Sushi Grade Spicy Sal mon on a Bag uette Crisp
Crispy Salt and Lime Calamari
This week, Team Paperazzi headed over to Newbury Café in Karachi. What first strikes one about Newbury is its wonderful décor. Featuring shuttered windows, a gorgeous terrace perfect for outdoor seating in the upcoming winter months, as well as elegant indoor seating. The menu presents a wide variety of mains and mouthwateringly good tapas style starters that were most definitely the highlight of our visit. One must not deprive themselves of the great gastronomic experience here.

THE MARTIAL ARTIST IN CONVERSATION WITH SHAZ KHAN
34
PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE
2019
SHAZ KHAN HAS DECIDED TO GO BIG OR GO HOME WITH HIS UPCOMING FILM “THE MARTIAL ARTIST”. KHAN HAS HAD HIS ACTORS TRAINING AT THE CREDIBLE ACTORS STUDIO MFA PROGRAM AND IS WELL KNOWN FOR STARRING IN FILMS SUCH AS “MOOR” AND “PERVEZ HAI JUNOON”. STARRING AND PRODUCING IN THIS LARGE-SCALE INTERNATIONAL FILM, SHAZ WENT THROUGH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF TRAINING INSPIRED BY THE MMA TO SWITCH UP HIS AESTHETIC AND REALLY FIT THE ROLE. EMBRACING HIS CURIOSITY TOWARDS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, HE BRINGS THIS TRENDING THEME TO A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE AS A PAKISTANI LEAD. Is this is your first production. What’s it like transitioning from acting to production? This is not my first production. I have been producing and shooting things for a while now on a small scale. This IS the first time I have done it at this scale though so it’s definitely been a learning curve. As an Actor, at a very early stage, I knew that if I wanted to be satisfied I had to create the roles that I would want to play on screen and to do that I would have to learn how to write, direct and most importantly produce. Then it evolved to what type of stories need to be told and what is worthy of cinema. This is one I have to tell right now. You’ve become a producer very early on during your career. Why did you shift so early? I don’t see it as early. It’s all about the type of work you want to do and how you are going to do it. I follow my heart when it comes to the stories I want to tell and need to do whatever it takes to get them told. If that requires producing, so be it. What’s it like acting and producing at the same time for a project which is as demanding as this? Lots of coffee, walking and talking to yourself. Making a film is such a glorious and almost impossible task. There are joyous moments and there are painful moments as well, but like anything it’s finding the love with the day to day unfolding. To do that being extremely focused is the key and also understanding the preparation for playing a character, directing a film, and for producing a film all require different responsibilities. Journals and NOTES application on my phone have been my savior, because you have to learn to be properly organized which I am getting better at. You’re working alongside some of the biggest names, how does it feel? Humbled and can’t wait for them to shine.
I’m sure people would opt for smaller projects especially if it’s their first production. This is definitely something new within the Pakistani industry which translates to it being super challenging. Why did you opt for an international film as your first production project? I have never played it safe nor am I interested in that. I am curious about people from all walks of life. Thus, the Universal stories which you call international always appeal to me because I am always looking for the thread that binds us across the world. Simply put I want to create a mythology around Mixed Martial Arts world which has Desis as LEADS. What’s the biggest challenge you have faced so far as a producer? Besides the general uncertain nature of the film business and the fact no one has done a project like this. It’s the time zones believe it or not. Coordinating between U.S. Middle East and Pakistan with all the parties is a challenge we had to rise up to. Shaz you are already exposed to the international market, where do you think our industry stands today? Our industry is like a newborn presented with all sorts of possibilities. As long as we have the courage to keep swinging for the fences and create content from all genres, we will evolve to a mature industry.

1. Who is your best friend? I don’t have just one best friend, I have a group of best friends, we’ve grown up together & those are Sanam Taseer, Mashal Peerzada, Zehra Gilani, Merhbano Sethi, Ambreen & Kamiar Rokni. 2. What would you grab if your house was on fire? God, I’ll grab my husband, my kids & all my staff. I mean, I would first make sure everyone else is out safe and sound, including my dogs and then I’d make sure that I was ok. 3. What is your destination for the trip of your dreams? Honestly, I love being home. So the trip of my dream would be home, just relax, unwind, have friends over & have nothing to do, that for me is the fun thing in my head. 4. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up? And do you still want it? When I was 4 years old, I was asked what I want to be, I said actor I wanted to be Amitab Bachan. I have become what I wanted to be since I was a little girl, I never wanted to be Doctor, Engineer, Pilot etc. I always wanted to work as an actor that’s exactly what I’m doing right now. 5. If you got stuck in the elevator and was forced to listen to only one song, which would it be? Sound of silence, I absolutely love that song, 6. What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? Focus on your own work try to make yourself a good person and be the best version of yourself. Don’t try and compete with others and get stuck in comparisons. Focus on yourself in improving yourself, that’s the best advice anyone has ever given me.

ARIES (MAR. 21- APRIL 20) “Imagine all the people sharing all the world. You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will live as one.” Let this John Lennon classic inspire you to put your weapon down and see the good in everybody — enemies included. Adopt the philosophy ‘collaboration over competition’ to make place for peace and harmony in your existence. This will not only help you succeed, but also get to the finish line with ease. Forgiveness is also going to be a major theme for you, especially at the beginning. TAURUS (APR. 21- MAY 21) When you’ve made up your mind about something, no force in the world can come in your way. But could your passion be turning into an obsession? Something to think about this week, Taurus. Remember, what you do is not who you are. Don’t get so caught up in the matrix that you forget your sacred purpose. On the upside, the cards talk about victories, breakthroughs, and even public recognition. If you have put in the work, trust that you will be celebrated. GEMINI (MAY 22-JUNE 21) Words can both heal and hurt depending on how you choose to use them. Given that we are still in retrograde season, you are likely to get triggered easily. Speak and act from a place of awareness, especially at the start of the week. Unexpected expenses on Friday could throw you off your game. What are your experiences teaching you. CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 22) This week comes with the promise of financial breakthroughs. If you have put in the work, get ready to receive major rewards. The key is to stay grounded and make practical decisions that will serve you in the long run. Working with an expert could also help you take your money game up a notch. LEO (JULY 23-AUG 22) Don’t let that feeling of stagnation bring you down. Instead, step back and reassess your situation. Trust that in these moments you will find divine clarity. As such, this week isn’t so much about achieving your targets and going after your big goals. It’s about praying and dancing and meditating. It’s about experiencing ease and comfort and flow. You are experiencing a massive upgrade on a soul level. Give your body the time it needs to integrate the lessons. VIRGO (AUG. 23 -SEPT. 23) You can be multi-talented and still make nothing of your life because you refuse to take the required action. Carefully examine the beliefs and thought patterns that are keeping you from realizing your highest potential. Virgo, this is the week to break out of the mental prison. Stepping away from the matrix will give you the space you need to introspect. Some of you may be on the verge of starting a new business or project. Trust that your time alone will help you formulate a concrete plan. LIBRA (SEPT. 24 -OCT. 23) Not everything that shines is gold: a quote you often forget when you’re faced with a multitude of options. Let go of the need to please other people and make choices that are in alignment with your highest good. Remember to do your research as well. This way, your choices will be backed by both logic and intuition. The second half of the week could be a challenging one. Fatigue has a way of getting to the best of us. Don’t give yourself grief about being ‘unproductive’. Instead, take time off from your routine.
SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) Exercise caution when it comes to your finances. You’re going to require a substantial reserve in order to invest in your larger-than-life dreams. This week also brings with itself the reminder that sometimes you just have to put in the work without the expectation of immediate rewards. As always, keep the long-term goals in mind. Come Friday, your focus will shift from the material plane of existence to the spiritual. A chance encounter with a mentor or guru could give you the perspective you need to make major life changes. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 -DEC. 21) This week brings with itself the realization that there is foe masquerading as a friend in your circle. Coming face-to-face with the truth will cause you pain, but it will also liberate you from this karmic cycle. In order to move forward, you must learn from your experiences and integrate the soul lessons. Trust that you are about to make a massive breakthrough, Sagittarius. Remember to give yourself the time you need to heal and feel whole again. Working with a healer or therapist is a good way to alleviate the process. CAPRICORN (DEC 22.- JAN. 20) Endings are just beginnings in disguise, Capricorn. Know that if something is being taken away from you, it’s for your highest good. Saying goodbye to the old will make room for fresh energy to pour in. Consciously cut the cords where you need to. Free yourself from the past patterns. What awaits you on the other side: joy, victory, rewards. AQUARIUS (JAN. 21.- FEB. 19) Challenges or opportunities to grow? Change your perspective to change your life. Trust that you have the resources you need to get through this obstacle course with ease. Once you open yourself to help, the right people step in at the right time. Remember, we are still in retrograde season though. It’s important that you read the terms and conditions before you make any commitments. If there are certain things that are not working in your favour, feel free to renegotiate. PISCES (FEB. 20-MAR. 20) Keep an eye out for friends who are masquerading as foes. Not everybody deserves your trust, Pisces. Take your rose-tinted glasses off and see people for who they are. Protect your boundaries and renegotiate the terms and conditions. If you don’t look out for yourself, who will? Remember to stay neutral if and when things go downhill. This will help you make empowered decisions. Spend time in nature. Practice yoga, dance, meditate and connect with the earth element. Tapping into your inner yogi is the secret to staying grounded.
