The Headmaster 2017/18 has been an incredible year for the whole school community as we celebrated 125 years for Packwood. A few years back when the 125 committee was formed, there was a great sense of excitement about the ‘feel‐good year’ this would be, one in which everyone would be involved and that has certainly been the case. Events for the children included a Victorian Day, a 12.5 km walk and a fete. Parents enjoyed a golf day, wine evening, auction of promises and comedy evening and events for the whole community included the special church service with the Bishop of Shrewsbury that began the year, a celebration concert, plant sale, cricket day and Grand Ball.

My thanks to everyone who contributed to these events and towards our fundraising effort for the redevelopment of the science facilities. A special thank you to the committee who masterminded the programme and in particular to the chairman, Howard Bourne, who worked tirelessly to make the year such a success. Once again, our leavers all go on to their first choice 13+ senior schools with some of the best results on record. Those who took Common Entrance achieved 95% A-C grades and the Year 8s, as a whole, amassed a remarkable 30 scholarships: 10 academic, seven sport, five all-rounder, three art, three drama and two music. These results reflect the fantastic ‘cubed’ education at Packwood, an education that offers height, breadth and depth – as can be seen in the pages of this magazine. I hope you enjoy browsing through and finding out more about the children’s learning, and the great fun they have. The children’s happiness remains very important to me. I would like to thank the magazine’s editor, Cath Hammond, for the huge amount of work she has put into this year’s edition of the Packwoodian. Packwood has stood the test of time and as we move forward, we continue to make sure that the school is fit for purpose in a modern and dynamic world. I would like to thank you for your support for the school and hope to see you at one of our school events from September 2018.

Acorns–Review of the Year As ever, Acorns’ life was action-packed and there were many highlights – astronauts and aliens, an African adventure and our first-ever Sixes’cricket competition are just a few. Underpinning all that we do are our core literacy and numeracy lessons that take place each morning. Of course, the curriculum encompasses so much more besides, including enjoying the benefits of the main school’s facilities. The Acorns have computer lessons in the IT suite overseen by Mr Rigby (Head of IT), Music lessons with Mrs Boutwood (Head of Music) in the Music Department, PE lessons in the sports hall, or on the AWS and the school fields with Mrs Parry (Head of PE), and Italian, Spanish and French lessons from Mrs Lambkin. And, lunch in the main school dining room is one of the best parts of the day! Back in September, the Acorns year began with a Forest School Open Morning. Parents and children joined us one Saturday morning to take part in activities in Acorns’ Wood and to toast marshmallows over the fire. In the coming academic year, we will have a new

Acorns’ Wood just across from Park House so there will be no more long walks up the steep hill back to class! The Acorns took full part in the Packwood 125 celebrations. In the summer term, they completed a 1.25 km sponsored walk around the fields and on Victorian Day, they looked back at the time when Packwood began. This was just one of a variety of special theme days this year – Maths Day, Science Day, an African Art and Craft Day and World Cup Day all saw the children enjoying working together in mixed age groups on a variety of activities. Our first trip of the year was to Shrewsbury Museum for a storytelling experience, very much a hands-on visit during which the children told stories using Lego models. In the summer, we learned about the homes and habitats of bugs at the Groundwork Education Centre just outside Wrexham. There was an exciting event in the spring term, when our trip came to us in the form of an inflatable planetarium. The children were thrilled to be able to experience the solar system, to see the constellations and the night sky. Many thanks to the parents who visited this year. Mrs Kwong, Mrs Garrett and Mrs Hilton helped us decorate for our Chinese New Year

ACORNS celebrations. They talked to the children about the traditions of the festival and taught them a little Mandarin. Mr Steinberg also came in and entertained the children with tales of growing up in South Africa. Our Year 2 children all performed with great success in the English Speaking Board exams in the spring term. Open Assemblies were a triumph â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I am always amazed at what the children can do at such a young age. Unfortunately, due to the snow, the Nativity Play was cancelled but the children performed

in the play An Animal Rumble Grumble in the end of year assembly. Sports Day was also affected by the weather and took place indoors, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm and effort of the children. All of these activities, events and achievements would not take place without the dedication and hard work of all those involved in Packwood Acorns; so well done and thank you! SJR

Nursery news We welcomed some new faces at the start of the year and spent a busy first term celebrating many different festivals – Hallowe’en, Diwali and Bonfire Night all offered numerous opportunities for art, craft and musical activities, much enjoyed by the children! Term ended with a wonderful performance of Whoops-a-Daisy Angel in the school theatre. As ever, the children relished their chance to appear on the big stage and played their parts with confidence. Nursery life was as busy as always throughout the rest of the year. The babies enjoyed lots of messy play (involving rice, pasta, paper and slime) and learning through noisy toys and sensory baskets, which were a great hit judging by the volume of laughter from children and staff. The toddlers became archaeologists specializing in dinosaurs and found bones in the sand as well as chiselling dinosaurs from ice. Matching games and number games were also high on their agenda as they

prepared for the transition to preschool. This year’s pre-school looked at ‘Our British Values’ along with numbers and letters. The children enjoyed story bags and nursery rhyme bags and learned to write their names by signing in each morning. In the summer, they took part in extra-curricular activities including swimming and dance. Other highlights were joining Acorns for the 1.25 km sponsored walk through the school grounds; treasure hunts and water play; PE with Mrs Parry from the main school; story time with Reception teacher, Miss Wall and with the Headmaster; growing butterflies from caterpillars and releasing them into the wild; visits to Forest School; and our annual Sports Day which rounded off the year in style. Maintenance and more Behind the scenes at Packwood is a vast team of people that help in the day-to-day running of the school – catering staff, cleaners, groundsmen – but one of the most important of all is our long-serving maintenance man, John Ethelston, who has been a vital cog in the Packwood machine since 2005. It is impossible to describe a typical day for John, as no two are the same. As he says, “My job is never boring. There is always something that needs doing and I never know what might come up in the course of a day.” Never without his toolbox or far from the electric buggy he uses to get around the school, John could be called upon to attend to the school boiler, replace broken windows, repair jammed lockers or assemble and mount rows of coat hooks. Daily tasks include checking the pH levels of the swimming pool, transferring clean washing from the

This on-going task (not unlike the Forth Bridge) falls to Mike O’Hara whose permanent tan is testament to the long hours he spends outdoors keeping Packwood looking smart. The smell of fresh paint is on the air throughout term time and the school holidays as Mike continues his work. Above and beyond everything John and Mike do around the school site, they are also responsible for getting some of the pupils to school and home again every day in their role as minibus drivers on the Packwood bus routes. They truly are an invaluable team!

Park House: Home from home The junior landing was awash with life and colour this year. Our ever-growing number of junior boarders, mixed in with the day girls boarding on occasional nights meant plenty of fun for all. Regular dressing up, the performance of imaginary plays and strutting their stuff to the Wii ‘Just Dance’ game kept the girls very busy. Miss Jones also held a termly spa night in the junior common room. All of the creams and masks came out and the girls enjoyed an evening of relaxation and therapeutic indulgence. Hallowe’en evening saw all the ghosts and ghouls emerge in Park House as the girls put much time and effort into their fantastic fancy dress outfits. The Year 8 common room was certainly not a place for the fainthearted and everyone had a lot of fun, especially apple bobbing and playing the Oreo game. There was more dressing up on ‘Bin bag night’ when the girls went to town on transforming humble black bin bags into astonishing outfits that would not have been out of place on the world’s prestigious fashion catwalks. Sloppy Sundays gave the girls a chance for a slower-paced start to the day. Our last one of the year was held in the garden in the glorious morning sunshine. All the girls sat outside in their pyjamas and slippers enjoying a breakfast spread together.

‘Parkie’s Got Talent’ (PGT) created the usual buzz of excitement at the end of the summer term. Mr Webster returned from retirement to take his seat on the judging panel with current housekeeper, Gwenn and recently retired housekeeper, Sue. They were not disappointed as the girls put on a great show with magic, dance routines, musical performances, catwalks and comedy sketches. The standout act came all the way from France with Daphne performing a memorable piece on the keyboard to take first prize. A big thank you to Miss Leslie who joined us this year as a graduate assistant and boarding tutor. She added a great deal to the house and enhanced the girls’ boarding lives. Luckily, both she and Miss Jones will still be with us next year as we look forward to many more fun times together in Park House. JM/BM

Boarding Brotherhood

Two new members of staff joined the team this year, Emily Cooper and Jonty Hall, and they helped contribute towards the lovely atmosphere in the boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; boarding house. The boarders had another busy year. As well as the daily routine of lessons, games, prep and clubs and activities there was lots going on in the evenings and at weekends. Off-site visits to the Blue Planet Aquarium, the Midland Game Fair, The Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford, and Telford Steam Railway and more have been interspersed with a camping night in the Spinney, fishing trips, shooting activities, pottery making, and a perennial favourite, cookery.

At the end of term, the boys put on a very entertaining â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Boarders Got Talentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; evening. Many boys took part and there was a dazzling variety of acts. In second place was Henry Cunningham who captivated the audience with his spinning tops. The winners were Taizo Okazaki, Keith Au Yeung, David Shannon and Tom Thurstan with a unique performance of How to be a Ninja. Another end of term tradition is the Year 8 leavers' dinner. It was a lovely occasion enjoyed by all and at the end, many tears were shed; this was a particularly close-knit year group and they will be greatly missed. CL

Academic report Packwood continues to win scholarship awards to a range of top schools. This year the honours have included four academic awards to Shrewsbury, and one each to Rugby, Malvern, St Edward’s and Moreton. The pupils have also won coveted all-round awards to a number of schools, including our first in Year 7 to Repton (the CB Fry Award). There has also been a healthy number of Art, Music and Drama awards gained by our leavers. Lower down the school, several children have secured places at Eton, Harrow and Winchester.

2018 Scholars

The whole main school enjoyed Sixes’ off-curriculum day in the summer term, when Mr Nogues organised a terrific Languages Day. Year groups and teachers were jumbled up for twelve different language workshops, including Japanese, Dutch, Maori and Swahili. Last year’s popular Year 8 activity week also returned to enrich the top year’s curriculum further.

Beginning with a day’s outdoor training in ‘Grit and Resilience’, the week also included talent show auditions, outdoor skills and a MasterChef competition. Other activities were more thought provoking, such as the visit to the Beatles and Slavery museums in Liverpool. Thanks are also due to Packwood parents past and present for fascinating talks through the year on the British Empire, beavers, and South Georgia. The Year 8 Common Entrance grades were higher than ever, with a remarkable 71% of papers marked

A or B and 95% A to C. Results in the humanities subjects stood out this year, with Religious Studies, History and Geography earning swathes of top grades. RS achieved the most As, with 14 top grades and Flora Raichura winning the prize to Moreton Hall. In History, Orlando Bayliss came top in the scholarship papers whilst Freddie Wells won the Townsend Warner prize for historical knowledge. The Year 8 humanities trip to Holland once again proved a highlight, and in Geography there were also some outstanding results, including an A+ for Wilbur Blackham (Sedbergh) and A* for Bobby Boyes (Malvern). The Classics department is thriving and looking forward to next term’s trip to Italy. There were some wonderfully creative offerings through the year,

including Tres Porci Parvi in Latin, a Greek reading competition and 8C’s memorable modern film of Homer’s Odyssey. Pupils in 7H also all sat a public exam, a WJEC Latin certificate, usually only attempted by pupils at senior school. In English, the Year 4s returned some outstanding ESB results (thanks to Miss Lowe) and 8C enjoyed their post-scholarship trip to watch King Lear at Stratford. There have been comings and goings as well: it has been great to welcome on board Mark Collins, our new Head of Maths, who has already proven a popular appointment. Farewell though to Richard Herzog, after 35 years of dedicated service running the Science department. We will all miss Richard’s high standards as well as his wry humour – I hope the new Head of Science can build exploding rockets just as well! RAC

This has truly been a good year for the Art Department at Packwood with achievements, exhibits and visits to other school departments ranging far and wide. With the emphasis on breadth, many children found ways to express themselves in a visual medium, whether it was in pottery, painting, printing, drawing or one of the many mixed media pieces including sculptures made out of recycled plastic. Children also contributed to the decorations for the 125 Grand Ball and to the scenery and props for the plays. At the Malvern College Music and Arts Day, Claudia Tate, Lulu Bright, Sienna Matson, Florence Acton and Imogen Macey made some superb sculpture fashion from plastic wire ties, and at Moreton Hall, Orlando Bayliss, Lulu Bright, Kate Kwong, Wilbur Blackham, David Shannon and Francia Besterman produced some excellent colourful mixed media pieces.

The Shrewsbury School Art and DT Competition was on the theme of Reflections. Three Packwood pupils won prizes (Mateo Gonzalez Redondo [2nd], Charlie Weston and Keith Au Yeung) and were invited to an art and design workshop day at the school. The next big competition was at Rydal Penrhos on the theme of Peace. Ella Cecil not only won in her age group, but was also best in school, Claudia Barnfield was highly commended and both Henry Longfellow and Barney Parry also won prizes, with Teddy Geary and Harry Woolfenden as runners-up. The IAPS art competition at Bromsgrove saw work on display by Sean Leung, Suzanna Pearce, Maddie Geary, Sienna Matson, Oliver Mee, Isabel Posnett and Cai Harrison, and there were similar Packwood exhibits at the SATIPS Art Show this year. Shrewsbury Bookfest in the spring term provided another opportunity for our artists to create some super work, all related to the featured books. Charlie Weston and Rory Hall won runnersup prizes and their work was displayed in a temporary exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum. Finally, the Millicent Kaye Art Competition was on the theme of The Great War. Ten

children had their work exhibited in the Qube Gallery in Oswestry and Claudia Barnfield, George Leese, Hugo Dollar and George Cambray were all highly commended. This year’s scholarship results were some of the best in recent years for the Art Department. Ed Scott and Genevieve Bright gained all-rounder scholarships to Shrewsbury School, which included art as part of the exam. Elsa Waterhouse’s outstanding artistic skills and hard work over the last two years earned her art scholarships to Malvern College and Shrewsbury School, and Orlando Bayliss’ superb artistic talent was rewarded with a scholarship to Shrewsbury School. We will miss them and their work, which has been a feature of the displays around school for many years. PRD

MUSIC

Fine-tuning Whilst the games staff are well used to having their plans affected by the weather on a regular basis, it is very rare that this happens to the Music Department. This was a year of extreme weather, in which both our carol services were cancelled – for the first time in living memory – due to snow and, at the other end of the scale, we were finally able to hold our Summer Concert not just outside but outside in the blazing sunshine! The musical school year began with a special church service to start the 125 celebrations: this was a real success with new senior choirs singing an anthem and lovely solos by Eve Leslie and Daniel Garrett. Many 125 events were held throughout this year but one that particularly stood out musically was the celebration concert in February, in which our senior choirs combined with Howard Bourne’s male voice choir (The Fron) and also included some terrific soloists drawn from Packwoodians past and present. A great deal of music takes place in school but many musicians also went out and about this year. Members of the COPS joined with other orchestral players of a similar age and standard at Malvern

College’s annual arts day. This is always an enjoyable event, in which children learn several pieces of music, helped by current Malvern musicians, and perform these in a concert at the end of the day. Shrewsbury School’s choral day ran along similar lines, and our senior Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs gained a lot from taking part in this in its second year. More recently, the senior choirs sang a beautiful and moving Evensong

at St Chad’s church in Shrewsbury, which the congregation very much enjoyed; this was followed by a trip to Waterworld and lunch at Frankie & Benny’s, which the choir very much enjoyed! As always, many children took music exams in a huge variety of instruments as well as percussion, music theory and Royal School of Church Music choir exams. Results were particularly encouraging, with many Merits and Distinctions. Exams are fabulous achievements for any child, but there were also some other outstanding musical successes this year: Eve Leslie gained music scholarships to both Shrewsbury School and Malvern College; Daniel Garrett hugely enjoyed his first year at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior Academy, which he attended every Saturday; Joseph Bowdler gained a place there (specialising in guitar and piano) and will be starting in September 2018; and during the holidays Keith Au Yeung attended his first summer school as a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.

MUSIC

There is much to look forward to next year. The senior choirs will be singing at the ‘Bookfest Remembers’ concert in Theatre Severn, a very prestigious event. There will be many musical performances in school from pupils of all ages, at assemblies, teatime concerts, ensemble performances and even in class Music lessons. Every pupil at Packwood is involved in music, and I am delighted every year by how many children choose to take their interest further through individual instrumental and singing lessons. Well done to all, and here’s to another successful year’s music which, like this year’s Summer Concert, will hopefully ‘end with a bang’! SB

DRAMA

Theatrical triumphs Two magical productions emerged from the cauldron of creativity that is the Packwood Drama Department this year The senior play, Cinderella – The Truth! was a re-working of the traditional fairy tale (interwoven with ABBA songs) that gave plenty of scope for song, dance and comic moments. Tom Bright as the narrator, Italics, moved the action along with his ironic commentary. His superb deadpan delivery and comic timing showed exactly why he went on to win a drama scholarship to Shrewsbury School. Our other drama scholars this year, Eve Leslie and Flora Raichura, also featured prominently. Eve was the first of the production’s two Cinderellas. She played the part with grace and poise and moved us all with her poignant and beautiful singing of I Have a Dream. Flora was one of the magnificently outrageous Ugly Sisters, alongside Lucy Clarke. As very chavvy ‘Essex’ girls, they played their parts with a wonderful humour. From the first scene at a party in the royal palace presided over by Kutenda Creusailor as the charmless

Prince Pompous and his fearsome and domineering mother, the Queen (brought to life very convincingly by Genevieve Bright!) to the closing notes of the show’s triumphant finale, Dancing Queen, the whole production soared. The energy and verve of the young cast was complemented by the wonderful choreography, the singing, the costumes, the scenery – everything that makes a play at Packwood such a special event. Arguably surpassing the seniors’ Cinderella, this year’s junior production was quite simply brilliant. Shot through with fantastically lame puns and silly jokes, Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies was the funniest ever Packwood junior play. Again based on a traditional tale, there were some unfamiliar twists to the old story centring on Maid Marion mistaking “…England’s finest troupe of travelling entertainers…” for genuine outlaws who might help the people in their fight against Evil King John’s tax collectors. There were superb performances across the board – Alexis Kawczynski as Marion, Charlie Weston as Robin, Finn Bowdler as peevish King John, Oscar Connor as the Sheriff, Meghan Sheppard as Will Scarlett, Freddie Barry

DRAMA as Dancing Dave in his gold sequinned knee breechesâ&#x20AC;Ś the list goes on and on. The terrible jokes ran through the play like a rich seam mined by all the main characters in turn. Their knowing delivery and obvious enjoyment was matched by some brilliant comic acting (Meghan again, but also Sam Lewis and Freddie Shute as hapless robbers, Grabbit and Bolt, among many, many others). It is almost impossible to convey in writing what a thoroughly entertaining show this was â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we laughed so much, we cried!

DRAMA

As well as our two major productions, there was much more that contributed to another very busy and fulfilling year. Year 7s enjoyed creating plays-in-a-day, and then performing their finished products to the rest of the school. Each class in Years 3, 4 and 5 practised their own mini-plays in drama lessons and performed them in assembly to their parents and the whole school. They were all very much a class effort, with everybody able to build their confidence, and every child having a speaking part. Our keenest actors enjoyed drama clubs and those wanting to develop their skills further, worked hard to learn and practise monologues for LAMDA exams. We wish our top year leavers well â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we will certainly miss their talent but I am sure they will continue to shine at their new schools. RHC

Packwood 125 The year 2017-18 marked Packwood’s 125th anniversary and we celebrated this landmark in the school’s illustrious history with a series of special events involving pupils, members of staﬀ, parents, Old Packwoodians and friends of the school. There was something for everyone and each event in turn was a great success, thanks in very large part to the indefatigable 125 Committee chairman, Howard Bourne.

Of course, the number of days in the week is the limiting factor and choosing whether to try something new or to develop an existing interest is often the hardest part. This year’s team comprised Lost 2 nearly all Year 8s, apart from two Spanish boys new to Packwood, who brought some European flair to the team. All worked tirelessly on the training field, approaching practice positively, and it was clear from the start that they possessed a good standard of ball control, agility and awareness.

Apart from one fixture, all matches were close affairs with the boys showing resilience, belief and great team spirit. They were also high scoring, which made the team very entertaining to watch. Special memories from the season include the comeback to beat a confident and determined Birchfield side with goals in the last few minutes, and the late winner from Mateo against Oswestry to clinch the game 4-3. Not forgetting, Will Goodall’s ‘worldy’ against Foremarke from outside the box with the outside of his foot, and the performance against Prestfelde that did not get the reward it deserved. Standout performances came from goal-machine Mateo taking after his dad with some great finishes, his partner up top, Archie Barlow, who tore defences apart with his pace and who really improved his finishing this year, and George S-D who became a rock at the back supported by a bit of class from

Tom Bright. Then there were the likes of George Hughes, Wilbur Blackham and Archie McParland who offered such quality on the flanks and opened up the space in the middle for Will Goodall and Henry Barlow. Special mention to our skipper Orlando in goal who led the boys brilliantly and kept the team in many games with his fantastic shot-stopping, and to George Hughes who played for Midlands IPS – a fantastic achievement. This was a memorable year for a group with real quality. Well done! 2nd XI

This was another enthusiastic and well-motivated second Lost 2 team who overall had an excellent season. The team was built around new addition to the school, Fernando who, when playing at his best, gave us the creative edge and driving force in midfield. He also contributed with some spectacular goals in a total of six scored for the season. The back four of Charlie, Theo, Edward and Freddie gave us a solid base providing width and excellent support for Luis who was our joint top scorer with six goals also. Add to this the quality of Tom’s play, the pace of Morgan and the shot-stopping skills of both Henry and Rufus in goal and the squad turned out to be a formidable unit, as Abberley found out to their cost in the final game of the season. The highlight though, was the performance and result against a hardworking S. Anselm’s team on a very damp pitch. Utility man Kutenda probably had his most influential game in midfield directing most of our successful attacking play. Well done! The third XI played a broad range of fixtures. The highlight was a 5-1 win Lost 2 against Foremarke fourths, whilst we also beat Terra Nova 2-0. We lost to Prestfelde on a penalty in the final minute and were well beaten by a strong Wrekin U13 side. The final 0-0 draw against Abberley seemed about right. This year’s star player was Christian Brookes, who scored a number of goals. Jack Gardiner also came good and Rufus Farmer proved one of the best keepers we have had at this level. There were some great wins and some tough losses this season. The Lost 3 boys developed their passing game and their understanding of positional play. They played in an unselfish way, looking for through balls and working very well together. One excellent element of their play has been their effort and work rate. Many of them have fantastic ‘engines’ for their age and their determination and commitment will stand them in good stead for their future sporting careers. The most memorable match was against Birchfield; the boys' passing game was excellent, hugely selfless and they kept their shape throughout. They achieved a convincing victory over a very good side – a superb effort and the best performance of any U11A team I have seen at Packwood. The Bs were a very happy bunch, delightful to coach. Of course, we Lost 4 tried to play the beautiful passing game in this great seven-a-side format, but as the skills were still developing, a hoof down the middle was still a useful option! The defence became an increasingly solid wall as the season progressed, with Ed and Charlie making a formidable partnership: the former having a huge kick, and Charlie the most improved player. In midfield, Freddie ‘The Tank’, George, with his silky left foot, and the dynamo Henry, combined well. Up front, Archie poached goals from all angles. We were delighted to have Teddy occasionally from the A team as his speed and skill gave us that extra edge, particularly against stronger teams. We had some fun, competitive games, played in an excellent spirit. It was a positive season for the Under 11C team. The boys Lost 4 worked hard in training sessions and improved with every match. They won some thrilling games; I specifically remember the game against Terra Nova, which was a nail biter that they ended up winning in the last few minutes by four goals to three. Drawn 0

All the boys made progress Drawn 1 in their overall fitness and Lost 4 their skill levels – especially tackling and passing. Getting the basics right was key to our training sessions. In matches, it was encouraging to see the boys’ tactical awareness improve with every game and they developed their ability to be proactive to events. This squad is still a work in progress but there is much to build on next year. According to Billy Ocean, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going" – a great Lost 4 motto for the Under 9s this season. A lot can be learned about the character of a team when facing adversity and there were times when we found ourselves up against it. My proudest moment, bizarrely, came towards the end of a match where we were on the receiving end of a good old-fashioned thumping, with the opposition coach insisting on playing full 15 minute quarters. As the goals flew in (against us!), not only did each boy battle valiantly for every ball but their shoulders never dropped – and they all wanted to have a spell in goal!

There were other rewarding moments, when things we had worked on during Games sessions were actually being played out (and working!), some memorable goals, excellent tackles and great saves. Over the course of the split season, every boy represented the school in a match. We tasted success and experienced defeat, all with an overriding sense of enjoyment. An action-packed and triumphant start to the season saw this newly Denstone Tournament 4th formed team hit the ground running with two straight wins and seven goals scored only three weeks in. Creating play and finding the back of the net soon became second nature and the girls were rewarded with a well-deserved fourth position in a challenging pool at the mid-season Denstone Tournament. Ever the voice of positivity and maturity, captain Genevieve Bright managed and organised her team with great success throughout and they finished the season on a high beating a quick Abberley team 5-2. It was a tough hockey season for the seconds who found themselves pitted against some very good Lost 6 sides, including a touring team from Spratton Hall. The results do not tell the full story â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the girls always fought valiantly and, more than once, lost by only a single goal. In training sessions with Miss Lowe, they developed their skills and

At Under 11 level, the girls know the basics and it is my opportunity to push them on and make them more Lost 4 rounded players. They worked hard on developing their reverse stick skills, in particular the reverse slap, and on speeding up the ball in set pieces to take the attack early to the opposition. Drawn

Our best games of the season were at the triangular away to Birchfield and Bromsgrove. The girls just clicked and played some of the finest hockey I have ever seen from this age group. Bromsgrove had no reply to the dazzling skills of Millie J-P in midfield and the hustle and bustle of Bella Timmis and Kiko Munakata. Notable accolades included Millie J-P winning Player of the Tournament at Malvern and Kiko being named the most promising hockey talent. Year 4, Millie Parry, also held her own against girls three years her senior. An impressive season in what was for some of the girls their first ever experience of playing hockey. Some played in both A and B teams and all were regularly up against older girls but this did not deter them! They took it all in their stride and performed excellently under pressure, demonstrating a variety of skills, which will set them up nicely for the winter season. Well done girls! Five years in to timetabled sessions for boys’ hockey it is more popular than ever. One major reason is because many coming into Year 7 have not played rugby, and hockey is a much easier game to pick up from scratch. This popularity spills over into Evening Clubs where I end up having to limit numbers. Hockey is a fast, skilful game and regular rule changes keep the sport evolving meaning you have to add new techniques, skills and tactics to your armoury – it keeps you on your toes! The boys’ skill levels are high and as hockey has a short, steep learning curve, we quickly get to the stage where we can have a recognisable and entertaining game. It is rare that we field a regular line-up for matches, something of a double-edged sword. We do not get consistency but many more boys have the chance to play. Consequently little emphasis is placed upon the final score (although we play to win!), and most games are divided into quarters allowing more opportunities for coaching. It is great to play other schools giving the boys the chance to experience the vitally important social side of the game. Hockey has enabled many non-rugby players to be involved in this cherished area of Packwood life. What a great sport! MAF

The boys played with superb determination this year. Consistently Lost 4 they came up against sides that were far greater in size (the average weight of our team was barely seven stone!) but their attitude was fantastic. Their defence was excellent and they demonstrated terrific handling skills and great teamwork. The game that demonstrated their tenacity to its full was against St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall; the final score was an eight try to six defeat, but the boys fought valiantly to the end scoring numerous late tries in awful conditions and pushing a much larger side to its limit. The team played in the King Williamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s College tournament on the Isle of Man and did particularly well to get through to the final. The Seconds have done remarkably well this Lost 3 season. They are a talented bunch though not especially awe-inspiring from a physical point of view. Hence we were occasionally Drawn

bullied by bigger sides but we also put together some really very good performances based on skill and speed. Due to the vagaries of the RFU, we no longer have a set team in this age group but a hotchpotch of sides all trying to satisfy the requirements of the opposition. As a result, consistency in performance was hard to achieve but, on the plus side, more boys were able to represent their school at the higher levels of rugby. There are now different rugby laws for each age group at prep school Lost 1 level â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a minefield for making fixtures against other schools with the composition of the team and match rules varying for each different opponent. Packwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third team includes many boys who are completely new to the sport and rugby is a game where the skills and laws are complex; technique is practised and honed over years, not weeks, and they find themselves on a very steep learning curve. With all of this in mind, I have been particularly pleased with the way in which they applied themselves in the handful of matches they had this season. It was a transient team, depending upon which format the other teams were playing, hence no squad list below. Seasoned veterans of the game who have been throwing a ball around since Acorns mixed with many of the newer additions to the school. The Packwood spirit quickly rubbed off on the latter and win or lose, the boys always played with a refreshing enthusiasm and a smile upon their faces. Well done. MAF Played

Articles continue to be published stating that the main reasons why Lost 5 children play rugby is to be with their mates, to have fun and to play in a team. The age of children being put under pressure to win is being left firmly in the past. We now look to the future and the things that matter: seeing a team develop on and off the field, and witnessing the progression and improvement from game to game. The growth and development in understanding about teamwork, sportsmanship and respect in each individual player is key to their future.

This group of boys completed a tough season of fixtures against a number of strong opponents. They fought together and created some memorable moments. The consistency was lacking at times but towards the end of the season, they managed to produce two fine performances in their last two games. Both the Under 11B and Under 10B sides practised their skills with great enthusiasm and improved rapidly over the season. Once they began to master the different formats of the game, they produced some exciting and flowing rugby. The group included some experienced Year 6 players and some who had never seen a rugby ball, hence early practices concentrated on the basics of passing, catching and tackling. The more technical aspects of the sport came later and a huge amount of progress was made by Easter. The standout rugby team of the Lost 0 2017-2018 season was this talented band of Under 10s. A big claim for such small boys in a school where rugby is followed with almost religious zeal, but as winners of the Bruno Rugby Bowl for the second year running, they have that right. From the Wykey to Sixways and the fields of Shrewsbury School, the focus was always on the passing, not the silverware. The boys played an exciting, fast moving style of rugby rarely seen in children so young. Defence was tight. Attacks were explosive. They always gave their best. These results do not really do Lost 7 justice to the team. The progression they made was terrific, probably more than any other team I have taken. The season did not get off to a very good start. If you take the tackle count as the score, then the first half of the first match was a 0-0 draw. Neither team put in any tackles, so the ball went from one end to the other.

After this, things could only get better. The very real possibility of having to play touch rugby for the rest of the season really spurred them into action, with the highlight being the magnificent display against Prestfelde, where everybody put their bodies on the line, and really did give 100%. I was very proud indeed that day of the effort the boys put in, and I hope they are proud of themselves as well. The Under 8s were strong and keen to play fixtures, although we had to wait a long time for matches Lost 0 because of the weather. The season began with closefought wins against a weaker Prestfelde Under 9 side and Birchfield Under 8s. The closest game though was the draw against Rydal, where both sides ran in thirteen tries. All boys in Year 3 played at least one game, with Henry, Oscar, George, Jonty and Luke all powerful runners who scored a number of tries. The Sevens team was superb this year. I was particularly impressed Lost 2 with their performance at the National Sevens where they played tremendously well beating Aysgarth, IAPS Kenya, Lord Wandsworth College and Wycliffe College. It was a season heavily affected by the weather meaning the boys did Drawn 1 not get a lot of match time, but they Lost 1 practised hard and were well on the way to working out how having fewer players on the pitch creates lots of advantages but also problems! In the end, their only outing was at the Packwood Festival where they achieved hard-fought wins over King Henry VIII School and Moulsford B. Notable performances included great running from Ollie Edwards and Finn Bowdler; Ollie Bingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s try-saving tackles, linking play and distribution; bulldozing runs from Freddie Shute that earned the team valuable metres; and Archie Harvey and Rory Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s superb tackling. A champagne season Thanks to the exceptional work of Mrs Draper over seasons past, Packwood Won 7 lacrosse stands on mighty Drawn 0 foundations. Under the professional Lost 0 tutelage and guidance of Mr Charles who was the coach this year, the girls have built on previous successes and, as results across all age groups attest, enjoyed another outstanding season.

Ten girls were selected for the Shropshire county squad – Lucy Clarke, Zennor, Venetia, Bea (who was made captain of the Shropshire B team), Genevieve, Flora, Liberty, Georgina, Claudia and Lucy Mielczarek. Both A and B teams played in the Northern Counties Tournament representing Shropshire, and both won! It was a fantastic day and the perfect way to round off a brilliant season.

In regular matches and almost all tournaments, the Packwood first lacrosse team has been unbeatable this season. Particular highlights were winning our own tournament, and being named Northern Schools’ champions after defeating Moreton Hall U14s, 9-4 and Shrewsbury High School U14s, 9-8. We won our triangular tournament during our lacrosse tour down south, including beating a strong side from St Paul’s, 2-1. Many players stood out this season including Genevieve, Bea and Venetia in defence who prevented innumerable attempts on goal. LACROSSE Mr Charles, our coach, helped us all massively, from the youngest beginners in Year 3 to the old hands in the senior squad. Training sessions were always fun and he gave us tips and excellent coaching to help us through our toughest matches. In years to come, when we look back at the spring term of 2018, the children will remember the endless snowy days playing in the Packwood grounds while games staff will recall with frustration the loss of many hours of valuable practice time and more and more matches succumbing to the snow, ice and rain. In the end, we felt incredibly fortunate to salvage five matches and, despite everything, we did jolly well! The girls trained hard to improve their skills and tactical set pieces and they gave their best on court, especially in defence where they were outstanding. Despite their skill, determination and tactical prowess, successful conversion from attacking play eluded them on two occasions and they failed to score the goals needed to snatch victory. Losing by one goal to Adcote was a painful defeat and a loss against Moor Park certainly gave the girls a reminder never to rest on your laurels! However, they responded brilliantly and went on to

impressive victories over Moreton Hall, Yarlet and Terra Nova accumulating 49 goals and conceding only 22. The girls supported and encouraged one another to achieve their best and to persevere when things got tough, a true reflection of Packwood spirit. The Seconds played fewer matches than planned in the netball season Lost 3 as many were cancelled due to the snowy weather. It was certainly a challenging season; extreme weather and the usual Lost 2 school bugs that plague the spring term meant many team practices and fixtures were lost. There were few opportunities for the girls to play matches but when they did, they rose to the challenge and did a fine job representing themselves and Packwood. Netball is very much a team sport and the girls supported and encouraged one another brilliantly, even when things were going against them. A notable win against Moor Park was the pinnacle of the season for the 3rd VII, being the only Packwood team on the day to achieve such success. Drawn

The zonal areas of responsibility took time to establish, but during the term, they became more confident in holding their space, not clogging up the centre third. Positivity and encouragement were at the core of this team of girls who never gave anything less than 100% throughout the season, supporting each other through the tough results and cheering their successes. They focused on working the ball down the court fluently and efficiently, and eliminating ‘snow balls’ from their throwing. They demonstrated these skills to great effect in their early-season win over Moreton Hall. The girls’ flexibility allowed them easily to switch positions to find their niche. The season highlight was a comfortable win against Prestfelde, where the girls showed their maturity and the progress they had made. A promising season for a group of determined netballers. The boys did Lost 2 incredibly well to make it to the Bunbury Cup Midlands Final and, against an opposition side that had six county and two district players, they performed admirably losing by small margins. Many of the Seconds featured heavily in a busy Lost 2 and successful Under 12 season as well. The team was well led by Edward Scott, who backed up his authoritative opening batting with a sound understanding of the game. In most games, the top order set about blasting as many runs as possible off the 20 or 25 overs allocated. There were 50s for Edward, Tom Bright and Rufus, who took the game well away from most teams with his wonderfully aggressive batting. Bowling was a team affair with Felix, Tom Kenyon, Hal, Henry, Charlie, Elliot and Jack all taking wickets. Our harder matches were early on, where our second-string team managed to run Prestfelde close during Shrewsbury scholarship week. The Downs proved our strongest opposition in the second half of the season, after a series of straightforward wins. Some good catches backed up by Felixâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quick bowling restricted them to a manageable total, which Rufus and co were soon able to chase down. This was a team with strong depth also, with wicketkeeper Tom Thurstan and all-rounder Charlie also scoring runs through the season. In our first games sessions, after the rain abated, it soon became clear that there was a lot of talent in this team and most pleasingly that all members could bowl.

A side depleted by the Shrewsbury scholarships took on Prestfelde and played a close and competitive match, just falling short. The only other matches were two big wins. Away at St Mary’s Hall, Packwood posted a hefty total led by Casper and Christian. Thereafter, each player bowled and the wickets were shared – special mention to Tom Hughes and Kutenda for wicket maidens. Against The Downs, Arthur and Christian made 50s to help the team to 248. The boys backed up their good batting with superb bowling, especially from Taizo and Theo. Several boys also played in mixed matches towards the end of term against Rydal. A 100% winning season, albeit Lost 0 with only a few matches played. When the weather finally improved, the boys were more than ready to take on anybody. A convincing away win against Prestfelde (always good!) started them off with good batting performances from all, especially Tom Williams. At Shrewsbury High, the boys dominated again with everybody playing well as a team. In our last game against St Mary’s Hall, many boundaries were smashed and a convincing 180 runs scored in 20

overs. The boys limited them to a mere 100 and claimed another convincing victory. Overall, it was an excellent season for these enthusiastic boys, who approached every games session with the same energy and eagerness as their matches. Well done! 2018 proved to be a successful season despite the poor weather conditions early on. The boys responded incredibly well having to cope with damp conditions and were rewarded with glorious weather throughout June and some excellent performances with bat and ball. George Leese claimed the most wickets (12 wickets at a cost of seven runs each) followed by Archie Harvey (six wickets). Oliver Edwards was definitely the star performer with the bat, scoring 173 runs at an average of 57, and he coped brilliantly with the pressures of captaincy. Ollie Bing also had an impressive season and won the all-round prize at the end of term. He made many good contributions with the bat, and claimed three catches and three run outs as our wicketkeeper – his incredible diving catch against Terra Nova U12 was certainly the champagne moment in the field.

It was great to see the development Lost 1 in the boys’ bowling and batting over our very successful season, founded on two utterly dependable players: Robert, the captain, and William. As keen as mustard and reliable openers, they invariably gave us a good start scoring bags of runs between them. Ed was our strongest striker of the ball and an accurate fast bowler too, while Harry contributed well as a sharp and reliable bowler. We had two rapidly improving sly, slow bowlers in Henry and Tom, who both gained a four-wicket haul in matches at the end of the season. Simon was new to the game but soon found his batting groove. In the last match against St Bede’s A team, with pressure building, he scored 14 runs in five balls to win the game. They were a fun bunch to coach, and show great promise for next year. This year we only played pairs Lost 0 cricket at this level and we played on a slightly shorter wicket as advised by the ECB, which paid great dividends. All the boys made excellent progress, whatever their starting point, and we learned both from the things that went well, but also the mistakes that we

made. With pairs cricket it really is a team effort, everyone contributes to the team, whether bowling, batting or fielding. The strength of the C team was their enthusiasm to do their best. It is a strange anomaly in Under 9 cricket that the better bowling team often lose, simply because, if the ball is bowled straight it is easier to hit!

We spent a lot of time early on perfecting a smooth delivery and trying to produce a good line and length consistently. I was pleased then, when in our very first match we bowled well – but were hit for many boundaries. Had we held our catches, however, the outcome would have been different. There is much to learn in cricket – stroke play, fielding positions, weather conditions, bowling styles and more. The boys soak it all up and it is always satisfying when you see something freshly learned implemented in a game situation. Every boy represented the school and all played well, winning their fair share, and losing some because they were good! Under 11A The growing profile of Drawn 0 Lost 0 women’s Terra Nova Tournament Winners cricket inspired IAPS U11 Tournament Runners-up this group of girls to get out there and play! They had a phenomenal debut, winning the Terra Nova tournament. They quickly settled into a routine on the pitch, learning when to take the risks and when to defend their wickets. They racked up the runs in each game, even reaching 285 at one point! However, the highlight of the season came with a superb second place at the IAPS U11 Tournament. There were plenty of significant catches, stumped and bowled wickets and boundary stops all expertly overseen by captain, Millie Jones-Perrott. It was a pleasure to coach such a talented group of cricketers and they have certainly set a high standard for the future! Played

Girls’ cricket has developed apace this year with the emphasis Lost 3 on cricket rather than rounders. The girls have refined their batting and bowling and have played the game in many formats including indoor, outdoor, hardball and softball. Progress has been outstanding, not least from Irene Tabuyo Castell who had never played cricket before and ended the season representing the A team! Other standout players include Genevieve and Lucy with the bat, Zennor, Liberty and Genevieve (again!) with the ball. Bea was a reliable wicket keeper and Millie showed her terrific potential playing in the Under 13s while still only an Under 11. The results speak for themselves. The girls did well in the Lady Taverners Indoor Competition in the spring term. The wet weather at the start of the summer term meant indoor cricket continued but as the sun came out the girls were able to play more hardball outdoor cricket, and with great success including beating Malvern in the final over. The girls played alongside the boys in Mixed Sixes Cricket and we fielded three mixed Under 13 teams against Rydal, winning all three games. A great way to end a satisfying season! An excellent season of cricket for this developing squad, with Lost 0 many of the girls new to the sport this term. They started well and after a crash course in the basics, really got to grips with their batting and the accuracy of their bowling. The highlight of the season came from a comfortable win against Ellesmere, where Alexis bowled the perfect over, leading her team to victory! Under 11A The rounders season got off Drawn 0 Lost 1 to a great start Packwood Tournament 4th with the girls adapting quickly to new positions, backing each other up and calling for the ball. In training, they focused hard on fielding and batting techniques and had a close opening match against Prestfelde. Their continued diligence paid off in an impressive mid-season victory over Adcote, with the team working in unison to achieve an excellent result. The final success of the season came from a great fourth place at the Packwood Tournament where the girls scored an impressive number of rounders. Played

Although cricket is becoming the main summer sport for girls, there is still Won 4 much love for the traditional game of Drawn 0 rounders and so time for it was set aside Lost 2 each week – after all, any practice of throwing, batting and catching is invaluable for both sports. The girls were determined to make the most of their six fixtures. They played with enthusiasm and enjoyment and achieved some great results. Lucy and Francia were super captains and great ambassadors as was Flora, who captained the team of Year 8 Daughters in their match against the Mothers on Leavers’ Day and led her team to victory! The girls had an encouraging Lost 3 season, especially as they had previously played very little rounders or none at all. They developed their knowledge and understanding of the game, their batting and throwing technique, positioning and when to run and not to run. They played many matches against schools where

Horse sense The first day of competition was devoted to dressage tests and show jumping. Day two was cross-country day comprising two roads and tracks sections; a selection of steeplechase fences jumped at galloping speed and last of all, the cross-country discipline, jumping a variety of obstacles including ditches, water jumps and solid wooden fences. The 80cm team including Venetia, Sienna and Felix finished as runners-up overall, and the 90cm team (Zennor, Archie Tulloch and Archie Barlow) went one better, claiming not only team victory but also individual first place and the trophy for the best dressage test for Zennor rounding off a perfect weekend for her. Our year started with our annual trip to South View Equestrian Centre in search of qualifications for the NSEA Championships. Our horses and riders did not disappoint and came away with 70cm and 80cm qualifications in the Jumping with Style competitions. A great start! The Championships at Addington soon followed and Archie Tulloch, Archie Barlow, Felix Barlow, Venetia Hamilton, Bella Timmis and Sienna Matson did a respectable job in good company riding some very decent rounds between them. After a quiet winter, Packwood’s riders were back in action in May, competing at the Princethorpe College two-day event – and it proved a very successful occasion with both teams finishing strongly.

Following the successes at Princethorpe, Zennor, Archie T, Archie B and Felix headed to the Broadway one-day event in June. They capped off their year with a team win in the 90cm class with Archie T taking individual second. He then went on to an individual win in the 100cm class – an outstanding achievement. All the riders have qualified for the NSEA Eventing Championships in October. Overall, it has been a super year with some great riding and fabulous horses and ponies. It was a great pleasure to award Riding colours to Archie Barlow for a successful year and in recognition of his contribution to Packwood riding throughout his time here. JW

CROSS COUNTRY

Up hill and down dale For the Sixes Cross Country races, running conditions were perfect on our undulating mile-long course. The senior boys set the standard with George Hughes, Tom Thurstan and Orlando Bayliss all finishing in under seven minutes. The girls’ race was a family affair for the top two spots: Liberty Clarke and Lucy Clarke closely followed by Claudia Tate in third position. The top three junior boys were Teddy Geary, Ollie Edwards and Barney Parry and the top junior girl was Bella Timmis who stormed home finishing in fourth position overall, a very impressive performance indeed. However, the most important part of this competition is that everyone takes part and runs to the best of their ability to earn points for their Six. Mannings/Sodens won for the second year in a row and retained the Waterhouse Cup. There were only a couple of opportunities to participate in competitions this year. First at the Shrewsbury School XC Championship where the course is tough and competition always fierce. The Under 11 boys had a great day with Monty Woodhouse finishing fifth overall and Teddy Geary, sixth. Ably supported by Johnnie Thurstan (22nd) and Barney Parry (26th) who ran their socks off, the team finished in third place. The Under 13 boys only had three runners. Tom Thurstan finished 10th in a very competitive field, Freddie Timmis 20th and David Shannon 22nd.

As usual, the season ended with the Shrewsbury High Prep competition and, as usual, conditions were very wet indeed! In this event, the children run their individual race and afterwards take part in a relay race too. Despite Teddy’s best efforts, the U11 boys struggled but the U13 boys had a ball and regained the team trophy that Packwood last won in the magical 2011-12 season (when the U13s won everything they entered, including the Nationals at Malvern). It was a great effort from all: George Hughes (fifth), Tom Thurstan (sixth), Ed Scott (11th), Freddie Timmis (13th), Orlando Bayliss (14th) and David Shannon (19th), and a fantastic second in the relay. Thank you all for another truly amazing year, especially my fellow coaches Will Holcroft and David Gregory. Winning one British Fencing medal is a great achievement for any school. This year Packwood Fencing Team celebrated its 50th GB Team medal and 16th GB Individual medal. The Boys U11 team made it into the GB quarter-finals again, knocking out old rivals Sussex House en route, but the girls went further with another memorable double GB podium under the management of Captain, Bea Grigg. In 2011, 14 Packwoodians won caps for their region, but that record was beaten this year with 19 Packwood fencers receiving the West Midland call-up, many of them at Under 10. In fact, so big has been the take up of the sport among the juniors that the activity has been given a second afternoon and there is even talk of expanding to the Acorns too! Boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Captain, Edward Scott won an All-Rounder Scholarship to Shrewsbury School, both captains (Ed and Bea) won academic scholarships, as did Venetia. Liberty won a Sports Scholarship to Moreton Hall and Elsa Waterhouse won an Art Scholarship. Their success is down to discipline, hard work and commitment, all qualities engendered and refined in Packwood Fencing Club. NW

SWIMMING / TENNIS

Swimming The children continue to enjoy swimming with the serious business of improving stroke technique and stamina mixed with fun games and activities that all help to increase water confidence and teamwork, including a synchronized routine choreographed by the Year 3 and 4 girls. Thursday evening training sessions at Shrewsbury School continued and the team took part in two galas. In the County Prep School gala at Old Hall there were wins for Isaac Melia (25m backstroke), Alexia Dobbs (25m breaststroke) and a relay victory for the Year 5 boys (Zac Wasteney, Teddy Geary, Henry Longfellow and Isaac). At the Abberley Gala, Florence Acton, Joseph Bowdler, Francia Besterman, Genevieve Bright, Morgan Matthews, Freddie Timmis and the Under 12 Girls medley relay team won their races.

Seven swimmers (Morgan, Lucy Mielczarek, Claudia Tate and Isaac, Zac, Teddy and Henry) took part in the IAPS regionals. There was success for the younger boys, winning both the freestyle and individual medley relays, but the standout performance came from Morgan. He qualified for the IAPS national final, held at one of the Olympic pools at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, built for the London 2012 Games. Morgan was awarded his swimming colours for his outstanding achievement and for all he has contributed to Packwood swimming. The Sixesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; relays at the end of the year were as fiercely competitive as ever. However, with Morgan on their team, there was only ever going to be one winner and so it was that McFerran/Wilsons claimed the Prosser Cup. SH

Tennis All age groups had the opportunity to play tennis weekly during the summer term and to hone their skills. Unfortunately, there were very few fixtures due to other sporting commitments. The annual Repton Tournament fell on our first exeat this year so only two Under 13 pairs entered. Grateful thanks to Tom Bright, Ed Scott, Genevieve Bright and Liberty Clarke for giving up a day of their cherished exeat! A week later 11 pairs participated in the Moreton Hall Tennis Tournament in the Under 13 and Under 11 age groups with an impressive number of games won. There were two fixtures against Ellesmere for the Under 13, Under 12 and Under 11 girls' teams, which Packwood narrowly lost 3-4. The term ended with a very successful parent/child tennis tournament. In the U13 final, Archie Barlow and his mother beat Tom Bright and his father. Daniel Garrett and his mother beat Henry Longfellow and his father to win the U11 final, and Jonty Barber and his father beat George Cecil and his mother in the U9 final. All games were played in a great spirit and it was terrific to have such a large number of competitors â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 17 pairs in total.

Staff news The natural ebb and flow of working life saw several new members of staff arriving this year and others hanging up their Packwood boots for good. We welcomed Alice Leslie to the English Department where she has made an instant and positive impact working with the Year 5s. Alice has also been a busy and popular member of the boarding team in Park House. Later in the year, Emily Cooper (OP) and Fenella Nicholas (mother of two OPs) returned to the Packwood fold. As a Gap Student, Emily’s responsibilities are many and varied helping in myriad ways around the school. Fenella’s sporting prowess, her enthusiasm and zest for life made her the obvious choice to take over the tennis and lacrosse coaching roles. Finally, our new Head of Maths, Mark Collins joined in the summer term. He was an instant hit with the children and staff alike, who value his endearing sense of humour, his no-nonsense approach and his ready willingness to throw himself fully into Packwood life. We wish all the new arrivals many long and happy years at Packwood, as have been enjoyed by our much-loved departing colleagues.

Moving on this year are two of the school’s most dedicated members of staff, Richard Herzog and Jane Jones, both of whom have given 35 years’ exemplary service to Packwood. Richard joined as an assistant Science teacher and for the past 20 years has been Head of the Science Department, which has flourished under his leadership. Outstanding exam results and pupils’ unwavering enthusiasm for the subject are attributable to his unique blend of innovation and tradition. Beyond this, he has been a stalwart on the games field (cricket in particular) and in the rifle shooting range, and a masterful fireworks technician every Packwood Bonfire Night. He has shared with the children his passion for field sports and natural history through fishing trips, game fairs and fly tying. He has been a privilege to work with – a wise and thoughtful colleague, a great character and a wonderful wit. In her time at Packwood, Jane too has done many jobs, always to an exceptional standard and with her trademark good humour. At first, a superb school cook; it was not long before Jane (and husband Nick) became house parents of Park House, where she showed a devoted commitment to the happiness and wellbeing of the girl boarders. She ran the

STAFF NEWS / OLD PACKWOODIANS school shop, helped with girls’ games, and ran cookery clubs and activities in the Food Technology Room that she designed. She accompanied more than 20 leavers’ trips, organised innumerable school events (from barbecues to dog shows to balls), stepped in as boys’ house parent for four years, worked in the school office, and produced unforgettable costumes for many, many drama productions. We also say goodbye to Ali Banks who was School Nurse and Matron in the boys’ boarding house. Kind, compassionate and always smiling, Ali’s mere presence was enough to make everyone feel better. English and Maths teacher, Sarah Lowe, has long harboured a wish to work in Scotland so, although we will miss her greatly, not only in the classroom but also on the sports field where she has worked wonders with hockey in particular, we were delighted to hear of her new job, just outside Edinburgh. Lacrosse coach, David Charles, had a short but strikingly successful time at Packwood, helping the Under 13A team to a fantastic season and advancing the skills of all those he coached. Lastly, Jonty Hall, another OP, heads to university after his time as a Gap Student

during which he has provided support in the classroom and assisted with boys’ boarding and games.

The governing body also saw some changes this year. Mark Turner, Headmaster of Shrewsbury School, leaves us as he relocates to Vancouver Island for his next Headship. Mark’s insights on education, teaching and learning have seen him working on the Education Committee as well as the full Board. Richard Tovey, former Headmaster of Tockington Manor, Chair of the Education Committee, has given a remarkable 33 years’ service. His wise and thoughtful contributions have been much valued and we wish him well in his retirement. Finally, our Chair of Governors, Liz Lewis, is stepping down. A Governor since 2007 and Chair since 2012, her strong and calm leadership has helped steer the Packwood ship safely and she now hands over the Chairmanship, allowing her more time for two of her favourite pastimes: gardening and skiing.

2012 leavers’ reunion It is always a pleasure to see former pupils back at school and the tradition of inviting back those who left five years previously makes for a very convivial occasion at the start of the autumn term. By this stage, the OPs have received their A level results and conversation buzzes around gap year plans and university choices.

Our 2012 leavers enjoyed a delicious lunch in the Front Hall early in September and made the most of the chance to catch up with former schoolmates. Many are still in regular contact, testament to the lasting friendships they made at Packwood, while for some it was the first time they had seen each other since they left. Everyone enjoyed reminiscing about prep school days, exploring their old haunts and hearing about each other’s plans for the future.

2012 Jack Ashworth played first team hockey at Shrewsbury. After a gap year in New Zealand, he is going to Oxford Brookes University. Hermione Bathurst directed the house play at Rugby. She passed three A levels and Grade 8 LAMDA. She hopes to become a journalist. Edward Beard played first team cricket, hockey and rackets at Rugby. He is working in Chicago as a rackets pro for part of his gap year before going to Bristol University having got A*, A, A in his A levels. Tara Beasley was Head Girl at Moreton Hall. She was in the North of England Lacrosse A team and the Shropshire Lacrosse A team, as well as the school first teams for lacrosse and hockey. She got A, B, B in her Drama, Spanish and Economics A levels and is going to Manchester University. Cassie Bedford got A, A, B in her Maths, Economics and Geography A levels and after a gap year working in a law firm in Australia will take up her place to study Marketing at Exeter University. She won Gold in the Under 18 National Schools Fives Doubles tournament. Freddie Beharrell was House Captain at Uppingham and was in the first teams for rugby and athletics. He passed three A levels and after a gap year is going to study Business Management at university. Harriet Bibby got A*, A, A in her A levels and Grade 8 LAMDA. She is going to study English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin.

Poppy Carver got A, B, B in her A levels and after a gap year travelling is going to the University of Reading to study Graphic Communication. Ollie Clarke is planning a gap year travelling in India before starting an apprenticeship. Emily Cooper has passed courses in Early Years teaching and at the Leith’s School of Food and Wine. She helped in the PE department at Moreton Hall for two years and is currently a Gap Student at Packwood. Fergus David is hoping to go to either Durham or Bath University after a gap year working and travelling.

Hugh Davies qualified for the Horse of the Year Show twice and will spend his gap year riding in The Netherlands, Spain and Belgium before going to the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester in autumn 2018. Ella Downey was a prefect and Head of House at Cheltenham Ladies’ College. She was an art scholar, passed Grade 8 Musical Theatre, Grade 7 LAMDA, three A levels (graded A, A, C) and was awarded a travel scholarship. After a gap year, she is going to drama school. Rory Fergusson got A, B, B in his A levels and is heading to university to read History of Art after a gap year doing a ski season and travelling in Asia and Europe. Jonty Hall had a brief spell at Packwood as a Gap Student before going to the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester. At Malvern, he played first team tennis. Juliana Hinwood played county lacrosse for Shropshire and was captain of the first team at school. She was also in the National Children’s Choir. She hopes to study Veterinary Science at university. Freddie Houlker is planning a gap year before going to university. Olivia Hughes got three Bs at A level, passed her Grade 8 flute and played first team netball at school. She is going to study Children’s Nursing at the University of Hertfordshire. Louis Martin played first team hockey at Adams’ Grammar and for the regional team. He has done voluntary work in Kenya and is going to Cardiff University to study Politics and International Relations. He hopes to become a journalist. Guy Morris played first team tennis and rugby at Shrewsbury. He got A*, A, A in his A levels and is going to study Mechanical Engineering at Bristol. He won a National Royal Marine Cadet competition while at school and in future hopes to become an Infantry Officer. Bea Mostyn-Owen won the sixth form Modern History Prize at Rugby School and got A, A, B in her A levels. After a gap year working and travelling in India and Thailand, she is going to Edinburgh University.

2014 Sybilla and Octavia Hamilton were runners-up in the National Tetrathlon Championships in Yorkshire 2017 with their team of four from the Wheatland Pony Club. James Hinwood represented Great Britain at the European Fencing Confederation cadet tournament in Klagenfurt in Austria. 2015 Edward Don, former Captain of Fencing at Packwood, won the Under 17 Elite Epee competition in February 2018 to become Welsh champion.

Edward Myddelton plans to travel in New Zealand and Australia before going to the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester in autumn 2018. Sacha Robertson won the upper sixth overall academic prize at Tudor Hall. After a gap year, she hopes to go to either the University of St Andrews or Durham to read Classics.

2017 Alex Barry took part in a national computational thinking challenge at his new school, Sutton Valence. He was awarded a certificate for the Best in School and helped his team achieve a better overall average than other students, not only in Kent but in the country as a whole.

Tim Robinson-Boulton played first team football for MPW Birmingham for a year and was in the national 4 x 200m relay team. He is going to study Fine Art at the University of Falmouth. Thomas Simpson passed his BTEC in Countryside Management and is going to university after a gap year. Thomas Tulloch was a prefect at Shrewsbury. He got A, A, B in his A levels and is going to university after a gap year travelling in New Zealand. Florence Wade-Smith got two A* (Maths, Physics) and two A (Chemistry, Further Maths) grades at A level and won a place at Imperial College, London to study Chemical Engineering. She was Captain of Lacrosse at Moreton Hall and captained Shropshire Under 19 and North of England Under 19A lacrosse teams. Simon Waterhouse did A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and is going to Bath University to study Molecular & Cellular Biology.
