It Ain’t Necessarily So Howard Emerson
Howard Emerson has been on the radar of most guitarists at some point in time. His signature sound, precise, flowing and solid is evident in this new CD, It Ain’t Necessarily So. There are 13 tracks, all high quality, showcasing his talents, all original except for 3. The lilting slow, folk/ bluesy title track is a perfect foil for his Flammang, all woody and smokey fundamentals. Emerson has never been about rapid, frantic delivery. His is a precise, flow, like a freight train, on a sure and steady track. “Hi Calliope” is very much in this vein; you sense the rhythm and focus immediately and soon, you’re hopping on board, enjoying the gentle, steady ride.

“Can’t Help Falling In Love” gets the Emerson treatment. This cover soothing, melancholy in its slow dance tempo. The tracks very rarely exceed 3 minutes, and like many of the best songs, they are compact but complete. The mix and recording is very immediate, very live sounding. A great recording from a guitarist who is comfortable and confident of his tone. Take the time to check it out!

Delayed
Adam Miller
There’s something happening down in Australia. Adam Miller’s brand of high tempo fingerstyle Jazz is infectious. Already Australian Fingerstyle Champion in 2002, Miller has been a regular on the Festival circuit and NAMM shows. Delayed is his fourth album, and is highly polished. Rapid fingerstrokes of his Traugottbuilt guitar are reproduced with crystal clarity, essential as the multilayered compositions dance off the strings at high tempo. There is groove, there is rhythm but most of all there is melody. Consider this a love child mix of Jerry Reed’s, Charlie Hunter and Bootsy Collins.
In many of the recording these days, there is danger, in particular with Jazzy/ Funk genres to fall into a formulaic trap. Miller has cleanly side stepped this with aplomb. Highlights are “The Sleazy Song”, all funky and bubbly, “Honeysucker” with polyphonic sensibilities and a slower, more bluesy “Last Kiss” reminds us of shades of Tommy Emmanuel. Adam Miller is what’s happen down in Australia.
