LIVE AND LEARN
College was especially sweet because of the positive, hopeful atmosphere of a college campus.”
– Jerry Kramer, Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee
Colleges and universities are places where the continuum of the past meets the ideas and hopes for the future. The physical campus can reflect this—historic buildings and landscapes side-by-side with newly constructed state-of-the-art facilities and outdoor space. This diversity of design chronicles how the university has changed over the decades and, sometimes, centuries. Campus architects often rehabilitate and repurpose historic structures to serve contemporary uses, retaining the memories and histories while creating modern spaces that serve the needs of today’s students.
Page & Turnbull understands how to assess, analyze, and reposition historic assets to accommodate ever-changing pedagogy and social dynamics. We know that your campus’s individual historic buildings and landscapes are at the very core of what makes it unique:
Your campus is your superpower.
From classrooms to communal spaces, performing arts venues to physics labs, our architects, planners, and cultural resource specialists are ready to work with you make sure that your historic buildings are the foundation for your future.
FIRM PROFILE
PAGE & TURNBULL imagines change in historic and contemporary environments to cultivate thriving, sustainable, and resilient communities. Our mission is to understand the past and apply its lessons to revitalize existing and historic buildings and places for the benefit of current and future users. For 50 years, we have led architecture, preservation, and planning projects for civic, cultural, educational, and commercial clients. Our work has impacted some of California’s most significant buildings and, more importantly, has made a difference in people’s lives.
For our staff of architects, architectural historians, cultural resource planners, and materials specialists, preservation and adaptive reuse are about valuing a community’s stories and envisioning a better and more sustainable future.
ARCHITECTURE & HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE We work as architect of record, design architect, preservation architect, and preservation consultant, collaborating with engineers and specialty disciplines, to re-envision existing and historic buildings, integrate modern systems, and design contemporary interventions.
CULTURAL RESOURCE PLANNING
Architectural historians and cultural resources planners evaluate historic resources including individual buildings, landscapes, and entire communities, to assess their historic integrity. The studio is proficient in authoring a wide range of reports, developing and implementing mitigation measures, and completing National Register and California Register documentation.
PRESERVATION & MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY Materials specialists conduct conditions surveys, materials analyses and testing, sequential dating, and other investigative processes to understand historic building methods and materials. This knowledge is key to developing effective preservation and adaptive reuse strategies that respect the original design and materials of a building while ensuring that it meets the needs of modern users.

POWELL LIBRARY
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES
Preparing for the Next Century
In 1951, Ray Bradbury wrote an early draft of Fahrenheit 451 at Powell Library. The 162,000 SF building (1927) is one of the first structures to be built on UCLA’s Westwood Campus. It is comprised of two connected structures: the 120,000 SF main building, and a 1947 addition. As preservation architects on an MRY-led team, our role is to ensure that the work at Powell conforms to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards while the building undergoes a seismic retrofit.
Phase 1 of the project focuses on the main building by tying together the upper wall and roof structure of the west and east portions of the main reading room across the central domed cupola. Sections of the panelized Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG) decorative ceiling will be removed, and the structural reinforcing installed above the ceiling before the panels are reinstalled.

ROBLE HALL
STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Improvements in a Historic Dormitory
Page & Turnbull was the architect for Phases II and III of the rehabilitation of Roble Hall, Stanford’s oldest and largest student housing facility designed by George Kelham. We implemented a lengthy set of program requirements, including improvements to life safety, accessibility, and egress; structural and seismic upgrades, new code-compliant and energy-efficient building systems, refurbishment of all public spaces, student rooms, and restrooms; and a new site design surrounding the building. The schedule was challenging since most Phases II and III work occurred in one 12-week period, when a portion of the building was occupied.

THE KNOLL
STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Hitting the Right Note
Originally built as the residence of the university president, The Knoll is now the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics.
Page & Turnbull, as preservation architect, led the restoration of the Knoll’s historically significant exterior elements and interior spaces including cast stone exterior, arched double doors and windows, concrete balconies, and unique cast iron railings. On the interior, we rehabilitated major public spaces including the grand stair, banquet room, assembly room, and lobbies. A unique aspect of this project was the replacement of eight large chimneys that were removed after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
“Concerts in the renovated Knoll, its historical architectural qualities, and the side-by-side interplay of art and technology are an exciting mix for the future.”

SATHER TOWER
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
Time Takes a Toll
Familiarly known as The Campanile because it was modeled after the tower that anchors Piazza San Marco in Venice, Sather Tower is one of UCB’s most iconic landmarks. A National Historic Landmark, Sather is constructed of steel and concrete and clad in white marble.
Page & Turnbull was Materials Conservation specialists. Our work included removing previous non-compatible repairs, and repairing and cleaning the white marble clad and ninefoot-tall bronze lantern. Repair solutions were required to have a 50-year life span under harsh conditions with minimal maintenance.
The project required intensive collaboration with structural and waterproofing specialists, rigid coordination due to limited access, and stringent time constraints.

TOWER HALL
SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY
Restoring an Icon at California’s Oldest Public University
Tower Hall, the main central administration building for San Jose State University, is the oldest building on the campus of the California’s oldest public university.
Page & Turnbull was architect and preservation architect for the restoration of Tower Hall, designated as a U.S. Historic District and a California Historical Landmark. Our scope included restoring the building’s brick exterior and stone and wood window, waterproofing, and renovating the roof, skylight, and exterior lighting. On the interior, we reviewed proposed renovation—including upgrades of fire and life safety systems, and construction of a new elevator and public restrooms to improve accessibility—to comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.

PRITZKER HALL
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES
Mid-Century for the Next Century
Page & Turnbull served as both on-call preservation consultant to UCLA and preservation consultant on the project team for the rehabilitation of Pritzker Hall. Originally named Franz Hall, we completed a historic resource evaluation of the eight-story tower, hoe of the Psychology Department, finding it eligible for listing in the National and California registers.
For the subsequent seismic retrofit and lobby improvement project, Page & Turnbull served as the preservation design consultant to ensure the project was compatible with the building’s historic character and that it retained its historic status. Pritzker Hall is targeted for LEED Platinum certification.
“What makes Pritzker historic and distinct are its height, highly modular design, and lack of a brick façade,” says Lesak. “That speaks to the broader patterns of history, the expansion of the UCLA system, and the growing psychology department, all highlighted in a decidedly different architectural style being used on campus.”

The former Berkeley Museum of Art building—one of the Bay Area’s finest examples of Brutalist architecture—now serves as the home of The Bakar BioEnginuity Hub. Bakar brings together UC researchers and students with life-sciences startups, by providing spaces for interaction and research.
As preservation consultant, Page & Turnbull documented the building’s historically important spaces and consulted on their repurposing, namely the skylit spaces that was formerly a gallery and now used as a state of the art incubator for lifescience startups.

Medical Arts Deco
Page & Turnbull served as the preservation architect for the adaptive re-use of the Old Palo Alto Hospital, now a state-ofthe-art medical office building.
Our work focused on documenting and developing specifications for repair of the exterior envelope including terra cotta tile wall panels, original paint colors, cast stone, board formed concrete, wood windows, copper clad entry canopy, historic light fixtures, and the replacement tile at the pyramidal roof. We discovered that the concrete aggregate, used in the 1939 addition, was contaminated and we developed an economical and aesthetically appropriate repair solution.

Concrete Repairs that Retained the Original Finish
Built in the 1960s, the aggregate-surfaced, pre-cast concrete cladding of Steele Laboratory was distinctive but deteriorating. Page & Turnbull investigated and documented the building’s conditions, analyze the causes of deterioration, and provide recommendations to repair the deteriorated precast concrete.
Following field surveys, consultation with engineers and concrete restoration contractors, and materials testing experiments, we design innovative solutions that would remedy the deterioration and retain the exposed aggregate finish an aesthetically important feature of the building. We prepared an illustrated report that proposed a series of low-cost repair options instead of wholesale replacement of the deteriorated units.

LONG RANGE DEVELOPMENT PLAN
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
Growth Opportunities
Page & Turnbull provided support for the UCB Long Range Development Plan and campus master plan for the University of California at Berkeley. The process identified opportunities to actualize UC Berkeley’s new strategic plan, assess existing campus conditions, review capital needs and investments, and provide a guide for future development of the Campus Park, Adjacent Blocks, Clark Kerr Campus, Smyth Fernwald property, Hill Campus, and other outlying parcels over a 10-20 year timeframe.
UC Berkeley’s properties on and off campus include more than two dozen buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as many individual historic resources and districts listed at the state and local levels. For six buildings and three landscape areas on the main campus, Page & Turnbull evaluated the historic significance, which included a summary of the campus’s historic context and eras of development, analyses of the buildings and landscapes, and a discussion of best practices for campus preservation planning.
