The courage to be yourself Before the launch of the very first printed edition of Superyacht Digest in May, we have decided to dedicate this issue to those figures who with their personality, each on their field, have created a unique style or expressed something new and highly recognizable. Rock, cool! We mean those people who have done something notewhorty and really amazing, by simply expressing theirselves and their joy of life through their "products", above all without any help from marketing activities. Those who in only 6 months have positively captivated the audience, like Sirena Marine. Those who with an innocent presentation at a media lunch, have seduced the audience with an elegant and pure project, like Hamid Bekradi. Those who, like Marco Mehn at Boot DĂźsseldorf, have had the courage to exhibit their strongly innovating artworks, who deserved the compliments by Prince Albert II of Monaco, among designers and shipyards. Those, like Axel Crieger, who have intelligently evoked the difficult deep soul of Frida Kahlo and celebrated the character in a completely different environment, courageously and apparently out of context. Those who with their pure and natural attitude towards the creation of design products become Ambassadors of the Italian excellence and knowhow, or those who, thanks to their strong product and brand identity, are able to create (more than others) great expectation among the public, clients and guests with only a design project. Then come the design capitals, the places to be in order to experience the latest trends not only in terms of design but also in terms of ability of a city to host an event and, consequently, to transform itself accordingly. And finally, Antartica. the ultimate travel experience for those who see luxury as a combination of culture, adventure and... relax.

SIRENA MARINE AND THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

Ipek Kiraç is the youngest enterpreneur in the yachting sector. With her 26 years, she is also the youngest in the Forbes List concerning the wealthiest people in Turkey. At only 21 she is appointed as CEO of Sirena Marine, one of the 8 subsidiaries of the Kiraça Group, the company founded by her father in 1998, leader in Turkey in the automotive sector with over 1,300 employed and with a consolidated turnover of around 350 mln Euros. But the story does not end here. She graduates from Koç Private High School in 2002, where today she is Member of the Management Committee, and in 2007, from Brown University with a degree in Biology, university where she still continues her studies with a Master in Public Health. Another, but not secondary, aspect about her life, involves the Suna & Inan Kiraç Foundation, founded by her and her parents in 2003 with the mission to provide material and moral opportunities to individuals and organizations for raising socially-beneficial and patriot citizens, to

contribute to the social life and accordingly, to conduct activities in education, culture, art and healthcare. The Foundation in 2005 gave birth to the Pera Museum and to the Istanbul Research Institute focused on the Byzantine, Ottoman and Republic Studies. Grown up in a family deeply in love with the sea and navigation, Ipek was studying in America when her father asked her to join the management team at Sirena Marine. The mother fell sick and her presence became suddenly necessary. Sirena Marine was founded as a result of an agreement between Kiraça Holding and world-famous motor yacht manufacturer Azimut - Benetti Group. Today, Sirena Marine produces its own sailboats product lines, under the AZUREE and EUPHORIA brands, in its fully integrated 155,000 square meter facilities and since September 2016 – the year when they celebrated 10 years of success – is present in the motor yacht market with their new brand, Sirena Yachts. In January and March 2017 the International boat shows in Dusseldorf and Miami have seen the globl premiere of their first two units of the new model Sirena 64 and Sirena 56.

while the interior designs bear the signature of Spadolini Design Studio. First presented in Boot Dusseldorf 2017, Sirena 64 is the 20,74-meter first model of the series. German Frers, in charge of her naval architecture exterior design and engineering, emphasizes the customizability and comfort of the design: “There are three optional interior layouts of generous volume for serious world family cruising in great comfort including large glass windows for a good view to the sea and plenty of natural light. The hull design was developed in depth, including testing of three families of models at the Wolfson Unit towing tank facility in Southampton (UK). In addition, seakeeping tests were conducted on a self propelled 1/3 scale model of the hull”.

The result is a low-drag hull, capable of planing at high speeds, while being very fuel-efficient (20% better than competition at 12-16 knots) and comfortable at typical cruising speeds and in anchor, with the aid of its gyrostabilizers. Drawing from the company’s experience in the automotive sector, the hull is made with a new vinyl ester infusion process, significantly increasing its resistance to the dreaded osmosis blisters and thus ensuring better longevity. Thanks to its 850hp CAT motors the boat can achieve a top speed of up to 27 knots (more powerful motors also offered as an option). At 10 knots cruising speed, her range is up to 1000 miles and the fuel consumption is around 48 liters per hour.

18,68-meter Sirena 56 has the standing of her bigger sister as well. Her construction technology reduces weight and improves construction quality and consistency. Carbon hybrid fabrics were chosen in the design process for improved lightness and strength. Bulkheads are made of sandwich PVC and secondary bonded to the hull with lamination. With its standard 650hp CAT motor configuration, this yacht can achieve a top speed of 29,4 knots. At economy cruising speed she can easily achieve a range of 850 nautical miles. Sirena 56 is also available in two different internal layout options and a more powerful engine configuration can also be arranged.

MEETING IPEK KIRAÇ it is true, but a sit is all around the world. This situation is really effecting us but there are still some people who are interested in our products and we hope that this situation changes. Our development plans include another Headquarters in Europe for a second facility where to build bigger boats. It is a work-in-progress so I can’t unveil any detail at this moment. What I can say now is that we have to think of the clients, because they have to come to visit the boat during construction, and if for any reason they do not want to come to Turkey, for us it is a problem. I have to do whatever it is necessary in order to achieve our goals.

- INTERVIEW Q: This is the first time you are in this market as motor yacht builder. What is your personal vision and perception of the market, and what are the main key-points of Sirena Yachts? A: This is our first time we present Sirena Marine with our own brand in the motor yacht sector. It is a very difficult but challenging market but we are very confident of what we are able to do. We have been building boats since 2006, sailing yachts under our own brands and motor boats for Azimut. This important experience has given us the occasion to learn and to improve our abilities as manufacturer, giving us the right push to the building of our own models. We are a passion-driven company. We love what we do. Secondly, our team is young and qualified. This factor combined with the capacity of our yard to do everything in house, gives us the possibility to be a good competitor.

Q: Now, let me ask some personal questions to Ipek as young woman – and not as Sirena’s CEO. Who is Ipek and what or who inspires you in your job? A: I am in this sector as CEO of a shipyard but I have a totally different background. I am a biologist, and obtaining a Master in Public Health. And to give a personal answer to your personal question, I can tell you that I was studying in the U.S. when my mother fell sick. My father said “Ipek, come on”. I was the only child and he didn’t want to be alone. So he asked me to join the team of Sirena Marine. And here I am. But it was not difficult to me, boats are a familiar environment for me since all the time I spent with my family when I was a kid was on our

How much does the country’s image impact on your business and on the Made in Turkey? A: In Turkey it is very hard today, yes,

boat. I mean, the little time we had, since my parents are work-aholics and worked all the time. I grew up on our Swan, designed by German Frers, and heard his name so many times that to me he has always been part of our family. So now that we have entered the motor boat industry, to me, it is a great pleasure to work with him, we have had the honour to design his (German Frers’s) art, we had the honour to design his (German Frers’s) art, with the amazing interiors by Tommaso Spadolini. I have a great team. As to my inspirations, everything I do is inspired by my mother. She was – and she still is – a great woman. I try to continue and to carry on this work exactly as she has tought me. Q: What are your passions?

A: Photography, definitely. I usually spend so much time taking photographs. I like the wild nature, leale, trees. I love black and white, landscapes, portraits. It is my favourite hobby, but I have never taken specific lessons yet. I would like to learn more, so to make better pictures.

A: I really do not know, because this industry is very difficult. I have never bought a superyacht – one day I will buy it and German (she said looking at him and smiling, ed) will build the boat! We now build, let’s say, mini superyachts, and what I know is that there is a lack in culture. For example, in Turkey, which as territory and landscape, is almost an Island, because geographically Turkey is surrounded by four seas on three sides and there are so many people in Instanbul for example who have never seen water. So I think we should try to educate people what boating is, to increase the perception of the product. And above all, not only in terms of finished product, but we should make people better involve in all the building process, from the painting to the decision of every single detail.

Q: Ipek, this is the market of UHNWIs – or in other words, top spenders, the richest people, and your name appear in the Forbes List of your country. This is a very unique aspect, you own a real added value, since you also embody your potential client and perfectly know all the driving factors of purchase. What does the yachting market need to grow. Only a little percentage of UHNWI owns a megayacht. How do you think that the yachting market can improve to increse this result?

way to present yourself as a rock businesswoman, strong, fearless, unconventional? A: It is exaclty what you see. Just my hair, part of who I am. I want to appear exacty as I am. Because for our shipyard it is not a business focused on financial results but rather it is built on our passions. We are very confident in what we are doing that we do not need to adjust according to what people usually expect from a shipyard. WE do not want to be conventional. Of course, we want to achieve good financial results too. But we do not want to be richi with this business. We just want to be proud of what we do. I know that in this industry passioni s a cliche, but for us it is really our mission, our fuel. So te colour of my hair is something connected with our goal, if you want to find out a meaning behind it. I spent my all life acting the way people expected me to. But it is not the way I want to live. And that’s why I have green hair. I do not want to be perceived as rock, but rather, yes, I can say, I am completely involved and excited in what I do. I am very glad about our work. We do not want to build just another boat. But we want to make our owner feel special. From the very first moment of the purchase up to the resell. I do not know the other compagnie but we want to make our owner feel not like a client but like part of our familiy. Every person involved in the boat building process can reach me. This means that the perception we want to give is that all the team, from the workers up to the CEO, is competely dedicated to the project. Otherwise, it would be so frustrating.

Q: I remember your presentation in Cannes. It was for you the first time you talked to the media about Sirena Yachts, it was also the first time you introduce yourself on the International yachting stage. I couldn’t do without notice your hair had some shades of green. Does it have any meaning? Is it a 15

Its long bow accentuates the vessel’s generous proportions. Most importantly, the interior and exterior design work in harmony to create a holistic feeling of a relaxed well-appointed resort.

Milano talks about design 4/9 APRIL 2017 The Milan Design Week was born spontaneously in the early eighties by the companies operating in the furniture and industrial design industry. Even to this day the individual promoters organize themselves to create a great collective event that focuses during the month of April, to coincide with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. The events are in fact mainly located in the showrooms of companies participating, which are scattered throughout the city. However there are some neighborhoods of Milan who have taken a leading role throughout the history of the Fuori Salone, becoming true icons. NYC X DESIGN, A CELEBRATION OF GLOBAL DESIGN 3-24 MAY 2017 NYCxDESIGN is New York City’s official citywide celebration of design. Spanning all disciplines of design, NYCxDESIGN creates a collaborative platform for cultural and commercial opportunities, elevates established and emerging design practices and increases awareness of and appreciation for design by all audiences. The NYC design industry generates over $555 million in City tax revenue annually. T

he Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs initiative - Italian Design Day - was coordinated by Confidustria and UCINA as the representative body for the leisure boat sector. The event will be held on May 2 2017, as day of celebration of Italian flair and creativity. It will span 100 different events in 100 different cities across the world. The aim of the initiative is to showcase the very essence of Made in Italy through the SUPERYACHT DIGEST | March 2017

work of 100 leading exponents whose stories illustrate how Italian design impacted their products and earned them success on markets all over the world. This is creativity focused on creating industrial design that delivers innovative user-friendly solutions. Functional, ingenious objects that share one vital common denominator: they are all intrinsically beautiful and aesthetically-rewarding thanks to their peerless Italian style. 28

Naturally enough, the Italian nautical sector, which leads the world in luxury yacht production, was included. The latter sector comprises brands that have become international standard-bearers for their focus on delivering superbly high quality and meticulous crafting. The end resulting being, of course, beautiful yachts to which a whole string of businesses contribute to complete the complex jigsaw required to achieve true excellence.

Representing their respective companies, Barbara Amerio and Giangi Razeto will be talking about their professional and business experience. They will also each present a product made by their brand, that embodies Italian design values in general and Italian nautical design values in particular. Amer Yachts will the ambassador at the Italian Design Day organised at Madinat al-Kuwait. The event in the Kuwaiti capital city takes place on March 5 rather than March 2 to avoid a clash with a major local festival. F.lli Razeto & Casareto, on the other hand, will represent Italy at the Italian Design Day planned for the Maltese capital, La Valletta.

dedication to the extraordinary, a devotion to beauty and a passion for rock and roll are the strong character traits that have compelled Philipp Plein to give rise to a brand notorious for both unbridled luxury and edgy style.

’AMAGE, one of the largest luxury superyacht projects in the world, is the latest work of the visionary designer Hamid Bekradi, founder of his own studio, HBD Studios Yacht Styling. In September 2016, the project was presented at the Monaco Yacht Show during a press conference held together with Kymeta Corporation.

L’Amage measures 190 meters of overall length (LOA) and a beam of 28.6 meters. Passenger capacity of 30 guests, 14 staterooms plus a private apartment for the owner, and 70 crew members. The inspiration behind this project was to design a "Futuristic Superyacht Style" that goes beyond a mere concept and yet stays within the borders of "Concept Plausibility" and “Technical Feasibility" based on today’s technology and manufacturing techniques. Hence the project was developed in close collaboration with naval architects. Christoph Kuhnert from the Yacht Naval Architects (YNA) in Hamburg has consulted HBD Studios on the general feasibility of the concept and the hull shape since the beginning of the project. According to its designer, Hamid Bekradi, "This project was a challenge to see how far we can take the exterior styling of a superyacht towards a modern and futuristic look, which is still feasible based on today's

Axel Criger's digital paintings are an homage to the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo de Rivera (1907–1954). Inspired by Mexican popular culture, Frida Kahlo employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicanidad movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a Surrealist or magical realist. Her work has been celebrated internationally as emblematic of Mexican national and indigenous traditions, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.

First hit by polio as a child, and at eighteen seriously injured in a traffic accident, which caused her pain and medical problems for the rest of her life, Kahlo began to entertain the idea of becoming an artist during her long recovery. She was also interested in politics and in 1927 joined the Mexican Communist Party. Through the Party, she met the celebrated muralist Diego Rivera. They were married in 1928, and remained a couple until Kahlo's death. The relationship was volatile due to both having extramarital affairs; they divorced in 1940, but remarried the following year. W

hen Lars-Eric Lindblad, now considered the father of eco-tourism, led the first-ever citizenexplorer expedition to Antarctica 1966, he invented the category of expedition travel. Along with him were 57 pioneering individuals, intrepid travelers, ready to embrace the notion of going where only professional explorers or scientists had gone before. ne of a kind is a term often used when talking about superyachts but this one is different.
