Early Childhood Education

Designing brighter futures, inspiring young minds. According to the Center for American Progress, nearly one in four American children under the age of five years participates in some form of organized childcare* such as daycare centers. Corporate daycare is a significant business industry and growing rapidly with companies that specialize in facilitating the design and operations of onsite corporate daycare centers. Statistics show that employers who offer this benefit experience measured increases in employee retention and satisfaction. They also see a decrease in absenteeism. Recognizing the significance of this effect on the American workforce has increased client emphasis on design of daycare facilities. In 2014, Page began working with one the largest national providers of employer-sponsored child care, Bright Horizons. After a series of successful on-site corporate child care projects for local Fortune 500 companies, it was clear that Bright Horizons’s mission to provide high-quality child care meshed perfectly with Page’s talent in creating inspired spaces that not only met the needs of the client, but also surpassed the expectations of the user group. What is critical in designing environments for children is the understanding that a child’s environment is part of the curriculum. While an adult can change their workspace to be more comfortable and productive, a child cannot and must live within the bounds that are created for them. Therefore, as architects, our mission in envisioning and executing spaces for children is paramount.

Confidential Energy Client Corporate Campus Child Development Center Spring, Texas The first phase of this 20,000 sf child development center includes eight classrooms, administrative support spaces, central kitchen, a library, and an STEM/art room. The classroom modules step back along the slender curving site to define private courtyards directly accessible from each classroom. When demand justifies expansion, the client can build eight additional classrooms without disrupting operations of the existing facility thanks to the strategic layout. The second phase will expand the center to 31,000-square feet and accommodate a total of 254 children. The site’s long and narrow proportions were the driving force behind the slender stepped plan and the phased construction strategy. Ochsner Health System Child Care Center New Orleans, Louisiana Ocshner Health New Orleans commissioned the Page team to design a facility to accommodate 218 children on a tight site across a busy thoroughfare from the main hospital campus. Although the center serves the hospital employee population, the client sought to create a center that fostered a sense of community within the existing industrial/urban neighborhood in which it is located. The design makes clever use of the corner lot and buffers the outdoor play areas and classrooms from the public way with lush landscaping and a strategic layout, while maintaining a welcoming presense on the public street. The center contains a multi-purpose STEAM lab at the intersection of both wings of the building to create an easily accesible space that is the focal point as you walk along the ample corridors and distinct classroom entries. Magnolia Montessori For All Austin, Texas In keeping with the spirit of Montessori education, the Magnolia Montessori For All campus is comprised of a village of fifteen residential-scaled buildings situated around landscaped courtyards and immersed in nature. The single story Administration and adjoining Headquarters buildings form the school’s main entry. The school is organized around a main circulation path which acts as a Main Street for the Village that gently ramps down throughout the campus. Each age group has their own cluster of houses within the Village and each cluster is arranged around a dedicated outdoor space. As the children get older their dedicated courtyard spaces become more open and allow a greater degree of flexibility, freedom, and independence. The youngest children on campus, the Infants and Toddlers, have their own specialized learning environments designed specifically to their unique scale and developmental needs. Their back porches open up to a generous tree-filled play area. Project Size 40,000 Square Feet Services Provided Architecture / Engineering / Interior Design / Programming / Master Planning

The Learning Academy at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital Marietta, Georgia Utilizing a narrow sloping lot on the campus of the WellStar Healthcare System north of Atlanta, GA, the design team was tasked with envisioning a new employee sponsored child care center. The challenges of providing various secure points of entry, (17) welcoming classrooms, and imaginative play spaces - all over multiple levels would ultimately become design opportunities. Taking cues from the surrounding residential neighborhood, the team was careful to present the neighborhood with a respectful solution. The resulting street façade is modest in scale and pulls from the colors and textures of surrounding buildings. From behind an unfolding wood like screen wall emerges an exterior playground stair that connects three levels of play and activates the façade with the blur of children in motion. The punched windows, colorful playscape, and generous landscaping were welcomed by the community. The focal point of interior is the Lobby Reading Stair with terraced seating for classroom gatherings or small reading groups. The lobby volume is brightly lit and surrounded by an expanse of curtainwall. The ceiling is an expression of the roof form that continues into an indoor play room with a climbing wall and ballet bars. Classrooms also have abundant natural light and expansive views to the exterior. Coupling classrooms with shared support spaces provides an efficient layout and allows optimal visibility for teachers. Throughout the project, the design team selected a neutral color palette with periodic colorful accents for finishes and furniture. The neutral palette allows the children’s artwork, toys and materials to color the space. The playground is equipped with embankment slides, sensory responsive play structures, musical instruments, sand, and natural materials like hand hewn cedar tree trunks and water. Shading utilized trees, solar sails, and the building itself, especially for an infant play area, with complete building cover. Project Size 32,200 Square Feet 2-Story

PLANNING / URBAN DESIGN We help our clients evolve, grow, and prosper because our process is informed by research, cutting-edge technology tools, and an appreciation for the unique culture of the people, organizations, and places we serve. Our interdisciplinary team of master planners, urban designers, architects, landscape architects, and programmers are dedicated to supporting the ongoing evolution of our urban areas, encouraging appropriate development and redevelopment suited to the particular conditions of each site we aim to transform. LAB PLANNING / DESIGN Page specializes in challenging projects for demanding clients throughout the globe. Laboratory facilities are among the most intricate and complex projects. The unique challenges posed by highly toxic petrochemical corrosion labs, sterile environments for pharmaceutical manufacturing, biohazard high-containment suites, precise environmental control of animal laboratories are commonplace obstacles overcome by our dedicated technical team of architects and engineers every day. Page has specialists equipped with a thorough understanding of the safety standards and scientific equipment requirements foundational to the success of all laboratories.

BRANDING & GRAPHICS Our visual identity and experiential designers create brand identities and graphic designs that support how places and environments are experienced. The orchestration of 2-dimensional design work including typography, color, imagery, form, technology and, especially, content, forms this basis. Examples of this work include wayfinding systems, architectural graphics, signage, exhibit design, retail design, and themed or branded spaces. We operate at the intersection of communications and the built environment. We provide architectural and placemaking visioning, and create overall design vocabularies that help clients hone in on the possibilities, character and nature of a project.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION / MODERNIZATION Page’s historic preservation and modernization service begins by asking the question: “What can be done to help this building perform at its highest level?”. Our integrated modernization approach unlocks the potential of existing buildings. Furthermore, historic preservation and modernization adapts spaces to support changes in the industry in buildings such as Courthouses, Historic Buildings, Hospitals, Government Buildings, and National Park Facilities, making them more efficient and sustainable, all while respecting the building’s history.
