茶道 “Yukata”

Yukata Yukata is a light cotton robe, like a casual kimono, used in the summer season. The word “Yukata” comes from the word “yu” meaning “bath” and “katabira” means “under clothing”. The Japanese wear yukata most the time in the summer whether they are going to a fire festival, going to a temple, or going to a hot spring. The light cotton robe is particularly suitable for use in the hot weather, and it is not strange to find that a lot of the Japanese wear it in the summer.

Space Interior A room in a ryokan is usually a single large, undivided room floored with traditional tatami (rice-straw matting), with the only piece of furniture being a single low table. Doors are shoji (sliding screens), and decoration will usually be one or two simple ink brush drawings or scrolls. Seating in the room is on cushions, called zabuton, arranged around the low table. In the winter season, there may be a blanket around the table. You slip your feet under the blanket for the warmth of a kotatsu electrical heating unit.

Hot spring ( onsen ) Large common baths in the ryokan are used not just for cleansing but for relaxation as well, both mental and physical. Big windows typically look out over lush gardens or dramatic mountain or ocean views. Some public baths contain several different types of tubs, whether cypress or stone or cascading baths. Rotenburo, the open-air baths, allow you to bathe in the sunshine, breathing in the brisk, cool air.
