2020 has been the most challenging year The Albany Academies have faced in a long time. Managing the effects of COVID-19 has been an ongoing test of resilience and adaptive management across all areas of school operations. From my perspective, we continue to meet and exceed these challenges, and I could not be prouder of how our professional and family communities have come together during this remarkable time. From a purely financial perspective, we have incurred significant unplanned operational costs necessary to create a safe campus environment for in-person learning and to provide a high-quality remote learning experience for those students who are unable to join us on campus. Your ongoing support of The Albany Academies has a tremendous impact on our ability to do this. Over the last few years, you have played a vital part in our increased financial surety. This allowed us to face our current challenges confidently, knowing that we have your philanthropic support of our endowment, capital projects, and annual giving initiatives. This report highlights these efforts, for which we are all incredibly grateful. If you can continue this support, it will have an ongoing impact on our ability to navigate whatever the rest of 2020 and 2021 may have in store for us. DEAR DONORS TO THE ALBANY ACADEMIES,

This past year has been unlike any other in my professional career. The uncertainty and myriad of challenges we have experienced over the past eight months have been unimaginable. I am so grateful to you – our cherished donors – for your resiliency and support during these unprecedented times. You have shown us time and time again the dedication you have to the Academies and the incredible support you eagerly provide to the school you love. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your thoughtful gifts and messages of support along this journey. The funds raised during the 2019-20 fiscal year have been critical to helping defray the extraordinary costs we’ve incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Updated technology to support distance learning, widescreen televisions in all classrooms, personal protective equipment, signage, air scrubbers for high-density areas, ventilation solutions, and expanded staff for constant cleaning are just some of the expenses covered by our fundraising efforts. Tuition alone does not support these new costs, which has made the unrestricted dollars from the Annual Fund even more important. Thank you to the many parents, grandparents, alumnae, alumni, and our professional community for your commitment, both philanthropic and through volunteerism. Your advocacy and support make the Academy experience possible for our bright, exuberant students, and for generations of students to come. We simply could not accomplish what we have been able to during this pandemic without your generosity. This journey will persist in 2021 and we hope to have your support again in this academic year. A Tribute to Leslie Morgan Marvin ’61

The Albany Academies lost a treasured and loyal supporter earlier this year. Leslie Marvin AAG ’61 died on April 9, 2020 with her daughter and son by her side. Following her graduation from AAG, Leslie attended Wellesley College where she earned undergraduate and master’s degrees. She later pursued a Ph.D. in philosophy at Syracuse University, completing all but her dissertation, and later earned an MBA at Columbia University. Leslie married Pieter S. VanDerzee AA ’59 and the couple became parents of a daughter, Anne Sanford VanDerzee, and a son, Jefferson Morgan VanDerzee. When she retired in 2008, Leslie held the position of vice president and managing director of J.P. Morgan’s Private Bank. Throughout her career, she served on many boards of directors in New York City, and yet still made time to serve on the board of her beloved Albany Academy for Girls and the Albany Academies for many years. She was a valued member of the Academies’ Board of Visitors, a group of former board members and key individuals who have been instrumental in leading The Albany Academies and helping shape the school’s future. Throughout Leslie’s service to the Academies she always shared great wisdom and foresight, and was generous with her time, thought, and experience. During her lifetime, Leslie traveled the world and had tremendous intellectual curiosity. In addition to her children, Leslie is survived by her three grandchildren and her sister, Pamela Morgan Marvin, AAG ’59.

he Annual Fund supports the people and the programs that make a difference in the lives of Academy students. Tuition covers approximately 85% of annual school operations costs, with the rest coming from philanthropic support. Annual Fund donations help to close that gap. Each year we ask members of our community to support the Annual Fund and we are grateful to the current parents, alumnae, alumni, parents of alumni/ae, grandparents, professional community, and friends who choose to donate. Every gift makes a difference, and we thank you. Our Albany Academy Cadets marched for fallen soldiers and lives lost to COVID-19 despite the cancellation of the Memorial Day Parade that they have marched in for many years.

When Matthew Bender IV died in February this year, not only did The Albany Academies lose a treasured alumnus and benefactor, but the Capital Region lost one of its most ardent supporters and influential philanthropists. A graduate of the Class of 1949, Matt was a fixture at the Academies for more than six decades as a student, trustee, parent, grandparent, major donor and, most recently, co-chair of the Board of Visitors. Few people have equaled Matt’s keen insight

into what needed to be improved, here on campus or in the wider community. Our friend always had wise advice for bringing about necessary change, and his generous financial backing often made important things happen. It is not an exaggeration to suggest that without Matt’s imprimatur and bold leadership, the merger of Albany Academy for Girls and The Albany Academy would not have happened. Our success and stability in recent years is due in part to Matt’s leadership in making the merger a successful one. Matt was a very generous donor to the Academies. He contributed to several capital campaigns, including the most recent Campaign for the Third Century. He also endowed the Bender Chair of Composition, the Bender Excellence in Writing Awards, the Bender Summer Writing Program, and the Eleanor Bender Library Fund. Matt spent most of his adult life contributing his time and talent to many civic and charitable endeavors. In addition to his service to the Academies, he served in leadership positions at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany Medical College, The Center for Economic

Growth, The Greenway Conservancy for the Hudson River Valley, Historic Albany Foundation, The New York State Commission on the Restoration of the Capitol, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. As a local philanthropist and conservationist, Matt was devoted to many social and cultural causes in Albany. He was particularly proud of the support provided to the region by the Bender Family Foundation, which he founded in 1997 and led as president of the board of trustees for more than 20 years. While he was deservedly renowned for his financial support of a wide array of local and regional philanthropic concerns, what set Matt apart was his generosity of spirit. His affable personality, combined with an empathetic curiosity and interest in people and places made him an endearing and respected person to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phoebe Powell Bender; his three children, Christian ‘78, Jeffrey ‘80, and Jean ‘82; and his eight grandchildren. We are fortunate to have known him and to have benefitted from his thoughtful presence and generous spirit. We will miss Matt’s trusted advice and his many visits to the school. The impact of his continuous, personal interactions with The Albany Academies over the course of 70 years, and his guidance and support, will be felt for many years to come.

A Tribute to Robert L. Gifford 40

The Albany Academies was pleased to announce in February of 2020 a $3 million legacy gift received from a former student. The bequest, one of the largest legacy gifts the schools have ever received, came from Robert L. Gifford, who died in 2018 at his home in Sarasota, Fla. Bob was born in Troy and graduated from The Albany Academy in 1940. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at Harvard University and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. After completing his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served the country for 30 years, ending his Navy career as a captain. “Bob Gifford traveled the world throughout his career and during

his retirement, visiting more than 40 countries, but he never forgot his roots here in the Capital Region and all he gained as an Albany Academy student,” said Christopher Lauricella, head of school. “His love of this school and all it did to help him lead a successful and interesting life is evident in his extremely generous gift to the school. Our current and future students will benefit greatly from his gift and we are extremely grateful.” Bob’s sister-in-law, Peg Gifford, who resides in Ballston Spa, remembered his fondness for The Albany Academy. “Bob’s gift came as no surprise as he often reflected on the impact of his time at Albany Academy.He spoke fondly of the experience and the foundation it gave him for building such a fulfilling life,” she said.

“It was clear to Bob early on in life that he wanted to give back so that others could experience full lives after receiving the foundation of an Albany Academies education. I am very pleased to know he will live on through this gift.” A portion of the gift is being directed toward the newly created Gifford Faculty Innovation Awards, which will present awards annually to faculty members to help them bring new and innovative teaching ideas into the classroom. The Gifford legacy gift also will be used to support professional development programs and training for the Academies’ faculty. In addition, $1 million of the bequest will be dedicated to ongoing capital improvements on the campus.
