ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll

Hey Everyone! Wow.. what a month! This is our 400th issue of the PA Musician Magazine, so it seems appropriate that this is the issue that will push us to our limits. Robin Noll got very sick for the first time since I was born, 38 years ago. Yes, this is Rachel Rocks typing this. Mom is here with me which is amazing, thank you Jesus, but this has been a rough month. Back on Christmas Day she was hit with what we thought was just the flu bug… Turns out she’s been suffering with Kidney Stones for months. We’ve discovered she must have the pain tolerance of an elephant. When we finally got her to the ER and they did a CT scan, the doctor came back in 10 minutes and tapped on her back and asked, “Does this hurt?” Her reply, “Well kinda…” She was taken in for surgery to drain her kidney that was full of pus because it was completely blocked with a stone, well actually 3 stones that are too huge to pass on her own. The first step was getting rid of the infection, so she currently has a tube working as her kidney technically… She still has to have surgery to break up and remove the stones, supposedly surgery to remove her parathyroid gland, and then of course the 3rd surgery to get rid of the tube… Did I mention she doesn’t have insurance?!? Yes, I know… How Horrible!

8

How could she not have insurance! Well, it turns out it was cheaper to just pay the fine then it was to pay the premiums for insurance. Especially since she was so healthy and never went to the doctor let alone the hospital… We tried to apply for Medical Access, but we make just a little too much money. We are trying to apply for some other insurances, but it’s all a little insane trying to figure it all out… Meanwhile the doctors won’t schedule her for more surgery until they figure out how they are getting paid. It’s a very sad situation, but honestly until this paper gets to the printer which should be in the next 30 minutes or so, we really didn’t have the time or the energy to care… So here we are that’s our life, take it or leave it.. Of course Mom says, “God is in control and he will provide, and he will take care of us…” I’ve seen God provide for our family for years and I’ve seen him even help us through this issue as we both have said multiple little prayers to get through it and so far it is happening, so yes.. as Mom says.. DECLARE IT! “God will provide! He will see us through!” Mom can’t deliver the magazines this month… So we will see how that goes. I’m taking time off of my Day Jobs (I have two… Thank you Lenny Yospa at Youth Sports Photo and Amy Bennett at Bright Beginnings Child Development Center for understanding and giving me the time off.) to get the magazines delivered. I am only one girl and I can only drive so far each day. We have people offering to help so I’m hoping and praying it will all work out. Which, we know it will… On to other news some exciting things happening this month are: LoveBettie is coming to Racehorse Tavern on February 17th! They are tons of fun and it’s sure to be a wild party at the Racehorse. Check out their ad for all of the details. Congrats to Tubby’s on celebrating 5 Years of business!! They will be celebrating with Emily’s Toybox also on February 17th. Of course the MMC is February 24th and 25th. You can see the whole venue listing in this issue. Get out there and support local music. If you are at the MMC come see me at our Open Mic Trade Show Booth and play me a song or two. It’s always tons of fun with plenty of shenanigans. Yet another big event is the Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival, also on February 24th-26th. So much amazing entertainment comes to the city of Lancaster. Rich Ruoff does an amazing job at

bringing the nation’s best Roots and Blues music. Last year I went and I was VIP and trust me, it is the first show/ festival I’ve ever been to where you truly do feel like a VIP. You can check it all out on their website, www.lancasterrootsandblues.com. I’m sure there is so much more information to write about. Mom is much better at talking about the future, I’m usually stuck in the past with my article. Please turn the page and check out all of the amazing things our advertisers have to offer. If you go all the way to the back Noteworthy Guitars has one heck of a coupon! Thank you all so much for reading and supporting the PA Musician Magazine. Thanks for putting up with all of our craziness. I know we’re not really “professional” sometimes, we are just average people that are trying to make the world a better place by supporting local music! This has been one heck of a month.. Enjoy the magazine! If you have any questions or comments you can e-mail me at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. Or send Robin a get well e-mail at RNoll@pamusician.net. As usual Daddy we LOVE you.. You will always be my favorite Rockstar! Thank you for all you do for our family and for being the best guitar teacher to my son, Zack. There is nothing like seeing and hearing my Dad teach Zack how to play. You are amazing and I love you oh so much!!! I will always be your little baby. Thank you Jesus for all You’ve done and all You continue to do. Amen.

Love to one & all who have helped me at this time. Everyone has been so good to us. It is truly appreciated.

Love, Robin & Whitey

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks

Holy Camoley! 400 Issues of the PA Musician Magazine!!! Congrats Mom and Dad on keeping the magazine up and running all of these years… It is not an easy task for sure, but it seems that even through family emergencies and craziness we still haven’t missed an issue in over 35 years. In all of those 35 years I do believe this has been one of the craziest months yet, but again here we are... Determined to support local music the best way we know how. Many of you know that Mom, aka the boss, spent some time in the hospital this month. She still luckily got out in time to be able to design the magazine and the ads and get this sucker to the printer! I thought for sure I was going to be flying solo and I started crying out to my

Facebook Family for help and many people responded. Thank you all so much for your support, prayers, and understanding. I know this month as Mom is diligently getting her work done, I’ve been paying a lot closer attention and taking notes. It’s amazing how many little details, clicks, and tricks she just does naturally. It is quite the intense process, and it’s hard to believe that every month for 400 months, she has clicked, clacked, and got it done! The magazine has undergone some major changes since Issue #1, but yet she’s persevered and figured it out each time she is thrown a technological curve ball. She has learned to adapt and change and I’m very proud of everything she has done. It is not easy process, but at 63, we are really hoping she can make it last til retirement. Thank you to all of our advertisers for your support throughout the years. Without you, we wouldn’t be, so thank you from the bottom of my heart! This month between birthdays and hospital stays, I did still manage to get out and see a couple of bands. The first

band this month is Time Bomb at Tubby’s. I was driving down from Perry County and I decided to stop in and see what was happening at Tubby’s on my way home. Ebenezer Screw opened for them. I was bummed to miss them, but it’s always so hard for me to catch opening acts. Every now and then I get lucky and get to a show early, but it’s very rare. Time Bomb is technically the same band that you remember seeing back in 1988, but they’ve underwent a lot of member changes along the way. Their new lead singer Tas Journey is probably younger than the band is old, but he still knows how to belt out all of your favorite 80s music. Louis Vera behind the kit was the last one to join the current line up, but he fits right in and keeps the band rockin’. Overall it was a great night of music that brought back lots of memories as they played through their set list, surprising me with a lot of my favorite iconic 80s rock music. I’m glad I found the energy to stop by. My next night out was after coming down from Liverpool too, so again I stopped at Tubby’s to see The Ryan Alan Band. I know there are quite a few people that get frustrated because I am always going to the same places and seeing the same bands, but sometimes it all just happens because of convenience. I am currently working three jobs, and I’m also a Mom and Wife. It is definitely not easy to find the time, energy, or the money to be able to go out and support music, but I do try my hardest. Thank you to those who do understand and support me and all of my craziness. Now back to The Ryan Alan Band. It was great to see these guys rockin’ the big stage again. All of them have amazing stage presence and are quite the entertainers! Their newest member on bass, Cody Ross Smith, keeps the guys on their toes. He looks more like he should be in a metal band with his long hair head banging along wearing his Black Sabbath t-shirt, but since The Ryan Alan Band is such a rockin’ country band, he fits right in. The Ryan Alan Band sings a great mix of all of your favorite country hits, but also plays their originals that you are sure to love. If you like rockin’ country music, this is definitely the band for you. My next night out I met up with Six Bar Break to sit down and do their cover story interview at Pub on the continued pg. 12...

Out & About continued Trail down in York. It was great to sit down and get to know these guys better. To read all about Six Bar Break and see what they are up to, check out this month’s cover story. After the interview I stayed and listened to them play some acoustic/rock music. They were technically plugged in, but with limited space Dave just used his Djembe. I enjoy hearing a band strip down a little and play an acoustic set once in a while. It’s nice to be able to really see, hear and feel the lyrics. Six Bar Break can play a full night of original music which really helps them get in to some different clubs/restaurants since they don’t have to worry about ASCAP and BMI licenses. It’s sometimes a scary thing for bands to just play all originals, but it’s definitely worked out for Six Bar Break. Please check out their cover story and their ad in this issue so you can see where these guys will be rockin’ next, you won’t be disappointed. After hanging with Six Bar Break for a while I ended the night at Double K with Steel. I’ve had an extremely stressful month and going to see Steel was exactly what I needed. It was amazing just to unwind with good friends and great music. Double K was packed like usual for a

12

Steel show. It was cool to see the guys and their girls from Banished for Life show up and support the guys. It’s always great to see musicians out supporting musicians. It’s not easy to do when everyone always plays at the same time. Every Steel show they finish the night with “Hallowed Be Thy Name” and towards the end of the song the fans form a long line or two of headbangers and the band all gets together and we bow back and forth.. It’s like we are thanking them for amazing us all night with their talent, and they are thanking us for coming out. It is a show ritual and something we all look forward to. It’s a great thing to have something so powerful saved up for the end of their night. I know it’s hard to keep the energy flowing all night long. It’s hard enough as the fan dancing along, I can’t imagine being the one on stage! Somehow, even after over 20 years of performing, Steel does just that. You still have the people that can’t hang that leave after the 2nd set, but for the die-hard fans that love Steel, you never leave until the end. This night they did make a very rare exception and played Rush’s 2112 as their last song because someone really wanted to see and hear Trevis’s insane drum solo. Since I got there late into the night, I’m glad they made the exception. You can check

out Steel’s schedule in this issue and get out there and rock with these guys! I definitely left feeling refreshed and much less stressed out. It’s amazing what music can do for your soul. This month we are blessed with two amazing music conferences/festivals coming to the area, the only bummer is they are the same weekend, February 24-26th. The first one I will tell you about is Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival. This is their 4th year, and I heard it’s getting bigger and better every year. I went to this festival last year and I was truly amazed by all of the talent. Every show I went to I couldn’t believe the caliber of musicians, plus all of the venues were gorgeous. You do have to purchase a pass to attend the events, but trust me, it’s worth it! This is also one festival that makes their VIP Experience a TRUE VIP experience. You get all kinds of amazing perks like prime seating, free food, wine, and this year they even added in special private performances only for VIP guests. They also have Master Classes available during the day that I heard are definitely worth every penny. The other very convenient part of this festival is you can technically walk to every venue, or you can always Uber if it’s freezing outside. You can check out their full list of performers, venues, and classes at www.lancasterrootsandblues.com. The next conference is the Millennium Music Conference. This year they are celebrating 21 years!! We’ve sponsored the MMC all 21 years and this year is no different. It is a crazy weekend filled to the brim with so much music it sometimes gets overwhelming. It all technically starts Thursday the 23rd with the bag stuffing shenanigans, and then the big kick-off party right there in the host hotel’s very own O’Reilly’s Pub at 7pm. The conference itself officially starts Friday with panels and mentoring throughout the day, along with our PA Musician Magazine, open mic stage right on the trade show floor. Our Open Mic stage is first come first served, we don’t want the attendees to miss any amazing panels, so when they get a break, what’s a better way to relax then play a song or two on our stage. You never know who might be walking by or listening. It gives all of us at the conference a little tease so you can convince us to come to your showcase. With over 250 artists and 28 venues to go to, trust me, there are plenty of choices. You can go out Friday and Saturday nights to the different venues and hear the music, some places charge a cover, but there is plenty of free venues that you can go to and hear music you’ve never heard before. You do have to register to attend the panels and the tradeshow, but you can get two full days of everything music for only $75! (Sorry you missed the early-bird special). Lord willing I will be there manning the PA Musician Magazine booth and keeping the music flowing on our open mic stage. You can also swing by our stage and check out Dave’s amazing Antique Digital Grand Piano, it’s definitely something worth seeing and hearing! I hope to see you at the MMC. I’m sure it’s going to be a crazy, good time. You can check out all of the details and see full panel descriptions and venue information at www.musicconference.net. Last but not least, with all of these festivals and for just bands in general!!! Don’t forget to tell the crowd WHO YOU ARE!! I know sometimes you don’t have a fancy banner, and that’s fine… but if you have to, write your name on a napkin and hang it from the floor monitors… but for heaven’s sake at least SAY YOUR NAME.

President Barack Obama’s farewell gift to some of his longtime staffers was a private concert from “The Boss.” A senior White House official says Bruce Springsteen performed a roughly two-hour acoustic concert Jan. 12 for members of Obama’s staff, mostly people who had served for all eight years of his presidency. There were no cameras present for the event. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss a private event and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. Willie Nelson wants his friend Loretta Lynn, who recently revealed that she tried marijuana for the first time at the age of 84 for her glaucoma but didn’t like it, to give pot a second chance. “She’s got a lot of guts,” Nelson said, “She’ll try anything. Maybe I should help her.” The 83-year-old outlaw country icon recently attached his name to a line of legal marijuana being sold in Colorado and Washington called “Willie’s Reserve,” after decades of personally advocating for the legalization of marijuana. “You look and see the benefits. I think marijuana is probably the safest medicine you can take.” George Michael, who rocketed to stardom with WHAM! and went on to enjoy a long and celebrated solo career lined with controversies, died on Christmas Day. Six Bar Break~Distinctive Rock that Gets Into Your Soul

Article & Photos by: Rachel Rocks Six Bar Break is the #1 Rock Band according to the they will be able to easily tell how great of musicians they ReverbNation charts, and according to anyone listening truly are. So far it has definitely worked in their favor. It to them play at their shows. The rock scene is very was pretty hard to decide on just one cover song, but after competitive in the Harrisburg area, but these guys are much deliberation they chose “Fortunate Son”. They holding steady at #1, and in the Regional chart they are know they are all fortunate sons to be out there playing floating around in the top 5. Pretty impressive for only their music to anyone who will listen, so it seemed like three guys that have been playing together for only three the perfect fit. One positive to being able to play a full years. night of original music, it really opens the doors to extra Ben Bollinger is the main master mind behind Six Bar places they can play. With the licensing fees for ASCAP Break. Back in 2011 Ben defeated thyroid cancer. During and BMI sky rocketing there are more and more venues that difficult battle he wrote a lot of songs, even though that stopped having live music because they don’t want deep inside was a fear that he would never sing again. to be fined, as long as the bands only play original music, Ben’s songs are based on stories and real-life experiences. they don’t have to worry about that. Instead Ben replied to the ad and got the position. After things of letting it destroy them, Six Bar Break took all of his got stagnant with that band they decided to start playing advice to heart, they took their song “The End” and as Six Bar Break. Their original drummer didn’t work out, but when they found Dave Long, “they knew they found their unicorn.” He was so rare and such a perfect fit, they knew he must be some sort of miracle! Thanks to all of the original songs that Ben wrote, they were able to quickly develop a full night of music with currently, 48 original songs. Out of all of those songs they already have one EP complete “Echo Seven Nine”. Roughly in one 3 hour show they play about 30 songs which leaves them some wiggle room to be able to change up their set-list too. They do have one cover song that they can play if they are allowed. Jim DeLisio, the club owner of The Racehorse Tavern told Six Bar Break that if they have at least one cover song that they play, it will help new people in the crowd relate to what they are playing,

was time to record their latest CD, “Broken Road”, they saved up their pennies and went to Progressive Studios with Joe Trojcak and Fred Pellegrini. They literally just got done in the studio, it only took them about 2 weeks to get everything recorded. They had a great experience with Joe and Fred. They are glad they were still able to have the freedoms to record like they wanted to, they just had a little more guidance and much better recording equipment! Now hopefully in 10-12 weeks they will be releasing “Broken Road” to the public. They are very grateful for the constructive criticism they received and the guidance they were given to help improve their recording skills. Every time I’ve seen Six Bar Break I’m impressed Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

Ben Bollinger “Ben’s voice is very distinctive and really helps Six Bar Break have a very unique sound, with a twist of a roots and blues feel to their sound.” — Rachel Rocks with Ben’s creative ways of recording their shows and even streaming live on Facebook and Periscope so their friends at home can still enjoy the show. One thing I’ve always appreciated about these guys is how they are very selective about what they post on Facebook. They don’t jam your news feed with tons of reminders or stupid posts. You know if you see something posted from them it will be worth your time to check it out. They are also big fans of ReverbNation, they have a great platform for bands to be able to share their music, dates, etc.. Through ReverbNation they’ve also submitted to different contests. One of those was getting their song “The End” on a Country Blast Compilation CD with a company out of LA. You can catch Six Bar Break at Legends in Gettysburg on February 3rd as part of the Gettysburg Rocks Festival. They will also be performing their MMC Showcase at the Fieldhouse in Etters on February 24th. You can check out their full schedule on their website, www.sixbarbreak. com, or on any of their other social platforms. You can also purchase their music on iTunes, Google Play, etc… The guys of course have a huge list of people that they would like to thank for getting them this far, unfortunately we only have so much space. They obviously want to thank all of their family and their friends for their constant support. They also wanted to thank Keith Link from Link’s Music for teaching Ben how to write, John Nasser, Jeff Pittinger from Pipeline TV, Jason Shaffer, Danny Boyer, Fred Pellegrini, Joe Trojcak, Rob Simon, and everyone else that has helped them along the way in their musical journey. They of course wanted to give a huge shout out to Monica, Ben’s wife, for allowing them to practice in their home, and for keeping them on track. Having a successful band definitely takes an army, and they are very fortunate to have a huge one. “Amen! Love, Six Bar Break” 15

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price

For a lot of people, winter descends into two to three months of doldrums and cabin fever after the holiday season winds down. But one of my favorite weekends of the year happens later this month, with the 21st installment of the annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. Happening Feb. 23-25 at the Best Western Premier – The Central Hotel and Conference Center in Harrisburg, this year’s Millennium looks to be an exciting one, highlighted by keynote speakers Brandon Yeagley of Crobot and Chad Taylor of Live. And I eagerly look forward to the other features of the conference, including music industry panels and seminars, mentoring sessions, the trade show with the PA Musician Magazine’s acoustic stage, and – of course – showcase performances throughout the Harrisburg area from nearly 300 different bands and artists from Pennsylvania, the Northeast, and beyond. If you’re attending, come visit me and the rest of the PA Musician crew at the trade show. And Millennium bands and artists are again invited to submit recordings into my 105.9 Qwik-Rock “Homegrown Rocker” radio program drop box for airplay on the show – one recording will be randomly drawn at the end of Saturday’s trade show, with the winner scoring an instant guest interview on the March 12 edition of the program! Since the last deadline, we transitioned into the New Year 2017, and for me, live music was again a big part of that transition. I started closing out 2016 on New Year’s Eve by attending the First Night State College

celebration, which featured activities, ice sculptures and live music at various locations throughout downtown State College. After procuring my First Night button (which enables you admission into the performance venues and supports the festival), my first stop was State College Presbyterian Church to see the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective. Seven ukulelists strong this night, the Kollective blended their uke skills on a variety of popular hits and standards, including Tin Pan Alley-era tunes such as “Has Anybody Seen My Gal” and “Side By Side,” “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya” and more. In between songs, Kollective main man Mike Holzer provided information and insight about ukuleles and the joys of playing them. The Kollective followed the performance with a ukulele workshop for aspiring uke players. (On a sad note, this performance would be the final time I would see area musician and educator Dr. Dave Parry on stage before he passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 3; read his obituary elsewhere in this month’s issue.) I next headed to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church to see Natascha & the Spy Boys. They sounded great on a variety of jazz, blues, pop, swing and soul numbers. Namesake and singer Natascha Hoffmeyer sounded great, providing sultriness and soul as she varied her intensity from song to song. John “JT Blues” Thompson sparkled on the keys, and guest Doug McMinn added flavor with tasteful bursts of clarinet and saxophone along the way. Bassist Rob Gardner showed skill on upright and electric basses, and Stubby Stubbs provided just the right rhythmic touches. The group stirred souls and generated cheers from the audience as they performed several original numbers, plus songs from Tom Waits, Rachael Yamagata, Annette Hanshaw, Nina Simone, the recently-departed Sharon Jones and more. I next headed across Locust Lane to Faith United

Church of Christ to experience some progressive jazz flavors with the Rick Hirsch 3. This turned into a fun performance; Rick told the audience at the onset that he wasn’t sure what the group was going to play this night, but promised everyone it would be good. This set the tone for a lot of musical improvisation, as Rick on sax (and occasionally piano), Joshua Davis on upright bass and Kevin Lowe on drums innovated on the spot and played off one another, coming up with spontaneous and inventive takes on a variety of selections. They displayed dazzling, freewheeling musicianship on such numbers as Thelonius Monk’s “Monk’s Dream,” Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” numbers from Sting and Dizzy Gillespie, a tango number and more. Rick also announced and offered a new CD by his Big Ol’ Band project, called “Pocono Git-Down”, which features special guest Alex Meixner on accordion. Following First Night, I headed to the Port Matilda Hotel in Port Matilda to welcome New Year 2017 while enjoying a new group, The Bigs. Four members strong this night, The Bigs kept the crowd happy with their mix of classic rock, funk and blues, doing tunes from Chuck Berry, Black Crowes, Allman Brothers, Bad Company, Foghat, Marshall Tucker Band, Jimi Hendrix and more. Lead singer Nick Stahlman and Caleb Mitchell provide a twin-edged guitar attack, backed by the fatherand-son rhythm section of Ray “Bink” Eisenhuth on drums and Nathan “Tubz” Eisenhuth on bass. (A fifth member, acoustic guitarist Ben Leskovansky, was not in the roster this night.) The Bigs gave an enthusiastic performance, several times expanding songs into freewheeling jams. Nick did a good job on vocals, and also wailed some harmonica on a few tunes, including Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” The crowd liked The Bigs enough to demand two encores at the end continued pg. 21...

of the night; the group responded with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and a rendition of “Deep Ellum Blues.” Watch for The Bigs as they continue to arrive on area stages in 2017; they return to the Port Matilda Hotel on Feb. 11. Another new band I saw early in this New Year was SuperPhuzz as they entertained at the Phyrst in State College early last month. Featuring former Shake Shake Shake member Steve Harman on lead vocals and lead guitar, Jason Adams on trombone, harmonica and backing vocals, Jason Hannon on saxophone, Jordan Thompson on drums and fill-in bassist Mark Holland (subbing for Mike Elliott this night); SuperPhuzz broke out an unpredictable array of sounds – as I arrived, they were mashing together takes on Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime,” Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4” and Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” into a freewheeling, brass-powered medley. These guys threw down the party, mixing and fusing together tunes from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ take on “Love Rollercoaster,” Duran Duran, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and more. Although the Phyrst crowd was small due to Penn State students still being out of town for holiday break, the folks who did attend enjoyed the buzz that SuperPhuzz was generating, and this group should be one to keep an eye open for on Happy Valley stages and beyond. I also caught my first look at T.V. Blonde last month as they entertained at The Arena in State College. This group threw a good party, performing an energetic mixture of pop, rock and dance favorites. T.V. Blonde is strong – singer Jackie Wesley packs a great voice with enthusiasm, stage energy and presence, backed by the seasoned Centre region corps of guitarist Dave Plisco, bassist Joe Lorenzo and drummer Adam Rider. They kept dancers and fans happy with music from the likes of No Doubt, Elle King, One Republic, Duran Duran,

February, 2017

Prince, Pink, Blondie, Fall Out Boy, Loverboy, Joan Jett, Roxette and many more. T.V. Blonde’s pacing was tight; they steadily delivered song after song, with very few gaps in the musical action. This too is a band on the rise; watch for T.V. Blonde on stages throughout the region. As they started 2017, Mama Corn marked their tenth year as a band and celebrated the release of their third full-length CD, “Live and Learn”, with a special CD-release show last month at Hollidaysburg’s Old Canal Inn. Singer/banjo player Jeremy Nelson, singer/guitarist Bruce Forr, singer/harmonica/dobro player John Stevens and singer/upright bassist Bryan Homan did multiple songs from the new album as well as their other favorites. One of the big highlights from the new disc was “Nobody Died,” a song co-written with bluegrass legend Peter Rowan that addresses the trend for bluegrass songs to have a body count; everybody lives in this song. Mama Corn also played new tunes such as “In the High Rise,” “Slow Train,” “Hard Times Down the Road,” “The Last Thing on My Mind,” “Black Crow,” the title song “Live and Learn” and “Sing!” Guest Doug Forshey joined the group to play additional guitar and sing on a tune he cowrote on the new album, “Big Ol’ Moon.” And Mama Corn did many of their other favorites, such as “About a Minute Ago,” “Someday Knock on Wood,” “The Hanging of Alfred Andrews,” “Peggy-O,” “Goin’ Up the Mountain,” “Another Couple Days,” “Smoked Country Jam,” “Holding Pen,” plus versions of Crosby Stills & Nash’s “Helplessly Hoping,” Banjo & Sullivan’s (actually, Rob Zombie’s) “I’m at Home Getting Hammered While She’s Out Getting Nailed,” a bluegrass take on the Bee Gees’ “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart” and more. The Old Canal Inn’s basement area was packed and the mood was happy and fun, as the ‘Corn and their legion of ‘Corn-stalkers’ whooped it up. Mama Corn returns to the Old Canal Inn March 25.

One of the final shows I saw in 2016 happened at McGarvey’s in Altoona during late December, featuring the double-bill of One Adam 12 and Black Ridge. Under way when I arrived, One Adam 12 was performing original songs from their arsenal. They did tunes from their “Ear Worm” CD such as “Citizen’s X,” “Dead Horse,” “Devil’s Lullaby,” “Bitch,” “Bates Motel,” “Devil on My Back” and more. One Adam 12 has steadily forged their own identifiable original sound; singer/ continued pg. 23...

THE PROFESSOR continued.... Rummell’s distinctive voice and style helps give the group’s sound its own identity, and powerful backdrops from guitarist Bill Stiles, bassist Joe Stiles and drummer Brandon Adams plus creative use of samples kept things interesting from start to end. Black Ridge then capped the evening with their entertaining set, celebrating classic rock, funk, soul and R&B. Opening with the one-two punch of Crazy Elephant’s “Gimme Gimme Good Lovin’” into Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin,’” Black Ridge rocked and grooved with tunes from Bill Withers, Classics IV, Ides Of March, Sly & the Family Stone, Average White Band, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan and more. They also did original tunes from their recently-issued self-titled CD such as “No Love,” “Down the Road” and “Too (Somethin’ Like This).” Alec Zander Redd did a fine job on sax and vocals, and guitarist Paul Chakot packed some grit into his singing as well; backed by guitarist Matt Bortz, bassist Cody Lemmon and drummer Seth Ross (who has since been replaced by new drummer Mike Conrad). Black Ridge took their song selection and made it their own, and their performance was upbeat, consistent and exciting. Both of these groups are well worth discovering in 2017. McGarvey’s provided a dose of hearty metal thunder early last month with a triple-bill that featured Samara, Plaguewielder and Black Sun. Work duties prevented me from getting to see Samara’s set, and I only got to witness the final two songs of Plaguewielder’s set. What I heard sounded impressive, as the Ohiobased group did intense, roaring, Sabbath-rooted metal with some hardcore elements mixed in. Dedicating their performance in memory of Dr. Dave Parry (who had passed away a few days before this show), Black Sun unleashed their brand of angular, heavy and expansive metal/rock. Frontman Todd McKeone, guitarist Jason Feathers, bassist David Mollica and drummer Nate Woods escalated each composition to a feverish pitch, with each musician pushing the limits of intensity. Todd’s forceful howls, Jason’s heated and intricate guitar soloing, and frenzied rhythms from David and Nate kept the McGarvey’s audience engaged, headbanging and cheering, and prompted a demand for an encore to close out the night. McGarvey’s also featured an acoustic triple-bill last month, featuring Derek Gresh, The Whatleys and the duo of Rik Golden and Rick Ramsey. Although work obligations prevented me from seeing

February, 2017

Derek’s night-opening set, I was informed that Rick Ramsey accompanied Derek on guitar as he performed several new songs from his new project collaboration, Nag Champions. I arrived shortly into The Whatleys’ acoustic set. This night the trio of singers/guitarists Eddie “Fraud” Fisher and Hiro McNulty plus guitarist TJ Frech, The Whatleys mixed new and established original tunes, plus the ‘obligatory’ Misfits cover – a version of “Skulls.” The ‘Rik & Rick’ duo then finished the night with a loose set that mixed original tunes with select covers. They opened with their own obligatory Misfits cover, “Hybrid Moments,” before doing several of Rik Golden’s original tunes such as “Something Else,” “Brown Eye Mary” and “Jonny Leatherjacket,” as well as digging into the back catalogs of the Full Time Kings and The Marauders to do “Don’t Bother Me” and “Valentine” respectively. When audience members wanted more at night’s end, Rik and Rick delivered some Johnny Cash favorites, doing “Ring of Fire” and taking a stab at “Cocaine Blues.” ‘Twas the eve before Christmas Eve, and The Beatlemaniacs were stirring with some Fab Four cheer at

Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

Patton’s Thirsty Dawg Taverne. This night the lineup of drummer/singer Jerry Carnicella, guitarist/singer Bob Helbig and bassist Tim Homerski, the Beatlemaniacs celebrated the hits of the Beatles plus other 1960s and 1970s classics, with a few surprises thrown in. The group did Fab Four favorites as “Yellow Submarine,” “All My Loving,” “8 Days a Week,” “Revolution” and more. They dropped in some bits of humor, as Jerry shared his vision of vodka diplomacy with the Russians for the New Year before launching into “Back in the USSR,” and the group broke into an a cappella rendition of the “Dick Van Dyke Show” and other television show themes. They also did hits from Willie Nelson, CCR, Wild Cherry, Steppenwolf, the John Denver double-shot of “Take Me Home Country Roads” and “Rocky Mountain High,” and Jerry’s daughter Maria stepped up to belt out some great voice on the Doobie Brothers’ “Long Train Runnin.’” A festive hometown crowd graced the Thirsty Dawg, and The Beatlemaniacs’ fun vibes helped set the happy tone for the Christmas holiday to follow. Asbury Lane brought their pleasant sounds to continued pg. 24....

THE PROFESSOR continued.... to Altoona’s Railroad City Brewing Company in late December. With guest Jack Coyle helping out on harmonica, singer Tami Hinish and singer/ guitarist Jeremy Schimansky played a relaxing mix of classic acoustic folk, rock, pop and country numbers. Asbury Lane tapped the John Prine catalog several times with classics such as “Blow Up Your TV” and “Angel from Montgomery,” and also broke out favorites like Barenaked Ladies’ “Just Like Brian Wilson Did,” Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin,’” Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds,” Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See,” Garth Brooks’ “Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old” and more. What I really enjoy about Asbury Lane is that they have the ability to bring you to an emotional standstill with their music – especially when Tami starts singing Patty Griffin’s “Ten Million Miles” – her calm, reserved voice and delicate touch make you stop conversations, pay full attention and become immersed in the moment. This duo is quietly becoming a very special musical commodity; if you have not yet experienced Asbury Lane, make a point to do so this year! Launched last spring as an acoustic offshoot project of local ‘80s hair-band celebrants Hair Force One, Teazed recently expanded from a trio to a quintet with the additions of bassist Mike Stanley and drummer Shawn Gioiosa. While their focus remains on the acoustic side of the 1980s rock spectrum, the expanded Teazed plugged in last month to bring electricity to the stage of the newly-christened Club Kryptonite (formerly 30 Something) in Altoona. Mike and Shawn joined singer Justin Dell, guitarists Jason Berardi and Jim Mincin to celebrate the 1980s “decade of decadence” with favorites from Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, AC/DC and more. Teazed kept the dance floor busy, and dance floor activity soon spilled onto the stage, with dancers busting their moves alongside band members. When the crowd demanded an encore, Teazed obliged them with a version of Ugly Kid Joe’s “Everything About You” to close out the night. Wintry precipitation failed to thwart R2B2’s party last month at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub. With Altoona area roads in decent shape by show time, R2B2 was able to light up a packed house with their fun mix of rock, pop and funk favorites. The grooves were hot as guitarists Rick Wertz and Ric Criste, bassist Fritz Wyland, keyboardist Mary Villani and drummer Beau Saller kept the upper level dance floor hopping with tunes from the Commodores, KC & the Sunshine Band, Parliament, Al Green, Escape Club, Elle King, Outkast and many more. All five band members shared singing duties, with Rick and Mary handling the lion’s share. The Family Pizza crowd didn’t want the party to end and demanded an encore, which the group answered with the Ric-fronted rendition of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.” To reference one of the Commodores tunes that R2B2 did this night, this upbeat and happy show left the audience and myself feeling “sanctified!”

The Band OZ frequently closes out weekends with weekly Sunday evening performances at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg. During one such show last month, The Band OZ mixed up classic rock, blues and jazz favorites. Guest Craig Albright contributed some hot guitar licks through the evening, joining singer/guitarist Don Osborn, bassist Bill Hunter, keyboardist Ken Civils and drummer Jeff Crownover as they performed selections from Steely Dan, Derek & the Dominos, B.B. King, Freddie King, Robert Cray, Robben Ford, Jonny Lang and more, and even had folks dancing to Weather Report’s “Birdland!” Guest Bill Hocherl joined in on bongos during the group’s latter two sets. The Band OZ frequently welcomes special guests during their weekly U.S. Hotel visits, and their pleasant mixture of sounds is always well worth checking out. Also on Sunday nights, Felix & the Hurricanes help close out weekends with their weekly shindig at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. During one such Sunday

last month, as a number of the Black & Gold’s blackand-gold-clad patrons celebrated the Pittsburgh Steelers’ divisional playoff win over Kansas City, the Hurricanes provided the nightcap with their blend of classic rock, blues and favorites. With Pat McGinnis handling bass and some singing duties this night alongside lead ‘Cane, singer and guitarist Felix Kos and drummer Bob Watters, the Hurricanes broke out some songs I hadn’t heard in a while that Pat sings lead on, such as Al Green’s “I’m a Ram,” Jimmy Reed’s “Bright Lights Big City” and more. The group also did favorites from Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers, Chris Stapleton, Eric Clapton,CCR, Boz Scaggs and more. It was fun to watch these musicians match wits on their respective instruments, and share some witty banter between songs that fired up the laughter and made for a fun ending to the night. Other performers I saw recently included the last few songs of Fyre’s set as they closed out a preChristmas metal music bill at McGarvey’s, and numerous performers during the weekly Tuesday Open Mic Night hosted by the Backyard Rockers at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg. News and notes: Area party band This Albatross will take time off from live stage action while singer Autumn Shiffler logs some hospital time for surgery early this month; the group expects to return to live performing in early May…Now based in Denver, Colorado, former area musician Jason McIntyre has former LeMont, a new band project featuring several of Jason’s former colleagues from The Rustlanders and Contraband; their debut CD, “Bloomsday,” will be released in spring; but a special limited-edition pre-release of the album will be unveiled when LeMont performs at Elk Creek Café in Millheim on Feb. 4…Electrify the Farm and singer/ guitarist Rue Moyer have parted ways; Rue will continue in a solo direction, while the rest of the group reboots under the new name No Man’s Band; they are writing new original song material, and will debut their new incarnation at McGarvey’s on Feb. 4…Guitarist Chris DellaPorta is stepping away from popular Harrisburgbased southern rockers Smokin’ Gunnz after a twelveyear run…Two former members of popular Altoona-based

PA MUSICIAN REVIEWS By Jim Price

SHANNON AND THE MERGER – “LONG WAY DOWN” (no label) Formed in 2012, Shannon and the Merger have honed their stylistic blend of rock, pop, blues and country on southwestern PA stages, culminating in their 11-song debut CD, “Long Way Down”. Namesake Shannon Watson is front and center, displaying a soaring, punchy voice and delivery; backed by guitarist Bob Giacometti, harmonica player Stanley Mikolajek, bassist Ryan Luko and drummer Murray Perry. The group delivers wellcrafted, catchy melodies and arrangements that bring them to life. Each song is unique and reveals different aspects of Shannon and the Merger’s collective musical personality. This group can rock, evidenced by such tracks as the disc-opener “World of Make Believe,” a commentary piece about lies and deception in our current world. The group also fires up harder rock on “Inches,” the title track “Long Way Down” and the punk-fueled “Elemental.” Shannon and the Merger get the funk out on the Bob-fronted “Fast Train to Memphis,” and demonstrate a reggae edge on “Affected.” Blues informs the group’s sound as well, demonstrated on the slinky “Aim to Misbehave,” nicely accented by Stanley’s staccato harmonica riff, and on the retro-geared “Let’s Go” with its reminders of classic Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. Shannon’s vocal range shines on the acoustic-driven “Blow Up,” and she and the group dabble in country-styled balladry with “Heal It With a Kiss” and the disc-closer “The Only Thing Missing Is You.” The presentation is bright, enthusiastic and fun, and Shannon’s voice lifts and shines throughout the disc. The instrumental performances are strong, with tight rhythms, sturdy guitar work, and unsung hero Stanley providing flavorful harmonica virtuosity at just the right moments. Engineered, mixed and produced by Josh Gerba, this disc sounds crisp and vibrant, with all components of the group’s sound coming through clearly. “Long Way Down” provides a strong introduction to the musical world of Shannon and the Merger, and reveals a band with fresh song ideas and the skills to bring those ideas to life. (The CD can be obtained through Shannon and the Merger’s website, www.shannonandthemerger.com.)

Jane’s Addiction and Blind Melon. Wings That Buzz crafts punchy, concise melodies, and generates warm instrumental and inventive vocal arrangements to bring them to life. Vocal harmonies accent and punctuate the melodies, while Matlock’s violin flourishes, Funk’s occasional electric guitar bursts and Allen’s keyboard fills contribute additional edges and depth to the overall presentation. The prevailing song moods tend toward happy, upbeat and even whimsical at times. A violin prelude ushers in the churning disc-opener “Still Dreamin’” and its loose theme of hope, while moving forward and embracing life’s changes informs “Transition Is the Mission” with its tricky vocal cadence. The rustic “Groundling” embraces more of an Americana flavor, and “Blue Rendezvous” taps a more prominent blues foundation. Two of the more intriguing songs on the album are “Mercy of It All,” which evolves from a dreamy

beginning toward a more ethereal finish, and “Hoping to Be Wrong,” which abruptly shifts moods from tranquil to angry during its homestretch. The performances are strong and steady through the disc’s 11 tracks, and the album sounds consistent from start to end. The mix is smooth and balanced, enabling the group’s voices and instrumental layers to fully fill the spaces through each song. “Every Pretty Thing” exhibits the steady evolution of Wings That Buzz’s unique style and sound, and shows that these wings are soaring progressively higher. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www. wingsthatbuzz.com.)

WINGS THAT BUZZ – “EVERY PRETTY THING” (no label) Mercersburg-based guitarists Jason Kipe and Klaus Funk formed Wings That Buzz in 2011, and the group has since grown to five members strong with the additions of keyboardist Caitlin Allen, bassist Dave Holzwarth and violinist Scott Matlock. Their third album, “Every Pretty Thing” demonstrates the group’s acousticdriven sound, which finds a comfortable middle ground between the classic folk-rock traditions of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the more acoustic leanings of 1990s-era alternative rock practitioners like February, 2017

Dr. Dave Parry passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday evening, January 3rd, 2017 He was 58.

A native of Allentown, Dave was a popular and respected musician and educator in the Altoona area. He sang, played guitar, ukulele and more. He was very knowledgeable about music, especially blues and roots music. He graced area stages over the years, appearing as a solo performer at coffeehouses and open mics, and also led blues-geared band projects such as the Porch Dogs, Flying Debris and 9 Lb. Hammer. In more recent years, Dave was a guitarist and singer with the Allegheny Bilge Rants Shanty Choir (a pirate-themed performing group that appeared at area festivals and other venues), and he was a member of the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective. His final public performance took place with the Kollective on New Year’s Eve at the State College Presbyterian Church during State College’s First Night celebration. Dave was also a popular and esteemed professor at Penn State Altoona, where he taught philosophy and ethics. He also served as a faculty senator and in other capacities. He was a member of the Penn State Altoona family for 30 years. “I had Dave for many classes and even served a stint in the Hammer with him,” said current Black Sun and Blacksnakes guitarist Jason Feathers. “I loved the fact that Dave enjoyed playing some rather obscure stuff and had no fear to put it out there. He turned me on to some great stuff. Our conversations could swing from Plato to Robert Johnson to Nietzsche and back to R.L. Burnside. He was a genius and a unique talent.” Former area musician Joe Caracciolo, who played keys alongside Dave in Flying Debris, added, “Dr. David Parry was one of the greatest mentors I have ever had the privilege of knowing…‘Dr. Dave’ as he was affectionately known was a brilliant scholar of the works of Umberto Eco as well as towering continental thinkers such as Hegel, Kant, Husserl, Rousseau, and more. He was a brilliant blues musician.” Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dave’s surviving family, friends and colleagues.
