Phew, another issue close to being put to sleep at the printer, just have to right my little bit, which isn’t much this month. I thought once I had my Para Thyroid operated on I would have a lot more energy and get a lot more done. At first I did but I’m slowly slipping back into my old procras-
of Exit Hibernation Media who wrote the cover feature for us this momth about Hallow Creek in just one day. He’s an awesome photographer and writer and has wanted to help us out in the past. He called me about Hallow Creek and said how great they were and I gave my usual spiel about they need to run an ad to be placed on the cover feature list so he placed a $30 ad and he had his promotional tools ready so when I needed a quick cover feature he delivered . Definitely not one who procrastinates.

Another miracle worker is Steve Rudolph who provides the Jazz ads every month. He got his ad to me lickety split even though I called him at the last minute. Next month TimeBomb will be on the cover. I’m pretty excited for these guys. They advertised years ago, I would say in the 90’s. They parted ways for awhile but they are going full tilt once again and people seem to be enjoying their show. It will be an interesting cover. So many musicians we have had in our pages our still performing. Fuel, who moved to the Harrisburg area so they could utilize our pages to build a fan base and have access to the tri-state area. They were on our cover 3 or 4 times. I know that there is facebook now and social media and it is a great way to let people know you’re out there but it’s also good to use our pages to drive them to your website and give your business additional exposuure. Well I’m at the end of my space & Chad is waiting... Check out our rates on page 19 and start to advertise and be added to our cover list...it’s that easy. I love you Whitey!!!

Summer kicked life into hyper-drive! It really just needs to slooooowww down. We had a great family vacation, there’s nothing like just spending time with the ones we love. We never have enough time or money to do exactly what we want to do, but we still had a blast! So many people go on vacation this time of year it’s hard to draw a crowd out to a venue no matter who you are or where you are playing. Luckily, I did still see quite a few bands drawing a nice crowd. The first show of the month was a nice and laid-back show at St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown with Crossroads Duo. I haven’t seen Sterling and Jack for a while, it was nice to finally have a night to catch up with these guys. It was actually a little chilly for a night in June, but that didn’t stop the people from showing up for a great night of rockin’ blues. At St. Thomas Roasters during the Summer, the band sits right on the porch to share their music. St. Thomas has a great set-up with plenty of outdoor seating for anyone to stop by and enjoy the music, and there were quite a few people that were doing just that. Sterling just released a new single called “Holiday”. It is an instrumental song which is something we haven’t heard from Sterling for a while. He actually created a pretty cool video to go along with “Holiday” check it out for yourself, I’m sure you will be as entertained as I was. You will have to go to Crossroad Duo’s Reverb page and see where they will be rockin’ next, and plan your night out on the town. My next night out was a strange Thursday night show at Hollywood Casino for Solar Federation. If you haven’t guessed already Solar Federation is a Rush Tribute Band. I wasn’t there for the full show, but with the songs I did see, it was amazing to hear the precision in how they covered each Rush song. The lead singer is Julie Schreiber and her voice is simply amazing. I can’t believe her vocal range! If you are a Rush fan I highly suggest checking out Solar Federation. You definitely won’t be disappointed. While I was out delivering magazines on a Friday night I saw some friends posted that they were watching The Famous at Champion’s in Highspire so I decided to stop in. It was cool catching them Out and About once again. It’s fun hearing them play songs that still get people excited and on the dance floor. They are playing a lot of songs that you don’t hear anywhere else. It helps that they have all of the amazing vocal talent on their stage. The song possibilities are endless and they take full advantage of that with their song selection. You really never know what they are going to play next, but one thing for sure, get ready to have a good time, and BE FAMOUS! Speaking of being famous… my next day out was a super special one, it was the End of the Year Talent Show at Central Dauphin Middle School. To be able to have the nerves of steel and be able to perform in front of your peers is amazing in itself, and their talent was even more amazing. Especially one child in particular, my son Zack! He’s been taking guitar lessons from my Dad, Whitey the Mighty Noll. Back in December, thanks to SLP Concerts I was able to take Zack to his first big concert, Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown. After the concert he was talking about his experience at school, and Mr. Mariano, who just so happens to be one of the organizers of the talent show, challenged him to sing Shinedown for the talent show. Zack printed out the lyrics and got busy. In six months he was confident enough to not only play “Second Chance” by Shinedown, but sing it too! I was so proud of him, he really did an amazing job! He never performed in front of anyone before, so it was a super cool experience. I’m so grateful for Mr. Mariano for encouraging him and believing in him. The first 7 years of school were rough for Zack, I’m so glad he was finally able to connect with a few of his teachers this year. Another amazing performer was Kyler Nelson, you might recognize the last name, she is the daughter of Steve and Shelby Nelson from The Famous. The apple obviously doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Kyler played the piano and sang Panic! At the Disco’s “LA Devotee”! Great job Kyler!!! I can’t wait to see where their musical talents takes them both. My next day Out and About started with helping a friend move up in Liverpool. After a long day of moving, my boys and I stopped in and made an appearance at The Facktory in Liverpool for the benefit for Tubby’s. When I arrived Shiner was on the stage. Shiner is a punk rock band from the Liverpool/Harrisburg area. Chad Reichenbach, the organizer of this fundraiser, was the guitar player for Shiner. Organizing an event is never an easy task and Chad did a great job! When we arrived, the event seemed to be running very smoothly and with at least 10 bands, food, raffles, etc., that is not an easy task. The boys and I had fun playing some games that are always set up at The Facktory and listening to the music. If you are looking for a cool venue with endless possibilities and only 30 minutes from Harrisburg and Selinsgrove, I definitely suggest checking out www.facktoryentertainment.com. After Shiner, the Suicide Puppets took the stage. I haven’t seen these guys play for a very long time. They recently underwent some line-up changes. Steve Junkins from Can’t B Saved was filling in on guitar, but since the show I’ve heard that Steve is officially a new member of Suicide Puppets. The Suicide Puppets do a great job of not only being prepared musically, but they also all get suited up for the show with make-up, props, etc. A lot of bands say they have a “production”, but no one compares to the Suicide Puppets. Jack & Sterling of Crossroads Duo Zack, my oldest, YouTube videos of Suicide Puppets it was cool to finally get him to a show. Unfortunately, my boys were getting restless and they were ready to head home so that was all of the benefit I got to see. While I was there I had the chance to talk to Linda and Tom. It’s super cool and exciting to hear all of their ideas for the “New” Tubby’s once they finally get all of the licensing and building complete. Hopefully we will be rockin’ out to amazing music again at Tubby’s by the end of 2017! Kudos again to Chad for putting on a great event for a great cause! Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! Summer is in full swing with many great National bands playing live shows. Last month began with the return of The Orwells at Washington DC’s Black Cat. The Chicago based indie band just wrapped up their North American tour for the album ‘Terrible Human Beings.’ The Orwells are incredible live and bring a true dangerous rock ‘n’ roll show that always feels on the verge of a riot. They are presently touring Europe for the Summer and eventually will join Weezer on tour in October. The Biters came to Harrisburg on June 2nd to ABC’s Abbey Bar. A really great night which included locals Jet Silver reuniting once again. The Biters were touring their second album ‘The Future Ain’t What It Use To Be.’ The Atlanta based band has changed since their days in The Heart Attacks, but continue to bring honest straight forward rock music. The Biters are truly genuine people and show their southern hospitality with sincere interest to the fans after each show. They are a band who work very hard towards success, with constant touring and creating of new original music. Last month also included my first Iron Maiden show. was Six Bar Break at Spring Gate Vineyard. Spring Gate is practically in my back yard so it was nice to have Six Bar Break playing so close to home. Spring Gate was celebrating Summer Solstice and it was packed! When I got back into the beer garten area where the band was playing it was just a sea of people! Most nights I make it to Spring Gate they have a great crowd. Six Bar Break played a 3 hour set and I’m sure they made some new fans. It was cool to see such a great response to their original music. Ben, from Six Bar Break, will be back at Spring Gate in July. Check out Six Bar Break’s ad in this issue to see where else you can see Six Bar Break for yourself. Well that’s all for my craziness this month. I am again on the hunt for a full-time job. If anyone has any openings at their job or business, please pass it my way. NATIONALS continued,,,, Bristow, VA on June 3rd. ‘The Book Of Souls World Tour’ has been on the road for over a year and visited 35 countries. A very good show with an amazing fan base and tons of band merchandise, including their own ‘Trooper’ beer. Iron Maiden’s discography has grown to 38 albums. Doom metal band Ghost opened the show with their popular great song “Square Hammer.” The band from Sweden is known for their eccentric on-stage presence with faceless costumes and their vocalist Papa Emeritus, described as a “demonic anti-Pope.” Punk rock band The Explosion reformed for three separate shows including Philadelphia’s Boot & Saddle on June 9. Originally from Boston in 1998, The Explosion disbanded in 2007. They have reformed three times in order to play Punk Rock Bowling festival in Asbury Park, NJ. They are a fantastic punk band who once had seven major labels involved in a bidding war to sign the band to which Virgin Records won. Eric with Greg Kihn The Greg Kihn Band played a special radio show for 97.3 The River at Joe K’s Brewhouse in Union Deposit on June 16. The band’s most successful singles include “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em)” and “Jeopardy” both charted high on the Billboard Hot 100. Kihn spent most of the 1980s touring, opening arena-sized shows for groups like Journey, the Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones. Greg Kihn continues to tour today with his son Ry Kihn on lead guitar, Dave Danza (from Eddie Money) on drums, Dave Medd (from The Tubes) on keyboards, and Robert Berry (from Hush) on bass.
The highlight of the past month was seeing my favorite band of alltime, who introduced me to the world of music, U2. The iconic Irish band is currently touring celebrating the 30-year anniversary of their monumental album, The Joshua Tree. U2 visited Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on June 18 to a sell-out crowd over 50,000. The band began with hits “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “New Years Day,” “Bad” and “Pride,” before launching into The Joshua Tree album in its entirety. U2’s tour will cover 51 shows until late October in Brazil. NATIONAL NEWS: Local favorite siblings Lzzy and Arejay Hale are traveling around the U.S. with their band Halestorm this fall for the “Halloween Scream” tour. Starset and New Years Day are coming along as special guests. A full month of dates, many including large festivals. Halestorm plays the Maryland State Fair in Timonium on August 25 and also Rock Allegiance Festival in Camden, NJ on October 10 with Rob Zombie, Mastodon, Marilyn Manson, Five Finger Death Punch, In This Moment, Steel Panther, The Biters and more. Halestorm’s last full release was Into The Wild Life in 2015, but the band just released a music video for the single “Dear Daughter.” Washington DC is getting a new 6,000- capacity, music-only concert hall called The Anthem. The $60 million dollar venue will have its grand opening October 12 with hometown favorites Foo Fighters. Owner, Seth Hurwitz, is also partners with 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion. The Anthem will be located on The Wharf waterfront near the National Mall downtown. It will be surrounded by compatible businesses including restaurants, and it will also be serviced by water taxis to ferry over concertgoers from Georgetown. The venue will have an adjustable capacity, ranging from 2,500 to 6,000 among its floor seats and two balconies. Peter Criss, the original drummer and co-founder of the rock group Kiss has retired from the concert stage. He performed one last intimate show on June 17 at The Cutting Room in Manhattan, NY. A show filled with Kiss classics, his own solo material, and covers he always wanted to perform live but was told by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, “We don’t do that, it’s not Kiss.” Criss, 71, formed Kiss in Brooklyn with Stanley and Simmons and guitarist Ace Frehley in 1973. In 2014 Kiss was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where quarreling over which lineup
Eric with The Biters would perform at the ceremony ended up with Kiss not playing at all. “I wanted to play so bad that night, and I know Ace did,” he said. “And we didn’t ... I didn’t get to end my career the way I wanted to end it.” Fleetwood Mac says the band is planning a tour for next year. Keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie broke the news stating ‘We’re going to start rehearsing in March, next year. The tour is around June. It will be global.” McVie has been busy promoting her collaborative album with bandmate Lindsey Buckingham, who are currently touring together. The Mac last toured in 2015. Christine McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2013, it marked the first time she had played with the group since she left the lineup in 1998. Farm Aid will take place this year on September 16 in Burgettstown, PA at KeyBank Pavilion. Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews will also bring Jack Johnson, The Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Jamey Johnson and Blackberry Smoke to play. “Family farm agriculture is the heart of Pennsylvania,” Farm Aid President and founder Willie Nelson said in a statement Farm Aid has already raised more than $50 million for assistance to farmers and family farms over the years. This is the third time the event is being held in Pennsylvania since its inception in 1985. A guitar that Jerry Garcia played everywhere from San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom to Egypt’s Great Pyramids fetched over $1.9 million at an auction. The guitar was owned by devoted Deadhead Daniel Pritzker, a philanthropist, musician and film director who bought the instrument in 2002 for $790,000. “I’ve been a fan of The Dead since I was a kid, and playing this iconic guitar over the past 15 years has been a privilege,” said Pritzker. Garcia died in 1995. Music legend Gregg Allman, whose bluesy vocals and soulful touch on the Hammond B-3 organ helped propel the Allman Brothers Band to superstardom and spawn Southern rock, died March 27. He was 69. Allman died at his home in Savannah, Georgia, and the singer’s website says he “passed away peacefully.” Allman had cancelled some 2016 tour dates, due to “serious health issues,” citing a throat injury. And in March 2017, he canceled performances for the rest of the year. The Allman Brothers Band songs, “Whipping Post,” ‘’Ramblin’ Man” and “Midnight Rider,” helped define what came to be known as Southern rock. HALLOW CREEK —the Musical Chemistry of Two Like Minded Musicians
Hallow Creek is an acoustic country duo, hailing from Littlestown Pennsylvania, with strong roots in both Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Consisting of Walter Shipley (guitar) and Patrick “Boo” Rorrer (vocals, guitar), these longtime friends had always stayed in touch over the years, either by working together or with social activities. Walter, a bass player of 35 plus years in a variety of rock, pop, and metal bands, had spent several years in Tennessee before moving back to his home town area in Pennsylvania. In reconnecting with Boo, who was working and often spending his downtime singing karaoke at area pubs, Walter saw and heard the talent that Boo’s voice had taken on. Walter challenged Boo to move beyond the karaoke scene and see where their musical efforts could go. By giving Boo guitar lessons and cultivating the musician of him, Boo quickly moved beyond karaoke singing and advanced into someone who is now playing and singing on a regular basis. Boo, with his natural ability to write lyrics and melodies with an old-school country feel, soon began to tap into his inner creativity and started crafting true country songs that channeled his core influences such as Willie Nelson and George Strait. Fast forward two years, two studio albums and one live album later, Hallow Creek is now an Xvive Audio endorsed artist and on their way to bigger things. The first Hallow Creek album, “Walkin’,” was recorded in one day at Brimstone Studios outside of Nashville Tennessee. With the help of Odell (owner/operator) and Billy, two long time musicians and sound engineers, Hallow Creek was able to get a truly warm, organic acoustic guitar tone recorded that helped the music to have a natural feel. Using their Taylor acoustic guitars (900 series and 800 series), the resulting quality of instrument sound was exceptional, which allowed the natural smoothness of Boo’s voice, and the articulation of Walter’s technique, to shine through. With his many years as a sound engineer, Walter was able to efficiently produce the album with almost no edits or adjustments. Having their guitars tuned to 432 kHz, both Walter and Boo strongly feel that frequency helped to make the music sound more natural and pleasing to the ear. This tried and true approach was used on the forthcoming second album as well, titled “Just Stay Gone”, which will be released sometime in August. Hallow Creek returned to Brimstone Studios in Tennessee earlier this year to record their second album, and even put additional tracks down for a future EP as well. Building on the momentum of the first album, this new collection of songs is straight from the heart, and will affirm that the songwriting talent of Hallow Creek is not just a chance thing. Their third album (working title Hallow Creek Live), a live recording from a performance at the Thought Lot (www.thethoughtlot.rocks) in Shippensburg, was recorded by Ted Rager of Rager Studio (www. ragersound.com), with Walter again doing the engineering and production side of the work. This live album will be released later this year. Inspiration for lyrics comes from the life experiences each member of Hallow Creek has had. Both have had their share of ups and downs, and it was these experiences that made for ample lyric material. Relationships are no strange topic to the music, but neither is social commentary or the voicing of being the underdog. Boo’s lyrics, as he is the predominant lyric writer, evoke much that the working individual can understand. With Walter’s arrangement s and technical side bringing structure to the finished product, their music is consistent either recorded or live. While they have not ruled out expanding the band to include a July, 2017
drummer, additional guitar or bass player, the formula for now is the musical chemistry of two like minds.
It was at a recent Gettysburg Rocks show that A. G. of Exit Hibernation Media (www.exithibernationmedia.com) met the guys of Hallow Creek, and he chose to help them with A/R and promotional efforts. One photo shoot with them at Little Round Top in Gettysburg on a warm March day resulted in an impromptu show for over fifty people at the castle monument on top the hill. Many folks expressed interest in a CD, autograph, and fan photo, which proved to be a great experience for everyone. Other photo shoots, interviews, and shows were put in motion, helping to build the band’s momentum. Exit Hibernation Media helped to bridge Hallow Creek to Xvive Audio (http:// www.xviveaudio.com/), which opened the door to their upcoming performances at the Nashville NAMM show in July and NAMM in January of 2018. Other endorsements are now in the consideration phase, which is an exciting component of the behind the scenes side of the music business. Exit Hibernation Media’s strategic communications with national media outlets is helping to grow the band’s music awareness in other markets, opening the doors to shows across the country. Adding the Creek-Ette’s to the promotional mix (promotional models in Hallow Creek tee-shirts) is building the fan base and buzz at live shows, and boosting their merchandising approach has made their advertising and promotional efforts more efficient.

I never like to start an article on a bummer note, but now that we have passed Summer Solstice, daylight will now start to get shorter in the northern hemisphere – all the more reason to get outside and enjoy warm weather live music and soak in that daylight while it lasts! I’ve been doing a lot of that lately…Bluegrass music and the wilderness of the PA Wilds again drew me to last month’s 14th annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival, which took place at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork (north of Renovo), and raised money for the Lupus Foundation of PA. Spanning four days, Smoked Country Jam (SCJ) again presented a wide expanse of bluegrass, folk and Americana musical flavors from more than 20 performing acts on two stages, spanning traditional-leaning groups to inventive performers who stretched genre parameters. One example of the latter category was Boston-based OctoPladd. Featuring four students from Berklee College of Music, OctoPladd roots their sound in traditional string music, but incorporates detailed jazz-styled improvisation and musicality to lift it to a fresh new level. Guitarist/singer Sam Leslie, upright bassist Noah Harrington, violinist Julian Pinelli and mandolinist Ethan Setiewan mixed quirky original compositions with renditions of numbers from Leadbelly, David Grisman, Levon Helm, Townes Van Zandt and more. Also offering a different slant on folk and bluegrass was North Carolina quintet The Midatlantic, who also used acoustic roots music as a launching pad into rock, jazz and even worldbeat flavors, utilizing a variety of instrumentation. Appearing in previous years as a member of Virginia’s Drymill Road, banjoist Robert Mabe brought his self-named group to this year’s SCJ, and introduced a bluegrass-rooted sound laced with intriguing tempo and chord shifts on a mixture of original songs and select covers. Robert’s fiddle player, Patrick McAvinue, also performed as a member of Baltimore’s Charm City Junction, who merged bluegrass music with Irish folk and other flavors. And for just two members strong, Virgin-
ia’s Herb & Hanson – Herb Manila and Michael Hanson – delivered a vibrant, full-band sound as they mixed bluegrass, newgrass, folk, blues and rock flavors. Various SCJ performers offered their own distinctive angles on traditional-flavored bluegrass and folk as well. Perennial Saturday festival headliners The Hillbilly Gypsies again dazzled audiences with their fast-firing style of traditional bluegrass and string music. This group has a new look; recently joining founding couple Trae and Jamie Lynn Buckner are fiddler Ben Townsend, banjo player/guitarist Levi Houston Sanders and upright bass player Ryan Cramer. One of the clear highlights of this year’s SCJ was seeing Jamie Lynn back in action and singing, following her battle with breast cancer earlier this year – she sank full heart and soul into every note she sang! THE PROFESSOR continued,,,, the Hillbilly Gypsies’ finale, as they welcomed multiple guest musicians on stage to bring the event to its jubilant finish. Also showing a more traditional flavor were Florida-based solo performer Mean Mary (Mary James), who demonstrated a hearty voice and fast flair on fiddle and banjo as she offered a southern-tinged variety of bluegrass, folk and blues originals. Their name inspired by the Beatles, Boston’s Lonely Heartstring Band offered melodic bluegrass and folk, displaying colorful vocal harmonies on originals and select cover material from Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and a bluegrass edition of the Beatles’ “Something.” North Carolina’s Town Mountain demonstrated hard-driving string music, blending their bluegrass with a honky-tonk edge. And although I missed their sets, New York’s Bug Tussle also brought a traditional flavor to SCJ. Pennsylvania was well represented at this year’s Smoked Country Jam, with 11 PA-bred groups and performers taking the stage. Although now Nashville-based, Huntingdon County native Doug Forshey showcased his catalog of original folk compositions as well as songs from his new CD collaboration with Chris Strait, called ‘Tied to the Tracks’. Chris and his band, The Crooked Line, joined Doug onstage during his set, and also performed their own sets at SCJ. Chris on guitar and vocals, Steve Buckalew on vocals and violin, “Banjo Bob” Baronner, mandolinist Kevin Briggs and bassist Steve Belcher performed bluegrass/folk-rooted numbers from their just-issued CD, ‘Far From Perfect’. Pittsburgh’s Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers demonstrated their fast and fiery brand of folk and bluegrass, showcasing songs from both their new studio album ‘White Lightning Road’ and their live album ‘Sleepy Creek Harfest’. Altoona’s Mama Corn introduced string music from their newest album, ‘Live and Learn’, along with older originals and grassed-up takes on numbers from CSNY, Manfred Mann and more. Another festival favorite, Harrisburg’s Colebrook Road honored traditional bluegrass flavors as they did original songs and select covers, and welcomed several guests on stage along the way. Centre region favorites Grain mixed bluegrass and roots music with their blend of original songs and spins on numbers from Tom Petty, John Hartford, Chris Isaak and more. Formed last year, Jersey Shore’s Bronze Alley Boxer made their SCJ debut; singer/guitarist Dan Murray, mandolin/fiddle player Watson Thompson, guitar/mandolin/ banjo player Ben Griswold and upright bass player Derrick Cunningham blended original songs with folk, bluegrass and blues classics from John Prine, the Stanley Brothers, Bob Dylan, Whiskeytown and more. Another Berklee College of Music student, Clearfield County’s Megan McGarry, demonstrated a clear, vibrant voice and talent on fiddle and banjo as she performed original compositions, accompanied by her father Chris on guitar. And although I didn’t get to witness their full performances, Chambersburg’s Mountain Ride, Danville’s Strawberry Ridge and Lock Haven’s Lockport Drifters also represented the Keystone State at this year’s Smoked Country Jam. And Pennsylvania’s heritage was represented at SCJ again via the annual Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest, as this year’s three winners were honored. Third-place winner Doug Forshey performed his song about Mount Union’s 1,000 Steps landmark, “Ledges Quarry Blues,” and first-place winner Chris LaRose of Lock Haven played his winning entry, “Pepper Hill.” Although not present to perform it live, the Hanover-based duo of Mike Blottenberger and Robert Shuey captured second place with their song, “Kissing Bridges.” I attended other outdoor events as well…One of the towns nationwide that lays claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day, Boalsburg again marked the holiday with a variety of activities, including live music and the day-ending Memorial Day Service at Boalsburg Cemetery. I saw several performers on the downtown Diamond stage, arriving for the last few songs of Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats’ set. Singer “Miss Melanie” Morrison Zeigler’s voice was in excellent form as she sank total heart and joy into renditions of Cyrill Neville’s “Brother John” and – in salute to the nation’s fallen servicemen – a beautifully reverent read of “Amazing Grace.” Next was some 1950s-era a cappella doo wop courtesy of State College’s Rama-Lama. Five members strong, Rama-Lama blended voices, harmonies and steady timing as they sang early rock and pop hits such as The Monotones’ “The Book of Love,” the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” Danny & the Juniors’ “At the Hop,” Thurston Harris’ “Little Bitty Pretty One,” The Penguins’ “Earth Angel” and more. And Urban Fusion closed out the afternoon with their upbeat mixture of jazz, funk and R&B sounds. THE PROFESSOR continued,,,, and flute, guitarist Jeff Gibble, bassist Rob Gardner, keyboardist Chip Lovette and violinist Carl Ector – on several instrumental fusion jams, along with fresh renditions of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone,” a Latin-edged spin on George Gershwin’s “Summertime” and more. Summerhill borough in Cambria County celebrated its 125th anniversary last month with a gala weekend featuring plenty of live music. I caught the Saturday entertainment, starting with Johnstown’s KB & the Crew. KB – Kenny Biter – sings and plays guitar, with Dave Knobloch on bass and Stan Korus on drums. They mixed up a variety of classic and new country, plus some rock’n’roll favorites thrown in. They prompted some dancing from young and older folks alike as they did tunes from Johnny Cash, Jamey Johnson, David Allan Coe, George Jones, Charlie Daniels, CCR and more. I then caught my first look at the sisterly duo of Jill & Leah Gontkovic, who entertained an outdoor wine-tasting party at the Summerhill Firehall. Leah plays acoustic guitar; both sisters sing. They displayed great voices and harmonies on a wide variety of song material from such artists as Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Bill Withers, Johnny Cash, Miranda Lambert, Walk The Moon, Guns N’Roses, Dixie Chicks and more. It wouldn’t be my last time seeing Jill and Leah this day, as both sang during Shades Of June’s nightcap – joining singer/guitarist Ryan Krinjeck, bassist Chris Myer and drummer Jesse August on their uptempo mixture of rock and pop favorites. Shades Of June successfully fired up a robust parking lot dance party to cap the day. The Clarks headlined the kickoff of the Alive @ 5 Summer Concert Series at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum last month. Opening the night was the much-anticipated debut performance of Ten High Five. Comprised of former country favorites the Beer Kegs minus Pistol Peg, Ten High Five – singer/guitarist Mark Simanski, lead guitarist/singer Joe Scott, guitar-
The Clarks ist Brandon Kane, bassist Brad Davis and drummer Steve Holtz – tapped the Beer Keg arsenal of country favorites from Dierks Bentley, John Mellencamp, Eric Church, Pure Prairie League, Chris Stapleton, Eagles, John Michael Montgomery, Randy Houser and more, plus mixed classic rock gems in as well. They provided a few surprises, such as a ska-tinged take on Stealer’s Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You,” a percussion-powered edition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia,” and Mark going full-tilt Robert Plant on the set-ending version of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” Marking 30 years together as a band (with the same original four members), The Clarks are still having fun firing up their signature brand of original rock. Opening with “Snowman,” singer/guitarist Scott Blasey, guitarist/singer Rob James, bassist/singer Greg Joseph and drummer Dave Minarik – joined by keyboard man Skip Sanders, steel player Gary Jacob, and at times by Dave’s son, Noah on guitar – performed plentiful Clarks favorites and mixed some new tunes in along the way. The crowd cheered to Clarks canons like “Born Too Late,” “Mercury,” “Maybe,” “Map to the Stars,” “On Saturday,” “Trampoline” and more. They introduced new songs such as “She’s On Fire” and “What Do You Do.” Highlights included Scott and Rob joking about that ‘girl from IUP’ (Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where the group first formed) who inspired their acoustic favorite “Penny on the Floor,” and the set-closing rendition of “Cigarette,” where Scott launched into a Bob Dylan “Rainy Day Women” midsection and Rob teased a Rush “Working Man” riff at the end. When the crowd demanded more, The Clarks returned to do three more – the ballad “Irene,” “Shimmy Low” and “Better Off Without You” to slam the lid on the night. With construction work on its amphitheater recently completed, Everett’s Tenley Park hosted last month’s annual Great Eastern Arts & Music 16

Festival, which provided a day of arts, vendors, food, refreshments and live music. I arrived just before the Coal Mountain Ramblers took the stage. With members from Bedford County and Baltimore, the Ramblers mixed improvisational acoustic folk and bluegrass sounds with jam band furvor, turning most of their songs into freewheeling excursions with instrumental duels and more. Singer/guitarists Andrew Luttrell and Mark Calhoun, percussionist/singer Tim Custer, Jr. and fiddle/ banjo player Kevin Kutz welcomed festival emcee/organizer Matt Otis on stage late in their set to have fun with a ‘mash-up’ of Dave Mason’s “Feelin’ Alright” into the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower” into the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.” Local high school musical talent next took the spotlight with single-song performances by Shelby Schleinkofer and Morgan Eisenhart, with Nathaniel Maxwell providing keyboard accompaniment. Celebrating the release of their brand new CD So It Goes…, Matt Otis & the Sound next played an exciting set that mixed songs from the new album with Matt’s other original tunes and select cover songs. Matt on vocals and guitar, Kent Tonkin on bass and Charlie McClanahan on drums were joined by guest backing singer Alyssa Smith. After opening with the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer,” the group did songs from the new CD such as “Blinds,” “Melancholia” and more. They also did other Matt originals such as “Karma,” “Make” and “The Most Important Thing.” The group welcomed several guests along the way, including Morgan Eisenhart on backing vocals, Jim Eisenhart on drums and Nathaniel Maxwell on keys. Mixing Numbers With Sounds wrapped up the festival with their hearty and funky grooves. This festival had special meaning for them, as the band members grew up just a short distance from Tenley Park, and they appreciated the improvements to the park and that this event enabled them to celebrate their hometown and give back to the fans that have supported them. After kicking off with Santana’s “Everybody’s Everything” and continuing with a Lipps Inc. “Funkytown”-rooted jam excursion, guitarist/singer Tanner Means, bassist/singer Emmanuel “Man E Funk” Wright, keyboardist Evan Neva and drummer Anthony Diflavis engaged in feverish, heated funky jams with caution-to-the-wind improvisation and intense playing. Mixing Numbers With Sounds gave all on the stage, and it was clear that all four of these musicians were totally invested! And summer concert season is under way at the historic Roxbury Bandshell in Johnstown. The opportunity to perform in the Bandshell last month with my Backyard Rockers bandmates also enabled me to see Somerset acoustic trio Red Paint. Singing and playing multiple instruments, J.D. and Cindy Ross plus percussionist/bassist Mike Kinsella generated a vibrant folk-rock sound as they did a variety of covers and original songs. Both J.D. and Cindy displayed stellar voices with great range and clarity as they swapped acoustic guitar and bass. Cindy also played mandolin and ukulele, and based on his past as frontman for Nixon Pit Crew, I was hoping to see J.D. break out the flute – he did, flavoring the group’s take on Stevie Nicks & Don Henley’s “Leather and Lace,” before launching on a feisty flute solo display that teetered on
the brink of going full Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull. I also enjoyed Red Paint’s creative spins on Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” the ‘dreamy’ double-shot of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” into Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” and the uplifting set-closing rendition of the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” Red Paint also did “Abbasong,” the ‘title’ track off their recently-issued Abigail EP. Indoors, Altoona’s Blair County Convention Center hosted the Legends Of Rock concert during Memorial Day weekend, featuring three former singers for legendary rock bands. Former Foreigner singer Lou Gramm and his band headlined the concert, with former Kansas singer John Elefante and former Journey singer Kevin Chalfant opening; Hybrid Ice served as their backing band. Before a large audience, Hybrid Ice – keyboardist/singer Bob Richardson, singers/guitarists Chris Alburger and Rusty Foulke, bassist Jason Shaffer and drummer Rick Klinger – started with two of their own numbers, “On We Go” and their classic “Magdelene.” Kevin then joined the group to sing several Journey classics – “Separate Ways,” “Only the Young,” “Stone in Love” and “Any Way You Want It.” Kevin then introduced John, who sang “Point of Know Return” and Kansas’ biggest chart hit with him as frontman, “Fight Fire with Fire.” The two singers continued to alternate back and forth with classics from their respective former bands; Kevin sang Journey’s “Be Good to Yourself,” “Lights” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” while John sang “Hold On” and “Dust in the Wind.” For the set finale, both singers joined forces to front on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son.” After the intermission, Lou Gramm appeared with his touring band – guitarist Michael Staertow, rhythm guitarist/saxophonist Scott Gilman, bassist A.D. Zimmer, keyboardist Jeff Jacobs and drummer Rob Mount. Opening with “Long, Long Way from Home,” Lou and his band performed many of the essential Foreigner hits – “Feels Like the First Time,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” “Cold As Ice,” “That Was Yesterday,” “Head Games,” “Dirty White Boy,” Lou’s 1987 solo hit “Midnight Blue,” “Double Vision” and “Juke Box Hero.” He dedicated the hit “I Want to Know What Love Is” to a couple in the audience who was celebrating an anniversary, and Scott took the spotlight with his fiery sax soloing on “Urgent.” When the audience demanded an encore, the band returned to fire off Free’s “All Right Now” as a prelude, leading into Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded” to end the night. Los Lobos was among several marquee acts to visit State College’s State Theatre last month. Opening the night, The Stratoblasters lit up the room with a dazzling display of Texas blues-rock firepower. This night featuring renowned Texas guitarist Jimmy Wallace, Jerry Don Branch on guitar and lead vocals, bassist Mike Holmes and drummer Mike Gage; The Stratoblasters came on strong from the get-go with a spirited set, mixing original songs with blues and blues-rock standards. Opening with Freddie King’s “Living in the Palace of the King,” The Stratoblasters showcased scorching guitars and fiery vocals, lifting each number to an intense high. Highlights were numerous, including a feisty rendition of T-Bone Walker’s “T-Bone Shuffle,” and a rendition of Storyville’s “Good Day for the Blues” that escalated into a powerful edition of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Performing electric this night, Los Lobos followed with their performance. For those who only know the group from their chart-topping 1987 remake of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” Los Lobos provided a comprehensive display of their wide-ranging musical scape; mixing elements of rock, blues, folk, country, Tex-Mex, Latin and other flavors. Singer/guitarist Cesar Rosas, guitarist/accordionist/singer David Hidalgo, sax player/keyboardist Steve Berlin, bassist Conrad Lozano, guitarist Louis Perez and drummer Enrique Gonzalez mixed multi-flavored songs from throughout their career. From their own arsenal of songs, Silvertung did popular radio tracks like “Never Too Late,” “Coming Alive,” “Deja Vu,” “The Pawn” and more. Speed established a quick rapport with the fans and never let up, keeping these folks involved with the show. Silvertung even took the show to one table of ladies who wouldn’t get up from their table, prying “Go away!” choruses from them during a version of Godsmack’s “Whatever.” And with Chris Cornell passing just days before, Silvertung saluted him with an “Outshined” jam toward night’s end. Lancaster hard rockers Time Bomb visited The Arena in State College during Memorial Day weekend. Guitarist Brian Gates was in the group’s earliest edition in the late 1980s, before they disbanded in 1990 and reformed in 2000. Joining Brian in Time Bomb’s current edition is singer Tas Journey, bassist Todd Williams and drummer Louis Vera. Steve Berlin of Los Lobos porated a Rascals “Good Lovin’” midsection. Southern Culture On The Skids (SCOTS) last month returned to western PA for the third time in the past 13 months, this time performing at Pittsburgh’s Rex Theater. After Cleveland-based country-punkabilly artists the Whiskey Daredevils opened the night, SCOTS quickly set up gear and the party was on! Starting with their stormy surf-rock instrumental salute to Link Wray, “Skullbucket,” the group launched their fun show of southern-themed surf rock, rockabilly and country-flavored fare, with their trademark brand of humor thrown in. Singer/guitarist Rick Miller, singer/bassist Mary Huff and drummer Dave Hartman mixed established song favorites with new tunes from their recently-issued album The Electric Pinecones. They instantly had the crowd dancing and grooving as they did favorites such as “Voodoo Cadillac,” “Liquored Up and Lacquered Down,” “Mojo Box,” “House Of Bamboo,” “Too Much Pork for Just One Fork,” “Banana Pudding,” “Dirt Track Date” and many

Along the way, the group did tunes off the new album such as “Dirt Road,” “Freak Flag,” “Waiting On You” and “Gray Skies.” SCOTS brought audience members onstage to demonstrate their moves on the hit “Camel Walk,” before serving fried chicken to the audience during “8 Piece Box.” When the crowd called for more, SCOTS answered with three more songs: “Daddy Was a Preacher But Mama Was a Go-Go Girl,” “Cheap Motels” and the stormy surf rock finisher “Greenback Fly.” Baltimore’s Silvertung rocked the stage of The After Dark in Clearfield in late May. Altoona metal rockers Fyre began the night with a strong set, performing numbers off their recently-completed debut recording. Silvertung then brought their full fury and intensity for the entire set, making it count for the folks in attendance. PA MUSICIAN MAGAZINE CD REVIEWS Reviewed by Jim Price MISS MELANIE & THE VALLEY RATS – TWELVE THIRTY ONE (no label) After first hearing Twelve Thirty One, the fourth offering from Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats (or any of their other CD’s for that matter), it is hard not to conclude that group namesake and singer “Miss Melanie” Morrison Zeigler is the happiest woman in the world (or at least the PA music scene). Nobody exudes as much pure joy through their singing as Melanie does on many of Twelve Thirty One’s dozen tracks. Her voice freely lifts, soars, intensifies and relaxes; revealing the flavor of her soul at any given moment. She seizes the moment and refuses to let go of it on the disc-opening original song “You Ain’t Gonna Steal My Shine,” one of several tracks recorded live during a performance at Franco’s Lounge in Williamsport. The group’s romping shuffle rhythm provides the launching pad for Melanie to musically proclaim her preferences from the male half of the species on “What I Need,” and she heartily gives the heave-ho to someone who wronged her on “The End of You.” Melanie can be tender as well, evidenced by her calmer tones on “Don’t You Ever Untie This Knot,” her pleas for another chance on the title track “Twelve Thirty One” and her reflective mood on “I Lost the Best Thing.” Each of the Valley Rats shines as well – Mark Ross’ guitar work is tasteful and clean throughout the album, perfectly complementing and supporting each piece. Rev James Harton displays stellar work on keyboards, with his prominent accordion work especially fleshing out and adding mood to several numbers. And drummer Chris Coyne gently propels the numbers along with just the right rhythmic push. A surprise highlight of the album is when the group reboots the Beatles double-shot of “Help” and “Oh Darling” into slow, smooth soul pieces; the group also offers a samba-tinged read of Robert Cray’s “Phone Booth.” The recording and mix capture the radiance of the group’s performances, enabling each to shine brightly and seize the moment. Twelve Thirty One further establishes Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats as a truly special force on the Keystone State music scene, and the performances here will leave listeners awestruck and amazed. YOUNG LUNGS - RESET (no label) Young Lungs’ story began in 2015, when three musicians from central PA relocated to Pittsburgh to create music and advance their music career. After some initial singles and an EP, Young Lungs has released their first full-length album, Reset. The group – singer, pianist and ukulelist Meg Wills, guitarist Ty Miller and bassist Scott Ciambotti – crafts concise, punchy and catchy songs that blend components of punk, pop and indie rock over Reset’s 11 tracks. The riffs and melodies are infectious, and the group’s delivery is tight and precise. Meg’s performance is front and center; her voice rings with smoothness, power and clarity, as she sings well-constructed lyrical themes about life, love and hope. From her strummed ukulele lead-in, Meg expresses the desire for harmony and happiness on the disc-opener “Killin’ Me.” She explores her own personality on “Forget Today,” while encouraging others to dig for their own truth on the high-powered “Scream It Out.” Meg also reflects on past mistakes on “False Promises” and “Battle Cry,” addresses youthful restlessness on “Break Me,” and diagnoses her own life’s direction on “Reality” and the title track “Reset. Restart.” And she crafts a tender piano ballad of devotion on “Stay the Night.” The song arrangements are simple yet clever, with Ty’s forceful riffs driving the melodies along and setting the table for Meg’s potent vocal delivery. Recorded, produced, mixed
and mastered by Anthony Santonocito at Westfall Recording Company in Austin, Texas, Reset sounds crisp and concise; letting the performances shine and win the day with minimal studio bells and whistles. The end result is a strong, catchy and action-packed album; Reset establishes Young Lungs as a band with a focus and fresh direction, and offers punchy, infectious rock that will hook and hold listeners. GRANATI BROTHERS – THE SHOW (Atomic Records) Four decades ago, Pittsburgh’s Granati Brothers made it to the major leagues, signing with and recording an album with A&M Records, touring in support of Van Halen, and opening concerts for Heart, Peter Frampton and Boston. They also went on to sign and record an album with Atlantic Records in the mid-1980s. Although mainstream superstardom ultimately eluded them, the Granati Brothers have continued to enjoy regional popularity and success, and have issued their first studio album in 13 years, The Show. The brothers – Hermie Granati on vocals and keys, Joe Granati on vocals, bass and keys, and David Granati on vocals and guitar – worked with Grammy-winning producer Jimmy Hoyson and famed drummer Gregg Bissonette on the album. The Show finds the brothers continuing to generate the catchy blend of classic-styled rock and pop that first earned them national attention. The songs are tight and concise with punchy melodies, strong vocals and harmonies, guitar and keyboard solo highlights and more. Leading off the album, the title track “The Show” touts the joys of live performing in front of a crowd, and builds to a fast-charging finish where David and Hermie trade off guitar and organ solos. “Shake It Up” goes for the gusto and fires up the group’s funkier side, fueled by Hermie’s strong organ riffs. On the milder side, Hermie encourages listeners to keep the faith on the acoustic-geared “Keep Hope Alive,” while David sings a tender ode to his son on the George Harrison-rooted “My Heart.” The Granati Brothers upgrade some former numbers – giving a broader mix to “It Was You,” which appeared on their 1979 G-Force album with A&M; and reprising the disco-tinged “I Like It Like That.” The group rocks hard on “Are You Listening” and “You Can’t Get Me Down,” and pleads to keep the nation’s young people off the battlefields on the disc-closer “The Only War.” The performances are solid; all three Granatis can still capably carry a tune, and their vocal and instrumental chops are as sharp as ever. Recorded, mixed and produced at David Granati’s Maplewood Studios, The Show sounds clean and polished, allowing the songs and performances to shine brightly. The Show shows that the Granati Brothers still have the spark to create catchy, vibrant rock music, and the album should appeal to a broad spectrum of listening tastes.
