ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll

February - Millennium Music Conference month. It’s hard to believe that this is the 22nd year of the conference. Once again many musicians will gather together to network and learn and share their talent with Pennsylvania residents. It is always a fun and crazy weekend as we travel from one venue to another striving to see as many bands and musicians as possible. One way to make sure that we hear your music is to stop by our Open Mic stage from 11am to 5pm. Over the years I know those performances have persuaded my writers to go to the showcase later that weekend. Whenever these conferences are held it never ceases to amaze me of all the work that goes into it to make it all come together. All the sound people, the waiters and waitress, the club owners that support the conference by allowing the bands to perform. It’s going to be a crazy fun weekend and if you didn’t do something for your honey for valentine’s day you can at least come out to a venue and enjoy some great music. Most places don’t have a cover charge, a few do, but it’s a great cabin reliever time

of year. Rachel, my beautiful daughter took the cover shot of Amanda and the Noise. She did a most excellent job. I guess taking sports pictures of kids is paying off. I don’t know what I would do without my Rachel. She does a lot to keep the magazine going. My mind is drawing a blank as to what to write, there’s so many things I would like to say but it’s best at times not to say anything at all. As usual there are a lot of schedules and music to enjoy this month. Jerryoke is happening at Double K Tavern on Friday nights, that’s quickly becoming the hot ticket on the east shore. If you like to sing stop by on a Friday and strut your stuff. One never knows who is in the audience, Cliff’s Tavern is working frantically to get their doors opened for the Grand Opening on February 10th with Pentagon beginning the start of live music. Cliff’s was formerly Gullifty’s and is located in Camp Hill. The new owners are busy remodeling and getting it up to code. It’s going to be a great place to once again enjoy live music. February 23rd is Kate Greene’s birthday, it’s hard to believe that she will be 18 and next year go to college! Hopefully she’ll go to Susquehanna University and won’t be far from me. If you get out to the MMC be sure to stop by our table and chat. God Bless You and Keep You, may His face shine upon you and give you peace. Love you Whitey!!

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks

The February Millennium Music Conference Issue!!! WHOOHOO!! Let’s get the party started already!! Once again, I’m very excited to hang out with everyone at the 22nd Annual MMC and fill my ears with amazing music from beginning to end! This year there is a new host hotel, the Park Inn in Mechanicsburg, I hope they are ready for us!!! I will write more about the MMC later, but first let me get started on all of the amazingness I already heard and saw this past month. It all started with a trip out to Double K for Saddle Horn. I never saw these guys before, and I was happy to see a new local country band making its mark on the area. When I arrived I saw a familiar face, Cheryl, from my class in High School. It’s pretty crazy to see someone I haven’t seen in over 20 years at the Double K of all places. Steve Clouser did a great job on vocals,

belting out all of your country favorites. It turns out his guitar player John Dubaich, is also my old science teacher’s husband. Then there was Ben Musser, the local mail delivery guy for Liverpool where I grew up, and last but not least Steven “Duece” Trautwein on drums, surprisingly enough I didn’t know him from my past.. Overall they were great musicians that pulled in a decent crowd especially with all of the freezing temps and crazy weather we’ve been having. They had a saddle for you to ride on, and pose for pictures, of course there were a couple of crazy cowboys/girls in the crowd who had to give that a try! Overall it was a fun and crazy night, but isn’t every night at Double K!?! Next up I took a trip downtown to HMAC in Harrisburg for the Bee Gees metal tribute band, Tragedy out of New York. VoidHidden was asked to open earlier in the week and they jumped on the opportunity. They did a great job getting the show started and getting the crowd ready for a great night of music. Their energy was contagious and their music rocked you to the core! I usually cross paths with these guys at the MMC, some of them have even stopped by our Open Mic stage, hopefully I’ll see them again this year. I love seeing local bands take advantage of everything the MMC has to offer.

5401 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 717.697.0321 • Open 4pm-2am Fri. 02/02 - GARRETT

SHULTZ BAND Sat. 02/03 - ADRIAN BLITZER Fri. 02/09 - STONEWOOD Sat. 02/10 - DOC MARTEN & THE FLANNELS doc marten & the flannels Fri. 02/16 - CHRIS WOODWARD & SHINDIGGIN Sat. 02/17 - EMILY’S TOYBOX

Next up was Tragedy —an all metal tribute to the Bee Gees and Beyond.. Yes, that’s right METAL. “It’s Raining Men” will never be the same, plus many other songs like “Sweet Caroline” or there was that medley by KC/DC & the Sunshine Band, that literally almost had me standing there with my jaw hanging open listening to and watching these guys perform. Not only was every song hilarious and a shocker in themselves, but their outfits, their overall demeanor, and their antics on the stage were so entertaining! Aaron Zimmerman from Steel was with me, and I said those outfits are just what Steel needs!! Thank goodness their instruments were hanging in all the right places! Between songs it was like a broadway play, they had Lance taking care of all of their needs and adding to the show in every unimaginable way possible! Not only were they amazing visual entertainment, but their music itself, the way they tweaked the songs to better suit their needs, and all of their different medleys of so many artists and styles of music, not only was their set well written, but they were all top notch musicians! I’m sure they were bummed about the turn out of this show, but hopefully if they get them back with some more promotion, more people will come in and be as entertained as we were. After a little chat with John Trainor of HMAC I heard about some amazing renovations that are in the works at HMAC. With already having the Stage on Herr, The Kitchen/Gallery stage,

Out & About continued and the huge Capitol Room, they already have a pretty amazing set-up, it will be awesome for the Harrisburg area if they make it even bigger. It’s definitely a great place to go listen to a band. Keep an eye out for all of the exciting changes coming soon. Next up was a trip out to the Winner’s Circle for the Anthony K Band. Anthony K is a Nashville recording artist that came up here to PA to entertain all of the country line dancers at the Winner’s Circle for four days. Just like the other big country acts he only travels with his regular bass player, so he hires some other local musicians to play with him. The night I was there Darrell Adams was on guitar and Scott Powell from Laredo was behind the drums. You might’ve heard Anthony K’s song, “Marry Me” on Bob 94.9 or any of your other favorite country stations. The band did a great job at keeping the line dancers on the dance floor and the crowd entertained. Anthony K will be back at the Winner’s Circle February 14th thru the 17th. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay for long, I still wanted to make it to the Blue Moose for Hot Like Molly. When I arrived at The Blue Moose the Purple Shooters were flying and everyone was having a good time dancing along with Hot Like Molly. Jamie Kay’s voice definitely grabs your attention as soon as you hear her. She’s also backed with some amazing musicians that help make their show the complete package! They are a band that truly does play some songs you don’t hear every other band play. They cover over 4 decades of music, so they obviously have plenty of songs to choose from. I’ve seen them a couple times now, and every time their set list is completely different. They have quite the repertoire of songs, which makes them even more entertaining! With a female lead singer, but also plenty of guys that can also sing lead and back her up, it helps make their set list even more diverse! Hopefully our paths will cross again soon! Believe it or not I snuck off this month and went to the beach for the day.. it was heavenly! On my drive back my friend Terri called and wanted me to go along to go see The Famous at Joe K’s. That worked for me because my friend Amy Leeser was also there celebrating her birthday. As usual The Famous had an amazing, standing room only crowd at Joe K’s. The talent from all of the musicians in The Famous is amazing, so it’s always a great show! I appreciated the shout out from Joey right before their Journey song. There is no denying how much I love Journey!! Thanks Joey! The Famous continues to get more famous with every show. The really cool part is their fans can get Famous too! Who doesn’t like to be famous!!! So don’t wait any longer, keep an eye on these guys and gal and get out there and get famous with them!! My next trip was across the river to Johnny Joe’s for The Blues Vultures. In case you don’t already know, the lead guitar player of this band is Ronnie Younkins, also the lead guitar player of Kix. I never knew he was such a great singer! Dylan Howes, on bass and vocals was a crazy good vocalist too, and that guy can lay down some serious bass lines. It was nice to see my good friend Ed Piccolo switching off drum duties with Tommy Carr. Most of the songs I heard were just good solid rock and roll, but they did throw in a good blues song here and there too. These guys are from down in Maryland, but are working their way up into the Harrisburg area more and more, I sure hope to see them again soon! Closing out the night was Nothingmen. Yes, I finally made it to a show!! They’ve been playing lots of local stages all throughout Harrisburg and beyond for over two years now, but they were that elusive band that I just kept missing by mere minutes! I knew they’d be good just because of the caliber of musicians that are in this band. I’ve seen them performing in other bands, but as Nothingmen they are amazing! They play a great mix of covers and sneak in their originals too. I love the line in their biography, “Arby’s has the meats, Nothingmen has the beats.” I would say they have the beats, the meats, and all the treats, with so many quality musicians, the sound from the stage is full and flavorable! I’m glad I finally caught these guys Out & About, now I just wish they would advertise so I can have a better chance of catching them again! Last but not least is a long time, faithful advertiser, Smokin Gunnz at another faithful advertiser, Double K. The PA Musician survives solely on our advertisers, so to each and every one of you.. Thank you!!! Smokin Gunnz hasn’t been at Double K for a while, so everyone was out in full force ready to support them. I got there at almost the end of the night and it was still crowded, and I heard it was even crazier earlier! It’s awesome to see how Zach has fit right in to the flow of the band. It was a bit continued on page 12....

Out & About continued strange seeing Mike on the left side of the stage, but he can rock from anywhere! Overall as usual it was a great night of music and a great way to end the month of rock n’ roll! I wanted to throw a special shout out to Bube’s Brewery in Mt. Joy for allowing me to take the cover pictures and do the interview with Amanda and THE NOISE in the Catacombs of their establishment. We really had a blast and the pictures turned out great! For those of you that don’t know, you can go there and eat upstairs (because it’s cheaper and delicious) I suggest the bacon infused cheddar popcorn, then you can get a tour of the catacombs. The catacombs are part of the underground railroad, and they are also how the brewery stayed in business during the prohibition. There is lots of history in that establishment, it’s really not that far off of 283, halfway between Harrisburg and Lancaster. If you are looking for a fun date night, I highly suggest it! Thanks again Bubes for letting us hang out and be so accommodating to us! You can check out the interview with Amanda and THE NOISE in this issue, and check out that amazing picture on the cover!

Ronnie Younkins photo by Rachel Rocks Finally, time to chat about the MMC!!!! First things first, pay the extra bucks and stay at the host hotel, the Park Inn. If it snows or any other craziness, we are all safe and nestled in the hotel, and the party still continues, trust me, that has happened, but also it’s nice to be able to just roll out of bed and walk down in time for the panels, mentoring, and of course our Open Mic!! Everything is first come first served at the Open Mic stage so get there and sign up, don’t be too hungover Friday morning, trust me you will regret it! The Millennium Music Conference is taking place starting Thursday evening, February 22nd thru technically Sunday morning the 25th, at the Park Inn on the Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg. It’s the same place where Blarney’s/WS Hardware Bar/(people still refer to it as Wanda’s), or whatever you want to call it. Of course I’m once again looking forward to the annual bag stuffing! It will start hopefully by 5pm. We all get to circle a big table, stuff the bags, and get to know each other, maybe start playing drinking games, eating some gummi bears, or other treats and having a good time! The more the merrier, if we get enough people it’s done in a matter of minutes, and we don’t get so dizzy circling the table. After we’re done stuffing, it’s time for the Kick-Off Party right there at Blarney’s Pub. I’ve never heard of Animal Sun, who is kicking it off at 8:30, but I’m sure they are amazing because the rest of the bands I know for a fact are! Autopilot was at the MMC last year, they come all the way down from Saskatoon, SK, which is in Canada! And are the nicest guys and amazing musicians! I can’t believe the sounds these 3 guys can create. Last year we had late night shenanigans with these guys every night, including stuffing 8 people in one Uber. Then next up is Single By Sunday, with over 24,000 likes on Facebook, and checking out their videos, trust me, you don’t want to miss them!!! Plus they are coming the whole way from Scotland! By

12

the way they are currently looking for a bass to play at their showcases if you have an extra one you want to loan them, you might want to reach out to them. Then there is Silver Screen from Johnstown, who doesn’t love some grunge music to end the night! Plus, all night long it’s fun seeing people arrive from their long journey to get there to lots of hugs and shenanigans! My favorite part about the MMC is that it is big enough that it brings in some of the top musical acts, and mentors, but also small enough that you actually get to talk to and meet those same mentors and musicians. Speaking of mentors, make sure you get to mentoring early and get signed up with the mentor that you want, or that Heather suggests, trust me Heather knows her stuff and will make sure you get to talk to who will help you the best. Don’t wait til Saturday at 2pm and then be bummed out because your favorite mentor is booked solid. (Oh and PS make sure and say congrats to Heather and Ivan in mentoring, they just got engaged!! WHOOHOO!) Check out all of the panels, divide and conquer by having the band split up and going to different panels, taking notes and then share the notes with each other, learn as much as you possibly can, (there are over 50 speakers at all of the different panels, but not all of them take the time to mentor, so you’ll have to check out the list to see who is available and when), last but DEFINITELY not least, COME SEE US!!! It’s a new hotel, so I don’t know what “treats” we will be allowed, but we will be hosting an open mic stage right on the trade show floor, you can come play us a song or two and let everyone who’s listening know who you are, where you’re from and where your showcase is, it’s truly a great opportunity, plus who doesn’t want to listen to music while they are at a music conference! Our stage is open Friday and Saturday from 11-5. We have to shut down at 5pm each day so everyone is ready for the Keynote Speaker! Friday’ keynote is Andrew Goodfriend, this guy established TKO where he works with amazing artists like Alien Ant Farm, Buckcherry, Drowning Pool, Fuel, Mushroomhead, etc.. Then Saturday it’s Diane Lockner, she is the Regional Manager NE and Midwest for Triple Tigers Records. She spent 11 years at Capitol Nashville where she has worked with many amazing country artists, plus she’s worked with a few record companies where she worked with artists such as: Britney Spears, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, etc.. and believe it or not, back in the day she started out writing for us, right here at the PA Musician Magazine!! Both keynotes will be well worth a listen, that’s for sure! After the keynotes from 7pm-2am it’s time for all of the Showcases at over 28 venues throughout the area. I highly suggest using Uber in the area to get around, if you don’t already have your own transportation, then Saturday, it all starts over again! One thing I always struggle to understand is why I can’t get more local bands to leave their egos at home and come out and support the Millennium Music Conference. Sure you might’ve heard it all before, or maybe you don’t want to play a little “showcase” spot where you usually get paid to play a full night of music, but what you don’t regularly get is all of the Networking!! Socializing with fellow musicians who have been there done that, etc… This is a musician’s conference!! This is THE conference that is here to help YOU develop as an artist the way that you want to. These mentors are just here to help nudge you in the right direction and help guide you in the process. These mentors have “made it” somehow in the scene and want to help YOU “make it” too. You do need credentials to come to the trade show, but if you are a submitted Showcase artist, you have the credentials you need waiting for you at the Sign in Table. You can also purchase credentials, there are some people that are smart and just come to soak up as much info as they can! Whatever you decided I hope to see everyone Out and About at the MMC, enjoying the music, and talking, breathing, playing, living, and eating music!! I don’t know if you can tell, but I’m a little excited!!!! See ya at the MMC!!!! That’s all my craziness for this month, make sure you check out all of our venue schedules to see what’s happening throughout the month right here in the wonderful state of PA. I was excited to see Double K’s schedule, all of my Double K friends, make sure and check out Frayed Nott and give them a chance! You won’t be disappointed!! It’s going to be a busy month for sure, but I’m looking forward to every rockin’ minute! If you see me Out & About please say Hello! If you have any questions you can email me at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. You can also read all the articles and check out our Digital Issue at www. pamusician.net. Don’t forget… SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!!!

NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman

Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! The new year has started off with some great local shows including the reunited notLebowskis at Harrisburg’s Zeroday, Jet Silver with Luv Gods at HMAC, Strangest Hearts at Zeroday and The Give Take at Fat Daddys in York. Look for future shows from these best bands of Harrisburg. The Give Take return with a free show downtown on March 17 at JB Lovedrafts. And Jet Silver are currently in the process for recording their second album. The Killers brought their latest tour to Philadephia’s Wells Fargo Center on Jan 13. The band played the best of their recorded carreer over the course of twenty-three songs. Their new album ‘Wonderful Wonderful’ was of most focus as The Killers performed five of its ten tracks. Of course, the set included many hits “Somebody Told Me,” “Runaways,” “When You Were Young” and “Mr. Brightside.” The Killers are averaging 14,500 tickets sold per show with an average price of nearly $75. The absolute highlight of January included two U.S. Bombs concerts in Philadelphia and Long Branch, NJ. The legendary punk band that formed in 1993 in Orange County, California are celebrating their 25th anniversary with a one-month U.S. twenty-three city tour. The U.S. Bombs play ‘77 style punk heavily influenced by bands like The Clash, The Ramones, and The Sex Pistols. It was fantastic to see frontman Duane Peters yelling his heart out and still being “The Master of Disaster.” Peters is truly an incredible artist and the epitome of punk rock - he’s the real deal, creative, no non-sense, a DIY ethic and true to everything punk. I feel very fortunate to have met Duane again, share words and express how much his music and everything he does means. NATIONAL NEWS: Tom Petty’s wife and daughter recently released the results of his autopsy confirming the overdose was due to a variety of medications The Los Angeles coroner’s office issued its official findings, which confirmed that Petty had a mix of prescription painkillers, sedatives and an antidepressant. Among the medications found in his system were fentanyl and oxycodone. Petty suffered from emphysema, a fractured hip and knee problems that caused him pain, the family said, but he was still committed to touring. He had just wrapped up a tour a few days before he died in October at age 66. Dana and Adria Petty stated, “We feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident,” and added “Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.” Slayer have announced they will embark on their farewell tour this Summer. “After 35 years, it’s time to like, collect my pension,” frontman Tom Araya said. He spoke about his priorities shifting since he became a family man, although playing live still gave him incredible energy. “I like singing and just spitting that s--t out and convincing everybody that this guy is a f*ing maniac. It’s like action. You feel the lyrics and you show them with your facial expressions, your body expressions, your intensity - I love that s--t.” The tour also includes Lamb of God, Anthrax, Behemoth and Testament and visits Santander Arena in Reading on June 4. Britney Spears is bringing her Las Vegas show ‘Piece Of Me’ to the East Coast before heading to Europe. The singer’s four-

She was in London recording, and died just “hours before” she was to record vocals for a cover of “Zombie” by metal band Bad Wolves. Former Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland (69) passed away while living in a self-imposed exile in the mountains of Lugo, Spain. Holland joined Priest in 1979 and compiled an incredible discography with the metal gods, playing on British Steel, Point of Entry, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, Turbo and Ram It Down. The cause of Holland’s death is unknown. Former Motorhead guitarist Edward “Fast Eddie” Clarke (67) died in a hospital while being treated for pneumonia. Clarke joined Motorhead soon after it was founded in 1975. He was the final survivor of the band’s classic lineup with bassist Lemmy Kilmister and drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor. Kilmister and

The tour begins at MGM National Harbor near Washington DC on July 12 & 13 and includes a show at Sands in Bethlehem on July 17. nights. “This tour is going to be a blast!” Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott said. “We’ve toured together before and it was massive. This time it’s going to be even bigger and better!” The two bands toured together in 2006 and sold an average of 13,308 tickets per show and the tour grossed more than $28.3 million. They visit Hersheypark Stadium on May 25. The iconic, Frank Gehry-designed roof of Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. collapsed January 13th as it was in the process of being raised 20 feet as part of a $55 million rehabilitation project. The roof was on hydraulic lifts at the time of the collapse and no one was injured. It was a complete collapse of the entire roof over pavilion seats and the stage wasn’t harmed at all. Merriweather celebrated its 50th anniversary last summer and is one of the nation’s premier, historic amphitheaters with a venue capacity of 19,316. All shows are expectedly to go as planned this summer with no delay. There is no talk of a tour, but the original members of the Stray Cats are reuniting for one performance in April. Guitarist/singer Brian Setzer, upright bassist Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom - burst on the scene in 1982 with “Stray Cat Strut” and introduced rockabilly to the MTV generation. The April 21 performance will be at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas at the Viva Las Vegas Car Show, that also features rockabilly legends Jerry Lew Lewis and Duane Eddy. Pearl Jam’s website briefly displayed some summer tour dates at U.S. baseball stadiums including Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Safeco in Seattle, Boston’s Fenway Park and Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, Montana. The leaked dates were soon taken down but it’s clear Pearl Jam is planning to announce a U.S. stadium tour. Frontman Eddie Vedder is a prominent Cubs fan having grown up in the Midwest. Pearl Jam did similar shows in 2016, including two nights at Fenway Park (sold out, 72,722 tickets), and two nights at Wrigley Field (83,478 tickets sold). THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price

I’ll never accuse post-holiday season winter of ever being my favorite time of the year, but a few seasonal live music-related events make it more bearable. One of them is the Millennium Music Conference (MMC) – this year’s 22nd annual edition happens at a new host facility, the Park Inn by Radisson Harrisburg West in Mechanicsburg. MMC will again feature a two-day business conference, keynote speakers, the trade show, the PA Musician Acoustic Stage, and showcase performances around the Harrisburg vicinity from nearly 300 different bands and artists. And participating Millennium bands and artists are again invited to submit recordings into my 105.9 Qwik-Rock “Homegrown Rocker” radio show drop box for airplay on the show – and one recording will be randomly drawn at the end of the end of Saturday’s trade show, with the winner scoring an instant guest interview on the March 25 edition of the program! Another event that helped to warm up my winter was last month’s fifth annual Feel the Heat Chili & Soup Cookoff, presented by Downtown Bedford, Inc. Various local eateries, catering services and taverns – with some as far away as Cumberland, Maryland – provided their tastiest and most creative chilis and soups for participants to sample, with sampler votes determining the winners. Live music was again part of this year’s event, as each of the seven downtown Bedford tasting venues hosted acoustic performers. My first stop was at HeBrews Coffee Company, where Brandi Naugle was singing and strumming country-flavored numbers from Miranda Lambert, Loretta Lynn, songs from her CD and more. Brandi demonstrated a smooth and sturdy singing voice and a pleasant stage presence. I then headed up Pitt Street to Bedford Candies, where Happy Hour – the duo of Tommy Fix and Sarah Mellott – was performing. With Tommy playing acoustic guitar and both singing, Happy Hour mixed up a variety of hits spanning country, pop, rock and

soul – including numbers from Johnny Cash, Zac Brown Band, Bill Withers, Florida-Georgia Line, 4 Non Blondes and more. My third stop was Founders Crossing (antique and gift shop), where Coltt Winter Lepley entertained, strumming and singing a selection of country, folk and gospel numbers. (More about Coltt later.) I then caught Dunnings Creek as they performed at Pigeon Hill Studios (art space). The duo of Mark Diehl and Duane Sipe strummed and sang a mixture of rock and pop hits, including numbers from Rick Springfield, John Mellencamp, Collective Soul, Green Day, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and more. At Oak Spring Winery’s new Bedford location, the duo of Eric Delozier and Mo Yon mixed up acoustic classic rock and folk numbers from Neil Young, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and others. I then headed to Locality art space, where the Bad Luck Lover Boys performed original songs and select covers. Singer/ guitarist Chris Diehl (son of Mark from Dunnings Creek), guitarist Matt Godisart and bassist Brennon Miller performed indie rock/punk toned original songs, plus versions of the Beatles’ “Love Me Do” and more. I finished my chili and soup-tasting tour at Briar Valley Winery, where Dave Howsare wrapped up his performance with Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind” and the Classics IV’s “Spooky,” which featured some very detailed guitar work. The mixture of music, chilis and soups made for a fun day. When the votes were tallied, the Most Creative Soup honors went to Fairways Bar and Grill for their Dill Pickle Soup, and Most Creative Chili went to Omni Bedford Springs Resort for their Smoked Beef & Ham Hock Chili with Shishito Relish. Bedford Elks won Best Flavored Soup for their Cream of Mushroom, while Maddie Lou’s Barbeque took Best Flavored Chili honors for their Smoked Sweet Meat Chili. The recent holiday season provided several live music highlights. One of the final shows I saw in 2017 occurred at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge, as local rockers Agent Smith continued to build their resume as musical chameleons by morphing into “Agent INXS” to mark the 20th anniversary of the passing of INXS frontman Michael Hutchence in November, 1997. Joining the Agent roster of singer Steve Oswalt, guitarist Phil “Philly Grooves” Wagner, bassist Mike Stanley and drummer Shawn Gioiosa were guests Phil Steele on keys and Ran-

Guest Randy Rutherford w/ Agent INXS dy Rutherford on sax. Transforming for their second set of the night, Agent INXS mixed up hits and curios from throughout INXS’s career; starting with “Don’t Change,” and including “Listen Like Thieves,” “Disappear,” “Elegantly Wasted” and “The Devil Inside.” Randy then stepped in during “Need You Tonight,” and added his sax talents for the remainder of the set. The group continued to crank up the INXS hits and dance floor action with “Never Tear Us Apart,” “Original Sin,” “Suicide Blonde,” “New Sensation” and “What You Need.” The group sounded airtight through it all; they delivered pulsing rhythms, driven by Mike’s throbbing bass work on the more dance-friendly numbers. Agent Smith also sounded strong on their first and third sets, doing numbers from Tom Petty, Billy Squier, Loverboy, Cracker, Toadies, Van Halen, the Tubes, Cheap Trick, Alice In Chains and more. Guest Autumn Shiffler belted out impressive lead voice on Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” and Agent Continued on page 22....

Amanda and THE NOISE…

Honesty that hits you in your core, and leaves you screaming for more! Article & Photos by Rachel Rocks

Amanda and THE NOISE are primarily a rock n’ roll band with a twist of a more Riot Grrl emphasis. Some of you may be asking what is “Riot Grrl”, I know I was, Riot Grrl is a hardcore punk rock way of allowing women to express themselves through music. They are an all-female group, and they focus most of their songs on

of those bands, when their drummer suddenly quit. Of course, guitar players are everywhere, so Patty took one for the team and learned how to play the drums, after all, how hard can it be!?! Well it’s by far not the easiest instrument play, and she’s still learning more all the time, but one thing for sure is she loves it!! Amanda and THE NOISE is primarily an original band, but they do throw in a cover once in a while to get the crowd hooked in and rockin’ along. They currently have at least one full solid hour set, but they are working on a whole new batch of songs. Amanda writes all of the lyrics to their music, and then presents it to “THE NOISE” and together they tweak it until they get it perfect for on the stage. As you listen to their music you can quickly hear their feminist approach in their music, I always appreciate their lyrics because they are just straight up honest ways people view this world. The great part about these ladies is they actually express their feelings and sing about them, unlike some people who are always guarded and miserable, these ladies are boisterous and having a blast in the process. They do have one wild rap song about “Black Slacks”.. maybe it’s just because my new job makes me wear black slacks, but to me it’s just

Amanda and THE NOISE are a very tight knit group, they are that type of band that not only plays together, but hangs together too. Do yourself a favor and reach out and get Amanda and THE NOISE booked at your venue. You can email Amanda at: thenoise.amanda@gmail. com. Trust me you won’t be disappointed! female empowerment and tackling controversial issues such as domestic violence, discrimination, and a wide range of too many horrible things that are happening in our society today. Amanda Schaedler first started playing as an angry singer/songwriter, but eventually she decided she not only wanted to be more upbeat and happier, she also wanted to make more NOISE! It took a while to find the perfect match because she had to search high and low for team players that were committed, and understood Amanda’s goals and plans for her music.. She always loved the idea behind being a 2nd Wave Riot Grrl, and after she stumbled across Erica Tipton on bass, and Patty Wilson on drums, she thought it just might become a reality, and sure enough, it did! They’ve now all been together as a band for a year and a half and they are making as much NOISE as they possibly can. Erica has been slappin’ the bass for over 13 years. She used to be in a punk rock band that pretty much just played house shows, which was really cool, even though chances are that’s why she’s deaf in her left ear! Erica has wanted to play in a band as long as she can remember, and she’s so glad she found these ladies to rock the stage with! Patty has been in a few different bands throughout the area. She was actually a rhythm guitar player in one February, 2018

She likes to use her Zine just like her music, it’s a great way to express herself and make sure people are aware of all of the craziness happening in the world, and of course ways we can work together to make the world a happier place. She creates her zine so it’s educational and informative. It’s also a great way for her to promote the band. She hands them out to anyone who will take one. Amanda isn’t the only creative one in the band, Erica has her own design company, El Robot Designs. She designed their logo and she also already created artwork for their albums.

so meaningful and the fact that you can tell the song is over when Erica starts screaming makes the song even more appropriate to my life and other’s lives too I’m sure. Unfortunately Amanda and THE NOISE don’t have any dates right now to write about, but they are heading into the studio getting ready to record their next EP. They are super excited to work with Sam Kelly of the Big Fat Meanies. They hope to get their EP recorded quickly so they can get out there and promote themselves. Speaking of promoting themselves, not only does Amanda write songs, she also writes, creates, and distributes her one little “zine” in true Riot Grrl fashion. Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

Smith wrapped up the night with a funky “Play That Funky Music” medley that infused portions of the Temptations’ “Shakey Ground,” Parliament’s “Give Up the Funk,” Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” Watch for more chameleonic behavior from Agent Smith in the months ahead, including a possible Soundgarden tribute “Agent Cornell” angle. D.D. & the Pub Crawlers provided the musical soundtrack during my transition from 2017 into 2018 as they rang in the New Year at Altoona’s Unter Uns Music & Entertainment Society. The Pub Crawlers – nine members strong with four-piece horn section and Kevin Siegel filling in on drums – brought the party as they mixed it up between soul, ska, rock’n’roll, swing, pop and other favorites. Singer Dana “D.D.” Martino’s voice was in great form, backed by Art Martino on bass and backing vocals, guitarist Jim Howsare, keyboardist Tim Boland and Kevin on drums. The horn section – Anthony Martino and Lyndsay Reilly on saxophones, Adam Lingenfelter on trumpet and Nick Martino on trombone – brought their vibrant brass assault out onto the dance floor early and often, mixing it up with dancers and serenading the dance floor crowd. The group’s song selection tapped everything from Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” to Sam & Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “Soul Man,” Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ “Impression That I Get,” Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4,” Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” Louis Prima’s “Jump Jive and Wail,” Wham’s “Careless Whisper,” Aha’s “Take On Me,” Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ “Zoot Suit Riot,” Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s “You and Me and The Bottle Makes Three Tonight” and more. Coupled with the traditional champagne toasts plus hot dogs and sauerkraut at midnight, D.D. & the Pub Crawlers helped the Unter Uns crowd start the New Year on a happy note – and the group is already scheduled to bring in 2019 at the Unter Uns as well. The first new band I witnessed in the New Year was area country performers Railtowne during their first visit to the stage of the Four Dees Lounge last month. Five familiar area music scene names converge on this new project: Ty Ayers on lead vocals and guitar, Kenny Murdick on lead guitar, Paul Rainey on bass, Eric Wertz on drums and Nathan Beatty on keys. Playing their second show overall, Railtowne kept the dance floor busy all night with their blend of modern and classic country, including favorites from Jason Aldean, Joe Nichols, Sawyer Brown, Lee Brice, Big & Rich, Cole Swindell, Eric Church, Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Cash and more. Ty demonstrated a sturdy voice up front and also introduced an original tune toward night’s end, while Kenny – in his first country project – showed some dazzling guitar work of a different flavor. An additional highlight was guest Matt Pletcher stepping up to sing on a few songs, including Hank Williams, Jr.’s “Family Tradition.” A good-sized crowd greeted Railtowne on their Four Dees debut; watch for more of this group on area stages in the weeks and months ahead. Already established on State College stages, The Tommy Roberts made their first Altoona foray last month, playing at McGarvey’s for the first time. I arrived in time to catch the last song from show openers The Blacksnakes, who sounded strong on their brand of charged electric blues. The Tommy Roberts has expanded in number since the last time I saw them in 2016; joining the original acoustic inception of singer/guitarist Brian Cleary and guitarist, singer and harmonica man Nate Cutshall are bassist Chuck Haegele, drummer John Macko, fiddle player Aly Martin and Brian’s sister, Mary Ann, on backing vocals and tambourine. This fleshed-out version of The Tommy Roberts mixed up alt-country, folk-rock, blues and rock on a variety of original tunes and select covers. This group was musically strong and showed different angles on each tune, with Nate showing some fiery harmonica wailing and Brian delivering some hearty guitar solos along the way. The new original tunes sounded good, as well as their one of their established favorites, “Fishin’ for Pearls.” They also demonstrated fresh arrangements on “Hard to Handle,” a hip-hop-edged take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile,” and a funk-blues encore rendition of the Beatles’ “Blackbird.” The Tommy Roberts will go on hiatus for a little while, as Brian takes over guitar duties in the band Pure Cane Sugar and Nate will be working with other projects. While the Penn State student populace was out of town for the holiday break in late December, I finally caught up with Ted McCloskey & the Hi-Fi’s as they performed one of their weekly Friday shows at the Phyrst in State College. observed a stripped-down version of the Hi-Fi’s this night, with namesake Ted on lead vocals and guitar, Jack Wilkinson on drums and Rene Witzke on bass. Every Ted McCloskey & the Hi-Fi’s show is high-energy fun and surprises, and this one was no exception, as the group mixed up an eclectic range of sounds, from Modest Mouse’s “Float On” to Todd Rundgren’s “Bang on the Drum,” an extended jamming display on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” Hank Williams, Sr.’s “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” AC/DC’s “I’m a Rocker” and “TNT,” Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died,” Jack belting out the blues on “Stormy Monday,” and the night-ending Nirvana jam version of “Come As You Are” with Ted taking his guitar out onto the dance floor to mix it up with some fans. This performance was feverish and enthusiastic, with Ted and the Hi-Fi’s delivering sharp and dazzling musicianship. Ted McCloskey & the Hi-Fi’s can reliably be seen on Fridays at the Phyrst and Saturdays at Bar Bleu in State College. I also saw Jack Wilkinson in action behind the drum kit at the Phyrst in December, this time as he filled in with another group I had not seen in a while, The Nightcrawlers. Jack joined frontman/guitarist Noah Figlin, singer Veronica Auger, bassist Peter Jogo and keyboardist/guitarist Erek Kapusta. I caught their last two sets, as The Nightcrawlers lit up the Phyrst with a mix of classic and new rock, pop and soul. Veronica shined on voice and demonstrated an upbeat stage presence as she belted out tunes from Sublime, Pat Benatar, Amy Winehouse, and especially Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” and the night-ending take on Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” Besides his stellar drum work, Jack showed he has a voice as well, delivering a hearty blues howl on Jimi Hendrix’s “Redhouse.” Noah dazzled on the guitar strings, Peter was rock solid on bass, and Erek fleshed out the group’s sound with his key and guitar underscores, fills and backing vocal work. The Nightcrawlers are also weekly inhabitants of the downtown State College music scene; see them Tuesdays at the Phyrst, Thursdays at The Saloon and Fridays at Bar Bleu. Ember’s Fall performed in two different hard-hitting bills I saw in recent weeks at McGarvey’s. They capped a tri-

ple-bill with Dragline and One Adam 12 just before Christmas. I missed Dragline’s opening set, but eyewitness accounts gave rave reviews – watch for the lowdown on this group in next month’s writ. Cambria County rockers One Adam 12 then performed a set of new and older originals, reprising tunes off their debut CD Earworm and introducing tunes from their new Sophomore Jinx follow-up album. The group’s sample specialist, Anthony Dostal, is back in action after his recent medical leave, rejoining singer/guitarist Lloyd Rummell, guitarist Bill Stiles, bassist Joe Stiles and drummer Brandon Adams. One Adam 12 provides a sound that cannot be pigeonholed, blending elements of hard rock, metal, punk, surf, Misfits-toned horror rock and more. They have forged an identifiable, signature sound, defined by Lloyd’s bold, soaring voice, the rhythm section’s authoritative rumble to drive the tunes forward, and Anthony’s digital touches, from theramin-flavored fills to sonic booms, surges and more. Ember’s Fall then brought the heavy artillery, slamming their brute-force brand of technical metalcore. Now based in northern PA, the group played as a four-piece this night, with frontman Dennis Ray Gee Jr. wielding rhythm guitar duties, with Jairo Cerritos on lead guitar, Adam Schaffer on bass and

Agent Smith Agent INXS tribute by Jim Price

Veronica Auger & Noah Figlin of the Nightcrawlers Josh Sheesley on drums. They pummeled McGarvey’s with tight executions of selections from their original song arsenal, including “No Escape,” “Wrath,” “Between Hope and Hopeless” and more. Ember’s Fall was powerful and precise, providing dynamic song arrangements that varied between melodic elements and all-out fury. Ember’s Fall also closed out a three-band, one solo performer bill at McGarvey’s last month. Austin, Texas-based solo artist Alex Culbreth and Harrisburg-based metalcore rockers If Not For Me performed before my arrival, and Fyre was in the midst of their set as I entered the venue. Singer Matt Stoyanoff, guitarists Zach Kensinger and Sean Stringer, bassist Joe Earnest, drummer Tanner Kaurudar and backing singer Denice Stoyanoff sounded strong on several new originals, including a lengthier progressive metal-geared epic called “The Life and Times of a Demi-God.” At full strength this night, Ember’s Fall again scorched the walls with their intense set, mixing tunes from their recently-issued Faceless EP with other new songs and Continued on page 24

select tracks from their Cessation debut CD. The group introduced a new bass player this night, as Kyle Linscott replaces Adam Schaffer, joining the aforementioned band members and guitarist Westley Sickler (who did not perform during the December show). Ember’s Fall returns to McGarvey’s on Feb. 23. Also at McGarvey’s, I took in the ‘Christmas Eve’s eve’ bill of Zach Wade & the Good Grief and The Unknown Legends. Their debut performance, The Unknown Legends brings together singer/guitarist Eric Delozier, percussionist Ed Hofer and cellist Kirsten Leigh. These three pooled their talents into a fresh, rustic sound and drew unanimous cheers as they performed a variety of folk-toned numbers. They captivated with their creative arrangements on such tunes as Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer,” a folk rendering of Blink 182’s “Dammit,” Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” Pink Floyd’s “Time,” and the seasonal set-ending folksy read on “Silent Night.” Zach Wade & the Good Grief then performed two sets of upbeat original acoustic-rock numbers and select covers. Namesake, singer and guitarist Zach, lead guitarist Rogan Allen, bassist Devin Pierce and drummer Keegan Allen introduced several new song compositions, as well as favorites from their EP @ the Bitter

End. They also did select tunes from Counting Crows, Dave Mason, Michael Jackson, Gin Blossoms, Foo Fighters, Stevie Wonder, Rusted Root and a version of “Please Come Home for Christmas.” According to Rogan, the group plans to get back into the studio this year to do more recording. I also saw two-thirds of The Unknown Legends – Eric and Kirsten – last month at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg as part of an artist showcase hosted Charles McClanahan. The drummer for Matt Otis & the Sound, Charles is also a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Charles used this show to “pay it forward,” sharing his stage with other rising area talent. I missed opening performer Brandi Naugle, but arrived as Bedford-based singer/songwriter Coltt Winter Lepley was performing. Coltt did nice work on a variety of acoustic classic rock, folk and country favorites, showing a good voice on numbers from Bob Dylan, Lyle Lovett, Grateful Dead, Simon & Garfunkel, Marshall Tucker Band, John Prine and more. Eric and Kirsten followed Coltt with an eclectic mixture of acoustic folk numbers. With Kirsten providing cello accompaniment, Eric sang out modern and back-of-the-rack folk tunes, including Todd Snider’s “Play a Train Song” to close the set. I’m always impressed with how Eric becomes immersed in each song and ‘becomes the song’ –

another seated observer remarked to me his amazement at this as well, that Eric knows and lives each song as he performs it. Kirsten provided just the right touches with her string accompaniment as well, resulting in a pleasant, tranquil performance. Host Charles closed out the show with his own set, strumming and singing a mix of original songs and a few spiritual numbers, such as acoustic takes on “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” Charles displayed a sturdy, smooth voice and pleasant personality, continually thanking the audience for their support. Watch for all of these talented and rising performers as they bring their music to area stages. Matt Pletcher continues to maintain a busy solo schedule around the area. During his performance last month at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub, Matt’s voice was in good form as he mixed up acoustic country, rock favorites and original songs. He performed tunes from David Allan Coe, John Mellencamp, Cole Swindell, Foo Fighters, Chris Janson, George Michael, Green Day and more, and he also broke out the title track from his debut album, Sure Thing. Keep an eye open for Matt’s solo, trio and full group performances around the region. I also caught Rich Edmundson in action last month at McGarvey’s. Rich presents one of the more unique shows on local stages, improvising and freestyling on original songs and a few select covers. This night’s performance featured off-the-cuff vocalizations and expansive adventures on his acoustic guitar. It’s not uncommon to see Rich ‘enter the zone,’ with a wide grin appearing on his face as he launches into his guitar excursions and rides the moments for all they are worth. Rich is currently in the process of assembling a band, and can be seen performing solo or collaborating with other musicians on local stages. Felix & the Hurricanes are closing in on three decades of entertaining audiences far and wide. The group – namesake, singer and guitar slinger Felix Kos, singer/bassist Jeff Clapper and drummer Bob Watters – continues to perform every Sunday night at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. During the show I caught last month, the Hurricanes performed a wide variety of material. This group is constantly adding new songs to their large arsenal; this night included at least two I hadn’t seen them do before, versions of Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle” and Bob Seger’s “Betty Lou’s Getting’ Out Tonight.” They also energized the crowd with tunes from the Allman Brothers, Eddie Money, the Beatles, Molly Hatchet, Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Chris Stapleton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more. A guest singer named Rachel stepped up to display her impressive voice on Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” and the group also did original tunes such as “The Feeling” and “Beale Street.” Other performances I saw recently included…New York’s American Pinup, headlining a triple-bill last month at McGarvey’s with their charged brand of female-led, original power pop/punk…And I saw (and performed at) several installments of the weekly Tuesday Open Mic Night at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg, and the weekly Wednesday Open Mic Night at Altoona’s Unter Uns, presented by the Live Music Preservation Society. News and notes… After a nearly 20-year run on area stages, the “Party Plane” has announced its final landing; Flight 19 will close out their run on area stages, which began in 1999, performing shows through the end of June. A special “landing party” show will take place at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge on April 21, during which past and founding members of the group will reunite on stage…The band Star 69 will host a benefit dance at the Bedford American Legion on Feb. 10, with proceeds helping out Fueled By Ignorance (F.B.I.) singer Ronnie Sheirer, who recently underwent a major surgery and is unable to earn income until he recovers…For those thinking about warmer weather, Quiet Riot and Great White have been announced as headliners for Johnstown’s Thunder In the Valley motorcycle rally in late June, and Blues Traveler has been announced to headline Johnstown’s Flood City Music Festival in early August…Singer Pat Conway is retiring from live performing, and stepping away from Cambria County rockers Bazooka Joe, who have also announced their farewell from area stages…Former Bazooka Joe drummer Jared Fetcko takes over drumming duties with Johnstown hard rockers Rust...Duane Sipe is taking over bass duties with area rockers Urban Myth…Hate Grenade will release their second full-length CD, called The King Is Dead, on March 10… Small Town Horror Show’s second CD will be called Way Past Indifferent, and will be issued later this year. PA MUSICIAN REVIEWS By Jim Price

STERLING KOCH – GUITAR & B (Full Force Music) Anyone who has followed his career can attest that Sterling Koch has worked with a variety of musical flavors over the years, including hard rock, blues, blues rock, gospel blues and bluesrock, acoustic music and more. On his latest instrumental album, GuitaR & B, Sterling boldly steps outside his comfort zone to embrace elements of smooth jazz, R&B and even hip-hop flavors over the disc’s eleven tracks. Sterling works with several producers on this album, and experiments with a diverse range of contemporary sounds and rhythms, spanning techno, dub and more. But while his musical environment has changed, Sterling’s guitar prowess embraces that environment, and he shows that he is capable on the jazz guitar front. And while every track presents a different angle and flavor, Sterling maintains tasteful, fluid and precise guitar work that propels each melody forward. The opener “Easy Road” welcomes listeners to this new adventure with its punchy, funky rhythms and Sterling’s flavorful guitar sounding perfectly at home. Sterling’s jazz guitar flourishes blend in well with the dance beat-propelled “Holiday,” and he channels George Benson flavors on “Unconditional” and the dreamy “Another Day.” He demonstrates smooth soul and jazz tones on “Trapped in A Minor” and “Summervibe,” as well as a crisp funkiness on “Enough.” And milder tones prevail on latter numbers on the album such as “How to Love” and the title track disc-closer “GuitaR & B.” The diversity of the arrangements and melodies keeps GuitaR & B sounding fresh throughout, while Sterling’s guitar presence provides the connecting thread and continuity through it all. The mix is clean and full throughout the album, with guitars, beats and other elements sounding balanced and even. Sterling Koch successfully turns to a fresh new musical page with GuitaR & B, embracing a new frontier and delivering a fun and tasteful set. (The CD can be obtained through Sterling’s website, www. sterlingkoch.com.) SILVER SCREEN – INERTIA EP (no label) Featuring members and alumni from Cambria and Somerset County bands such as Van Waylon, Saving Elizabeth, Handicap Parking Lot and A Faster Ride, Johnstown-based foursome Silver Screen formed in 2016 with their mission to “Make America Grunge Again.” Their six-song debut EP, Inertia, introduces a hard-rocking sound rooted in the grunge-rock traditions of Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and early Foo Fighters. Frontman and rhythm

guitarist Stephen Platt and lead guitarist Ben Ressler conjure thick and chunky riffage, assisted by pounding, swaggering rhythms from bassist Alex Richardson and drummer Austin Danel. Also the group’s chief songsmith, Stephen delivers a vocal blend of melody, agitation and resignation as he voices lyrical themes of anxiety and unrest. Silver Screen varies the angles of attack here, establishing a go-for-broke pace on the disc-opener “Talk to Me,” and varying the tempo on the hefty rocker “Labelled Off.” The group rocks slower and more expansive on the STP-flavored “Codeine” and the darker-toned “Make Believe,” fires off rowdy boogie on “Bar Swing,” and finishes with a funkier presence on “Cheap Nachos.” All six melodies are sturdy, and Silver Screen executes them with fire and purpose. Recorded and produced in Monroeville by Michael O’Malley, Inertia sounds full and balanced, yet allows the band’s grunginess and abrasive edge to cut through. Inertia provides a strong calling card for Silver Screen, and defines their powerful, ‘90s-inspired hard-rocking foundation. (The EP can be purchased digitally through iTunes and Amazon, and the CD can be obtained through the group’s Reverbnation and Facebook pages.)

STEVE BROSKY – STILL (Radiophonic Records) Allentown’s Steve Brosky has established himself as a mainstay of the Lehigh Valley music scene through the past four decades, garnering comparisons to Bruce Springsteen with his brand of edgy, blue-collar rock, folk and blues. His seventh album, Still, offers ten captivating songs that span a variety of styles and angles. As a wordsmith, Steve mixes personal reflections with touches of wit, and delivers those words with a hearty, sandy voice. Fleshing out the songs are guitarists Jimmy Meyer and Ken Sifter, bassists Suavek Zaniesienko and Josh Klein, organist Rich Repsher, drummers Wayne Maura, Josh Kanusky and Tiff Kent, plus horn and string players, backing singers and more. Steve celebrates being himself and not caving in to trends on the punchy disc-opener “Still Ain’t Got a Tattoo,” and acknowledges the power of women in his world on the folk blues of “That’s What She Said.” He seeks redemption on the Van Morrison-flavored “I’ll Find My Way Back to You,” and taps a Louisiana vibe on the sullen “Madame Blue.” The soulful “Johnny Corporation” mocks corporate excess and greed, while the raucous “Jersey Plates” pokes fun at drivers from the Garden State. Perhaps the strongest song on the album – “In Your Arms” – encourages a user’s resistance in a battle against heroin addiction, while the disc-closer “Got to Be More” takes on a gospel-toned gusto. Steve also includes two remakes, offering a funk-edged spin on Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz” and a tranquil, string-enhanced read of Stephen Foster’s classic “Oh Suzanna.” Steve’s vocals are sincere and heartfelt, and his associates generate colorful and diverse instrumental backdrops. Produced, mixed and mastered by Wayne Becker, Still sounds vibrant and full, enabling all components of Steve Brosky’s musical mixture to shine. With its lyrical sincerity and stylistic variety, Still is a strong, alluring album that showcases the experience, artistry and personality of its creator, as Steve Brosky shows the skills and savvy of a seasoned songsmith. (The CD can be obtained through Steve Brosky’s website, https://stevebrosky.com.) JAKE TAVILL – TWISTED IDEOLOGY EP (no label) Hailing from the easternmost coastal tip of New Jersey (Rumson), 21-year-old Jake Tavill has studied music at the Berklee College of Music and the Village East Conservatory, and is currently studying at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. His latest recording, Twisted Ideology, finds Jake blending an intriguing variety of flavors – from vintage 1920s-styled jazz and blues to modern horn-driven funk, soul and indie rock – into seven clever, captivating numbers. Play-

ing keys, Jake demonstrates a crisp, floating voice that can intensify into powerful, soulful interludes and diminish into quieter, pleading tones as each song warrants. Assisting Jake are his Indigo Child Blues Band associates Nick Piescor on guitar and organ, Ben Ley on drums and Casey O’Donnell on bass and synths; along with percussionist Owen Flanagan, a three-piece horn section and three backing singers. Each song is different, and Twisted Ideology doesn’t stay in any one place for too long. For instance, the funky, rowdy and determined opening track, “You’re Gonna Love Me,” veers into a brief mid-song Afro-Cuban jazz break; while Jake and his associates dance between Tin Pan Alley-era jazz and Motown flavors on the darkish and skeptical “It Don’t Matter.” He channels a Sly & the Family Stone-edged twist into the romantic acrobatics of “Legs in a Twist,” and builds into a rollicking, disco-edged rhythm to drive the reflective “Truth.” In a slower vein, Jake addresses mortality and living life to its fullest on the sullen “Why We Run,” and voices relationship pessimism on the darker soul-flavored “One Day Soon.” For the set’s finale, Jake weaves a multi-flavored tale of temptation on “Gold.” Produced by Jake and recorded at Shorefire Recording Studios in Long Branch, New Jersey; Twisted Ideology comes across crisp, balanced and full, with Jake’s vocal dynamics and all instrumental elements sounding clear and distinct. Jake Tavill builds his resume as a bold young artist with a sense of adventure and imagination on Twisted Ideology, and he furthers his credentials

as a rising name to keep an ear open for. (The recording can be obtained through Jake’s website, www.jaketavill.com.) PENSIVE FEAR – THE AWAKENING (Scarifide Records) Longtime Altoona-based guitarist Tom Brown started his original heavy metal studio project Pensive Fear in 1996. After recording various EP’s and single songs through the years, Tom has issued Pensive Fear’s first full-length album, The Awakening. Tom wrote the music and words for all 11 tracks, and plays lead guitar and keys on the album. Also appearing are Tom’s son Shawn on lead guitar, Fÿre frontman Matt Stoyanoff on lead vocals, Bob Gailey on bass and Dan Way on drums. Pensive Fear’s sound is rooted in the ‘80s-era classical heavy metal tradition of Yngwie Malmsteen, and is also informed by the progressive and power metal adventurism of Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Queensryche and Judas Priest. The songs feature complex melodies and arrangements with frequent tempo and chord changes, highlighted by Brown’s arpeggio-laced guitar pyrotechnics and Stoyanoff’s powerful, high-soaring vibrato. Lyrically, the songs ride loose themes of good vs. evil, absolution vs. condemnation, facing fear, and decisions and their consequences. From its sinister, horror movie-like beginning, the title track “The Awakening” opens the album with warning of a day of reckoning. Life’s crossroads and the quest for truth permeate the words of the terse “Where the Answer Lies” and “The Wrong Path,” while internal pain drives the hammering assault “The Anguish and Betrayal.” Brown’s composition and guitar skills take the forefront on the instrumental track “A Nightmare of Sorrow.” The performances and instrumental execution are tight and focused, and the album maintains a steady consistency throughout. Stoyanoff’s strong vocals reach incredible, majestic highs while sounding clear and distinctive throughout. The frequent changes and shifts in the arrangements keep the songs interesting and unpredictable. Recorded, mixed and produced by Brown, The Awakening sounds busy and cavernous, deep and thunderous. Tom Brown’s creative vision culminates in Pensive Fear’s The Awakening, an adventurous set that should provide intrigue to fans of classic and progressive metal. (The CD and digital album can be obtained through the Pensive Fear Bandcamp page, https://pensivefear.bandcamp.com/.) TRIPLE DOSE – BROTHERHOOD (no label) Emerging from the Milton area, Triple Dose delivers a hard-hitting wallop on their debut CD, Brotherhood. The lineup of lead singer Clint Rishel, lead guitarist Terry Cressman, rhythm guitarist/pianist Jason Budman, bassist Zach Lenig and drummer Matt Taylor blend elements of hard-driving classic, southern rock and country over Brotherhood’s 13 tracks. The album title represents the group’s solidarity with the nation’s armed forces and emergency responders, as well as personal themes of love, family and faith. The hard-hitting opening track, “Never Give Back,” champions the Second Amendment and the tradition of a strong military, while “Daddy’s Gun” offers rowdy, gun-toting southern-flavored rock. The uptempo “Hold on to Your Dreams” promotes a positive message of faith and staying the course, while the edgy “Tooth and Nail” fights to hold on to love. Other tracks are slower and more introspective, such as the piano-driven power ballad “Yesterday” and its message of a new beginning, “I Cry Alone” with its depiction of emotional pain, and “Finally Found Me” and its confrontation with the man in the mirror. The songwriting is solid, with effective song hooks and sturdy melodies. The performances are hearty and inspired; Clint sings the words with passion and purpose, and the rest of Triple Dose provides the appropriate hard rock thunder behind him. Produced and engineered by Tom Troutman, Brotherhood sounds crisp, deep and full, and allows the group’s sharp edge to be displayed prominently. Triple Dose yields a hearty dose of hard rock on Brotherhood, a strong and heartfelt debut that deserves to be played loud. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.tripledoserocks.com.)
