Dear Symphony Friends, It’s true. Every single day, I wake up energized and excited about new ways we can make a difference in our community. And it all starts with asking the question WHY – Why do people turn to a world-class orchestra like Palm Beach Symphony to enrich their lives?

The answers are varied and many. From the business owner who understands the power of cultural and community enrichment, to the teacher determined to paint a bright future for her students by bringing professional Palm Beach Symphony musicians into the classroom to mentor the next generation of symphony stars, to the philanthropist who longs to leave a legacy of classical music, to the major-league baseball player who slips into a Palm Beach Symphony masterworks concert to recharge during a break in spring training, to the teenage guitarist who was moved to tears upon accepting a PBS-donated guitar to replace the one left behind when he fled Puerto Rico ahead of Hurricane Maria …. these are the true stories behind just a few of the many people whose lives we’ve impacted this season.

And they’re the stories that motivate and inspire our talented musicians, our loyal Symphony members, our strong supportive board and staff, our dedicated committee members, and our incredible volunteers. As for the WHY’s that brought all of us together, they’re the same as the WHY’s of the business owner, the philanthropist, the teacher, the baseball player, and the teenager. At some point in all of these individuals’ lives, they were touched by music.

Classical music brings meaning and vitality to our lives in ways we’re only beginning to understand. It’s the mission of Palm Beach Symphony to fuel that vitality by engaging, educating, and entertaining the community through live performances of inspiring orchestral music.

Palm Beach Symphony was founded in 1974 as the first professional orchestra in Palm Beach County and, in its earliest years, performed only a few concerts per season with a part-time conductor and a volunteer staff.

Now in its 45th season and under the leadership of Executive Director David McClymont, Palm Beach Symphony has grown into a world-class orchestra with an expanded mission that includes carefully crafted education and community outreach initiatives that bring live classical

music programs and concerts into schools, community centers, and public venues in and around the Palm Beaches.

Palm Beach Symphony is known for its lively and inspiring masterworks series and has recently introduced a chamber music series, which includes an educational offshoot called Chamber Chats. These chamber concerts pair music with enlightening commentary by local musicians, historians, and scholars, and are designed for students of all ages who appreciate “music for the mind.”

Masterworks and chamber music concerts are performed in historically significant venues and culturally important concert halls, including the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, The Society of the Four Arts, the Norton Museum of Art, The Breakers Palm Beach, the Harriet Himmel Theater, and Benjamin Hall.

The Symphony’s full calendar of social events includes fine dining experiences on concert evenings, celebratory cocktail receptions to open and close the season, and an annual sunset dinner cruise. These events allow symphony members to share their love of classical music in settings that promote cultural camaraderie and tighten the bond between the Symphony and its member-supporters.

Up-and-coming Symphony members take part in Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony social events with purpose. As ambassadors of Palm Beach Symphony’s music education initiative, this group of young professionals and community influencers enjoy Symphony concerts, mixers, sip-and-shops, and events.

Exposure to classical music provides valuable learning and developmental benefits to children and promotes healthy communities for people of all ages.

Palm Beach Symphony strives to reach more corners of the community with expanded programming. The Symphony’s 45th anniversary season will be a celebration of classical music’s rich tradition paired with a promise to expand upon new and exciting public offerings that ensure all members of the community are exposed to live orchestral music and motivated to keep it alive for many generations to come.

The Symphony continues to expand its community outreach offerings with the goal of enriching lives across all walks of life regardless of age, background, or income. In Season 44, we doubled the number of free public offerings presented in the previous season.

ANNUAL FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT This popular waterfront performance connects the community with classical music in a stunning outdoor setting. Palm Beach Symphony partners with the West Palm Beach Arts & Entertainment District to present an afternoon of the arts that features a full masterworks concert along West Palm Beach’s stunning waterfront at the Meyer Amphitheatre. This year, families and friends once again brought blankets and picnic baskets and secured their spots on the lawn for this free outdoor concert led by Maestro Ramón Tebar with special guest, Broadway veteran Avery Sommers. This family-friendly event was presented for the third consecutive year FREE and open to the public.

Research tells us classical music has the unique ability to help develop minds from the earliest years. It promotes language and learning, boosts concentration, develops discipline, and builds social skills, among other important benefits.

Palm Beach Symphony’s music education program sends professional musicians into Palm Beach County classrooms to conduct coaching sessions, lecture demos, and masterclasses. In addition, they participate in side-by-sides, where young musicians have the unique opportunity to play alongside their professional musician mentors.

STEAM NIGHTS

Technique, tone, posture, and proper instrument position are taught in small group settings with professional instrument instructors. Later, students come together in large groups to work on ensemble balance rehearsing alongside Symphony musicians.

These individual workshops by master musicians give students an opportunity to perform a prepared piece for expert feedback on areas for improvement, including musical technique, style, interpretative qualities, presentation, and overall musicality.

The Symphony puts the A (Art) in STEAM Nights multiple times throughout the year by infusing science with music in this interactive learning collaboration with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, presented throughout the school year in various Palm Beach County public schools.

LECTURE DEMONSTRATIONS Students benefit from these engaging, informative, interactive demos as Symphony musicians perform select pieces and speak about the instrument, the composer, and life as a professional musician.

SIDE-BY-SIDE PERFORMANCES Advanced students get to perform next to Symphony musicians. The opportunity to play their instruments side-by-side with professional musicians provides students with an unforgettable performance experience and experiential learning they can later apply to their own professional growth.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES Student musicians and schools are given opportunities to perform prior to Palm Beach Symphony masterworks concerts or other Symphony special events to showcase their musical groups.

Ballet East, Palm Beach Symphony performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf

Children’s Concert Series The Symphony engages children in a fun and informative musical experience with one of the most internationally recognized pieces of music: Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Through a collaboration with Ballet East, Palm Beach Symphony brings this classic tale to life with orchestral music, dance, costumes, and interactive audience participation.

Different instruments are used to “voice” each character – a boy named Peter (strings), a lovable duck (oboe), an impatient bird (flute), an adventurous cat (clarinet), a grumpy grandfather (bassoon), and a scary wolf (French horn), providing children with a foundational knowledge of the differences in instrument timbre (quality of musical sound).

In Season 44, more than 4,500 Palm Beach County students attended free of charge 7 performances of this unique symphony-ballet production of Peter and the Wolf through Palm Beach Symphony’s Children’s Concert Series.

Included for the first time was a public performance of this spectacular children’s concert. Children were able to share the experience with their families at a performance in Belle Glade, Florida. The show was opened for public attendance at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center, a co-sponsor of the event.

INSTRUMENT DONATION This season, Palm Beach Symphony presented more than 30 refurbished instruments – donated by members of the community – to music students and school music programs throughout Palm Beach County.

Gabriel’s Story Gabriel Morales, 15, fled Puerto Rico with his family on September 19, 2017 to escape the threat of Hurricane Maria, which hit the island the next day. The family of five had to leave everything – including Gabriel’s guitar – when they packed in haste to make the last flight off of the island and on to their new life in South Florida.

Gabriel had been enrolled in the Pablo Casals School of Fine Art in Puerto Rico and was able to continue his arts education at Dreyfoos School of the Arts in Palm Beach County. He adjusted well according to his teachers, but Gabriel missed playing and composing on his guitar, an activity he’d always found soothing in times of stress.

Celebrate! Five young musicians were invited to attend Palm Beach Symphony’s Holly Jolly Symphony Fête where the Ladies Guild presented them with donated instruments.

Surprise! Dozens more instruments were presented to students in their music classes and band rehearsals when Palm Beach Symphony made surprise visits to their schools, arranged with help from their dedicated music teachers and band directors.

When the staff at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation, which raises funds to support the arts and academic curriculum at the arts school, learned of Gabriel’s loss, they contacted Palm Beach Symphony.

Through its Instrument Donation Program, the Symphony arranged to give Gabriel a newly reconditioned guitar, which was presented by Executive Director David McClymont on the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Campus in November 2017.

PLAYING STILL: THE DEAN OF AFRO-AMERICAN COMPOSERS

CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES New in Season 44 Palm Beach Symphony debuted a lively chamber music series enhanced by enlightening narration by local musicians, historians, and scholars. Audiences were thrilled with this new offering, which has spawned an additional initiative called Chamber Chats, informative and engaging chamber music programs that both entertain and stimulate the mind.

Narrated by scholar and music educator, Dr. Rufus Jones, Jr., this lively string quartet performance spun a rich tapestry of African-American music history, shining a spotlight on the music of William Grant Still, the first black composer to have a work performed by a major American orchestra and the first to conduct a leading American orchestra. Audiences experienced Still’s evolution as a composer through his uniquely rich string quartets.

TREASURES FROM THE SPANISH PROVIDENCIA

BERNSTEIN & CO: COMPOSED IN AMERICA

Spanish-inspired music was at the heart and soul of this chamber performance featuring tales of Spanish sailors, a legendary shipwreck, and the discovery of treasure in the form of coconuts! Palm Beach Symphony’s string quartet (and guitar quintet) concert took audiences on a musical journey back to Old Florida and the Spanish influence that gave root to so much of the state’s history. Through a unique multi-media-infused musical experience, concert attendees got to “ride along” on a video tour of Palm Beach with fifth generation Floridian, Harvey E. Oyer, III, as guest host and historical guide.

Through Oyer’s video narration, viewers learn about the shipwreck of a 175ton Spanish brig called Providencia, the treasures it brought to our shores, and the community it helped build.

Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony hosted this celebration of the centennial of Leonard Bernstein’s birth. Narrated by the always-charismatic Albert-George Schram, the brass quintet played a vibrant selection of pieces by Bernstein and other great American composers, including Henry Mancini, Marvin Hamlisch, Scott Joplin, and John Philip Sousa.

One of the highlights of Palm Beach Symphony’s 44th Season was welcoming Major League Baseball star Paul DeJong to the Symphony family. This powerhouse athlete with a soft spot in his heart for classical music was happy to discover Palm Beach Symphony during his stay in South Florida (for Spring Training at Roger Dean Stadium), and he wasted no time in signing on to the Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony networking group that supports the efforts of the Symphony’s music education initiatives.

DeJong attended several concerts and events throughout Season 44, but the “fan favorite” has to be his appearance on Gala Night when he and Maestro Tebar exchanged bat-for-baton along with mutual admiration for each other’s extraordinary talents.

The ability to expand world-class music, high-quality programming, exquisite social events, vital music education programs, and free community outreach events each season is made possible thanks to the ongoing support and efforts of the Symphony’s loyal donors and sponsors.

SYMPHONY OF TREASURES GALA Palm Beach Symphony held its 16th annual gala, Symphony of Treasures, at The Breakers Palm Beach. The elegant multi-event affair was attended by 250 guests and raised $675,000, a new fundraising record for the Symphony, thanks in part to a matching grant challenge and an Auction of Unique Experiences, which included a Barcelona Experience – VIP tickets and backstage passes to see Plácido Domingo and Ramón Tebar at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Spain!

YOUNG FRIENDS OF PALM BEACH SYMPHONY YFPBS brings together young professionals and Symphony enthusiasts with the shared objective of supporting Palm Beach Symphony’s education initiatives. These community influencers enjoy 6 exclusive events each year at hot spots like The Breakers, Vineyard Vines, Royal Poinciana Plaza, and International Polo Club. More than 80 Young Friends attended this year’s gala-night party at the Breakers, where they raised $8,000 to help fund Palm Beach Symphony’s music education program.

HOLLY JOLLY SYMPHONY FÊTE The Palm Beach Symphony Ladies Guild Luncheon Committee hosted 240 guests at their second annual holiday luncheon, The Holly Jolly Symphony Fête, at The Beach Club in Palm Beach in December 2017.

This year’s event raised more than $50,000 (up 65% over last year) for the Symphony, including $4,100 from Gucci Worth Avenue. Paul and Sandra Goldner were honored by the Symphony for their support of the Symphony’s music education initiatives through The Paul & Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Music, and Edrick Rhodes, Palm Beach County School District K-12 Arts Education Program Director, joined David McClymont in presenting 5 instruments to deserving music students nominated and selected as beneficiaries of the Palm Beach Symphony Instrument Donation Program. Guests enjoyed a performance by a Palm Beach Symphony brass quintet and pre-event holiday music by The King’s Academy Conservatory Honors Choir and a Jupiter High School string quartet that serenaded silent bidders as they browsed nearly 200 auction items.

On concert evenings, Symphony members enjoy exclusive preand post-performance dining experiences where they talk about the music and its meaning in their lives. (At the pre-concert performance, 3 donations were made to local students and music teachers who were invited to attend the dinner with a guest.) In addition to concert- night dinners, the Symphony hosts a number of popular members-only events throughout the season, including a Season Opening Cocktail Reception, a Sunset Dinner Cruise, and a Season-Ending Cocktail Affair attended by Symphony musicians and staff.

JANUARY 2018 James R. Borynack and Adolfo Zaralegui hosted a Gala Kick-Off Party at Findlay Galleries in honor of the Palm Beach Symphony 2018 Symphony of Treasures Gala. More than 80 guests who attended in support of the Symphony were treated to a private preview art exhibition.

MARCH 2018 Palm Beach Symphony presented a Planned Giving Lunch & Learn sponsored

by Manley Thaler and BNY Mellon Wealth Management. The 40 invited guests were treated to a music performance along with an elegant lunch at The Beach Club and partook in an engaging and interactive estate planning session.

APRIL 2018 A private gathering of 75 Palm Beach Symphony members enjoyed an elegant dinner at the Manalapan home of philanthropist Lois Pope. Ms. Pope hosted the “Lavish Evening on the Island” on behalf of the Symphony as part of its 16th Annual Gala Auction of Unique Experiences, which raised more than $30,000.

Financial Overview

Palm Beach Symphony holds itself to high standards of financial management and transparency and operates efficiently for the interest of our community.

The Symphony’s audited financial statements for 2016-2017 and the two prior years are summarized to the right. The Symphony worked closely with independent auditors, Caler, Donten, Levine, Cohen, Porter & Veil, P.A., to ensure accurate financial information is available to Symphony members and to the public.

Palm Beach Symphony finished its 2016-2017 season with its second consecutive year in the black, exceeding fundraising goals and replenishing its endowment.
