Phew! What a lot of music happening throughout the state between fairs and all the special events musicians are keeping busy. The Central PA Jazz Festival is happening August 10th thru Sunday, August 14th. The opening concert is at Strawberry Square from noon to 1:30 pm featuring the Central PA Friends of Jazz Youth Band directed by veteran jazz master Ron Waters. In the evening The Riverboat Jazz Cruise features a fantastic Quintet of highly acclaimed musicians lead by trumpeter Dave Stahl with Tom Strohman on sax, Rob Cochran; bass, Wayne Fox; piano, and Dave Santana;drums. The Pride of the Susquehanna is docked on City Island in Harrisburg with ample parking on the Island. Tickets for this even are only available from the Riverboat Society’s website at www.harrisburgriverboat.com/jazzin. $10 general admission and is suggested to purchase in advance as seating is limited. The boat is docked for Happy Hour from 5:30-7:30pm and goes on summer cruise from 7:30-8:30pm. Food and drinks are available for purchase on the Pride. While on their website check out the other cruises available throughout the summer. On Friday, August 11th the Festival Jazz Party will be at Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center at 1100 North 3rd St,
Harrisburg, . There will be Five bands on 3 stages. There’s Free Valet Parking which is a plus catching a show in Harrisburg. Music will be everywhere in the building as there are 3 separate rooms. Nancy & Spencer Reed will be in the Gallery from 5:30pm to 8pm. Capital Room will feature the RIVER CITY BIG BAND with 17 great musicians including: Cathy Chemi, Steve Rudolph, Bill Perbetsky, Skip Stine, Barry Long, Dale Orris, Jim McFalls, Ron Axsom, Greg Strohman, Steve Shiffer, Tom Strohman, Rick Hirsch, Oliver Fairley, Ryan Kauffman and Michael Druck, Joshua Davis, Pete Lazorcik. Feeling like you just don’t get jazz? Come listen and have the good doctor give you some insight into the how’s and why’s of America’s Music. Dr. Haidet, a doctor at Hershey Medical center, is also a teacher who lectures to student doctors on how to think and react more like jazz musicians. Then at 7:30pm at Mt. Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave. Mt. Gretna, PA 17064 will be the 37th Annual Festival Concert and features one of the most prominent names in the jazz world - trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis. He will bring an all-star quartet that features rising star pianist Richard Johnson. Trombonist, composer, and producer Delfeayo Marsalis is a highly regarded jazz performer and a member of the famed Marsalis family. born in New Orleans in 1965 to esteemed jazz pianist and professor Ellis Marsalis, Jr. He is an amazing talent. The Mt. Gretna Playhouse is an open air/covered roof venue, so dress casually and come enjoy the evening’s music. Tickets will be available at the door, but CPJF recommends ordering in advance at www.friendsofjazz.org or calling the CPFJ office at 717-540-1010 or Gretna Music at 717361-1508. On Sunday, August 24th will be one of the most popular events hosted by CPFJ since it inception in 1980 will be the Annual JAZZ PICNIC at Indian Echo Caverns, 368 Middletown Road, Hummelstown, PA 17036. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
It’s so hard to believe the last month of Summer vacation is already here. We truly are having an amazing Summer, and I hope you are too. The first band of the month is the tried and true Nate Myers Trio. They were playing right down the street at The Colonial Lounge. It was supposed to be a show out on the deck which would’ve been awesome, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Luckily it started pouring before they even set up, instead of during their first set! The inside shows are always a little awkward at The Lounge, but the guys make the most of it, and as usual it’s always a good time with The Nate Myers Trio. Nate, Pete, and Chad always smile and know how to make sure their crowd is happy. The guys have been staying busy with week night shows, early shows, all-age shows, local shows, out of state shows, etc… There really is no excuse why you can’t go see these guys at least once a month. Check out their website at www.natemyers.com to find out which show works best for your schedule and get out there and dance the night away! My next night out was a long one at the Blue Moose in Linglestown for the Al B. Jamboree. It was a full night of great music to help raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It was a beautiful night, but I was glad to see the parking lot nice and full when I arrived. Summer shows are always such a gamble, but I’m glad this was well attended. When I walked in Sal Biondolla (Sal B) was on stage. It’s been years since Sal B and I crossed paths, and it was great to hear him play again. Sal’s music is a great mix of folk, Americana, rock and blues. A lot of original musicians don’t have a particular genre which is fine with me. My Daddy made sure I was raised to love and appreciate all genres of music. Sal B had a great stage presence and his lyrics immediately sucked you into every song. JR WOLF was hosting this show, so between sets they would quickly take the stage and keep the audience captivated. These guys are so good, this was a great way to keep the audience yearning for more. I’ve talked to Jason, their lead singer, a few times at the MMC, and I’m glad to say I finally caught them Out and About. Their music is a great mix of a Jam Band and Rock n’ Roll. They had moments of their songs where they really start jamming together, but quickly switch it up to crazy rock ‘n’ roll riffs with super fast lyrics that are really worth paying attention to. Every time they were done playing it really made me want to jump up and start chanting, “One more song!” Hopefully one of these days I will catch them playing a full show. Next to the stage was Justin Angelo. I’ve seen him perform a few times on our acoustic stage at the MMC. His voice is smooth as silk and he is always a pleasure to hear. Justin has great original songs that are sweet and savory and very easy to listen to. Justin’s voice has a kind of Dave Matthews ring to it at times. Justin performs all over the place throughout central PA and beyond, it’s amazing all the places I’ve seen his name pop up. He is definitely one of those guys that plays every chance he gets! A new band to the scene, and the next to the stage, was The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Even tho the band name is new to the scene, the musicians are not. I’m not sure which one is which as far as good, bad, and ugly, but they are Chris DellaPorta, Clint Lyons, and Cody Wilt. Chris and Clint both played in Single Barrel together, and Cody has done his own solo performances throughout the area. Cody shares the lead vocal duties with Chris and he also plays the mandolin. This line up plays acoustic music, which really helps open a lot more doors as far as booking is concerned. One of the tried and true classics they covered was “Copperhead Road,” not all of their songs are so popular, but their music definitely has a special niche in the area. I’m sure you will be seeing and hearing a lot more of The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, throughout central PA and beyond. The last band of the night was Genesis Lorraine & Her 8-Track Mind. With a 6-piece band all plugged in on Blue Moose’s tiny stage, you knew before the first note it was going to be crazy, and it was! I was told they were missing their trombone player this night, but they still put on one heck of a show. They added a lot more funk and quite a bit of rock n’ roll to the night’s line-up. With the addition of the brass and keys of course it’s going to be a crazier, fuller sound. I would love to see them in a bigger venue where you can truly appreciate every instrument and every note. The band’s dynamics amongst each other was awesome. It truly looked like just a bunch of friends jamming out and having a good time. continued on next page...

Well, that was finally my last and final band from the Jamboree. JR WOLF did a magnificent job hosting the event, keeping the musicians moving and keeping the masses in the club til the end of the show. Hopefully there was some money raised towards the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The next night I headed out to see Steel at Double K. Oh I know, I can hear the groans, Steel again! I absolutely love these guys and their ladies and anyone who has ever read my article knows it. I truly love their music they cover and their originals they create. I heard a new song I’ve never noticed before, it was a new original and it was definitely a very catchy song. I know they play a lot of the same songs, but hey when you got a set list that your fans truly love, why change things up too drastically. Keep your fans dancing and having a good time, and that’s exactly what Steel does. All of the headbangers were out in full force til the end of the night for Steel’s final song of the night. It was a great night with plenty of amazing entertainment. Every Steel show is a guaranteed fun time for me, and hopefully it would be for your too! You can check out their ad in this issue and get out there and rock out with Steel. You won’t be disappointed! The following weekend I headed back to Double K for Latimore Sky. I was so glad to see these guys back on Double K’s schedule. Their style of rock n’ roll is a perfect fit for Double K. It’s been a couple of months since I saw Latimore Sky rock the stage, I was glad to see they finally found a permanent new bass player. Mike Wernsdorfer has stepped up to take over the bass and vocal spot and he’s doing an amazing job! Finding a new perfect fit is never easy, but I’m glad they did! Latimore Sky just released their newest album “Modern Jesse James”. Congrats guys on the new release! I can’t wait to hear it! Six Bar Break helped them with mastering the album, so I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. Latimore Sky will be playing as part of Gettysburg Rocks in August and they will also be playing at The Valley Tavern in Seven Valleys, PA. You can check out all of the details of their upcoming shows in their ad in this issue and check these guys out for yourself! The last night out and about this month started at Hollywood Casino for Green Eggs. Their shows are few and far between these days, but they are also always a good time full of shenanigans and craziness. I’m so glad our paths finally crossed again! Hollywood shows are always a little awkward, especially with

a band like Green Eggs. They are so used to being up close and personal with their fans, but Hollywood really frowns on too much crowd interaction. I’m glad to see they are at least letting Brian take off his shoes while he’s on stage… lol. I don’t know how these guys continue to put on amazing shows year after year, but they definitely do! Congrats to my future niece Amber, she was at Hollywood celebrating her Bachelorette Party. Amber and Jeffrey are getting hitched August 19th. I’m sure that will be a party to remember! The final stop of the night was a super quick stop at Double K to pick up their schedule for this issue. While I was there Firestorm was on stage singing some of my favorite hits, including some Journey! I was absolutely exhausted from a very long photo shoot for Youth Sports Photo, so I just couldn’t hang, but it’s always good to support live music, even if it’s only for a couple minutes. Thanks to Karen and Jim for continuing to advertise with us every month, and for continuing to support live music! I know it’s not easy, especially during the Summer months, but hopefully people will be coming back inside to warm up soon! Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! Last month began with legendary artist Rod Stewart, who brought his current tour to BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ. The 72-year old Stewart continues to put on amazing shows with classics ‘Maggie May, ‘Young Turks’ and ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.’ Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. He was knighted in his homeland England in 2016 for services to music and charity. Stewart is also estimated to have a fortune of £170 million, making him one of the 20 wealthiest people in the British music industry. Cyndi Lauper has been providing support for the tour, with her hits ‘Time After Time’ (written by The Hooters) and ‘Girl Just Want to Have Fun,’ (written by Robert Hazard). Foreigner, Cheap Trick and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience visited Hershey’s GIANT Center on July 15th. The classic band line-up played their popular songs from the 70’s to a near sold-out arena. Jason Bonham, is perhaps best known for being the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. In 2009, Bonham began his band as a live homage to his father’s band and have since toured world-wide. Cheap Trick performed an incredible set pulling many rarities from their archives like ‘Southern Girls’ and even covering The Velvet Underground’s ‘I’m Waiting for the Man.’ Foreigner headlined the show and are touring to celebrate the band’s 40th Anniversary. A new-band discovery this past month included seeing The Menzingers live at Lancaster’s Chameleon. A phenomenal show of great songs and infectious punk energy, with fans sing-

ing in unison. The punk rock band from Scranton, PA formed in 2006 and have released 5 studio albums. The Menzingers recently began touring for their latest album, ‘After The Party’. Epitaph Records signed the band in 2011 and are still currently members of the legendary punk label. The Menzingers have toured with many bands including Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag, Against Me! and Taking Back Sunday. They will tour the next 4 months with shows in Asbury, NJ 8/25, Moosic, PA 8/27 and Philadelphia, PA 9/16. Sawyer’s Free Summer Concert Series continues to bring massive crowds to 2nd Street in downtown Harrisburg. Badfish (A Tribute to Sublime) played to a packed house on July 21st. Previous free shows this Summer have included: Rusted Root, Ben Gallaher, Saving Abel and a Reggae Fest. The next free show is August 24th with The Prince Experience (tribute). Possible future shows include Trapt and Almost Queen (tribute). C&C Music Factory is headlining a Sept. 22nd street festival for Downtown Improvement District. NATIONAL NEWS: Lead singer Chester Bennington, of Linkin Park was found dead in his Palos Verdes Estates home, a small city near Los Angeles on July 20th. Bennington, 41, hanged himself from a bedroom door the Los Angeles County coroner confirmed. Linkin Park sold millions of records and emerged as leaders in the nu metal genre. The band has canceled its North American tour which was to begin on July 27th with a visit to Hersheypark Stadium on July 30th. The Grammy Award-winning group sold 10 million copies of their 2000 debut, “Hybrid Theory,” and then another 4 million with 2003’s multiplatinum “Meteora.” Both albums explored feelings of frustration and fury. Bennington struggled with drug and alcohol addictions at various times during his life. He said he had been sexually abused as a child and was homeless for months before the band found fame. Bennington was close friends with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, who died by hanging earlier this year. He was married to his second wife, Talinda, and is survived by six children. Happy Valley Jam kicked off its first year at Beaver Stadium in State College, PA and featured some of the biggest acts in country. The concert July 8th featured Adley Stump, David Ray, Big & Rich, Chris Young and Blake Shelton. Happy Valley Jam was also a first for Beaver Stadium, which normally only hosts Pennsylvania State football games and other sporting events. Phil Esten, chief operating officer of the university, claimed the goal was to sell at least 30,000 of the 70,000 seats available. Happy Valley Jam decided to bring country to the stadium after seeing the popularity of Blake Shelton and other country shows at the city’s Bryce Jordan Center. U2 bassist Adam Clayton recently thanked his bandmates of four decades for their support during his treatment and recovery for alcohol abuse years ago. “We have a pact with each
other,” said Clayton, 57, who was receiving an award from MusiCares, “In our band, no one will be a casualty. We all come home, or none of us come home. No one will be left behind. Thank you for honoring that promise, and letting me be in your band.” Clayton said part of the reason he had a hard time quitting drinking was that, “I didn’t think you could be in a band and not drink. It is so much a part of our culture.” It was Eric Clapton who finally told him he needed help. “He Menzingers didn’t sugarcoat it. He told me that I needed to change my life and that I wouldn’t regret it,” Clayton said. He credited another friend, The Who’s Pete Townshend, for visiting him in rehab, where he “put steel on my back.” Liam Gallagher of Oasis is releasing his debut solo album “As You Were” on Oct 6th. - and will follow with his first-ever North American solo tour. The 9-date outing includes shows in NYC on Nov 27th, Washington DC on Nov 29th and Philadelphia’s Union Transfer on Nov 30th. Liam Gallagher’s touring band consists of: Jay Mehler on guitars, Mike Moore on guitars, Christian Madden on keyboards, Drew McConnell on bass, and Dan McDougall on drums. KIX guitarist Ronnie Younkins has opened up about his drug addiction, saying that his “disease had gotten worse” after he relapsed several years ago following two decades of sobriety. Younkins missed a KIX concert in Pennsylvania in March when the rest of the group was unable to reach him. He was eventually found “not in great condition and very upset.” A month later, his bandmates revealed that he was “headed to a rehab facility” and promised that his spot in KIX would be “waiting for him” once he was ready to resume playing with the group. Younkins stated, “I’m living at a rehab now. I miss my daughter, and my son, and my home, but I’ve been there for almost two months now, and I’m going to move into a recovery home soon and stay there for a while.” A doctor had prescribed Ambien to help with insomnia which Younkins then became addicted too. And then within a month of his father’s death, “it lead to using heroin and cocaine again.” He added that he was “grateful” to his bandmates for standing by him through all his problems. “I love those guys in the band,” he said. “They’ve been my brothers, all of them, and KIX guitarist Brian Forsythe has been a big help, because he’s in the program as well, and yeah… So, I just want to get my shit together once and for all on a daily basis.” Younkins has returned to playing shows with KIX. Tease Up Your Hair and Get Ready to ROCK with TIME BOMB Article & feature photos By Rachel Rocks Time Bomb is ready to rock the night away and blast you back into the 80’s. I really think Paul Stanley from Kiss describes Time Bomb’s motto the best when he wrote,
“I want to Rock ‘n’ Roll all night, and party every day!” After only hanging with these guys for an evening, it was easy to tell that they are here to have fun, entertain the masses, and play music wherever and whenever they can. Time Bomb originated back in 1988. They had a great run and tons of fun, but life happens, and they decided to call it quits. Back in 2015 their original bass player, got the itch and called the original four members together for dinner. Unfortunately, all of the original members couldn’t get it together again, but it gave their guitar player, Brian Gates, enough of an itch that he kept searching for new band members to help keep the name and the spirit of Time Bomb alive! Lucky for him, in 2015, he was finally able to do just that. Time Bomb has a great, strong, line-up that helps keep the 80’s alive and rockin! Brian and Todd Williams were first jamming together and they couldn’t believe the gold they struck when Tas Journey came in for his audition. He originally replied to their help wanted ad as a rapper from Craigslist, so they weren’t too hopeful, but he came into his audition and blew the cobwebs right out of their PA with his firstsong, “Mental Health.” His range and the songs he can sing from all of your favorite 80’s bands: Motley Crue, Britny Fox, Twister Sister, AC/DC, etc.. is just unbelievable, it was a match made in heaven! After going through a couple of drummers, Louis Vera came back in to try-out. Talk about someone who is dedicated or maybe it was just fate, but Louis actually tried out for Time Bomb 25 years ago and didn’t make the cut! He’s so glad he didn’t let that first audition discourage him, because he absolutely loves rockin’ out with these guys. Since they got their new full line-up in place, they’ve been playing wherever and whenever they possibly can. This past year they’ve really had some amazing opportunities, opening for great bands such as Sebastian Bach, Fuel, LA Guns, Kix, and Jackyl just to name a few. They were also given the opportunity to play three different shows this past month as part of the Gettysburg Bike Week. One thing for sure, each and every time they perform, they put on one heck of a show. Not only do they rock out and sound like all of your favorite 80s metal hair bands, but they look the part too. They understand that you need to have lots of high energy and a big show! You need it all, screaming, lights, fog, and ripping guitar solos, and trust me... Time Bomb does have it all and then some. I was one of the lucky ones that got to see them perform at Tubby’s. It was awesome to see them play on that nice big stage. I couldn’t believe how high Brian can jump, all while ripping through some crazy guitar solos, he doesn’t even miss a note! Tas is so much fun to watch, talk about tons of energy, that guy is everywhere, on and off the stage. Todd and Louis work together flawlessly to keep the beat moving and laying down those bass lines. I know a lot of bands claim that they have a great stage presence, but no one compares to these guys! August, 2017

Todd Williams They’ve even recently started adding some original songs to their set list. Writing their originals is a collaborative effort, they already have five originals that they play, and more in the works. They have plans to start recording at The Kaleidoscope in Lancaster so they can have an EP out real soon. They love covering plenty of different artists from the 80s, but there is nothing quite as awesome as playing their own songs and seeing their fans reactions. Time Bomb plays a lot of crowd favorites. They try and accommodate as many requests from their fans as they possibly can. They even learned a very rockin’ rendition to one of your Johnny Cash favorites! They are always encouraging their fans to participate, they even invite some of them to come up and help play or sing when they see a fellow musician in the crowd. They don’t have egos, they just want to make sure their fans are having a good time! One thing Time Bomb always tries not to do is over-saturate any one area. They try and spread their gigs out as much as possible so they can bring out as many fans as possible. This month they have shows all around the midstate and beyond. They start the month at The Stables in Westminster, MD, then they head to Gettysburg Rocks on the 11th, Racehorse Tavern on Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

Summertime live music activity continues at a frenzied clip, with concerts, festivals, fairs, celebrations and other various events and occasions providing plentiful music both outdoors and indoors! Outdoor music events have kept my life crazy in recent weeks. I took in two days of Johnstown’s 20th annual Thunder In The Valley motorcycle rally in late June. First attending on Thursday of Thunder weekend, I arrived in time to catch part of Norman Nardini’s performance at People’s Natural Gas Park. Flanked by his cast of Harry Bottoms on bass, Larry Siefers on keys, sax and harmonica, and Mike Floccari on drums; Norman mixed a smorgasbord of blues, rock, soul and country-toned original songs, dropping in generous dosages of his trademark humor and wit. Along the way, Norman welcomed renowned local guitar-wielding guests Felix Kos (of the Hurricanes) and Gene Sweeney (of Who’s Your Daddy) to work their respective six-string magic. Following Norman on the same stage was Johnstown trio Van Waylon, who fired up their blend of classic rock staples from the 1970s through 1990s. Singer/bassist Todd Harteis again showed a gritty, soulful voice, while guitarist Sebastian Steele displayed his axeslinging prowess and Ben Ressler’s driving beats propelled forward songs from Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, Alice Cooper, Bad Company and more. I next headed to the Train Station stage, where Inside Out closed out the night with their fiery brand of modern, classic rock and originals – with some unexpected surprises thrown in. The catalyst for the surprises was 11-year-old guest drummer Alex Shumaker, who coaxed Inside Out to perform a few songs outside of their hard-rocking comfort zone. The result was rare Inside Out renditions of Fallout Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down,” Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and Walk the Moon’s
“Shut Up and Dance.” But not to fear – singer/guitarist Tim Frick, bassist Larz Philip, new guitarist Cody Williams and drummer Mark Gindlesperger kept their rocking fan base happy with original tunes such as “Vampire Eyes,” “Giving Myself Away” and even their ‘90s-era original rocker “Can’t Stop a One Way Ride,” along with tunes from Disturbed, AC/ DC, Marilyn Manson, Three Days Grace and more. I then returned for much of Saturday’s Thunder In The Valley slate, arriving to catch the last several songs of Second Wind’s performance on the Central Park gazebo stage. This western PA-based band of Riches – Bell on guitar and vocals, Howard on guitar, fiddle and vocals, Kost on bass and Resslar on drums – did nice work on classic, southern rock and country favorites. For their finale, Rich Howard took the spotlight, displaying fiery fiddle work on renditions of Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Orange Blossom Special.” I then headed to the Biker Mall stage to see Nate Myers & the Aces in their first Thunder appearance. Namesake Nate singing and wailing on harmonica, guitarist/singer Jimmi Sexton, bassist Pete Netznik and drummer Kenny Ross mixed up R&B, funk, soul and swing sounds as they did original songs and select cover material. Nate sang and delivered play-by-play on original song favorites “Jager and Waffles” and his canine ode “Sparky Come Home,” and introduced the new song “Got a Job” from the group’s forthcoming album; and he and the Aces gave their signature flavor to renditions of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Louis Prima’s “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” and Bobby Blue Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light.” From there, I returned to the Central Park stage to see Krazy Kat Daddies as they performed vintage pop, rock and country favorites. Singer Jo Ann Nardelli, drummer Mike Nardelli, guitarist Vic Sabo and bassist Gary Faidley sparked dancing in front of the stage with hits from the Surfaris, CCR, Tommy James, Wilson Pickett, Elvis Presley, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more. Then back to the Biker Mall stage (yes, I got my cardio in during this event!), where the Stone Bridge Blues Band had begun. Singer/guitarist Mike Borstnar, bassist/singer Brian Moore, keyboardist Harold Hayford, harmonica player Rick Rhodes and drummer John Mundy generated bluesy grooves

Guest sax player Greg Maiocco helped stir up instrumental fireworks when he dueled with Mike and Rick on Albert Collins’ “Love Me Like You Say” and Freddie King’s “I’m Tore Down.” I then headed to the People’s Natural Gas Park stage to discover Pittsburgh country performers The Stickers. Brothers Joe Wodarek on lead vocals, John Wodarek on bass and Jim Wodarek on drums, plus guitarist Mike Ofca and keyboardist Jay Casper, fired up line dancing with their upbeat set of country original songs and select covers. One highlight was their popular song “Girl in a Pickup Truck,” which will be featured in the new movie “Pure Country Pure Heart”; they also did songs such as “Summertime” and “Country Proud,” plus a version of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home.” I later returned to this same stage to see Shades Of June close out the night; sisters Jill and Leah Gontkovic joined the group as they performed rock and pop favorites. In between The Stickers and Shades Of June, I saw Thunder In The Valley Saturday headliners 38 Special rock the crowd at the Train Station stage. Don Barnes, guitarist Danny Chauncey, keyboardist Bobby Capps, drummer Gary Moffatt and bassist Barry Dunaway – fired up the crowd with hits and favorites from throughout their career. 38 Special delivered constant energy and tight execution as they performed numbers such as “Back Where You Belong,” “Wild Eyed Southern Boys,” “Second Chance,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One” and more. Kicking off with a take on Bad Company’s “Live for the Music,” the group strung together a lengthy medley of favorites that included “20th Century Fox,” “Back to Paradise,” “Sound of Your Voice,” “Somebody Like You,” “Honky Tonk Dancer,” “Teacher Teacher” and “You Keep Runnin’ Away.” A rendition of ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” led into a guitar solo display by Danny, followed by “Trooper with an Attitude” and a Gary drum solo – all setting up for the set-closing hit “Caught Up in You.” When the Thunder crowd demanded an encore, 38 Special returned to do three more – “Chain Lightning,” the hit “Hold On Loosely,” and a roaring rendition of CCR’s “Travelin’ Band.” Besides 38 Special, I saw another legendary southern rock/ country name recently – Charlie Daniels headlined last month’s 43rd annual Country Music Show fundraiser for the Indiana County Fraternal Order of Police, which took place at the Indiana County Fairgrounds. Johnstown-based Johnny Cash/June Carter tribute group Ole 97 set the joyous tone for the afternoon. This group’s “Johnny” and “June” – singers Randy Hunter and Charlene Boldin – led the group as they celebrated ‘The Man In Black’ and June Carter with hits and curios from throughout Cash’s career. Randy, Charlene, guitarist/fiddler Joe Brucker, guitarist Doug Nagy, bassist Andy Heinze and drummer Paul Carpenter did Cash standards such as “I Walk the Line,” “Ring of Fire,” “I’ve Been Everywhere” and the setclosing “Folsom Prison Blues.” Randy and Charlene recalled the Johnny-June duets on “Long-Legged Guitar Pickin’ Man” and “Baby Ride Easy,” and Charlene sang lead on “Juke Box Blues.” Ole 97 dedicated the gospel-toned “Peace in the Valley” to all police and military personnel who gave their lives in the line of duty, and they did Joe’s original Cash-themed number, “Whole Lot of Cash.” Ole 97’s happy and reverent celebration of Johnny and June drew unanimous applause as they warmed up the huge grandstand crowd. Then, with the “Tennessee Waltz” playing through the sound system, Charlie Daniels and his band arrived on the stage. At age 80, Charlie showed no signs of slowing down as he and his band took charge from the get-go, opening with “Southern Boy” and “Drinkin’ My Baby Goodbye.” Charlie sawed on his fiddle early, and introduced “Redneck Fiddlin’ Man,” before switching off to guitar for two songs off his landmark 1974 album “Fire On The Mountain”, “Trudy” and “Caballo Diablo.” Charlie frequently celebrate”d his sidemen, and let guitarist Bruce Brown sing and take the spotlight on his own original song “Peace in the Morning.” He also spotlighted guitarist Chris Wormer’s shredding skills on a heated rendition of the “William Tell Overture” toward show’s end, and showcased the talents of keyboardist Shannon Wickline, bassist Charlie Hayward and drummer Ron Gannaway on the instrumental jam “Black Ice.” Charlie frequently addressed the audience between songs; saluting the troops and sharing his sentiments about a strong America before his hit “In America,” sharing the inspiration behind his spooky hit “The Legend of Wooley Swamp,” and humbly acknowledging how “Long Haired Country Boy” escalated into a fan favorite. He also related his early career as a session player who got hired to play guitar on Bob Dylan’s 1969 Nashville Skyline album, prompting his rendition of Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” Charlie saluted Johnny Cash with his band’s own take on “Folsom Prison Blues,” and offered a reverent, escalating version of “How Great Thou Art.” And to end the show, Charlie brandished fiddle again to recall his epic “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” dueling and jamming with his bandmates for a feverish finish to a great show. Set to achieve the 90-year-old milestone early next year, the man who first taught me what treble and bass clefs, rests and quarter-notes are – my childhood accordion teacher Mario Crocetti – is still booking shows and entertaining audiences with his self-named trio. I checked out the Mario Crocetti Trio in action during the Lilly Fire Company Carnival in late June. Playing his Siwa & Figli accordion, Mario wasn’t even the eldest member of his own band this night, as singer Jack Dominick is already at the 90 mark, and still has a good singing voice! variety of pop, jazz and country standards, polkas and even renditions of Elvis Presley’s “It’s Now or Never” and “Don’t Be Cruel!” The group also did favorites from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Boots Randolph, Glenn Miller, Jim Reeves, Tom Jones, Louis Armstrong and more. And Mario and his trio broke out a few tunes I remember from long ago when I had to learn those songs for weekly accordion lessons – I’m now going to have to dig into my old “Sedlon Accordion Method” music books to relearn and find out what they were! Arts festivals were plentiful in recent weeks, including the 51st annual Central PA Festival of the Arts in downtown State College. I attended and witnessed several of the Saturday entertainers this year, beginning with Pure Cane Sugar at the Festival Shell stage. Vocal harmonies were again front and center of this group’s performance, as singer Natalie Race and singer/acoustic guitarist Kate Twoey blended their voices with stunning results. They, along with guitarist Jason “Junior” Tutwiler, bassist Bob Hart and drummer Daryl Branford triggered fun vibes and plentiful hula-hooping with their mix of original songs and inventive takes on favorites. The group
introduced newer original songs such as “Box n’Nails” and their new single “Crazy,” as well as innovative takes on Tears for Fears’ “Shout,” Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul” and more. Next on the same stage was Nora Jane Struthers & the Party Line. Since the first time I saw them a few years ago, this group has evolved their brand of Americana-flavored music to mix traditional folk and bluegrass roots with country, rock, gospel and other elements. Singing and strumming acoustic guitar, Nora Jane and the Party Line – her husband and multiinstrumentalist Joe Overton, guitarist Josh Vana, bassist Brian Miller and drummer Drew Lanhorn – did a variety of folk, country and bluegrass-toned original songs and select covers. She tapped newer and older material, doing an upbeat arrangement of the title track to her 2013 album “Carnival”, and new songs from her next album, to be released in October. Nora and the Party Line also did versions of the Staple Singers’ “We’ve Got to Get Ourselves Together” and Guy Clark’s “Texas Cookin.’” From there, I headed to the Sidney Friedman Park stage to catch the last few songs of Velveeta’s performance. These Happy Valley favorites – singer/guitarist Brian Kriley, keyboardist/singer Brent Martin, bassist/singer John Matthews and drummer/singer John Harper – had a brisk dance party going as they finished up with favorites from The Foundations, Neil Diamond, the B-52s and Bryan Adams. I then returned to the Festival Shell for that stage’s final act, Pittsburgh’s Billy Price Band. Still possessing a strong and soulful voice and presence, Billy and his band – this night saxophonist Eric DeFade, guitarist Steve Delach, bassist Tom Valentine, keyboardist Jimmy Britton, drummer Dave Dodd and trumpet player George Amer – took the audience on a spirited rhythm and blues joyride. Opening with two songs from his new live CD “Alive and Strange” – “Ain’t a Juke Joint Without the Blues” into “Lickin’ Stick” – Billy and the group played songs from throughout his library, including more from the new CD such as “Something Strange,” “This Time I’m Done for Good,” “One More Day” and “Never Get Enough.” Billy’s spark was constant, and his band was tight and in the pocket, with Eric, Jimmy, Steve and Dave each providing stellar solo work along the way. After this performance, I caught the tail ends of both The Ultra Kings’ set at the Allen Street stage and Jackie Brown & the Gill Street Band (more on them later) at the Sidney Friedman Park stage to cap my Arts Festival experience. During the same week, the 25th annual People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts took place on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg. Attending on the first day, Thursday, I saw two performances. State College’s Bluegrass Redemption performed on the South Stage shortly after I arrived. This group – singer/guitarist Rick Auhl, fiddler/singer Jane Auhl, banjo picker/singer Keith Miska, upright bassist Mike Bratton and mandolin player George Macias – entertained with a mix of traditional bluegrass, folk and country, with a few surprises thrown in. from George Jones, Pete Seeger, Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton and more; they also did a grassed-up version of Steve Winwood’s “Back in the High Life Again.” Afterward, I headed to the North Stage to catch part of ESP’s performance. Featuring singer/bassist Pat Elliott, guitarist/singer Ralf Southard, guitarist/singer Jerre Price and singer/multiinstrumentalist Eileen Christman, ESP demonstrated strong vocals and harmonies plus instrumental dexterity as they did classic rock gems from the 1970s. The group opened with the Crosby Stills & Nash double-shot of “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” and “Wasted On The Way,” the Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” and Toto’s “Africa.” I also attended the first day of the annual Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival, which took place at Twin Lakes Park near Greensburg in late June. A variety of live music was offered on four stages during this festival; the first performer I witnessed was Eirinn Abu on the Laurel stage. A Grammy-nominated saxophone artist who has worked with Miami Sound Machine and Dolly Parton, Eirinn performed a selection of instrumental adult contemporary
numbers. Citing Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble and Kenny G as influences, Eirinn explained his performance philosophy as singing through his saxophone. He demonstrated a smooth, gentle style as he performed movie themes from Romeo & Juliet, Titanic and other films, versions of Elvis Presley’s “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You,” “How Great Thou Art” and more. I next headed to the Island stage to catch my first look at the Bad Boy Blues Band. Formed in 2012, this Greensburg-based group – singer/guitarist Bob Boyle, guitarist Vinnie DeFloria, bassist Ned Stokes and drummer Mike Sheffler – performed a rowdy mixture of electric blues, classic rock and original songs. Their original song selection mixed newer numbers with tunes from their debut album “Temptation’s Calling;” they also did numbers

After performing and directing the theatrical production “Always Patsy Cline” more than a decade ago, Cathi started her tribute to Patsy’s

legacy, and regularly performs throughout western PA. Cathi gave background information about Patsy’s career, while performing many of Patsy’s songs such as “In Care of the Blues,” “Leavin’ on Your Mind,” “Stop, Look and Listen,” “Anytime” and more. And back at the Island stage, I watched Washington, D.C.’s Black Masala perform their worldbeatdriven sounds. Seven members strong including a brass section, Black Masala mixed elements of Slavic, Balkan, funk, punk, reggae and more into an energetic, unpredictable presentation. No two songs were the same, and the group’s multiple angles, vocal and instrumental diversity made this a fun show. The July 4 holiday brought another edition of Central PA 4th Fest, which took place around Penn State’s Beaver Stadium. Again, a number of musical performers entertained leading up to one of the biggest fireworks displays in the Northeast. I continued on next page...

arrived in time to see the last three songs of former “The Voice” contestant Adley Stump’s performance. Adley and her band performed her new single, “Call You Mine,” before displaying her rocking persona with the AC/DC double-shot of “Highway to Hell” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.” I then saw Jackie Brown & the Gill Street Band present their highenergy, brass-edged mixture of funk, soul and R&B. Namesake Jackie was front and center, energizing the large audience with her vibrant, hearty voice and stage presence – flanked by keyboardist/singer John “JT” Thompson, guitarist/singer Charles Halcomb, bassist Peter Jogo, drummer Stubby Stubbs, and the four-piece horn section of sax players Tom Gallagher and Benjamin Kim, trumpet player Richard Meyer and trombone player Dave Priester. Highlights were numerous, as Jackie and Gill Street roused the crowd with hits from Average White Band, Marvin Gaye, Donna Summer, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and more. And Jackie doesn’t just sing; at one point, she went behind the drum kit to capably provide the beat on a few songs. And just before the fireworks began, I caught the last several songs of Velveeta’s set, as they triggered a dance party with hits from Dave Matthews Band, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Styx, Old Crow Medicine Show and more. Also on July 4th weekend, I caught up with Ricky Lee and his band as they entertained partiers on the Bistro Deck at Lake Raystown Resort. This was a fun night as Ricky – flanked

by bandmates Chip and C’Jay Castello on guitars, Dave Collins on bass and new drummer Rob Bonsell – sang a mixture of his original songs, country and southern/classic rock favorites. Ricky sang popular patriotic odes such as “She’s an American Soldier,” introduced new tunes such as “Something About You,” and performed favorites from Big & Rich, Old Crow Medicine Show, Brooks & Dunn, Travis Tritt, Kid Rock, Luke Bryan, George Jones, John Mellencamp and more. Ricky’s hearty voice was in good form, and he had fun with the crowd and kept them involved in the show. He celebrated his parents in the audience, and saluted his father, a cancer survivor. He also honored several requests from the packed-deck crowd. An obvious highlight was the fireworks display over Lake Raystown in between Ricky’s sets, with the band resuming the music as the fireworks concluded. Ricky and his band return to the Lake Raystown Bistro Deck on Sept. 3 (Labor Day weekend). Altoona’s Railroaders Museum stayed busy in recent weeks with several more installments of their Alive @ 5 Concert Series. New Jersey-based Tom Petty tribute Damn the Torpedoes graced the Museum’s flatcar stage in late June, with Agent Smith opening. With special fifth agent Rich Johnson helping out on guitar, Agent Smith accomplished their mission of rocking the rail yard crowd with a blend of hard-rocking favorites from the 1970s through 1990s. They did excellent work on tunes from Living Colour, Stone Temple Pilots, Queensryche, Tonic, Fuel, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Van Halen, The Cult and more. Guest Autumn Shiffler joined in to belt out her superb voice on versions of Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen” and Alanis Morisette’s “You Oughta Know.” Damn the Torpedoes then followed, bringing the maximum Tom Petty music party for two sets. Five members strong, Damn the Torpedoes blended Petty hits and deep cuts from throughout the group’s career. Frontman Rich Kubicz was strong in the role of Tom Petty; his voice and presentation captured Petty’s style and sound. The rest of the group – guitarist Jimi Alan, keyboardist Gary Castelluccio, bassist Jon Provan and drummer Ross Kantor – were solid as well, nicely capturing the Petty-like arrangements. Most of the essential Petty catalog was performed: “I Won’t Back Down,” “Listen to Her Heart,” “I Need to Know,” “Running Down a

and drummer Jeff Clemens were tight and convincing in the Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. roles respectively. This group was invested in their U2 catalog, and did exceptional work on U2 canons such as “I Will Follow,” “Beautiful Day,” “Mysterious Ways,” “Vertigo,” “Pride (in the Name of Love),” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “Bullet the Blue Sky” and more. They closed their first of two sets with a Joshua Tree miniset that included “Red Hill Mining Town,” “With or Without You” and “One Tree Hill.” Another highlight was “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” where Michael used his own version of the Bono ‘rant’ to honor veterans and military personnel, and encourage the audience to pressure lawmakers to work harder for legislation to support veterans and their families. In lieu of an encore, U2 By UV thanked the audience before doing their final two songs, “Until the End of the World” and “One Love.” The Alive @ 5 Concert Series concludes Aug. 4 with Styx tribute Rockin’ the Paradise and Teazed. They kept the momentum going, and attracted more cheers as their performance progressed. U2 By UV soon took the stage, and proceeded to open eyes and ears with their stunning depiction of U2, as they played hits and deep cuts from the U2 catalog, with special emphasis on The Joshua Tree album. Singer Michael Schmidt delivered a convincing voice as ‘Bono,’ and offered personality and charisma to match. PA MUSICIAN MAGAZINE CD REVIEWS Reviewed by Jim Price THE COMMONHEART – “GROWN” (no label) Formed in 2014 by singer Clinton Clegg and drummer Shawn McGregor, The Commonheart has quickly evolved into one of Pittsburgh’s most exciting exports to the music world, and their debut album, Grown, offers clear testimony as to why. Eight members strong including backing singers and a horn section, The Commonheart merges rock, blues and soul flavors with a gospel fervor over Grown’s 11 tracks. Front and center throughout the album, Clegg sings, barks and growls with a rugged voice that recalls peak period Joe Cocker and Bob Seger, mixed with the fervor and intensity of a classic fire-andbrimstone preacher. Mike Minda’s lead guitar work, Lucas Bowman’s keys and guest Skip Sanders’ organ work, and tight rhythms from McGregor and bassist Ava Lintz pack punch behind the songs, while trumpeter Nate Insko and saxophonist Elyse Louise provide just the right brass accents in the right places. The resulting sound often recalls classic 1960s/1970s-era Memphis and Motown with a hearty punch. The disc-opening “Who Dat Mama” sets the tone with a bold, swaggering groove; while “Hard Way” sets a funkier pace. Riding along a prominent bass drum beat, hand claps and some sharp slide guitar work, “Aloysius” builds into a boisterous, gospel-flavored eruption. The Commonheart delivers some stunning slower numbers as well, such as the soulful and bluesy “Cannonball” with its escalating arrangement, the slow-building soul thunderstorm “You Need a Man” and the search for salvation “Save Me.” Mikey Deluca’s acoustic guitar picking backs Clegg on two thoughtful numbers, “Rivertown” and the disc-ending “Spain,” and the group gives a feisty and funky update to Al Green’s classic “I’m a Ram.” The performances are bold and energetic, as the band plays for keeps and Clegg sinks intensity and personality into every song. The arrangements are captivating and dynamic, and the production enables the group to retain edge and fullness. Grown is an exciting debut album that taps classic soul roots and channels them into a fresh, invigorating celebration. This album proudly establishes The Commonheart as a force to be reckoned with. MARSHMELLOW OVERCOAT – “MARSHMELLOW OVERCOAT” (no label) Singer and songwriter Tyler Calkins in 2008 began his journey of exploring the songwriting styles of the 1960s and 1970s. That exploration led to the formation of his band vehicle, Marshmellow Overcoat. The Bradford-based group’s self-titled fifth album continues the journey, as Calkins (who sings and plays guitar, piano and harmonica), guitarist Alan Hancock, bassist Jason Wood and drummer Anthony Cavallaro craft catchy numbers rooted in 1960s and 1970s pop songcraft, particularly the Beatles and the Monkees, blended with a contemporary indiepop edge. Marshmellow Overcoat’s brand of “classic rock for today” is defined by mostly short,

punchy, efficient melodies with quick-hitting hooks and payoff choruses, brought forth by Calkins’ raspy, almost Lennon-like lead vocal and the group’s tight, balanced backdrops. Mostly written by Calkins, the lyrics tend toward contemplative and even psychedelic themes. He sings about music as a soaring journey on “Tune of the Turning World,”, and waxes abstract on “Wander and They Fly.” The group lyrically reveals the origin of their name on the title song “Marshmellow Overcoat,” which classic rockers The Band almost used for their own name. Several songs explore the cosmic effects of the ups and

downs of love; “The Room Spins Around” muses about the dizzying effects of love, while “Snow Lights” and “River of Stars” explore love’s bliss. However, signals get crossed on “See the Plan,” and broken love is left behind on “I Can’t Help You Anymore” and “Back to Earth.” Marshmellow Overcoat also offers their spin on the traditional number “Cold Rain and Snow” as one of two bonus tracks (the other is a piano version of “Tune of the Turning World”). The performances are tight and the song arrangements are consistent, giving the album a comfortable, even flow from start to end. Recorded and mixed by Rick Gercak at College Park Recorders near Pittsburgh, Marshmellow Overcoat sounds basic and smooth, with the instruments sounding distinct and Calkins’ words ringing through clean and clear. Marshmellow Overcoat understands their musical turf on this album, and again successfully merges classic pop rock songcraft with a fresh, contemporary edge. LAIKA, THE ASTRO-HOUND – “KAIROS” (My Idea Of Fun) Named after the famous Soviet canine that became the first animal to orbit the Earth, Johnstown-based foursome Laika, the Astro-Hound explores death and the emotions surrounding it on their latest full-length album, Kairos. Featuring singer, keyboardist and chief songwriter Sean T. Jackson, bassist/ singer Dallas Zimmerman, guitarist Matthew Shawley and drummer/electronics performer Gerald Mattis; Laika, the Astro-Hound presents a piano-driven, modern rock/ pop sound that recalls the alternative piano rock of Ben Folds Five, as well as the progressive/ ambient flavorings of Radiohead and Porcupine Tree. After experiencing the death of his sister, mother, and other friends and relatives, Sean’s lyrics ponder the grieving process, reflections and realizations about appreciating quality time with loved ones. Sean considers the hereafter and where souls go on the opening track “Can You Hear Me,” and the passage of time and life on “End of All Things.” Sean uses a somber Pink Floyd-like vibe to explore symbolism and metaphor on “Family Tree,” and recounts childhood grieving and spiritual awakening on the dreamy “Died at Five.” A space-rock arrangement propels “Life & Nature’s Little Nuances,” and Sean’s lesson about appreciating life’s little things. “Impermanence” realizes that everything is temporary in this world, while “Phone-line to Heaven” yearns to communicate with those who have left us. The songs are intelligent, captivating and cleverly arranged, with Sean’s piano and soaring voice weaving prominent threads through the entire set. His words communicate both his sense of loss, as well as his epiphanies about the cycle of life. Self-recorded and produced, Kairos sounds spontaneous and loose, allowing space for the performances to breathe and stretch with only minimal studio gloss. Laika, the Astro-hound delivers a thoughtful and cohesive set with Kairos, an album of insight and enlightenment that reminds listeners to cherish moments with loved ones and to share love while you are here to do so. THEIR MUSIC & MEMORIES LIVE ON... COLIN McATEE Colin McAtee, the bass player for Centre County heavy metal rockers It Is Written, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 2 in Florida at age 35. It Is Written was in the middle of a performance tour of southern states at the time of Colin’s passing, and cancelled their remaining show dates. A Bellefonte native, Colin also worked for the Centre Housing Authority and Home Delivery Pizza. He will be remembered for his love of music, and for helping out others after overcoming obstacles in his own life. GARY MATOLYAK Gary Matolyak, who owned Ace’s Lounge in Johnstown until 2014, passed away on July 4 at age 65. Gary oversaw the rise of Ace’s into one of the Johnstown area’s most prominent venues, which hosted concerts, wedding and funeral receptions, and other special events. Gary sold and stepped away from Ace’s in 2014 due to health issues. MICHAEL NOLL Michael Noll, who played drums for various rock and blues bands throughout central PA, passed away on July 18. He was 59. A New Jersey native, Michael was a drummer for much of his life, and performed for such groups as Nate Myers & the Aces, Jason Ricci & New Blood, Jon Pyle, Voodoo Love Hounds, Wild Horse and more. Michael also worked in the computer field as an IT developer. PAT COLYER A longtime bass player on the Altoona area music scene before relocating to Florida, Pat Colyer passed away on July 11 in Daytona Beach, Florida from kidney failure. He was 58. Pat played bass for several Altoona area bands in the late 1970s and 1980s, including The Toyz, the Rolling Rockers and others.
