Consider joining this group – they need volunteers, and no special skills are required. Single or family membership is $10 per year. Membership makes a difference for the Library and grants free entry on Friday night for each sale during the term of membership.

Members meet at the Library at 7:00 p.m. on the fifth Wednesday of the month (when applicable).

Teaming Up With Schools for Success When schools and libraries work together, everybody wins. Collaboration multiplies resources and services, giving kids more opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for success. At Palatine Library, we work hard to strengthen our community by helping local schools prepare students for life.

School Services Librarian Lupe Colin coordinates with local teachers to ensure that our collections, programs, and services support students’ needs. This task keeps Lupe busy both inside and outside the Library building.

Our School Textbook and Youth collections are regularly updated to reflect local curriculum and school reading lists. In our play areas, kids have a chance to learn other life skills— like creativity, innovation, patience, and cooperation. We love being a field trip destination and are always happy to guide visiting classes through our building.

Last spring Lupe and our staff brought the Library into many classrooms.

We presented book talks, promoted library resources, and introduced STEM concepts using the Library’s LEGO WeDo robotics kits. Library staff attended countless school events to sign students up for library cards. Lupe, who is fluent in Spanish, also participated in District 15’s Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee meetings and incorporated programs in Spanish into her outreach.

“Bringing Palatine Library’s resources to schools is a fun and rewarding experience,” Lupe reflects. “Our school programming empowers students by encouraging them to think outside the box and teaches them that when we work together, we can solve any problem.”

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Starts Tuesday, September 19 Simply reading to your child is one of the Attend Kick-off Events! most important ways to prepare them for Kindergarten. We want to encourage the love of reading together, beginning at a very young age! Our brand new 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is open to District cardholders from birth until entering Kindergarten. Every time you read a book with your child, mark it off on the reading log — for every hundred you read, your child receives a sticker.

Reach 1000 books, and your child receives his/her own book and an invitation to a graduation ceremony! The supportive parent/caregiver receives a special gift, too! Visit the Reader Assistance Desk at the Main Library or either Branch beginning Tuesday, September 19 to sign-up and pick up your 1000 Books Before Kindergarten materials. Get a Card and Save!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month

We encourage everyone within our District to enjoy the benefits of a Palatine Library card. It’s easy to apply, simply visit any Library location with one form of photo identification showing proof of residency and receive a welcome gift.

Are you already a Palatine Library supporter? Then help us spread the word to family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Tell them about the tremendous value of having a Library card and how you’ve benefited. Recently, a staff member tallied up the amount of money saved by checking out materials at the Library, instead of buying them. Over a one-year period $2775 was saved!

Homeowners and renters of all ages, who live within the service area of Palatine Public Library District, are eligible for a card. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult when applying for a card.

Come see us to get a Library card at Palatine Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 16 and Saturday, October 21 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

New! Business Library Cards We are pleased to offer local businesses and not-for-profit

organizations within our District a Business Library card.

Businesses will gain FREE access to valuable information and services, including social media marketing classes, workshops, and meeting rooms. Enjoy the benefits of business, software, and technology video tutorials (Lynda.com); targeted marketing lists (ReferenceUSA); consumer spending data (DemographicsNow); investment tools (Morningstar); and so much more.

To obtain a card, the owner/manager needs to bring a personal photo ID and the business's current tax bill, lease agreement, or utility bill to any Library location.

The person whose name appears on the card will be responsible for all resources checked out. This card is for use at any Palatine Public Library District location and valid for one year. Reciprocal borrowing with other libraries is not honored. For more information, call 847358-5881, x100.

insight into how the Library is used and helped us learn more about how we can better serve you. You told us how much you value customer service, and the quality and variety of the print and digital collection. Many of you shared positive comments about our welcoming and friendly staff and offered suggestions to further enhance Library services.

We appreciate hearing from you and are focused on making improvements that matter to the community. Welcome New Board Members

The Board of Library Trustees is pleased to announce five newly elected board members from April's election with their terms expiring June 2021: Debby Brauer, Jeffrey Westhoff, Valerie Sherman, Bruce Jefferson, and Andrea Vanderhoek.

Debby Brauer is a former publishing house department manager, book and journal editor, and productivity trainer.

Jeffrey Westhoff is a writer and editor with Divine Word Missionaries, based in Techny, Illinois. Valerie Sherman is an attorney and fundraiser who frequently volunteers for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust.

They join Bruce Jefferson who has served on the Board since being appointed in 2011 to fill a vacancy, elected in 2013, and re-elected this year; and Andrea Vanderhoek who has been serving on the Board since her appointment in 2016 to fill a vacancy.

Correction

In the last newsletter, the article about new STEM kits available for check out had an error. The donations were given from the family and friends of Rosalie Kuttig, not Ruth. We apologize for the error.
