Publisher's Note Welcome to winter in Steveston village! The Steveston Merchants Association just hosted another successful Girls’ Night Out; now it’s time to welcome the holiday season with the SMA’s 15th annual Christmas in Steveston Village. The fun begins on December 1 with the annual classic car cruise around the village. Join the merry crowd that converges at Fisherman’s Wharf to catch a glimpse of Santa’s boat as it motors into Steveston Harbour. Afterward, join Santa at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery where he will pose for photos (have your camera ready!). While there, shop at the Cannery Farmers’ Market and admire the creative work Steveston merchants and community groups have put into the annual Festival of Trees. View the classic cars on display in the Steveston Hotel parking lot; Richmond Christmas Fund staff will be on hand to collect donations. Other events taking place during the holidays include Christmas concerts, winter hayrides, and the Steveston Santa Claus Parade. Experience the Winter Tram or join in the singing of favourite holiday songs at Steveston Museum's Town Square Park for the first three Saturdays in December. Raised in Richmond, and a graduate of Steveston High, Rob manages the Cannery Store, rentals, and administrative functions for the Cannery Society. Our village is growing; The Roderick building is mostly complete and tenants are moving in. Scotiabank opened in early November and Save-On-Foods opened on November 22. Inside, read about Steveston’s much anticipated grocery store on page 6. Onni’s Imperial Landing development has started to lease the spaces and three new businesses are confirmed so far: The Colony, Bann Lao Thai Restaurant and Goodlife Fitness. This past summer Steveston resident Jerry Blair relocated his business Steveston Optical to the building he purchased on First Avenue. We share his story on page 26. 'Tis the season to be thankful for our authentic and relaxed small-town shopping experience, something that malls strive for but can not duplicate. Save-On-Foods Opens in Steveston Village Story by Sarah Gordon

The wait is over; Save-On-Foods opened for business on November 22, 2019! While the village is home to many shops, another grocery store has been high on the community’s wish list.
Adam Rondquist is Steveston’s Save-On-Foods manager. He is thrilled to be involved in opening and managing this location.

Adam feels particularly invested in this launch because he grew up across the river in Ladner, and is very familiar with Steveston. He worked at Save-On-Foods in Ladner when he was a student; thirty-five years later he is a senior manager who has had the good fortune
He says, “The word on the street has been extremely positive. People are excited to have a new grocery store in Steveston. We hope to draw shoppers to the village and see the other businesses benefit as well.” He is aware that winter and summer 6

There has been a lot of interest in this store, both from people curious to know when the store would open and from job applicants.
When asked what makes Steveston special, Adam replies, “Right away, it’s the fishing community. The historical connections to Atlantic Canada can be seen in the street names such as Moncton and Chatham.”
Adam mentions, ”Building relationships with a team is very important. Today’s workforce is very diverse both culturally and with a wide representation of ages. Being flexible is very significant and being adaptable is also of utmost importance. Building and picking a team is exciting; it influences a store’s culture from opening and it affects morale. I embrace change. I like new and different things.”
The store conveys a village feeling through colour choices, wainscoting, and historic elements. Adam hopes to see window paintings of fishing boats featured in the large storefront windows. December 2019 - January 2020

“The products will speak to the value of supporting local, based on seasonal availability,” Adam says. Being a 100 per cent locally owned company distinguishes Save-OnFoods from other grocery stores. Since it’s early beginnings in 1915, the company has taken pride in partnering with local producers including B.C. beef and produce farmers as close by as Delta. Save-On-Foods spotlights and promotes these producers through signage and “in-store every” campaigns. Each Save-On-Foods location is customized to give customers exactly what they want. At the Steveston store, you will find Grab and Go meal solutions such as sushi, hot wings, and restaurant offerings for today’s shoppers who have less time to spend on creating meals. Customers can also expect to find natural and healthy foods.

The store features an in-house bakery, deli and meat department. This location is the smallest Save-On-Foods at 20,000 square feet; the entrance will be on Third Avenue across from the Steveston Hotel. Save-On-Foods pharmacy is detached from the store and is situated around the corner on Moncton Street. Giving back to the community is a large part of Save-On-Foods mandate. Weight gain is almost everyone’s struggle during the Christmas season. Here are some tips that allow you to enjoy eating while not gaining too much size: 1. Avoid having carb + fat combo: Carbohydrate triggers insulin release to maintain healthy level of blood sugar. But insulin opens fat cells and converts excess carbs into fat. Having carb + fat combo is the quickest way to gain fat. 2. Have a healthy snack before the feast: Choose your healthy snack that contains protein and complex carb (fiber) and have it before a major feast will not only give you long lasting energy but also allow you to eat more moderately during the feast. 3. Drink water: Drinking water is not only to fill your stomach, water is also essential for metabolism. Drinking 1.5-2 litres of water (if medically allowed) will enable you to metabolize what you eat better.

Steveston Optical is one of the village’s newest businesses. It was originally located in central Richmond, but last summer owners Jerry and Rosanne Blair moved their shop to Steveston.
connection to Steveston; three years ago they purchased one of Richmond’s oldest farmhouses, which was constructed in 1895 and is located at London Landing.
Jerry’s connection to this community dates back to his great grandfather, William Bridge, who served as the Reeve of Richmond from 1908 to 1917. William Bridge Elementary School in Broadmoor is named in his honour.
The couple originally trained to be teachers but were unable to get work locally and did not wish to move out of town. Rosanne embarked on a career in the airline industry and Jerry entered the optical business.
He recollects his great grandfather Bridge’s farm on No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway. As a child, Jerry grew up on an adjacent property owned by his grandmother Lillian Blair who was William Bridge’s daughter. His great grandfather John Blair also had a home in Steveston in the early 1900s.
Jerry Blair’s name is familiar to many people as he has close to 30 years of experience in the optical business.
“I’ve come home to my roots.” Jerry Blair Rosanne is also a life long Richmond resident; her family has lived here since 1936. Jerry and Rosanne continue to feel a deep historical 26

Jerry comments, “I like that Steveston still has the feeling of old Richmond. There really is not a lot left of Richmond’s early days other than Steveston, and to have that in a retail setting is even better. This is one of the reasons my family bought the building that we now occupy. I like the combination of industrial fused with the new retail shops and the many restaurants that make up Steveston. I believe Steveston is Richmond’s Yaletown in the making.” He appreciates the connection to Steveston’s rich maritime heritage and that his shop is located in a building where boats were once built. Jerry says, “We enjoyed renovating and decorating the space.” He credits Rosanne for the tasteful décor, which marries industrial and nautical. The white walls, wood floors, and dark wood display cases create a timeless look.
"Customers love the shop and comment that it looks like Steveston on the inside,” he says. Steveston Optical offers prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, and sportswear.

Steveston Optical also carries a good selection of eyewear for children. If you have concerns about which glasses your child would like to wear, or more importantly, which pair of glasses will be durable, Jerry and his staff are pleased to assist. With the volume of walk-by traffic, Jerry has increased the store’s selection of sunglasses. On sunny summer days, he noticed a surge in sunglass sales, as people dropped in to purchase a pair to wear while strolling around the village, heading to an outdoor patio or walking along the dyke.

Jerry believes being a small business owner is advantageous. “We have knowledgeable staff, including Vita Chak, who has been with us long term. You don’t get the same service at the larger stores that sell glasses.” In addition to selling optical products, Steveston Optical also offers eye exams Tuesday through Saturday. Dr. Albert Schuss is a respected optometrist who many customers know, and Dr. Christine Wang has also joined the team.
