LEAD TITLES Incredible Ascents to Everest Celebrating 60 Years of the First Successful Ascent Sumati Nagrath has written numerous articles, profiles, and interviews in the Indian press including, India Today Travel Plus and Business World, India's leading English-language business weekly. After seven weeks of climbing, at 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay reached the top of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. They were the first people to ever reach the summit of Mount Everest. News of their successful climb quickly made headlines around the world. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became heroes. Soaring in height to 29,029 feet (8,848 meters) above sea level, Mount Everest is a geographical giant. Despite this, over the last 90 years, hundreds of men and women have attempted this perilous journey to the peak, and many have lived not only to tell the tale, but bask in the warm glory of the fame that this achievement naturally brings with it. But it is more than a quest for fame that drives ordinary people to undertake this most extraordinary challenge of all. For people like George Leigh Mallory and the men of his generation the challenge was not just personal, they were attempting to scale the mountain on behalf of humanity. It was 29 years after Mallory's disappearance in 1924 that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to stand on the peak of Mount Everest. The mountain, it seemed, could be tamed. Those who came after were driven by a variety of reasons, but whatever their motivation, each of the climbers included in this book overcame extraordinary odds to reach the top of the world's tallest mountain. In the process not only did they create history, they also shattered stereotypes to redefine the limits of possibility. $39.95 Hb, ISBN 9781566569415 Published May 2013, 224 pages Interlink NZRRP$55.00

“In this ground narrative of missed chances, grafted glory, untimely ends and doubtful successes, what stands out are the little tales of valor and comradeship shown by ordinary, unknown men... Incredible Ascents to Everest is a tribute to all those brave men and women who have heeded the call of the Everest and answered it, sometimes with their lives.” -The Telegraph (India) Quantity

The Žižek Dictionary Rex Butler is Associate Professor and Lecturer in Art History at the University of Queensland, Australia. Slavoj Žižek is the most popular and discussed philosopher in the world today. His prolific writings - across philosophy, psychoanalysis, political and social theory, film, music and religion - always engage and provoke. The power of his ideas, the breadth of his references, his capacity of playfulness and confrontation, his willingness to change his mind and his refusal fundamentally to alter his argument - all have worked to build an extraordinary international readership as well as to elicit much critical reaction. The Žižek Dictionary brings together leading Žižek commentators from across the world to present a companion and guide to Zizekian thought. Each of the 60 short essays examines a key term and, crucially, explores its development across Žižek’s work and how it fits in with other concepts and concerns. The dictionary will prove invaluable both to readers coming to Žižek for the first time and to those already embarked on the Žižekian journey. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844655823 Publish December 2013, 192 pages Acumen NZRRP$35.00

From the book: “I was actually quite pleased with what I’d come up with, insofar as it seemed to evidence considerable intellectual ingenuity, putting together two things that were usually kept apart and breaking with the conventional ways of thinking about Aboriginal art, which were dominated by a respect for cultural specificity, thus condemning it to a kind of “primitivism”. (And to do this in then-contemporary Australia was no easy task.) I might even have thought it was a bit “Žižekian” in its bringing together of “high” and “low” culture, or at least of two things that were not seen to belong to the same discursive universe. But I had no sooner begun elaborating my ingenious conceit, and priding myself that no one else – certainly, not my fellow Australian art historians – was thinking like this, than Žižek interrupted. Almost as though he couldn’t help himself, he seamlessly continued my line of thought, telling me how one could connect Aboriginal art and Kant’s Second Critique. And the depressing thing was, it was much better than what I had come up with.” Quantity

Jean-Paul Sartre Key Concepts Dr Jack Reynolds is Associate Professor and Philosophy Program Coordinator at La Trobe University, Australia. Most readers of Sartre focus only on the works written at the peak of his influence as a public intellectual in the 1940s, notably Being and Nothingness. Jean-Paul Sartre: Key Concepts aims to reassess Sartre and to introduce readers to the full breadth of his philosophy. Bringing together leading international scholars, the book examines concepts from across Sartre's career, from his initial views on the "inner life" of conscious experience, to his later conceptions of hope as the binding agent for a common humanity. The book will be invaluable to readers looking for a comprehensive assessment of Sartre's thinking - from his early influences to the development of his key concepts, to his legacy. $39.95 Pb, ISBN 9781844656356 Publish December 2013, 272 pages Acumen NZRRP$49.95

War Crimes, Genocide and Justice A Global History David M. Crowe, Elon University, USA. David Crowe offers an unflinching account of the long and troubled history of genocide and war crimes. From atrocities in ancient Europe and Asia to more recent horrors in Nazi Germany, Cambodia, and Rwanda, Crowe reveals not only the disturbing consistency they have shown over time, but also the often heroic efforts that nations and individuals have made to break seemingly intractable patterns of violence and retribution. While facing head-on the brutal realities of human history, this book nonetheless finds some cause for hope in the international institutions that have evolved over the last several centuries, and provides critically important insights into the ongoing abuses in Darfur, Guantanamo Bay, Chechnya, and elsewhere. $59.95 Hb, ISBN 9780230622241 Publish December 2013, 496 pages Palgrave Macmillan NZRRP$75.00

HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY Edith Stein and Regina Jonas
Marco Pasi, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Emily Leah Silverman, Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, USA.
Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) is one of the most famous and significant authors in the history of western esotericism. Aleister Crowley and the Temptation of Politics looks at the man behind the myth - by setting him firmly within the politics of his time - and the development of his ideas through his extensive and extraordinarily varied writings. Crowley's complex politics led to his involvement with many key individuals, organisations and groups of his day - the secret service of various countries, the German Nazi party, Russian political activists, journalists and politicians of various persuasions, as well as other writers both in Europe and America. This book presents a life of ideas, an examination of a man shaped by and shaping the politics of his times.
This ground-breaking book examines the lives of two extraordinary, religious women. Both Edith Stein and Regina Jonas were German Jewish women who demonstrated "deviant" religious desires as they pursued their spiritual paths to serve their communities during the Holocaust. Both were religious visionaries viewed as iconoclasts in their own times. Stein, the first woman to receive a doctorate in philosophy from Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, claimed her Jewish identity while she was still a cloistered Carmelite nun. Jonas, the first woman rabbi in Jewish history, served as a rabbi in Berlin and Theresienstadt concentration camp. A study of a contemplative and a rabbi, the book ranges across many spiritual and theological questions, not least it offers a remarkable exploration of the theology of spiritual resistance.

Converting Persia explains how Iran was to acquire one of its defining characteristics: its Shi'ism. Under the Safavids (1501-1736 CE), Persia adopted Shi'ism as its official religion. Rula Abisaab explains how and why this specific brand of Shi'ism - urban and legally-based - was brought to the region by leading Arab 'Ulama from Ottoman Syria, and changed the face of the region till this day. These emigre scholars furnished distinct sources of legitimacy for the Safavid monarchs, and an ideological defense against the Ottomans. Just as important at the time was a conscious and vivid process of Persianization both at the state level and in society.

The volume conveys a vivid picture of how politics, religion, popular culture, the world of work and social practices fit together in an exciting world of change, and will be invaluable reading for all students and scholars of the Elizabethan period.

Daisaku Ikeda and Dialogue for Peace
Hegel and the Art of Negation Negativity, Creativity and Contemporary Thought
Olivier Urbain
$44.95 Pb ISBN 9781780765723 Published August 2013 224 pages I.B.Tauris Publishers NZRRP$54.95
The prominent Buddhist religious leader and advocate for peace, Daisaku Ikeda, has placed dialogue at the centre of his efforts towards securing global justice and conflict resolution. However, far from constituting abstract plans for the future of the world, Ikeda's dialogues represent very concrete and focused activity. He concentrates on one significant individual (such as Joseph Rotblat, Linus Pauling and Mikhail Gorbachev) at a time, or sometimes small groups, in order to attempt the transformation of thinking and society through intense discussion. This book offers detailed exploration of this crucial aspect of Ikeda's philosophy of peace. Ikeda's concept of dialogue emerges as a paradoxical movement towards common ground based on respectful difference.

Andrew Hass argues that the notion of Hegelian negation moves us into an expansive territory where art, religion and philosophy may be all radically reconceived and broken open into new forms of philosophical expression. The implications of such revived Hegelian philosophy are, the author argues, vast and current. Hegel thereby becomes the philosopher par excellence who can address vital issues in politics, economics, war and violence, leading to a new form of globalised ethics. Hass makes a bold and original contribution to religion, philosophy and history of ideas.

Eusebius of Caesarea (263-339 CE) is one of the most important intellectuals whose writings survive from late antiquity. His texts made lasting and wide-ranging contributions, from history-writing and apologetics to biblical commentary and Christian oratory. Aaron P. Johnson offers a lively introduction to Eusebius' chief oeuvre while also discussing recent scholarship on this foundational early Christian writer. Placing Eusebius in the context of his age the author provides a full account his life, including the period when Eusebius controversially sought to assist the heretic Arius. He then discusses the major writings: apologetic treatises; the pedagogical and exegetical works; the historical texts; the anti-Marcellan theological discourses; and expositions directly connected to the Emperor Constantine.

How Jewish is modern Jewish philosophy? The question at first appears nonsensical, until we consider that the chief issues with which Jewish philosophers have engaged, from the Enlightenment through to the late 20th century, are the standard preoccupations of general philosophical inquiry. In this muchneeded textbook, which surveys the most prominent thinkers of the last three centuries, Claire Katz situates modern Jewish philosophy in the wider cultural and intellectual context of its day, indicating how broader currents of British, French and German thought influenced its practitioners. But she also addresses the unique ways in which being Jewish coloured their output, suggesting that a keen sense of particularity enabled the Jewish philosophers to help define the whole modern era.

Pindar
Philosophy for Everyone
Richard Stoneman, University of Exeter, UK.
Matthew Chrisman, Duncan Pritchard, Jane Suilin Lavelle, Michela Massimi,Alasdair Richmond and Dave Ward are all at the University of Edinburgh, UK.
The 6th/5th century BCE Greek melic (or songwriting) poet Pindar was one of the most celebrated lyricists of antiquity. His famous victory odes offer a paean to the heroic athlete, and collectively are an attempt to encapsulate, through choral songs of exaltation, the glory of the sportsman's moment of victory - whether in athletics or horse-racing - at a variety of Panhellenic festivals and Olympian games. In this first work on the subject for many years, Richard Stoneman shows that Pindar's works, while at first seeming obscure and fragmentary, reward further study. An unmatched craftsman with words, and witness to a profoundly religious sensibility, he is a poet who takes modern readers to the heart of Greek ideas about the gods, fleeting human achievement and fallibility. The author examines questions of performance and genre; patronage; imagery; and reception, beginning with Horace.

Key topics and their areas of focus include: Epistemology - what our knowledge of the world and ourselves consists in, and how we come to have it; Philosophy of Science - foundational conceptual issues in scientific research and practice; Philosophy of Mind - what it means for something to have a mind, and how minds should be understood and explained; Moral Philosophy - the nature of our moral judgements and reactions, whether they aim at some objective moral truth, or are mere personal or cultural preferences, and; Metaphysics - fundamental conceptual questions about the nature of reality.

Many important right-wing political figures from the late nineteenth century and inter-war period have been over-shadowed in history by Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. Rebecca Haynes here assesses the careers of seventeen of the most important figures in right-wing politics in Central and Eastern Europe during this period and reveals the significance of leaders whose impact has been overlooked. Some of these were Nazi-sympathisers; others rejected German National Socialism in favour of rival nationalist and right-wing ideologies and programmes. But all played a role in modern European political history that cannot be ignored. This book seeks to draw some of the leading right-wing politicians and thinkers in Central and Eastern Europe out from under Hitler's shadow.

This book has one distinctive feature: It combines an elementary introduction to Philosophy of Science with an integrated survey of all important subfields of contemporary Philosophy of Science. This twofold characteristic is reflected in the bipartite structure of all chapters, which start with an introductory sections followed by a comprehensive part entitled ''complementary and advanced topics". The general philosophical message of the book is reflected in its subtitle "A unified approach". Behind the diversity of scientific fields one can recognize a methodological unity of the sciences. This unity is worked out in this book, together with revealing important differences between subject areas.

Rural workers in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England were not passive victims in the face of rapid social change. Carl J. Griffin demonstrates that they deployed an extensive range of resistances - from woodtaking and poaching to the Swing Riots and Chartism - to defend their livelihoods and communities. Thematically organised, Protest, Politics and Work in Rural England, 1700-1850 analyses cultures of work, worklessness, the poor laws and poverty; relations between law, the evolving state and rural labourers; enclosure, land-use and changes in the environment; religion, custom and the politics of everyday life and resistance; rural protest movements, trade unionism, and popular, radical politics. Locating protest in the wider contexts of work, poverty and landscape change, this lively and approachable volume offers the first critical overview of a growing area of study.

From the eighteenth century onwards, the ancient Greek writer Thucydides (c 460 - c 395 BCE) was viewed as the most important classical historian. He was acclaimed not only as a vital source for reconstructing antiquity but as a purveyor of timeless political wisdom. His name is almost inescapable in nineteenthcentury discussions of history's nature and purpose. And his spirit, or the image of him constructed by German historicists, remains a significant presence in more recent debates about historical method. The author examines different aspects of the reception of Thucydides within modern western historiography, casting fresh light on ideas about history and the historian in the contemporary world. His nuanced readings illuminate changing notions of the nature and purpose of history and of the historian's proper task.
Ludwig Wittgenstein is arguably he most important philosopher of the twentiethcentury. In On Certainty he discusses central issues in epistemology concerning the nature of knowledge and sceptism. The Routledge Philosophy Guidebook to Wittgenstein and On Certainty introduces and assesses Wittgenstein's life and the background to his early philosophy; the central ideas and text of On Certainty, including its links with the arguments of G.E.Moore and its discussion of some fundamental issues in the theory of knowledge; and Wittgenstein's continuing importance and influence on contemporary philosophy.

The authors explore new meanings of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in an attempt to reconceptualize the meaning of key virtues and values that defined the basic founding selfunderstanding of the American people. The logic of these essays is inspired by some of mujerista theologian Ada MarĂa Isasi-DĂaz's characteristic convictions: the crucial role of learning from the experiences of others, especially disempowered groups.

CURRENT AFFAIRS & POLITICS The Birth of the Arab Citizen and the Changing Middle East Stuart Schaar is co-editor of The Middle East and Islamic World Reader and Mohsine El Ahmadi is the author of three books on the Islamist movement in Morocco. The widespread revolt that began with the Tunisian revolution of December 2010 and inspired uprisings in several Arab countries is arguably one of the most important events to take place in the Middle East this century. But despite the popularity of the uprisings; the overthrow of dictatorships; and revolt's huge costs in human life and economic hardship, the Arab world remains a tense region, the so-called Arab Spring an unfinished cause. This collection of original essays by 21 internationally respected scholars and experts explores the underlying tensions and conditions that gave rise to the revolt-social, political, economic, and ideological- and explains how Arab citizens are defining new destinies for their societies. Chomsky and Dershowitz On Endless War and the End of Civil Liberties Howard Friel is author of The Lomborg Deception: Setting the Record Straight about Global Warming. Through the lens of a careful assessment of the political views of MIT's Noam Chomsky and Harvard's Alan Dershowitz-the two protagonists of a Cambridge-based feud over the past forty years-author Howard Friel chronicles an American intellectual history from the U.S. war in Vietnam in the 1960s to the contemporary debate about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Major findings reveal the consistency of Chomsky's principled support of international law, human rights, and civil liberties, and a reversal by Dershowitz from support in the 1960s to opposition of those legal standards today. Friel's volume argues that a Chomskyan adherence by the United States to international law and human rights would reduce the threat of terrorism and preserve civil liberties, that the Dershowitz-backed war on terrorism increases the threat of terrorism and undermines civil liberties, and that the incremental but steady transition toward a preventive state threatens the permanent suspension of civil liberties in the United States. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566569743 Published September 2013, 288 pages Interlink NZRRP$39.95

The uprisings of 2011, which erupted so unexpectedly and spread across the Middle East, once again propelled the armies of the region to the centre of the political stage. Throughout the region, the experience of the first decade of the twenty-first century provides ample reason to re-examine Middle Eastern armies and the historical context which produced them. By adding an historical understanding to a contemporary political analysis, Stephanie Cronin examines the structures and activities of Middle Eastern armies and their role in state- and empire-building. Focusing on Iran, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, this book presents a clear and concise analysis of the nature of armies and the differing guises military reform has taken throughout the region.

In the wake of tremendous growth in the size and scope of their activities, as well as the increased complexity of their programs, how can large international NGOs work effectivelyso that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts? James Crowley and Morgana Ryan address this question, drawing on their extensive hands-on experience to offer a practical and even provocative guide. The authors cover a range of essential topics, among them: What are INGOs good at? What should they be good at? Where does new technology fit in? What about accountability? What's the best way to tackle strategic planning? In the process, they challenge those in leadership positions to recognize and implement the changes that are needed so that their organizations can perform better-and stay relevant-in the decades to come.

The Changing Face of Empire

The May 19-20, 2011 Asan conference provided a venue to reassess foreign policy decisionmaking in China. Bringing together leading voices in this reassessment, the meeting elicited lively exchanges centered not on refuting rival interpretations but on jointly exploring leads that clarify the processes of China's foreign policy formulation that have yet to be adequately explained. Updating the conference papers to cover the end of 2011, this book reflects the state of analysis on the eve of the important 2012-13 transition to China's fifthgeneration leaders. The Asan Institute for Policy Studies is an independent think tank located in Seoul, South Korea, that provides innovative policy solutions and spearheads public discourse on many of the core issues that Korea, East Asia, and the global community face.

The Changing Face of Empire is a devastating anatomy of the U.S. military's new sixpoint program for twenty-first-century war. Following the failures of the Iraq and Afghan wars, as well as "military lite" methods and counterinsurgency, the Pentagon is now pioneering a new brand of global warfare predicated on special ops, drones, spy games, civilian soldiers, cyberwarfare, and proxy fighters. It may sound like a safer, saner brand of war-fighting - a panacea for America's national security ills. In reality, it will prove anything but, as Nick Turse's pathbreaking reportage makes all too clear.

This book takes a refreshing look at the modern Middle East through the prisms of six cascading negative critical turning points. It identifies the seeds of a potential seventh generated by poor governance paradigms and exacerbated by geopolitical competition for the region's natural resources. The authors argue that this problem can only be effectively addressed through the development of endogenous good governance paradigms that are culturally appropriate, affordable and acceptable to the people of the Middle East, while meeting certain minimal criteria that ensure global moral and political cooperation. They conclude by proposing a set of recommendations designed to promote stability and security in the region and to enable its true potential as a vibrant region. Quantity

David Howarth, University of Essex, UK.
Subordination and Beyond
Ernesto Laclau has blazed a unique trail in political theory and philosophy since the early 1970s. His revitalization of Marxist theories of politics and ideology in the 1970s gave way to the elaboration of a distinctively postMarxist theory of discursive practicie in the 1980s and 1990s, in which he draws together a diverse range of theoretical sources into a coherent approach to social and political analysis. Stretching back to his critiques of Louis Althusser, Nicos Poulantzas, Ralph Miliband and Immanuel Wallerstein, Laclau has also developed this approach in a series of critical engagements with the leading social and political theorists of the time.

The Middle East has been subordinated to the hegemony of a singular superpower, the US, bolstered by an alliance with Israel and a network of Arab client states. The aspirations of the indigenous population of the Middle East have been stifled by the dynamics of the unequal global power relationships, and domestic politics of the countries of the region are regularly subordinated to the prerogatives of international markets and the strategic competition of the great powers. Employing the concept of imperialism, defined as a pattern of alliances between a center (rulers) in the Center (developed) country and a center (client regime) in the Periphery (underdeveloped country) - as an overall framework to analyse the subordination of the region. What Will It Take for Japan to Rise Again?
Olivier Urbain, Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research.
T.J. Pempel, University of California, Berkeley, USA and Bong Youngshik, Asan Institute for Policy Studies.
Every year since 1983 the Buddhist leader and thinker, Daisaku Ikeda, has issued a peace proposal that presents solutions to a variety of global problems. While the proposals themselves are both wide-ranging and specific (covering topics as diverse as counter-terrorism relations; the prohibition of child soldiers; denuclearization of the Arctic; and strategies to prevent global warming), the common denominator at their center is the role and effectiveness of the United Nations in addressing structural challenges and inequality. This substantial volume brings together, for the first time in one place, excerpts from the most topical and important of Ikeda's peace proposals.

This volume is the result of a conference held by the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in November, 2011. Organized in the aftermath of the crisis presented by the triple disaster that struck the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11 of the previous year: an earthquake, a tsunami, and a nuclear meltdown. The conference had as its overarching theme 'Japan in Crisis: What Will It Take for Japan to Rise Again?' Authors began by addressing the question of what it would take for Japan to 'recover' from not only from 3/11 but also more than 20 years of nearly unilateral economic stagnation, political fumbling, and deterioration in the country's regional and global influence.

Drawing on rhetorical and narrative theories, the chapters examine thirteen master narratives and explain how extremists use them to solidify their base, recruit new members, and motivate actions. The book concludes with an integration of the idea of master narratives, their story forms, and archetypes into existing strategic communication understandings, and suggestions for using this approach to create counterterrorism strategies.

Middle Powers and G20 Governance
Nonbeliever Nation
Mo Jongryn; Yonsei University, Korea.
David Niose, Secular Coalition for America, USA.
Two years after the outbreak of the global financial crisis in 2009, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies invited a group of distinguished policymakers and scholars to a conference in Seoul to discuss the politics of the G20. The conference was an attempt to better understand the internal politics and dynamics of the G20 so as to articulate a path for its future development. This volume reflects the diverse perspectives presented on each of the major governance groups that contribute directly and indirectly to the G20 political process. It examines how the various groups interact and what the outcomes have been of such interactions. A fresh conceptualization of a G20 system composed of groups of nations that can both balance against, as well as support, one another is presented. Of particular importance is the role of middle-power nations such as South Korea, Canada, and Australia.
In Nonbeliever Nation, leading secular advocate David Niose calls for nonreligious Americans from all backgrounds to step out of the shadows and signal their opposition to the long-dominant Religious Right. Exploring all the hot-button issues that divide the country-from gay marriage to education policy to contentious church-state battles-he shows how Secular Americans-a group comprised not just of atheists and agnostics, but lapsed Catholics, secular Jews, and millions of others who have walked away from organized religionare mobilizing and forming groups all over the country (even atheist clubs in Bible-belt high schools) to challenge the exaltation of religion in American politics and public life. This is a timely and important look at a growing demographic that is flexing it's muscles for the first time.

The Modern Middle East
Political Journalism in Transition
A Social and Cultural History, Third Edition
Western Europe in a Comparative Perspective
Ilan Pappé, University of Exeter, UK.
Raymond Kuhn, Queen Mary University of London, UK and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, University of Oxford, UK.
This hugely successful, ground-breaking book is the first introductory textbook on the Modern Middle East to foreground the urban, rural, cultural and gender histories of the region over its political and economic history. Distancing himself from more traditional modernising approaches, Ilan Pappé is concerned with the ideological question of whom we investigate in the past rather than how we investigate the past. Pappé begins his narrative at the end of the First World War with the Ottoman heritage, and concludes at the present day with the political discourse of Islam. Accessible and original, The Modern Middle East continues to energise discussion and stimulate debate on the region's history, and provides new insights and perspectives on its story.

New Democrats and the Return to Power
Promoting Democracy and the Rule of Law
Al From, Democratic Leadership Council, USA.
American and European Strategies
After Barack Obama's solid win in the 2012 election, it's easy to forget that there was a time, not long ago, when the Democrats were shut out of power for over a decade. In 1984, he led a small band of governors, US senators, and members of Congress to organize the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). Their mission: to rescue the party from the political wilderness, redefine its message, and, most importantly, win presidential elections. Here, Al From explores the founding philosophy of the New Democrats, which not only achieved stunning validation during Clinton's two terms, but also became the model for resurgent center-left parties in Europe and throughout the democratic world. Here, he outlines for the first time the principles at the heart of the movement, including economic centrism and why they are vital to the success of the Democratic Party in the years ahead.

Are Americans and Europeans united or divided over the goal of promoting democracy and the rule of law around the globe? What strategies and instruments do they wield in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East in an effort to achieve these goals? These are some of the pressing questions tackled in this volume by a distinguished group of analysts from both sides of the Atlantic. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the authors demonstrate in detail that the U.S. and the EU share many common features in their democracy promotion strategies, including shared 'double standards'. This is a much anticipated study - one that provides the first systematic, comparative analysis of American and European efforts to transform governance in developing countries. Quantity

The 21st century has already seen dramatic changes affecting both journalism and politics. The rise of a range of new digital and networked communication technologies combined with the stagnation and decline of many traditional mass media has had a profound impact on political journalism. The arrival of new digital media has affected the ways in which political actors communicate with the public, with or without journalists as intermediaries. News media remain central to political processes, but the ways in which journalists and politicians interact are changing. This book examines how and provides a comprehensive and comparative analysis of the state of political journalism in Western Europe today, including the many challenges facing journalists in this important period of transition.

The arrest of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the head of the Yukos oil company, in October 2003, was a key turning point in modern Russian history. From being one of the world's richest and most powerful men, Khodorkovsky became Putin's prisoner. After two controversial trials, attracting widespread international condemnation, Khodorkovsky was sentenced to fourteen years in jail. Richard Sakwa examines the rise and fall of Yukos and considers the relationship between Putin's state and big business during Russia's traumatic shift from the Soviet planned economy to capitalism, as well as Russia's emergence as an energy superpower. The attack on Khodorkovsky had - and continues to have - far-reaching political and economic consequences but it also raises fundamental questions about the quality of freedom in Putin's Russia as well as in the world at large.

Set against the backdrop of the Arab Spring, The Sharia State examines the Islamist concept of political order. This order is based on a new interpretation of sharia and has been dubbed "the Islamic state" by Islamists. The concept of "the Islamic state," has been elevated to a political agenda and it is this agenda that is examined here. In contrast to the prevailing view which sees the Arab Spring as a revolution, this book argues that the phenomenon has been neither a Spring, nor a revolution. The term 窶連rab Spring,' connotes a just rebellion that led to toppling dictators and authoritarian rulers, yet in The Sharia State, Bassam Tibi challenges the unchecked assumption that the seizure of leadership by Islamists is a part of the democratization of the Middle East.

In this collection of work by renowned scholar Amitav Acharya, Acharya draws on extensive research from throughout his career and examines the dominant understandings of three of the most important theoretical concepts used by scholars of world politics: power, institutions and ideas. A key purpose of this collection is to examine how these concepts, when applied to the world at large, are to different degrees limited in capturing the contexts, experiences and agencies of the actors in the world beyond the West. Through this he seeks to identify and explore alternative understandings that can expand the dynamics of power, institutions and ideas in the broader and more inclusive context of world politics.

Increasingly governments around the world are experimenting with initiatives in transparency or 'open government'. These involve a variety of measures including the announcement of more user-friendly government websites, the extension of freedom of information legislation and broader attempts to involve the public in decision making. This volume analyses the challenges and opportunities presented to journalists as they attempt to hold governments accountable in an era of professed transparency. In examining how transparency and open government initiatives have affected the accountability role of the press in the US and the UK, it also explores how policies in these two countries could change in the future to help journalists hold governments more accountable. The resolution of the civil war in El Salvador coincided with the end of the Cold War. It would prove to be a test of Soviet willingness to withdraw from support of revolutionary movements in Latin America and Washington's ability to help reconstruct a nation. This book examines the work of Alvaro de Soto, the establishment of a UN Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the peace keeping role of ONUSAL. Each played a critical role in nudging both the government and the FMLN towards peace. However, after two years of negotiations and a decade-long effort to implement the peace accords, this work questions how peace was made and whether it has endured. Are the current levels of criminal violence a consequence of that civil war?

Of all the romantic entanglements, the love quadrangle between Frances Partridge, her husband Ralph Partridge, his first wife, Dora and Lytton Strachey was one of the most tortured and tragic, ending in the death of Strachey and the suicide of Dora. Love in Bloomsbury, Frances Partridge's celebrated account of these turbulent years, describes her Victorian upbringing and tells the story of the star-crossed quartet. Nicholas Meets Barrington tells the story of a mid 20th century young life that blossoms into diplomacy at the tail end of Imperial Britain. Coming from an ordinary family, Nicholas Barrington made his mark as a diplomat in a series of postings ending as High Commissioner in Pakistan. Readers are introduced to a vast array of characters with whom a diplomat of Sir Nicholas's standing would have crossed paths. What emerges is an engaging account a colourful life with multi-faceted interests, including a love of art, antiquities, poetry and amateur dramatics. The author explores the stresses of balancing a rich range of experiences with the demands of life in the foreign service with amusing stories which humanise the experiences of diplomacy and international politics. As befits a diplomat who was something of a dilettante, the story is told with frankness and wit.
Can John D. Negroponte be described as 'The Last American Diplomat'? In a career spanning 50 years of unprecedented American global power, he was the last of a dying breed of patrician diplomats - devoted to public service, a self-effacing and ultimate insider, whose prime duty was to advise, guide and warn. Negroponte served as US ambassador to Honduras, Mexico, the Phillipines and Iraq; he was US Permanent Representative to the UN, Director of National Intelligence and Deputy Secretary to George W. Bush. He opposed Kissinger in Vietnam, argued against direct military action against Marxist in Central America and warned that Iraq War could be another 'Vietnam'. George W. Liebmann's incisive account of Negroponte's life and career is based on personal and shared experience, as well as through research and interviews with Negroponte and other leading actors.

Ivor Roberts-Jones (1913 - 1996) was one of the finest sculptors working in Britain during the twentieth century. This book is the first in-depth study of this compelling artist who was responsible for the magisterial statue of Sir Winston Churchill which stands in London's Parliament Square. It incorporates a wealth of new research and never before published images of the artist's fascinating and wideranging output, including his numerous major public works. It also provides the first detailed examination of Roberts-Jones's standing as one of Britain's greatest portrait sculptors for whom a wide array of impressive personalities sat. Finally it explores his significant achievement as a sculptor of wild animals and his lifelong fascination with depicting the blind and visually impaired.

The Battle of Pollilur on 10th September 1780, fought as part of the Second Anglo-Mysore War, was one of the worst defeats the British ever faced on the Indian subcontinent. It was fought between The East India Company, led by Colonel William Baillie. Alan Tritton presents the true story of William Baillie's life and death in India covering the period 1760-1782. Overturning the consensus view on the disaster at Pollilur, Tritton provides an original new angle in reassessing Colonel Baillie's blame for the defeat, and questions whether he should be remembered as a failure or, indeed, a British military hero.

The First Grand Tour
Alberto Giacometti
Jacobean Adventurers in Continental Europe
The Art of Relation
Edward Chaney andTimothy Wilks, both at Southampton Solent University, USA.
Timothy Mathews explores the themes of fragility, trauma, space, and relationality in Giacometti's art and the texts that respond or refer to them: the novels of W.G. Sebald, Samuel Beckett and Cees Nooteboom, and the theories of Bertolt Brecht, which recasts the iconic L'Homme qui marche as Walter Benjamin's Angel of History. During his lifelong quest to represent the human form, and to locate the humanity at the heart of conflicting conceptions of modernity, Giacometti returned to the key notions of depth and flatness, memory and attachment, through his sculptures and writings. Both a critical study of Giacometti's life and work, and an investigation of their affective power, this book asks what encounters with Giacometti's pieces can tell us about the history of our own time, and our ways of looking; about the nature of human attachment, and the humility of relating to art.
Timothy Mathews, UCL, USA.
Although the eighteenth century is traditionally seen as the age of the Grand Tour, it was in fact the continental travel of Jacobean noblemen which really constituted the beginning of the Tour as an institutionalized phenomenon. James I's peace treaty with Spain in 1604 rendered travel to Catholic Europe both safer and more respectable than it had been under the Tudors and opened up the continent to a new generation of aristocratic explorers, enquirers and adventurers. This book examines the political and cultural significance of the encounters that resulted, focusing in particular on two of England's greatest, and newly united, families: the Cecils and the Howards. It also considers the ways in which Protestants and Catholics experienced the aesthetic and intellectual stimulus of European travel.

In October 1945 at the age of 19, John Freely passed the southernmost tip of Crete on his way home from the war in China, just as Odysseus did on his homeward voyage from the battle of Troy. He has been bewitched by Homer and the lands of Homer's epics ever since. As the culmination of a life spent exploring both these lands and the stories by, and connected to, Homer, Freely has created a captivating traveller's guide to Homer's lost world and to his epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, investigating where such places as the Land of the Lotus Eaters are and what it was about the landscapes of Greece and Turkey that so inspired Homer - the greatest classical epic poet. John Freely guides the traveller through all of those places linked to Homer that can be identified and brings Homer and his world vividly to life.

However, the move away from this 'anthropomorphic aesthetic' in Western art movements, such as modern abstract and constructivist painting, have presented the opportunity for new ways of viewing and evaluating Islamic art and architecture. Drawing upon classical Arabic literature, philosophy, poetry, medicine and theology, along with contemporary Western art theory, the author uncovers a specific Islamic theoretical vision of art and architecture based on poetic practice, politics, desire and the 'gaze'. In so doing, he addresses the lack of recognition given to early Islamic thought and aesthetics in comparison with other historical periods and traditions. Quantity

Art and Life

Jovan Nicholson and Sebastiano Barassi, University of Arts, London, UK.
This book celebrates the work of India's greatest architect, Charles Correa. Correa's work has provided inspiration for future generations of architects at a time of vertiginous population and economic growth in the region. For this, he has received many awards including Britain's highest architectural accolade, the Royal Gold Medal in 1984. Always contemporary, he has subtly layered the history of the land and of ideas in his designs. His sources range from the railway models of his childhood to conceptions of the Cosmos and to street-hawkers' use of the Mumbai pavements. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a remarkably consistent approach, guided by a respect for the given conditions, a desire to effect change without forced interference, and a passion to combine fitness for purpose with beauty and spirituality.
India's Greatest Architect
This book examines the artistic partnership of Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson in the 1920s and their friendship and collaboration with Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, and the potter William Staite Muttray. Inspired by each other, the Nicholsons experimented furiously and often painted the same subject, one as a colourist the other more interested in form. Winifred wrote of her time with Ben, 'All artists are unique and can only unite as complementaries not as similarities'. New research based on previously unpublished letters, photographs and other materials draws out their fascinating connections. All the works, many of which are previously unpublished, are illustrated in full colour, each with comments relating to the work by the artists and their critics.

PHOTOGRAPHY Faces of Egypt Images and Observations Deborah Shea Doyle is a Florida-based photographer. She lived in Egypt for ten years, spending half her time there in Cairo and the other half among the Bedouins in El Gorah in Northeast Sinai. Her photos were exhibited widely, including a major exhibit at the American University in Cairo's Sony Gallery. For ten years, photographer Deborah Shea Doyle traveled throughout Egypt-from bustling Cairo to remote parts of the Sinai region-to explore the landscape and learn about the lives of ordinary Egyptians, especially the Bedouins. She visited large cities and small villages and traversed through the country's inaccessible areas, which presented her with a gold mine of opportunities to capture and record interesting faces of people she encountered along the way. Her splendid collection of photographs of ordinary Egyptian men, women, and children as they work and play in their everyday lives invites readers to discover Egypt and its people as they have not been seen before. The humanity captured through her expert lens is matched by an engaging text and observations that give readers insight into the local customs and habits. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566569613 Publish December 2013, 120 pages Interlink NZRRP$39.95

Love Wins Palestinian Perseverance Behind Walls Afzal Huda is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker known for his raw and provocative images of cultures around the world; Phyllis Bennis is a fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC and director of its New Internationalism Program; and Waleed Abu-Ghazaleh is a Kuwaiti-Palestinian designer. During the summer of 2011, armed with a camera and a map, award-winning Canadian filmmaker and photographer Afzal Huda set out to chronicle the Separation Wall in Palestine. His aim was to magnify the ugly face of the Wall and depict the contradictions and hardships endured by human beings living under a military occupation. He was intent on showing the world what it was like to live in an open air prison and how Palestinians have developed ways to cope with the Wall's existence. Afzal spent three weeks doing just that: visiting all the Palestinian areas along the Wall and interviewing people young and old from all walks of life. But instead of the overwhelming reality of misery and suffering he had witnessed with his own eyes, his camera caught images of a contrasting nature: photos of people and faces of compassion, perseverance and hope rarely seen in mainstream media's usual portrayal of Palestinians. The resulting book-conceived and beautifully designed by Waleed AbuGhazaleh-is a powerful photo journal that depicts the humanity of a resilient people. It is divided into four parts, each starting with a short introduction in English, Spanish, German, French, and Chinese followed by brief statistics taken from United Nation sources. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781566569545 Publish December 2013, 224 pages Interlink NZRRP$39.95 Quantity

David Rankin The New York Years Dore Ashton, with an Introduction by Peter Carey. Renowned New York art historian and critic Dore Ashton’s new book on the Australian artist David Rankin’s ‘New York Years’ provides illuminating insights into the development of the numerous themes expressed in the paintings and sculptures he has created over recent decades. Its 288 richly illustrated pages amply document this range of ideas.
Joseph Henderson’s contribution to the burgeoning Glasgow art world in the second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th was profound. Among the artists most regularly reviewed in The Glasgow Herald and The Scotsman was Joseph Henderson whose early works encompassed portraiture and genre painting but who later became renowned for his seascapes and extraordinary rendition of the west coast of Scotland. These feature prominently in this richly coloured illustrated book which brings to life what Henderson called his ‘bit of the Ayrshire Coast’.

While Peter Carey’s introduction offers important glimpses of Rankin’s youth and earlier career in Australia, Ashton develops this narrative and then extends her analysis into subsequent years after his marriage to poet Lily Brett and their move to a New York still redolent with the influence of Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko and many others, about whom Ashton has written extensively.
Letters of Pope Gregory John R. C. Martyn, University of Melbourne, Australia.
Dore Ashton’s text is interspersed with extended quotes from the artist himself. These affirm the genesis of his art in a long-term investigation of Buddhist thinking and calligraphy, and knowledge of Western literary sources such as the writings of James Joyce, Primo Levi, Walter Benjamin and poets like the American Wallace Stevens. Always sympathetic to politically conscious responses to tragedy as they are expressed in art, Ashton admires this aspect of Rankin’s work as it appears in series such as his Dona Nobis Pacem and Jerusalem Wall paintings, and the more recent Enniskillen works which reflect on tragic events in Ireland which affected his own family. $99.95 Pb, ISBN 9781921394584 Published July 2013, 288 pages Macmillan Art Publishing NZRRP$120.00

This book studies some forty Latin letters sent by Pope Gregory, copies of which are included in a manuscript held in the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne. It can be compared with a manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and was, Professor Martyn argues, probably copied in a 10th century scriptorium in Fleury-sur-Loire, France. Many of the letters, reproduced in this book in Latin and English, deal with the Pope’s attempts to sort out longstanding problems in Naples and Sicily and to save Rome from the bombards. This unique Melbourne manuscript, with its colourful initials and rubrication of the titles comprises a series of folios removed in the 17th century and used by musicians in Worcester Cathedral to protect their musical scores. Rebound in the 20th century and put up for sale in London, the manuscript was purchased by the Classics Department of the University of Melbourne in the 1970s. Quantity

Richard M. Perloff, Cleveland State University, USA.
The author continues to tell the stories behind popular songs in our country's history, serving as a sequel to the bestselling America's Songs. Beginning in 1890 and ending in post-war America, America's Songs II is a testament to the richness of popular music in the first half of the 20th century. This volume builds on the unique features of the first volume, delving deeper into the nature of the collaboration between well-known songwriters of the time but also shedding light on some of the early performers to turn songs into hits. The book's structure allows the author to provide historical context to certain songs, but also to demonstrate how individual songs facilitated the popularity of specific genres.
Author Richard M. Perloff details the fluid landscape of political communication and offers us an engaging introduction to the field and a thorough tour of the discipline. He examines essential concepts in this arena, such as agendasetting, agenda-building, framing, political socialization, and issues of bias that are part of campaign news. Designed to provide an understanding and appreciation of the principles involved in political communication along with methods of research and hypothesis-testing, each chapter includes materials that challenge us by encouraging reflection on controversial matters and providing links to online examples of real-life political communication.

The Politics and Values of Social Movements
This book takes a geographical approach to citizenship, arguing that it is important to understand the relationship between space and citizenship. By examining how the spatialities of citizenship are played out at a range of scales, from the transnational to the home, this book will reveal the importance of space and place to citizenship. This geographical viewpoint will offer social scientists new spatial perspectives on citizenship while a focus on citizenship will offer geographers a way of bridging social, political and cultural aspects of the geography.

Concern about our food system is growing, from the costs of industrial farming to the dominant role of supermarkets and recurring scandals about the origins and content of what we eat. Food for Change documents the way alternative food movements respond to these concerns by trying to create more closed economic circuits within which people know where, how, and by whom their food is produced. Jeff Pratt, Peter Luetchford and other contributors explore the key political and economic questions of food through the everyday experience and vivid insights of farmers and consumers, using fieldwork from case studies in four European countries (France, Spain, Italy and England).

Volume 49
Globalization: The Basics is a concise introduction to a mysterious social force - a force which means that the world is more connected than ever before and yet is also held by some to be responsible for environmental degradations, global poverty and epidemic malnutrition. Globalization is about a rapidly changing world. Worlds have always changed, but never have they changed so rapidly and mysteriously as today. Globalization: The Basics, in a word, is meant to enhance the reader's sense of the methods needed first to understand, then to act, then to live with those mysteries. Topics to be covered include: how do we define globalization? what are the origins of globalization? how did globalization become the force it is today?
Horst J. Helle studied business administration, sociology and psychology at the University of Hamburg, leading to a Dr.phil. in 1959 and a Habilitation for Sociology in 1967. The Korean Wave
Theorizing Globalization
Korean Media Go Global
Critique of the Mediaization of Social Theory: Volume 47 Marko Ampuja, Ph.D., University of Helsinki, Finland.
Since the late 1990s South Korea has emerged as a new center for the production of transnational popular culture - the first instance of a major global circulation of Korean popular culture in history. This edited collection considers the Korean Wave in a global digital age and addresses the social, cultural and political implications in their complexity and paradox within the contexts of global inequalities and uneven power structures. The emerging consequences at multiple levels both macro structures and micro processes that influence media production, distribution, representation and consumption - deserve to be analyzed and explored fully in an increasingly global media environment. This book argues for the Korean Wave's double capacity in the creation of new and complex spaces of identity that are both enabling and disabling cultural diversity in a digital cosmopolitan world.
Ampuja critically examines the works of key globalization theorists to demonstrate their excessive fascination with recent changes in media and communications technology. The author argues that many theorists' media-centric and unhistorical treatment of globalization stands in the way of a complete understanding of how capitalist societies have evolved. $42.95 Pb ISBN 9781608463435 Publish December 2013 410 pages Haymarket NZRRP$54.95

It is marked by an extraordinarily wide focus, ranging from analyses of celebrity magazines and makeover shows to examinations of the experiences of young female migrants, 'mail order brides' and young women who repudiate feminism. Palestinian Refugees and the Response to Violence
This volume constitutes a multidisciplinary intervention into the emerging field of postcolonial studies in Italy, bringing together cultural and social history, critical and political theory, literary and cinematic analyses, ethnomusicology and cultural studies, anthropological fieldwork, and race, gender, diaspora, and urban studies. It deals with four primary thematic areas: the articulation of an Italian postcolonial theory and new global citizenships; Italian politics and the legacy of race; the empire in the collective imaginary; and the challenges posed to the constructed homogeneity of the national community.
Women in conflict zones face a wide range of violence: from physical and psychological trauma to political, economic and social disadvantage. And the sources of the violence are varied also: from the 'public' violence of the enemy to the more 'private' violence of the family. Maria Holt uses her research gathered in the Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon and in the West Bank to look at the forms of violence suffered by women in the context of the wider conflict around them. Drawing on first-hand accounts of women who have either participated in, been victims of or bystanders to violence, the book highlights the complex situation of these refugees, and explores how many of them become involved in resistance activities.

Japanese society in the 1990s and 2000s produced a range of complicated material about sexualized schoolgirls, and few topics have caught the imagination of western observers so powerfully. Through exploring the history and politics underlying the cult of girls in contemporary Japanese media and culture, this book presents a striking picture of contemporary Japanese society from the 1990s to the start of the 2010s. At its core is an in-depth case study of the media delight and panic surrounding delinquent prostitute schoolgirls. Kinsella traces this social panic back to male anxieties relating to gender equality and female emancipation in Japan. The book reveals the conflicted, nostalgic, pornographic, and distinctly racialized manner, in which largely male sentiments about this transformation of gender relations have been expressed.

Disorganized crimes - outbreaks of corporate misgovernance which grow out of the inherent conflict of interest between managers and shareholders are no new thing. Economists since Adam Smith have been aware of the dilemma of having professional managers in charge of 'other people's money'. However, neither current corporate governance practices nor government regulation have prevented major financial fiascos arising out of this conflict. In the last episode (the Credit Crisis of 2007-2009), disorganized crimes nearly collapsed the global financial economy. This book explains how and why these disruptions occur and how we can modify current governance practices and government regulation to reduce the losses to shareholders and avoid serious macroeconomic disturbances such as the Great Recession. Linking two major outbreaks of the past decade (the Enron Era and the Credit Crisis of 2007-8) the book shows what is common to each. It explains how and why industry monitors such as boards, auditors and ratings agencies break down, and how management incentives, corporate compensation and promotion systems leave Directors free of liability, but companies exposed. $68.00 Hb, ISBN 9781137330260 Published September 2013, 320 pages Palgrave Macmillan NZRRP$86.00 ‘Dr Munk’s book covers governance issues from a truly economic perspective. As a safe investment, one could traditionally rely on gold markets for good, stable performance, however in recent years, they have seen surprising volatility and price fluctuation, with no visible reason as to why. Dimitri Speck illustrates in detail how central banks have secretly manipulated the price of gold in an effort to calm financial markets and control inflation. Using quantitative analysis of historic gold market patterns, the author shows how and when central banks intervene in gold markets, and how this has affected price movement and impacted the global financial markets, leading to the creation of a megabubble.

In the early stages of the 2007/8 global financial crisis it seemed likely that the severity of the crisis could provoke dramatic changes in the architecture of global finance. However subsequently it has been challenging to interpret the regulatory response. Are there significant changes, or are we witnessing a return to the pre-crisis status quo? This book provides a comprehensive and focused overview of the changing dynamics between public and private forms of transnational financial regulation, addressing recent and emerging trends in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. With chapters on the International Monetary Fund, the Financial Stability Board, bank regulation, derivatives regulation, and macroprudential regulation, the authors address five issue areas critical to gaining a broad and deep understanding of the contemporary dynamics of transnational financial regulation.

The author uncovers the secrets to luxury and presents a new model for understanding how luxury brands set themselves apart. Luxury brands would like the world to think they are above mass marketing; that they rely only on prestige, status and inherent quality to gain and retain their customers' loyalty. The truth is quite different. Through revealing new case studies of some of the world's leading luxury brands, This book demonstrates how traditional their marketing strategies really are. Based on new research, Marie-Claude Sicard presents an innovative model for creating a luxury marketing campaign, the Swerve Theory, showing how brands can convince their consumers that they are a cut above the mainstream. Managers, despite a common clear objective, often make decisions on projects with uncertain outcomes that result in failed initiatives, missed delivery goals and overrunning costs. A business case can help to build a consensus among stakeholders and providing a top-down justification for a rational decision. They can be used by a sales team to prove that the business value offered by the vendor matches the client's needs. The author shows readers how to champion new ideas, and simplify the decision making process by explaining the key theories and practices behind finance and corporate investments.

The latest research on the importance of context and culture in marketing, providing need-to-know content for marketing professionals. Large-scale marketing is not about persuading people to make buying decisions; it is about framing choices to make their buying decisions redundant. The best marketing doesn't just focus on the individual psychology of the consumer in isolation, but operates at a cultural level, taking into account their wider background, environment and lifestyle and analysing their choices and behaviours in this context, so that the customer isn't even aware their buying decisions are being influenced. In this rigorous and practical book Chris Hackley presents the latest research and provides needto-know content for marketing professionals.

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is widely regarded as a "masterpiece of modern cinema" and is regularly ranked as one of the great films of all time. Set in a dystopian future where the line between human beings and ‘replicants' is blurred, the film raises a host of philosophical questions from what it is to be human and to the nature of consciousness. This is the first book to explore and address these questions and more from a philosophical point of view. Beginning with a helpful introduction, specially commissioned chapters examine the following questions: What is the relationship between emotion and reason and how successful is Blade Runner in depicting emotions? Does the style of Blade Runner have any philosophical significance? To what extent is Blade Runner a meditation on the nature of film itself? Quantity

This book presents a theory of audience participation in the theatre, based on the importance of the moment of invitation and how an event changes character when such an invitation is made. The materials from which theatre performance is made expand to include the audience participant's body and social being, with the participant's prior experience and expectations, and their embodied, affective response to the performance becoming of vital importance. Attending to this expanded set of performance media allows us to begin to articulate the aesthetics of participation, and thereafter to consider the ethics and politics of participation more precisely. This book offers a new theory of audience participation and taps into the growth of immersive (or participatory) performance and Applied Theatre.

BFI SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
Controversies Controversies is a series comprising individual studies of controversial films from the late 1960s to the present day, encompassing classic, contemporary Hollywood, cult and world cinema. Each volume provides an in-depth study analysing the various stages of each film’s production, distribution, classification and reception, assessing both its impact at the time of its release and its subsequent legacy. ‘The Controversies series is a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate about what limits - if any - should be placed on cinema when it comes to the depiction and discussion of extreme subject matter. Sober, balanced and insightful where much debate on these matters has been hysterical, one-sided and unhelpful, these books should help us get a perspective on some of the thorniest films in the history of cinema.’ - Kim Newman, novelist, critic and broadcaster

Sebastian Heiduschke, Oregon State University, USA.
One of the most charismatic feature films of the New Wave, A Bout de Souffle (1960) has retained its appeal not only as the emphatic statement of a generational break with tradition, but also as Godard's earliest rendition of a set of thematic and stylistic motifs that would become his trademark. In this original guide to the film, Ramona Fotiade analyses in depth its production and reception, as well as its mise-en-scene and editing. She situates A Bout de souffle in relation to Godard's filmography and critical writings up to 1960, focusing on a narrative and visual discourse that is now identified with a distinctive strand in postmodern French cinema. She also explores the impact of Godard's early counter-narrative and visual strategies on the independent American filmmakers and the French Cinema du Look during the 1980s and 1990s.

Falling Down (1993) caused controversy because of its depiction of violence and vigilantism, and was accused of racism in its portrayal of a Korean shopkeeper. Jude Davies explores the film's production and reception context, arguing that it was marketed as a deliberate provocation to a growing 'uncivility' in American society.
J. Hoberman served as the senior film critic at The Village Voice from 1988-2012. He has taught at Harvard, NYU, and Cooper Union, and is the author of ten books, including Bridge of Light, The Red Atlantis, and The Dream Life.
Photography as an everyday practice is changing dramatically once again. At this moment of transition from analogue to digital, Digital Snaps aims to develop a new media ecology that can accommodate these changes to photography 'as we know it'. Expert contributors representing varied disciplines demonstrate how and to what extent the traditional social practices, technologies and images of analogue photography are being transformed with the movement to digital photography. They explore how this media convergence transforms the media ecology - the networks, objects, performances, meanings and circulations - of vernacular photography, as we research it through ordinary people's use of such new cameras and interactive internet spaces as part of their everyday lives.

East Germany's film monopoly, Deutsche FilmAktiengesellschaft (DEFA), produced a breadth and depth of films ranging beyond simple propaganda to westerns, science fiction films, musicals, melodramas, spy thrillers, women's films, fairy tales, and children's films, among others. This book covers the entire range of filmmaking under the DEFA logo, from their beginnings in the Soviet Occupied Zone through German unification and shows their continuing impact in contemporary culture. In his analysis of twelve representative films produced between 1946 and 1990, Heiduschke illustrates the complex nature of East Germany's film monopoly affected by domestic, international, and transnational dynamics and directs the attention to an influential, but often forgotten part of German film that bridged the cinemas of eastern and western Europe during the Cold War in surprising ways.

Vampires and Zombies in Film and Television
Interviews, Addresses, Commentaries
Leon Hunt; Sharon Lockyer; and Milly Williamson, Brunel University, UK.
This collection of interviews offers unprecedented insight into the plays and creative works of Suzan-Lori Parks, as well as being an important commentary on contemporary theater and playwriting, from jazz and opera to politics and cultural memory. This book contains 18 interviews, some previously untranscribed or specially undertaken for this book, plus commentaries on her work by major directors and critics, including Liz Diamond, Richard Foreman, Bonnie Metzgar and Beth Schachter. These contributions combine to honor the first African American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in drama, and explore her ideas about theater, history, race, and gender. Material from a wide range of sources chronologically charts Parks's career from the 1990s to the present.
Philip Kolin, Harvey Young
The vampire and the zombie, the two most popular incarnations of the undead, are brought together for a forensic critical investigation in Screening the Undead. Both have a long history in popular fiction, film, television, comics and games. Leading writers on Horror and cult media consider the sexy vampire and the grotesque zombie, as well as hybrid figures who do not fit neatly into either category. These are examined across a range of contexts, from the Swedish vampire to the Afro-American Blacula, from the lesbian vampire to the gay zombie, from the Spanish Knights Templar riding skeletal horses to dancing Japanese zombies. Screening the Undead sheds new light on these two icons of terror - and desire - whose popular longevity has taken them ‘Beyond Life'.

The Twilight Saga, a series of five films adapted from Stephanie Meyer's four novels, has been a sensation, both at the box office and through the attention it has won from its predominantly teenaged fans. As popular cinema, the series has had its share of criticism, even from fans. However, it also offers rich opportunities for critical attention, which the contributors to Screening Twilight provide with energy and style. The book unpacks how this popular group of films work as cinematic texts, what they have to say about cinema and culture today, and how fans may seek to re-read or subvert these messages. Chapters address Twilight in the context of the vampire and myth, in terms of genre and reception, identity, gender and sexuality, and through re-viewing the series fandom.

The Venetian Origins of the Commedia dell'Arte is a striking new enquiry into the lateRenaissance stirrings of professional secular comedy in Venice, and their connection to the development of what came to be known as the Commedia dell'Arte. The book contends that through a symbiotic collaboration between patrician amateurs and plebeian professionals, innovative forms of comedy developed in the Venice region, fusing `high' and `low' culture in a provocative mix that had a truly mass appeal. Rich with anecdotes, images, and literary 'often ribald ' comic passages, Peter Jordan's central argument has important implications for the study of Venetian art, popular theatre and European cultural history.
Nationalism in Australian Visual Culture
This intelligent discussion focuses on the elusive nature of Australian nationalism as it is defined by visual images drawn from a vast variety of sources - some surprising and others regularly encountered in our daily lives. From high art to popular kitsch, the more than 100 plates support the author’s feisty arguments which range from domestic issues related to the great Australian dream of suburban home ownership to the plight of those who have experienced difficulties in making a home here, including refugees. As Traudi Allen declares, ‘The nationalist discourse is a multifarious and contradictory matter’, with many pitfalls, ambiguous stereotypes and questionable mythologies. This densely detailed text is essential reading for all who wish to better understand Australia’s complex contemporary culture. $59.95 Pb, ISBN 9781921394010 September 2008, 230 pages Macmillan Art Publishing NZRP$71.95

Her captor, Bird, is an elder and one of the Huron Nation's great warriors and statesmen. It has been years since the murder of his family, and yet they are never far from his mind. In Snow Falls, Bird recognizes the ghost of his lost daughter and sees that the girl possesses powerful magic that will be useful to him on the troubled road ahead. Bird's people have battled the Iroquois for as long as he can remember, but both tribes now face a new, more dangerous threat from afar. Christophe, a charismatic Jesuit missionary, has found his calling among the Huron, and devotes himself to learning and understanding their customs and language in order to lead them to Christ. An emissary from distant lands, he brings much more than his faith to the new world. As these three souls dance with each other through intricately woven acts of duplicity, small battles erupt into bigger wars and a nation emerges from worlds in flux. $39.95 Hb, ISBN 9781780744353 Publish December 2013, 464 pages Oneworld Publications NZRRP$44.95 “Every so often, a book can bring the past back to life so vividly that it ceases to be history and becomes a part of the living world. joseph Boyden has done this with haunting beauty and visceral strength, repopulating a destroyed world with characters so real and striking it is hard to think of them as fictional. The Orenda is not only Boyden’s finest work, it is one of the most powerful novels I’ve every read.” -Steven Galloway, author of The Cellist of Sarajevo.

Flying Carpets
Ruth Sanderson is the highly acclaimed illustrator of over 75 books for children. Her fairy tale retellings include The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Rose Red and Snow White, The Snow Princess, and The Crystal Mountain.
Hedy Habra is the recipient of WMU's AllUniversity Research and Creative Scholar Award.
Sweet Cinderella is forced to spend her days waiting on her cruel stepsisters and stepmother, almost forgetting that she, too, was once a fine young lady with handsome clothes and a soft bed to sleep in. But when Cinderella is left at home on the night of the Prince's ball, her fairy godmother turns pumpkin into coach, mice into horses, lizards into footmen, and Cinderella's rags into a beautiful ball gown. At the ball Cinderella secretly captures the heart of the Prince, but it is not until he finds the true owner of the delicate glass slipper that the two can live happily ever after.

Flying Carpets is a story collection in the grand tradition of Arab storytelling. In it, Habra masterfully waves her writing wand and takes us on a journey as we read about people and places far away and encounter temples and mountain villages, gliding boats and fragrant kitchens, flaming fish and rich tapestries. The stories recover lost, partially forgotten and imaginary spaces, progressing from the concrete to the universal. The first two sections move between Egypt and Lebanon with a touch of magic realism. In the second half of the collection, the characters become less rooted in time and space as the dreamlike elements intensify. Throughout the book, storytelling and fortunetelling evoke a mythical past that is at the same time lost yet alive: love, loss, the yearning for alternate worlds, and the need to reinvent oneself through art permeate its pages.

Now close to death, Muhammad begs the narrator to take his papers and write his life story. We learn that Muhammad accepted Stein's invitation to visit her in Paris. As the narrator is drawn into Muhammad's story, he finds himself also drawn to a beautiful African-American woman who becomes as interested in the story of Stein's visit to Morocco as she is in the young Moroccan who is researching it. Latin Love Poetry
The Warrior Women of Islam
Denise Eileen McCoskey and Zara Martirosova Torlone, both at Miami University of Ohio, USA.
Forgotten Heroines of the Great Arabian Tales
The three major Roman love poets - Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid - are celebrated for the ways in which they used social and historical contexts, as well as a highly developed sense of place and landscape, to inform their explorations of passion and desire. These writers pursued both men and women, and expressed romantic attachments to the bucolic countryside as well as to the city of Rome. This new and attractive survey of a genre that is often called elegy - because of its metre discusses the poets and their writings against the turbulent backdrop of the Augustan age (31 BCE-14 CE). It examines the literary origins of Latin elegy, highlights the poets' key themes and traces their reception by later writers and readers.

Remke Kruk recounts the story of Princess Dhat al-Himma, brave and undefeated leader of the Muslim army in its wars against the Byzantines; of Ghamra, brought up as a boy to become a fearless leader of men; and of Qannasa, an infidel, raiding from her mountain fortress to capture and seduce her enemies before putting them pitilessly to the sword. The Warrior Women of Islam puts a bold new complexion of gender roles and the wider perception of women in the Middle East.

LITERATURE & LANGUAGE Bridget and Joan's Diary Mad About Toy Boy Bridget and Joan have been friends since childhood (apart from when they weren't). They have shared 104,493,207 cups of tea, too many bottles of wine to keep count and one man. They live on the coast. Meet Bridget and Joan. From their home at the Second Best Exotic Magnolia Retirement Home, this diary charts their eighty years of history and gives way too much information on their outlandish relationship in this smash Christmas hit. Peppered with crazy antics as the pair generally irritate the younger generations, we follow their plight from childhood, through the Second World War - when Joan worked the land while Bridget worked the GIs on the nearby US airbase - to accidental shoplifting in the local ASDA. With laugh-out-loud gags and a frequent nod to Helen Fielding's original, this year's comedy sensation is a warm and witty account of two elderly ladies joined at the artificial hip. $19.95 Hb, ISBN 9781780744377 Publish December 2013, 176 pages Oneworld Publications NZRRP$24.95

The Riddles of the Hobbit
Ted Hughes
Adam Roberts, University of London, UK.
From Cambridge to Collected
What is a burrahobbit? How many versions of the Hobbit are there? What is the buried secret in the nine riddles Bilbo and Gollum swap between one another? What are Ents? Dragons? Wizards? What is the magic of the magic ring? All these questions, and more, are answered in The Riddles of the Hobbit, the first critical engagement with Tolkien's great novel to take 'the riddle' seriously as a key structuring principle of the novel. Ringing widely across Tolkien's creative life, The Riddles of the Hobbit explores the importance of riddles to the Anglo Saxon and Norse cultures that inspired him, and discusses scores of riddles offering (usually) more than one answer for each.

This book offers new insights into neglected but essential aspects of the work of one of the major twentieth-century poets - Ted Hughes. New essays by fellow poets Seamus Heaney and Simon Armitage lead a collection of largely new voices in Hughes studies offering fresh readings and newly available archival research. Beyond the poetry and stories, these contributors draw upon recordings, notebooks, letters, writing for children, prose essays and translations. Several contributors have carried out new interviews and correspondence for this book. For the first time, this book challenges established views about Hughes's speaking voice, poetic rhythms, study at Cambridge, influence of other poets, engagement with Christianity, farming, fishing and healing.

Basic Portuguese: A Grammar and Workbook comprises an accessible reference grammar and related exercises in a single volume. A Grammar and Workbook
This volume initiates a new history of early women's writing. Focusing on a wide variety of texts-from verse and drama to household records and recipes-it reconsiders what writing meant to the women who produced and used it. The 110 years of British history that define this volume's scope (1500-1610) witnessed dramatic upheavals in politics, religion, society, and culture. As these illuminating essays reveal, women actively participated, through their writings, in key developments of the period: new media technologies, emergent performance spaces, Reformation and Counter-Reformation movements, and shifting representations of nation and race that marked colonial expansion.

There is a palpable sense of a transforming culture at the end of one century and the beginning of another in the writing of women between 1690 and 1750. This volume charts the most significant changes for a literary history of women: the beginnings of a discourse of 'enlightened' feminism, the response by women writers to the Cartesian and natural scientific revolutions of the later seventeenth centuries, and attempts by women both as writers and publishers to exploit the new possibilities in literary culture attendant on the establishment of new financial institutions . Contributions to this volume demonstrate that women were engaging in forms old and new in ways that sought to shape and transform rather than simply reflect or respond to the work of their male contemporaries.

Father-son relationships can be notoriously difficult. Often fractious, sometimes hostile, and occasionally destructive, the issue of authority is negotiated by fathers and sons in a range of styles. In this fascinating new book, John Crosby describes the filial relationships of 20 historical figures to illustrate the different ways they related to their fathers, and what this can tell us about love, authority and the wider family context. Sons and Fathers is an approach to understanding this son-father conflict based on early life experience rather than upon psychohistorian or psycho-biographical material and theorizing.
