OPENING NIGHT: WILDLAND Kød & Blod Director: Jeanette Nordahl CAST: Sidse Babett Knudsen, Sandra Guldberg Kampp, Joachim Fjelstrup, Elliott Crosset Hove, Besir Zeciri 2020 | 88 min | Drama | MA15+ Denmark | Danish with English subtitles
Set in Denmark’s underbelly, first time writer/director Jeanette Nordahl’s striking Scandi noir follows an impressionable teenage girl who’s placed in the care of an estranged relative (a remarkable Sidse Babett Knudsen), the head of a family crime syndicate. After losing her mother in a car accident, shy 17-year-old Ida (Sandra Guldberg Kampp, a major discovery) is taken in by her aunt Bodil (Knudsen) and her three adult sons. Ida hardly knows this brassy, suburban matriarch, but first impressions are that they’re a loving - if dysfunctional - family. It’s not until young Ida learns of the shady nature of the family business that she begins to see through their gestures of affection and concern. Even so, Ida finds herself drawn more and more into their world, and this complicity spurs some overwhelming moral and emotional choices. Marked by convincing performances (not least Sidse Babett Knudsen, equally malevolent and maternal), Nordahl’s lean and brooding coming of age story grips with suspense. Fiercely intelligent and told with visual panache, it marks the arrival of a fresh new female voice in contemporary cinema.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION: TIGERS Tigrar Director: Ronnie Sandahl CAST: Erik Enge, Alfred Enoch, Frida Gustavsson, Maurizio Lombardi 2020 | 116 min | Drama | M Sweden, Italy, Denmark | Swedish and Italian with English subtitles, English
Crowned Best Nordic Film at the Göteborg Film Festival 2021, Tigers is an enthralling drama about the considerable cost of excellence in a world where everything, and everyone, has a price tag. Martin (a scalding Erik Enge) is one of the most promising football talents Sweden has ever seen. At sixteen, his lifelong dream comes true when he is bought by one of Italy’s most prestigious clubs, Inter Milan. Yet that dream comes at a very high price in terms of sacrifice, dedication, pressure and most of all loneliness, and Martin begins to question the allure of the life he yearned for. With a unique perspective on the world of professional sports, writer-director Ronnie Sandahl (screenwriter of Borg/McEnroe) tells the true story of 16-year-old Swedish football prodigy Martin Bengtsson, adapted from Bengtsson’s autobiography “In the Shadow of San Siro”. Taking us inside the gilded cage inhabited by top tier, rising star footballers, Tigers is a rollercoaster ride through a cutthroat world where athletes are treated like tradable commodities and tackles the taboo subject of mental health issues in professional sports.

CENTREPIECE: THE COUNTY Héraðið Director: Grímur Hákonarson CAST: Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir, Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson, Þorsteinn Bachmann 2019 | 92 min | Comedy, Drama | 18+ Iceland, Denmark, Germany, France | Icelandic with English subtitles
Writer/director Grímur Hákonarson’s eagerly-anticipated follow up to the worldwide hit Rams is a rousing, David-and-Goliath comedy about a farmer’s wife who steps up to take on the corrupt local co-op in her remote Icelandic valley. Dairy farmers Inga (Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir) and her husband Reynir (Hinrik Ólafsson), love each other deeply, but are trapped – they’re in debt, they’re working 24/7 and haven’t had a vacation in years. Inga has always been frustrated by the unquestioned commitment Reynir has to the local co-operative, unable to see the logic in them holding a monopoly over the milk they produce (and the cost of their groceries and supplies). So after disaster strikes, the plucky Inga decides to shine a light on the organisation’s exploitative practices. Unfortunately, everyone else in the community is dependent on its economic heft, and Inga’s quest soon makes her the target of a ruthless adversary. Reminiscent of underdog fables such as Woman At War and Three Billboards, and driven by Egilsdóttir’s feisty performance, Hákonarson’s humanistic and charming film is a winning mix of Icelandic gruffness and wry humour.

CLOSING NIGHT: THE EMIGRANTS Utvandrarna Director: Jan Troell CAST: Max von Sydow, Liv Ullmann, Eddie Axberg, Allan Edwall 1971 | 191 min | Historical Drama | PG Sweden | Swedish with English subtitles
A monumental mid-19th Century epic from director Jan Troell and based on the best-selling Swedish novels Upon a Good Land by Vilhelm Moberg, 5-time Oscar nominee The Emigrants follows a Swedish farming family and their voyage to America to put down roots in this beautiful but forbidding new world. Karl Oskar Nilsson (Max von Sydow) and his wife Kristina (Liv Ullmann), live on a farm in a cold and desolate area of Småland, rural Sweden. The growing hardships of their life, combined with increasing social and religious persecution cause the Nilssons and many of their neighbors to embark on an arduous journey to the United States. Following a long and treacherous ocean crossing and an equally gruelling land passage, the emigrants find themselves in the seemingly idyllic land of Minnesota. Frequent Ingmar Bergman collaborators von Sydow (a great loss to the film world last year) and Ullmann deliver remarkable performances as the couple, who encounter one physical and emotional trial after another, reflecting the story of countless others who sought better lives across the Atlantic. The film will screen with a 15-minute intermission.

Everything changes when art dealer Mr. Sundman discovers Helene and her 159 paintings stashed all around the small hut the artist lives in. Amazed by her obvious outstanding talent, he decides to prepare a huge solo exhibition for her in the capital Helsinki. However, the real excitement for Helene arrives when Mr. Sundman introduces Mr. Einar Reuter (Johannes Holopainen) to her. A beguiling biopic, Tove depicts a formative decade in the life of Finnish visual artist and author Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins. In 1945 Helsinki, the end of the war brings a new sense of artistic and social freedom for painter Tove Jansson (excellently played by theatre actor Alma Pöysti). Modern art, dizzying parties and dramatic love affairs with both the left-wing politician Atos (Shanti Roney) and the theater director Vivica (Krista Kosonen): her unconventional life puts her at odds with her sculptor father’s (Robert Enckell) strict ideals. As she struggles with her personal life, her creative endeavours take her in an unexpected direction. While focusing on her painting, the work that started as a side project, the haunting, melancholic tales she told scared children in bomb shelters, rapidly takes on a life of its own. The exploits of the Moomins, infused with inspiration from her own life, bring Tove financial freedom and international fame. Director Zaida Bergroth (Maria’s Paradise) creates a striking portrait of a powerhouse talent capturing the energy of an iconic talent and her turbulent search for identity, desire and freedom.

A breakout box office hit in Icelandic cinemas, The Last Fishing Trip follows six friends (featuring The County’s Þorsteinn Bachmann) on their annual four-day fishing trip. Happy to leave their worries at home, their spirits are high, but the fact that a whole crate of wine bottles gets smashed as they arrive at their weekend cottage is a bad omen for the stay. The fishing-for-salmon trip is really only a pretext to get away from their wives and to drink and eat in excess. But over the weekend, everything goes terribly wrong. The authority of their leader comes under question, and the filet mignon turns out to be horsemeat... In a country where attitudes towards nudity are very relaxed, the men think nothing of stripping down to their birthday suit for an icy dip, but that is not the only thing laid bare as jealousies between the friends and where they have ended up in life come to the fore. Unable to escape themselves, what was supposed to be a cosy fishing trip, quickly goes downhill. Directing duo Örn Marino Arnarson and Thorkell S. Hardarson put a The Hangover meets Sideways spin to this light-hearted comedy that pokes fun at men’s weekend-away rituals.

PSYCHOSIS IN STOCKHOLM Psykos i Stockholm Director: Maria Bäck CAST: Josefine Stofkoper, Josefin Neldén, Sanaz Saidi 2020 | 100 min | Drama | 18+ Sweden | Swedish with English subtitles
The Opening Night film of the 2020 Göteborg Film Festival, Psychosis in Stockholm is a surrealist and deeply moving drama that celebrates motherly love in sickness and in health. A mother (Josefin Neldén, The Restaurant) and daughter (Josefine Stofkoper) are on their way to Stockholm to celebrate the daughter’s 14th birthday. On the train, the mother begins to act strangely. Despite the symptoms, they try to continue the vacation as planned. When the mother’s condition worsens, the daughter is left by herself and sets off to explore Stockholm on her own for a few magical solo days and nights. This striking film is visually brilliant, creating a suggestive atmosphere of paranoia, as the mother’s delusions become heightened. Based on debut director Maria Bäck’s own experience of growing up with a mentally unstable mother, Psychosis in Stockholm is a delicate drama about a complex mother-daughter relationship and unconditional love.

A thought-provoking drama, Beware of Children is a fascinating exploration of guilt, grief and communication issues as it traces the dramatic aftermath of a tragic event in a middle-class Oslo suburb. During a break at school, 13-year-old Lykke, the daughter of a prominent Labour Party politician, seriously injures her classmate Jamie, the son of a high-profile, right-wing politician. This is the starting point of this multi-layered and complex drama where everyone - teachers, students, parents - becomes engaged in judging and questioning each other about the tragedy: what happened, how could it have been avoided, who is to blame? When contradicting versions of what transpired arise, Liv, the school’s principal and secret lover of Jamie’s father, must find the strength to confront a community in distress and face her own highly conflicted emotions. Norwegian novelist and filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud’s Beware of Children is marked by morally complex situations and features a cast of realistic, sympathetic and multidimensional characters. As we experience how the community relates to the incident, the film asks us what we expect from our children in society today.
“It’s the kind of unassuming-looking drama that slowly seeps into your bones.” Hollywood Reporter WINNER - Göteborg Film Festival 2020 - Best Nordic Film, Best Acting WINNER - Nordic Council 2020 - Nordic Council Film Prize WINNER - Thessaloniki Film Festival 2019 - FIRPRESCI Prize, Human Values Award

DIANA’S WEDDING Dianas bryllup Director: Charlotte Blom CAST: Marie Blokhus, Pål Sverre Hagen, Jannike Kruse, Olav Waastad 2020 | 87 min | Comedy, Drama | MA15+ Norway, Sweden | Norwegian with English subtitles
July 29, 1981. In the majestic St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Lady Diana Spencer marries Prince Charles. That same day another celebration takes place in the canteen of a factory in a small Norwegian town. It is the newlyweds Liv (Marie Blokhus) and Terje’s (Pål Sverre Hagen, ScandiFF19 Out Stealing Horses, Kon Tiki) wedding party. In the pram lies their new-born daughter Diana, who like her famous namesake, will face chaos in the years to come thanks to her parents. The wedding and following years are less glamorous than their royal counterparts but are indisputably much more fun. Through the eyes of Diana, we witness the rollercoaster of her parents’ marriage throughout the 1980s and 1990s. To her, they are the worst parents in the world. Yet despite constant fighting, they are still in love by the time Diana (played as an adult by Ine Wilmann, ScandiFF19 Sonja - The White Swan) is preparing for her own marriage 30 years later. Driven by Bruce Springsteen’s rock ‘n roll and the ubiquitous disco of the era, director Charlotte Blom’s delightful second feature Diana’s Wedding is a spirited portrait of a dysfunctional family with its turbulent ups and downs, tears and laughter.
“A captivating feelgood comedy.” Aftenposten

DISCO Director: Jorunn Myklebust Syverse CAST: Josefine Frida, Nicolai Cleve Broch, Kjærsti Odden Skjeldal, Andrea Bræin Hovig 2019 | 93 min | Drama | 18+ Norway | Norwegian with English subtitles, English
Rising Norwegian star Josefine Frida shines in Jorunn Myklebust Syversen’s provocative new drama about a young Christian dancer who is forced to confront her faith. Devout believer Mirjam (Frida) is a 19-year-old dance champion with the world at her feet. But dancing for Mirjam isn’t about pleasure or the music. It’s about a desperate need for approval, stoked by her mother (Kjærsti Odden Skjeldal) - whose brother is a very prominent pastor - and by her charismatic stepfather (Nicolai Cleve Broch) who runs ‘The Freedom’, the hip evangelical church that Mirjam attends. When the stress finally gets to Mirjam and she begins to lose competitions, her elders don’t seek to reassure her. They blame it on her lack of faith, a devastating accusation. As her confidence slips away, Mirjam is drawn to a stricter, more conservative congregation – one that pushes her to the very edge. Profoundly sensitive and supremely confident, Syversen’s eye-opening depiction of contemporary Christian cults both dazzles and unnerves, but it’s Pettersen’s heartbreaking performance as a young woman whose options are rapidly shrinking that makes Disco essential viewing.
“Beautiful and heartbreaking.” Film Threat WINNER - Festival del Cinema Europeo 2020 - Best Screenplay WINNER - Göteborg Film Festival 2020 - Sven Nykvist Cinematography Award NOMINEE - Göteborg Film Festival 2020 - Best Nordic Film

HOPE Håp Director: Maria Sødahl CAST: Andrea Bræin Hovig, Stellan Skarsgård, Elli Rhiannon Müller Osborne 2019 | 126 min | Drama, Romance | 18+ Norway, Sweden | Norwegian with English subtitles
Norway’s submission to the 2021 Academy Awards, Hope powerfully portrays a turning point in one couple’s long love story. Choreographer Anja (Andrea Bræin Hovig, also Beware of Children) lives with theatre director Tomas (Sweden’s most successful export Stellan Skarsgård, ScandiFF19 Out Stealing Horses, Chernobyl) in a blended family. For several years, the couple has grown independent of each other, with creative jobs in parallel worlds. When Anja receives a shocking diagnosis, their modern life breaks down and exposes neglected love. Alone with her grief and fears, Anja realises that she needs Tomas’ full help and support, as they are thrown into a crash course in mutual trust, and eventually a joint struggle to deal with this unexpected and premature illness. Yet by learning to know each other anew, they unconsciously become principal characters in a love story. A moving autobiographical work from writer-director Maria Sødahl, the intimate and heartfelt Hope is a melancholy but highly satisfying and award-winning adult drama that has impressed critics worldwide with the impeccable performances and nuanced direction.
“A superb drama. One of the year’s richest and most rewarding contemporary dramas.” Roger Ebert WINNER - Amanda Awards 2020 - Best Actress, Best Production Design WINNER - Berlin International Film Festival 2020 - European Cinemas Label for Best Film in Panorama section
