HOW DO I ANNOUNCE THAT I’M LEAVING? Having decided to start a new professional project, a new question arises - how to transmit to your superior that you are leaving! This communication is not always easy to manage. Usually, we predict a reaction marked by disappointment or even anger, which makes it not always easy to be put into practice. In these situations the most important thing is to keep in mind that these manifestations are due to the fact that you were important in a professional organization, and that you contributed to its success. We suggest some ways to communicate your exit:
COMMUNICATE IN PERSON If you are going to resign in person, we advise you to prepare in advance and think about what to say. Focus on the reasons for your departure (keeping a list) and go to a direct conversation. Avoid entangling yourself in a process of negotiation. Rather than stating the less positive aspects of your professional experience, it is important to focus only on issues that you take from this positive experience. If so, we advise that you also transmit your gratitude. Maintain a calm and professional posture. It would not be constructive to engage in an adversarial and emotional conversation. This attitude will only negatively affect the other party. Make a commitment to your supervisor to ensure the transmission of information to the team related to your leaving in a peaceful and structured way, without prejudice to the operation of your department / area.
COMMUNICATE IN WRITING If you are going to resign in writing, we advise you to prepare in advance and gather all the information you consider important. It is also important to include in the letter your name, the date and the corresponding period of retrenchment. Rather than stating the less positive aspects of your professional experience, it is important to focus only on issues that you take from this positive experience. If so, we advise that you also transmit your gratitude. If your exit has to do mainly with dissatisfaction, we recommend that you do not make any allusion to the subject in the letter. If you do, it will only make your exit more complex.
EXIT INTERVIEW Although it may seem tempting to take this opportunity to give voice to the displeasure you feel, try to maintain a professional posture. Do not get into details or even more particular or personal comments.
AND, HOW TO REACT IF A “COUNTEROFFER” WAS PRESENTED TO YOU? If your supervisor tries to keep you in the organization, offering you a promotion and / or a salary increase, despite being flattered, you should think through the following questions: If my value matches this, why wasn’t this offered before? Any credible organization should recognize and reward talent and promote accordingly. After the announcement of my departure, will people continue to look at me the same way? By communicating your resignation, you’re simply saying that you’re not fully committed to the company. If you accept the counteroffer and stay, you will probably discover later that your prospects for career development are limited.
