Letter from the Chief Executive Officer

Dear Symphony Friends, On a December afternoon bursting with endless opportunities, more than double the number of subscribers from the prior year and those lucky enough to secure much sought-after tickets eagerly took their seats at the Kravis Center as our renowned new Music Director Gerard Schwarz led a soaring Palm Beach Symphony Premiere of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony to thunderous applause. Then, on a glamorous and glorious night in February, with the support of generous patrons, our annual gala raised nearly $1 million – nearly 40 times more than what was accomplished just five years ago! In season 46, we asked patrons to “Dare to Dream,” and together we created a landmark season that surpassed goals, broke records, innovated programs, challenged the status quo, and underscored our strong and indelible role in our community. A season of profound collaboration began when we were joined by 127 voices from Palm Beach Atlantic University Oratorio Chorus, The Choral Society of the Palm Beaches and The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches in a breathtaking performance of “Ode to Joy.” Thousands of students were inspired by our interactive children’s concert production and pre- and post-concert workshops that we created in partnership with the Demetrius Klein Dance Company and teaching artists from the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Together we sparked imaginations using music to build a bridge to science and enhance learning.

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties enabled the Symphony to reach greater corners of the community through our new Nurturing Notes outreach initiative to seniors, veterans, at-risk children, and individuals with mental health needs. As the COVID-19 pandemic caused an early end to our season and paused all in-person programs, we quickly adapted and created educational videos with musicians and united with Palm Beach Opera, Ballet Palm Beach and The Maltz Jupiter Theatre for the first time to show the world that even during the pandemic the arts encourage hope with “One Voice.” Barry Manilow, who wrote that song, is so supportive of the Symphony’s community outreach that he shared the video with his 4.4 million followers on Facebook. We are planning more outstanding collaborations in the future including with many of today’s top artists who are eager to perform with Maestro Schwarz again as they have in some of the world’s top concert halls. We look forward to the day we welcome you back to the Kravis Center for must-see programs including numerous planned Palm Beach Symphony premieres. Without the combined strength and dedication of our staff, board, musicians, volunteers, and patrons, none of this would be possible. This impact report details the power of your patronage and generosity which enables Palm Beach Symphony to maintain and develop a strong financial foundation and work to realize your vision for a vibrant and caring community. With gratitude,

David McClymont

Beyond History Towards a Dream

Founded in 1974 Palm Beach Symphony was built on the dream of sharing inspiring orchestral music with our community. Coming from humble beginnings with a few concerts per season at small venues, a modest-sized orchestra, part time-conductor, and volunteer staff, this professional orchestra, the first in Palm Beach County, was still a daring success. Under the direction of board chair Ethel S. Stone, big plans for Palm Beach Symphony were being made to move the organization forward into larger performance spaces, innovating the organization for the better. Unfortunately, Mrs. Stone never had the opportunity to see this become a reality, but her legacy, love of music, and dreams for the Symphony she dedicated 23 years continued forward.

A Dream Into a Reality Through the combined efforts and dedication of generous patrons, a stable board, and an expanding administrative staff, Palm Beach Symphony grew into a world-class orchestra that now performs in the largest venue in Palm Beach County, with capacity over 2,000 seats; a 300% increase from what Mrs. Stone planned initially. Innovation and transformation have become part of the history and tradition at Palm Beach Symphony. We continue to improve and expand upon how we serve our mission to the community even beyond our celebrated Masterworks Concert series. In season 46, under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer David McClymont, we dared to go into new realms with our vital music education and community outreach programs and introduce new initiatives. All of our efforts help advance our mission and realize the first dream at Palm Beach Symphony – sharing inspiring music with our community.

“ The video is the brainchild of symphony CEO David McClymont...Simply posting a video of

a symphony performance didn’t excite him. ‘I wanted to figure out how to take it to another level.’ ” – Palm Beach Daily News on “One Voice” Collaboration

Daring Feats And Response Each season, Palm Beach Symphony dares to surpass previous seasons, to move forward, create higher standards of excellence, and maximize impact. This approach, shared by all board members, staff, and volunteers, has led to an overall reach - of individuals from all ages, backgrounds, and life experiences that has exceeded previous seasons and an attendance rate at concerts and events that we haven’t seen higher in the last five years. We are only able to accomplish such tremendous feats due to outstanding patronage, which has allowed us to operate in the black for the past five seasons. The challenges presented by COVID-19 created a trial for everyone. Because of our financial security and patrons/partners who believed in our mission, Palm Beach Symphony continued to stand strong and adapted to the situation in order to execute its mission in new ways during “Safer at Home” orders. In a leading role, Palm Beach Symphony rallied three of the other area’s top arts organizations – the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Opera, and Ballet Palm Beach – to record an online performance of Barry Manilow’s “One Voice,” in partnership with the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County.

Dreams For The Future Even while accomplishing major breakthroughs and innovations, CEO David McClymont and Music Director Gerard Schwarz continued to dream big for Palm Beach Symphony and its future. In the summer of 2019, plans were announced that all Masterworks series concerts would be performed at the Kravis Center’s Dreyfoos Hall, ending our long history of migrating from venue to venue. With plans for bringing superstar performances to the 2020-21 season, we’re continuing to build a symphony worthy of this significant performing arts venue.

More than 62,000 impacted in 2019-20 85% average attendance rate More than 100% increase in revenue from five years ago

Donor Story Lurana Figueroa is a long-standing patron of twelve years. Initially, Lurana, along with her husband, became a member when the audience was much smaller. As the years went by, they observed and noticed the continued growth, the larger audiences, and the expanded orchestra. One of Lurana’s dreams is to see Palm Beach Symphony gain international recognition, “Today the PBS proudly sits among the finest orchestras in the country.”

“ The last few seasons we have seen the Palm Beach Symphony explode with enthusiastic fans. ” – Lurana Figueroa

For more than five years, Palm Beach Symphony has made its community outreach activities a cornerstone of its yearly efforts. Going into undiscovered realms, forging new partnerships, reaching untapped corners of the community with inspiring music, and moving forward beyond the concert hall all serve to improve how we connect with audiences and Palm Beach County’s broad and diverse population. During the 2019-20 season, Palm Beach Symphony served mini-concerts on the streets, at ballparks, and more. These are held in addition to our regular series and range in size and location. • Quintet performs at Brightline West Palm Beach welcoming Superbowl guests

“ As a South Florida artistic powerhouse for almost half-a-century, Palm Beach Symphony has demonstrated its profound impact on our community. ” – Gerard Schwarz

Beyond concerts, we are now venturing into unique realms with classical music and how it can help address physical, social, and emotional needs like pain, stress, isolation, and depression. Through Nurturing Notes, Palm Beach Symphony partners with Creative Arts Therapies of the Palm Beaches (CATPB) to help vulnerable and isolated populations in our community. Symphony musicians are paired with a certified music therapist from CATPB who develop interactive performances that include movement, song-writing, lyric analysis, emotional expression, and active music-making. Funding from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties support bi-monthly Nurturing Notes sessions at Quantum House and Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Advancements Through Partnerships and New Programs As a dedicated member of the community for 46 years, Palm Beach Symphony is dedicated to collaboration and synergy. It’s a part of our values and cultural belief. It’s the reason why we develop so many partnerships in the community - achieving growth internally and being part of the more significant expansion in the Palm Beaches. We forged many new professional, artistic, educational, and collaborative partnerships in 2019-20 to expand our connection to the community, work toward a shared vision, and create unity to show solidarity and strength.

New Partnerships and Collaborations in 2019-20 • The Colony Palm Beach became the official hotel for Palm Beach Symphony • Palm Beach Hedge Fund Association and Palm Beach Symphony developed a partnership to create opportunities for members • Neiman Marcus held a private fashion show with Palm Beach Symphony musicians setting the tone • Palm Beach Symphony shared the stage with Palm Beach Atlantic University Oratorio Chorus, The Choral Society of the Palm Beaches, and the Masterworks Chorus for a performance of Beethoven’s 9th • Collaborated with Demetrius Klein Dance Company for One Small Step performances and workshops • Collaborated with South Florida Science Center for One Small Step science workshops • Puppetry Network created the star of One Small Step • Partnered with School District of Palm Beach County to present Percussion Workshop to all secondary music teachers • Collaborated with Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Opera, and Ballet Palm Beach for “One Voice”

Staying Connected Music is known to invigorate a community’s vitality; it helps communities weather difficult times and emerge with renewed strength, purpose, and resiliency. During COVID-19 Safer at Home orders, we were committed to sustaining the note, as it was critical to continue providing uplifting content to shine a light through the darkness. In addition to our “One Voice” collaboration, which started it all, we began a new online series LIVE! From Your Living Room, sharing instructional videos by Palm Beach Symphony musicians, performances by Symphony patrons, and free online music resources, including archival video footage from our Music Director Gerard Schwarz. Continuing Nurturing Notes sessions and presenting the 2020 Randolph A. Frank Prize for Performing Arts award was too important to postpone or cancel, especially during this time. Through innovation and technology, we moved into virtual spaces to continue these vital community outreach initiatives.

Daring To Innovate During the 2019-20 season, Palm Beach Symphony made innovations to its music education program to provide opportunities for students to hear professional musicians playing at a high level and creating connections between music and science. Through support from the Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Music, which includes a matching grant along with corporate sponsors and individual gifts, we were able to create these transformations and many of our programs that provide music experiences for students and school music programs free of charge.

Palm Beach Symphony widened its performance in-schools by presenting ten small ensemble educational concerts for over 1,000 middle and high school students throughout Palm Beach County.

Impact Report 2020

Children’s Concert Series It was full STEAM ahead at the start of the 2019-20 school year as we presented our first-ever in-house interactive children’s concert production One Small Step. The innovations expanded upon previous seasons’ series. They involved a dynamic collaborative team, a careful interweaving of science standards with national core arts standards, participation from many groups, and a large undertaking of creative elements. In collaboration with the Demetrius Klein Dance Company and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, Palm Beach Symphony created a comprehensive experience for students that combined orchestral music with narration, dance, and scientific concepts such as the Earth’s rotation, gravity, and telescope viewing to celebrate the first lunar landing. The program for the six free performances featured works by Aaron Copland, John Williams and Joan Tower alongside creative dance by Demetrius Klein Dance Company. These thrilling works lead the adventure of Rocky de Luna, an inquisitive moon rock and hero of the story, as she hitches a ride with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo 11 lunar module en route back to planet Earth. In addition to the performances, fourth-grade students from 15 different classes had the opportunity to heighten their experience through four pre and post-concert workshops. Students participated in two Music and Dance workshops instructed by Symphony musicians and a teaching artist from Demetrius Klein Dance Company, as well as two science workshops instructed by the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.

Sustaining The Note 48 videos created by symphony musicians providing students with music instruction for 12 orchestral instruments In order to continue our music education programs while schools were adapting to remote instruction, Palm Beach Symphony added new online music education resources that included instructional videos, fun adventures for students, links to free online music activities and performances provided by partner organizations, as well as music teacher resources.

Welcoming Gerard Schwarz In the 2019-20 season, we welcomed our new Music Director Gerard Schwarz, succeeding Ramón Tebar, who held the position since 2009. In his inaugural year, Gerard Schwarz programmed nearly the entire season (in just a few weeks!), triumphed in Beethoven’s 9th with the opening Masterworks concert, hosted the first of the new lunch-and-learn series (Symphony Sessions), and programmed the 2020-21 season earlier than ever before giving guests at the 18th Annual Gala a special preview of what was to come. And the public responded positively and enthusiastically to the appointment of Maestro Gerard Schwarz, coming in higher numbers than previous seasons.

A Season That Dared To Be Different Palm Beach Symphony’s 2019-20 season ushered in a new era of orchestral music that featured celebrated musicians, saluted women as composers, provided educational opportunities to learn about musicians and the concert programs, explored multimedia formats, and paid homage to the works of legendary composers.

Donor Story Peter Gottsegen was new to the Palm Beach Symphony audience this season. Peter’s first observations included the monumental Beethoven’s Ninth and the first Symphony Sessions. As a follower of Maestro Schwarz before becoming our Music Director, Peter was especially interested in hearing what the Maestro had to say about the program. “Nobody is better at explaining the technical aspects of a piece than Jerry,” said Peter. “I think Jerry will help the audience broaden their musical knowledge. He knows what he’s doing.”

DeLuca Foundation, Publix Super Market Charities, and Mr. William Robertson. Due to their generosity, we were able to double our efforts in music education in 2019-20.

Special Events Members, corporate sponsors, major donors, and distinguished guests come together to enjoy exclusive events throughout the season which are occasionally attended by orchestra musicians, guest artists, and the Music Director.

The Fourth Annual Holly Jolly Symphony Fête Through the combined efforts of the Palm Beach Symphony Ladies Guild, Holly Jolly Host Committee, and Music Men, the Holly Jolly Symphony Fête fourth annual luncheon was a sold-out affair at the Beach Club Palm Beach. Not only did the event break an attendance record, but it also surpassed fundraising by raising more than $200,000. Guest enjoyed an extensive silent auction, a luxurious raffle, holiday music by a Palm Beach Symphony brass quintet, holiday carols from the Jupiter Middle School Choir, music by a Lake Worth High School woodwind quintet, and presentation by CBS12 news anchor Liz Quirantes who returned for her fourth year as emcee. In addition, we shared the gift of music with nine music students who were awarded through our Instrument Donation program and honored the second year of the Instrumental Music Teacher of the Year Award.

18th Annual Gala The Magic of Music Palm Beach Symphony hosted its 18th Annual Black-Tie Gala at The Breakers Palm Beach. More than 300 patrons attended this special evening, which raised nearly $1 million. Guests were treated to a unique exclusive live auction featuring items such as private NetJets flight hours, a private luxurious dinner, and tickets to a movie premiere with Bradley Cooper. Guests were also treated to a special preview of the 2020-21 season and a performance from the Lisa Bruna B-Major Award Winner.

Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony Young professionals and music enthusiasts enjoy dynamic socials and engaging networking opportunities to support Palm Beach Symphony’s impactful education and outreach programs. With nearly 100 members, this group continues expanding each year with events at The Colony Palm Beach, The Kravis Center, The International Polo Club, Hindman Auctioneers, The Breakers Palm Beach, LaunchPad Collective, and a private West Palm Beach residence.

Donor Story The Holly Jolly Symphony “Fête has become a Christmas

tradition, like no other event in South Florida. It’s a one-of-a-kind event that shares the gift of music with children by awarding them their very own instruments. It’s always an emotional experience for us to see first-hand how this event makes a difference in the lives of these deserving students. Patrons must see where their dollars are going, and Holly Jolly is one of the events that do it right. The Holly Jolly is spectacular, and as upcoming chairs and long-standing volunteers, we look forward to making the event even more interactive for guests.
