The Friends of the Palatine Library

Donations of books, CDs, DVDs, and related items are gratefully accepted.

Thank you! All proceeds from the sales benefit the Library. The Friends group continues to fund the Summer and Winter Reading Programs at the Library.

We are looking for more volunteers.

Membership forms to join the Friends are available in the lobby of the Main Library. Single or family membership is $10 per year. One of the benefits of being a member is FREE entry on Friday night for each sale offered during the term of your membership.

Curbside drop off of donation materials is available the last Saturday of each month from 9:15 a.m. – Noon.

A New Fun-to-Learn Kiosk Homebound delivery service is available to valid Library District cardholders who are unable to come to the Library for a minimum of 30 days due to a temporary or a permanent disabling condition. Complete an application form and submit it to the Homebound Services Coordinator.

The Friends of Palatine Library recently provided funds to purchase a new addition to our Early Literacy Area: an interactive learning kiosk, called a Seed Pod. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers have fun while developing their language and pre-literacy skills: counting, identifying colors, and understanding emotions.

The Library Foundation

The Palatine Library Foundation raises private funds for library projects and services that would otherwise not be funded by tax revenue. They have supported various projects, including furnishings, equipment, partnership programs, and networking with the Chamber of Commerce. The Foundation recently donated funds to purchase cameras and camcorders that are available to check out in the Digital Media Center. These funds will also be used to provide a collection of GoPro cameras for cardholders to borrow this summer. If you are interested in joining, the Foundation is seeking additional Board members. At the Heart of Our Community

According to the Pew Internet Research Center, “Americans strongly value the role of public libraries in their communities, both for providing access to materials and resources, and for promoting literacy and improving the overall quality of life.”

The results of our recent community survey show that residents of Palatine Public Library District agree: 99% of over 6000 respondents declared, “I believe Palatine Library is essential to the community.”

Many residents further explained how the library has improved their lives, and offered suggestions for how we can build on this success.

With three locations serving nearly 90,000 residents, Palatine Library staff delivers an extraordinary variety of valuable services for all ages and interests, whether in person or online. Through our core values and mission, we provide residents and neighbors with access to information, ideas, and experiences that enrich lives and strengthen our community.

A BIG Applause for Our Volunteers

Join us in celebrating National Volunteer Week, April 23-29. Our volunteers give their time to help the Library. They assist staff in almost every department of the Library. These dedicated folks help by shelving books, re-casing/cleaning DVDs and CDs, helping at the branches, assisting at programs, cleaning up, and helping with the reading programs. Last fiscal year (July 2015 – June 2016) over 100 volunteers gave more than 3600 hours of their time to the Library. In addition, we have five high school students, finishing up 20 volunteer hours for graduation requirements.

We would like to especially recognize these volunteers who have dedicated five years or more: Irene Jost, started in June, 2004; Helen Verschuroff, March, 2001; Gail Richardson, October, 2007; Alice Sum, August, 2010; Pat McVeigh, April, 2010; and Edie Litwin, September, 2010. Thanks to all of you–we couldn’t do it without you!

Winter Reading Success!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Winter Reading Challenge! 7014 books were read, exceeding our goal of 5000 books!

Thank you to Palatine Bank and Trust, and Warehouse Direct for partnering with the Library to each donate $1000 to JOURNEYS The Road Home. These generous donations help provide shelter and social services to those who are homeless or at risk in suburban Northern/Northwestern Cook County. Thanks to the Friends of Palatine Library for the Winter Reading Challenge sign-up gifts: the mugs and fuzzy-faced snowballs were a big hit!

Each day at Palatine Library:

• We are the community’s living room: a third place—between home and work—a place where people can gather, collaborate, and exchange ideas in a safe and welcoming environment.

Enjoy a presentation of different religions, hosted at the Sikh Temple in Palatine.

Speakers from Buddhist (Tripitaka), Christian (Bible), Hindu (Gita), Jewish (Torah), Muslim (Qur'an), and Sikh (Guru Granth Sahib) faiths discuss their Holy Books, with a question and answer session afterward. Stay for a tour of the Gurdwara and enjoy a vegetarian meal, then stay for the religious service.

The Sikh Gurdwara is managed by the Sikh Religious Society and focuses on Sikh religious services, Punjabi language/Kirtan classes, and the charitable and nonprofit endeavors of society. Sikhism, a monotheistic religion, follows the teachings of ten Gurus (Teachers).

Visitors are always welcome.

Guidelines: Consumption or possession of alcohol and tobacco is not permitted; men and women must wear a head covering (supplied), and remove shoes in prayer hall and dining area; casual clothes recommended for sitting on the floor.

Borrow a Roku to Stream Netflix, Movies, and Music A Roku is a small device that attaches to your HDTV’s HDMI port. It streams TV shows, movies, and music from the internet to your TV. Borrowing a Roku from the Library includes a subscription to Netflix and a growing collection of movies in the Vudu app. Popular channels like PBS, PBS Kids, YouTube, Vevo, and Smithsonian are also included. The necessary accounts are already set up for each Roku. You will need an HDTV with an available HDMI port, high-speed WiFi, and an electrical outlet. We are hosting the 2016/2017 Illinois Art Education Association Touring Student Show this April. This show consists of 45 pieces of award-winning art created from Illinois K-12 students, produced with a variety of techniques, including: drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and photography.

These outstanding pieces were selected from over 790 entries submitted for the annual show.

Congratulations to Gustavo Gonzales, a sixth-grader from Lincoln School in Palatine! His award-winning Dragon Eye colored-pencil drawing is in the show.

“Lincoln School is honored to have Gustavo selected to be a part of the IAEA Student Show. Gustavo is a very talented, hardworking artist, and is truly deserving of this honor. We are so proud of him. This is the fourth year in a row that a Lincoln student has been a part of the show, and we are excited to see it so close to home,” says art teacher Lee Ann Karsbaek.
