August 14, 2015 Grand Lake Montessori welcomes you to our 26th annual production. We deeply appreciate all the parents, teachers, family and friends who have contributed their time and energy to this show. We could not create this magic without you. The cast is composed entirely of children from all over the Bay Area. Their absorbent minds, and enthusiastic efforts allow them to learn the entire opera with all of the songs, dances and stage direction, in just 10 days. The amazing results of their immersion study are shown here tonight in this single performance. It is our hope that this experience will give your child a lifelong love of theatre. Sincerely,

Helen Campbell

Head of School Grand Lake Montessori

SYNOPSIS Act 1 - The Great Cave - The animals of the arctic live in unity and balance. The Inuit legend tells us that every year all the animals would gather at the great cave, remove their skins and join in a dance. Reminding all that underneath they are all one. One day man enters the cave and laughs at the dancing animals, embarrassing them. No more do the animals gather, no more do they see themselves as one. Act 2 - The Village - In the village the man has become the great hunter, dominating all the animal

world, but reminded that he is cursed. His only child Suinnak is deaf, unable to hear his story, unable to contribute to the good of the village, unable to pass his story on. The village elder Tupilek tells Father that he must find a way to teach Suinnak to be a valued village member, he must have something to contribute. Suinnak realizes his lack of any contribution and feels the teasing of the other children. He is consoled by his only friend Tikaani who sees that although Suinnak cannot hear, he has great understanding through what he observes.

Act 3 - The Hunters and the Storm - Father decides to take Suinnak on a walrus hunt and teach

Suinnak how to hunt the most prized prey. Encountering a fierce storm Suinnak is separated from the hunting party and lost. The hunters search for Suinnak but to no avail. They follow tracks and discover Suinnak has been followed by a polar bear, a fox and a pack of wolves. Unable to follow anymore they assume Suinnak is no more. Dejected they return to the village. No walrus, and no Suinnak.

Act 4 - The Hunters Return to the Village - The hunters return and tell their story of how Suinnak has been lost. The village in great grief mourns the loss. Tikaani seeks to tell the village that there still is hope because Suinnak has great understanding of the animal world and skills that could support him. Tikaani devises a plan wherein the villagers sing their song and dance their eagle dance in the hopes that Suinnak will be able to see their songs in the Northern lights and find his way home. Act 5 - Suinnak Returns - Suinnak returns with the help of the animals he encounters on the way. Returning his wisdom to the village that although we are all different we are all one animal, one family.
