ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
It’s a great day. After doing a job for 30 plus years one starts to wonder if one (meaning me) should be doing something else. For some reason that is what has been going on in my mind lately. It makes it hard to keep your mojo going and get your “job” done in a timely fashion. As a result I have the weekend to think about such things as I missed my print time (once again) and they rescheduled me according to my past history (smile) which hasn’t been timely. But life goes on. One thing nice is I’ll be able to spend some quality time with Mason Boob, my grandson whose birthday it is on the 5th. We have a hot date tonight, Friday the 2nd as his mom is taking his brother to see Five Finger Death Punch. We’ll all have fun. There is a lot going on throughout Pennsylvania in the music industry, it’s not what it “use to be” but it is, what is. As I gather information for each issue and as my email gets filled with request upon request to write about or give press to the multitude of projects: new releases, new bands, new music, shows, benefits, tours, big projects, small projects etc. It totally blows my mind and I know that although the music scene isn’t what it was it is still vital and it is full of growth and activity as musicians and creative individuals strive to express themselves through music and art. Rachel alone saw 14 bands in one month’s time. Read Jim Price’s article and try to figure out how he can see so many shows and performers in one month —I dare you. So, as usual, in our pages we strive to promote those who keep us alive with their hard earned cash because we are solely supported by our advertisers and we need that money to keep going. We don’t have grants or donations (donations would be nice). We do have another paper, The Shopper’s Remedy, which i solely do on my own, sell ads, answer the phone, gather the info, design ads, design the paper, put it together. So I keep busy (I’m not so good at the business end. I like the creative part more) and I’m also a bit of a control freak (don’t tell my kids). That’s how it is in the music business and in any business where we are striving to “Do it Ourselves” (DIY). Speaking of small businesses that are doing it on their own, there are several music stores throughout Pennsylvania who need your support this holiday season before you go to a “Big Box” store. These stores are loaded with gear and great equipment for the music lover in your family.
Mike’s Music located in Harrisburg by the Colonial Park Mall, come off the highway going right. Mike’s specialty is pick ups at great prices. Mike ships all over the world. Players Exchange located in Lemoyne is for those who are into historical fines and high quality and vintage gear. Scott, the owner, is great friends with Shea Quinn and they are in “The Band Who Sold the World” a project that performs the ultimate David Bowie tribute. They started this project before David Bowie had passed. They have performed it a few times and are only doing select performances but I hear it is amazing. Scott is amazing on bass plus other instruments. Bernie’s in Hershey has a great selection of the newest gear and Joe, the owner is super nice and will give you the attention if you need help in getting that special gift. Creter Guitar Shop is totally amazing. Matt is a true craftsmen and an awesome guitarist. He has some amazing gear enclosed in glass shelves that will make your jaw drop. He will make sure you leave his store with musical gear that is ready to go. Matt is located in Jonestown in the hub of that small community. Noteworthy Guitars in Mechanicsburg is stocked full of new gear and everything you can possibly need. Ed just opened this year and has a coupon in our pages where you can save up to 15%. Ed is also a musician who knows the musicians need to find that perfect instrument that has the quality, tone and feel to achieve the sound that enhances one’s music. Woodshed Guitar Works in Carlisle is another great shop for musical gear and quality repair work and ability to set up your guitar. There’s more to buying a guitar than buying one and playing it right away, it actually needs to be set up with the right strings and some adjustments. I don’t know all the details but Chris does at Woodshed. Chris also performs in Smokin Gunnz and Single Barrel. He’s another busy DIY guy. If you want to take a walk back in history head to Guitars on George. Jerry Duncan is a serious collector and another great musician with loads of stories based on fact. He knows his stuff and his gear. His store is small but your appetite for musical gear will build as you stand in his store. John Donavan owns Yin Yang Music in Wilburton and is serving that small community so you don’t have to wait until you travel miles to purchase your musical gear or get lessons. John is a musician himself so he understands your needs to feed that musical gear beast that dwells in all music lovers hearts. He always has great deals and contest so stop by and see what he has to offer. Schoolhouse Music actually started in a one room schoolhouse but has actually moved to a bigger location between Bloomsburg and Danville. He is located at 1906 Motor Boulevard, Dan-
ville. Schoolhouse opened their doors in 1983 and has advertised with us every month and has paid us every month for 33 years! It’s people like Scott that keep these pages coming to you month after month. Guitar Villa located in Bethlehem has everything you need. I was on their website and they have an amazing owner John J. Slog, who has a history on the music scened that will astound you. They have musicians working at Guitar Villa that will make sure what you purchase will provide the music you need. My goal this year is to have each of the music store owners on our cover with their stories being told to encourage you to support these local businesses that need your business. Also at each of these stores you can pick up your new monthly copy of the Pennsylvania Musician magazine. Thank you to all of you guys who support us each and every month. I do love what I have the privilege to do in serving the music community I just wish I could do it better and more timely (smile). WOW, what a beautiful sunrise this morning.

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
It’s hard to believe it’s already time to write the last article of 2016. Time sure does fly when you’re having fun and even when you’re not. Thanks to all of the amazing talent that was willing to play over the very fun and yet very crazy Thanksgiving holiday, I was able to squeeze in a bunch of bands this month. Nothing to it, but to get to it, so here goes… The first show of the month started a very long time ago, back at the end of October

Take 147 with their “Takers” at Tubby’s
when Take 147 took the stage again!!! I am thrilled to say they are back and ready to rock. Unfortunately, Princess Patty Wilson chose to move on to a new project, but even tho they are huge shoes to fill, Scott Kinsey took the throne behind the kit and got the ladies rockin’ again! It turns out I wasn’t the only one that missed them because Tubby’s was PACKED. It was great to see they had Frayed Nott open the show for them which was a huge opportunity for them. Hopefully they gained some new fans in the process. I missed Frayed Nott, but heard they rocked the stage once again. I know Take 147 definitely rocked it! People were singing and dancing along and it was like they never left. They definitely learned a lot of new material and they had all of the wrinkles ironed out and the rocked the night away. During their set break Ro even broke out an original solo! We were all so proud of her, and she killed it! Great job Ro! If you never heard Ro sing, you are truly missing out. They are only going to be playing about once every quarter so mark your calendars now for their next show, January 27th, at Gullifty’s in New Cumberland. The next night I headed out for a new adventure to Pete’s in New Cumberland for Natalie Darkes. I thought it was just an acoustic night, but she also had a keyboard player and a percussionist with her. The three of them played quite a few songs that my friend Michelle and I could easily sing along too. We had a great night just catching up and listening to some great music. Pete’s is definitely a tight spot for a whole band to set up, but they managed to all squeeze in there. There were also quite a few people jammed in the bar area bopping along to the music. It’s always fun checking out new places and bands with my friend Michelle. We just never know what our next adventure will get us into. To find out where Natalie is playing next, check out her schedule in this issue. After I dropped Michelle off at her place, it was time to head up to Tubby’s. I’ve heard a lot about JJGun, and finally had some time to go check them out. Unfortunately by the time I got there I missed the Jukehouse Bombers. They played for us at the Millennium Music Conference on our acoustic stage and I loved them! I was bummed I missed their rockin’ set on the big stage. When I got there JJGunn was already playing. They were trying something new and different, they were actually auditioning keyboard players at the show. They would play a few songs with one keyboard player and then they’d switch it up. JohnyB is a great singer and guitar player. He kept the night flowing smoothly. A couple of times they would go off on a crazy jam session, but that in itself was pretty awesome. I can’t imagine being those keyboard players, auditioning with a new band has to be intense in itself, but playing in front of a crowd would’ve been too overwhelming for me. I never heard who the new “official” keyboard player is, but you couldn’t go wrong with either of the guys I heard playing. The next night I headed up to Perry County for a Halloween Party at The Facktory in Liverpool. It was a private party with just a DJ, but what an amazing space! If you are looking for a place for a private party, or even a cool spot to record some songs, the Facktory is the place for you. It has plenty of free parking, it used to be an old sewing factory, but now it’s just a huge hollowed out room. He has a kitchen area for serving food/drinks, a stage, huge dance floor, ping pong and other fun games, and even an in-

door basketball area. He also has a “bunk room” if you need to stay overnight. Brent, the owner is super accommodating. If you are trying to set up a special event and tired of the same old rooms, give Brent a call, 717-444-3141. The Facktory will be hosting Toys for Tots on December 11th. It’s an All Age Event sponsored by Nino’s Bistro and us, the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. The cost is $5 or one unwrapped toy for a boy or girl. Check the ad out for all the details. It’s a great event if you want to enjoy some live music with your kids for a great cause. After the Halloween Party on the way home, I stopped for the last half of Back in Black at Tubby’s. I’ve been busy every time they’ve come to town lately, so I’m glad our schedules finally fell in line again. It was the first time I saw Dan playing the lead guitar for the whole show. Man oh days, that kid has energy!! Back in Black never disappoints, it’s always one heck of a show. Tony even seems like he’s picked up his energy on the stage, keeping up with Dan. It was a great night of music as usual. I was glad to see a great crowd out supporting Back in Black, it’s definitely well deserved. This past month Nick Meyers celebrated 10 Years of 717 Entertainment. To celebrate he had 2 nights of amazing music at Gullifty’s. I was busy for most of it, but I did catch the tail end. I made it just in time for the reunion of Rhea Silvia. 8 years ago in the days of myspace I absolutely loved these guys, and I still do. Jason Barshinger, Mike Adams, and Cory McClain are an amazing trio. At one point Mike was actually standing on his pedal board with both feet working his pedals while ripping away on a guitar solo! They way they sync on the stage is unbelievable. They unfortunately don’t play out together anymore… Rhea Silvia hit the stage again just for this one special Reunion Show. Unfortunately life happened, Mike moved to Pittsburg, Cory got married, and Jason just officially got engaged, but still plays a lot of solo music every chance he gets. I Void Hidden was personally hoping this would encourage them to get together to play again regularly, but unfortunately they just all live too far apart now. The next band to hit the stage was VoidHidden from Mechanicsburg. They are a new young band with lots of wild energy. They started playing out back in April. Their lead singer has energy that is even a little over the top. He often helps out with the percussion, whether the drummer likes it or not. Keep your eye out for this heavy rock/metal band. They are sneaking their way into the scene. The last band of the night was Observe the 93rd. The day started at 2:30 in the afternoon, so it was impressive to see they still had quite a few people there to support them to the bitter end. It’s awesome to see all of the success Observe the 93rd has had in the past couple of years. They released their latest CD back in June, and have been playing as much as they possibly can. They are always tons of fun to

Out & About continued watch. Derek’s voice is so distinctive and just simply amazing. It’s always a treat when I catch these guys, not only are they amazing musicians, but they are also great guys to hang out with before and after their show. They are an all-around class act! That was the end of 717 Entertainment’s special show. Congrats Nick on surviving 10 years.. It’s definitely not easy, especially in this scene. Nick is having another big show coming up on January 7th at Gullifty’s for his birthday. If you want to see some great regional bands, it would definitely be a great show to check out. My next night out I headed to Ted’s on 22 to see Nate Myers and the Aces. It was my first time to the “new” Ted’s to see a band. When they opened the new location a year ago they put in a little stage and some built in lighting. Honestly when I heard they were putting in a stage I was hoping for a little more, but at least it is something
and at least they are supporting live music. Nate Myers and the Aces were a blast as always. It was awesome to see the whole band rockin’ out and having a good time. They as always had a guest performer come up with them once in a while, this time it was a percussionist that brought along a bag of tricks with shakers, tambourines, etc.. Nate Myers and the Aces just added him right in to the show and let the wild times continue. If you want to have a good night out on the town that will get you up and shakin’ check out their schedule at www.natemyers.com. After hanging with Nate Myers and the Aces for a set I headed out to Double K for Single Barrel. I haven’t seen these guys for a few months, so it was good to catch them Out and About again. They’ve played at Double K a few times now, and it’s cool to see how accepting the Double K crowd is to their songs. They play songs you don’t regularly here on the radio, some people even thing they are originals because they are so off the cuff, but really they are just great songs with amazing lyrics that are so truthful

to the life of today, that society tries to hide them from us! Luckily Single Barrel is out there and willing to introduce us to some of the best rock n’ roll out there. Check out Single Barrel’s ad in this issue to see where they will be rockin’ next. The next night out kicked off my long weekend of Thanksgiving Fun!! For Thanksgiving Eve I started out back at Double K for Smokin Gunnz. If you want to have a big party at Double K, Smokin Gunnz is definitely the band you want. As usual it was packed and crazy with Smokin Gunnz on the stage, even if it was a Wednesday night. I’m just glad my sister was hosting Thanksgiving this year so I had no worries and could rock the night away. Bob and Chris’s harmonies are absolutely amazing and when you add in the harmonies of Chris and Mike’s guitars, it simply blows you away! Rick also got himself a beautiful, new shiny red bass. He was having a blast with it up on the stage playing away! Check out their ad in this issue to see where they will be bringing their deep friend smokin’ southern rock to next! After hanging with Smokin Gunnz for a while I headed over to the Pour House on Derry St. to finish my night with Hot Like Molly. There was all kinds of crazy energy pouring off the stage and dance floor when I got there. They can cover songs from pretty much any generation of music. The range of Jamie Kay’s voice is amazing, I swear that girl can sing just about anything. One thing she didn’t sing that Mark sang was the cover of “Fire Water Burn” by the Bloodhound Gang. I’m pretty sure he created some of his own personal touches on the verses, but the chorus we all got to help sing, and dance along. With Drew, Jamie Kay, and Mark all having wireless equipment they were constantly out interacting and being crazy with the crowd. Doug was stuck behind the kit, but he has so much energy it just pours out from behind the kit and smacks you in the face. Hot Like Molly is a great

Candlelight Red & fans at Tubby’s party band that will be sure to have you up singing and dancing along! After some delicious Thanksgiving Dinner at my sister Andrea’s, and lots of crazy shopping with my good friend Michelle, it was time to get back to the music… Friday night I went to see Candlelight Red at Tubby’s. I haven’t seen these guys in quite a few years, since the lovely Harrisburg Hardware Bar days. They went on a little hiatus for a little while, but I’m glad to say they are back on the road. Needless to say they are just as amazing as ever, if not even more! Their stage presence is unbelievable. With lights, fog, risers, and just crazy motion everywhere, I really don’t know how these guys can play so flawlessly with everything they have going on. It’s pretty cool to see Jeremy and Jamie both have their own techs now taking care of instrument changes. They have lots of Official Music videos on YouTube too.
I’m glad I made it out to see them again. It was well worth the sleep deprived trip. The last band of my crazy Thanksgiving extravaganza was the annual WTPA Birthday Bash with Kix. After hosting Thanksgiving with the in-laws and being exhausted, I still mustered up the energy and made it in time to see Kix take the stage. I don’t know if Steve was feeling his age or not when he was on the stage but he kept mentioning about their first album was from 1981, that is 35 years ago! It’s hard to believe these guys have been rocking that long. It’s also hard to believe Steve can still jump so high in the air and land in a complete split! I mean some of the youngest guys out there can’t do that! My question is, how does he not split his pants?!? Anyway… they might’ve only been on the stage for a little over an hour, but they just fly from song to song. Their latest release has the perfect name, “Rock Your Face Off” because that is what they do the whole time they are on the stage. Once again it was continued on page 14...

one heck of a show to an absolutely packed room! It’s awesome to see there is still plenty of love and support out there for Kix. This week, on December 2nd, I am looking very forward to taking my 14 year old son, Zack, to his first big concert, Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown at the Giant Center. I am very thankful to Stan Levinstone from SLP Concerts, Steve Toepfer from the Madison Ticket Agency, Tim Louie, and everyone else involved that hooked me up with tickets to the show. I’m sure it’s going to be a night to remember. I will be writing all about our experience in my January article. Well that’s all for this month. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Please be safe and don’t drink and drive! Uber is an amazing service that is all over the midstate and beyond. I’ve used the service a few times now and the cool part is if you have to Uber
home at night, you can just Uber right back to get your car in the morning. If you have any questions or comments, you can e-mail me at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. I

Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! The past month stared with the return of garage rockers The Orwells on Nov 1 at Washington DC’s DC9 club. A sold out show of incredible energy to open their brief 10-date tour across the States to the UK. The Chicago based band will release their new album “Terrible Human Beings” on Feb 17. Be sure to check out The Orwells greatest latest single, “They Put a Body in the Bayou.” Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara visited Philadelphia’s Fillmore on Nov 3 as part of their “Love You To Death” worldwide tour. The twin sisters have a career over two decades that has evolved from indie musicians to full blown pop stars. Tegan and Sara have released eight studio albums and numerous EPs. In 1999 they signed with Neil Young’s label Vapor Records and have since toured with Neil Young, The Pretenders, Ryan Adams, The Killers, Katy Perry, Paramore and Weezer among others. A highlight of the month included a trip North to Hummels Wharf, PA where ‘80s metal band Faster Pussycat performed on Nov 5. The show promoted by Fisher Promotions also included local artists Colors Best Kept Black and the return of regional powerhouse Harpo. A huge venue at the Fire Company and a great crowd who reminisced and rocked to Faster Pussycat hits “Slip of the Tongue,” “Bathroom Wall” and “House of Pain.” A very memorable night and massive thank you to Travis Fisher for his kindness. His promotion company has brought many National artists to the area including: KIX, Slaughter, Night Ranger and Queensryche. Spoken-word artist Henry Rollins brought his recent tour to Harrisburg’s Whitaker Center on Nov 7. In addition to touring the former Black Flag singer has written many books, pursued acting and is a television and radio host. Rollins spoke briefly about the upcoming presidential election, his world travels and told many music stories regarding times spent with the Ramones, Lemmy Kilmister and David Bowie. FIDLAR returned to the East Coast on Nov 10 and blew away the Howard Theatre in Washington DC. The skate punk band just finished a tour with Swmrs and The Frights and also made an appearance on the Conan O’Brien show and played their single “West Coast.” FIDLAR are from Los Angeles and their name is an acronym for F*** It Dog, Life’s A Risk. Lastly, it was off to the Ardmore Music Hall outside of Philadelphia for the yearly reunion show of Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers on Nov 19. Always a great time and sold-out crowd to welcome back Conwell and his original band. Conwell is still an amazing musician and entertainer, a nice trip down memory lane to hear songs like, “Love’s On Fire,” “I’m Home” and “Walking On The Water.” NATIONAL NEWS! York-based alternative-rock band Live has reunited with former lead singer Ed Kowalczyk. The band split up in 2008, but continued to perform with other singers since 2012. Chad Taylor, Chad Gracey, Patrick Dahlheimer and Kowalczyk formed Live in 1985. All four graduated from William Penn High School in 1989. Live is best known for its 1994 album “Throwing Copper” and hits including “Lightning Crashes” and “Selling the Drama.” In 1996, the group was voted Artist of the Year by readers of Rolling Stone magazine. Bruce Springsteen recently broke down on his motorcycle in Freehold, New Jersey. A group of bikers from the Freehold American Legion were riding on Veterans

Day when the noticed a stranded motorcyclist. When they stopped to help, they were surprised to meet Springsteen. Unable to get the bike running, Springsteen hopped on the back of another and they headed to a local bar, where the gang hung out together until his ride showed up. Pop star Justin Bieber gave an impromptu free performance at a small Toronto bar. The Canadian-born Bieber visited the Fifth Pubhouse by himself on Nov 4, where he ordered a whiskey and coke at the bar while watching the Toronto Raptors basketball game. Bieber then suddenly sat down at the piano and performed several songs, including his hit “Sorry.” Bieber wasn’t paid for his performance, but his bar tab was covered. “Covering the tab was really the least we can do as he was being so gracious. His incredible live performance on the piano and down to earth interaction with our customers and staff were the highlights of the night.” Sadly, music lost four notable artists this past month ... Leonard Cohen died in his sleep after falling down in the middle of the night at his Los Angeles home on Nov 7. The singer, songwriter and poet behind “Hallelujah,” ‘‘Bird on a Wire” and “Suzanne” was 82 when he died. Cohen known for his deep voice that plunged to gravelly depths. He toured as recently as earlier this year and released a new album just last month. His “Hallelujah” became a cult hit when it was covered by musician Jeff Buckley in 1994. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leon Russell died at the age of 74 on Nov 13. Russell had heart bypass surgery in July and was recovering from that at the time of his death. He had been planning on resuming touring in January. He recorded hit songs himself like “Tight Rope” and “Lady Blue” and participated in “The Concert for Bangla Desh.” John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison played on

his first album, Leon Russell. He produced and played on recording sessions for Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike and Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones and many others. Elton John, Bruce Hornsby, Willie Nelson and others will serve as honorary pallbearers. Dap Kings soul singer Sharon Jones, passed away after battling pancreatic cancer at the age of 60 on Nov 18. Jones didn’t find stardom until middle age when she debuted her first album in 2002 at the age of 46. She then grew into a dynamic, show-stopping performer, idolizing the Godfather of Soul and would later be frequently tagged as “the female James Brown.” Jones toured as recently as this summer while undergoing chemotherapy, she stated ““You got to be brave. I want to use the time that I have. I don’t want to spend it all laid up, wishing I had done that gig.” Her torrid powerful performances were fueled by her audience and she forgot the pain. Dead Or Alive founder Pete Burns died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the age of 57. Burns founded Dead Or Alive in 1980. The band exploded into the mainstream with the ‘80s hit “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record).”

DAVE VILLANI & DATA MUSIC SERVICES: A 30-YEAR JOURNEY Dave Villani’s journey in the recording industry has been a lengthy and eventful one. His recording studio, Data Music Services, marks its 30th year in business in 2016. “I’m kind of blessed in a way,” said Dave. “I’ve been fortunate. Clients came in here and recorded, and they’re happy with what I did. We kept on growing.” Launched in 1986, Data Music Services went through several initial locations before settling in its current location, a former nightclub at 825 19th Street near downtown Altoona. Dave’s recording journey has seen the transition from an analog world into a digital one. According to Dave, “I started as a four-track reel-toreel, and then went eight-track reel-to-reel. By the end of the 1980s, the digital stuff started coming in. I sold Pro Audio in Philadelphia after I graduated from Temple (University).” The company he worked for at the time adopted a two-track digital editor, and his fascination with the digital realm had begun. It did not take long for Dave to become a fan of what has become the industry standard in digital audio recording, Pro Tools. He explained, “The forerunner to Pro Tools, which is what I use now, was Sound Tools, which was a two-track editor. When that came out in ’88, I bought one of the first systems there. As that formed into what became Pro Tools, it started as a four-track digital recorder, and it went up to and on and on to what it is now; it’s really unlimited.” In the 1990s, he became a Pro Tools dealer, and sells items such as Pro Audio microphones, consoles, speakers and more. “(Pro Tools) is really an industry standard,” according to Dave. “There are other DAW’s (digital audio workstations) and DAW work stations that a lot of people use, but by far, if you want a Pro Tools, you can go to Nashville, New York, Los Angeles and all that stuff and jump right in, because that is the standard.” Dave has kept up with every Pro Tools revision, and he always keeps his eyes and ears open for developing trends and technologies in the recording industry. “I’m always open to new techniques,” he said. “I constantly scour the internet for ‘how did they get their sound?’” While he embraces new recording techniques and technologies, Dave has never totally abandoned the analog world. He still has a two-inch, 24-track reel-to-reel tape machine at Data Music Services, and it still gets used. “A lot of clients want to track to that, because recording drums and bass and guitar to analog is kind of the holy grail,” said Dave. “There’s a saturation that tape gives you that’s really, really thick.” He added, “The holy grail is tracking to tape and then dumping it to Pro Tools.” Dave works with his clients to get the best sound for their project. A musician and arranger himself, Dave brings his expertise and perfect ear for music into each project to help clients achieve the best results. “I always work with clients the best I can,” he said. Currently, Dave’s recording clients include John Phelps and Jimi Ortag. He continues to work with several regular clients, and also records the Altoona Symphony Orchestra. As a performer, Dave currently sings, arranges and plays keys alongside singer Steve Oswalt in the Dave & Steve duo, and he often sits in on keys December, 2016

I have released. The thing about him is he is also a musician so his set of ears was invaluable for us. Professional, kind, experienced, it was a great day.”— Jay Vonada (Jay Vonada [Jazz] Quartet) “For anyone who knows the ins and outs of audio production, Dave is an amazing colleague and a local treasure. Before moving to the region, I worked with many of the top audio engineers in the industry while at CBS Radio in New York. Since then, I have learned a lot of new things from Dave. He never ceases to amaze me with his deep knowledge, and our students at Penn State Altoona are the beneficiaries of that vast knowledge…In short, his body of work is truly remarkable. We are fortunate to have Dave as a colleague at Penn State Altoona.”—Dr. Bob Trumpbour (Associate Professor of Communications, Penn State Altoona)
Dave pictured with the gear he started with & still uses at times with area blues-rocking favorites Felix & the Hurricanes. Dave also performed last month at a jazz concert at Penn State Altoona with the campus’ emerging artist in residence, vibraphonist Dan Shevock. Another aspect of Dave’s career is as an Instructor in Communications and Music at Penn State Altoona. Dave teaches courses in audio production, music theory, the history of jazz, the history of the Beatles, and songwriting. Besides continuing his endeavors in recording, performing and education, Dave is also entertaining the possibility of recording his own album of song compositions in the future. After 30 years of helping create recordings for others, he realizes that he has never issued his own CD yet. It is a goal on his bucket list. Following are a list of Testimonials from several satisfied clients and fellow musicians who have performed with Dave over the years:
“Dave is the absolute most knowledgeable and educated musician I’ve been exposed to to date. His ear is perfect…In his studio, Dave Villani is a self-proclaimed tuning freak, which I admire because it has trained me with my ears. The studio is as pro as it gets for any young or seasoned groups to track their songs. And Dave Villani is the engineer you need to guide you through your project…I highly recommend Data Music Services for your record.”— Felix Kos (Felix & the Hurricanes) “I was so lucky and blessed to be able to be part of a musical duo with Dave Villani, as many knew us as Dave and Paula (1989-2008). Dave has always been my mentor, and is like family to me, and a great friend. It was because of him, I was able to live out my dream as a singer and performer. It was an incredible musical journey, and I learned a lot from him. What an honor it was to have such a great partner in music.” — Paula Glunt (singer, Dave’s partner in Dave & Paula from 1989 to 2008)
“We have recorded several times with Dave, and we are extremely pleased with the results. He is a master of his craft for sure. Along with perfect “Dr. Dave Villani helped shape our sound and originals to what we pitch…he has fantastic mixing ability, and can get have today…Not just his engineering but also his B3 playing live and in his the most from any performer. —Ole 97 Johnny Cash/June Carter Tribute Band studio!” — Bob Watters (drummer, Felix & the Hurricanes) “Very easy to work with, great musicianship, he has a great ear for music. Whether in the studio or playing live, Dave has a way of bringing a fresh arrangement to the table. He is able to play solos when he’s not even heard the song before over whatever key you’re in. He’s just a real pro. He has a great ear in the studio, and has helped me record a few different songs with the Hurricanes and coaching me through my first experience in the studio. Live with Dave & Steve, he makes everything easy because he is so talented and versatile with his abilities.” —Steve Oswalt, half of Dave & Steve duo) “I have worked with Dave on several projects and when leading my own quartet two years ago it was a great experience. His recording of my album Expressions was the best experience I have had so far in the five albums Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price
With an emphatic blend of sudden howling winds, dark clouds spewing snow showers and plummeting temperatures on a late November Saturday afternoon, another winter season has made its arrival in central PA. And we have entered yet another holiday season. I wish all of our readers a pleasant and safe holiday season, including a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and peace for all, no matter what you are celebrating! Those aforementioned howling winds, clouds and snow showers provided the meteorological prelude to last month’s sixth annual Patched Together: A Day of Music for the Healing Patch. Taking place at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society, Patched Together raised funds and awareness for The Healing Patch, which provides counseling and mentoring services for grief-stricken youth. Twelve bands provided continuous music over two stages, commencing with The Sitch. Singer Ashley Thompson delivered stellar lead voice, flanked by guitarists Art Martino and Tim Michrina, bassist/sax player Ryan McCracken and drummer Kevin Siegel. The Sitch greeted the arriving audience with favorites from Pat Benatar, AC/DC, Journey, Guns N’Roses, Nena, a version of Halestorm’s “Here’s to Us” and more. Half of The Band OZ – singer/guitarist Don Osborn and bassist/singer Bill Hunter – then mixed up acoustic classic rock and blues numbers from Eric Clapton, Bo Diddley, the Animals, Delbert McClinton, Van Morrison and more. Continuing in the acoustic-geared vein, Strings Radio performed their unique variety of rock
and pop favorites. The trio of lead singer/guitarist Dan Myers, bassist/singer Chris Myers and percussionist Mike Crocetti broke out several pleasant surprises, including a version of Elle King’s “Ex’s and Oh’s,” Looking Glass’ 1972 hit “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl),” Led Zeppelin’s “Hey Hey What Can I Do” and more. With regularly-scheduled harmonica man “Harmonica Dave” Baird logging hospital time, the Backyard Rockers proceeded with guest harmonica player and singer Randy Karle this day, performing classics from Neil Young, the Beatles, Steve Earle, Marshall Tucker Band and more. An unexpected highlight during their set was when Mike Borstnar of the Stone Bridge Blues Band – who was setting up on the adjacent stage – chimed in with some tasty lead guitar at the start of Neil Young’s “Down By the River.” The Stone Bridge Blues Band – this day featuring Mike on guitar and vocals, bassist/singer Brian Moore, keyboardist Harold Hayford and drummer John Mundy – then celebrated electric blues with tasty renditions of classics from Albert King, Delbert McClinton, B.B. King and more. Making their first Patched Together appearance, Time with Donny Burns cranked up the rock, mixing classics spanning the 1960s to 1990s. Namesake/singer Donny Burns showed fire and intensity as he led the group – guitarists Donny Burns Jr. and Don Gordon, bassist Crissee Gordon and drummer Mike Hohnka – through favorites from the Foo Fighters, the Who, Stone Temple Pilots, Allman Brothers, Third Eye Blind, a scorching edition of the Black Crowes’ “Remedy” and more. Also making their Patched Together debut, The Rattlers followed with their blend of vintage rock’n’roll. Lead singer/guitarist Gene Myers Sr., guitarist/singer Matt Myers, keyboardist/singer Theresa Wilson, bassist/singer Jae Smith and drummer Tom Urbain did nice work on hits from Martha & the Vandellas, Van Morrison, Spencer Davis Group, Sam Cooke, Bruce Springsteen and more. This Albatross then

fired up the dance floor with their uptempo set. Backed by punchy backdrops generated by guitarist/singer Phil “Philly Grooves” Wagner, bassist Mike Stanley, guitarist/keyboardist Paul Johnson and drummer Shawn Gioiosa; singer Autumn Shiffler delivered vocal range, pep and power on female-fronted favorites from Stevie Nicks, Blondie and Joan Jett, as well as scorching renditions of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” and Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose.” R2B2 took the party in a funky direction, as singer/guitarist Rick Wertz, guitarist/singer Ric Criste, bassist/singer Fritz Wyland, keyboardist/singer Mary Villani and drummer/singer Beau Saller stirred up the dance floor with tunes from KC & the Sunshine Band, Commo-

dores, Delbert McClinton, Prince and more. Highlights of their set included Mary singing spunky lead on No Doubt’s “Hella Good,” and Rick tapping out additional beats on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and the Fritz-fronted take on War’s “Low Rider.” Next up was Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, who generated a groove fest. After opening with their take on Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon,” namesake Chris on vocals and guitar, lead guitarist Tucker Landis, bassist Bill Smith, keyboardist/trumpet player Nate Beatty and drummer Randy Servello did a number of tunes off their new Trinkets and Time Travelers CD such as “Everybody Else,” “Never Again,” “Armchair Preachers” and more. This group again demonstrated tasteful, timely musicianship, clever melodies and lyrics, and danceable
Stephanie & Bob of The Chrome Hearts grooves. The Chrome Hearts then mixed up rock’n’roll, country favorites and original songs during their set. Singer Stephanie Onkst, singer/guitarist Bob Onkst, bassist Brian Baum, lead guitarist Chad Buterbaugh and drummer Doug Fetter triggered dance floor action with tunes from Jeannie C. Riley, Eagles, Luke Bryan, Gretchen Wilson, CCR and more, and did original songs such as “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” and “Drunkensville, USA.” Before the day’s final group, Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, took the stage, Patched Together chairman Kent Tonkin introduced special guest singer/ songwriter Alyssa Smith to play one of her original songs. From there, Jim and the Sun King Warriors – guitarists Kevin McDonald and Dan Murphy, Kent on bass, Bryan Fazio and Harry Pepper on percussion, and guest drummer Randy Servello – triggered jubilant dance floor action with their mixture of new original songs and tunes from the group’s debut CD. Patched Together 2016 was again well attended and smoothly executed, and was a highly successful event. Thanks to all who supported it! Patched Together was one of several benefit shows I saw in recent weeks. A number of harder-rocking area bands joined forces to raise funds and food for the Altoona Food Bank during the Trick-or-Feed food drive benefit at McGarvey’s on Halloween weekend. Seven bands performed on two stages, starting with Klockwick. This was my first time seeing this group since the addition
Fred Moyse & David Sickman of the Hackensaw Boys 20
James Garcia of Adesta of guitarist Mike Houck, who has joined singer/bassist Josh Brubaker, lead guitarist Dave Charlton and drummer George Phillips. Bolstered by an agitated political message, Klockwick pounded out a mix of jagged-edged songs from their Devolution of Tyranny CD plus newer originals. Williamsport’s 44Mag then thrashed out their brand of power metal, mixing new and older original numbers. Lead snarler Jared Mondell, guitarist Jason Miller, drummer Jesse Roedts and new bassist Chris Bartley delivered aggressive assaults such as “Heroes of the New Aeon,” “Hands of Misery,” “Violent Confrontation,” “Devil’s Harvest” and more. It Is Written followed up with their fierce power-metal attack. Singer/guitarist Ken Hawkins, bassist Colin McAtee and drummer Darl Johnstonbaugh levied stormy original numbers such as “Human Stain,” “Sworn Judgment” and more. Next was my first look at Poughkeepsie, New York-based foursome Adesta. Comprised of singer Brandon Devens, guitarist Donnie Avramis, bassist Adam Sitarz and drummer James Garcia, Adesta performed a progressive-leaning style of modern rock/metal with similarities to Tool and Chevelle. The group mixed original songs from their What We Have Become EP with newer songs from their forthcoming second recording. Syracuse, New York-based foursome One Step From Falling continued with their self-described brand of “heady metal,” combining experimental melodies with heavy metallic grooves. Lead singer/drummer Steve Reith, guitarists Pete Krell and Bob Bardou, and bassist Josh Skellett mixed numbers from their latest EP, The Wayside, with newer originals and a version of Tool’s “Sober.” Next, Johnstown’s Darkness On The Radio scathed with all-out metal ferocity; lead snarler/guitarist Jason Straw, guitarist Jay Snyder, bassist Greg Hatch and drummer Jason Kirchner fired off a number of new orig-

inal assaults from their forthcoming recording. And host band Hate Grenade slammed the lid on the night, detonating their set of explosive street-savvy metal. Former member Rich Johnson returned to the fold to cover bass duties this night, assisting frontman Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera and drummer Mike Powers on tunes from their Pull the Pin CD plus some newer numbers. The Trick-or-Feed benefit raised $300 plus numerous non-perishable food items. As one of the area’s most popular dance deejays, Jeff Skidmore – known as DJ Skiddy – has been involved in benefits and other events to help out the central PA community. Five years ago, Jeff went on dialysis and has been awaiting a kidney transplant, and will undergo that surgery later this month. A four-band benefit show to raise funds toward his medical expenses took place last month at Altoona’s Eldolyn Terrace. Other commitments prevented me from seeing the first performers of the afternoon, Bone Jacked, but I arrived to a surprise for the second band of the day. When a last-minute emergency sidelined part of This Albatross, the audience was instead treated to the “unofficial” debut performance of Agent Smith, a new project that unites three members of This Albatross with longtime area frontman Steve Oswalt. Steve, guitarist Phil Wagner, bassist Mike Stanley and drummer Shawn Gioiosa fired off the rock on the three songs I witnessed: Journey’s “Anyway You Want It,” The Cult’s “Fire Wom-

an” and Iron Maiden’s “Two Minutes to Midnight.” At this point, concert beneficiary Jeff addressed the audience about the history of his kidney situation, and welcomed another kidney recipient, Tracy, who discussed the importance of organ donation. Next up was the debut of Pops Rock, a new collaboration featuring several longtime musicians. Singer/harmonica player Randy Karle, singer/ bassist Dave Hopkins, singer/guitarist Mo Yon, guitarist Craig Shaffer and drummer Bill Hocherl mixed classic rock favorites from the 1960s through 1980s. Pops Rock exuded a fun vibe as they did numbers from Cream, Robert Johnson, Pink Floyd, Animals, Bob Dylan and more. Ending the benefit with a country flavor was 100 Proof. Singer RJ, guitarists Todd Belardi and Denny Yon, bassist Moose and drummer Dave Russell sounded strong with their mix of modern country favorites from Randy Houser, David Lee Murphy, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Jason Aldean and more. This benefit was a success; hats off to Randy Karle and Terry Wilt for organizing it, as well as everyone who attended. Also last month, the Strayer Benefit took place at the Unter Uns Musical and Entertainment Society in Altoona, raising funds for Megan Strayer and son Colin after the recent tragic passing of their husband and father, Ivan. Six bands donated their talents this day, starting with Root and the Fifths. Awakening the crowd with their set-opening, blistering read of the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” singer/ guitarist Jae Smith, guitarist/singer Ryan Weaver, bassist/

The Professor continued singer Pat Lang and drummer/singer Tyke Dodson performed a selection of ‘90s-intensive classics from Goo Goo Dolls, Soul Asylum, Better Than Ezra, Collective Soul, Smash Mouth and more. With Randy Karle filling in on harmonica, the Backyard Rockers next performed acoustic favorites from The Band, Steve Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show, Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. A hot-wired edition of Down to the Wire then took the stage; this configuration featured guests Jamie Shumac on vocals and Rich Dasch on acoustic guitar, joining bassist Bob Seiler, guitarist Kirk Robison and drummer Rick Guyer. Down to the Wire performed a variety of classic rock and pop hits from Greg Kihn Band, Bryan Adams, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, Van Morrison, Neil Young and more, with guest Randy Karle jumping in to contribute harmonica on several songs. Jampact continued the music with their blend of modern and classic rock favorites. Singer/guitarist Ryan Clark, bassist/keyboardist Steve Treado, singer/drummer Jamie Shumac and singer Lisa Bock sounded strong on numbers from the Black Keys, Halestorm, Styx and more. Work obligations prompted my departure before the final two bands, D.D. & the Pub Crawlers and Hot Damn, closed out the benefit. I attended a different kind of show in late October, doing the road trip to a remote “batcave” location near Muncy for the Pennsylvania Pipeline Music-TV Music Fest, a day of live music and television taping for Jeff Pittinger’s Pennsylvania Pipeline Music-TV program, which airs on WYLN-TV in Hazleton and on YouTube. I arrived just before the cameras started rolling on Lost Saints’ performance. Currently the acoustic duo of Keith Randall and John Freas, Lost Saints performed several dark-toned original songs, including “Blister,” “Silent Works,” “Escape” and “It’s Over.” Next was another Williamsport-based group, Ephymera, who performed powerful renditions of numbers from Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Tool’s “The Pot” and Dio/Killswitch Engage’s “Holy Diver.” Slamming the lid on this taping and Music Fest was 44Mag, who demonstrated their thrashing brand of power metal. They stormed through original assaults such as “50 Miles,” “Heroes of the New Aeon,” “Hands of Misery” and a new tune, “Severed Ties.” These performances and episodes of Pennsylvania Pipeline Music TV air on Thursday and Sunday evenings on WYLN-TV; you can also view them on WYLN’s website, or do like I did and binge-watch episodes on YouTube! I spent a lot of time during recent weeks at McGarvey’s
in Altoona, as a multitude of diverse musical performances kept me coming back. As has been Halloween season tradition at this venue the past few years, former Misfits frontman Michale Graves returned to McGarvey’s in late October, headlining a multi-band bill that also featured X’s For Eyes, The Flannels and PinkBelly. I arrived just before Michale Graves and his band took the stage; Michale showcased many of his solo career original songs, and celebrated a few select Misfits favorites before a large crowd. Michale performed solo numbers such as “Bedlam,” “Speak of the Devil,” “Ophelia,” “Lost Skeleton” and “When Worlds Collide,” and celebrated his Misfits stint with “American Psycho” and the night-closing rendition of the popular “Saturday Night.” During Halloween weekend, McGarvey’s hosted the “Zombie Prom,” featuring the triple-bill of Samara, Seraphine and Small Town Horror Show. I arrived during the last song of Samara’s set, but got to witness this group’s audiovisual spectacle, as their intense brand of power metal worked in tandem with coordinated video footage and digital sampling. Featuring Wrath of Typhon frontman Jason Robison plus former members of Ninetail, York’s Seraphine launched a captivating sound merging power metal and classical elements. Rachel Robison’s siren-like, operatic vocals and Jason’s feral howl provided an interesting contrast throughout the set, working off the tense and ethereal backdrops generated by guitarists Don Belch and Brian Faychak, keyboardist Greg Weber, bassist Josh Griffin and drummer Chris Appenzeller. And Small Town Horror Show fired off their frantic brand of “zombie groove metal,” doing numbers off their The Dead Didn’t Die CD plus grinding takes on Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” and Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.” Decked in his zombie ringmaster finest for Halloween, singer Todd “Kiwi” McKeone varied between subdued croons and soaring, go-for-broke howls, with guitarist Chris Peters, bassist Eric Shumac and drummer Joe Richards providing the driving backdrops. The musical psycho circus that is the Goddamn Gallows returned to McGarvey’s last month, headlining a five-band bill. Opening the night were performances by X’s For Eyes, Pittsburgh’s Six Speed Kill and Richmond, Virginia’s Creep-A-Zoids. I arrived midway through the set by Winchester, Virginia’s Gallows Bound, who performed their style of punk-infused traditional music. I didn’t catch any song titles, but liked this group’s blend of melodies, vocal harmonies, skilled musicianship with a touch of punk-edged bite. Then Detroit’s Goddamn Gallows finished the night with total insanity, as they unleashed their edition of Americana punk-metal gypsy music run amok. Singer/guitarist Mikey Classic brought the gruff growls, fire and brimstone, while accordion and washboard player TV’s Avery brought the three-ring circus, climbing over barriers into the crowd, trying to tie up the crowd with a microphone cord, and other unpredictable antics – backed by Fishgutzzz on upright bass, Baby Genius on drums and Jayke Orvis on mandolin. The Gallows mixed favorites and new tunes; among their highlights were crowd-pleasers such as “Y’all M-F’ers Need Jesus,” “Load Your Guns” and “City of Hell A” (preceded by an unexpected Slayer “Reign in Blood” lead-in). The group welcomed Gallows Bound’s Jordan Joyes to play guitar on a couple of songs, and welcomed all of Gallows Bound up to join them toward show’s end. The Hackensaw Boys paid their first visit to McGarvey’s last month, headlining a triple-bill that also included Nobody’s Heroes and The Flannels. The Flannels opened the night impressively with their brand of melody-geared punk rock original songs, before Nobody’s Heroes played a robust set of their punk-driven Americana sounds, including many songs from their latest CD, One Foot on the Gas, the Other in the Grave. World-traveled and renowned in roots music, Virginia’s Hackensaw Boys en-
tertained the large McGarvey’s audience with their blend of roots, folk and country music with a touch of rock attitude and swagger. The group did songs from throughout their career, including such numbers as “Ol Nick,” “Kiss You Down There,” “Smilin’ Must Mean Something” and more. Their vocals and instrumental talents shined, and their presentation was enthusiastic yet cordial. As a percussionist myself, my attention was primarily focused on Brian Gorby and his percussion contraption, a charizmo, which is assembled from discarded items such as cans, bottles, hubcaps and more, and tapped on with drum sticks, brushes and more. The Hackensaw Boys were a hit with the McGarvey’s crowd; hopefully a return visit will be in the works. Western PA’s Shannon and the Merger made their first visit to the McGarvey’s stage last month. From Washington County, this group was good, blending a wide variety of rock, pop, funk, soul and original songs. Namesake Shannon Watson showed an excellent voice all night long, and Stanley Mikolajek displayed frequently incredible harmonica skills; both backed by guitarist/singer Bob Giacometti, bassist Ryan Luko and drummer Murray Petty. Shannon and the Merger mixed their song selection up, from Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” to Ella King’s “Ex’s and Oh’s,” from Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee” to Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” from “Sweet Home Chicago” to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,’” original songs off their album Long Way Down and more. Although not a huge crowd in attendance, the McGarvey’s audience appreciated the group’s efforts. Lil’ Rev returned to Altoona last month to perform at Penn State Altoona’s Slep Student Center. This turned into a special, personal show, as Lil’ Rev – Marc Revenson – shared his music and world in front of a small, appreciative audience. Lil’ Rev – who has authored several ukulele instruction books in the Hal Leonard series – performed a selection of traditional blues, folk, instrumentals and other original compositions over his two sets, many from his new CD Claw and Hammer. He played selections on an assortment of instruments, including several different ukuleles, a banjolele (a ukulele shaped and toned like a banjo), acoustic guitar, harmonica and resophonic mountain dulcimer. He shared music trivia facts and history along the way. But most importantly, he shared his own story of healing during the past two years, as his wife was diagnosed with and passed away from lung cancer. He shared how music and his friends in the Milwaukee music community helped him to turn the corner and move forward from the tragedy. He performed several new songs that spawned from that experience, He also tapped into the song arsenals of Memphis Slim, Blind Willie McTell, as well as spirituals and an original song inspired by a dream about John Lee Hooker. Live Andean music filled Penn State Altoona’s Slep Center last month, courtesy of Rockville, Maryland-based group the Mystic Warriors. Spearheaded by Andres and Marco Mallea, the Mystic Warriors performed Andean

just a few years ago. He was encouraged to start playing his songs out in public, and quickly caught his “second wind” and started traveling across the continent, playing music conferences and festivals in Canada and the U.S. Among his stops was the 2011 Millennium Music Conference, where I first met him. We became quick friends, and I enjoyed his colorful and often humorous style of songwriting. His song “Won’t You Help Me Dr. Phil” became a fast favorite during the conference, and folks requested it when Lloyd performed during the Trade Show on the PA Musician stage, as well as at his own showcase performance at Cornerstone Coffeehouse, and even during the post-conference late-night jam session in the hotel lobby. He returned for the 2012 Millennium Music Conference. Lloyd and I stayed in touch after the conference, and he would email me once in a while to let me know what he

Lil” Rev The Professor continued and Peruvian sounds with a diverse array of instruments, including various panflutes, charango, guitar and more. I got to see the last few songs of their performance, including “The Shadow of the Sun.” One interesting highlight was from a student sitting in front of me. From Peru, she was sending a live smartphone feed of the performance back to her mother in Peru, who was then dancing on the other end of the phone! The performance was presented by Penn State Altoona’s Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity. Phil McCaulley has become established in central PA over the years as a solo performer, and most notably for his popular former stint as an Elvis Presley impersonator. But until now, Phil had never fronted his own full band. That changed last month with the debut of The McCaulley Project at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg. Phil is front and center, singing and playing guitar; assisted by Adam DiFlaviano on keys, Kris Civils on bass and Bill Hocherl on drums. The McCaulley Project mixed classics from Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bon Jovi, Bob Seger, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more. They broke out jamming takes on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s epic “Free Bird,” Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” and did a version of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” This debut was well-received; the McCaulley Project returns to the Gran Sasso Dec. 1. Other performances I saw recently included Flight 19 at Altoona’s 4D’s Lounge, marking the final performance of local guitar legend John McKelvey with the group’s electric edition; he will continue on with the acoustic edition of Flight 19…I also saw recent performances by Hops & Vines, Paul Johnson and Young Lungs at Altoona’s Railroad City Brewing Company…One Adam 12 during a recent performance at McGarvey’s…and Felix & the Hurricanes during their weekly Sunday appearance at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern…And I witnessed and participated in the final jam session at Pellegrine’s in Altoona, which closed its doors in late October. Pellegrine’s was one of the first venues where I started watching live music in the 1980s, and I enjoyed many great bands and ate many original recipe Buffalo wings there over the years. Pelly’s will be missed. On a sad note, a musical friend I met several years ago during the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg – Canadian singer/songwriter Lloyd Mac Hardy – passed away unexpectedly just before Thanksgiving at age 78. From Nova Scotia, Lloyd was a late bloomer. Although he had played guitar and written songs for a few decades, he was a closet musician who did not perform publicly until December, 2016

(VARIOUS ARTISTS) – HAPPY VALLEY HOLIDAYS (Demon Drive Studio) While vacationing in St. Lucia in July, 2014, State College-based musician and producer Gregory Mudzinski became inspired. A native basket maker shared a story with Mudzinski of rebounding from tragedy after a freak storm on Christmas Eve, 2013, washed away roads and homes; the native proclaimed it as the best Christmas ever because people came together and helped each other. Moved by the story, Mudzinski came up with the idea of Happy Valley Holidays, a Christmas season album featuring Centre County-based bands and artists, with proceeds helping out humanitarian organization Direct Relief, which assists people affected by poverty or disasters worldwide. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Mudzinski at his Demon Drive Studio in Boalsburg, Happy Valley Holidaysfeatures a wide variety of holiday-themed sounds over 16 tracks. Mudzinski himself appears on four of the tracks; his duet with Alicia Starr on their original composition “Christmastime in Mexico,” The Clover’s punk-driven disc-ending rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” featuring pianist Matthew Wyzykowski, and Lady’s two alternative-rocking takes on “What Child Is This?” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” with Duste Decay’s voice making a cameo appearance on the latter. Other performers offering their own Christmas-themed original songs include August Room with their uplifting “Happy Christmas,” The Whatleys’ punk-rocking rant against holiday season commercialism, “No More Holidays!” and Jason McIntyre’s folksy lament “Punxy,” which he performs with Junior Tutwiler, Kate Anderson Twoey, Dan Collins and John “J.K.” Kennedy. Twoey and Pure Cane Sugar offer beautiful vocal harmonies on “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” and choral voices unite on the State College Presbyterian Church FISH’s rendition of “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Another vocal highlight is 2014 State College Idol contest winner Rachel Moon’s bold a cappella treatment of “Ave Maria.” OverheaD contributes two fresh arrangements of traditional holiday favorites; their B-52s-flavored take on “We Three Kings” and a bluesy spin on “Deck the Halls.” The album also features The Strayers’ accordion-underscored version of “O Holy Night,” Joseph Tombasco’s disc-opening piano prelude rendition of “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” Kevin Patterson & Chris Fuller’s acoustic interpretation of “Silent Night,” and Jon Vickers-Jones’ spoken word recitation of “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Together, this diverse collection flows nicely, and Mudzinski’s recording gives the set a crisp consistency. Happy Valley Holidays unites a community of Centre region musicians toward a noteworthy 24
DON HUGHES – IT’S CHRISTMAS (no label) Altoona native Don Hughes was introduced to the piano as a child, and honed his skills as a contestant, winner and eventual judge in Dennie Huber’s annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show. After stints in the band Generation Gap and as studio keyboard man with Fat Vinny & the Wiseguys, life and career relocated Hughes to the Pittsburgh area. After issuing a self-titled instrumental debut CD in 2007, Hughes has released his second instrumental effort, the holiday season album It’s Christmas. Influenced by the classical-meets-progressive-rock stylings of Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Hughes renders a similar approach over the disc’s 11 tracks, providing innovative arrangements on a variety of traditional holiday favorites. Rock-driven arrangements propel the disc-opening rendition of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” as well as “We Three Kings,” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” and the medley of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas/Carol of the Bells/Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Don’s classical leanings prevail on versions of “Veni Veni (O Come, O Come Emmanuel),” “Deck the Halls,” “Angels We Have Heard on High” and the merger “O Christmas Tree/O Come All Ye Faithful.” Acoustic guitar provides guidance on treatments of “Away in a Manger,” “Silent Night” and the disc-ending “Joy to the World.” Hughes displays mastery as both a performer and arranger. His keyboard never stays in one place for long, as he varies between full orchestral flourishes and stripped-down flavors, sometimes emulating woodwind and string tones with his keys. His arrangements provide variety and dynamic wax and wane on each number, keeping the disc sounding fresh from start to end. It’s Christmas is invigorating and uplifting, as Don Hughes’ variety of yuletide vibes and flavors makes this a fitting soundtrack for trimming the Christmas tree
or playing during holiday gatherings. (The CD can be purchased through Don’s website, www.donhughesmusic.com.)
THE ETHAN JANO BAND – THE ETHAN JANO BAND (no label) Influenced at an early age by his father’s playlist of classic rock, folk and country, Somerset’s Ethan Jano began penning his own songs in his late teens, and began performing as a solo folk artist. Soon his cousins Bryce and Damian Jano started joining Ethan on drums and bass respectively, and The Ethan Jano Band was formed. The group’s self-titled CD introduces a sound rooted in classic rock, country, folk and blues. Ethan displays a knack for alluring melodies, and delivers those melodies with a hearty voice, cadence and clarity over the disc’s 11 tracks. As a songwriter, Ethan’s words ponder his own life, purpose and mission. He expresses weariness over the nine-to-five daily grind on the uptempo country-geared disc-opening stomp “Long Road,” and he contemplates his routine and purpose on the rollicking “Same Old Melody.” The bluegrass-tinged “Irony” expresses confusion over life’s direction, while “Big Change” considers moments of self-realization and enlightenment. Ethan and his band offer a darker Neil Young tone on the sullen “Broken Pieces.” He is also capable of tender ballads, evidenced by the acoustic romantic odes “I Love You,” “Love Song” and “Don’t You Cry.” Ethan is front and center, his strong voice shining clear and prominent in the mix. His performances sound heartfelt, emotion-packed and sincere. The melodies are captivating, and the set is cohesive from start to end. Produced by Ethan, the mix sounds crisp and raw, letting his voice and his band’s performances do the talking without extra gloss, bells or whistles. The Ethan Jano Band provides a distinctive, signature style and sound on this album, and clearly reveals Ethan’s musical personality and world. (The CD can be obtained through the website www.theethanjanoband.com.)

NOBODY’S HEROES – ONE FOOT ON THE GAS, THE OTHER IN THE GRAVE (no label) First formed five years ago by singer/guitarist Grant Matthews and singer/banjo player Brian Dumm, Nobody’s Heroes introduced their blend of punk and Americana flavors two years ago with an initial five-song EP, and flesh out their sound more on their latest CD, One Foot on the Gas, The Other in the Grave. Adding the driving drumbeats of Abe Weber and additional guitar from Lance T. Burgess, Nobody’s Heroes steps up the tempo and excitement over this disc’s dozen tracks. Restlessness, love woes and booze are prominent lyrical themes here; bluegrass and Celtic punk flavors merge to drive the rambunctious disc-opener “Scratch My Name on the World” and its theme of living life with reckless abandon. Likewise, the driving punk-country rant “Freedom & Fear” restlessly yearns to escape and skip town. Meanwhile, “State Train” loathes prison time, and “Blood on the Banjo” tries to leave the past behind. Nobody’s Heroes taps an early Buddy Holly roots-rock flavor with “Come Home,” as well as a roots-country vibe with “Diane Lonely.” And alcohol themes prevail on the group’s update of “Moonshine” from their initial EP and their battle with “The Bottle.” The performances are vibrant and go-for-broke; both Matthews and Dumm offer rugged, edgy voices up front, backed by gang shout choruses, agitated banjo and guitars, plus Weber’s drum beats and Chris Lawson’s upright bass thumps. The melodies and words connect, and the group’s arrangements and variety keep the disc sounding fresh from start to end. Recorded and engineered by Larry Luther at Mr. Small’s Studio in Pittsburgh, this disc sounds brisk, balanced, edgy and full with all components of the group’s sound coming through clearly. Nobody’s Heroes steps on the accelerator on One Foot on the Gas, the Other in the Grave, and delivers a rowdy, rootsy, rewarding joyride. (The CD can be obtained through CDBaby.com.)
SMALL TOWN HORROR SHOW – THE DEAD DIDN’T DIE (no label) From Altoona, Small Town Horror Show started several years ago as a collaboration between former Dragon Fire guitarist Chris Peters and bassist Eric Shumac, plus former Choking Faith drummer Joe Richards. The collaboration expanded into its current five-member roster last year with the addition of keyboardist Mike Hennaman and singer Todd McKeone. Their 10-track debut album, The Dead Didn’t Die, introduces Small Town Horror Show’s self-proclaimed brand of ‘zombie groove metal.’ Powerful, often frantic rhythms by Richards and Shumac, chunky riffs from Peters, and tense and timely key fills from Hennaman all set the backdrops for McKeone’s dynamic vocals, which vary between subdued croons and high-soaring howls in a style not far removed from peak-era Billy Idol. The songs strike hard and quickly, with lyrics that ride the border between horror film and real world realities. McKeone sounds ready to go off the deep end while he counters demons on the frantic “Fearless,” and he convincingly sells the notion of the insane state of our current world on the frantic “Crazy.” “Gather Your Guns” warns of the impending zombie apocalypse, while the swift “Storm of the Century” warns of another kind of apocalypse. The group shows a more thunderous presence on the forboding “Bow to Your Enemy,” and generates an aggressive shuffle with the introspective “Let It Go.” The disc’s pacing is swift and tight, keeping the action constant from start to end. The group’s execution is sharp and on target, bringing their metal full force, with Hennaman’s timely keyboard accents adding tension and depth. Recorded at EQuinox Music and Arts in Dallastown and engineered by Don Belch and Scott Gross, the disc sounds clean, sharp and full. Small Town Horror Show delivers a strong debut on The Dead Didn’t Die, introducing a distinctive style and angle for their ‘zombie groove metal,’ and setting the foundation for future expansion and experimentation. A good listen. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www. smalltownhorrorshow.com.)
THE ARTS – ETHNICITY (no label) The Greensburg-based studio duo of Chris Vottero and Joel Sanders – known as The Arts – have freely indulged their creativity and sense of musical adventurism on their recordings to date. They have raised the bar on that creativity with their latest CD, Ethnicity. A concept album, Ethnicity finds Vottero (playing drums, bass and keys) and Sanders (playing guitars and mandolin) creating six instrumental compositions, each based on a different ethnic musical flavor from different parts of the globe, infused into their own progressive-geared musical style. The pair composed each track to portray a musical story, and also created corresponding CD sleeve artwork for each piece. The compositions are ornately crafted and arranged, and reveal The Arts’ musical diversity and – December, 2016

per their monicker – artistry. Opening the disc, “Arabian Souls” taps a Middle-Eastern flavor and a musical narrative based on Arabian mythology and a natural phenomena known as the ‘singing sand dunes,’ where shifting sands create a pitch of a G note. “Secret Garden” is milder in tone and based on traditional Japanese music, with a surging midsection representing a fantasy samurai battle sequence. Rooted in a Brazilian samba beat, “Bertholettia Excelsa” implements elements of rock, blues, jazz and Latin horns. The expansive “Medieval Memoir” follows a classical format that shifts through movements with a variety of intensities and slants. “Unmasked Serenata” is based on several European ethnic musical styles, highlighted by a circus-like midsection. And composed around an African rhythm, “Tanzanian Sunrise (Dawn of Man)” maneuvers through an ever-changing tapestry of rhythmic progressions. Ethnicity is interesting from start to end, as both Vottero and Sanders constantly vary their soundscapes and take the listener through unpredictable twists and turns. They successfully emulate the ethnic flavors of each piece, with their own distinctive instrumental style weaving a thread through the disc’s entirety to tie it all together. Recorded, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Vottero and Sanders, Ethnicity sounds clean, full, balanced, consistent and focused. Their ambitious undertaking is a successful one, as The Arts’ Ethnicity takes listeners’ ears and minds on a colorful international journey. This is a masterfully-executed set well worth checking out. (To obtain a copy, email cvottero@comcast.net.)
