DIFFERENT STRINGS
This month’s Different Strings features a Harp Guitar by Mike Doolin of Doolin Guitars for guitarist Muriel
Anderson. Mike has this to say:
“This is the second harp guitar I’ve built for Muriel Anderson. The first one had sub-basses only and a 21.52” scale tuned G-G. After playing that one for a few years she decided she was ready to take on super-trebles, and that she wanted a slightly lower tuning, so this one has a 22.8” scale tuned F#-F#. Other than that the two instruments are very similar, with 9-fan bracing and all the same woods. “The challenge of this instrument was to incorporate steel super-trebles without having to resort to heavy X-bracing. I got around that by running the supers all the way through the bridge to terminate at the back edge of the body, so the extra tension is borne by the body and not by the bridge.”
