A Twentieth-Century History

How Heroin is Bankrolling the Taliban and al Qaeda

Marilyn B. Young is a professor of history at New York University. She has been a Guggenheim Fellow and is the author of numerous books and co-editor of Iraq and the Lessons of Vietnam; Yuki Tanaka is Research Professor at Hiroshima Peace Institute of Hiroshima City University. Since the mid-1980s he has been concentrating his research on war crimes and is the author of several books.

Gretchen Peters has covered Pakistan and Afghanistan for more than a decade, first for the Associated Press and later for ABC News in the US. A Harvard graduate, Peters was nominated for an Emmy for her coverage of the 2007 assassination of Benazir Bhutto and won the SAJA Journalism Award for a Nightline segment on Pervez Musharraf. She lives in the US.

With contributions from scholars from Japan, the United States, and Europe, Bombing Civilians examines a crucial question: why did military planning in the early twentieth century shift its focus from bombing military targets to bombing civilians? From the British bombing of Iraq in the early 1920s to the most recent conflicts in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon, Bombing Civilians analyzes in detail the history of indiscriminate bombing, examining the fundamental questions of how this theory justifying mass killing originated and why it was employed as a compelling military strategy for decades, both before and since the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The book includes major new arguments, such as Japanese historian Tsuyoshi Hasegawa’s bold claim that it was the Soviet invasion rather than the atomic bombs that compelled the Japanese to surrender in the Pacific War. $29.95 Pb, ISBN 9781595585479 Publish September 2010, 304 pages The New Press Quantity 9 781595 585479 History

Seeds of Terror will reshape the way you think about the West’s enemies, revealing them less as ideologues and more as criminals who earn half a billion pounds every year off the opium trade. With the breakneck pace of a thriller, author Gretchen Peters traces their illicit activities from vast poppy fields in southern Afghanistan to heroin labs run by Taliban commanders, from drug convoys armed with Stinger missiles to the money launderers of Karachi and Dubai. Based on hundreds of interviews with Taliban fighters, smugglers, and law enforcement and intelligence agents, Peters makes the case that we must cut terrorists off from their drug earnings if we ever hope to beat them. $24.95 Pb, ISBN 9781851687510 Publish September 2010, 320 pages Oneworld Current Affairs & Politics

The Obama Syndrome

Travelling to Infinity

Surrender at Home, War Abroad

My Life with Stephen

Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written more than a dozen books on world history and politics, as well as scripts for the stage and screen. He is an editor of New Left Review and lives in London.

Dr Jane Hawking, who was Stephen Hawking’s wife for over twenty years, is a writer and lecturer. Her book At Home in France was published in 1994, followed by Music to Move the Stars in 1999. She lives and works in Cambridge.

What has really changed since Bush left the White House? Very little, argues Tariq Ali, apart from the mood music. The hopes aroused during Obama’s election campaign have rapidly receded—the honeymoon has been short. Following the financial crisis, the “reform” president bailed out Wall Street without getting anything in return. With Democratic Party leaders and representatives mired in the corrupt lobbying system, the plans for reforming the healthcare system lie wrecked on the Senate floor. Abroad, the “war on terror” continues: torture on a daily basis in the horror chamber that is Bagram, Iraq occupied indefinitely, Israel permanently appeased, and more troops to Afghanistan and more drone attacks in Pakistan than under Bush. The fact that Obama has proved incapable of shifting the political terrain even a few inches in a reformist direction will pave the way for a Republican surge and triumph in the not too distant future. $29.95 Hb, ISBN 9781844674497 Publish September 2010, 128 pages Verso Current Affairs & Politics Quantity 9 781844 674497

In this compelling memoir, Professor Stephen Hawking's first wife Jane relates the inside story of their extraordinary marriage. As Stephen’s academic renown soared, his body was collapsing under the assaults of motorneuron disease, and Jane’s candid account of trying to balance his twenty-four-hour care with the needs of their growing family will be inspirational to anyone dealing with family illness. The inner strength of the author, and the self-evident character and achievements of her husband, make for an incredible tale that is always presented with unflinching honesty; the author’s candour is no less evident when the marriage finally ends in a high-profile meltdown, with Stephen leaving Jane for one of his nurses, while Jane goes on to marry an old family friend. In this exceptionally open, moving and often funny memoir, Jane Hawking confronts not only the acutely complicated and painful dilemmas of her first marriage, but also the faultlines exposed in a relationship by the pervasive effects of fame and wealth. $22.00 Pb, ISBN 9781846881152 Publish September 2010, 496 pages Alma Books Quantity Memoir 9 781846 881152

As China Goes, So Goes The World

Do Llamas Fall in Love?

Karl Gerth, Oxford University.

33 Perplexing Philosophy Puzzles

In this revelatory examination of the most overlooked force that is changing the face of China, the Oxford historian and scholar of modern Asia Karl Gerth shows that as the Chinese consumer goes, so goes the world. While Americans and Europeans have become increasingly worried about China’s competition for manufacturing jobs and energy resources, they have overlooked an even bigger story: China’s rapid development of an American-style consumer culture, which is revolutionizing the lives of hundreds of millions of Chinese and has the potential to reshape the world. As China Goes, So Goes the World reveals why we should all care about the everyday choices made by ordinary Chinese. $39.95 Hb, ISBN 9780809034291 Quantity Publish September 2010, 272 pages Farrar Straus and Giroux Current Affairs

Captive

Framing Innocence

Jere Van Dyk has covered stories all over the world, mainly for The New York Times, CBS News, and National Geographic.

A Mother’s Photographs, a Prosecutor’s Zeal, and a Small Town’s Response

Jere Van Dyk was on the wrong side of the border. He and three Afghan guides had crossed into the tribal areas of Pakistan, where no Westerner had ventured for years, hoping to reach the home of a local chieftain by nightfall. But then a dozen armed men in black turbans appeared over the crest of a hill. Captive is Van Dyk’s searing account of his forty-five days in a Taliban prison, and it is gripping and terrifying in the tradition of the best prison literature. Van Dyk went to the tribal areas to investigate the challenges facing America there. His story is of a deeper, more personal challenge, an unforgettable tale of human endurance. $39.95 Hb, ISBN 9780805088274 Quantity Publish September 2010, 288 pages Henry Holt and Company Memoir

America’s Last Best Hope

Chalmers Johnson, University of California.

Professor Roger Scruton, American Enterprise Institute, Washington.

Dismantling the Empire explores the subjects for which Johnson is now famous, from the origins of blowback to Barack Obama’s Afghanistan conundrum, including America’s inept spies, its bad behaviour in other countries, its ill-fought wars, and its capitulation to a military that has taken ever more control of the federal budget. There is, he proposes, only one way out: President Obama must begin to dismantle the empire before the Pentagon dismantles the American Dream. If it does not learn from the fates of past empires, he suggests, America’s decline and fall are foreordained. $35.00 Pb, ISBN 9780805093032 Publish September 2010, 224 pages Henry Holt and Company Quantity Current Affairs & Politics

Snapshots taken by American soldiers of Iraqi prisoners stripped naked, humiliated and tortured, shocked the world in 2004. But, as Private Pictures relates, soldiers have taken photographs of the gruesome or sociable, shocking or mundane aspects of war for more than 100 years. It follows this unacknowledged genre of photography from the origins of popular photography at the time of the Boer War to the digital age. Private Pictures also asks what effect the wider appreciation of soldiers’ pictures might have on the popular perception of war, and on war photography itself. $35.00 Pb, ISBN 9781848854437 Quantity Publish September 2010, 256 pages I.B.Tauris Publishers Current Affairs

In 1800 the British army’s reputation was in tatters, having experienced nothing but failure in wars across the world for forty years; at home, a divided cabinet had to face the problem of Egypt, which had been occupied by Napoleon’s Army of the Orient since 1798. The task of ejecting France fell to a disparate band of soldiers led by Sir Ralph Abercromby which, against all the odds, defeated the French army, bringing Napoleon’s Egyptian Campagin to a definitive and crushing end. Piers Mackesy vividly brings to life the events of the battle, revealing how Abercromby’s brilliantlyexecuted strategy restored the honour of the British army and averted disaster for the Empire. $34.00 Pb, ISBN 9781848854727 Quantity Publish September 2010, 304 pages I.B.Tauris Publishers History & Philosophy

This book discerns in the history of Zionism the plot of a Shakespearean tragedy. A small band of European Zionists enters the world stage in late 19th century, determined to create a Jewish state. To achieve this, they must seize Palestine; induce Western Jews to become colonists; and, above all, recruit Western powers to sponsor their colonial project. Zionists can only succeed by creating Islamicate enemies; they need resurgent antiSemitism to send Jewish colons to Palestine; and they must persuade/coerce the West to sponsor their colonial project. In Europe, Jewish-Gentile frictions were local problems; in Israel, ominously, they have come to form the pivot of global conflict. $45.00 Pb, ISBN 9780230619982 Quantity Publish September 2010, 272 pages Palgrave Macmillan Current Affairs & Politics

A Nuclear Waste

Liberation, Conflict and Crisis

Gavin Harper, Open University.

Barry Rubin, director of the GLORIA Centre, and editor of MERIA Journal.

Discounted for a couple of decades as a viable solution, nuclear power is undergoing a resurgence of interest amongst politicians across the developed and developing world. A Nuclear Waste critically examines whether nuclear power is really an option for future energy provision in the context of peak oil and climate change. Focusing on the track record of the nuclear power industry, the economics of nuclear power and scientific developments in the field, Harper takes timeless anti-nuclear arguments and augments them with current facts, figures and developments in the nuclear industry, to provide an up-to-date critique of why nuclear energy is not the answer to the energy crises and climate change. $39.95 Pb, ISBN 9781848133082 Quantity Publish September 2010, 144 pages Zed Books Current Affairs & Politics

In the future there will be no politics but green politics... Climate chaos and pollution, deforestation and consumerism: the crisis facing human civilization is clear enough. The Man Who Created Dr Finlay

Duane Schultz is the author of several books of military history, and General Wesley K. Clark served in the United States Army for thirty-four years.

Alan Davies, University College London. A.J. Cronin, author of some of the best-loved novels of the mid-twentieth century and the creator of Dr Finlay, has been unjustly overlooked by literary biographers. In this, the first full-length life of this eminent but often neglected writer, Alan Davies recounts the story of Cronin’s Scottish childhood as the son of a Protestant mother and Catholic father, his subsequent medical career, and ultimately his rise to literary prominence, emphasizing throughout the importance of holding at arm’s length many of the apocryphal tales that have accumulated around the memory of the author. $55.00 Hb, ISBN 9781846881121 Publish September 2010, 384 pages Alma Books Quantity Biography

Colorful, charismatic, and controversial, George Armstrong Custer became a national hero at the age of 23 when he was promoted to the rank of general - barely two years after graduating at the bottom of his class from West Point. In this subtly crafted biography, the historian Lori D. Ginzberg narrates the life of a woman of great charm, enormous appetite, and extraordinary intellectual gifts who turned the limitations placed on women like herself into a universal philosophy of equal rights. At once critical and admiring, Ginzberg’s book captures Stanton’s ambiguous place in the world of reformers and intellectuals, describes how she changed the world, and suggests that she left a mixed legacy that continues to haunt American feminism. $25.00 Pb, ISBN 9780374532390 Publish September 2010, 272 pages Farrar Straus and Giroux Biography Quantity

Bernard Law Montgomery was a dedicated battlefield tactician, though a controversial one. He was also known as a complicated man whose legacy remains tainted by his insensitive and boastful nature and desire for personal glory - all of which can have dangerous consequences on the battlefield. In the end, though, it was only due to Montgomery’s influence that the weight of the Allied attack at Normandy was increased, and the Allied success of D-Day owes much to his farsightedness. $35.00 Hb, ISBN 9780230614895 Publish September 2010, 224 pages Quantity Palgrave Macmillan Biography

The Leopard, published posthumously in 1958, was one of the most important works of fiction to appear in the Italian language in the twentieth century. Between 1925 and 1930, its author, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, wrote a number of letters to his cousins Casimiro and Lucio Piccolo in which he describes his travels around Europe. The letters, here published in English for the first time, display much of Lampedusa’s distinctive style present in his later work: not only the razor-sharp introspection, but also a wicked sense of humour, playful in its description of the comédie humaine. $39.95 Hb, ISBN 9781846881114 Quantity Publish September 2010, 288 pages Alma Books Memoir

Mornings in Mexico

A Girl in Paris

D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), novelist, poet, playwright, painter, critic, is an icon of 20th century literature. Much of D.H. Lawrence’s life was defined by his passion for travel and it was those peripatetic wanderings that gave life to some of his greatest novels. In the 1920s, Lawrence travelled several times to Mexico, where he was fascinated by the clash of beauty and brutality, purity and darkness that he observed there. The spirited eloquence and beauty of the essays in “Mornings in Mexico” thus illuminate the inspiration behind of one of Lawrence’s most loved works and immerse the reader in a portrait of the country like no other. $28.00 Pb, ISBN 9781845118686 October 2009, 96 pages Quantity Tauris Parke 9 781845 118686

The Lost Girl

Gustave Flaubert is best known for his works Madame Bovary and Sentimental Education, and for his stylistic perfectionism and scrupulous commitment to “le mot juste”.

D. H. Lawrence’s novels represent a milestone in twentieth-century literature.

A spoof encyclopedia of contemporary accepted wisdom and commonplaces, The Dictionary of Received Ideas sees Flaubert at his witty and satirical best. Perhaps intended as a companion to his final, unfinished novel Bouvard and Pécuchet, this compilation was the result of a lifetime of collecting the absurd and the clichéd with darkly humorous explanations. A playful look at nineteenth-century values and talking points, this dictionary will provide enduring entertainment and prove relevant even today. $25.00 Hb, ISBN 9781847491657 Publish September 2010, 128 pages Quantity Oneworld Classics Fiction

Although not enjoying today the same level of fame as Sons and Lovers or Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Lost Girl was greatly successful in its time, winning the prestigious 1920 James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and remains a classic Lawrence novel of sensual awakening and the yearning for freedom. $25.00 Pb, ISBN 9781847491626 Quantity Publish September 2010, 450 pages Oneworld Classics Fiction

Eugene Onegin

The Sorrows of Young Werther

Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) is now considered the father of modern Russian literature.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German polymath, whose works spanned the fields of literature, theology and science.

When the Romantic and world-weary dandy Eugene Onegin moves from St Petersburg to take up residence in the country estate he has inherited, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with his mildmannered neighbour, the poet Vladimir Lensky. Coldly rejecting the amorous advances of Tatyana and cynically courting her sister Olga - Lensky’s fiancée - Onegin finds himself dragged into a tragedy of his own doing. Eugene Onegin was the founding text of modern Russian literature, marking a clean break from the high-flown classical style of its predecessors and introducing the quintessentially Russian hero and heroine. $22.00 Pb, ISBN 9781847491602 Publish September 2010, 288 pages Quantity Oneworld Classics Fiction

Presented as a collection of confessional letters written by the eponymous protagonist, The Sorrows of Young Werther charts the emotional journey of a young man who, during a stay in a picturesque German village, falls in love with Lotte, a local woman engaged to another man. As he realizes that his passion is doomed to failure and constant pain, Werther contemplates taking the most drastic measures. Partly autobiographical, and the prototype for many later Romantic works in its depiction of the sensitive, tortured Romantic hero, Goethe’s seminal classic is a timeless masterpiece of world literature. $19.95 Hb, ISBN 9781847491572 Quantity Publish September 2010, 512 pages Oneworld Classics Fiction

A Struggle for Life

Poet, novelist and journal writer, Jules Renard (1864-1910) is a major figure of late-nineteenthcentury French literature, influencing other writers to this day, including Somerset Maugham and Julian Barnes.

Llewelyn Powys (1884-1939) produced a prolific and eclectic body of work, including essays, a biography, a novel, travel accounts, popular philosophy works and memoirs.

A delightful variation on the long tradition of bestiary writing, Jules Renard’s short verse and prose poems have captured the imagination of readers and artists since they were originally written in 1894, with Ravel famously setting five of them to music. Presented in a new version by acclaimed translator Richard Stokes and enriched by Lucinda Rogers’s beautiful ink drawings, this sumptuously produced volume will captivate and enchant new generations of readers the world over. $25.00 Hb, ISBN 9781847491701 Publish September 2010, 144 pages Quantity Oneworld Classics Fiction

The Life of Our Lord

The Water Theatre

Charles Dickens now ranks as the most important Victorian writer and one of the most influential and popular authors in the English language.

Lindsay Clarke is the author of seven novels, including The Chymical Wedding, which won the Whitbread Award for Fiction in 1989.

Never published in its author’s lifetime and intended solely for his own children, to whom he read it every Christmas, The Life of Our Lord is an accessible and gently humorous take on the life of Jesus Christ and his teachings. Far removed from the sharp satire and social dimension of his more famous writings, but showcasing his characteristic humanity and genius for storytelling, this is both an essential work for those wanting to see a different, more intimate side to Dickens and a timeless retelling for children and adults alike. $25.00 Hb, ISBN 9781847491664 Publish September 2010, 128 pages Oneworld Classics Quantity Fiction

An Excursion in Afghanistan

Great Speeches on Civil Rights and African American Identity

The 12th-century minaret of Djam is one of Afghanistan’s most celebrated treasures, a magnificent symbol of the powerful Ghorid Empire that once stretched from Iran to India. When Freya Stark travelled there, few people in the world had ever laid eyes on it or managed to reach the desolate valley in which it lies. A celebrated portrait of Afghanistan and its history, The Minaret of Djam is a poignant reminder that this was once far more than just a country ravaged by war and the political games of the world’s superpowers. $28.00 Pb, ISBN 9781848853133 Publish September 2010, 168 pages Quantity I.B.Tauris Publishers Society & Culture

Tales of Lights and Shadows

The Mythology of the Afterlife

This book explores “A Common Word Between Us and You,” a high-level ongoing Christian-Muslim dialogue process. The Common Word process was commenced by leading Islamic scholars and intellectuals as outreach in response to the Pope’s much criticized Regensburg address of 2007, and brings to the fore, in the interest of developing a meaningful peace, how the Islamic and Christian communities representing well over half of the world’s population might agree on love of God and love of neighbor as common beliefs. $45.00 Pb, ISBN 9780230104426 Publish September 2010, 256 pages Palgrave Macmillan Society & Culture

Tales of Lights and Shadows offers a fresh approach to the traditional mythology and literature of the afterlife, centering on tensions and polarities in the afterlife concepts: bright vs. dismal, heaven vs. reincarnation, theocentric vs. anthropocentric heaven, etc. Presenting examples from virtually all the world’s religious cultures past and present, this fascinating book puts the concepts clearly in the context of the worldview and social issues of that society. $42.00 Pb, ISBN 9781441143976 Publish September 2010, 176 pages Continuum Society & Culture

Mozart wrote Idomeneo when he was twenty-four years old, and the opera was described by Albert Einstein as “one of those works that even a genius like Mozart could write only once in his life”. In this guide, Julian Rushton explains the special nature of the music in a detailed analysis of its themes and development, while Nicholas Till places the opera in its context as an expression of the Enlightenment. American Religion in Popular Culture

Puccini's La Bohème is one of the most beloved and enduring operas of all time. In this guide, William Ashbrook evaluates the opera's initial reception, the reasons for its wide appeal and Verdi's influence on the composition. Nicholas John discusses the tortuous evolution of the libretto and gives a synopsis, outlining the main themes of La Bohème. Edward Greenfield presents an essay on the musical structure and consistency of the opera, whose "very accessibility tends to obscure the musical genius behind the score". In this book Scheingold adds political novels to those inquiries and argues that they make a distinctive and hitherto neglected contribution to the collective memory of the 20th Century. In Muslim countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Pakistan and Malaysia, a mere 15% of those recently surveyed believed Darwin’s theory to be ‘true’ or ‘probably true’. This passionately argued book contends to the contrary: not only that evolutionary theory does not contradict core Muslim beliefs, but that many scholars adopted a worldview that accepted evolution as a given.
