Paul Sorrels, Glen Charron, Ian Gordon and Shea Saman complete the band’s line up. Jersey based Night Birds visited American Bar and Grill in Lancaster on January 2nd. A great night of punk rock which included: Deletions, Shitty Friends and killer band Brom Bones! I was shocked to realize I’ve never heard of Brom Bones from Lancaster. With a few brief times of hiatus, Brom Bones have always seem to return and their career spans across four decades. Frontman Jason Berlet was fantastic and wailed, while the entire band delivered solid melodic punk. Brom Bones will play ABAG again on March 12 with the highly anticipated return of The Lebowskis. Last month also included a trip south to the Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD for Wild Child: Dave Brock’s Doors Experience. The Los Angeles based act has over 20 solid years of world tour experience and are considered the most realistic tribute to The Doors. Wild Child tries to mirror the depth, energy and emotion of The Doors concerts as they were live back in the late 1960’s. The music is painstakingly reproduced and combined with the voice, look and essence of Jim Morrison live on stage. A must for fans of The Doors. NATIONAL NEWS: David Bowie, the legendary chameleon of rock ‘n’ roll, died January 10th of cancer. Bowie turned 69 two days earlier, the same day as he released a new album called “Blackstarâ€?. Bowie, whose hits included “Fame,â€? ‘‘Heroesâ€? and “Let’s Dance,â€? died “peacefullyâ€? and was surrounded by family. The singer had fought cancer for 18 months. Bowie NHSW D ORZ SURĂ€OH LQ recent years after reportedly suffering a heart attack in the 2000s. The singer, who was born David Jones in London, came of age in the glam rock era of the early 1970s. He had a striking androgynous look in his early days and was known for changing his appearance and sounds. Bowie was inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, but he didn’t attend the ceremony. Pearl Jam has a North American headline tour lined up for this Spring. Eddie Vedder & Co. marked their 25th year of performing live in October. One week before Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan reunite as Guns N’ Roses’ classic lineup at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in April, the band will play two nights in Las Vegas. 7KLV PDUNV WKH Ă€UVW WLPH VLQFH WKDW WKH\ KDYH SHUIRUPHG RQ VWDJH WRJHWKHU Guns N’ Roses perform at the new Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena April 8th-9th. “Inside sourcesâ€? also claim the band will do a stadium tour this Summer. Slash and McKagan are rehearsing in Los Angeles with Frank Ferrer, who has drummed for the Rose-led GNR since 2006. Axl Rose has not been participating in the rehearsals, while band members refamiliarize themselves with the material. No word whether original members Steven Adler or Izzy Stradlin will participate. Glenn Frey, who co-founded The Eagles and with Don Henley became one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as “Hotel Californiaâ€? and “Life in the Fast Lane,â€? died on January 18th. Frey, who was 67, died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said on its website. The total of $199.4 million she sold in North America now stands as the biggest tour to ever hit the continent as she crushed the previous record of $162 million set by The Rolling Stones in 2005. One Direction’s $210.2 million gross was second to Swift globally but with 2,364,390 tickets sold, no one played in front of more fans. AC/DC returned to touring minus Malcolm Young and did a massive $180 million in global ticket sales for the biggest tour in its history. BeyoncĂŠ is returning to the Super Bowl halftime show. The 34-year-old singer will perform at the February 7th show at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Last month, Coldplay announced they would perform at the halftime show. BeyoncĂŠ and Coldplay recently collaborated on the band’s new album, “A Head Full of Dreamsâ€?. BeyoncĂŠ headlined the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, where she was joined by her Destiny Child’s bandmates. Katy Perry, who performed at last year’s Super Bowl, had the most-watched halftime show in history with 118 million viewers. Cole’s greatest success came with her 1991 album, “Unforgettable ... “Instrumentally, Tote’s EP balances her love for rocker chicks Stevie Nicks and Grace Potter with stand-and-sing divas Adele and Amy Winehouse. More simply put: it’s big voice, old soul. The bridge of her single “Superman” shows major pop-rock chops, and “Jane” breaks for a bounding saxophone solo.” — Bobby Olivier, NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

ACROSS THE DESK continued... Lewton and Save the City. As usual I’m running late. I really wanted to do a nice interview with John Harris, Director of the Millennium Music Conference. Over the last 20 years I have watched him labor and work at pulling this conference off, year after year. There are always people griping and groaning but I tell you, “The Man knows good music and he has always strived to give the Harrisburg area a treat for their ears by bringing us a plethora of talented musicians. Yes, there are a few that are just developing but the Music Confeerence is designed for those just starting out as well. Making connections and learning the “Music Business is what the daytime conference is all about. Are you going to be “discovered and become a big star and drive a big car, probably not. But you will learn and you will make connections that will last a life time in your musical career. I called Mr. Harris and asked him to put down some of his thoughts about the conference and the industry and general. Following is what he sent me, and it is very good. Thanks John!
Millennium Music Conference & Showcase Celebrating 20 Years 1997 - 2016 Harrisburg, PA It’s been 20 Years from humble beginnings in 1997 at the Best Western Conference Center & Courtyard Nightclub (old Villa Leo) off 83 South in New Cumberland to the Hilton Towers & Crown Plaza in downtown Harrisburg over to the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill and this is our 3rd year at the Best Western Premier, Central Hotel & Conference Center and the showcase venues have changed more that the host hotel. From 90 acts in 11 venues in 1997 to almost 300 acts at 30 venues in 2016 with Gullifty’s Underground (or Zee’s Eatery in 1997) being the only venue in all 20 years. In 1997 mostly local bands participated and some are still around: Fuel, The Jellybricks, The Badlees, Hexbelt, Hybrid Ice, Martini Bros., Mike Banks, Dj Geoffro, Joey Welz, Allmighty Senators, Case 150, Carbon Leaf and Fred Pellegrini.

In 1996 when we started up the event the idea was to provide a forum for original acts and artists to meet, network and learn about how to advance their careers and then showcase their original music at night. The event has not changed that goal. )RU WKH Ă€UVW VHYHUDO \HDUV WKH VKRZFDVH VXEPLVVLRQV DOO FDPH in the mail with a showcase application, a press kit and a check for $20.00. Now all submissions are electronic press kits and this year we had over 3,000 Free showcase submissions and we’re able to select over 200 acts from our ReverbNation and Sonicbids platforms. In 2016 we’re honored to have David Ivory as Keynote speaker. David has been coming to Harrisburg for years giving up his time to educate and share his experience with musicians. David is also credited with discovering and producing the GRAMMY-winning rock band Halestorm, who he met at Millennium, and helped sign to Atlantic Records in late 2005. Past keynotes include Halestorm in 2013, Bill McGathy (Manager, 3 Doors Down, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd), Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads, Garageband.com & Producer of Violent Femmes, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, No Doubt), Walter McDonough (Future Of Music Coalition), Pat DiNizio (The Smithereens), Brett Scallions (Fuel), 0DWW 3LQĂ€HOG (MTV), Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), David Ellifson (Megadeth), Bruce Warren & Jim Mcguinn (WXPN) and Ken Carson who was PD at 105.7 The X and returns this year as Asheville Sound and Management. Think of an average of 60 speakers each year for 20 years and it’s almost 2,000 music industry professionals coming to Harrisburg, PA in the dead of winter to participate in the MMC. Some of the more famous acts that have participated over the years include: Godsmack, Halestorm, Fuel, Good Charlotte, Crobot, Ryan Bingham, Melody Gardot, Keaton Simons, Future Rock, Kingsfoil, Framing Hanley, Keaton Simons, Teddy Geiger, Big Elf, Charm City Devils and Sister Sparrow & The Dirtybirds. Imaging if you will an average of 250 acts a year for 20 years and it’s close to 5,000 acts and artists coming to Harrisburg in the dead of winter to the MMC. Looking back now it’s safe to say that almost the entire paradigm of the music industry has changed over the last 20 years. The digital revolution has just about made the whole major record label business model a thing of the distant past. Radio is not as relevant either. While the MMC has been through snow and ice storms, recessions, showcase venue and host hotel changes the event as well as the industry evolves. There was a time when we thought MTV would ruin to touring industry but now MTV is irrelevant and the touring industry is stronger than ever. Once constant that has not altered is that acts and artists with the passion to make it in the music business ZLOO Ă€QG D ZD\ WR VXFFHHG ,¡YH EHHQ KRQRUHG WR SHUVRQDOO\ VHH the growth of acts from the midstate like Poison, Live, Kix, Fuel, Halestorm and most recently Crobot; who met Lou Plaia from Reverbnation at Millennium while performing at a hastily moved Pabst Blue Ribbon stage when Gullifty’s double booked their Saturday with a private party. Lou liked what he heard and told his friends at TKO in NYC and ultimately led to a label signing and the current internationally touring act from central Pennsylvania receiving critical acclaim.
“we come together as a community..to validate our work and support the aspirations of emerging talent. We have designed a forum to facilitate networking and the exchange of ideas and experiences that will serve to empower us all in the days to come. In 2003 I wrote

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price
As we arrive in February, I am again looking forward to my “working vacation weekend that is the 20th Annual Millennium Music Conference, happening February 19th thru the 21st at the Best Western Premier – The Central Hotel and Conference Center in Harrisburg. Producer and Grammy-nominated engineer David Ivory will be the keynote speaker at this year’s conference, which also includes music industry panels and seminars, mentoring sessions, the trade show with acoustic stage, and showcase performances throughout the Harrisburg area from nearly 300 different bands and artists from Pennsylvania, the Northeast, and throughout the United States and world. I again look forward to logging quality time with my PA Musician cohorts, touching base with musical friends, networking and meeting new faces, and discovering new talents and sounds. If you are attending, say hello to me at the PA Musician booth area at the trade show, and showcasing bands and artists are also invited to submit their recordings to my 105.9 Qwik-Rock “Homegrown Rocker radio program drop box – one recording will be randomly drawn at the end of the Saturday’s business conference, and that group or artist will win a special guest interview on the March 6th “Homegrown Rocker program! The transition from 2015 into 2016 was a smooth one, and live music helped make that transition pleasant. Before taking a break from stage action to begin the New Year, Half Tempted rang in New Year 2016 at 30 Something. JIM DONOVAN – “SUN KING WARRIORS (no label) In 2005, Jim Donovan amicably left the drum helm of the multi-platinum selling Rusted Root to raise a family, and subsequently developed a satisfying career as a music educator at St. Francis University in Loretto. Eventually, though, the itch to create music started to resurface, and Donovan began to pen songs and subsequently formed his current band project, the Sun King Warriors. He began incrementally recording songs in 2011, with an unexpected 2013 health scare accelerating the recording toward fruition as the “Sun King Warriors CD. Donovan sings, plays guitar and some drums, assisted by guitarists Dan Murphy and Kevin McDonald, bassist Kent Tonkin, and percussionists Bryan Fazio and Harry Pepper; The Clarks’ Rob James contributes additional guitar and mandolin. Described by Donovan as “a mix of feel good grooverock, American roots music and two tons of drums, the disc’s ten tracks evoke a unique stew of sounds, mixing hard rock, reggae, worldbeat, percussion, acoustic and folk tones; at times suggesting Rusted Root powered by classic 1970s/80s arena rock thunder. The music sets the foundation for Donovan’s mostly positive messages about life, love and forward motion. The bouncy opening track,
“Blend Into You,â€? offers a message of love and unity, with an 11-voice ‘Wild Man Shouting Ensemble slamming an exclamation point on the chorus to launch the song’s homestretch. “I’m Doing Fineâ€? is about leaving the past behind and moving ahead, and the anthemic “You Got to Believe Itâ€? triumphantly professes a theme of putting fear and apprehension in the rearview mirror and stepping one’s game up every day. “Oolalalaâ€? rides a punchy, booming reggae rhythm, while drum thunder takes the forefront on the percussive charge “March of the Sun King Warriors.â€? This album contains gentler tones, too – such as Donovan’s soft-spoken vocals and worldly acoustic tones of “Love On Me,â€? the African folk-driven father-to-son ode “The One You’re Growing Into,â€? and the mild and warm vibes of “Can’t Stop Fallingâ€? DQG WKH ORYH Ă€OOHG GLVF FORVHU “The Sunshine.â€? There’s no mistake that Donovan’s heart and soul are invested into these songs, and the entire album rings with passion and enthusiasm. His cast of bandmates and sidemen buy into the music as well, resulting in an uplifting mood that prevails from start to end. Produced, mixed and recorded by Sean McDonald at Red Medicine Recording Studios in Pittsburgh, “Sun King Warriorsâ€? sounds big, deep and vibrant, with vocals, harmonies and instruments coming through clear and distinct. With “Sun King Warriorsâ€?, Jim Donovan crafts a sonic picture of his mind and soul, and based on that picture, he and his life are in a very good place. (The CD can be obtained through the website www. sunkingwarriors.com.) THE HAWKEYES – “ONE PLUG IN THE WALLâ€? (no label) The Hawkeyes formed in 2010 from the merger of members from two Pittsburgh-based alt-country acts, The Jay Wiley Band and The Country Music Gas Station. Their latest CD, “One Plug in the Wallâ€?, hones the group’s brazen brand of driving, roots-based hard rock. Lead singer/guitarist Jay Wiley, lead guitarist/singer Michael Grego, drummer Colin Bronnenkant;
and bassist Brian Chalmers deliver an intense, beefy rock sound informed by classic blues rock, southern-fried rock and rebel country elements over the disc’s nine tracks. The Hawkeyes pull all stops, riding most of the songs toward impassioned peaks before all is said and done. Wiley’s voice goes for broke as he belts out honest words about life, work, ambition and chasing dreams. The opening track “Miracle Man sets the tone with its hard-driving rhythm and proud proclamation of blue-collar roots and ethic. The southern-toned “Ghost is one of several numbers about the tough quest to be a professional musician, while “Davenport is a hardcharging road song. The Hawkeyes describe rugged family living on the stern-edged “Junior, and the disc-closer “Had Enough (Full Force Music) Sterling Koch continues his exploration of steel guitar blues with a more rocking twist on his latest effort, “Rock Slide. Inspired in part by the vinyl classic rock albums of his youth, Koch designed “Rock Slide much like a traditional record album, with eight songs designated on “Sides A and B, and even a vinyl album design for the physical CD itself. Within the album’s “grooves are seven original compositions and one remake; showcasing Koch’s steel/ slide guitar virtuosity and swagger, powered by the steady and punchy rhythms of drummer John Goba and bassist Gene Babula. Guest Jack Kulp’s harmonica wail ushers in the disc’s rousing opening track, the Texas-styled boogie rocker “Shake ‘Em on Down. Koch cowrote three of the songs with South Carolina-based songwriter Freida Gantt; including the pulsating “Sugar, featuring backing vocalist Jennifer Dierwechter, “Good to Go with its Keith Richards-styled rhythm guitar tone and Stone-ish strut, and the uptempo “Comin’ for Your Love.
