2015–2016 ENRICH LIVES • BUILD COMMUNITY • INSPIRE JEWISH JOURNEYS

Our Vision

Our parents and grandparents came to the JCC because they were Jewish. Our children and grandchildren will do Jewish because they came to the JCC. Last year, we adopted a provocative new vision: “To be the architects of the Jewish future.” As architects, we aspire to be pioneers, collaborators and advocates in building new platforms, practices and programs to engage Jews— and non-Jews. We want to create broader community and deeper connections, rooted in Jewish tradition but not bound by it. The OFJCC dived headfirst this past summer and autumn into this new take on Jewish life—what we call Judaism 4.0. We held several “ideation” salons with some big thinkers in our community to start the conversation about what Judaism 4.0 means to them and how the OFJCC can impact the Jewish future. We have begun to explore what this means through groundbreaking programs like Burning Mensch, Zionism 3.0, Mitzvah Corps and our first Silicon Valley community trip to Israel; we are implementing a model for building community around meaning. This year, the OFJCC will build upon this platform and ignite more dialogue. We will inaugurate new rituals, host innovative celebrations and foster more creative partnerships. Being the architects of the Jewish future means embracing both the values of over 5,700 years of Jewish tradition and the velocity of change today, especially in Silicon Valley. Being the architects of the Jewish future and defining Judaism 4.0 are powerful, transformational ideas. And they are ideas that we can turn into reality with your help. We are so grateful for your enduring support as we embark on this exciting new Jewish journey together. It’s a journey to ensure that we, our children and our children’s children will always find meaning in Jewish life and a home at the OFJCC.

Zack Bodner CEO

Judaism has evolved from the Biblical Period with the Mishkan (1.0) to the Temple Period (2.0). The Rabbinic Period, after the destruction of the Second Temple, is widely believed to have lasted all the way until today in some form or another (3.0). We have identified five drivers of change that are bringing about a new stage in Jewish life— Judaism 4.0—and shaping our vision to be the architects of the Jewish future.

Five Drivers of Change Institutional

Ethnographic

Israel

• There is a shrinking affiliation with legacy institutions.

• Interfaith marriage is a fact of Jewish life today.

• A proliferation of Jewish start-ups is changing the landscape.

• There is a diversification of race and gender roles in Jewish life.

Meaning & Belonging

• For the first time ever, there exists a strong Jewish diaspora and a strong Israel. • Jews are seeking a new paradigm for this relationship.

Technology & Science

• Meaning can be found anywhere: “Jewish” is not necessarily someone’s primary identity.

• Technology is a platform for new forms of community.

• It is becoming necessary to define “vibrant secular Judaism” as a way of life.

• New technologies can both serve and challenge Jewish life.

Our Strategies Under Zack Bodner’s leadership, we introduced a strategic plan to ensure that the Oshman Family JCC maintains its welcoming, innovative, artistic and supportive Jewish atmosphere. We have taken steps to grow in each of five areas, giving community members more and more meaningful opportunities to deeply incorporate the OFJCC into their lives. Learn about our progress in each of these five strategic areas on the following pages.

Our Strategies

Be a Warm, Welcoming Place

By expanding family-friendly programming and creating meaningful Jewish experiences for individuals of all backgrounds, the OFJCC serves as a hub for the community, cultivating new relationships every day.

#1 GYM

150 CAMPS

1,000 HOURS

24 SCHOOLS

We were voted Best Gym in Palo Alto for the 5th consecutive year.

J-Camp’s options ranged from Camp H2O to Robotics.

Seniors volunteered their time to help with daytime programming.

Club J provided afterschool fun for local elementary school children.

The OFJCC partnered with Palo Alto-based Abilities United, a nonprofit organization that serves adults with disabilities, allowing them to experience the therapeutic qualities of water in our pool.

“This coming school year will be our son’s third year at Club J. He loves going there every day. The teachers are awesome! They are engaged, cheerful and friendly to the children. I am so grateful to know that my son is in capable hands.”

Our Strategies Be an Incubator for New Expressions of Jewish Identity In the heart of Silicon Valley, we embrace tech-savvy tools to increase engagement and cultivate the idea of a “JCC without walls,” taking new expressions of Jewish identity off campus. We have forged over 80 partnerships with innovative organizations such as Wilderness Torah, Milk + Honey and Reboot that have allowed us to increase our Jewish impact.

300 REVELERS

1,400 MITZVOT

1,O00 NATURE-LOVERS

We gathered for a brand new way to celebrate Lag B’Omer at Burning Mensch.

Community members made a difference through mitzvah service projects.

The Tu B’Shvat party in Ortega Park brought people together beyond our walls.

Our Strategies

Be a Boutique Cultural Arts Destination

Since our first Arts and Dialogues season in 2009, the OFJCC has hosted a steady stream of eclectic, high-caliber speakers and performers. We have developed a reputation as an exceptional and intimate venue for performances, featuring everything from family events and rock concerts to author talks and opera.

23,000 PATRONS

450 CHILDREN

Audience members were inspired during our Arts and Dialogues season.

Opera for Families introduced the magic of classical music to young audiences.

14 sold-out Arts and Dialogues performances including: Sheryl Sandberg, Chelsea Clinton, Suzanne Vega, Marc Cohn, Paul Reiser, Frank Bruni, Rabbi David Wolpe, the Maccabeats and Avi Avital

“The OFJCC’s Cultural Arts program is the heart and soul of Jewish culture and spirit in our area. It allows our family to connect to our roots, music and culture and to experience diverse events that enrich our lives. It also gives the younger generation the ability to inherit the wonderful gift of our culture. We want to express our huge gratitude to the entire OFJCC team.”

Our Strategies Build Support for Israel and Jews Worldwide Our Israeli Cultural Connection brings Israel to the Bay Area with cultural and educational events year-round, and the OFJCC brings our community to Israel with trips for families and unforgettable experiences for teens.

4,000 FRIENDS

750 QUESTIONERS

23 FAMILIES

People up and down the Peninsula celebrated with us on Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day.

Our Zionism 3.0 conference attracted lifelong learners to discuss the relationship between American Jews and Israel.

Our first-ever community trip to Israel created heartwarming memories for travelers of all ages.

“I appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Israel for REELTM program’s pilot, and I am humbled to engage with such interesting and intelligent people. Most of all, I found the Israeli perspective fascinating. I now have a much better sense of how they feel as expats and how they struggle with their homeland, the political policies and the government.“

Our Strategies

Cultivate the Next Generation of Leadership

There are always opportunities for growth at the OFJCC, whether you’re teaching your child the importance of giving back through Mitzvah Corps or getting your teen excited and engaged in leadership programs.

LEARNING TO GIVE BACK

Our preschoolers learned the importance of helping those less fortunate by collecting tzedakah for organizations

such as Loved Twice, Coat Drive Edgewood, Sacred Heart Community Services, Party Child, Hope Services and Shema.

60 STUDENTS Beged Kefet taught children how to read and write the Alef Bet.

200 ‘Jewglers’

14 TEENS High school students took an educational journey to Poland and Israel with Shalhevet.

ENGAJ and Google joined forces for a lively Hanukkah celebration.

How You Can Help Help Us Fulfill the Vision

Your yearly support allows us to operate, but our vision of taking the OFJCC to the next level requires a multi-year initiative that we call “Fulfilling the Vision” (FTV). FTV raises funds for three critical areas: 1) programmatic and operational support, 2) infrastructure and design improvements and 3) reducing the debt that limits our potential. We are well on our way to achieving our $54 million goal.

With your support, we can truly become Silicon Valley’s warm and vibrant Jewish neighborhood.
