The BBC documentary on the Coen brothers will be shown at the Walker also along with an exhibition of posters by local artists, interpreting many of the Coen Brothers’ films. T H E AU D I E N C E : The Coen Brothers’ films attract a wide range of fans, cult followers and critics. Circling Back will have a broad mix of events to help make the anniversary celebration a success. There is reason to pause at the Coen Brothers’ work by digging into the subtext and artistic cinematography; however, sometimes you just want to sit back and enjoy the absurdly dark and often humorous ride.

I N AT T E N DA N C E : Many of the Coen Brothers’ colleagues and frequent stars will be in attendance on opening night; Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, John Polito, Frances McDormand (Joel’s wife) and Jeff Bridges. Local fans and members of the arts community, as well as film students from the University of Minnesota and other local colleges will be attending the event, as well as volunteering at multiple locations.

T H E F I L M S : The Coen Brothers have had a great deal of success over their 30 year career so far. The committee chose some of their more recent acclaimed works. We have also included their works that have local ties with Fargo and A Serious Man. Spanning across two Uptown locations and four screens, we will be highlighting each film’s opening at the Uptown theater with additional runs throughout the festival a few blocks away at the Landmark Lagoon Cinema.

THE FILM West Texas in June 1980 is desolate, expansive country, and Ed Tom Bell laments the increasing violence in a region where he, like his father and grandfather before him, has risen to the office of sheriff. Llewelyn Moss, hunting pronghorn in the desert, comes across the aftermath of a drug deal gone awry, two million dollars in a leather case that he takes to his trailer home. After dark he returns with water for a dying man but is chased away by two men in a truck and forced to abandon his vehicle in order to escape. Returning home he retrieves the money, sends his wife Carla Jean to be with her mother, and

makes his way to a motel in the next county, where he hides

Anton Chigurh is a ruthless hitman who has been hired to recover the money. He has already strangled a sheriff’s deputy to escape custody and stolen a car by using a captive bolt pistol to kill the driver. He tracks Moss to his hotel with the aid of a transponder hidden inside the case. Chigurh makes entry into
