Welcome to the 20th Anniversary of the St Louis Pagan Picnic Wow.. We made it! 20 years of the Pagan Picnic in Tower Grove Park, St Louis, Missouri. That is 20 years of Fun, Comraderie, Education and Fellowship! This is not only a milestone for the Picnic, but for the Pagan Community as a whole. For 20 years we have been able to join others with similiar beliefs and spiritual practices in a safe, fun environment to share ideas, join in community ritual or just to share a heavenly empanada. This same community has come together numerous times to ensure the continuation of the Picnic even though at times it seemed the tradition was destined to end. River Higginbotham has provided an Article: Pagan Picnic – How and why we have it and what it means to me in this program book chronicling the entire 20 year history of the Pagan Picnic. Please be sure and read it in entirety. It is an amazing story of the early beginnings, the struggles and the triumphs! Flyers and Program books throughout the years are also included. Thank you River! New this year to Picnic, Charlie Bettis will be leading Panel Discussion at 11am on Saturday and Sunday in the Bardic Circle. Stop by and add your voice! Also, Rhythm Village is a new addition to the Picnic. There will drumming and merriment all weekend in the Village with special workshops as well. Please stop by the Raffle Booth and check out what our generous vendors and supporters have donated. The Raffle is a major event for the Picnic but this year there is a Special Raffle in addition to the regular drawing. A proud Picnic supporter has donated a Quilt made from the tshirts of prior Pagan Picnics. Thank you for this special gift! (hugs to come when I see you) Thank you for allowing me to a part of such an enduring event. And a huge THANK YOU to those that have shed blood, sweat and tears to make this event a success year after year after year. May it be strong in the Future! SO MOTE IT BE! 20 Years of Community - The History of the Picnic Pagan Picnic – How and why we have it and what it means to me By River Higginbotham, June 2012 Who: The St. Louis Pagan Community. What: The St. Louis Pagan Picnic – one of the largest annual free public gatherings of pagans and pagan friendly people in the world. When: In the summer, when the days are long and warm and when joy and expansion are the mood of everything that grows. Where: St. Louis Region, St. Louis Missouri, in the city, Tower Grove Park Why: Because the communities need and want it. The pagan community wants to gather, network, exchange, celebrate, support and reach out. The Greater St. Louis metro community evolves and discovers itself and is learning it has a thriving pagan vitality running through it. Picnic helps spread that message and offers seekers an entrance into Paganism in St. Louis. How: Sweat and focus by a series of dedicated organizer teams. It has been sort of a relay. And we keep passing that baton along and holding it high. Impact, Meaning, Importance, Legacy, Foundation: Ground breaking opportunity for local pagans to meet each other, to be openly pagan in public for the first time, to begin the process to educate the greater St. Louis community that pagans are here, that pagans need not be feared nor persecuted, that pagans in St. Louis are fun loving, family oriented, generous and open minded, that it is possible for pagans to collaborate for the common good, even if defining a common pagan is not easy to do. History of the Picnic and Personal Recollections But Who really? People. Hungry people. Pagan people. Pagan people hungry for company, companionship, and community and more tolerance, understanding and even acceptance from the greater community in St. Louis and the region created the St. Louis Pagan Picnic as it exists today. No one planned to do it. No marketing guru or Big Name Pagan swept in to deliver to the pagans in St. Louis a big pagan event for them. No. Back in 1993 there was just hunger but no answers. That year there were actually two little kinda private/ kinda open gatherings of pagans. They were the seeds. Larry Brown, our Elbee, became the gardener and planted the “picnic” seed again the following season. As much as Elbee is the father or our picnic, Cheryl Brown is certainly its mother. Together in the summer of 1994 Elbee and Cheryl planned for the “2nd Annual Pagan Picnic” as they called it then. The Gurney Site in the west end of Tower Grove Park was reserved for Saturday July 23rd. Then Elbee and Cheryl papered south city with fliers and signs announcing the event and inviting one and all to come join the fun. Opening and closing rituals were planned – rituals that would be the largest public pagan rituals ever conducted in St. Louis. Elbee and Cheryl believed it was time for pagans to exit the proverbial broom closet of secrecy and fear and step into the daylight of the public eye. On the day over 250 people showed up and circled together. The reactions were strong and positive among the pagans present. I was there and was really pleased and surprised to see so many of us there. The reactions varied. Some were shocked, pleasantly

Journey Through the Archetypes - 2013 Archetype means original pattern. An essential inspiration.

A blueprint for possibility.

We will look at archetypes as patterns in our personal lives and our culture, in a series of monthly weekend gatherings held in St. Louis. The Tarot will serve as a guide for exploring archetypes and the pattern of our soul’s becoming. In the first three months we will encounter:

The Magician – the reality maker and the mystery of creative expression The Priestess – the mystic within and the mystery of moving between the worlds The Empress – the Great Mother and the mystery of abundance and nurturance This work is offered by a new group: The Grove. The founders of Diana’s Grove Mystery School are retiring at the end of 2012 and dissolving their long-running Mystery School. A group of former staff and students have created a new organization that builds on the skills, philosophy, and tradition of excellence, learned there. We invite you to step onto the path of this journey and become part of our new community by joining us in 2013. surprised, overjoyed or just amazed. The public reaction was mild and positive. No protesters. No complaints. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch covered the event and published a very nice color photo of Dana Eilers calling the Southern Quarter, realm of Fire, backed by a large circle of her brave publically pagan friends. In that photo, Elbee, who was the high priest for the ritual, is pictured standing in the center of the circle with his right hand raised. It is what I consider a watershed event. The day we had there and the number of people who came out told me and others that there was a need, a hunger, a yearning for more connection and more public expression of our pagan community culture. The seed planted that season had undoubtedly sprouted. What was next? What would grow? In the days, weeks and months following that Picnic a number of us talked and tried to make sense of what we had just experienced. Eventually a handful of folks – including me, Elbee, Dana Eilers, Richard Roby, Mary Windrider, Cliff and others – formed a small organization that was named Omnistic Fellowship or OF. As OF we sensed the yearning for greater community and for coming out into the public but we did not know how best to move forward. We decided to just get as many people together as we could from the pagan, new age and occult groups we knew and have a discussion and see what input that would give us. That meeting was held in April 1995. Lots of ideas emerged. There was lots of debate on whether being public about our religious beliefs was wise or was essential. In the end, the group decided to meet again to get more specific about plans to be more public. On the second meeting that group of individuals present decided to call the new community-focused group the Council for Alternative Spiritual Traditions – CAST. Hence, CAST was created and the first thing it did was to say to Elbee “We really want to see the Pagan Picnic happen again. So what can we do to help?” With that Elbee suddenly had a much larger team of volunteers and lots more creative energy. Spring had sprung and the little seed was now definitely growing! Officially the 3rd Picnic was sponsored by both OF and CAST. Elbee was the lead coordinator, a role we playfully called “Poobah”. Generally Elbee called the shots and the rest of the team worked to help him do what needed doing. We estimate that 350 people turned out in Tower

Grove Park at the Gurney picnic site the following July. The increase in numbers helped us know that we were indeed on the right track. More volunteers joined CAST and we all happily focused on making the Picnic even better in the future. So the “relay baton” of Pagan Picnic initially held by Elbee and Cheryl (and their fellow coveners in Yarrow) now was in the “hands” of CAST. The 4th St. Louis Pagan Picnic in July of 1996 was an even bigger event and success. Attendance was put at around 700 and we all felt that momentum was increasing in the community for this type of public event. It was a bit amazing to me and to many of us that we could attract hundreds of pagans to be publically pagan and be proud of it. It was a time of euphoria and of great satisfaction. And it was also hard work but very rewarding work. Many good friendships were forged in those years that continue to endure these many years later. A major step in the evolution of the picnic was the decision to expand the event to two days for the 5th Picnic held in 1997. Mark “Boss” Leavy was a strong supporter of going to the two day picnic. He stepped up to join ElBee as co-lead coordinator. Two days meant more complexity and more opportunity to reach more people. We estimate that approximately 1200 people came to at least part of the Picnic that season. By now workshops were being offered in an organized fashion, there was music, there were multiple rituals and vendors. Part of the legacy of Pagan Picnic is the Pagan Pride Project founded by Cecylyna Brightsword -- now Cecylyna Dewr. She and others came to the picnic this year to study event and our success. They then modeled what we now know as Pagan Pride Days, in part, on the approaches and activities seen at the St. Louis Pagan Picnic. Today, as Pagan Pride Days are held all over the world. For the 6th St. Louis Pagan Picnic in 1998, Elbee retired from the lead Coordinator role and focused on working with vendor coordination. Kris “Gypsy” Dolgos took a turn as co-lead coordinator along with Boss. She helped introduce the idea of having a theme for each Picnic. Celebrating our Youth was chosen as the first official theme. Community response continued to grow and attendance hit 1800. Picnic was beginning to require a really large team of dedicated volunteers. The way it worked then and for the several years before and after was that people interested in supporting and volunteering to help with the Picnic generally joined CAST and then worked on tasks as determined by the coordinators or on improving aspects of the Picnic as they saw the need and were willing to step into an organizing role. The team continued to grow along with the size of the Picnic. One thing that was not growing was the space on the west end of Tower Grove Park. A gathering of 1800 people was more than three normal picnic sites could support and the Park management made some changes we had to adjust to for the following year. They wanted us to move to the East end of the park, where Picnic is held today and they increased the usage fee significantly as they now considered Pagan Picnic a special event! The new location within the park for 1999 and all the logistics challenges that came with it needed a lot of attention. I became more and more involved with the site prep and setup aspects of the picnic. This 7th Picnic also offered another new face a chance to co-lead the coordination - Krissy Kuesel joined Boss as coordinator for this one. The theme was – A Look Back at our Past. T-shirts were produced this year with a design by Julee Higginbotham featuring a wide assortment of pagan symbols from many times and traditions. Attendance also continued to grow and we estimated that over 2000 folks came to or through the picnic. This was also the first picnic with a dunking booth! Dunking Boss, Elbee, Gypsy, Elbee, Tom Chapin, Papa Wee Wee and others was very popular and raised some good money for supporting Picnic. With the turn of the Century Picnic continued on strong. This time Gypsy returned to the lead coordinator role, but was alone as Poobah in the year 2000. Boss took a bit of a break and was “only” responsible for the Security team for this one. The theme for the 8th picnic was – Discovery: The Journey Within. The T-shirts were a distinctive dark green with a red “8” formed by a snake eating its tail – an

You will also have a chance to contribute to the legacy of our pagan picnic by letting us record your story. Opportunities will be made to do this on paper or possibly on video. We plan to have this workshop videotaped and recorded. Those not wishing to be on camera will be accommodated. Also, if you are willing to provide your stories on paper you can get a form from the information tent and turn in at the workshop, or pick up a form at the workshop and later drop it off at the information tent.

Awaken the Ancient Healer Within Patti Pellerito Emanating from the stars and planets, this energy flows through the cosmos. Arriving on Earth, transmitting its strength to the kingdoms of Nature; from there it flows into our energetic subtle bodies, then through the physical body, to end its course in the cells and the DNA, establishing the link between heaven and earth. Sound Journey into Bliss the magical world of sounds is a precious additive to develop our receptivity toward the vital forces of Nature. Using Tibetan Sing- ing Bowls, Planetary Gongs (Nibiru- the energy of transformation and Chiron - energy of the Wounded Healer) and other instruments. Enhancing our sensitivity (our ability to sense on a more subtle level, within our bodies). Re- juvenate and shift our consciousness to the synchronicities of the dream and wake state.

WORKSHOPS Bardic Expression: The importance of rhyme, rhythm and song in ritual and out Lady Kestryl Whether it is the chants used in ritual to raise or calm energy, the poetry of a quarter call or the Charge of the Goddess, the performance of a mythological play as a teaching tool in ritual or the music used to meditate to, go on a spiritual journey with or other creative expression we may use to express our connection to the Divine, the skills required are ones we all have. We do not have to be able to carry a tune to chant properly. We do not have to have a true sense of the poetic side of the English language to write our expressions of the Divine and we all have something Bardic about us, if only we know how to see/hear/experience it. Lady Kestryl Moonfox teaches in this class just how to go about finding one’s own Bardic voice and skill base and how to hone it to help one’s own process of At-OneMent through Attunement to the Universe.

Big Beautiful Yoga - Tracy Herold Big Beautiful Yoga is, at its core, Yoga for every body. My goal is to remove the intimidation of the “pretzel” factor of Hatha Yoga and to add, in it’s place, empathy and knowledge to get everyone on their path to physical wellness; to eliminate the self talk about what you think your body can’t do and grow a sense of self-awareness of what it CAN do with love, nourishment and the occasional adjustment. Being bigger does not mean being incapable of doing Yoga, it just means we look at doing Yoga with a different perspective.

Come talk about investigations, evidence reviewing, debunking and how things are faked on paranormal investigations/haunting claims. See what it takes to do an investigation and what some people do to fake their evidence. Bring your own evidence and we’ll review it for you.

Possibly the oldest, but most certainly the most well known, the Highland Fling is the epitome of traditional Scottish dancing. Historically, the Fling is a dance of valor and victory over one’s enemies. In lore, it is a dance of a young man so excited at seeing a stag deer, all the can do is jump frenetically. Currently, it is the dance all Highland Dancers are judged by. It is a highly athletic dance comprised of jumping and being fleet of foot…Come share in a bit of Scottish Culture!! NOTE: ALL are welcome (bring the kids!!), but as this dance is nothing but jumping on one leg, it is advised to be aware of your own abilities and to come and do what you can!

Male Mysteries “Where did they go?” Lord Uthyr What *are* Men’s Mysteries in today’s work-a-day world? Where have the rites of passage and manhood gone within our society? What can we do to find those once-heroic Archetypes in our own every day male experience and let them guide us to being better men? Wicca and Paganism are often characterized in the mainstream literature as ‘feminist spirituality’ and it is

quite common for women to be spiritual leaders in the pagan community. Informal surveys indicate that there are many more women in paganism than men, and that many male pagans are gay. Most Sects of Pagansim revere and honor the Goddess above the God and many discount the male aspects of deity. Uthyr SpiritBear will lead a roundtable discussion on what it means to be male and Pagan, the nature of pagan manhood, and the rites and transitions appropriate to men in Paganism and Wicca. These and other questions are addressed in this workshop with Lord Uthyr Spiritbear.

Pagans Working with Media Rev Don Lewis

Modern Druids, Witches and ADF Amber SkySpirit

This presentation discusses strategies for successfully interacting with media and how to deal with reporters and other media personnel in order to get the most positive presentation.

This is about how it all comes together. No longer is Neopaganism current terminology. Forty years ago when people started exploring Paganism and it’s many paths it was new. In our current times, our paths and systems of belief are not so separately defined. Knowledge is of value in all its forms if its beneficial. In ADF, all Indo-European spiritual cultures are considered worthy of wisdom-sharing to enrich our rites, connections with spirituality, and most importantly our existence and search for happiness. I discuss how it all comes together under the ADF roof, and encourage discussion of how we can apply “Druid” philosophy in our own lives.

People Watching and Magical Implications - Alex Gonzalez The skill of observation of people is one not many people decide on their own to hone. However, it is invaluable when one is a magickal sort of person. Just a little observation can save us time and trouble in communications, understanding and effective working with others, from purposes mundane to magickal. In this course, Lord “Alex” Foal will show us how to observe more closely the levels of expression humans truly give one another in everyday conversation and how a little more awareness and applied knowledge on our part can effectively increase our ability to understand and work with others every day, no matter the circumstances.

Through discussion and hands-on practice, this workshop explores a number of skills that will help new and experienced ritualists craft stronger rituals. We’ll work with common pitfalls, ritual structure and flow, logistics, inclusivity, participation, authenticity, public speaking and performance skills, trance and ecstatic techniques, and building energy through chanting, movement, rhythm, and connection. Sticky, Shiny, Sacred - Kathy Nance In the Anderson Feri Tradition works with the soul as a trinity--Sticky One, Shining Body, and Sacred Dove/Godsoul--and believes that when these parts are aligned, we can ask for and receive anything. Each part of the soul has a role in magickal workings and becoming a truly integrated, effective human being. Learn the origins of this spiritual philosophy and engage each soul part through playful movements leading to alignment. (No dance experience is required. Movements can easily be modified for those with physical challenges.) Special Requirements for Workshop/Ritual: Please bring water to drink.

Tapping Into Eternity; Exploring Vibrational Consciousness Through Rhythm We will explore how our perception has everything to do with our experience on this physical plane and that this is only a small portion of what really exists. Through drumming, chanting and other music we can raise our vibration to have a broader view of our reality. This program is designed to help us awaken and to stop limiting ourselves. We will look at how it can assist us in having clairvoyance or “clear vision” of what is beyond the “veil” or illusion. Ultimately this will help us to bring peace to ourselves, our communities and our planet. You don’t have to be a drummer to participate but if you have a drum, please bring it!

SPECIAL GUESTS Stephanie Kusmer Stephanie K. Kusmer, Vibrational Awareness Facilitator - Earth Rhythms Healing. I facilitate Guided Drum Meditations, Group and Community Drum Circles and Workshops on Raising Personal Vibration. I also do Residential Interior Design at Total Interior Designs, Inc. I am a believer that we create our own reality. If each of us can heal our wounds and understand that there is no time but now we can turn our “world” into a balanced and sustainable place to live. Love for self = love for the planet= love for the life force energy and the divine connection. Vibratory awareness is how healing manifests. Through drumming we can bring community together for a higher dialogue to help the greater all. I consider myself a time witch. Rhythm is the key to life and all skills and talents stem from balanced rhythm. I don’t like to restrict my being by labeling myself but some of the things I enjoy are bringing people together to play music particularly drumming. I also enjoy the art of making change through will also known as “Magick”. In addition, one of my great passions is visual beauty and the Chi of energy flow and I manifest this through creating beautiful interiors at Total Interior Designs, Inc.

Taz Chance Rev. Lady Storm, known locally in the community as Taz, has been a life-long member of the Pagan community and has been active in the craft since childhood. Her grandmather was a touch healer and psychic, her mother was a medium and most of the woman in her family line have one or more of the “gifts” of the craft. Taz has practiced in and studied many different craft traditions, along with Native American studies from her family. She has received mutliple initiations in various traditional paths. She is currently the HPS of Luna Espiral Coven, sits on the board of several local Pagan groups, teaches classes and often acts as a consultant on craft education, ritual preperation and leadership in the local community. She has worked to promote tolerance, acceptance and education across boundries. Taz received dual degrees in Cultural History and Secondary Educaiton from Columbia College in 2001, and has been a graduate student at Southwestern Missouri State University for her MA in ESL. A master of the craft, she has been practicing magick for well over twenty years Her favorite topics include “”finding the God/Goddess within”, “Tarot”, “Tolerance in an Integrated Community,” ”Paganism and Ethics, “Magick Really is Based in Science,” and “personal empowerment”.

Tish Hunt Tish aka Feline is currently practicing as a solitary practitioner in the Isian genre of Wiccan. She has spent time in a coven and has had her turn as a HPS. She currently belly dances with Lotus Arts studio in Belleville. She enjoys taking care of her dogs, reading, drumming, essential oils and herbology.

Tracy Herold Tracy is a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness and Boot Camp instructor who is currently studying her way into a 200-RYT for Yoga (Teacher Training) and also into the British Association for Teachers of Dance (BATD) as a Highland Dance Instructor. She comes from a fitness past of Middle Eastern Dance, Highland Dance, Yoga, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts. Her focus has begun to shift into the “Healthy At Every Size” mentality after seeing how some of her bigger sisters were marginalized in group fitness and society at large. Ouroboros with a twist in the middle. The Ouroboros has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist's opus. My role remained focused on Site and what we would now call “Operations”. Attendance was estimated to be around 2300 - certainly the largest turnout yet. In 2001, I moved into the lead coordinator role and really began to understand all the layers of that responsibility. The 9th Picnic had as a theme – The Circle Begins Anew – A nod to the new century and how it seemed like a new era was dawning for pagans and their relationship with the greater community of St. Louis. That year I wrote the following as part of a History of the Picnic in the program book: “The challenges of putting on Picnic have grown and with it so has CAST. We believe that in this event, we have created a great resource for our local Pagan community of friends, seekers and teachers. The realizing of this dream happens only by the drive and service of those who have volunteered time and energy to it. Enjoy this year’s Pagan Picnic and consider helping out with a donation or, even better, by joining the team next year for continuing this growing tradition of education, outreach and fellowship.” I believe in this sentiment now more than ever and I know it applies to the present group of great people who are continuing to make Pagan Picnic a reality. The 10th anniversary Picnic in 2002 was a bit special and came at a challenging time for our country and society as we had vivid memories of the airplane attacks of September 11, 2001. The theme – May Every God/dess Bless America, sent two messages: one of patriotism and one of a bigger view of deity than is commonly found in the USA. The T-shirt, designed by Mickey Mueller, with a waving flag resembling the American flag with various pagan faith symbols replacing the stars, is my favorite Picnic shirt. I remained the lead coordinator this year. Attendance seemed to stabilize at around 2300. Rituals this year had strong themes of remembrance and honoring those who serve to keep us safe and protected. Getting back to our roots was the idea behind the theme for the 11th Picnic in 2003 – Gimme that Old-Time Religion. Once more I held the role of Poobah as we continued striving to maintain an excellent Picnic in service to our community. Attendance remained about the same, somewhere between 2000 and 2500. The team continued to change slowly and the Picnic continued to be the highlight of the pagan summer events in St. Louis. In 2004, I took a step back and the new lead coordinator for the 12th Picnic was Kim Chang. Kim had been the key site and set-up coordinator in the three years I was in the Poobah role. The theme was – Discovering Spiritual Frontiers. Scheduling issues with Tower Grove Park caused the Picnic to relocate back to the West End of the park to the area around the Oval near the entrance to Kingshighway. I think the experience there helped us see why we liked the East End site so well. For instance, we set up a large tent for Bardic Circle instead of the traditional pavilion that we use in the East end. Attendance was off a bit this year and change was in the wind in other ways that we did not anticipate. In the fall of 2004 CAST experienced some significant financial challenges. By early 2005 it was clear that CAST could not sustain Pagan Picnic and a new sponsor would be needed if Picnic were to continue. CAST dissolved in early 2005. Many of CAST’s activities were picked up by other organizations such as SIPA and Four Winds Fellowship. And so the wheel turns. The solution for Pagan Picnic was generously and courageously offered up by Yarrow Coven under the renewed leadership of the Father and Mother of the Picnic, Elbee and Cheryl Brown. The members of Yarrow offered funds and support for the 13th picnic but more was needed than was available. Omnistic Fellowship did have some funds remaining from previous events and collaboration with CAST during the earlier years of Pagan Picnic. OF gave its remaining assets to Yarrow to help make continuation

of the Picnic possible. In addition, many of the former members of CAST stepped up as key volunteers to help keep this dream alive and to continue to serve this community. Even though the budget was tight, Yarrow pulled it off and delivered a great event to the pagan community in June of 2005. The theme chosen was – Unity Through Diversity. The location was back in the East End of the park. Several new innovations were added like pony rides, participation by the League of Northern Indian Nations, the Frisbee Dogs from Purina Farms and attendance by a great many animal rescue groups. I am sure that most of those attending did not know of the great challenges that the Picnic team had overcome to bring this special Picnic into being. The “relay baton” of the Picnic was once more in Yarrow’s hands. Pagan Picnic #14 in 2006 was quite a bit more business as usual compared to 2005. Yarrow remained the sponsor, Elbee continued as Poobah and the Picnic went fairly smoothly. Coming of Age was the theme. Attendance was up to around 2300 again and most of the now traditional aspects of Picnic were in place – Bardic Circle, the food drive, vendors, workshops, rituals and lots of fun by the community. Time for another challenging year! In 2007, the 15th Picnic almost didn’t happen. The park raised its fees beyond what we were able to pay. Yarrow put out a plea to the Community for donations and the Community responded with gusto. Donations large and small flooded in from people who wanted to pay back some of what they say they received over the years. It was truly a common community effort that saved the Picnic. Another example of the whole community pulling together was that the vendors did not desert this event when we were forced to substantially raise the vending fees to cover the cost of future Picnics. The Pagan Picnic this year was bigger than ever and still growing. Elbee remained the lead coordinator; the theme was a whimsical one – Barefoot in the Park. The 16th annual Picnic of 2008 saw the Picnic on solid ground again. Elbee ran the show once more with Magic is Afoot for a theme. Around 2500 attended. Finally, there was room to breathe and Yarrow Coven started talking about handing the event off to another group. Several groups were approached but few had the resources or manpower to commit. The Picnic was truly a community event and it was decided that an independent corporation consisting of people from the community would be the best option to shepherd the Picnic in the coming years. So planning began for what would become the new sponsoring organization. The program book for the 16th Picnic set a new high standard for information, beauty and convenience. An electronic representation of that whole book, and for each following year, is available on the Picnic website and I quite enjoy paging through it to see who was doing what and be reminded of the great variety and talent that present in our community. The last Picnic Yarrow Coven sponsored was in 2009 - the 17th. The theme that year was – Celebrating Life – and that was exactly what we did. We had a great musical group who were on their way to Pagan Spirit Gathering and stopped in St. Louis to perform a free concert Saturday night. Coyote Run delighted us and set a mood that would carry through Sunday and beyond for those of us who were leaving later that day for PSG. For the five years Yarrow Coven were the stewards of the Picnic, there was a steady growth in attendance. More and more people were searching for their spirituality and finding it in the fellowship of the Picnic. And it was time again to pass that baton. St. Louis Pagan Events, Inc. had formed and was ready to take on the responsibility for Pagan Picnic in 2010. Even with the group

being new, Elbee remained the lead coordinator to help support the transition. The 18th Picnic was centered on the theme – Connecting to One. Attendance continued to increase to nearly 2600, the most ever. In 2011, Elbee finally was relieved as lead coordinator by Gyndee Powers. By this time Elbee had more than earned his second retirement from the Poobah role, and while remaining very active, the new leader of the team was Gyndee. The theme was Everyday Enchantments. Attendance went up again to an estimated 3000 attendees for the 19th Picnic! The picnic team did a fine job last year and set their sights on having a really special version of the Picnic to mark the milestone of the 20th anniversary in 2012. So here you are. Here we are at the 20th Picnic. You and we are part of the reality of it and are creating the future legacy of it for those who will come after us. We stand on the shoulders of all the volunteers that worked so hard through the years. No pay. Only offering service and wishing to enrich our community. So I urge three things of you – appreciate all those from Yarrow, CAST, OF, and St. Louis Pagan Events whose work makes this day possible and thank those responsible for all they do every chance you get, consider how you can support Picnic (donate money, donate time as a volunteer, spread the word, shop at the vendors, buy CDs from the musicians, and just attend), and finally, consider responding to the invitations to share your Picnic experiences on film or in writing (see the Info Booth for more specifics on the options to add to our record of the Picnic). THANK YOU for being part of our community!
