J-Camp’s management team carefully selects all summer staff. Pre-interview essays determine candidates’ outlooks, experience and intentions. Group interviews determine past experience with youth, leadership skills and general personality traits, while individual interviews identify critical thinking abilities, supervision aptitude and problem-solving skills. Finally, candidates receive background checks and undergo multiple reference checks.

Before camp starts, counselors train for over 35 hours and unit leaders complete over 55 hours of training.

Deposits are now only $50 to reserve your spot in any camp. Your final balance is due according to our payment schedule on page 17.

For Campers Entering Grades 1—6 Archery Grades 4–6 | $350/$390 | Session 7: July 15–19 | Join Palomo Archery and National Field Archery Association certified instructors for a fun-filled week. With steady hands and straight aim, young archers learn about equipment, shoot targets and balloons and participate in archery-based crafts. Animal Adventure Grades 1–3 | $395/$435 | Session 6: July 8–12 | In this wildlife adventure, we introduce your child to members of the animal kingdom at places like the San Francisco Zoo, Aquarium of the Bay, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, a petting zoo and a wildlife rescue center. This camp provides the perfect balance between learning and exciting interaction with animals.

Awesome Engineering: Automotive Grades 1–3 | $415/$455 | Session 4: June 24–28 | Campers learn fundamental engineering and construction concepts and build model automotive vehicles that you see every day including cars, motorcycles, bulldozers, dump trucks and more. Some of the concepts covered are gear systems, gear ratios, torque versus speed, belt and pulley systems, gravity and friction. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits.

Awesome Engineering: Aviation Grades 4–6 | $415/$455 | Session 6: July 8–12 | Campers build model structures like airplanes, helicopters, chairlifts, skyscrapers, bridges, houses and more. Concepts covered include truss systems, suspension systems, gear systems, structural significance, failure analysis, gravity and friction. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits.

Basketball Basics Grades 1–3 | $305/$345 | Session 3: June 17–June 21 | In this slam-dunk camp, your child works on developing basic basketball skills with adjustable hoops to accommodate all ages and abilities. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits. The week ends with a kosher hot dog BBQ.

Basketball: Intermediate Grades 1–3 | $315/$355 | Session 6: July 8–12 | Campers develop more advanced basketball skills in this camp using adjustable hoops to accommodate all ages and abilities. The week ends with a tournament in the Seiler Family Gymnasium where parents can cheer on their campers followed by a team lunch. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits.

Basketball Tournament Grades 4–6 | $315/$355 | Session 8: July 22–26 | Campers practice dribbling, passing, shooting and defense. At the end of each day, they play a game putting their skills to good use. We’ll end the week with a round-robin basketball tournament in the Seiler Family Gymnasium where campers will play two games followed by a team lunch. Parents are invited to cheer on their campers at the tournament. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits.

Beginning Surf Grades 4–6 | $515/$555 | Session 3: June 17–June 21 | Ride the waves! This camp is designed for first-time or beginner surfers and campers who love the water. Activities include surfing, body boarding, body surfing and other water games. Surfboards and wetsuits are provided. Campers may be required to share body boards and are encouraged to bring their own. In addition to our regular camp ratios, one surf instructor is provided to every four campers while in the water. Some staff are certified lifeguards and all staff are experienced around the waterfront. Campers must be able to swim. Additional waiver required.

Black Light Theater: Glee Style Grades 4–6 | $370/$410 | Session 5: July 1–5* | This camp is for every child interested in theater, whether they like being the center of attention or are more comfortable behind the scenes. Campers build and present a puppet show, working with puppet specialists to make their own black light puppets. Plus, campers work together to star in some of the hottest song renditions of today and yesterday—black light glee club style!

This practical, productive and rewarding camp is for kids who like working with their hands. Expert instructors from Kids Carpentry bring their woodshop classroom for a week of sawing, sanding, drilling and nailing using safe and effective hand tools. Campers also have the opportunity to visit home improvement stores for tours and special projects. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits. Wood, tools and safety glasses are provided. Campers must wear closed-toe shoes daily. Due to the nature of this program, space is limited. Additional waiver required.

Builders Camp Grades 1–3 | $395/$435 | Session 3: June 17–June 21 | Grades 4–6 | $395/$435 | Session 3: June 17–June 21 | Taught by AWESOMEngineering, campers explore construction concepts for three hours each day using Erector® sets, belt and pulley systems, gravity, friction and truss systems. Campers complete projects such as bridges and cars and receive an Erector® set to keep. Join the ultimate summer adventure! Camp Exploration is a great opportunity for your child to see what the Bay Area has to offer. Age-appropriate field trips provide campers with new experiences and lasting friendships. Some destinations change each session and include locations like Great America, Dave & Busters, Golfland, Boomers and bowling.

With the professionals at 888 Monkeys, you’ll feel comfortable letting your kids run away to join the circus! Campers improve their clowning skills and learn to walk the tight wire, juggle, ride a fun-cycle, balance on a giant ball and spin plates. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits. All levels are welcome. Additional waiver required.

Circus of the Stars

Grades 4–6 | $390/$430 | Session 2: June 10–14 | Beat the heat with J-Camp! Campers travel to splashtastic places Raging Waters, Waterworld USA, Golfland, Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Aqua Adventure. Campers must wear closed-toe shoes for time spent on shore and must be able to swim in order to participate.

Ceramics Grades 1–3 | $400/$440 | Session 3: June 17–June 21 |

After painting masterpieces at Petroglyph and Create It Ceramics, campers get down and dirty with clay using the pinch, coil and slab building methods. Their decorated and glazed projects are then fired in a kiln. Campers should wear clothes they can get dirty. Ceramic projects are available for pick-up two weeks after camp is over. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits.

Cheerleading Grades 1–3 | $395/$425 | Session 2: June 10–14, Session 7: July 15–19 | Grades 4–6 | $395/$425 | Session 4: June 24–28, Session 7: July 15–19 | Professional cheerleading coaches from Cheergyms teach campers high-energy cheers, dances and squad teamwork. At the end of the week, campers perform a routine for their J-Camp friends and families in the Seiler Family Gymnasium. All levels are welcome. Additional waiver required.

Grades 1–3 | $425/$465 | Session 9: July 29–Aug 2 | Grades 4–6 | $425/$465 | Session 9: July 29–Aug 2 | Campers build on their circus repertoire in a Cirque du Soleil experience. With the professionals at 888 Monkeys, they practice the art of trapeze, use aerial silks, walk the tight wire, juggle, master the rollabolla, balance on a globe, learn acting skills and perform circus acrobatics. Older campers have the chance to combine different circus skills and learn to use stilts and the unicycle. They finish off the week with a dramatic production of Circus of the Stars. Clone Wars Grades 1–3 | $395/$435 | Session 3: June 17–June 21, Session 9: July 29–Aug 2 | May the Force be with you...at J-Camp! Campers discover their inner Jedi at this fun camp of galactic proportions brought to you by Arimaw Productions and LucasFilm Ltd. Campers undergo rigorous lightsaber training, take part in awesome team games, make Star Wars-themed art and have many more adventures that are out of this world. Like it they will.

Dodgeball & GaGa Grades 1–3 | $375/$415 | Session 8: July 22–26 | Grades 4–6 | $375/$415 | Session 6: July 8–12 | Two of our most popular camp activities merge for a game-lover’s extravaganza. Crazy versions of GaGa and dodgeball will have players working up a sweat, and they'll have a jumping good time at Sky High Sports and Great Jump Sports. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits. Additional waiver required.

Great Outdoors

Enter an amazing realm of fairies filled with wonder, delight and joy! Campers make wands, don wings and create fairy dust in this enchanting and creative camp. They’ll learn fairy dances and songs, how to bestow magical gifts and what fairies like to eat. Your little fairy will display his or her talents at the J-Camp Closing and Shabbat Celebration. Let your fairy fly!

Fencing

Campers travel to various locations, which may include the beach, a wooded area and a lake. There, teambuilding activities are paired with skill building, and campers learn about wilderness survival. Building shelter, finding water, growing food and identifying edibles are all covered in this outdoor adventure. Skills will be tested with an overnight camping experience on Thursday night at a local campground, led by experienced staff.

Gymnastics

Draw your sword and join the OFJCC’s fencing team! J-Camp and Le Club Touche have teamed up for an action-packed fencing camp. For two hours a day, campers learn the basics of fencing and dueling in a safe and instructional environment. Gloves, swords, jackets and masks are provided. Campers must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits. Additional waiver required.

Fort Building Grades 1–3 | $370/$410 | Session 1: June 3–7 |

Ice Skating

Campers travel to various locations, which may include the beach, a wooded area and a lake. At each location, campers learn basic survival skills for the area and create a fort based on that knowledge. Teams will be judged on how well their fort is structured, and on Friday, parents and friends can marvel at all of the creations!

Boys and girls of all abilities receive several hours of instruction daily on the vault, bars, beam, floor and trampoline at Airborne Gymnastics, working toward their own specific goals. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits. Additional waiver required.

Campers score a hole-in-one with this camp, traveling daily to Deep Cliff Golf Course for four hours of instruction from PGA golf professionals. Lessons include golf etiquette, putting, chipping, half and full swings on the driving range, proper club selection and basic scoring. A vegetarian lunch is provided daily at the golf course.

Grades 1–3 | $400/$440 | Session 1: June 3–7, Session 6: July 8–12 | Grades 4–6 | $400/$440 | Session 8: July 22–26 | Experience J-Camp on ice! Campers receive daily instruction from Sharks Ice instructors. Free skate time and other field trips are included. Ice skates are provided and no experience is necessary. Indoor Soccer Grades 1–3 | $305/$345 | Session 9: July 29–Aug 2 | Campers learn the fundamentals of passing, dribbling, trapping, shooting and defense while participating in fun games and contests. Happy 4th of July! J-Camp celebrates with a week full of fun and exciting field trips. Campers ride the rides at the Boardwalk, take a trip to Great America, slide down the tubes at Raging Waters and conquer the world at Laser Quest. The week ends with a kosher hot dog BBQ.

Campers take exciting day trips to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Great America, Happy Hollow Park and Zoo and Jungle Island. The week ends with a kosher hot dog BBQ. Due to excursions, Kid Adventure does not include traditional J-Camp activities.

Get in the groove in this cool camp! Activities include a weekly field trip, swim lessons twice a week, horseback riding lessons, arts and crafts, sports, music, games, skits, environmental education, recreational swimming and exploring Jewish culture as well as pre-selected elective activities. Elective options will be sent after registration and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some sessions will rock out with a sleepover at the OFJCC or a campout (see below)!

Atherton Lacrosse designed this camp to familiarize players with the fundamentals of lacrosse, acquire and improve skills and learn strategy. The week consists of scrimmages, skill stations and fun lacrosse activities. Campers must bring appropriate shoes and athletic supporter (boys) daily. Campers will be given a lacrosse stick and mouthguard to take home. Other camp activities include games, recreational swim, sports, music, learning about Jewish culture, arts and crafts and skits.

Create, play and learn. Campers construct cities complete with houses, businesses, pyramids, bridges and more. They build motorized cars, trains, buses and trucks, then race them, crash them and repair them. They explore the many possibilities of building systems while learning useful construction techniques during three hours of daily instruction from Play-Well TEKnologies. Campers discover how different machines, simple and complex, are used in our daily lives. They design machines using pulleys, wedges, screws and levers and have fun learning how catapults work. For Campers Entering Grades 7—10 Beginning Surf Grades 7–10 | $515/$555 | Session 3: June 17–21 | Ride the waves! This camp is designed for first-time or beginner surfers and campers who love the water. Activities include surfing, body boarding, body surfing and other water games. Surfboards and wetsuits are provided. Campers may be required to share body boards and are encouraged to bring their own. In addition to our regular camp ratios, one surf instructor is provided to every four campers while in the water. Some staff are certified lifeguards and all staff are experienced around the waterfront. Campers must be able to swim to participate. Additional waiver required.

Camp Adventure Grades 7–10 | $370/$410 | Session 1: June 3–7, Session 8: July 22–26 | Join the ultimate summer adventure! Camp Adventure is a great opportunity for your child to see what the Bay Area has to offer. Age-appropriate field trips provide campers with new experiences and lasting friendships. Destinations change daily and include locations like Great America, Dave & Busters, Golfland, Boomers and bowling.

Golf Grades 7–10 | $465/$505 | Session 6: July 8–12 | Campers score a hole-in-one with this camp, traveling daily to Deep Cliff Golf Course for four hours of instruction from PGA golf professionals. Lessons include golf etiquette, putting, chipping, half and full swing on the driving range, proper club selection and basic scoring. A vegetarian lunch is provided daily at the golf course.

Lake Tahoe: Rock 'n' Ride Grades 7–10 | $595/$635 | Session 7: July 15–19 | Join us for an awesome week in Lake Tahoe with teens from other JCCs. Teens spend a night at another Bay Area JCC, then head to Tahoe to see the sights and meet new friends. Activities include rock climbing, hiking, biking, cooking and relaxing at the lake. River Rafting: Gold Country

Beat the heat with J-Camp! Campers travel to splashtastic places including Raging Waters, Waterworld USA, Golfland, Santa Cruz Boardwalk, Blackberry Farms and Aqua Adventure. Campers must wear closed-toe shoes on shore and must be able to swim in order to participate.

Have a rip roarin’ good time! We’ll join up with teens from the Osher Marin JCC on Monday before departing for our four-day, three-night adventure at the American River’s South Fork. On Friday, we

The LIT program teaches teens about taking on leadership roles. The program is designed so that campers enroll in at least one session of fieldwork upon completion of the training course. But because interacting with campers and representing J-Camp requires a certain level of maturity, the LIT fieldwork program is selective. Upon completion of training, teens will be invited to participate in fieldwork. For the safety of our campers and LITs, returning LITs must still enroll in training in order to be eligible for fieldwork.

Looking for a future summer job? CITs learn about patience and responsibility in a fun summer experience. Those who shine will be asked to come back as paid junior counselors. Interacting with campers and representing J-Camp requires a certain level of professionalism, so teens must be interviewed by the Camp Director and Teen Manager before summer begins. Upon completion of the training course, CITs enroll in at least two sessions of fieldwork. For the safety of campers and CITs, returning CITs must still complete training in order to be eligible for fieldwork. To set up an interview, please email youth@paloaltojcc.org.

Leader in Training (LIT) Training Grades 8–9 | $270/$310 | Session 2: June 10–14, Session 4: June 24–28, Session 6: July 8–12 This fun and challenging program builds leadership skills and focuses on the personal and vocational skills you need to become successful future leaders. Training includes topics such as camp leadership, group games, supervision, planning and administration, public speaking and presentations, first aid and a variety of great team-building activities.

Leader in Training (LIT) Fieldwork Grades 8–9 | $135–$175/$175–$215 | Session 3: June 17–June 21, Session 4: June 24–28, Session 5: July 1–5*, Session 6: July 8–12, Session 7: July 15–19, Session 8: July 22–26, Session 9: July 29–Aug 2, Session 10: Aug 5–9 | LIT fieldwork allows you to use your leadership skills in the field. LITs participate in various camp activities, assist in daily camp operations and receive valuable on-the-job experience that will help build a strong foundation for any career. Specific camp placement depends on LIT skill sets and camp availability. Campers may register for LIT fieldwork prior to their completion of the training course. If they do not pass the training course, they will be refunded for fieldwork sessions.

Counselor in Training (CIT) Training Grades 10–12 | $265/$305 | Session 1: June 3–7, Session 3: June 17–June 21 This in depth program takes teens on a journey with the goal of becoming one of J-Camp’s future leaders! Teens learn about behavior management, first aid, group games, song leading, supervision, planning and administration while practicing their public speaking and presentation skills. Although serious topics will be discussed, each day will be infused with J-Camp fun!

Campers may register for LIT/CIT Fieldwork prior to their completion of the training course. If they do not pass the training course, they will be refunded for fieldwork sessions. Camp registration is only available online. Camps have maximum capacities and space is available on a first come, first served basis. Registration remains open until the Thursday before a camp session begins or until the camp is full, whichever comes first. Campers may register on the first day of a camp session based on availability by visiting the Camp Office (Room M115). Please block out at least 30 minutes to register your child if it is the first day of the session.

J-Camp tries to accommodate all campers. If your child needs special assistance, please call the Camp Office at (650) 223-8622 before registering. Our ability to accommodate your child depends on which camps are best suited for your child and what assistance we can provide.

Payment

Financial Assistance (Camperships)

Camperships are available to those families that qualify. Before applying, your child must be registered for camp. To apply, please visit www.paloaltojcc.org/jcamp and log into your account to fill out a confidential application. Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted to the OFJCC by April 1, 2013 at 5:00 PM. Incomplete applications will not be processed. In the case that the award does not meet the need, all money paid will be fully refunded. Camperships are made possible through the OFJCC Camp Scholarship Fund and the Jewish Community Day Camp Scholarship Fund of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund. J-Camp Cancellations & Transfers

In order to continue to offer excellent camps at an affordable price, the OFJCC has set credit and refund guidelines for all camp programs. No credits, refunds or transfers are allowed within two weeks of the program start date for which you are registering. If you wish to make a change or cancel your registration prior to the deadline, please consult the J-Camp policies and procedures page at www.paloaltojcc.org/camppolicy.

How can I speak with someone about what to expect before camp starts? In addition to Campfire Chats and Meet the Camp Staff Night (page 2), you will receive a pre-camp phone call. The Friday afternoon before your child’s camp, the unit leader will give you a call to welcome you to J-Camp and provide a small overview of what to expect.

J-Camp transports our campers on chartered school buses that are routinely inspected by the California Highway Patrol. The bus drivers have completed background checks and drug/alcohol tests. Departure/arrival times as well as field trips themselves are subject to change without notice.

How many staff members will be watching my camper?

Can I sign up my child for a camp if he/she is not entering the grade specified?

We operate on the following ratios which are recommended by the American Camp Association. • 1:6 for campers entering kindergarten • 1:8 for campers entering grades 1–3 • 1:10 for campers entering grades 4–6 • 1:10 for campers entering grades 7–12

In order for your camp’s unit leader to administer medication during the day, your doctor's prescribed medication or over the counter medication must be checked in during drop off. You will need to complete a separate Medication Disbursement Form. You can find this form in your eCamp account.

How will my camper be transported to and from field trips?

No. Campers must be entering the indicated grade in the fall 2013-2014 school year. Camps are designed with curriculum and programming for campers of a certain grade. Campers entering a pre-kindergarten program should enroll in Preschool Camp (www.paloaltojcc.org/preschool).

How do I ensure my camper is in the same group as his/her friend?

The basics include lunch, a small snack and a drink. J-Camp will provide an additional afternoon snack. Campers should wear closed toe shoes and comfortable clothes that can get dirty.

What is J-Camp’s food policy?

The camp refers to a parent show. What is that?

All food provided by the OFJCC will be kosher-style or vegetarian. Travel camps will have kosher-style food on trips. Please do not send your camper with pork, shellfish, peanut butter or any type of nut product in their lunches. We proudly serve kosher Hebrew National and vegetarian hot dogs at our BBQs.

Is there an alternative to me packing lunch for my child every day?

Café on the Square is happy to provide lunch service for all our campers and families on the go! Please visit www.cafeonthesquare.com to view lunch menus and to order. All lunches will be delivered during the Havurah morning rally.

What is an eCamp account?

After you register, you will have access to a personal, secure eCamp account where you will be able to download the parent survival guide and additional waivers (when applicable). As we get closer to summer, you will be able to download camp schedules and newsletters. During the summer, you can send emails to your camper and even purchase pictures of your child’s fun camp events and activities. URL and login credentials will be provided in your camp confirmation email.

Where can I view my child’s daily camp schedule?

The daily schedule is available on your eCamp account beginning in mid-May. Once on the site, click the “Weekly Highlight Sheets” tab, and then click on the camp you are interested in. For security reasons, you will be given login information only after you have registered for J-Camp.

J-Camp wants your child to be able to share their experience with you. Many camps have a parent show as part of our J-Camp Closing and Shabbat Celebration or a private show at another time. We invite parents and friends to come see what the campers have been up to all week. J-Camp understands that parents might not be able to attend at the specific time of the show and encourages you to contact the unit leader to set up an alternative time to visit.

How do I find out more about being a host family?

The best way for our international staff to experience America is to immerse themselves in the day-to-day lives of our J-Camp families! Host family responsibilities include housing, meals, transportation to and from J-Camp and access to laundry facilities. Once they have met peers at camp, most international staff members are able to secure rides home each day. Host families receive a $1,000 credit toward any camp this summer! What should my children bring/wear to J-Camp?

Camp is an important place to develop new relationships and we encourage parents to support this goal. However, if you still prefer campers to be in the same group, you may provide these requests during the registration process or you can also provide a written note for the unit leader of your camp on the first day. Camp staff will attempt to put your campers in the same group, but groups depend on ability and/or age and therefore these accommodations will not always be possible.
