community is our middle name when you support the oshman Family jcc, you choose a community that cares deeply about you and your family. we offer abundant opportunities to build connections and work every day to create a sense of belonging. whether you work out in our state-of-the-art fitness center, partake of our world-class cultural arts programs or meet friends to pursue common interests, friendly faces welcome you and help create the meaningful memories that connect you to community. the friendships you make here last a lifetime, based as they are on the shared values that brought you to the oFjcc in the first place. Many children meet in our preschool, share summer camp experiences, celebrate each other’s b’nai mitzvah, and even stand up in one another’s weddings. and just like their children, many parents who meet during these precious, tender years embark on friendships that last a lifetime.

You help yourself create life-enriching, sometimes life-altering connections simply by saying ‘yes’ to our offer of community. By contributing, you know what thousands who have walked in your shoes know, too: by giving—of your time, your talents and your resources—you join with others who share your culture, your values and your priorities. when you support the oFjcc, you ensure that others who are less advantaged or elderly or new to the area find a caring community to welcome them. community is our middle name. our donors are the heroes who ensure that this rich tapestry of jewish life is fully available to any who seek it. Your meaningful gift changes lives for the better. thank you.

with 15,000 engaging with us each week, our center continues to grow into the organization so many of us envisioned when we opened our doors, where preschool graduates return as j-campers and counselors, and ultimately grow into the leaders of the next generation.

For preschool mom, it’s déjà vu when carolyn Nash brings her kids to the oFjcc preschool, it’s déjà vu all over again. a mother of four young children, carolyn began her jcc journey some 20 years ago as a 19-yearold nanny for the levin-gesundheit family, whose boys were enrolled in jcc preschool. She dropped off, picked up, and bounced the boys on her lap at weekly Shabbat celebrations, where she learned to “gather in the light” for Shabbat.

life led her to apple, where carolyn met her b’shert, adam Nash, himself a graduate of the t’enna program. together, they moved to Boston to finish school, and then returned to the Bay area to marry and start their family.

today, she’s come full circle: the teachers who taught the levin-gesundheit boys years ago are still at the leslie Family Early childhood Education center, now teaching carolyn’s own children.

a righteous Donor and past chair of the preschool parent council, carolyn is like so many who give much of themselves: “I’ve gotten much more than I’ve given,” she said. “I feel like the staff and the other parents have really been there for me when I needed them.”

Back when she was a nanny, carolyn was not yet jewish herself. But “the jcc felt very comfortable and welcoming to me,” she said. “I learned from exposure. I thought the traditions were nice and it didn’t feel pushy to me.” In fact, as the children that she cared for became older, she was invited to fill in as a substitute teacher at the preschool, deepening her sense of belonging as she transmitted the value of jewish community. 2

“I knew then that I wanted some day to provide my own children with structure, culture, warmth and tradition,” she said. “I found all these at the jcc.”

“our jcc is so much more than just a school, or just a gym,” carolyn said. “we are a community—strong and caring and there for each other. It’s a valueadded that most people don’t realize when they first come here. It’s why, despite having four kids and crazy schedules, we make time and invest our resources here.”

top: Hank cooper, Yair Eisenberg (z”l), Shirley and jack geffner enjoy a senior excursion to San Francisco’s contemporary jewish Museum.

life begins at the jcc You’ve heard the saying, “life begins at 40?” For jack geffner, born in Manhattan and bred in Brooklyn, you might say life began at 80. that’s how old jack was when he and his wife Shirley moved to california a dozen years ago to be near their daughters Bonnie Shipper of Mountain View and Sharon Ziony of los altos. their first stop? the jcc. “when I introduced myself to the senior group, I was welcomed with open arms and made to feel I’d been here my whole life,” said jack, a retired podiatrist. “I went home and told Shirley, ‘You ought to come. It’s a nice group of people.’” Now residing at the Moldaw Family residences that share the taube Koret campus for jewish life with the oFjcc, jack and Shirley, a retired registered nurse, have woven a rich tapestry of Yiddishkeit, all based at the center they affectionately call “the j.” Married 55 years, the respect they emit for one another is contagious. at mealtime, friends approach their table and join them, uninvited, and always welcome.

BottoM: jack, a jewish war Veteran, and Shirley participate in the center’s to life! Festival.

In addition to attending thursday lunch programs, the geffners have enjoyed oFjcc senior excursions to attractions like San Francisco Symphony, Broadway-style theater and museum exhibitions; they take an opera course; and they attend civics lectures and monthly movie screenings. last summer, their grandson worked as a counselor at j-camp, and joined his grandparents for dinner at the end of each day—much to jack and Shirley’s delight. “we think this is the place to be,” jack said. “the programs run the gamut from cultural to current events to educational programs. It’s something that just keeps the mind flowing and we forget what our age is.” with a complimentary word for everyone on the oFjcc staff, Shirley proclaims, “the programs are marvelous! we made a new life here. we’re very happy.”

Ensuring a vibrant future three years ago when we opened our doors on the sparkling new taube Koret campus for jewish life, the oshman Family jcc hit the ground running.

to fulfill the vision, we have launched a $40 million campaign. once our mortgage is paid, the money now servicing the loan can be redirected to programs that will take us from good to great.

with over 15,000 people crossing our doorstep each week, our focus has been on providing high-quality social, cultural, educational and fitness programs.

consider this: Every $5 million in debt reduction puts $150,000 back in our operating budget—money that would make all the difference in designing and delivering • exceptional Jewish learning opportunities • resources to accommodate special needs children and families • a field house hub for outdoor sports • landscaping to soften and beautify the current hardscape, making our campus more warm and welcoming

thanks to the generosity of people like you, our community raised more money to build the jcc than any capital project in Bay area jewish history. philanthropic contributions paid three-quarters of our costs. the last 25 percent was built on borrowed money. Now operating on a lean annual budget of nearly $16 million, our center is focused on building a vibrant jewish community that benefits the entire South peninsula region. we create opportunities for preschool children to graduate to j-camp and youth leadership positions. on our campus you can enjoy concerts, lectures, classes, and above all, the sense of belonging that comes from shared experience and shared values. ours is a place where friendships flourish—not for a time, but over a lifetime. Values are transmitted. leaders are grown. Still, we can do more. we must do more.

6

www.paloaltojcc.org

Help us ensure a strong, stable future—built on jewish values, alive with activity—and we will deliver the world-class people and programs our community dreams of, and deserves. a community cannot be carried alone. But together, each doing our part, we can finish the important work we began. as our sages wisely taught: ours is not to complete the work, but neither may we desist from it.

ours is not to complete the work, but neither may we desist from it.

oFjcc program Highlights the taube Koret campus for jewish life is a jewish community asset, shared with agencies across the South peninsula. Synagogues lacking the space to host their own high holy day services make use of the albert & janet Schultz cultural arts Hall and the Seiler Family gymnasium, day schools hold important milestone events on our campus, and smaller jewish schools are able to utilize our space year-round for educational purposes. campus-wide events like litquake and holiday celebrations showcase our community spirit and programming.

conversational Hebrew through the Beged Kefet Hebrew language School, and the Gvanim leadership program captures the attention of jewish agencies seeking Israeli board members ready to serve.

the richard & rhoda goldman Sports and wellness complex draws members of all ages. whether interested in group exercise, restorative yoga, family fitness, or volleyball and basketball leagues, the goldman complex connects people in mutually beneficial ways. New this year is EndZone, an afterschool program for grades 6–8.

the leslie Family Early childhood Education center continues to flourish, now with preschools at two locations. the inaugural year of t’enna at Beth am hosts 25 children who are thriving in our play-based, experiential approach while the 250 preschoolers at the oFjcc avidly garden, bake challah, explore and grow. parents enjoy Shabbat time with their toddlers as well as parent education and kindergarten readiness workshops.

the Israeli cultural connection (Icc) attracts some 12,000 Israeli ex-pats in our area with exciting performers such as achinoam Nini (Noa), Miri Ben-ari and Israeli pop sensation Idan raichel, who performed for 3,000 people at our Israeli Independence Day celebration in the jessica lynn Saal town Square. on the Saal Family Midrahov, jewish artisans and food vendors line the way on select Friday afternoons. In addition, some 170 young people learn

cultural arts hit a literary homerun with the production of litquake at the oFjcc, bringing 2,000 to our campus to interact with Bay area literati. other cultural highlights included Nathan Englander, chava alberstein, Meir Shalev, Dave Barry, the Borodin String Quartet and our annual chopshticks comedy event. with an exciting luminaries series featuring authors and personalities and a bigger focus on musical programming for adults and families, 2013 promises to bring new directions and cultural riches to the oFjcc.

j-camp hit yet another milestone by achieving 20 percent growth in enrollment last year. local and international counselors kept 1,000 kids in grades K–12 busy with traditional day camp activities to sports and specialty camp experiences.

club j, the oFjcc’s afterschool program for grades K–5, spread its wings and opened a new satellite program at the South peninsula Hebrew Day School (SpHDS) in Sunnyvale. on campus, enrollment grew to 120 kids—a new record.

adult programming continued to engage all ages. Five hundred young adults enjoyed diverse activities, from the purim Ball to Vinyasa & Vino to the creative Ya-ppetizers preceding the Feast of jewish learning. older adults found their home away from home at the oFjcc, a destination for lunch, bridge, entertainment and excursions. and adults of every generation enjoyed meaningful

events such as the screening of Miss Representation and classes such as african drumming, Big Band jazz Ensemble and Yiddish choristers.

teens! a teen Expo kicked off the year with 25 teen organizations offering opportunities to connect. Sleepovers, dance parties, mitzvah projects and more made the oFjcc the place to be. we’re excited about our new partnership with BBYo that will bring a new and larger cohort of jewish teens to our center. community-wide celebrations and holiday observance offer a little something for everyone, and provide a great opportunity to make connections. come join us!
