On the Cover Young volunteers make blankets for homeless community members.

Community in Action There’s a lot to be said for community. Jewish tradition asks people to come together for occasions both joyful and sad. It demands that we reflect, question and take action. A good community motivates you, delights you and challenges you. Like a family, it can drive you crazy sometimes, but that’s part of the deal too. When you become part of the community at the Oshman Family JCC, you can be sure we will offer you tremendous opportunities to live, play and grow. But we will also ask for something back because being part of a community means giving back when the time comes. And that time is now. There’s never been a greater need for social action in our community, which is why the Oshman Family JCC is uniting all of our tikkun olam efforts into a Center for Social Responsibility. If the cause is disaster relief, we are raising funds for those who lost everything in the North Bay fires and sending a team to help rebuild homes in Houston. We will be there. If the cause is homelessness and poverty, we are sending volunteers to the local food banks and shelters through our Mitzvah Corps. We will be there. If the cause is minority and immigrant rights, we are hosting Potlucks for Peace with interfaith communities. We will be there. If the cause is women’s advocacy issues, we are launching a new program with partner JCCs in New York, Israel and Poland to bring social change global. We will be there. We are doing so much to give back, but we can’t do it without you. We hope you’ll make the OFJCC the place you come to give back. Together. Zack Bodner, OFJCC CEO

“Music can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable.” ~Leonard Bernstein Witness the power of music when Mandy Harvey graces the stage of the OFJCC’s Schultz Cultural Arts Hall. A deaf American singer-songwriter, Mandy overcame seemingly impossible obstacles, receiving international attention when she appeared on America’s Got Talent. American Sign Language will be included in this production. Performers at the OFJCC demonstrate unparalleled skill on a range of instruments—from voice box to squeezebox. When you hear Stas Venglevski’s brilliant artistry and command of the accordion, you’ll see why the consummate entertainer has been called the world’s foremost virtuoso of the bayan. Language can uplift us, giving us new insight and different perspectives, even on familiar topics. Speakers this season include Ayelet Waldman, author of A Really Good Day, a revealing account of her experiment with microdoses of LSD to treat a debilitating mood disorder. New York Times Editor and author Jonathan Weisman joins us to discuss his new book—a look at how Jews are currently viewed in America and how we can fight anti-Semitism. Finally, we are thrilled to once again sponsor and host TEDxPaloAlto. Stay tuned at tedxpaloalto.com for updates. As always, the OFJCC is dedicated to getting the next generation excited about the arts and education. With MatheMagic!, internationally acclaimed magician and educator Bradley Fields electrifies audiences with his famous magic illusions and reintroduces us to the power, beauty and language of math. Our Opera for Families series continues to capture the imaginations of children, enhancing their cultural development with themed events throughout the year. Cultural arts programs are made possible in part through the generosity of the Koret Foundation, the Oshman Family, the Albert and Janet Schultz Supporting Foundation of the JCEF, and Bonnie and Marty Tenenbaum.

“Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.” ~Golda Meir What sparks your interest? You may choose to take your photography to the next level with the OFJCC School for the Arts’ Photography Workshops— or make new friends while immersing yourself in the stories of Ariel Sabar, Nora Ephron or Alice Hoffman in our Parents’ Book Club. If philanthropy is what gives you a sense of purpose, mark your calendar for the OFJCC Annual Benefit, this year featuring master mentalist Lior Suchard. Help raise scholarship funds and have your mind blown—all in one magical night. For daytime visitors, our Community Tuesdays program offers a weekly helping of concerts, lectures and more. Coming up, enjoy a concert luncheon featuring Hungarian Dances with the Vinifera Trio and a multi-cultural educational concert, Around the World in 30 Instruments by Four Shillings Short. Think you’ve seen and heard everything this world has to offer? Dr. Seth Shostak from SETI joins us to discuss the approaches used to detect life in outer space and the societal impact of learning that other life is, in fact, out there. Back on Earth, it is important to find people you connect with. Grad students and young professionals looking for friends and networking opportunities can meet up at ENGAJ (Engaging the Next Generation of Adult Jews) events such as holiday parties, dinners and more. For those far from home, creating connections can be even more difficult. Our programs for Russian- and Hebrewspeakers allow emigrants to interact in their native language. The Israeli Cultural Connection has extensive offerings (pages 8 and 23) and Russian programs include exciting cultural events as well as useful courses like the Citizenship Interview Preparation Class for Russian-speakers.

“It’s important to push yourself further than you think you can go each and every day.” ~Kerri Strug Everyone faces hurdles on their journey to wellness. For some, that hurdle is simply getting started. The OFJCC has options perfect for someone looking to take that first step. Programs like Beginning Weights introduce you to unfamiliar equipment you may have been too nervous to try before. Our heated pools offer a non-impact option for swimmers of all levels including Swimming Fundamentals, PreMasters and Masters Swim. And since every exercise regimen needs a nutrition plan to accompany it, our Nutrition Talks feature useful topics like how to approach a healthy detox or what to eat to boost energy. When you’re looking to advance your fitness routine, our trainers’ small group classes will finetune your workout. For a quick fix, our 30-minute HITT (high-intensity interval training) classes help you feel great and lose weight fast. Or make a commitment to health with Committed, a highly refined and comprehensive training system customized for your needs. If you haven’t tried kettlebells yet, there’s no time like the present. In Kettlebell Classics, learn to use these powerful tools to improve your physique, build cardiovascular endurance and increase mobility and flexibility. Put on your gym shoes and get going. There is no excuse not to. Children’s Cove can take care of your little one while you work out, and afterward, make time to reward yourself. Our fully-stocked locker rooms include steam rooms and saunas, so relax… Soak in some vitamin D on our inviting sun deck. Give your sore muscles some love with a skillful massage.

“Israel [is] the most dramatic country in the world. Everybody's engaged. Everybody argues. When I leave Israel, I get a little bit bored, you know?” ~Shimon Peres With the ICC, life is a celebration; you’ll never be bored. Israeli-style holiday parties bring Israel to the Bay Area this spring. Crank up the volume as you get out your craziest costume for our Ultimate Purim Party, featuring live music by Backyard Remedy. Then, connect with other Israelis during a night of study, schmooze and spirit at Tikkun Leil Shavuot, where we’ll put a new spin on old traditions. Each year, our Yom Ha’atzmaut Community Celebration brings thousands of people together, and this year will be no exception as we celebrate Israel at 70. On this special anniversary of Israel’s independence, our extended celebration includes an educational series on Israel@70 in which you’ll see our historic homeland with fresh eyes. Our new Tzavta group for Israeli adults brings you everything from mindfulness workshops to lectures on the arts. And for your English-speaking friends, we are introducing a Beged Kefet Hebrew Ulpan for Adults in 2018! The ICC is also dedicated to bringing exciting events to kids of all ages, from newborns to teens. Stimulate your child’s early development with Libi, the center for your growing family, offering a new Baby Sign Language class for both Hebrew and Englishspeakers. When it’s time for your teen to transition to “adulthood,” Raise the Bar allows bar and bat mitzvah age Hebrew-speakers to connect to Jewish culture and traditions in an Israeli context. Finally, teens show off their star power at the Bay Area Israeli-American Idol Singing Competition, where middle-and high-school-age students take to the stage and compete for best act.

Yom Ha’atzmaut Celebration: Israel at 70 Sunday, April 22

“The beauty of Judaism is that it demands we ask questions, especially of ourselves.” ~Edgar Bronfman, Sr. Deepen your knowledge with spirituality-infused classes and workshops. Text and Texture with Ceramics is an innovative evening series that combines text study, discussion and hands-on work with clay. Daytime lectures provide new perspectives on Judaism. Nobility in Non-Militant Holocaust Resistance, for example, sheds light on the selfless acts and practical compassion of the Jews, not as passive victims, but as heroes who demonstrated the essential goodness of the human spirit and triumphed over the worst possible social conditions. Ready to take your Jewish education a step further by learning Hebrew? Our Hebrew Ulpan is coming in 2018! Amp up your whole family’s enthusiasm about Judaism through meaningful and inspiring events. Our vibrant Tel Aviv Laila Lavan Shabbat Dinner celebrates the summer solstice with live music and dancing. For the ultimate in family adventure and discovery, join us on the Silicon Valley Community Trip to Israel, with an exceptional 10-day itinerary. Want to explore a little closer to home? OFJCC Family Camp strengthens your connection with nature through a Jewish lens. This year, we’re heading to Monte Toyon in Aptos, an inspiring setting secluded among coastal redwoods just inland from the shores of Monterey Bay. The Jewish holidays are a special time to reconnect with our traditions and each other. Make the OFJCC part of your holidays with the Tu B’shvat Walking Seder, where you can enjoy nature, ritual and a potluck picnic lunch. Gear up for your own Passover seder at the arts and crafts-filled Community Passover Celebration plus events like the inspiring Women’s Seder and interactive, family-friendly Community Seder. Of course, it wouldn’t be late winter without a massive Purim bash! Join us for a rollicking Purim Shabbat Dinner and Costume Party for all ages.

“The important thing is not to stop questioning.” ~Albert Einstein In spite of all the professional researchers, scientists and industry disrupters in our area, sometimes the very best questioners are children. Their curiosity is an endless gift, and the award-winning OFJCC Leslie Family Preschool nurtures children’s curiosity on their path of learning and development. We invite you to attend our Preschool Open Houses at both the Palo Alto OFJCC and Los Altos Hills Beth Am campuses to learn more about the Leslie Family Preschool, where nature, Jewish culture and community are a central part of what we do. At our Oshman Family JCC location, children learn about the construction process, building structures with natural materials as they watch our Pavilion and Park grow. Each week, children make challah and sing meaningful songs for Shabbat. They learn to give back with our Giving Garden, donating fresh produce to those in need. Our Los Altos Hills location at Congregation Beth Am offers a lush, green campus and intimate class sizes. Grow with your child through high-quality facilitated programs for parents and little ones. Our outstanding Yad b’Yad parent participation series for children ages 12–23 months is offered at both preschool locations. The program gives you a chance to climb, laugh and play with your child and other families in a warm and welcoming environment. At the OFJCC, Yad b’Yad Swim & Gym and Yad l’Shabbat provide additional ways for you to bond with your child! Plus, enjoy unstructured free play time at Baby Play Space in our Family Center once a week. There are so many ways to learn and grow with your little one at the OFJCC.

“The world we build tomorrow is born in the stories we tell our children today.” ~Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Teaching by example is one of the best ways to ensure that your child truly understands the values you want to pass on to them. Families in the OFJCC community look forward to Mitzvah Day each year, an opportunity to help those in need with projects for all ages. Introduce your children to the benefits of healthy eating in our fun, hands-on Family Cooking Classes! Give yourself the edge with free parenting workshops such as Raising Tech-Savvy Kids, specifically addressing cyberbullying, predators and addictive screen behaviors. After school, education doesn’t stop. At the OFJCC, it gets more fun! In our Mind Games “Strategy Games” enrichment class, we play games like Machi Koro, a city-building card game, and Ticket to Ride, a train tycoon’s dream. In Minecraft Madness, a coding class, children explore ancient Greek mythological structures, build a working clock tower and create their own castles. The OFJCC School for the Arts offers dance, music, painting and more, including a Musical Theatre class that culminates with a performance in the Schultz Cultural Arts Hall. Club J, located at both the OFJCC and Sand Hill School in Palo Alto, offers a more extended afterschool option with transportation available for parents who can’t drop off their children during the day. See what it’s all about at our open houses this February (page 26)!

Mitzvah Day Community Day of Service Monday, January 15

Teens and pre-teens find their safe space at the OFJCC. For middle schoolers, The Lounge is a comfy place to play games, do homework or just kick back with friends. Middle and high schoolers can show off their musical prowess at Battle of the Bands with a chance to win big prizes! And on their journey to adulthood, teens have the opportunity to take a meaningful trip to Poland and Israel with Shalhevet, an educational program connecting Bay Area high school juniors and seniors to the history, heritage and future of the Jewish people.

“You’ve got to be noisy and colorful and lively.” ~Mel Brooks At camp, it’s perfectly acceptable—and encouraged—to be noisy and colorful and lively. Camp gives children a chance to be themselves: the American Camp Association reports that 92% of campers reported camp helped them feel good about who they were. At the OFJCC, kids can get their fill year-round during their school’s holiday breaks. With different themes each day, children play untraditional Silly Sports such as pom pom hockey and crab soccer. Or at Color Crazy camp, children immerse themselves in color-based activities, making orange juice in an orange room, creating tie dye shirts and more. Some days include a field trip—this spring, Great America is on the agenda! For many kids, there is no time more sacred than summer, and no place more spectacular than summer camp. J-Camp’s summer sessions are filled with options for every interest. Our Traditional Camps offer an assortment of activities for a well-rounded experience. Crafts, camp songs, skits, games, field trips and more make up an unforgettable summer. Plus, more specialized options allow your camper to focus on acquiring new skills or exploring existing passions. We’re partnering with the award-winning Jr. Chef Stars to offer Cooking Camp where your camper will learn how to make tantalizing dishes the whole family will enjoy! Last year, we introduced Tayasim, a Hebrew immersion program that will expand this year to serve rising kinder through third graders. Your camper will learn Hebrew while enjoying a top-notch traditional camp experience.
