‘egg mayo’ sandwich! All served by our friendly front of house staff, Caroline and Clare. We have a wealth of experience with chefs Tony and Mike at the helm and the kitchen is always a hive of activity providing three meals a day plus morning and afternoon tea, snacks and drinks.
Here are some fun facts about our productivity: For our favourite meal of spaghetti bolognese, we use 3.25 miles of spaghetti, which would wrap around a football pitch 13 times. We use around 84 litres of milk a day; it takes one cow to produce 21 litres of milk a day so technically we have four cows grazing hard each day on our behalf! We serve approximately 5,400 match teas a year, which is approximately 11,220 pieces of cake and 2,700 sandwiches (of which 900 are egg!). The children have approximately 75,000 homemade biscuits a year for break time.

BOARDING
Life upstairs
I have very much enjoyed my new role as a house parent; I feel that there has been an excellent atmosphere in the house throughout these busy last three terms and I thank the boarders for making this so. Two new members of staff joined us for the year: graduate assistant, Matt Stone and gap student, Harry Spain. Both have been fantastic with the boys and have contributed in so many ways to the smooth running of the house and to the happy environment. They will be greatly missed by both the children and the boarding staff alike.
Life for the boarders has been as full as ever and they have had the opportunity to be involved in some excellent trips and activities. These have included visits to the Blue Planet Aquarium, the Midland Game Fair, The Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford, a theatrical production of Gangsta Granny and a Murder Mystery Trail. They have also been on fishing trips, a bell ringing afternoon and shopping trips to Shrewsbury. At school there’s been the chance to take part in

ACADEMICS
In the classroom, and beyond This was a bumper year academically with Year 8 winning seven academic scholarships to a range of top schools. These included Winchester (our third award there in five years), Rugby, Repton and four to Shrewsbury, including a top, Butler scholarship. Signs lower down the school are also encouraging, with three of our current Year 6 boys accepted at Radley and one to Eton on the strength of their pre-tests, reports and interviews. leavers’ programme. This included hands-on training for all Year 8s in the topical concepts of Grit and Resilience, and a trip to the slavery and Beatles' museums in Liverpool.
Outdoor learning has been a real theme this year, with the whole school enjoying Sixes’ off-curriculum day, including fire building, orienteering and woodland creature activities. We also took the opportunity to enrich the post-exam offering through an activity-based week as part of our
The year group also enjoyed strong Common Entrance results: 90% of papers were graded A*-C. Extra evening revision still begins after the first exeat, and the pupils have also had two sessions on improving their study skills, through an external programme which will be extended down into Year 7 next year. Lower down the school the standard of work has been encouraging, as witnessed through a number of junior 'Work of the Week’ awards, as well as open assemblies and English speaking exam results.
There were a high number of A grades in scholarship Science, with Gorn Namchittai, Dan Richardson, Angus Hill-Trevor, Timothy Antelo, Henry Weir, Louis Graham and Ellie Letts all achieving As. James Mainwaring also distinguished himself amongst the CE cohort for getting As in all three science papers. Exams aside, the senior pupils also enjoyed trips to a local stud farm and Shrewsbury’s chemistry labs. We all look forward to a successful 125 appeal for funds to modernise our very well used laboratories! In English, the boarders enjoyed a typically silly production of David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny at Theatre

In terms of results, there was a very pleasing number of As in some demanding scholarship papers, including Mary Brown (Repton), Poppy Stephens (Shrewsbury), Angus Hill-Trevor (Rugby) and Gorn Namchittai (Winchester). The English CE results were also very strong, with only two papers falling below a C standard. Sincere thanks are due to Ken Webster, who is retiring after steering so many top years through the challenge of Common Entrance with unflappable professionalism. The History department remains highly innovative, developing fresh ideas and approaches to very old stories and achieving the highest number of A grades at CE. This year, the Year 8s visited Holland, learning about William of Orange and Louis XIV, produced a History Play about the French Revolution and spent a thoughtprovoking afternoon at the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. Year 7 recorded reenactments of the first skirmish of the English Civil War and
the trial of Charles I on their iPads. Year 6 trialled pupil-centred-learning preps and activities as they discovered the Tudors. Year 3 enjoyed making mummies (from hotdog sausages) and onagers, fearsome Roman siege weapons.

The Classics department has thrived under new leadership. Ancient Greek has been revived for our brightest pupils, with two of our scholars getting As in the subject, alongside Latin. Amazingly, nearly half of the CE candidates got an A in Latin, with two going better with A*s. The new Classics Reading competition was also very much enjoyed, including a wonderful version of Goldilocks in Latin! The Geography department led the way with a terrific humanities trip to Holland. The annual photography competition included some great entries and a strong Year 8 team came fourth in the Geographical Association Worldwise Quiz against some much

The annual French elocution competition reached its normal very high standards. Many congratulations to all the finalists and in particular to the winners Poppy Besterman (junior), Tom Thurstan (middle) and Venetia Hamilton (senior). We look forward to the return of Packwood’s Day of Languages next year. One of the earliest events in another busy year of competitions, visits and extra-curricular activities was the annual Arts’ Day at Malvern College. The children took photographs of objects in the school grounds, and then transformed them using hi-tech computer programs. The astonishingly good results, from Poppy Besterman and Elsa Waterhouse amongst others, were displayed to great effect on large screens in Malvern’s main hall. The Year 5s visited Manchester Art Gallery, enjoying an environmentally themed art talk and tour, and afterwards a hands-on activity using their ingenuity and imagination to produce an artwork depicting the environment outside the gallery in acetate, coloured tape and stickers. They also made some excellent sketches of works by the ‘Monet of the North’, Wynford Dewhurst, whose colourful paintings were on display.

Children in Years 6 and 7 took part in a competition entitled Organic/Mechanic. They had great fun creating their 2D or 3D works and Genevieve Bright came second, out of 400 entries, with her imaginative sculpture of a mechanical tree. Orlando Bayliss, Memie Sripen, Alex Barry, Daniel Garrett, Tom Williams, George Stanford-Davies and Elsa Waterhouse entered the Satips annual art exhibition at Cheltenham College where their work made a great impression on visitors, and at the Stowe School Exhibition, all the Packwood entries won praise for the high standard of their work, including pieces by Liberty Clarke, Bobby Boyes and Orlando Bayliss. In the annual Millicent Kaye Art Competition, Freddie Timmis won third prize out of 300 entries and Tom Williams and Monty Pemberton were Highly Commended. Some excellent art has been on display around school: African masks, Celtic pottery, glazed Chinese horses, surrealistic art, and pieces based on the theme of reflections. Many children won prizes for the Picture of The Week with subjects ranging from horses to Pokémon characters. We have also done some outdoor art, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy’s work. During their special post-CE activity week, the Year 8s worked in their Sixes’ teams to construct an arch weaving willow canes together over a tyre ‘former’ which was removed when the arch was complete. A similar activity formed part of the Sixes’ Outdoor Learning Day in July and was again a great success. I am looking forward to next year in the art department, to some new visits and activities in the ever-evolving syllabus, and to working with many potential art scholars preparing their portfolios. MUSIC
Musical notes As an organist, I am a huge fan of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. However, I do wish that his assertion that “it is easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself” was as easy as it sounds! In the main school, 125 or so children learn an instrument, singing or both, so maybe I should pass on Bach’s advice to them – wouldn’t morning music practice sessions be simple?! It is excellent to see how popular extra-curricular music is at Packwood and how much enjoyment many children gain from playing or singing, both alone and with an ensemble or choir. This can start from the very early stages of learning music, and children are encouraged to play in ensembles after relatively few lessons. At the other end of the scale, it is just as gratifying to see those musicians who were once beginners leave Packwood intending to continue with their music in various forms at senior school. There is always a lot on in the Music Department, and it has been good to have some innovations this year. The Junior Chamber Choir, expertly run by Mrs Besterman, has given selected children from Years 3-5 the chance to take their singing further, singing more demanding music in parts; this choir has had an extremely successful first year, including some fine public performances in church
and concerts. Adults have been singing too, and the older choristers were joined at the Carol Service by a group of staff, who learnt and performed the anthem Gaudete alongside the children. New or one-off events have also given many children the chance to take part in music out of school this year. Shrewsbury School’s inaugural Prep Schools Choral Day was a great success. The Girls’ Choir enjoyed singing at the wedding of Old Packwoodian, Olivia Fisher, in Shrewsbury’s Roman Catholic Cathedral. Year 8 choristers entertained the residents of an old people’s home as part of their post-exam activities week. Several children travelled to London to take part in a Boarding Schools’ Association singing event;

Of course, there have been many musical successes throughout the year, both small and great. Louis Graham (Shrewsbury), Honor Grigg (Moreton Hall), Sebastian Marmont (Wrekin) should all be particularly congratulated for their senior school Music Scholarship successes, and we will also be very sorry to lose Rowena Jones, who has contributed a huge amount to Packwood music over many years, as she takes up her
Two highlights of the year for me both happened within the final week of term: the choir trip to sing Evensong in Worcester Cathedral and the extremely enjoyable Summer Concert, including a grand finale by the COPS (and accompanying fireworks).

DRAMA
Stage-struck This year the senior play was a full-blown musical, Smike. Based on Charles Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby, it was a rollercoaster of poignant contrasts. We were delighted that two eminent guests came to our performances: Mark Dickens, the great, great grandson of Charles Dickens, and Simon May, the composer and writer of Smike (and composer of the EastEnders theme tune!). The actors were on excellent form. Jack Yeoward, our drama scholar, played Nickleby with presence and compassion, making us believe in his empathy for the young boy Smike, and his fellow pupils. Eve Leslie, as Smike played the part with a telling sense of hopelessness culminating in her moving and exquisite rendition of Parents. Will Kimberley as the dreadful Mr Squeers conveyed his offhand vicious cruelty while still exploiting the humorous side of his character with real skill. Genevieve Bright was magnificent as Mrs Squeers, showing the vile evil side to her nature but forever fawning lovingly over her husband. Memie Sripen as the daughter, Fanny, revealed her obvious crush on
Nickleby with a wonderful ticklish humour. In fact, the whole cast really gelled together. The solos were of a high standard and the chorus’ singing was full of energy, skilfully conveying pathos, misery, and joy. In the finale, the whole cast sang two uplifting numbers; the last song Dotheboys Rock led by the charismatic Isabel Morris, was an entertainment in itself.

DRAMA
The junior play, directed by the talented Mrs Williams, was Packwood’s cut down version of The Sound of Music. The juniors rose to the challenge in style. The confidence of these young performers was remarkable – they sang and acted with such self-assurance and immersed themselves completely in their parts. Florence Acton gave a stunning performance as Maria, superbly conveying her character’s love of life, kindness and empathy. The seven rather cheeky and troublesome von Trapp children were wonderfully acted by Lulu Bright, Rufus Farmer, Claudia Tate, Imogen Macey, Wilf Peers, Sienna Matson and the very impressive eight-year-old Millie Parry. Tom Thurstan played Captain von Trapp with a

tangible feeling of pent up control, while Lucy Mielczarek, played The Reverend Mother with an authoritative calmness. As well as Florence who sang so beautifully throughout, solos by Tom Thurstan, Keith Au Yeung and contributions from the von Trapp children deserve great praise. It was truly an uplifting production! Besides our major productions, there was lots more going on. Year 7s enjoyed creating plays-in-a-day, and then performing their finished products to the rest of the school. Years 3, 4 and 5 all practised their own mini-plays in drama lessons and performed them in assembly to their parents, and the whole school. The Three Billy Goats, The Boy who cried Wolf, Matilda who told such dreadful Lies, and Planet Grammar! were all very much a class effort, with everybody getting their own speaking part. The children have really relished the drama clubs and I am glad to say an increasing number have been studying for LAMDA exams. It has been another fun and fulfilling year. RHC

1st XI
Other than thick fog at Abberley, Lost 3 the weather was kind this year and we managed to play all of our fixtures in a season where the team developed in both confidence and ability. There was a good mix of Year 7s and 8s with a competitive second XI, who pushed for places constantly – games sessions were hotly contested and very tight. As in seasons past, the boys faced stiff challenges early on against Prestfelde and Foremarke. However, after more practice sessions and matches against similar opposition, the tide turned and towards the end of the season, they played some quality football. Orlando grew in confidence in goal and made some outstanding saves. Our backs worked tirelessly, with James picking up his colours for his effort and application. Louis, who started in the seconds, soon became one of the first names on the team sheet. Archie, Wilbur and Jorge gave us great width and tore into the opposition whenever
they could. Freddie, Henry and Nacho all provided plenty of heart and aggression. Spearheading the attack was Archie, who should pose a real threat next year and Jack, a quality striker who scored four in our final match of the season, all with his head! Well done to all. Squad: Freddie Cox* (Capt) James Pickering*, Seb Marmont, Louis Graham, Jago Ainslie, Jack Yeoward*, Henry Barlow, Wilbur Blackham, Archie McParland, Orlando Bayliss, Archie Barlow, Jorge Fernandez Puig and Nacho Calbeto Llopart. Some ups and downs in terms of Lost 1 results, but the seconds always tried to play an attractive style of football with many of our players comfortable in possession of the ball and overall, the team made good progress. With more than half the boys in Year 7, the team probably lacked on
the physical side, but the quality of our passing and movement impressed most observers. The highlight of our season was the performance against Foremarke, although sadly, Foremarke equalised with the last kick of the game to disappoint the Packwood supporters! Lucas Calbeto had his most influential game in midfield setting up and scoring a couple of well-taken goals. The goal of the season though must be Edward Forde-Johnston’s long-range strike in the Shrewsbury match. A terrific effort! This was a very enjoyable season for me as all the players improved significantly in their performances and contributions on the pitch. It will be very interesting next year to see many of these same faces in the first XI as we work to progress further. We had a strong squad this year and achieved some memorable wins, Lost 2 including a well-fought early season victory against Abberley and an emphatic defeat of Prestfelde. In this key game, Morgan opened up play beautifully down the right wing, setting up two goals each for Kutenda and Johnny. We also hosted a final Moffats’ first XI, narrowly losing a 13-goal-fest, and were well beaten by Foremarke. The squad contained a good mix of third XI old hands and exciting Year 7s, several of whom should make the higher teams next season. 4th XI How can it be that a coach who can produce a team with a 100% record is left languishing with the fourths and fifths? What was Mr Phillips thinking?
The fourths this year took to the field with controlled anger, determination and skill. With the coach offering gems from the sideline such as “Kick it!” and “Half time has gone and we are playing in the other direction” and most usefully of all, “We are the team in green”, the lads swept all before them. The boys worked extremely hard this season and maintained an impressive Lost 3 attitude. One of my favourite games was against Terra Nova; their passing was excellent and they kept their shape well, managing a tremendous 7-0 win. Another memorable match was against Abberley; it was a very tight game and 2-2 with a few seconds to go when Tom Thurstan scored an excellent winner. Carlos and Finn had scored the earlier goals. Carlos deserves a special mention; he scored numerous hattricks and played with tremendous determination, skill and an unselfish attitude, a superb effort.

The Under 11Bs really developed their skills and awareness during Lost 4 the season, and were a pleasure to coach. We were aiming for ‘a beautiful passing game’, and though they didn’t always succeed, they were always trying to play the right way! The team was based around a solid, intelligent defence of Archie Tulloch, our captain, and Freddie Shute. Ollie Bing in goal made some outstanding saves. In midfield, the silky skills of Keith Au Yeung, and the hard working William Hughes stood out. Up front was Elliot Goddard: developing his skills all the time, he was a magnificent finisher. Highlight of the season was a terrific 4-4 draw against Foremarke Under 10A team, with Elliot shocking our opponents with four top quality goals. Having found their positional niches quickly in the first few weeks Packwood Tournament 4th of term, the girls learned to adapt their abilities to the game and rely on each other for support, moving the ball quickly around the pitch and proving at times an impressive attacking unit. They scored some well-crafted goals with everyone having a touch of the ball before slotting it past the keeper. Through regular training, and the added bonus of the whole squad being selected for Shropshire’s JAC training, their understanding of the game and their ability on and off the ball greatly improved leading to some excellent scores against Bromsgrove and Moreton. However, the season’s highlight came at the Denstone tournament where they were only beaten in the final by Foremarke A team. Denstone Tournament

We had a combination of abilities and Drawn 1 experience in the Under 11s, but all Lost 4 worked tirelessly throughout the season and with each match progress was clear. By the end, we were starting to move the ball around well and playing some attractive looking hockey. Special mention to Isabel Posnett, who grew in confidence as keeper and kept many goals out. Our best moments came during the Bromsgrove tournament where everything seemed to click; we did not quite get the results but we played as a team and even the driving rain did not dampen the spirits. Some of these players will step up to play at first team level next season. Others will slot into the seconds or thirds. Keep putting in the work, but most importantly of all, enjoy the game!

This year we played a coaching season, giving the girls the chance to compete against other schools in a less intense environment where coaches could give advice whilst umpiring. It was the first year they had played with a goalkeeper, a role masterfully taken on by Holly Harney, whose impressive penalty shuffles secured the team’s third place in our home tournament. Most matches were against teams that were one or two years older. However, they remained determined throughout and their hard work, grit and Packwood spirit shone through, as reflected in the end of season scores.

the learning curve and are soon able to be involved in matches. It is our third winter sport and so squads vary as footballers and/or rugby players are employed elsewhere. However, this allows more boys to be involved and we rarely ever field the same team twice. Fixtures tend to be treated as coaching games, dividing the match into quarters and trying to involve as many boys as possible. Results, therefore, become almost secondary – our main aim is to whet the appetites of those involved so that they will continue to play at their senior schools and hopefully beyond. It seems to be working! MAF

If you have not experienced it since your schooldays then, if you get a chance, watch the fast, modern version – you would be surprised! The first XIII displayed tremendous grit throughout the season and, for me, their most memorable game was against S. Anselm's. It epitomised the boys' attitude of refusing to give up, regardless of the match situation. Our opponents were much larger in stature and they proved to be very athletic players; their team had had an excellent season. During the first half, after some determined defence, we were down by four tries to zero. The boys had given maximum effort but had not quite managed to play to their strengths. In the second half, their determination was tremendous, and they began to move the ball through their hands beautifully creating fantastic continuity whilst running onto the ball at real pace. Thanks to their phenomenal attitude and skill, they concluded the match by winning by six tries to four. RUGBY
The season began with a visit to Denstone who dealt us a right royal spanking; it is testament to the calibre of this team that they never gave up and crucially, they learned quickly. We found some team spirit, deployed our players in the right positions and started playing some very good rugby. In fact, we only came unstuck one more time and that to Wrekin’s first choice Under 12 team. Well done chaps. In some games, the Lost 2 thirds looked very small compared to their opponents, but they were a hardworking side, physical, positive and determined. There were numerous tries from our speedy front men and the backs tackled well providing solid defence. Throughout the season, the boys developed and improved their skills. More often than not, passing was accurate and catches confidently taken, they ran well with ball in hand and always played with pace and grit setting the standard in their very
first game, a narrow loss to Denstone, where they blitzed the opposition from the start. The joy of Drawn 0 working with this Lost 1 age group is the development you witness. Typically, at the beginning of the season, the ball gets tucked under one arm and everyone runs off until they are tackled. This group was no different; however, they listened and worked hard on their decision-making and awareness. Soon, the ball began to move through lots of pairs of hands and the tries started to come. The Abberley fixture was a tough but effective lesson in how defence is just as important as attack. The boys started working as hard without the ball as they did with it and after that, the team went on a winning streak all the way through the season. Highlights included the fluidity of play against Prestfelde, the determined defence against an aggressive Terra Nova side and the heart and physicality they showed against Old Hall. Each member of the team added
something special but particular praise is due for Tom Thurstan’s creativity and link play; the jackals, turnovers and tackle count of Freddie Timmis; metres made by Charlie Rutherford and the consistency of captain, Rufus Farmer, who led from the front and dragged the team forward on many occasions. The team made excellent progress over a very Lost 1 constructive season. Keith proved to be the most effective player in all aspects of the game, scoring most of our tries with Centre, Joseph. Both are strong runners with the ball and passed effectively to create many of our best attacking opportunities. All improved significantly on tackling skills and in the final match against a powerful Old Hall team they defended heroically, just as they had in our game against the very strong Prestfelde outfit. Credit to all the forwards for winning the ball well at rucks and mauls, giving our quick backs like David and Arthur plenty of opportunity to attack the opposition.

What an amazing season: some epic victories, some heroic narrow losses and two new-style ‘Festivals of Rugby’ at Shrewsbury and Moulsford.
The new RFU rules prevent the Under 10s playing alongside the Under 11s so whereas, in the past players have, by osmosis, learned maturity, technique and skills of the game, this year they’ve had to pick it up all by themselves. They have lost that learning from peers, but perhaps have gained from coaching tweaked more to their needs and stage of development. Their core skills of passing, catching and running are very good. Their tackling, defensive awareness and fitness grew match by match. Mr Mullock is already excited about what these boys can achieve as Under 11s. The Under 9As had a great Won 8 Won 0 season, and won Drawn 1 Drawn 0 the cup for the Lost 1 Lost 2 best school team. and then there was no stopping him. He powered over the line, scattering our opponents in his wake. The joy at drawing such a hard fought match was terrific, and really summed up the team spirit of the boys. Even though the U9B team lost both their matches (one against an U9A team), the boys all worked hard in games lessons, and made progress this season. Henry Mee played well in both matches, but it was Alex Glausiusz and Isaac who stood out. Both had great games against Prestfelde, running strongly with the ball and scoring tries. Hopefully this will encourage them and all the others to continue working hard next season. Well done. Rosslyn Park is the largest schoolboy rugby tournament in the world and this Lost 1 year the boys played superbly well, suffering just one defeat to an excellent Cumnor House team. Their journey into the second round saw them win two and draw one. Against Harris Hill, Louis played fantastically well and ran in an excellent try showing his pace by beating their fast winger on the outside. Johnny, Freddie, Seb, Orlando and Jack also scored in that match. Against Dragon, Jack scored twice and Seb once, securing a 15-5 win. The Lambrook game was a thrilling 15-15 draw with William, Henry and Jack scoring our three tries. All the boys defended valiantly throughout the day but special credit to James whose strength and tenacity led to many turnovers and consistently superb tackling led to opposition teams knocking on numerous times. Seb also deserves credit, his energy and determination led to him being involved in almost every break down throughout the tournament and he created numerous scoring opportunities for the team. Under 11 VII Packwood Tournament / Caldicott Tournament Under 11 tournaments are now festivals where there is no overall winner, often scores are not kept and there are no knockout stages. The events are about enjoyment and team spirit. This year’s team, after a strong 9-a-side season, continued to develop as players. They had continually tried to play with ball in hand and to keep continuity, so the Sevens style of play was not a hard concept to understand. The highlight of the festivals was a valiant performance against a strong Abberley side. Sadly, Charlie was taken off to hospital just before the game and the boys grouped together and charged onto the pitch with cries of, “This one’s for Charlie!”; they went on to play like warriors and win the game. The Caldicott Sevens proved a tough challenge against some strong rugby schools on other circuits. The boys did not quite get going until the last matches, but the experience will equip them with confidence for the years ahead. Squad: Rufus Farmer (Capt), Freddie Timmis, Tom Thurstan, Charlie Rutherford, Wilf Peers, Felix Barlow, Archie Tulloch, Tom Williams, Carlos de Toro, Hal Cowan. JM

The challenges of the game become greater each season. This year was no exception. First, we had to learn and understand our individual roles and become reliable. The next stage, however, was far more important – the teamwork! We learned strategies to knit us together and develop strength as a unit. Our season began with a good series of wins. However, on our tour to London things did not go quite according to plan. We beat Haberdashers’ Aske’s, but lost narrowly to St.George’s and to St. Paul’s, who we later learned had been two of the strongest teams at the National Schools’ tournament, making the losses easier to take! We picked ourselves up, and individual performances and confidence began to strengthen. Soon superb moments of flourishing togetherness were beginning to appear, and were thrilling to see. Occasionally we had to be reminded that mental preparation was sometimes lacking, and that not sticking to our strategies weakened our play. Remember: “Never take anything for granted and never give them an inch!” Congratulations to eleven girls on their Shropshire County A or B selections. In March, the B squad become Champions of the North, with Genevieve Bright named as the Most Valuable Player. The A squad were narrow runners-up, and Isabel Morris was named as their MVP. Congratulations also to Amelia Farmer on her brilliant play and goal scoring. Our finale was at the Northern Schools’ tournament. We played very strong lacrosse, scoring 32 goals, and only conceding 12. We were runners-up, behind Queen’s,
Chester, who we had beaten in a storming game a week earlier. Perhaps this was their incentive to settle the score! We used our knowledge and whole season’s experience to play our very best. It was a wonderful way to finish, and close the book on my lacrosse days at Packwood. Very well done girls and thank you for your huge efforts – we had so many teamwork triumphs! Won 11 A determined little Drawn 1 bunch of Under 11 Lost 4 girls played alongside Under 12s in this team. They were full of courage and keen to learn, but… they were small! This restricted their strength and was most obvious when we played some very much bigger schools. Amazingly though, despite these variations in size and age, we only lost four games – and indeed, this was often due to crucial older girls not being available. As the season unfolded, all worked hard with their stick work. Consequently, they played more successfully together as a team, and began to understand the strategies, which will be so important for next year. Well done, girls and I wish you lots of good luck.

Not an easy season, but if we had not had tough challenges to work towards we would never have achieved so much! And this small group of Lost 7 girls certainly did try hard. Their passing, catching and cradling steadily improved. We worked on increasing confidence, on speed, on close marking, and on making good decisions of whether to pass, run with the ball or shoot. However, it was always going to be tough playing our neighbours from Moreton and Prestfelde, who had a bumper crop of strong athletes! Wins against Malvern St. James, Haberdashers’ Monmouth and Lucton School were very much to our credit; and with the score 4-6 against Moreton at theend of the season, we were getting closer! The seconds had a very successful netball season under the able captaincy of Ellie Letts. There were good wins against Adcote, Moreton Hall and Terra Nova and a tightly contested 8-7 victory over Abberley. Unfortunately, Moor Park denied us an unbeaten season. Another excellent year of Colts A cricket. All the boys really came on with consistently strong performances as the season progressed, a terrific effort that meant they were unbeaten in regular fixtures. The team had strength in depth with key players always able to make telling contributions. Freddie led the way with terrific allround performances with bat and ball, but everyone in the squad contributed. We regularly used eight or nine bowlers and four of them claimed more than eight wickets during the season – taking wickets is the most important element in setting up victories. Excellent swing bowling from Tom Kenyon and impressive off spin from Elliot produced 22 wickets. Many batsmen scored well with 50s from Freddie (four!), Wilf (batting average 54.25) and Oliver. All this, along with Tom Thurstan’s excellent glove work and our solid fielding made us a very tough side to beat. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this enthusiastic group and my highlight was the tremendous run chase to beat a very strong Prestfelde team – a fabulous effort to reach 193 with four overs to spare. Well done boys!

The Under 11 C/D players have done Won 3 really well this Drawn 0 term. All five Lost 2 games were pairs matches, meaning that everyone bats and everyone bowls. At this level, it is not all about winning, but about everyone taking part and having a chance to put into practice what they have learned in games sessions. Some players stood out: Tom for wicket keeping and batting, Taizo for bowling, Robert and William for bowling and batting and Carlos for superb fielding. I am sure I could mention others that have made great progress, or have shone at some point this season, however, let us just say that I am very pleased with all of them!
You can tell a prep school Won 2 boy in summer Drawn 0 because he is Lost 3 the one always practising his bowling action. This is certainly true of the Packwood Under 9s who are working to master this important skill. It is a tricky technique to learn and we spend a lot of time honing it. The boys made huge progress over the season in every aspect of the game – they learned to back up a throw, to make measured decisions on a run out, and to relay a throw. Like sponges, they soaked up fielding positions, umpires’ signals and the etiquette of the sport. Their cricket may still be a little raw, but the enthusiasm is there and most have been well and truly bitten by the bug!

Transferable skills from cricket have Lost 1 established some very sound fielding techniques. Amelia Farmer managed to execute an increasingly accurate pitch to first post and Eliza Blackham was quick to stump out running opponents. Isabel Morris worked hard to change her bowling style and keep the batter guessing. Her fast ball challenged many an opponent. With the bat Zennor, our Year 7 lefthander, could launch the ball and scored crucial rounders. Mathilde, new to this ‘silly’ English sport, soon picked up the rules and was very efficient with the bat. Our best all-round display came against Terra Nova, where a full team effort secured a very sound victory. Team: Eliza Blackham (Capt)*, Isabel Morris*, Amelia Farmer*, Heath Rosselli*, Zennor Harvey, Memie Sripen, Mathilde Siraudin, Isabelle Shannon, Genevieve Bright, Mary Brown. The second team had a very Lost 1 impressive rounders season, losing only one match. Led by an exceptional triangle of Liberty Clarke, Lucy Clarke and captain, Mair Griffith, the team fielded with great skill, using relays and second phase fielding with composure and proficiency. Their batting improved throughout the season and the team took their batting average into double figures per innings. Drawn

Runners-up
Once they had settled into their game at the start of term, the Under 11s developed into a formidable squad with every member playing an important role in the dynamics of the team. They quickly applied their skills into second nature reactions on the pitch with reminders from me becoming less and less frequent as the weeks went by! They took responsibility for their positions on the field and developed into a fluid team when fielding. The final victory of the season secured them a spectacular second place at the Foremarke Tournament where they scored a phenomenal number of rounders and showed that hard work and perseverance really does pay off. Team: Francia Besterman, Claudia Tate (Capts), Catherine Morton-Willetts, Lucy Mielczarek, Lulu Bright, Isabel Posnett, Florence Acton, Imogen Macey, Sienna Matson, Millie JonesPerrott. SL

What a successful season for the Under 10 girls! Rounders is enjoyed by all and was the sport where this group of girls really matured as a team. Not only did they improve their batting and throwing abilities, but they also refined their strategy and decision-making – skills that will prove useful as they go up the school, both on and off the sports fields. A special mention to Ella Cecil who really came out of her shell this season, mastering her batting and asserting herself as a ‘big hitter’. Team: Millie Jones-Perrott, Claudia Barnfield, Lexi Kawczynski, Meghan Sheppard, Bella Timmis, Poppy Besterman, Ella Cecil, Megan Greenwell, Holly Harney, Chloe Pencavel, Millie Parry. HJ/NK

Horsing around Last ye y year ar ended with our first qualifications for or the NSEA Championships so in the autumn utumn term we headed off to South View looking ooking for more! As usual, our riders produced some competitive v rounds. ve Packwood’s team of Archie Tulloch, Archie Barlow, Felix Barlow and Heath Rosselli won the 70cm Jumping with Style (JwS) meaning they had qualified for this class for a second time within one year! As well as their well-deserved team place, there were individual qualifications for Archie Barlow in the 70cm JwS, Felix Barlow in the 80cm JwS and Archie Tulloch in the 70cm Show Jumping.
At the Championships, the team was just kept out of the top placings by a few too many fences down, but Archie Tulloch produced a lovely clear in the individual 70cm Show Jumping competition and, overall, it was a great weekend. Our riders were busy with their horses over the winter when the focus was the Princethorpe Two Day Event. We entered two teams in the 80cm class and one (Heath Rosselli, Fred Greenwell, Archie Tulloch and Felix Barlow) took second place. There were individual honours too for Felix who won his section with Angus Hill-Trevor coming eighth, and for Heath who was second in her section with Archie Tulloch sixth. Archie Barlow joined some friends to make a team in the 90cm class and they won! The year ended on a real high at Beaver Hall. Bella Timmis and her new pony took second place in the 70cm JwS and the 80cm team (Felix, Archie, Fred and Archie) won their class. Archie Barlow also gained individual second place in the 90cm class, all of which means we will be off to the Championships again next year! JB

strong field to win the 100m and Edward Forde-Johnston took victory in the 200m. In the girls’ track events, Amelia Farmer overcame Eliza Blackham in a superb 100m final and Liberty Clarke produced a terrific finish to win the 800m. Overall, Mannings/Sodens won convincingly and were duly awarded the Miriam Heard Cup. PJP
William Kimberley and James Pickering showed promise in the Boys’ Shot; William threw an excellent 10.05m to win in style. In the Long Jump, Amelia Farmer (3.96m) and Henry Barlow (4.06m) produced the winning jumps of the day. On the track, all events were highly competitive with excellent winning times. Orlando Bayliss won the 800m in just under three minutes ahead of Freddie Cox. Wilbur Blackham impressed in a very
At the almighty Malvern National Prep Schools’ Championships our top runners were Will Tate (96th) and Ed Forde-Johnston (100th), closely followed by William Waterhouse (109th). The highlight of the year was the English Schools XC Cup. The Under 13s were determined to do well and managed to win the event at Adams’ Grammar, qualifying for the regional round in Warrington. The course was horribly muddy and slippery after heavy rain that week but, as usual, the boys ran their hearts out. Sadly, it was not enough to win through to the national round. They finished sixth with a top performance from Freddie Cox who was eighth overall.
100% effort This is not a sport for the fainthearted and this year, as ever, I was delighted by how all the runners gave their best in every race – including new team member, Finnley Parr, who has been terrific and very dedicated.
The end of year celebrations took place as usual at the Shrewsbury Park Run, a challenging 5km course. Some brave parents even came to run too – well done Mrs Bayliss, Mr Hughes and Mr Tate. Lots of PBs were achieved that day – Orlando Bayliss beat his previous time by 2min 32s, what a feat! Our top runner was George Hughes (who barely broke a sweat) in a cracking 20min 54s, closely followed by Will Tate in 21min 03s.
There were many competitions: The Shropshire Young Athletes XC League in which Packwood finished fourth; The Shrewsbury High Prep XC where we were third; The Abberley relays; and The Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt Prep Schools’ XC Championships where the Under 13 boys finished third. Top performers were Tom Thurstan (2nd U11 boys’), Claudia Tate (8th U11 girls’) and Edward FordeJohnston (5th U13 boys’).
It has been an absolute pleasure to look after this great team. Some have been members for more than four years and their progress has been astonishing. I wish them well and I hope that they will continue to run competitively in their next schools and remember fondly their Packwood XC years. JN

My thanks to everyone – children, coaches and parents – for another amazing year. The girls made it six years in a row on the podium at the nationals and the boys inspired us with a GB Teams’ quarter final ‘thriller’ against old rivals, Sussex House. Amelia and Seb won Sports Scholarships and there was a Michael Palin All-Rounder Scholarship for Captain Louis (Packwood fencers’ fourth in four years). The juniors launched into the sport with gusto scooping all of the gold and silver medals in the West Midlands’ Under 10s and Millie Parry collected a medal in every competition she entered, including the Under 10 Nationals! All this and oh yes, ‘Pro-Coach’ David had a baby too! NW

Making a splash The children were as enthusiastic as ever in the swimming pool and worked hard in lessons to improve stroke technique and stamina. They also enjoyed fun activities and games including cat and mouse, water polo and flipper work, all of which help to increase water confidence and encourage teamwork. In addition, many of our keenest swimmers continued to attend training sessions at Shrewsbury School on Thursday evenings. This year nearly 60 pupils took part in the increasingly popular Sixes Aquathlon. They started with a swim; then quickly changed into their running gear and sped to the other side of the school for laps of the 200m track. Congratulations to all for taking part in what were quite chilly
conditions, and especially well done to Will Tate for claiming the hat-trick by winning the Year 6-8 section again. Second was Freddie Timmis (Year 6) and Isabelle Shannon and Archie McParland finished third, just a few seconds ahead of Morgan Matthews, George Hughes and Claudia Tate. Competition will be fierce next year! The swimming year rounded off with the exciting Sixes relays, which were as closely contested as ever. Mannings/Sodens clinched a narrow victory and won the Prosser Cup. SH/JN
Gripping stuff A busy summer term of tennis in which our players learned much from some tough opponents, many of whom (unlike us) had played competitively throughout the year. Three friendly practice games at Prestfelde made us focus on being consistent and not too flashy. Against some good Birchfield pairs, we had many tight deuce games and in the Shrewsbury School matches there were some sensational rallies, all of which set us up for the fantastic Repton tournament in which 17 prep schools took part. All our children did themselves justice. Our Under 13 boys (Jago and Louis), Under 12 boys (Tom Bright and Pierre) and Under 12 girls (Lucy and Violette) were all third in their sections. Tom Kenyon and Felix were second, just missing out on the semi-finals. Congratulations to mary and Isabel, who were winners of their section, and went on to be tournament runners-up. we rounded off the term with several matches against the academy players at Ellesmere College, honing our technique and competitive play. In the parent/pupil competition, Robin morris and Isabel narrowly beat matron Sue and Pierre in the final – congratulations to them!

Moving on The end of the school year also marked the end of their time at Packwood for some members of staff. We say goodbye and good luck for the future to our graduate assistants, Nathalie Kelk and Matt Stone, and gap students, Harry Spain and Milla Harvey-Scholes. They contributed hugely, in so many ways, to school life for pupils and staff alike and our gratitude for all their help in the classroom, on the games field, in the music room and in dorms is unbounded. Stalwart of the English Department, Ken webster, retired at the end of the summer term after 11 years at Packwood. During that time, he guided successive classes of pupils through the challenges of Common Entrance English with great patience, wise professionalism and good humour. He was an enormously popular form

tutor of 8W who never failed to develop a warm rapport with the children in his class. He made a huge and positive impact on the lives of so many – as first team rugby coach and as a landing tutor in the boys’ boarding house for many years – but also in smaller, subtler ways: all will miss his kindly manner and gentle wit and, for those privileged to witness it, his prowess on the acoustic guitar! Also retiring this year is head gardener, Geoff Morris. The spectacular gardens and grounds are one of Packwood’s greatest assets and they are largely testament to Geoff’s creativity and hard work. Planning, planting, hoeing, deadheading, watering – always working calmly, steadily and with a smile. In recent years, he was also an invaluable assistant to Martin Ford on the girls’ leavers’ trip where his unflappable nature and sense of humour endeared him greatly to the children. We wish both Ken and Geoff a long, happy and healthy retirement. Finally, we say farewell again to Sue Draper who so kindly stepped back into the breach to resume coaching lacrosse and tennis despite officially retiring three years ago. Thank you Sue for everything you have done to inspire enjoyment, nurture talent and develop skills and self-confidence in the children you have worked with over the years.

Old PackwOOdians
Old Packwoodians OPs reunite We were delighted to welcome back more than 30 Old Packwoodians who left school in 2011 for a reunion get-together on the first Sunday of the autumn term. For many members of staff, and for some of the OPs, this was the first time they had seen each other since the day they left Packwood so there was plenty of news to catch up on and changes in appearance at which to marvel! Our visitors took themselves off for tours of their old stamping ground, nearly all commenting on how small

deaths sir John Bather (1942) dr Richard ward (1951) went on to Shrewsbury after leaving Packwood and then St John’s College, Cambridge. He later did his medical training at Bart’s Hospital in London. He became a consultant in Gynaecology and Obstetrics at University College Hospital London. He was Captain of Boats at Shrewsbury and rowed for LMBC and Bart’s. He died at the beginning of 2016. Francesca Humphreys (1963 - 2016) “Francesca was a true friend of Packwood. Her contribution as a governor and, in particular, as the governor responsible for boarding, was invaluable. She took on this role with enthusiasm and energy and was a great support to the staff and frequent visitor to Packwood, despite living in the Isle of Man.
everything now seemed and impressed by the many changes and innovations since their time here. Matron Caron’s extensive archive had been plundered for a slideshow of photos of our visitors during their Packwood school days, causing great amusement and many howls of embarrassment. A delicious dinner followed, over which the reminiscing continued. It was a very happy occasion and it was lovely to see so many (semi) familiar faces and to hearabout plans for university, apprenticeships, travelling and work.
“Francesca was born and brought up in Shropshire and read medicine at Cambridge University. She qualified as a doctor in London and practised as a GP. After her marriage, she returned to Shropshire when her husband Martin was appointed history master at Shrewsbury School and subsequently, housemaster of Ridgemount. Francesca was a much-loved chatelaine of Ridgemount and the mainstay for Martin and generations of boys in the house. “Always determined to make a difference, she was also a GP in Shrewsbury and brought up their three children, Imogen, Saskia and Jack. Both Saskia and Jack attended Packwood until Martin became Principal of King William’s College on the Isle of Man. Francesca embraced her new life on the island but, sadly was then faced with a long struggle with cancer. She was not deterred, enduring months of treatment with fortitude, still fulfilling her King William and Packwood roles and taking on a new challenge of advising on palliative care in Shropshire. “Francesca lived life to the full, even in the last weeks of her illness and her loss is felt by so many. The governors, together with all at Packwood, miss her wise counsel, sharp intellect, friendship and her generosity of spirit.” Liz Lewis, Chair of Governors

Three-generation lunch The year 2017-18 marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of Packwood and we have planned a varied programme of events running throughout the year to celebrate this milestone. Over the course of those 125 years, many families have had multiple generations of pupils at the school and in May we took the opportunity to mark their long association with Packwood at a special Three-generation Lunch – indeed, for one of the families attending, four generations have passed through the school. A handful of current pupils joined their parents, grandparents and some of Packwood’s longest-serving members of staff for a delicious lunch and a chance to compare their Packwood experiences with the reminiscences of their relatives about what school life was like in the old days. There was general agreement that everything from food, to dorms and bathrooms, to lessons and extra-curricular pastimes had all improved immeasurably. The youngest members of the party certainly did not feel they had missed out by not being at Packwood when pupils were tasked with helping to dig the hole for the swimming pool… It was a very convivial occasion and a fitting way to set our celebratory year in motion.
Keep in touch! We are always delighted to receive news and photos from Old Packwoodians. Please email us (opnews@packwood-haugh.co.uk) with any news and do visit the Old Packwoodian Facebook page. As ever, we would be very pleased to hear any suggestions for inclusion on our list of notable Alumni that can be found through the Old Packwoodians page of the school website (www.packwood-haugh.co.uk). We hope to see many of you during the course of our forthcoming special anniversary year as we celebrate Packwood’s 125th birthday. Please visit the school website for full details of the extensive programme of events.
