December? How can it be December already. The last few months of the year is when we get many opportunities to gather with our loved ones and friends and it’s always good to gather together to celebrate life. I finally decided to take time to go to the Kix concert this year. Every year for the last several, John Harris along with WTPA have been bringing Kix to the Radisson in Camp Hill to start off the Holiday Season with a blast. Kix does bring the party and it is an opportunity to see so many people that I know and at least talk to on Facebook and so many clients and with the business and music lovers but I never actually get to see them so it was nice seeing so many and the music by everyone involved was fabulous, it got the cobwebs out of my head. We left before Kix was done but we slowly meandered out so we could hear one more song. They were playing a lot of the old favorites. After Kix we went to Chick’s in Hummelstown to hear Frayed Nott and I finally got to meet Dave and the band. That was cool. He has been advertising for awhile now. They are breaking in
a new vocalist so now there will be four of them. It will give them more diversity in their repertoire. They still do the heavy rock but they wanted to mix it up. I must admit I was getting a bit sleepy and still had to drive back up to Liverpool. I also got to meet Karen and Jim, owners of the Double K. They closed early and headed to Chick’s to check out the band and Karen use to work at Chick’s before she opened her own place. It’s amazing how small the music community is and how tight knit. All working together to support each other in our various musical endeavors. Talking about supporting each other it’s the time of year that we want to buy gifts for our loved ones. Please support our local music stores. We have several that are ready to help you get that perfect musical gift for your favorite musician. You can also get concert tickets from SLP Concerts or various other locations. If you do go out try to go out with friends and designate a driver so everyone can be safe. It’s crazy out there and it doesn’t take much to be over the legal limit anymore. I’m kind of repeating what Rachel wrote. I drove to Bethlehem the other day to interview John, the owner of Guitar Villa. It was very interesting to hear about his musical career and endeavors. So often we consider those in the bands to be the music community when it is so much bigger than that. There’s music stores, promoters, school programs, teachers, instructors, fans (where would we be without the fans) Yes, there’s a lot more to the music community than what one thinks. One of our old writers, Steve Morrow, has a gig out in California. On Sunday, December 3rd, from 6pm till 11:30pm, six American bands from both coasts will perform at the legendary Sunset Strip nightclub the Whisky A Go Go, 8901 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s

Disease. SPIDERS & SNAKES (featuring Hollywood underground icon Lizzie Grey), REBEL REBEL, MOLLY VAMP and BLACK HEROIN GALLERY – all from Los Angeles – will join the stage with MITCHELL JAMES and THE BILLTOWN ALL-STARS - who hail from PA. This all ages show is being produced by Tim Yasui, a local Los Angeles Record Company executive and a musician who is also a long-time member of the band Spiders & Snakes and more recently, The Billtown AllStars. Says Yasui “when I lost my mother to Alzheimer’s Disease and witnessed first-hand the destruction of mind and body caused by this horrible disease, I knew then that I wanted to make a difference. As a drummer/vocalist and recording artist myself, the answer to my prayers laid in my own two hands – literally – and since her death I’ve produced five successful concerts to raise money towards Alzheimer’s Research.” In the hustle and bustle of life I’m striving to keep my focus on God, the older I get the more I realize that He is the only one and thing worth pursuing. This last year He has been revealing some spiritual truths to me that simply bless me beyond measure. May this Holiday season bring you to a closer relationship to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, He truly is the reason for the season and we desperately need His help and strength to get through our lives journey. It’s hard to believe this is my last article of 2017. What happened to this year… it seemed to zoom by in a flurry of craziness. I apologize I haven’t been as supportive as I would’ve liked. I didn’t do as good at “spreading the love” as usual.. I pretty much stuck close to home this year, mainly because of the nastiness we call “time”, and the lack of it. If you saw me Out & About consider yourself lucky! Or unlucky however you want to view it.. lol. This month I finally made it out to see quite a few bands. It all started out many nights ago when I was actually on the way home from delivering Lancaster and I saw a Facebook post that Jeff from Element 22 and Darrell from Asking Andy were playing an acoustic show together at the Hershey Vineyards. It’s awesome that the wineries are hosting so much live music. It’s a great combo, and most of the wineries in the area have plenty of space for live music. I have to admit this one was a little strange. They literally had a projector shining directly into the corner where the guys were playing and part of the game was projecting right on Darrell’s face! I personally thought the most ironic part is how much Darrell already hates football. There were plenty of other “screens” throughout the room, it was a shame they wouldn’t turn that one off while the guys were playing. Football or not, the guys did a great job and entertained everyone there and by the end they were even taking requests to make sure all of their fans knew how much they were appreciated. The following weekend I headed out to the Winner’s Circle for Smokin Gunnz. I haven’t been out to the Winner’s Circle in a super long time. It was awesome to see

the room packed on a Saturday with standing room only. It was my first time seeing Smokin Gunnz new guitar player, Zach Beers on the stage. He’s definitely been working hard to make sure he is up to par with the rest of the Gunnz. He already fits in great and has his own fan club! Smokin Gunnz doesn’t necessarily play a lot of the boot scootin’ songs the line dancers are used to, but I was impressed to see how so many of the dancers improvised without complaining. I also managed to make it to Hollywood Casino on Thanksgiving Eve to see the Smokin Gunnz rockin the stage at Hollywood. It was awesome to see them on such a cool stage. It stinks not being able to take my camera in there, but at least it allows me to let loose and have a good time without worrying about taking pictures all night. Thanksgiving Eve was a long one, I got a late start because my dog has been sick, but I still managed to make up for it. After Smokin Gunnz I headed back to the Winner’s
Circle for Darrell’s newest band, Honkytonk Medics. The Honkytonk Medics did a great job at playing more of the modern country, or shall I say a more danceable country. For a new band they have quite the repertoire of songs. They were also able to take requests to help keep dancers on the dance floor. The Honkytonk Medics usually play more on the eastern side of the state, but have recently been creeping over this way more. Keep an eye open for them, so you can have your own night of boot scootin’ and boogying. After the Honkytonk Medics I zoomed down the street to Double K for Relentless. Relentless is a classic/modern rock band playing all of your favorite rock songs from yesterday and today. I only got there for the tail end of their show, but I was told they had the dance floor hopping earlier in the night. People still claim that Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest party night of the year, but to me it continued on page 8....

OUT & ABOUT continued... seems like more and more people aren’t staying out as late and are getting home and getting ready to spend some much needed time with their family. After eating entirely too much food, and then shopping my feet off for Black Friday, I wound up rockin’ the night away at the WTPA Birthday Bash with Mom and about 1,000 other friends! I’m so glad Mom finally got out for a night with me to enjoy the music that she has supported for so many years. The Annual Birthday Bash featuring Kix as the headliner is definitely a well-oiled machine. John Harris has organized it and promoted it every year and it was cool to see so many people enjoying amazing music without having any major issues. The VIP area was a little bit bigger which gave us plenty of room to move,

you also had your own bar in the VIP area and there was a side door open with easy access to the rest rooms, maybe next year the VIP should have their own porta potty lol.. Women’s bathroom lines are always crazy no matter where you go, and all the bands were so good you didn’t want to miss any of them. Leadfoot kicked off the night. It’s been a while since I saw these guys and they definitely got the party started on the right track! Their energy is contagious and they quickly got the crowd involved, jumping and rockin’ along! I really need to get out and see a longer show with them soon! Next up was Grumpy Old Men. I’ve heard a lot about these guys and I’m glad I finally got the chance to see them. They have a great sound, and a majority of the crowd were bopping along to a few of their songs. You can tell they are all seasoned musicians that know how to play, and they were a pleasure to listen to. The last opener of the night was Steel. We all know how much I love these guys.. it was awesome to see them opening for Kix. They’ve been there as fans supporting this show for years, it was great to see them finally get their chance to shine. They fired the crowd right back up again! I’m so glad they stuck to their usual and ended their set with “Hallowed Be Thy Name”. My friend Terri finally made it out to a show and a little head bangin was just what we needed! Last but not least the headliners, Kix took the stage. It is so hard to believe Steve Whiteman is 62 years old! That man is in amazing shape and has one heck of a stage show! I know there were a lot of relieved fans when we saw Ronnie back on the stage and sounding as good as usual if not even better. With a sold out crowd the band was definitely pumped up and loving every minute of it. They played a lot of their older stuff, but also some newer songs from their ”Rock Your Face Off” album. It was definitely a great night of music from start to finish! I can’t wait til next year!! On a side note part of the reason we were all there was to celebrate 92.1 WTPA’s 37th Birthday. Unfortunately we had a sad part of the night when we were told that

Nothing has been officially announced yet, but chances are WTPA is going to once again have to find a new home. Keep your ear out on the air waves and support this station as much as you possibly can. If you feel it in your heart write a letter to the FCC and let them know how amazing WTPA is and fight for their right to keep the party going another 37 years! The crazy night still wasn’t over, we made one more stop out at Chick’s in Hummelstown for Frayed Nott. It’s been so long since I crossed paths with these guys, so long

OUT & ABOUT continued... in fact that they have a new member. Welcome to Starla! Starla helps out singing lead vocals which helps add even more songs to their set list with a female vocalist. She also does an amazing job blending in harmonies, tambourine and any other percussion she can mix in. The guys were their regular rockin’ selves entertaining the locals and having a good night. After having many conversations with Dave over the phone it was cool finally getting to introduce him and Mom in person. Another nice surprise was seeing Jim and Karen from the Double K at Chick’s, yet again another long-time supporter of the magazine that Mom never got the chance to officially meet. Double K was closed because of it being a holiday weekend, so they took advantage of having the night off to come out and support music in another way.. as patrons! After being good with family over the Thanksgiving holiday it felt good to let loose and get a little “Notty!” You can check out Frayed Nott’s ad in this issue and see where they will be rockin’ next! Double K also has a great line-up this month. Check out their ad in this issue too and get out there and be patrons at their bar. Yet another side-note.. If you happen to go to Double K and you see a sign out front that says “No Colors”… please don’t be offended. It doesn’t say “coloreds” .. this is 2017.. OUT & ABOUT continued... is welcome.. and EVERYONE gets treated like family. Unfortunately, some person that’s not from this area saw that sign and posted some nasty things online about the Double K. I know it’s all “freedom of speech”.. but it’s just sad to see such a cool place get so slandered when it’s totally not deserved. Double K loves all the little adults… Red or Yellow, Black, or White, stop on in and have a bite.. and stick around for the live music and maybe even some ice cold beer! I was finally in town and able to finish off the holiday weekend at 97.3’s Toys for Tots event. This is the 9th Annual Event and the first one I was able to go see and I’m so glad I did. What an amazing evening of music at Joe K’s. It all kicked off with the April Skies. I haven’t seen these guys in many years! I know they’ve undergone some line up changes many moons/years ago, but it was my first time seeing Kemper as their lead vocalist. I simply love his voice and his stage performance. He’s an amazing entertainer and so much fun to watch. He was on and off the stage and walking around as much as he possibly could with his wired mic. Jake still does his fair share of singing and it also a great vocalist, and all of them are absolutely amazing musicians, so it was a great start to a great night of music. I got there a little late, so I missed the first half of their set, but I’m so glad I didn’t miss it completely. Next up were the Jellybricks. Another super talented band. Their shows are few and far between, but they keep releasing music, so keep an ear and an eye out for these guys and catch them when you can, you won’t be disappointed. Their harmonies are crazy cool and fun to listen to. They have played at all 9 years of this event. Their support for this great cause is amazing, just like their music! Next up the Luv Gods took the stage. They’ve also undergone some changes since I’ve seen them too, (again I’ve led a sheltered life this year and obviously didn’t get out much…) Dave Heisey, on bass, brings some new wild energy to the band that I haven’t seen for a few years. I have to admit between him on lead vocals and Len Lechene’s craziness on the drums it sort of makes your head spin around! They still have their three solid pieces to the Luv Gods, Shea and Sal, playing guitar and singing their hearts out, and Mark still playing away on the keys! Shea was also aware of a secret weapon in the room, he brought up Glenn Hamilton, the Program Director and a morning host on The River, 97.3, to sing “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen. He killed it and he only needed a little help from Google to get it done! It was great hearing them again. Hopefully it won’t be so long til the next time. The last band of the night was Shea Quinn’s latest project The Band Who Sold the World, a David Bowie tribute band. I never realized there are so many David Bowie songs I liked, but no wonder they can make a whole set just singing David Bowie. Talk about even more amazing musicians. I know the bass player was Scott Frange, owner and operator of the Player’s Exchange in Lemoyne. He’s been talking about this band for quite a few years now and I’m glad I got the chance to catch them. Wow! What a night of music. Thanks for the amazing line up 97.3. You did an amazing job hosting the night, and Ritt once again did a marvelous job keeping things moving and sounding great behind the sound board. Oh look another side note… Thoughts and good healing vibes go out to Deuce from the Martini Bros. They were supposed to be part of this show, but word in the club was that Deuce had some kind of bike accident pedal or motor I’m not sure, but unfortunately however he crashed, he messed up his shoulder and was home recovering. I’ve heard good reports about their new bass player and I was looking forward to hearing them play. Well I finally made it through all of the bands for this month! Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Last month began with a return of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! The band founded in New York City in 2000 has been on hiatus the past three years. This past October they reissued their debut album “Fever To Tell” and to celebrate they reformed for three shows in Los Angeles, Oakland and New York City. It was an absolute incredible show at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on November 7. The band killed playing hit songs “Date With The Night,” “Zero” and the famous “Maps.” With all three events selling out, one can only hope Yeah Yeah Yeahs will plan more shows! Legendary rock band Cheap Trick returned to the area for three shows within two hours of Harrisburg. The band currently touring their latest album “We’re All Alright!” which was released in June 2017. I was fortunate to catch two shows, both at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe, PA and The Queen in Wilmington, Delaware. Cheap Trick have been around 44 years and have played over 5,000 shows in their history. They still truly rock, continue to make great music and are fantastic live with memorable songs “Surrender,” “Dream Police” and “The Flame.” Cheap OUT & ABOUT continued... look at throughout the mag and plan your next night on the town! I’m so excited that Blarney’s is going to keep advertising, it’s great to have another venue listing and promoting the bands they are having for the month. Trick was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Lastly, Scottish alternative band The Jesus and Mary Chain brought their ‘The Damage and Joy Tour’ to America the past month. They were most popular in the 80’s alternative scene with their noise pop / shoegazing music full of distortion and melodies. The band still revolves around the songwriting partnership of brothers Jim and William Reid. This year they released their first studio album since 1998 titled “Damage and Joy.” The Jesus and Mary Chain have released seven records in the past 32 years and were popular on MTV’s 120 Minutes with music videos “Head On,” “Never Understand” and “Just Like Honey.” NATIONAL NEWS: Malcolm Young, the rhythm guitarist behind the hard rock band AC/DC who helped create such anthems as “Highway to Hell,” ‘‘Hells Bells” and “Back in Black,” died on November 18. He was 64. Young had been suffering from Dementia for several

When Malcolm was diagnosed in 2014, his brother Angus said of his older brother’s dementia, “Malcolm is doing fine, but that he can’t perform anymore. It was progressing further, but he knew he couldn’t do it. He had continued as long as he could, still writing. But he said to me, ‘Keep it going.’“ Halestorm will begin 2018 co-headlining a tour with Stone Sour. Halestorm’s latest tour sold an average of 1,879 tickets per show with an average gross of nearly $56,000 per concert. Rising hip hop artist Lil Peep, 21, died November 15. The rap artist was currently on tour and found unresponsive by his manager on his tour bus in Tucson, Arizona. Lil Peep’s debut LP, Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1 dropped in August, and videos for tracks including “White Wine,” “Benz Truck” and “the Way I see Things” have each racked up more than 4 million YouTube hits. No cause of death has been disclosed but Lil Peep’s social
media pages are filled with rumors of drug overdoses and his Instagram feed included drug references frequently. The Rolling Stones are still on top of the Global Concert Chart, with an average gross of $10 million per event following its “No Filter” European tour (14 stadium shows) and an average of 62,945 tickets sold per show. The top 5 include: U2 ($8.9 million), Coldplay ($5.7 million), Metallica ($4 million) and Lady Gaga ($3.4 million). Its also the first time Guns N’ Roses have been out of the top five since July but they continue to average 28,672 tickets per show, grossing $3.25 million. Roger Waters “Us + Them” Tour completed with a total of 756,189 tickets sold and grossed $92 million. After 24 years, the traveling music festival known as Vans Warped Tour will put on its final full-fledged run in 2018. Tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman provided the platform to witness the rise of pop punk with Sum 41, Simple Plan, MxPx, New Found Glory and Good Charlotte. In just six days, Taylor Swift sold more than 1.1 million copies of her new reputation album in the U.S., which was released November 11 and followed by the announcement of her “reputation Stadium Tour.” The 10time Grammy Award winner has racked up more than 482 million streams of the album. Swift’s first single from the new album, “Look What You Made Me Do,” smashed records with more than 10 million streams in one day, the most-streamed song in a one-day period ever. Swift is the only artist to have three albums sell more than 1 million copies in their first week of release. Tickets go on sale for the stadium tour on December 13, including a date in Washington DC at FedEx Field on July 10. U2 will release their new album, Songs of Experience, on December 1. The legendary Irish band is also promoting their “eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE” tour, a counterpart to the 2015 tour of “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE”, which promoted the Songs of Innocence album. U2 will visit Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on June 13 and Washington DC’s Capitol One Arena on June 17. Guitar Villa — Custom Basses made to Order Guitar Villa was established in Bethlehem, PA. in 1988 by working owner, John J. Slog, in his garage. John played bass in regional rock bands, including Gandalf, Springfield and Bye Thunder, in the mid to late 70’s and early 80’s, and also performed in his high school stage band. Music was in his blood, instruments his passion, and Customer Service became his musical calling. John always had a passion for classic and vintage instruments as he started playing and collecting rare examples of them. After leaving the performing music scene to work in a corporate lab environment, John found himself drawn back into the industry with calls from amateur and professional musicians alike with questions about vintage instruments, amplification and how to get specific sounds and tones. Many famous artists and bands, including the Lenny Kravits band visited his home, before the opening of the first store in search of recommendations on tone and instruments / amps. John’s experience and ability to extract the old school tone from vintage guitars and amps, plus the current knowledge of the state of the art amplification and set-up techniques seemed to be the cog that completed and complimented many of these artist’s style and sound. With John’s love of musical, vintage gear and having experienced some rude and not so nice music stores in New York, and other places the groundwork was laid, the inevitable was plain to see: a music store with full service, an educated musician staff, and cool products would soon become reality! John worked with Cesar Diaz, famous for his work with Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Harrison and the like, to advise and supply the hugely successful band “Live” with vintage instruments and amplification / tube preamps to achieve that much sought after “Golden Tone” that makes recordings “hits” and live performances “electric”! A trip to visit “Live”, at the world famous “Hit Factory” mega recording studio in New York City, while they were recording their hit album “Secret Samadhi”, proved to be an enlightening experience to bassist Pat Dahlheimer. John handed Pat a Demeter tube bass pre during a Sushi break from the daily rigors of the sessions. Pat called John the next day to purchase that pre and subsequently three 300 watt mono-block tube power amps. This was his new found tone! Pat used mainly vintage basses and his tone became the standard for modern rock bands of that era. The growl of the old Fender Jazz, Precision and Gibson Thunderbird basses was the backbone of the signature “Live sound” in the studio and live venues. Chad Taylor, the very talented guitar virtuoso with Live, experimented with various tube amps (including the Diaz amps) and incorporated many vintage instruments in his arsenal that included everything from a big bodied 1968 Gibson ES-175 to his favored vintage Fender Jazzmaster guitars. John personally delivered a pair of custom made silver sparkle Gibson Les Pauls and some sweet Takamine acoustics to the band for use on tour.. The word started spreading that there was some bass guy out there that knew a lot about the nuances, features and set-up techniques for old basses and amplifiers.The vast list of visitors on the phone and in person started growing and the realization that this might just be able to become a business was realized. We arrive at another holiday season, and an opportunity for life to slow down for a little while. I like to use this time of year to step back, take stock, appreciate everyone and everything that enriches my life, and recharge for the New Year. I wish everyone a pleasant and safe holiday season, including a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and peace for all, no matter what you are celebrating! I caught one last outdoor festival in late October; the third annual Akersville Fall Festival in Fulton County –

a small, friendly festival that raised funds for the town’s community church and schoolhouse. Live music was part of the three-day event. I attended on the second day, Friday, and saw a trio of musicians: singer/guitarist Wilmer Garlick, guitarists Vernon Klingerman and Colt Jenkins. These three casually performed a selection of old-timey folk, country, bluegrass and gospel, honoring audience requests along the way. Some of their song selection while I was there included Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere,” Elton Britt’s wartime hit “There’s a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere,” and gospel numbers such as “Kneel at the Cross” plus requests for “Great Speckled Bird” and “Amazing Grace/The Old Rugged Cross.” Although live music has now moved indoors for the cold weather season, it has remained busy. One recent highlight was last month’s annual Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society. Taking on a Star Wars theme, this year’s Patched Together featured a variety of children’s activities, baskets and other giveaways, check presentations, Star Wars characters, and – of course – live music. Alternating between two stages, eight bands and performers donated their talents to raise money and awareness for the Healing Patch, which provides counseling and mentoring services for young people and families that have experienced the loss of loved ones. Zach Wade & the Good Grief started the afternoon’s music on an upbeat note, performing their blend of acoustic-rooted original rock. Namesake Zach on vocals and acoustic guitar, lead guitarist Rogan Allen, bassist Devin Pierce and drummer Keegan Allen mixed tunes off their debut EP @ the Bitter End with newer song material. Set to release their second album Earthworks, the Nag Champions Mystery Band followed with their all-original set. Singer/guitarist Derek Gresh, percussionist Ed Hofer, keyboardist Tim Homerski and guest Joe Konior on bass introduced a sound that blended elements of folk, rock, blues and alternative as
they performed new songs such as “Brown River Blues,” “Leaving on the Light” and more. Longtime area musician Greg Burley next performed his acoustic set. Singing with his hearty voice, Greg blended a variety of folk, rock, pop and country numbers; including some numbers not commonly heard on area stages such as Bob Seger’s “Shame on the Moon,” the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody,” Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and Michael Murphy’s “Wildfire.” He also did numbers from John Mellencamp, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Drake White, Howie Day, Bob Dylan, Old Crow Medicine Show, Leonard Cohen and more. Playing their swan song performance, Johnstown’s Stone Bridge Blues Band made it count with an enthusiastic set of electric blues. Singer/guitarist Mike Borstnar, bassist Brian Moore, keyboardist Harold Hayford and drummer John Mundy did blues classics from Willie Dixon, Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King and more. Likewise, Patched Together also served as the final show from the next band, The Sitch, before they went on indefinite hiatus. Singer Ashley Thompson demonstrated her powerful and hearty voice, flanked by guitarist Art Martino, bassist Ryan McCracken and drummer Kevin Siegel. The Sitch fired up the dance floor with favorites from Pat Benatar, Cheap Trick, Lita Ford, Volbeat, Michael Jackson, a funky read of Deep Purple’s “Hush,” Republica, Nena, and – in tribute to Malcolm Young – a rendition of AC/ DC’s “Highway to Hell” to end their set. Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors kept the dance floor moving with their set of upbeat music, mixing songs from their self-titled album with new songs from their forthcoming second CD and select covers. Jim on guitar and lead vocals, bassist Kent Tonkin, lead guitarist Kevin McDonald, guitarist/mandolinist/harmonica player Dan Murphy, percussionist Bryan Fazio and drummer Joe Marini quickly stirred up dancing and grooving on the dance floor, and maintained that happy vibe as they did original

The Professor continued... songs plus versions of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” and a tune from Jim’s Rusted Root tenure, “Back to the Earth.” The Chrome Hearts then took the party in a country-rock direction as they mixed original songs with favorites. Singer Stephanie Onkst, singer/guitarist Bob Onkst, lead guitarist Chad Buterbaugh, bassist Brian Baum and drummer Doug Fetter triggered their own dance party with original tunes such as “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is,” “Drunkensville USA” and “We Got It All Goin’ On,” plus hits from Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Johnny Cash and more. Providing the finale was Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, who capped the benefit with their blend of original numbers and their groove-infused takes on select favorites. This year’s Patched Together was another big success, raising well over $10,000 toward the Healing Patch. Also happening at the Bavarian Aid Society last month was the third annual Park n’ Rock Benefit, which raised money for the Central Blair Recreation Commission’s programs and facilities. This year’s event followed a “Parrothead” theme, based around the night’s headliner, Pittsburgh-based Jimmy Buffett tribute Tom Watt & the Fruitcakes. “Cousin Mike” Wieland started off the evening with a selection of acoustic favorites, spanning Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel” to REO Speedwagon’s “Take It On the Run” to Toto’s “Africa” and more. Mike’s smooth voice and friendly stage personality warmed up the crowd and helped set the night’s festive tone. Tom Watt & the Fruitcakes then performed three sets, celebrating the Jimmy Buffett songbook plus other tropical and vintage rock’n’roll favorites. While folks decked out in Hawaiian shirts and Parrothead gear took to the dance floor, the group – namesake Tom “The Buffettman” on vocals and guitar, Zach Watt on lead guitar, Derrick Edwards on e-percussion, Leslie D’Angelo on congas and Adam Warble on steel drums – performed Buffett favorites such as “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” “Margaritaville” (performed twice, once early and once late ), “5 O’Clock Somewhere,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw,” “Come Monday,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and more. They also did select hits and favorites from the Eagles, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Diamond, Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks and others. The night also featured a Parrothead costume contest and tropical-themed food. Heavily attended, the Park n’Rock Benefit was a big success. “One of the best things about being a touring ukulele player is that no matter where you go, the audience has such low expectations,” joked renowned ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro when he visited State College’s State Theatre in late October. Flanked by Nolan Verner on bass and Dave Preston on guitar, Jake redefined those expectations of what can be done on a ukulele, as he performed everything from jazz to rock to classical to Hawaiian folk and more over the course of his two sets. Highlights were numerous as Jake offered insights and perspective on his array of song material. His inspiration for “Go For Broke,” for example, was the Japanese-American veterans who served during World War II, and he dedicated the song to all veterans and members of the Armed Forces. He explained that his original number “Travels” was designed around the open tuning of the ukulele, and he disclosed the classical roots of numbers such as “Tritone” and “Tokada.” Jake performed several cover songs along the way, including two of his most famous – the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” which propelled him into a viral video sensation a decade ago, and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” (the song that first made me aware of Jake and his talents); he also did renditions of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” the Zombies’ “Time of the Season” continued on next page...

Halloween season usually brings with it the annual performances of The Rocky Horror Show; and for the tenth consecutive year, State College’s Love & Light Productions presented this popular horror/sci-fi musical at the State Theatre. This year’s presentation opened with a film vignette celebrating Love & Light’s tenth anniversary of Rocky Horror, featuring comments and photos from folks who have been involved in the production over the years. The production itself was wild and lively, as the performers made full use of the State Theatre’s stage and environs with a two-tiered set-up, with the backing band – Greg Mudzinski on bass, Alex Sterbenz on guitar and Kirk Mountz on drums – playing on the upper level behind the actors and actresses. (Show narrator Joe Tombasco played piano on the left side of the lower stage level.) The Rocky Horror cast – including Daniel Skiles as Brad Majors, Haley Hendrick as Janet Weiss, Erik Hartman as
Jake Shimabukuro at The State Theatre The Professor continued... and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” What struck me the most about Jake was his fearlessness and adventurism, and an eagerness to take the ukulele to places it has not gone before. As a result, he is a modern pioneer on this instrument, and he demonstrated incredible precision, tone, detail and versatility throughout his performance. Afterward, Jake met and greeted fans, many who brought their own ukuleles to be autographed. I didn’t bring my ukulele, but purchased Jake’s instructional book and got it signed instead. This concert reignited the spark to sink more serious time into getting my own ukulele playing up to the next level.

Love & Light Productions / The Rocky Horror Show Dr. Frank N’Furter, Alicia Starr as Magenta, Allen Boyd as Riff Raff, Julia Wilson as Columbia, Clarence Miller as Rocky and Oscar Cleaver in the dual role as both Eddie and Dr. Scott – presented their freewheeling version of the now-classic story of a young engaged couple whose car breaks down near a castle on a rainy night, and the cavalcade of bizarre sci-fi experiments and sexual confusion they encounter once they enter that castle. This presentation featured plenty of unexpected twists and turns, including localized improvisations that tied in the tenth anniversary theme, embellishments on the various plot elements, and – as expected – crazy audience callbacks and ad-libs! Coupled with the strong performances of the various Rocky song ‘hits’ such as “Time Warp,” “Sweet Transvestite,” “Hot Patootie,” “The Floor Show” and more, this production of Rocky Horror provided an action-packed, exciting audiovisual spectacle. Hats off to director Rachel Moon and the entire cast for a wild, fun ride! McGarvey’s had a very busy November, hosting several noteworthy national names during the week before Thanksgiving. The Professor continued... ming punk rock, with special guests X’s For Eyes and Western Settings, plus Utters guitarist Darius Koski performing an acoustic set. Another obligation prevented me from arriving until just after the Swingin’ Utters began their set, but the group was firing up a full house with their full velocity punk rock. The roster of singer Johnny Bonnel, guitarist/singer Darius Koski, bassist Miles Peck and drummer Gary McEntee played melody-based, go-for-broke punk rock, tapping songs from throughout their 25-year career. Not familiar with their song library, I didn’t catch any song titles, but I enjoyed Swingin’ Utters’ feverish energy and enthusiasm, and their genuine appreciation for the large crowd that showed up to see them in Altoona, PA on a Tuesday night! Two nights later, 1990s hard rock hitmakers Sponge arrived on McGarvey’s stage in front of another large crowd. Openers Zach Wade & the Good Grief came on strong and fired up the crowd, mixing older and newer originals with a couple of select cover songs, Gin Blossoms’ “Hey Jealousy” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” The group’s mix of melody and grooves generated more cheers as their set progressed, setting the table for the headliners. From Detroit, Sponge was then greeted with a fired-up house as they launched into one of their 1990s rock radio and MTV staples, “Wax Ecstatic,” to open their set, immediately following with another hit, “Molly (16 Candles).” Obviously elated with the big turnout and enthusiastic response, singer Vinnie Dombroski happily remarked that the crowd was acting like they were waiting 25 years for this show. He and the rest of Sponge – guitarists Andy Palatan and Kyle Neely, bassist Tim Palatan and drummer Billy Adams – then continued their set, emphasizing material from their first two albums, Rotting Pinata and Wax Ecstatic, along with a few newer songs and tunes off their latest CD, The Beer Sessions. They did songs from Rotting Pinata such as the title track, “Neenah Manasha,” “Pennywheels,” “Drownin’” and “Rainin,’” and from Wax Ecstatic they performed “Have You Seen Mary” and “Silence is Their Drug.” Sponge also pulled out “Glue” from their 2005 album The Man (with Vinnie initiating audience response by repeatedly asking the lyrical line “Is everybody losing their minds?”), and they did a pair of songs from the new Beer Sessions album, “Jump While the House Is On Fire” and “The Whores Are Closing In.” Vinnie addressed and kept the crowd engaged throughout, and his voice was in great form; the group’s instrumental execution was tight and fiery. The set rode on an energetic high throughout, culminating in an extended version of the much-anticipated final song, the radio hit “Plowed,” with Vinnie stepping into the crowd to lead a slow-motion callback of the song’s chorus to cap the night. Two nights later, McGarvey’s hosted Bobaflex and Silvertung, along with the annual visit of former VH1 Classic That Metal Show host and comedian Don Jamieson as show emcee. Rebooted after a few years away from the area music scene, Altoona’s The Opposition opened the night to re-introduce their blend of funk, metal, punk
and hip-hop. Although I missed their set due to Patched Together-hosting duties, The Opposition’s new incarnation includes Mike “Iceman” Bryant on vocals, Phil Wagner, Rich Johnson and Jody Earnest on guitars, Mike Stanley on bass and Dave Russell on drums. Host Don Jamieson brought laughter in between band sets with his brand of rock music-rooted stand-up humor, sharing stories referencing Kiefer Sutherland, Johnny Depp and more. Baltimore’s Silvertung then performed their brand of blistering, modern hard rock/metal. This group has a new bass player since the last time they performed at McGarvey’s in August, as TC replaces Skoot. Singer Speed, guitarist Codey Red, TC and drummer Danno hammered out hard rocking assaults such as “Coming Alive,” “Justify” and “Devil’s Advocate,” as well as the new single “Dig,” their radio single “Never Too Late” and more. Silvertung’s blend of melody and tenacity generated a lot of excitement with the crowd, and this group’s Altoona fan base is steadily growing. West Virginia’s Bobaflex then slammed the lid on the night with their powerful set.

The Professor continued... ley, bassist Jymmy Tolland and drummer Tommy Johnson did numbers such as “Mama (Don’t Take My Drugs Away),” “Say What You Will,” “Bad Man,” their single “Long Time Coming,” their update of Pink Floyd’s “Hey You,” “Bury Me with My Guns” and more. Bobaflex maintained a high energy level during the entire set, and kept the crowd’s attention. I saw a number of other performances at McGarvey’s in recent weeks as well, including last month’s triple-bill headlined by Small Town Horror Show. Making their first McGarvey’s appearance, northern Cambria County rockers Negan kicked the show off with their strong set of current and ‘90s rock and metal favorites. The group introduced a new guitar player this night, Jeremy Ashhurst, who replaces Tim Homerski. One thing I enjoy about Negan is that they tackle different songs that don’t get covered much or at all on area stages – case in point this night was Silverchair’s “Israel’s Son!” Pittsburgh’s The Filthy Lowdown then stormed the stage with their high-velocity brand of thrashing punk rock. These guys let fly with total reckless abandon, as frontman Abe Like Lincoln wrapped his mic cord around his face and the rest of the group fired at a feverish pace on whiplash-inducing original song assaults. Then, utilizing a video screen backdrop, Small Town Horror Show closed the show with their brand of zombie groove metal, mixing tunes from their The Dead Didn’t Die CD with new songs from their forthcoming second album. Their rapid fire pace and intensity kept folks cheering until the end. Other performances I saw at McGarvey’s included Pittsburgh’s Children of October as they headlined a triple-bill that included Dave Hates Everything and Scratch n’Sniffs. Comprised of singer/guitarist Timmy Gibson, drummer Rick O Mortis and on-loan bassist Jason from The Jasons, Children of October rendered horror-themed manic punk, thrash and metal original songs, including tunes from their latest EP, You Mean It’s Not Jazz. Among their songs were titles such as “I Wanna Be Your Sin,” “The Jersey Devil,” “One Bite Together” and “I Want to Rip Your Guts Out Through Your Mouth.” On the milder side, the group did a torrid take on Dion’s early rock’n’roll hit “Runaround Sue”…I also caught The Crew Of The Half Moon’s November visit; I end up amazed every time I see this Johnstown trio, who show me a new fold or layer with each show. Katie Rhodes and Dan Oatman switched between various instruments and singing duties, with Jon Beard providing the constant on drums. Highlights included at least one new original song that will be on the group’s next album, as well as their versions of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” David Bowie’s “The Man They Sold the World,” their powerful take on Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love,” plus strong original songs like the dark-toned “U-235” and the lengthier “Stark Lost Lovers,” merging an indie-rock vibe with hints of Led Zeppelin III… I also witnessed Black Sun as they capped a late October triple-bill also featuring Fyre and Echoes Never Lie. Black Sun sounded powerful on their improvisational brand of doom metal. Instrumentally these guys were intense as always, with Jason Feathers scorching the cosmos with his fierce and furious guitar solo work, launching off the thunderous foundations laid down by drummer Nate Woods and bassist David Mollica. Todd McKeone’s lead howls become more feral with each show; he unleashed unbridled vocal ferocity this night…And I also got to see Halloween weekend performances of both Nobody’s Heroes and Zach Wade & the Good Grief at McGarvey’s as well. I checked out some new bands in recent weeks, including State College’s DopplerPoppins last month as they played at Zeno’s. Guitarist Tucker Landis (also of Shallow 9 fame), keyboardist Sam Lapp, bassist Jon Keller and drummer Matt Price cranked up some dance-inducing grooves that pulled folks onto the dance floor area in front 18
of the stage. They split between instrumental and vocal numbers, with lead singer Tyler Ringland stepping up to deliver some soulful voice several times during each set. DopplerPoppins mixed original compositions and select covers through the course of the night. It was exhilarating to hear the interaction and improvisation between these musicians, with Tucker delivering clean, precise guitar solo displays and Sam creating innovative keyboard solos and fills, including classical and jazz flavors. Beyond the instrumental fireworks, other highlights included versions of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon,” a fiery take on the Doors’ “L.A. Woman,” Pink Floyd’s “Money” (referencing DopplerPoppins’ recent performance of the entire Dark Side of the Moon, also at Zeno’s), and the lid-slamming finale rendition of the Commodores’ “Brick House,” highlighted by guest Olivia Jones’ passionate wail. DopplerPoppins performs every Thursday night at Zeno’s through fall semester, with The Tommy Roberts opening. Another new band I saw was Johnstown’s 2’Shea early last month at the Windber Hotel in Windber. The group’s name (pronounced like ‘touche’) actually comes from two band members with the last name of O’Shea, the brother/sister tandem of Billy O’Shea on guitar and Andrea O’Shea on lead vocals. Providing the rhythm section are Bruce Siwy and Matt Birk on bass and drums respectively. Making their Windber Hotel debut, 2’Shea fired off an eclectic mixture of classic rock favorites. Their last set opened with a fiery read on Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” They broke out the funky rock pairing of Dr. John’s “Right Place Wrong Time” into the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” and 2’Shea also did tunes from Cream, Pat Benatar, a tribute to Tom Petty and more. Andrea displayed a hearty and powerful voice up front, and Billy clearly knew his way around the guitar strings. The icing on the cake for me, though, was the night-ending Pink Floyd double-shot, as “Comfortably Numb” led into “Any Colour You Like” – I don’t think I have ever seen an area band tackle this unsung Floyd classic before! I caught up with Rokkandy last month as they entertained at the newly-opened Dog House in Bellwood. With Randy Servello filling in behind the drum kit this night, Rokkandy sounded strong as they mixed a variety of rock, pop and country favorites. Pat McConnell on vocals and keys, Bob DeArmitt on vocals and guitar, Kelly Montgomery on bass and Randy stirred up cheers and dance floor activity with tunes from 4 Non Blondes, Wild Cherry, Green Day, Doors, ZZ Top, Pat Benatar, AC/DC, Neil Young, Proclaimers and more. Kelly got loose a few times, doing his version of a walk from the Monty Python “Ministry of Silly Walks” catalog during the Proclaimers’ “(I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles,” and spinning on his back with his bass on the floor toward night’s end. Rokkandy maintains a busy performance schedule around the area; catch their party (with regularly-scheduled drummer Doug) at a venue in your neighborhood soon. The Flight 19 “Party Plane” continues its charter service to area live music stages, and I caught the group’s arrival on the stage of Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge in

late October. Singer Brian Thomas, guitarist/singer Rogan Allen, bassist/singer Mark Triforo, keyboardist/singer Phil Steele and drummer Paul Caracciolo II kept the Dees’ dance floor busy and occupied with their uptempo mixture of new and classic rock, pop and dance favorites. Medleys are commonplace during Flight 19’s performance, and this night featured one medley that began with INXS and ended with Love and Theft’s “Girls Love to Shake It,” while another fused together funk, disco and hip-hop classics from K.C. & the Sunshine Band, the Commodores, the Temptations, Salt’n’Pepa, Tone Loc and Chic. The group sans Paul shared singing duties throughout the night, and maintained a tight, energetic pace from start to end. Flight 19’s “Party Plane” touches down throughout the region; they return to the Four Dees on Dec. 16. And Felix & the Hurricanes close out weekends every Sunday night at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. Every Hurricanes show offers something different; on the night I attended last month, Pat McGinnis was filling in on bass alongside namesake, singer and guitar man Felix Kos and drummer Bobby Watters. Felix was in an adventurous mood this night, and several times launched his guitar into space-rock territory with cosmic distortion and feedback displays to end songs like George Thorogood’s “Bad to the Bone” and CCR’s “Suzie Q.” The Hurricanes have accumulated a vast library of song material and can change up the musical menu each night; this night included songs from the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stealers Wheel, Delbert McClinton, Pink Floyd – and by request, the ever-popular “Rocky Top!” See what musical storm Felix & the Hurricanes whip up on any given Sunday night at the Black & Gold Tavern, and other numerous locations throughout the region. News and notes…Former NBC-TV The Voice finalist Josh Gallagher is among performers appearing on a new holiday compilation CD showcasing the Johnstown music scene; organized by Bo Moore, the CD, A Johnstown Christmas, features 16 songs from a variety of Johnstown area musicians, with sale proceeds helping out the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat newspaper’s Santa Fund, which provides toys for area children ages 12 and under from families who are facing financial hardships (see the review of this CD elsewhere in this issue)…Jeffrey Gaines will release a brand new album in January; the ten-song album, called Alright, comes out Jan. 26 on Omnivore Records…Sterling Koch has introduced a new band project, Sterling Koch & Freeway Jam, and they will perform an instrumental blend of jazz, funk, rock and blues. Sterling has issued his new modern R&B-toned CD, called GuitaR & B…The second Punx For Pets fundraiser for the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society happens Dec. 2 at The Anvil in Altoona, and will feature performances from Samara, Dave Hates Everything, Deadside, Off the Top Rope, Such Fools and more. BO MOORE & FRIENDS – A JOHNSTOWN CHRISTMAS (no label) Arriving in time for the 2017 holiday season is A Johnstown Christmas, a 16-track compilation CD featuring Johnstown and Cambria County area musicians performing original holiday compositions and their distinctive versions of time-tested holiday classics. Organized by longtime Johnstown musician and personality Bo Moore, the album features a wide variety of musical flavors, and blends newly-recorded songs (mostly recorded and engineered by Johnny Bayush) with previously-recorded material. Proceeds from the CD’s sales benefit the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat newspaper’s Santa Fund, which helps out needy area children and their families during the holiday season. One of this album’s major highlights is a contribution by former NBC-TV The Voice finalist Josh Gallagher, who eagerly donated his pleasant, folksy rendition of “Silent Night,” which he recently recorded in Nashville. “Silent Night” actually makes two appearances here, as Black Cat Moan offers their unique acoustic blues variation on the holiday classic as well. The Moore Brothers rock and roll with the pleasantly reminiscent “Christmas Time in Johnstown,” complete with a tonguein-cheek cameo appearance from popular, recently-retired WJAC-TV newsman Marty Radovanic. Also providing a rock’n’roll flavor is Mutual Fun Society with their upbeat musical instruction guide “How to Build a Snowman.” Making another joyous, vibrant sound here is the combo of Johnny Bayush, Rachel Allen, Brandon King, Jessica King and Darlene Seals with their charged gospel/funk number “Jesus, the Light of the World.” Jazz In Your Face offers their bold and brassy 2005 recording of “My Favorite Things,” highlighted by feisty trumpet solo work from the late Larry McGiboney. Adam Mundok and Adam Milkovich’s collaboration, AM2, conjures a playful Andrews Sisters-like vocal arrangement on “Cozy Christmas.” On the more reverent side, Denise Baldwin applies her soaring, potent voice on “His Holy Light,” the duo of Walt (Churchey) & Jackie (Kopco-Shawley) remind listeners to slow down and savor the season on their 2012 number “Take Time,” and with his resonant voice, Michael Facciani relates a heartfelt Christmas remembrance on “The Christmas Road.” Revered longtime Johnstown performers Frank Filia and John Pencola contribute a stripped-down piano rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” and Sam Coco recounts Christmas memories with “Windows in the City.” Besides the aforementioned Moore Brothers track, Bo Moore also performs with musical friends on a version of “Little Drummer Boy,” and strums ukulele alongside Rachel Allen on “Winter Lullaby.” The Divided Self shares a thoughtful Christmas season reflection on “A Very Merry Christmas,” while George Lucas croons the country-toned “Anything But Christmas.” These performances are sincere, and listeners can sense the performers’ personal investments into these creations. The album’s organization allows these numbers to flow together smoothly, making for a rewarding, complete listen. With its heartfelt performances and descriptive word paintings, A Johnstown Christmas can be likened to a musical picture postcard set of Johnstown Christmas memories, and as such, presents a joyful, heart-touching listen. MATT OTIS & THE SOUND – SO IT GOES… (no label) Through his musical output so far – both as a solo performer and with his current group, The Sound – Matt Otis has established himself as a thoughtful and thought-provoking songwriter who likes to explore the nooks and crannies of the human experience and psyche. His latest album with The Sound, So It Goes…, continues that exploration lyrically, thematically and musically. The album rides a loose theme of humanity in the fast-paced technology age, and how modern society is losing touch with its humanity as it becomes more immersed in technology, especially digital communication. Along with Kent Tonkin on bass, Charlie McClanahan on drums and percussion, Harry Pepper on djembe and Alyssa Smith on vocals, Matt explores new musical terrain as well, stretching from his established folk rock/pop foundation to embrace elements of electronica, synth-pop, ambient music and more. The opening number, “Blinds,” asks if our hectic existence has diminished our ability to be compassionate, feeling human beings; a theme also shared on the somber acoustic number “You Ain’t Got No Love.” The upbeat “Frozen Moments” examines our obsession with cell phones and social media, observing that we are often more concerned with capturing a moment in a cell phone photo or video rather than actually living in that moment as it happens. Likewise, “Give Me Something Real” prefers disconnecting from the grid to enjoy the reality of the here and now. Matt also considers the collateral damage of our partisan political age, as the gentle acoustic title track “So It Goes…” questions how much our obsession with politics has divided us and derailed our compassion for one another. Electronica becomes the vehicle to suggest unplugging and escaping from the grid on “Sea of Green,” while the soulful “Melancholia” ultimately suggests we enjoy life and its moments while we can, because tomorrow is never guaranteed. All ten melodies connect in distinctive ways, and Matt’s variety of musical flavors keeps this album interesting from start to end. Recorded, mixed and produced by Michael Ofca at Innovation Studios in Steubenville, Ohio, So It Goes… sounds crisp and detailed, with new nuances shining through with each repeated listen. So It Goes… is the most ambitious and thought-provoking set so far from Matt Otis, as he and the Sound provide compelling questions to encourage listeners to examine their own present-day realities. GENE THE WEREWOLF – THE LONER (no label) Pittsburgh’s Gene the Werewolf has been cranking out howl-icious rock and roll on western PA stages and beyond since 2007, and packs hard-rocking punch on their latest CD, The Loner. Gene the Werewolf’s style and sound are unapologetically rooted in rowdy classic hard guitar rock of the 1970s and 80s, with the bad boy rock of AC/DC, Guns’n’Roses, Poison and the Rolling Stones all coming to mind over the disc’s ten tracks. Group namesake Gene belts out a gritty howl up front with ample power and range while playing guitar and keys; flanked by guitarist Drew Donegan, bassist Tim Schultz, drummer Nick Reval and keyboard player Aaron Mediate. The Loner struts and swaggers from the get-go and never lets up. The opening salvo, the zombie apocalypse-themed “Walking Dead,” features guest guitar work from PittsPennsylvania Musician Magazine

ANATOMY OF THE SACRED – ASHES TO ASHES (no label) Anatomy of the Sacred’s story began in 2011, when multi-instrumentalist Shane Krout began to collaborate with singer Brenda Michelle Robinson toward his symphonic metal-geared project. Anatomy of the Sacred’s debut recording, Ashes to Ashes, introduces a lavish, multi-dimensional style and sound that blends classic-styled progressive hard rock and metal with classical song structures and operatic vocals. The group channels modern influences such as Tran-Siberian Orchestra and Evanescence, but also recalls the medieval vibe of Renaissance and the classic rock firepower of peak-era Heart. Brenda’s voice provides an immediate focal point, as she displays potent vocal range, power and clarity. Handling bass, rhythm
and lead guitars, keys and programming, Shane provides much of the deep and dramatic instrumental backdrop for Brenda to launch her vocal acrobatics. The songs explore human themes of love, hate, death, fear, hope and more. The explosive disc-opener “Narcissi” explores self-obsession at the expense of love, while Brenda yearns for a positive outcome on the operatic “Hope Holds On.” Anatomy of the Scared sets an ethereal tone with the darker “Just One Night,” while guest vocalist Clinton Washington sees hope slip away on the somber piano ballad “Farewell to the Light” to close the set. The melodies are detailed but alluring, and draw and hold attention. The combination of Brenda’s siren-like voice and Shane’s layered arrangements give these songs a deep, haunting presence. The sound quality is deep, full and majestic. Ashes to Ashes provides an impressive opening chapter into the sophisticated musical world of Anatomy of the Sacred, and fans of orchestral-flavored, adventurous hard rock will find this well worth exploring.
