Eric Schmitt is a terrorism correspondent for The New York Times, and has embedded with troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Pakistan. Schmitt has twice been a member of Times reporting teams that were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Thom Shanker, Pentagon correspondent for The New York Times, routinely spends time embedded with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
New Internationalist has more than 30 years of experience publishing books, magazines, calendars and diaries on human rights and ethical issues. Foreword by the world’s greatest chef, Ferran Adriá
In Counterstrike, Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker tell the story of how a group of analysts within the Pentagon, at spy agencies, and in law enforcement have devised and carried out an innovative and effective new strategy to fight terrorism, unbeknownst to most Americans and in sharp contrast to the war-mongering and cowboy slogans that characterized the U.S. government’s public posture. Adapting themes from the classic deterrence theory that worked so effectively during the cold war, these strategists have expanded the field of battle in order to disrupt jihadist networks in ever more creative ways. Filled with startling revelations about how American national security is being managed, Counterstrike will change the way we all think about the ongoing struggle with radical Islam. $34.95 Hb, ISBN 9780805091038, NZRP$44.95 Publish August 2011, 336 pages Henry Holt and Company Quantity Current Affairs

The Roadmap to 100
The Story of Hiram Bingham, a Real-Life Indiana Jones, and the Search for Machu Picchu
The Breakthrough Science of Living a Long and Healthy Life
Christopher Heaney is a journalist who has written for The New Republic and The New York Times. A graduate of Yale University, USA, Heaney is currently a doctoral candidate in Latin American History at the University of Texas, Austin. He worked as a journalist in Peru for a year on a Fulbright fellowship.
Walter Bortz, M.D. is clinical associate professor of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine and author of Dare to Be 100. He is past co-chairman of the American Medical Association’s Task Force on Aging and former president of The American Geriatric Society. Randall Stickrod is a long time science and technology publisher and writer, and the founding editor of Wired.
In 1911, a young Peruvian boy led an American explorer and Yale historian named Hiram Bingham into the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. Bingham made Machu Picchu famous, and his dispatches from the jungle cast him as the swashbuckling hero romanticized today as a true Indiana Joneslike character. But his excavation of the site raised old specters of conquest and plunder, and met with an indigenous nationalism that changed the course of Peruvian history. In this grand, sweeping narrative, Christopher Heaney takes the reader into the heart of Peru’s past to relive the dramatic story of the final years of the Incan empire, the exhilarating recovery of their final cities and the thought-provoking fight over their future. Heaney vividly portrays both a stunning landscape and the complex history of a fascinating region that continues to inspire awe and controversy today. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9780230112049, NZRP$39.95 Publish August 2011, 320 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Popular History
This groundbreaking book is full of takeaway prescriptive advice which the world's millions of baby boomers will value. Top gerontologist and Stanford medical school professor Dr. Walter Bortz and co-author Randall Stickrod draw on new science and a thirty-year longitudinal study of centenarians to show that genetics plays a smaller role in aging than previously thought, and senility, dementia, and other diseases of the elderly, are largely preventable and not an inevitable consequence of aging. They also show that engagement, through sexual relationships, social interaction, and professional activity, is a key factor in long, healthy lives, and that physical fitness can recover at least 30 years of aging. Filled with in-depth insight and practical advice, The Roadmap to 100 gives you the power to control your own destiny and live well beyond 100. $24.95 Pb, ISBN 9780230112056, NZRP$29.95 Publish August 2011, 256 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Health & Lifestyle

The Long Night
Why We Hate the Oil Companies
William L. Shirer and the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
Straight Talk from an Energy Insider
Steve Wick has been a journalist for 30 years.
John Hofmeister joined Shell Oil in 1997 and served as its president from 2005- 2008.
When William L. Shirer agreed to start up the Berlin bureau of Edward R. Murrow’s CBS News in the 1930s, he quickly became both the most trusted and most determined reporter in all of Europe. He warned of the consequences if the Nazis were not stopped, all the while developing close ties to the party’s elite and maintaining contacts whose allegiances could not be won by other reporters, thus obtaining a unique perspective of the party’s rise to power. The Long Night fleshes out the details of the maverick journalist’s adventures in Europe, delivering a new, rich perspective on the Third Reich. $39.95 Hb, ISBN 9780230623187, NZRP$49.95 Publish August 2011, 288 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity History
Originally published within a month of the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Why We Hate the Oil Companies quickly established John Hofmeister as an indispensable expert, a straight shooter willing to challenge both the government and his peers in the oil industry. New Directions in German Cinema
Did Somebody Say Totalitarianism?
Paul Cooke and Chris Homewood, both University of Leeds.
Four Interventions in the (MIS)Use of a Notion
German language cinema is again attracting attention at home and abroad and New Directions in German Cinema explores its developments since 2000. An international group of specialists on German film, society, culture, and politics together provide a wideranging study of this remarkable turn of fortunes. They examine just what German language film now has to offer, from the evolution of the so-called ‘heritage films’ which now dominate the country’s mainstream and which examine Germany’s problematic pasts - the Nazi, East German and terrorist legacies - to those which focus on the contemporary social reality of the Berlin Republic. $39.95 Pb, ISBN 9781848859074, NZRP$49.95 Publish August 2011, 320 pages I.B.Tauris Publishers Quantity Contemporary Film Studies

Žižek looks at totalitarianism in a way that Wittgenstein would approve of - finding it a cobweb of family resemblances. He reveals the consensus view of totalitarianism, in which it is invariably defined in terms of four things: the holocaust as the ultimate, diabolical evil; the Stalinist gulag as the alleged truth of the socialist revolutionary project; the recent wave of ethnic and religious fundamentalisms to be fought through multiculturalist tolerance; and the deconstructionist idea that the ultimate root of totalitarianism is the ontological closure of thought. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844677139, NZRP$39.95 Publish August 2011, 288 pages Verso Quantity Philosophy

In this unique new book, two history professors team up to teach you not only how to think like a historian but how to write persuasively like one too. Intended for anyone being introduced to historical analysis and the basics of clear historical writing, the book examines the process of writing history from two different perspectives. The first is in a series of thoughtful essays on America’s involvement in WWII and how it has subsequently been portrayed. The second perspective offers a look into the process of writing itself. $24.95 Pb, ISBN 9780809085491, NZRP$29.95 Publish August 2011, 240 pages Farrar Straus and Giroux Quantity History
This collection brings together extended interviews with fifteen women who share the common experience of homelessness. The stories illuminate the part that gender roles play in ensnaring women in cycles of domestic abuse and homelessness. They speak to the physical stresses of homelessness, and the toll it takes on already weakened bodies. The stories challenge liberal myths about homeless people, and homeless women in particular, as vulnerable and dependent people worthy perhaps of sympathy but judged to be socially disorganized, disaffiliated and disempowered. $39.95 Pb, ISBN 9780230116580, NZRP$49.95 Publish August 2011, 272 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Oral History

The idea of a Lenin renaissance might well provoke an outburst of sarcastic laughter. Marx is OK, but Lenin? Doesn’t he stand for a monumental catastrophe that left an indelible mark on all of subsequent history and political thinking? Lenin, however, deserves wider consideration than this, and his writings of 1917 are testament to a formidable political figure. Žižek puts the 1917 writings in their historical context, while his extensive Afterword tackles the key question of whether this man can be reinvented in our era of “cultural capitalism.” $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844677146, NZRP$39.95 Publish August 2011, 352 pages Quantity Verso Politics

The period of the ‘long’ Second World War (19361948) was marked by mass movements of diverse populations: 60 million people either fled or were forced from their homes. It also contains a new chapter on the role of metaphor in political communication. This book explains how politicians' use of metaphors and myths create credible and consistent stories that help us to understand the rhetorical means through which persuasion occurs. $46.00 Pb, ISBN 9780230251656, NZRP$58.00 Publish August 2011, 352 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Current Affairs & Politics

Throughout their history, Americans have always challenged the definition of liberty, and this has allowed them to progress as a society. Harris argues that this debate is good and necessary, and that they must take this new populist uprising seriously if they are to defend their founding principles. A masterly and visionary work that weaves current events with philosophical investigation, this book rethinks Americans’ most elemental ideas of freedom in order to enable the people of the United States to face the challenges of our times. $24.00 Pb, ISBN 9780230114234, NZRP$30.00 Publish August 2011, 256 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Current Affairs & Politics

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a Muslim visionary, revolutionary statesman, and founder of the Republic of Turkey. The West knows him best as the leading Ottoman officer in World War I’s Battle of Gallipoli, the Ottoman empire’s greatest victory. He went on to lead his people in the Turkish War of Independence, abolishing the Ottoman Sultanate, emancipating women, and adopting western dress. He became the only leader in history to successfully turn a Muslim nation into a Western parliamentary democracy and secular state. $34.95 Hb, ISBN 9780230107113, NZRP$44.95 Publish August 2011, 224 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Biography

William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was one of the most influential writers of American fiction during the last quarter of the 19th century.
Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, with a preface by his daughter, Aleida Guevara.
When Abraham Lincoln appointed William Dean Howells Consul to Venice, the young writer embarked on a journey that would leave an indelible impression on his life and work. Howells lived in Italy for four years, from 1861, during the pivotal and tumultuous period of Italian reunification. Italian Journeys, Howell’s engrossing memoir of this time, describes his adventures across the country. How did Jean Monnet, an entrepreneurial internationalist who never held an elective office, never joined a political party, and never developed any significant popular following in his native France, become one of the most influential European statesmen of the twentieth century? A TRAVELLER'S HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA
A TRAVELLER'S HISTORY OF NEW ZEALAND
John H. Chambers was born in Queensland. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and most recently was a visiting professor at City University of New York. This book outlines the history of that great southern democracy from the arrival of the earliest Aborigines some fifty or sixty thousand years ago to the present. The ancient Aboriginal way of life is described; early European sightings; and the establishment of the British convict colony in 1788, which dragged the continent into the modern world. The dynamic story of Australia in the twentieth century, its role in two world wars, the post-war discoveries of huge mineral deposits, its courting of Asia in recent decades, the return of vast areas of land to the Aborigines, and its confident cultural vibrancy in wine, food, film, and art are also examined.
John H. Chambers has passed more than half his life in Australia and has traveled extensively in the pacific. As a teacher in Australia, he taught New Zealand history as a special topic and has also worked in New Zealand. This book gives the curious tourist not only a modern-day portrait of New Zealand and the far-flung islands, their political systems, and economic diversity, but also looks at the early settling of this massive area which covers about a fifth of the surface of the earth. When European navigators first sailed into this region, they were astonished at the exotic shared culture and language of the natives, separated in some cases by terrifying stretches of open ocean. The story of the peopling of the South Pacific Islands and New Zealand is one of the world's great sagas. The book covers the whole scope of New Zealand's past and present history and allows the reader to make sense of what they see in a way that no other guidebook can.

AUSTRALIA: THE EAST
TOWARDS ONE WORLD
Les Beletsky is a professional wildlife biologist and university zoology teacher. Prior to taking up writing wildlife guides he conducted many years of field research on the ecology and behavior of birds. Australia is one of the few travel destinations worldwide where almost all visitors want to view wildlife kangaroos and koalas, of course, but, increasingly, other animals as well: parrots, bowerbirds, dangerous saltwater crocodiles, large ground lizards called monitors or goannas, and the colorful marine life of the Great Barrier Reef. In this book is all the information you need to find, identify, and learn about Australia's magnificent animal and plant life. Easy-to-carry, entertainingly written, beautifully illustrated—you will want to have this book as constant companion on your journey. It includes Identification and location information on the most frequently seen animals, with full-color illustrations of nearly 650 of Australia's most common fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Warwick Ball, a Near Eastern archaeologist and author, has spent over twenty-five years carrying out excavations, architectural studies and monumental restoration throughout the Middle East and adjacent regions, having lived, worked and traveled in most countries between the Mediterranean and China. The Persian Empire was the first major eastern power to actually extend its borders into Europe. Yet Persia's foothold in Europe was tiny, distant and brief: of all the peoples from the East who entered Europe, the Iranian presence appears the least, covering little more than sixty years— Phoenicians, Arabs, Turks, Mongols, all remained longer or still remain. Furthermore, the contact is usually viewed in terms of conflict: the Graeco-Persian wars, the conquests of Alexander, the numerous wars between Rome and Iran. But Europe's contact with ancient Persia was neither short-lived nor conflicting: it was the beginnings of a complex interaction between East and West that continues to this day. This book explores that relationship.

ENDING THE US WAR IN AFGHANISTAN
IT'S EASIER TO REACH HEAVEN UNDERSTANDING THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI CONFLICT THAN THE END OF THE STREET
David Wildman and Phyllis Bennis. Analysts David Wildman and Phyllis Bennis examine a wide range of key issues regarding the U.S. war in Afghanistan. Is Afghanistan really going to become “Obama’s war”? What was the history of the U.S. in Afghanistan before September 11? What role does NATO play in the Afghanistan war? Do Afghans want the U.S. troops to stay in their country? Who are the Taliban? What is al-Qaeda? And, finally, what are the steps needed to end the war?
Phyllis Bennis. With straightforward language, Phyllis Bennis, longtime analyst of the region, answers basic questions about Israel and Israelis, Palestine and Palestinians, the US and the Middle East, Zionism and anti-Semitism; about complex issues ranging from the Oslo peace process to the election of Hamas. Together her answers provide a comprehensive understanding of the longstanding Palestinian–Israeli conflict.

A GUIDEBOOK TO THE CITY'S NEIGHBORHOOD CAFÉS Author Joe Wolff and photographer Roger Paperno collaborated on three Café Life guides—Rome, Florence, and Venice. San Francisco, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, is one of the best cities in the world for finding a fine neighborhood café to sit down in with a notebook (or a netbook) and a steaming mocha and artisan pastry. Explore all the neighborhoods of San Francisco—from the Mission to North Beach, from downtown to just north of the city, over the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin— through its homegrown cafés. Wolff and Paperno have been highly praised for their guides to café life: Wolff, for his portraits of the owners whose creative visions have made these unique places; Paperno, for his “richly evocative” photographs (Chicago Tribune). In this guide, Wolff and Paperno turn to the vital café life of their own beloved Northern Californian city, a place that, with its emphasis on the local, the organic, and the sustainable, has been teaching the rest of us how to eat and drink for a long time. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566568470, NZRP$39.95 June 2011, 160 pages NEW RELEASE Quantity

CAFÉ LIFE VENICE
A GUIDEBOOK TO THE CAFÉS AND BACARI OF LA SERENISSIMA Joe Wolff and Roger Paperno worked together on Café Life Rome and Café Life Florence in this series. The Café Life series takes you to its third Italian city - La Serenissima (the Most Serene Republic) - with Café Life Venice. Like predecessors Café Life Rome and Café Life Florence, it explores a select group of family-run establishments. However, because Venice moves to the stroke of its very own gondola paddle (voga), you'll be drinking less coffee, eating less gelato-and sipping more wine. This may be good news to some of you. The Venetians do love their wine, and you'll see them loving it at almost any time of day in one of the city's many bacari. The bacaro is a cross between a café and a wine bar, where you'll find locals knocking back an ombra (Venetian for glass of wine) and eating cichetti (tapas-like snacks) as they stand at the bar. This wine that they quaff like mineral water is usually lower in alcohol content-around 11 percent. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566567183, NZRP$39.95 2008, 192 pages

Tales retold by Jane Yolen, and recipes by Heidi E. Y. Stemple; illustrated by Phillippe Beha. From the earliest days of stories, when hunters told of their exploits around the campfire while gnawing on a leg of beast, to the era of kings in castles listening to the storyteller at the royal dinner feast, to the time of TV dinners when whole families sit for dinner in front of a screen to watch a movie, stories and eating have been close companions. So it is not unusual that folk stories are often about food. Jack’s milk cow traded for beans, Snow White given a poisoned apple, a pancake running away from those who would eat it, Hansel and Gretel lured by the gingerbread house and its candy windows and doors. Fairy Tale Feasts is more than a collection of stories and recipes. In it, Caldecott-winning author Jane Yolen and her daughter, Heidi Stemple, imagine their readers as co-conspirators. About the creation of the stories and the history of the foods they share fun facts and anecdotes designed to encourage future cooks and storytellers to make up their own versions of the classics. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566567510, NZRP$39.95 2009, 200 pages

Harold Heckle is a journalist and author. He works as a correspondent with an international press agency and contributes a wine column to the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo. A long-term admirer of Spanish culture and an inveterate traveler, he is based in Madrid and has visited virtually all Spain's wine regions. Desmond Begg was a leading expert on the wines and spirits of Spain and Latin America. He studied Spanish and Modern History at the Universities of Oxford and Granada and contributed to numerous international wine magazines. Spain has more land under vine than any other country in Europe, and over the past thirty years has transformed its wine industry into one of the greatest in the world. Using a unique combination of native and imported grape varieties, Spain now produces a wide range of quality wines. Yet its wine regions and villages, many of which are located in unspoiled and remote areas, remain relatively unknown. Thor: Myth to Marvel ($48.00 Pb, ISBN 9781441135421, NZRP$56.00) is an exploration of how the legend of Thor has been adopted, adapted and transformed through history. Resurrected in the latter part of the twentieth century in Marvel Magazine, Thor was transformed into an articulation both of an anxious male sexuality and of a parallel nervousness regarding American foreign policy. Martin Arnold explores the extraordinary regard in which Thor has been held since medieval times and considers why and how his myth has been adopted, adapted and transformed.
Father Patrick Desbois’s talk will take place at The Wheeler Centre in partnership with Monash University’s Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation on the 2nd of June at 8.00pm. Please visit http://wheelercentre.com/calendar/ event/father-patrick-desbois-holocaust-bybullets/ for more information.

ON-THE-ROAD HISTORIES
A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY TO THE ROOF OF AFRICA
Victor Silverman is an Emmy-winning filmmaker and historian. He teaches at Pomona College. Laurie Glover is a poet and essayist. She teaches at UC Davis. From the European conquest to today’s economic crisis, Californians have experienced tumultuous growth and painful conflicts. Like the grinding of tectonic plates that has produced the state’s very landscape, these encounters, disputes, and transformations have continuously made and remade California. California: On-the-Road History doesn’t relate the cleaned-up tale of the California dream that school textbooks and the tourism commission tell. Rather it presents the sometimes bitter, sometimes triumphant history behind the California myth. Included are recommended museums, state parks, and other attractions, alongside literary excerpts from local authors who give readers a sense of California in different eras. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566568098, NZRP$39.95 October 2011, 320 pages Quantity

A TRAVELLER'S HISTORY OF CROATIA Benjamin Curtis is a professor of European history and politics at the University of Seattle. A Traveller's History of Croatia offers tourists and travellers an inside look at the complex roots of Croatian history and the many influences they will see on its towns, ports and islands. After a look at how its geography and geology have shaped the nation, a fascinating story unfolds explaining its past: why there are so many Greek and Roman archaeological remains, the coming of Christianity, the sad tale of how the early blooming of the Croatian state in the 9th century was thwarted by its subsequent partition and absorption into the Venetian, Habsburg and Ottoman Empires and the tortuous struggle for sovereignty in the nineteenth century.

It is lavishly illustrated with over 500 full-color photographs from the highly praised Munayyer Collection, which includes a whole range of embroidered textiles from traditional costumes and coin headdresses of Palestinian village women to cloaks and jackets worn by village men to belts, sashes, and footwear. $300.00 Hb, ISBN 9781566568258, NZRP$380.00 May 2011, 576 pages NEW RELEASE REFERENCE FIRM SALE Quantity

Unexpected New York is about places, activities, events, and entities in New York City that surprise. These are not secret or hidden, nor necessarily off the beaten track, just not what the words New York City immediately call to mind. THE LAMPPOST DIARY
Rafik Schami was born in Damascus in 1946, came to Germany in 1971 and studied chemistry in Heidelberg. Today he is the most successful German-speaking Arabic writer. His novels have been translated into 21 languages and received numerous international awards. His bestselling novel The Dark Side of Love (Interlink, 2009) received a starred review in Publishers Weekly and was selected by PW as a Favorite Summer Read. The time is present-day Damascus, and Salim the coachman, the city's most famous storyteller, is mysteriously struck dumb. To break the spell, seven friends gather for seven nights to present Salim with seven wondrous "gifts"-seven stories of their own design. Upon this enchanting frame of tales told in the fragrant Arabian night, the words of the past grow fainter, as ancient customs are yielding to modern turmoil. While the hairdresser, the teacher, the wife of the locksmith sip their tea and pass the water pipe, they swap stories about the magical and the mundane: about djinnis and princesses, about contemporary politics and the difficulties of bargaining in a New York department store. And as one tale leads to another... and another... all of Damascus appears before your eyes, along with a vision of storytelling-and talk-as the essence of friendship, of community, of life. $22.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566568319, NZRP$29.95 9 781566 568319
Agop J. Hacikyan is a Canadian writer of Armenian descent. He is the author of several books on literature and linguistics as well as five novels, including the international bestseller A Summer without Dawn (Interlink, 2010). He lives in Montreal. For young Tomas, nothing in Istanbul is certain, except for the lamppost that he touches every day for luck on his way to school. World War Two rages, the specter of the Armenian genocide haunts his parents and he is unsure of the affections of his neighbor Anya, the daughter of White Russian émigrés. Anya and Tomas fall in love. Ten years on, Anya is in the United States studying medicine while Tomas tries to scrape together enough money to join her. He becomes the editor of a new literary magazine, and things seem to be going his way until one of his writers is brutally murdered, apparently because of a story Tomas has published. Can Tomas flee the country and rejoin Anya before getting caught up in the murder investigation?

LUNAR SAVINGS TIME Alex Epstein is the author of seven works of fiction in Hebrew, and in 2003 received the Israeli prime minister’s prize for literature. Becka Mara McKay is the author of the poetry collection A Meteorologist in the Promised Land and the translator of Alex Epstein’s Blue Has No South. The stories in Lunar Savings Time slip through time and between dreams and waking, between native tongue and elusive translation, long-dead writers and just-opened books. Alex Epstein has created a masterwork in the finest strokes—stories in which humor, stubborn memory, and strange beauty meet and part ways in less than a page. Through these pages journey a woman who travels back in time to visit a psychoanalyst; Kafka, had he lived and emigrated to Israel after the Holocaust; the wandering Cain; the siege of Leningrad; Zen masters, beggars, writers, ghosts. In Epstein’s lyrical philosophy, every imaginative proposition must answer to the burden of history—or perhaps, for every moon, there’s rain; for every love story, the fact of time. . $22.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566568524, NZRP$29.95 May 2011, 128 pages Quantity NEW RELEASE

Sunetra Gupta’s previous four novels have been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Southern Arts Literature Prize, shortlisted for the Crossword Award, and long listed for the Orange Prize. Sunetra was born in Calcutta and now lives in Oxford, where she is a professor of theoretical epidemiology at Oxford University. After years of absence, American travel writer Max Gate returns to Bengal, to the beach home of his longtime friend, the businessman Byron Mallick. The occasion is a funeral: for Damini, fervent investigative journalist and founder of a women’s shelter, with whom Max once collaborated, until ultimately she scorned the book he wrote on their work together. It is irrefutable that Byron Mallick donated not milk, but milk adulterated with chalk, to the women and children at Damini’s shelter—but did he also, to save his reputation, have her killed? The weight of this question burdens each character in this intricate, superbly crafted novel—Max; his former brother-in-law Piers O’Reilly, convinced of Byron’s guilt; and Damini’s cousin and Byron’s former ward Ela, whose affair with Max has haunted both their lives, ending his marriage and setting him unaccountably adrift. Sunetra Gupta’s consummate prose recreates the ache and complication of memory, as Max considers the tantalizing ambiguities of each of their pasts, the exquisite layers of emotion and action out of which, perhaps, the truth about Byron may be revealed. $24.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566568531, NZRP$29.95 March 2011, 320 pages Quantity NEW RELEASE

Macmillan Art Publishing Contemporary Australian Drawing 1 Janet McKenzie: with contributions by Irene Barberis and Christopher Heathcote Scotland-based Dr Janet McKenzie, long-term deputy editor of the renowned art journal Studio International, first published on Australian drawing with Macmillan back in 1986. Twenty-one years later she met Dr Irene Barberis, an Australian artist who was in the UK representing ‘Metasenta’, an international arts research organisation focused on drawing and based at Melbourne’s RMIT University. Dr Christopher Heathcote's contribution also focuses on the teaching of drawing in Australia.

Jenny Watson
Janet McKenzie visited Australia in 2008 to update her research and exercise a global perspective on the current state of drawing in this country. Her book introduces works by 78 selected artists from across the country. They include prominent figures such as Peter Booth, Allan Mitelman, John Olsen, Mirka Mora, Mike Parr, Kevin Lincoln, Jenny Watson, Jan Senbergs and Wendy Stavrianos, among many others. Recognition of the importance of drawing has sometimes wavered in recent times, but most artists would agree that drawing, in whatever medium and however it is executed, is an essential process in the development of ideas leading to creative outcomes. Often, as art history suggests and this book demonstrates, drawing can be an art in and of itself.
Mike Parr
This timely account of the art of drawing in Australia is lavishly illustrated and will have wide appeal.

Court on Canvas: Tennis in Art celebrates the origins of the game in Birmingham and explores the ways in which tennis has inspired artists from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. The book guides us from the origins of the game as a genteel pastime for the upper classes, through its codification as a sport, to the international high-earning power game of today. It illustrates the changes in fashion associated with the sport and the important role tennis played in the emancipation of women in the early part of the twentieth century. $44.95 Pb, ISBN 9780856677069, NZRP$54.95 Publish August 2011, 176 pages Philip Wilson Publishers Quantity Art

A Recent Release from Alma Books Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke Peter Benson. A tale of adventure with as many twists and turns as the enchanting Somerset landscape that forms its backdrop, Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke is, above all, a celebration of the English countryside – full of magic, history and superstition – where smoke is in the air, and where not all is what it seems. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781846881367, NZRP$34.95 Published June 2011, 250 pages Alma Quantity

Peter Benson writes about the influences and inspiration behind Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke: Inspiration is strange stuff – for some writers it comes like a lightning bolt, but for me it smoulders, usually for months, sometimes for longer. And with my new novel, Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke, it smouldered for years. The first seed was sown in 1976 (the year in which the novel is set) in an isolated village called Ashbrittle in Somerset, England (the village in which the novel is set) during the longest period of drought the country had experienced for decades. This seed then spent a long time in the dark, waiting for a chink of light that might germinate it. And this happened four years ago. I was out for a walk, exploring some of the woods near my home, when I came upon the remains of a polytunnel, one of those arched greenhouse structures farmers use to grow salad crops. Most of the polythene had rotted away, the supports were broken, and the shelves and beds where the vegetables grew had disappeared. But as I wandered through these remains, the thought occurred to me – why would anyone want to erect a polytunnel in the middle of a wood? There was poor light, water would have to be transported for miles, the risk of theft was great… and so the seed sprouted. In 1976, living in an isolated village in the middle of nowhere, I was known as a hippy, or less charitably as ‘one of those bloody freaks who lives in the cottage by the old bakery’, and a grower and consumer of what used to be called ‘home grown’. Cannabis, weed, dope, smoke – call it what you want – in those days, most hippies grew a couple of plants on a windowsill, but one or two more enterprising people grew larger amounts in secret locations. And so the inspiration grew and formed itself into the opening scenario of Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke – a village lad finds a polytunnel filled with cannabis plants. I never plan a novel, never make notes or draw sketches of my characters. My study wall isn’t covered in carefully organised postcards linked by arrows, plot points and abstract hints. I let my people (they’re never characters) find their own way through the story (it’s never a plot) in the same way that real people find their way through life. This, I think, makes for a more entertaining and believable novel, one that might even mirror the experiences of my readers. So as I’m writing and thinking about writing, I’m alert, looking out for anything that might help the seed of inspiration grow. For example, when I was working on Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke, I visited police stations, dairy farms, ‘greasy spoon’ cafes, back street pubs – all places featured as locations in the novel – to watch, listen and learn. I always try and blend into the background so never take notes, trusting on my memory to retain the things it needs and reject the rest. In addition to inspiration drawn from the places I visit and the people I observe and meet, I was also inspired by other things that might not necessarily appear to have anything to do with the novel. The most important of these would be the work of other writers, in particular the American novelist Richard Brautigan, and the poets who write in the modern English rural tradition. Brautigan has been one of my favourite writers since I discovered his work in the 1970s, and his quirky, funny but ultimately melancholic outlook helped me understand that writers didn’t have to come from a particular educational or social background, and have the right to express themselves in whatever way they feel. Poetry has always been a huge source of inspiration for me, and the poets who give me the greatest pleasure work in what could be loosely termed the modern English rural tradition. These include Ted Hughes, who wrote with a bleak and savage vision that captured the spirit and essence of the English countryside. His mantle has – in my opinion – been taken up by Alice Oswald, a poet with writes with a clarity and power unmatched by any writer working in England today. I listen to music while I work, and this is something else that helps to fire my imagination. Depending on the season, the time of day, my mood and the state of the project I’m working on, I’ll chose from Bach, Pet Shop Boys, I Am Kloot, Elgar, Jim Moray, Espen Eriksen, Messiaen and all stops between. As I said, inspiration is strange stuff. It’s mutable and inconsistent, but for me one thing remains constant; the compulsion to write and produce the best work possible with the tools I have. For in the final equation I believe that the purpose of life (it has no meaning) is to identify your gift and use it.

Buddhism is rich in fascinating practices and rituals. From well known rituals such as chanting sutras or painting mandalas to lesser known rites associated with death or stupa consecration, or derived from contact with other religions, this book offers students a unique understanding of the living tradition. It draws on eye witness reports of Buddhism on the ground, but also provides a reflective context within which the practices can be understood and appreciated. It covers religious and lay practices, art and festivals, regional and temporal variations, socio-political practices, and much else. $39.00 Pb, ISBN 9780415464864, NZRP$49.00 Publish August 2011, 256 pages Routledge Society & Culture
This book presents an analysis of international law, centred upon those historical and recent events in which international law has exerted, or acquired, its force. From Spanish colonization and the Peace of Westphalia, through the release of Nelson Mandela and the Rwandan genocide, and to recent international trade negotiations and the ‘torture memos’, each chapter focuses on a specific international legal event. These chapters consider what forces are put into play when international law is invoked, as it is so frequently today. $64.00 Pb, ISBN 9780415668460, NZRP$81.00 Publish August 2011, 312 pages Routledge Quantity Society & Culture

A Guide for the Perplexed
This is an introduction to one of the most exciting new interdisciplinary fields of research: cultural memory studies. Who was Maurice Halbwachs, and what are the ‘social frameworks of memory’? What can Aby Warburg’s work tell us about the ‘memory of art’? How do Pierre Nora’s lieux de mémoire connect history and memory? Where does the ancient art of memory meet the neurosciences? How do media shape our most personal memories? And can remembrance become globalized? Memory in Culture addresses these and many other questions about the socio-cultural dimensions of remembering, offering a unique overview of the history and theory of memory studies. $46.00 Pb, ISBN 9780230297456, NZRP$58.00 Publish August 2011, 224 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity Society & Culture
Most Zoroastrians if asked, ‘In a nutshell, what do Zoroastrians believe?’ would begin their answer with the moral maxim: ‘Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds.’ Zoroastrianism: A Guide for the Perplexed takes this foundational trifold ethic as the framework for its three main chapters. The book presents a comprehensive study of the religion through its focus on the questions that perplexed seekers might ask of a Zoroastrian concerning ideology and ethics; current discussions of ‘text’ and ‘author’; and the putting-into-practice of the religion. $34.95 Pb, ISBN 9781441113795, NZRP$43.00 Publish August 2011, 224 pages Continuum Society & Culture

The Maysles brothers’ Grey Gardens (1975) is one of the most important documentary films of the past thirty years. In the past decade the film has gained the status of cult classic, inspiring both a Broadway musical and a 2009 HBO feature film. In this first single volume study of the film, Matthew Tinkcom argues that Grey Gardens reshaped documentary cinema by moving the non-fiction camera to the heart of the household, a private space into which film-makers had seldom previously ventured. Tinkcom argues that the film is one of the first to combine documentary with the conventions of fiction film melodrama, and that the film’s appeal arrives in the rich melodramatic dimensions of the Beales’ everyday lives. $22.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844573950, NZRP$28.00 Publish August 2011, 96 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity The Arts

Classical Japanese Cinema Revisited
Ken Loach
Catherine Russell, Concordia University, Canada.
The Politics of Film and Television
Catherine Russell’s highly accessible book approaches Japanese cinema as an industry closely modeled on Hollywood, focusing on the classical period - those years in which the studio system dominated all film production in Japan, from roughly 1930 to 1960. Respectful and thoroughly informed about the aesthetics and critical values of the Japanese canon, Russell is also critical of some of its ideological tendencies, and her analyses provide new insights on class and gender dynamics. Russell locates Japanese cinema within a global system of reception, and she highlights the importance of the accounting for the industrial production context when discussing these films. $39.00 Pb, ISBN 9781441133274, NZRP$49.00 Publish August 2011, 192 pages Continuum The Arts Quantity

What are cyborgs? How have they been represented in cinema? And why have they generated such an astonishing degree of critical interest? These are the questions that underpin this book. It asks what relevance the cyborg has in exploring the nature of human identity, questioning our relationship to technology, and speculating on envisaged prospects for the future. It also goes beyond other work in the field by not only evaluating individual texts, but addressing what cyborg films have in common, acknowledging the development they have undergone over the last twenty years, and speculating on the reasons for this transition. $46.00 Pb, ISBN 9780230302198, NZRP$58.00 Publish August 2011, 264 pages Palgrave Macmillan Quantity The Arts

England’s Secular Scripture seeks to trace Englishness to its roots in England’s Protestant past, and more specifically to its aesthetic and literary rooting in Protestant values. Carruthers argues that the formation of English identities in early modern Reformation Protestantism influences English antagonism towards foreign identities, especially evident against Muslims.
