2018 NEW SLE Program

PAGODA [ 회사 이름 입력 ] 2018-01-01

New SLE Program 2018 Pagoda has decided to introduce a new book series for our SLE Main Program for 2018 which has been trialled throughout the branches in October/November 2017. It was decided not to completely update the current book series and levels for the following reasons: 1. The number of levels currently offered is to be reduced in line with the number of students we have in the program. So SLE Main will go from 9 levels to 5. Old Levels & Description SLE 1+2 SLE 3+4 SLE 5+6 SLE 7+8 Current Events

New Levels & Description SLE Elementary SLE Pre-intermediate SLE Intermediate No change Upper Intermediate No change. Advanced

2. Each level will be three months long and involve a single book for each level so students will actually spend about the same amount of time in the program as now without the need to buy new books as soon as now. 3. Writing new books takes a huge amount of time and expense and with so many good books on the international market it makes sense to use them. SpeakOut is a multimedia book series with regular updates as well as using original media content. This means we can re-launch SLE as a blended learning course using Pearson’s books and their online content without delay. 4. E-Platform: Pearson have created a very comprehensive online resource that students can access for extra practice in language and videos. Teachers can also access these resources and use them in the classes. 5. A well-respected name: Both Pearson and the BBC are world leaders in content and creativity and to associate the SLE program with these can only be beneficial to students, teachers and Pagoda.

Features of the SpeakOut Series  Made in association with BBC Worldwide and BBC Learning English original content is used in each unit including news, documentary, drama and comedy which allow students to hear real spoken language in many formats and contexts.  A 10-12 unit textbook that focuses on speaking, functional English, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and listening/viewing. Each book comes with a DVD Rom and Audio.

 MyEnglishLab online resource site for students and teachers.  Teacher’s Book with Resource and Assessment Disc as well as extra language practice worksheets and ideas for the classroom.  A clearer distinction between levels and the achievement of completing a book, completing a level.

Features of the new SLE Main program.  Students will spend longer in each level but will automatically move up once the level is completed.  Placement testing will theoretically be easier as there will be fewer levels to place students in and named levels will be more flexible than numbered levels.  All teachers will have access to tablets or laptops in dedicated SLE Main classrooms to be able to utilize all the features of the book/online.  The central focus is still on speaking but there is a higher focus on grammatical practice and functional language than in the current program. Teachers will have flexibility to choose what activities work best for their students rather than try to cover everything.  There is more material per month than currently so teachers can really focus what each class needs without having to make much supplementary material.

A Typical Unit (one unit per week/4 units split over 20 hours of class time) Lesson One:  Interview Video, Language Study, Discussion. 1. Preview the video so you are aware of the questions – write number one on the board and have students discuss it before playing the video and discussing the different ways people answered – right some examples on the board. 2. Play the rest of the questions looking again at the language use and have students in pairs ask and answer the questions with as much detail as possible. 3. Have main topic on the board along with key vocabulary for the day and select which activities from 1.1 will be done with a high focus on speaking, language and pronunciation Lesson Two:

Vocabulary, Reading and Speaking

1. Introduce the new language and review from previous lesson 1.2. Spend as much time as possible on the speaking activities. 2. Language Practice and Listening activities on 1.3. 3. Supplement from online or teacher’s edition as necessary.

Lesson Three 

Video Content Lesson, Speaking, Review 1.4

1. Preview the video and introduce the content to the students (Cultural understanding) 2. Work through the DVD activities always remembering to focus on speaking and language use in the video. Supplement from online if necessary. 3. Change the writing activity into a speaking one as the main activity. Review as necessary.

Everyday classes will aim to complete a unit over 4/5 classes. Level Syllabi Elementary Month

Use of Technology  SLE Main classrooms will be allocated in each branch with other types of class in other classrooms.  Each SLE Main classroom will have the following equipment: 1. Speakers –either wall-mounted or computer style will be available.

2. Gender/adapters for laptops, tablets for easy connections. 3. Projectors/TV fixed in all large classrooms/mobile projectors for smaller classrooms – laptops will be of acceptable size in some smaller classrooms. 4. Galaxy tabs for teachers without laptops. In smaller classrooms these are loud enough to play the video/audio without speakers. 5. All audio/video can be played directly from the dropbox but can also be downloaded if necessary. All worksheets are also available in the same folder.  You are not expected to play all the listening files included in the units as there are probably more than you could conceivably use in the time that you have.

Supplementing Speaking  As we are using an outside book series the focus of the book is going to be different to what SLE teachers and students are used to.  A common complaint (on comparison) is that there are fewer obvious speaking activities than in the current SLE program (conversely a complaint of the current books is too much emphasis on speaking)  Speaking supplements will be provided for the unit but teachers should plan how to adapt activities to ensure maximum speaking time. This can be done by adding discussion questions to the video and reading texts and adapting written activities into group speaking activities.

Weekend SLE 

There will be no schedule changes to the weekend programs.

The compact editions would no longer be used and will replaced with the new SpeakOut series although in a slightly different leveling to the weekday classes.

One Unit would probably be easily covered in two weeks and there is enough supplementary material if necessary on the dropbox.
