‘Twas the month before Christmas and all over the state, people were in a hurry, to make that big date. While rushing around town, be sure to stop in to all of your local supporters of the scene you have found. Run over to Carlisle and swing into Woodshed guitars. Say hi to Chris Dellaporta and see what treasures he has found, ‘cause you may just find something for that particular sound. If the treasure you seek is not in this place, then just bop over to see Ed Nezbit at the old Noteworthy Guitars place. Get some strings, check out the axes, you never know what’s hanging on all these racks, that is. If you’re looking for vintage, Player’s Exchange has you covered. Scott’s always looking for the finest of what he can discover. If your sleigh takes you away just a little further south, then head over to see Jerry on George Street in York, he is no slouch. So much stuff hanging on the walls, packed in the corners, just waiting for your sleigh to roll up and make a purchase. Heading further east, you will find what you seek, over in Mt Joy at Guitars on Main with Robert Putt and his beast. Say hi to his puppy and have him put on a demo, he has such fine wares you will need to be mellow. Head off into the country, just a little down the road, you will find Creter Guitar Shop in Jonestown with all the things of dreams you have come to know. If you’re looking for fancy pickups such as Duncan, Dimarzio, custom colors galore, then Mike’s Music in Harrisburg has you covered from the walls to the floor. For a Northern expedition, looking for something just right, stop in to School House Music and see what it’s about for the night. Then fly down east to Guitar Villa, get a custom built acoustic, trade in the old axe, and on the way home pick up a wreath and some egg nog, maybe some snacks. Lots of treasures hidden right on your way, remember to stop and see what they say. You will get better service, gain some knowledge and you might end up with new friends and acquaintances . Christmas is the time and the reason for the season, you will find what you need, with just a little seeking. Well that is interesting; my computer just switched to green and red text. Too much Christmas I guess. That or it’s just getting tired. This month in live music we have some great shows and benefits happening. To start off the Black Water Greed cover photo by Rachel Rocks
Darkes performing December 7th at the Conewago in Manchester month, we have two SPACE-FESTS. Yes, two! One on the 1st at the Tourist Inn and the follow up on the 8th at the River City Blues Club. Come out and support Eric (SPACE) Dengler. He has fought a hard battle and needs some support from the music community. The Chrome Hearts are heading south this month to get some more exposure. They will be at the Park Inn/Blarney’s on the 7th and then down at The Burning Bridge Tavern on the 28th. I was really surprised by the new Cd they put out. They have a great country/rock/Supersuckers sound and I can’t wait to get a chance to check them out live. Club XL is having another action packed month. The River, 97.3 Toys for Tots is Saturday, December 1st with a line up you can’t miss; The Famous, The Jellybricks, Time Bomb, The Martini’s, and a Syn ‘D’ Cats Reunion! The 13th is The 2nd Annual Horton’s Hayride with you guessed it, Rev. Horton Heat. On the 22nd it’s Back In Black with Lead Foot and a special debut by OUTTA The Cellar, a new RATT tribute Band at Club XL. Down at The Racehorse Tavern we have Steel on the 7th and Wind Up Toy (Alice Cooper Tribute) on the 21st which looks to be something new and entertaining. At the end of the month, a local favorite, The Blues Vultures will return on the 29th. So much to see and do this month, enjoy it all. We at the PA Musician Magazine wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Remember to spread Christmas cheer for all to hear. The gift of music is one that should never be forgotten.

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
The last article of 2018! This year has definitely been one heck of an adventure! So many emotions and roller coasters of feelings.. Thank you all for putting up with all my screaming and crying and hanging on for the ride! Josh is doing an amazing job as “THE BOSS”. Mom is also doing an amazing job at letting Josh run the show. Thank you all so much for continuing to support the PA Musician Magazine and most importantly my family. It’s crazy thinking about all of the things in life this magazine has seen me through. I’ve been writing my article now for 13 years! That’s 156 deadlines. It’s time like these I wish I kept a better ledger of how many bands I’ve seen, one thing I know.. it’s been A LOT, and I’ve made so many amazing friends along
the way! I have to admit I was looking forward to retirement, but as Josh is finishing up his 6 month anniversary, and I look back on just the past 6 months, I can’t believe everything I would’ve missed if he didn’t step up and take over. So thanks big bro! I love you oh so much!!! Oh, and a little side note it’s Josh’s birthday month!! If you can take a minute and send some birthday love to Josh at joshnoll@pamusician.net and let him know how much you appreciate his efforts to continue to bring you the PA Musician Magazine month after month, I’m sure he’d appreciate it. Now on to the music… This month starts with an adventure down to the Union House for the Jess Zimmerman Band. I’ve heard from several people that I should check out the Jess Zimmerman Band and I’d have to say they definitely lived up to the hype. They played some kick a** country that definitely got the boots and the booties on the dance floor. They just released a CD called “Red” back in August and it is definitely a big hit amongst their fans. Sometimes it seemed like they got more people on the dance floor for

their originals than their covers which is a very odd but marvelous thing! To see so many people up dancing and singing along must be so energizing for the band! On a side note, I’m very sad to say that I accidentally deleted all of the pictures I took of the Jess Zimmerman Band and the packed Union House, but I will definitely be back and shoot you guys again soon!! The next night out was a long one at the 717 Entertainment’s Morning Star Festival at HMAC. I’m not sure how many years Nick Myers has been hosting this festival, but one thing is for sure, Nick knows what he’s doing! Super Bob was the big headliner, but there was plenty of amazing talent supporting them. With the two different stages at HMAC there was always someone to listen to all night long. The first band I got there in time to hear was our new advertiser, Defiant. Defiant is a hard rock/metal band from Mechanicsburg. For only being the 2nd band of the night I was impressed with how many people were already there moshing and singing along. Defiant is breaking into the local scene with a vengeance and they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. They have a big show coming up on December 10th at The Chameleon opening for Otep and Illusions of Grandeur! Check out their ad in this issue for even more details and to find out how you can snag these guys for your venue or private event! The next band I’ve crossed paths with a few times, VoidHidden. These guys are also from right here in central PA and had a home court advantage with plenty of fans out to support their original hard rock music. They are a blast to watch on stage! All of them have an amazing stage presence and Austin’s voice is clear and distinctive which allows you to really connect with their lyrics. It was a great show and definitely kept the good vibes going on a great night for local music. The rest of the night I was too lazy to go up and down the steps and too busy talking to my friends, I only saw the bands playing up in the Capital Room. It was awesome chatting with the one and only “Fantastic Joe,” a local vlogger who is out supporting music and vlogging about local music every chance he gets! City of the Weak from Minnesota took the stage next. Nick does an amazing job at finding these crazy talented touring bands and building them a show. City of the Weak had a cute little lady as their lead singer, but don’t let Stef fool you, she has one heck of a set of pipes! They definitely made some new fans after their show, including me! I will be keeping an eye on them to see when they will be coming back to the area. Next up was another advertiser, Suicide Puppets. As if they alone aren’t creepy enough they just had to have some masked creepier dude crawling around on the stage freaking anyone out that was brave enough to come close to the stage! They have been rocking area stages as long as I’ve been writing this article continued on page 9...

so I’ve had the privilege of seeing them a few times throughout the years and every time I see them I can’t believe how they suck you in with their music and melt your face off! Their music is very addicting and once you see them they will have you crawling back for more! They have a big show coming up December 22nd at the Tourist Inn. You can check out their full schedule and find out all the gory details in their ad in this issue. The final band for me of the night Super Bob hit the stage on time and was definitely ready to rock! Super Bob is a National touring band, they’ve been touring the US for over 7 years, playing on average 200 shows a year! Nick is always great at hooking them up with a show when they are passing through the area. Matt and Adam are still killing it out front, talk about a show! Their stage presence is intense! They get their long hair flying and it’s like it shoots adrenaline out to the crowd. Since I saw them last, they have a new drummer, Michelle. I couldn’t believe how this girl takes over a drum kit! Her hair is also flying in all directions and she bangs the crap out of those drums! As usual Super Bob was very entertaining and a great band to see again. Kudos again to 717 Entertainment for putting on one heck of a show. Give them a “Like” on Facebook and keep an eye on all of the amazing shows that 717 Entertainment brings to town. The following weekend started one of the busiest and craziest weeks I’ve had in a long time. It all started with Calling Off Doug at the Mechanicsburg GMan. Calling Off Doug is a dance party band from right here in central PA. With Stephanie holding down the lead vocals, I swear that girl can cover anything. The whole band does a great job backing her up with their vocals and instruments. Craig even steps up sometimes and takes over the lead vocals so Stephanie can dance along and enjoy the music! They cover multiple genres and generations of music! You never know what to expect out of them next, but one thing for sure is, you’re going to love it! So get your dancing shoes on and get out there and have a great time! They’ll be partying it up at Ted’s on the 15th this month, plus they have a few other shows lined up too. Check out their schedule in this issue for all of the details, and do yourselves and your regulars a favor, and get Calling Off Doug booked at your venue today! The next day it was finally time for Observe the 93rd’s CD Release Party for their latest album, “Alive” at Club XL. After
Tyler of Observe the 93rd at Club XL
they released their video for “Cartoons” which is only one of their amazing new songs, I was very excited to hear more. Before OT93 took the stage, they had Hot and Dangerous and Gas Station Disco kick off the show. Hot and Dangerous is exactly that, they are a new band on the scene and they are ready to get this party started! Erica’s vocals are killer and they all did an amazing job at getting this night started. I’m sure we will be seeing much more of Hot and Dangerous very soon. Gas Station Disco stepped on the stage next and the party got even crazier! It’s been years since I’ve seen Gas Station Disco playing things other than their rockin’ originals, so I was shocked to hear some of the music they covered, and even more shocked checking out their dance moves. These guys have definitely been out rockin’ around the USA up and down the East Coast and have gained lots of experience along the way. OT93 made great choices of bands to kick off their CD Release Party! People were already up front dancing and singing along. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any crazier, it was time for Observe the 93rd to take the stage. OT93 took the stage and everyone packed to the front. They were a little nervous for setting up their show at such a large venue, but I think they even shocked themselves with the great turn out. It was so refreshing to see so many people out supporting a local original band! OT93 took full advantage of the big screen behind them and played their video for Cartoons while they played the song. It was a cool idea and you could really see how the music tied in with the video. (Their video already has over 7,000 views in just over 1 month!) They played through their entire new album. I was impressed to see how each song was filled with such emotion and meaning. I know I’ve already said it, but the growth that OT93 has had as musicians is amazing. Their release was very well promoted and played! I’m glad I could be there to check it out. Do yourselves a favor, check out their video and listen to their music, and when you hear how much you love it, order their CD and stream their music and help a local band fulfill their dreams! Since shows are usually over around 12:30 at Club XL I decided to zoom over and catch the tail end of Steel at Double K. I haven’t seen these guys the last few times they were in the area, so I wanted to stop by and say Hi. With the bike swap happening at the farm show the Double K was packed with out of town bikers that were of course loving Steel’s music. It’s always a blast partying with Steel’s regular crowd, but when I see people rockin’ out with Steel for the first time, it always makes me happy! These guys deserve all the love they can possibly get. Mark from Ebenezer Screw was there to enjoy the show and of course they had him up to play a couple songs. Steel is never afraid to invite musicians up to join in the fun. It was a great way to end the night just dancing, laughing, and head banging with some of my closest friends. Steel has a few shows lined up this month, the 7th they will be at Racehorse Tavern and the 8th they will be playing as part of Space’s Benefit at River City. You can check out their full ad in this issue for all their shows and all of the details! You can also check out their website, www.steelrocks. com. The following night was Thanksgiving Eve! The biggest party night of the year! I started out early at River City for Nate Myers and the Aces. I was there so early I was able to catch their opening act, Acoustic Stew. They don’t play out very often, but
Stop in for dinner, check out our beer selections, and then stick around for the Area’s greatest entertainment!

when they do play their fans show up! The room was packed and was standing room only. Acoustic Stew was way more laid back than Nate Myers and the Aces, but it was a nice calm way to start the night. When Nate Myers and the Aces took the stage the dance floor quickly got busy and people were ready to get their back porches swinging! Trent was a guest piano man tonight, he’s always a great addition to any show. I love having keys in any band, it just adds so much to the sound. Nate and his vast array of harmonicas rocked the house as usual. Nate Myers and the Aces play the type of music you can easily just sit and enjoy or get up and dance to the beat. It was great to finally see these guys rockin’ the stage again. River City is a great place to see a band with plenty of free parking and just a cool venue with a unique vibe. If you want to get your back porch swinging with Nate Myers and the Aces check out their website, www.natemyers.com to check out their full schedule. I heard that Club XL across the street was absolutely packed for The Struts so I decided to literally run across the street and check it out. It was PACKED. One of the best crowds I’ve ever seen in Club XL. I was surprised at how many songs I recognized and knew because I didn’t think I knew The Struts, but obviously there are plenty of people that are very familiar with their music and were having a great time. Club XL had a VERY continued on page 10.

crazy schedule for the entire Thanksgiving Holiday. It started with The Struts Wednesday, then Kix on Friday, and The Sharks with a Metron Reunion on Saturday. All three nights were INSANE! I’m really hoping that all of these people that came out will now know how awesome Club XL is and they will continue to come out for shows on a more regular basis. Seeing the large crowds of people out enjoying live music helps me realize that there are still people that will come out and support live music! Friday I was lucky I got a nice nap and then I was ready to head back to Club XL for the Kix show. I got to the show in time for Ever Rise. I missed most of Medusa’s Disco, but Ever Rise did a great job getting the party started. I think everyone loved when they covered some AC/DC towards the end of their set. It got the crowd ready to get our faces rocked off by Kix! Shortly after Kix took the stage Steve let us know that “Blow My Fuse” is celebrating it’s 30th Birthday, so in honor of that, they decided to re-release the “Blow My Fuse” album from the bottom to the top and they are calling the Re-Release “Fuse 30 Reblown”. When he asked what everyone thought of the idea the crowd erupted in cheers so I guess they thought it was a good idea. Some people were bummed they weren’t playing their newer music, but the die hard fans thought it was the best thing ever! I personally thought it was pretty cool, because the “old Kix” is what I grew up with and what I love. I didn’t stick around all night because I was personally over a huge crazy crowd, but when I left there were still plenty of people rockin’ the night away and having a great time. Since the night was still early I decided to stop at one more place, Chick’s for Element 22. Jeff and Darrell were actually playing with a full band, so they had Chick’s rockin and the dance floor was hopping! Their last set is always the ‘All Request Hour’.. they do their best to play any songs that the crowd requests. It’s always a big hit and when people hear what they want to hear, they have no choice but to get up and dance! It was hard to believe so many people were staying out so late on Black Friday. I thought the clubs would be calmer because everyone would be exhausted, but maybe I was the only exhausted one. Jeff and Darrell and E22 acoustic are looking for more venues to play, so if you want some great entertainers that really know how to read a crowd and have a wild time, give these guys a call! Before I go I can’t NOT mention, Small Town Titans. They released their own unique version of The Grinch and it is spreading across the world! Small Town Titans were celebrating 8,000 Facebook likes on Nov. 17th and today, Nov. 26th they have 75,000 likes!! They also celebrated when their video was viewed 10 MILLION times and when I saw the post 13 HOURS later it was already at 11.5 MILLION views! All of their videos on their Facebook page are now over 50K views and climbing rapidly! Great job guys!! I got my eye on you and I can’t wait to see your music and your band SOAR!! Well that’s all the bands for this month! I think that was enough… There are so many super amazing shows this month! Please check out the magazine from front to back and top to bottom and make sure you don’t miss a show. I will be super busy celebrating birthdays and holidays this month, but I’m hoping to get out there whenever I can. There are benefits galore for Toys for Tots and for Space, the drummer from Penntera and Maiden America has been kickin’ cancers a**, but in the process he’s piled up quite a few bills, this is a great time to get out there and support music and our very own local musician! Check out another great show I’m going to do my best to see, a 3 Band Mayhem on December 22nd at Club XL: 9pm, Outta the Cellar a brand new Ratt tribute band is making their debut, Leadfoot at 10pm and finally Back in Black at 11pm! It looks like it’s going to be another rockin’ month at Club XL. Happy Birthday to my son Mason who turns the BIG 13! I finally have two teenagers in the house, oh joy… Happy Birthday to my beautiful Mommy on the 18th, and my Big Bro, aka Jammin Josh, THE BOSSMAN, on the 19th! So many birthdays and only so many days to celebrate. I hope everyone had a marvelous Thanksgiving and has a super fabulous Christmas as well. If you see me Out and About, please stop me and say Hi, or hit me up at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. Don’t forget to continue to tag us @PAMusician or #pamusician. Thanks to all of our 500+ followers on Instagram. Right now it seems they are still letting me see band info on there so if you haven’t “Followed” us yet, please do so, so I can follow you back! NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman
Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Last month began with two separate shows on the same night within the same venue. Lancaster’s Chameleon Club hosted Sebastian Bach of Skid Row on the main floor and had punk band Teenage Bottlerocket downstairs in the Lizard Lounge. Sebastian Bach sang all the hits fans would expect “Slave to the Grind,” “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” Teenage Bottlerocket were amazing, playing such a small room before joining Descendents on tour. TBR have been around since 2000 and they play so fast, which is very reminiscent of the Ramones. It’s that time of year where National shows are less prevalent than summer tours. Thankfully there were plenty of local bands this past month in Harrisburg playing live. The Give Take, Gonz, Anthrophobia and Super High Tech Jet Fighters all put on great shows at Club XL and JB Lovedrafts, which by the way is a fantastic venue. Its been years since Smalls bar closed downtown and now it seems Harrisburg has got a good punk venue again with JB Lovedrafts. Club XL had some major shows in November including the return of England’s The Struts on the 21st and the annual visit from KIX on Black Friday the 23rd. Both shows had huge crowds and Club XL keeps improving bringing bigger and better shows. The highlight show of the month was The Menzingers at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer on Nov 24. This band formed in 2006 in Scranton, PA but have relocated to the city of Philadelphia. They just completed a Fall tour of the entire U.S. with 22 shows in 1 month. The Menzingers do have one last show this year with their annual NEPA Holiday Show in Scranton on Dec 22. The band donates all proceeds to benefit youth art and music programs in NEPA. The Menzingers have released five studio albums, with the latest After The Party released in February 2017 on Epitaph records. Hershey Concerts have already begun to announce shows for the Summer 2019 Series. June 8th - Ozzy Osbourne and Megadeth. June 13th - Carrie Underwood. July 6th - New Kids On The Block - MixTape Tour with Salt N Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Tiffany, & Debbie Gibson. Aug 18th - Backstreet Boys.
There are rumors of possible shows by Metallica, Luke Bryan, KISS, Jason Aldean and Pink at Hersheypark Stadium. NATIONAL NEWS: The Rolling Stones are bringing their No Filter tour to U.S. stadiums in 2019. “It’s a thrill when we play stadiums in the States,” Mick Jagger said, “the energy is always amazing!” Adds Keith Richards, “I’ve always loved playing the states. It’s a great crowd.” The 13-show tour will mark the band’s first extended run of shows in the U.S. since 2015’s Zip Code tour. The Stones spring let tour of Europe grossed $116 million, proving the band is absolutely still one of the biggest draws in the world. Drummer, Charlie Watts, will turn 78 years old before the 2019 tour concludes. Jagger stated he never thinks about stopping. “I’m thinking about what the next tour is, I’m not thinking about retirement.” The Rolling Stones visit: May 31 – Washington, D.C. @ FedExField and June 4 – Philadelphia, PA @ Lincoln Financial Field Joe Perry of Aerosmith felt short of breath after joining Billy Joel on stage at Madison Square Garden. Paramedics backstage gave the 68-year-old guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to the hospital. Perry recently tweeted to fans, “Doing well, thanks for the love and support.” Perry is expected to return to the road for a solo tour this month.
U2 just completed their ‘Experience + Innocense: tour’ on Nov. 13 after six months grossing $126.2 million in sales. The iconic Irish band sold-out over 59 performances in 30 arenas in the U.S. and Europe. The final ticket count from the tour hit 927,034. With those totals, the band is on track to rank among continued on page 12...

Megadeth will open all shows. Osbourne recently played Allentown on Aug. 30 selling 8,336 tickets and grossing $761,332. Ozzy will play Hersheypark Stadium on June 8. KISS’s “End Of The Road” farewell tour capping off a 45year career has announced the initial 44 arena dates of the North American leg. This is not the first time KISS has said goodbye, as the group did a farewell tour with its original lineup in the early 2000s, but Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons decided to keep the moniker and act alive afterward. KISS kept ticket prices between $35 and $85 that tour and gross more than $61.6 million. KISS will play Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo March 29 and Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena March 30. BLACK WATER GREED – ‘Waking Up the World Through Music’
By Rachel Rocks Black Water Greed launched as a force in the music industry in Lancaster, PA in 2012. Black Water Greed, whose name was stumbled upon while tossing about song titles, is now comprised of JJ Tyson; drums, Michael Mundy; lead vocals, and Ios (Andy) Patzer; guitars. Cumulatively, Black Water Greed creates a sound that stands in a category of its own. They refer to their music as “classy rock” – which is a marriage of the classic rock from the 70s and 80s, but with a modern vocal sound. Their influences musically run the gamut – from early Grand Funk Railroad to Shinedown.
In order to grow their presence, they enlisted their devoted fanbase to help spread the word, as well as blasting it across various social media platforms and diligently submitting their music to internet radio stations. Additionally, Tyson travelled overseas to various stop-offs – including Japan, Indonesia, and the UK – where he promoted the project heavily. This strategy worked for BWG, along with direct marketing… in global proportions. BWG garnered the number 1 spot for 5 weeks at the UK FM station Abbey 104 with their first big song, “Walk Away.” The song, authored by Tyson, chronicles an emotionally unhealthy, insecure IOS relationship that is fraught with jealousy and toxicity…where the best thing to do is to walk away. This theme apparently resounded with their dedicated fanbase, as the video for “Walk Away” amassed over 1 million views on YouTube! BWG attributes this impressive milestone to tireless marketing, along with a lot of help from their friends and fans. Even though it’s been a very long six years they are now ready to release their new album, “Circle of Sin”.
are donated to The Wounded Warrior Project. You can listen to “Say Goodbye” and many other songs on their website, www.blackwatergreed.com. Black Water Greed is quick to credit their family and fans for their success – whom they refer to as “Greeders.” They view their fans as the backbone of the band. They wanted to make sure and thank a few people who have helped them along the way, Bassist Bill Kahler is on the album, he’s a long time friend and was willing to be their pre-production bassist. Becky Lastchanzky really helped open doors for them throughout the fashion and music industry. She’s one of the first people that really listened to their music and believed in them, outside of their family. John White did an amazing job on their newest video from their upcoming album, I can’t wait to see it! Robert Narber for doing their Cover Art, and last but certainly not least David Mobley for helping them take their music to the next level. This was a different interview for me because Black Water Greed is strictly focused on their album and they don’t really have shows to promote, but even though you can’t see them in person you can still hear them online at www.blackwatergreed. PATZER • MICHAEL MUNDY • JJ TYSON com. You can also find them on all sity of every song. With a name like Black Water Greed, of your favorite social media, Facebook, Reverbnation, you would expect nothing less. They are just finishing up etc. If you like what you hear they are more than happy some of the mixing and mastering with The Mastering to play their music anytime or anywhere. Give them a Lab, who also worked with The Rolling Stones. They call and get them scheduled at your venue. I can tell you are also working locally with Bobby Gentilo of Right one thing for sure, they will promote the heck out of any Coast Recording. They are hoping to release the album show they play! I know I will be watching closely to see in January, their initial CD Release Party is going to be when their album, “Circle of Sin” is released so I can in Las Vegas! check it out and add it to my collection!
All of their promotion didn’t only pay off in new fans and streams, but they also made some amazing connections in the music scene, one of which is David Mobley, who is now the executive producer on their upcoming album. I pulled this quote from David off of their website, “I am extremely excited and honored to be acting as Co-Producer and Executive Producer for the up and coming super rock group Black Water Greed. I knew from the very first time that I heard their unique sound and writing style that I would one day want to work with them. I got my wish, and now we’re very close to releasing their first major album titled ‘Circle Of Sin,’ with eleven all-new and superbly written and recorded songs that will blow everyone away. A big thanks to JJ, Michael, and Andy for their unbelievable musical talents.”
One thing about Black Water Greed is they are not shy at all about promoting their upcoming album. JJ has been talking to me about it for at least three years, and as soon as he saw the opportunity, he jumped on getting Black Water Greed on the cover. They are very thankful to have been interviewed by multiple radio and tv stations and magazines. They will also be on the cover of ION Indie Magazine based out of Colorado next month, thanks to the publisher Kiki Plesha for promoting them as much as possible. If you want people to know you are out there, you definitely have to promote yourselves and Black Water Greed is doing exactly that!
“Circle of Sin” is not for the weak of heart, it is a very political album which is sure to stir up some conflict, but will have plenty of people connecting with each well written lyric. With “Walk Away” they had a fan write to them and say, you told my whole life story in five minutes! That is their goal with this album, they want people to be able to feel every word and connect with the inten-
BWG doesn’t take their fans or their success for granted and are proponents of “giving back” – especially where this country’s Veterans are concerned. They recognize that music can be a platform to call attention to various causes. To this end, the proceeds from their song “21 Shells Say Goodbye”

HITTING THE ROAD By Michele Kelley
I hope everyone has recovered from their turkey indulgence and is ready for the craziness that December always promises to bring us! November was a hard month for us to get out and see bands with so many things going on, but what we were able to cover some pretty amazing shows. I am continuously surprised by the level of musicianship that our state has to offer. When we started with the magazine, I figured we would cover the best of the best pretty quickly and the rest would be okay bands with an occasional surprise. I am happy to say, I was wrong. Each month is always an adventure and makes me proud to be with the magazine and to be involved in supporting Pennsylvania’s LIVE music scene. I hope that you take the time to look these bands up online, get out to see their shows and buy their music! We were set up to see our first band for November but things did not pan out, so we decided to head over to The Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport to see what was going on. We met up with someone new to us, Keith Kenny. Even though Keith started out in NJ, he told us he really started to break out here in PA and loves playing in our state. Keith is considered by many people as a solo musician but after watching him perform, he is definitely a one-man band and more. If you closed your eyes at one of his shows, you would bet money you were listening to a full band. He does it all, from playing guitar, VOX, suitcase kick drum, banjo, harmonica, singing and layering and looping all while keeping the crowds attention and drawing you in by his
entertaining facial expressions and his stand-out ‘Big Red Suitcase’. Oneman bands have always intrigued me, so much going on and to keep track of, I honestly do not know how they do it. Now, I have seen some pretty incredible one-man bands before, but Keith is a completely different composition. Keith infuses different genres of music from Rock, Metal, Blues & Folk. He did an outstanding job of covering a TOOL song and for a one-man band to pull that off is pretty incredible, in my opinion. He performs mostly his originals, some very comical and others with deep meaning, leaving an impression. Keith has been busy this year releasing his video “Teenage Dream” and touring the UK and the US collecting fans and playing with some amazing, well-known musicians. I think one of the refreshing things I liked most about Keith was that, not knowing him, he could be the guy you’re next to in a venue, talking about anything and everything, waiting to hear the next great thing on stage. He is such a genuine person and you can tell he really loves what he is doing! If you have been following along, last month I mentioned that we caught the end of a really good band called Yam Yam from Harrisburg that played at Little Buffalo’s Music Festival. They released their self-titled album on November 21st at The Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg. The crowd that came to support this band was insane! It was a sold-out show of wall to wall people and they were all having a great time dancing and singing along. As mentioned last month, Yam Yam formed in 2015 and members include Mike Dempsey: Keys, Tom Fuller: Guitar, Tyler Fuller: Drums, Jason Mescia: Sax and Xander Moppin: Bass. They mix Jazz and Funk “Junk” with some really cool R&B groove. I can honestly say these
Yam Yam
guys are among the top talented musicians I have had the pleasure of watching. The amount of people at the release party was a true testament to their musicianship. If you have not seen them yet, you are missing out! You can stream their music on all the major platforms, pick up a digital copy on iTunes or purchase a hard copy through their website at www.yamyamband.com Before Yam Yam hit the stage, we had the pleasure of seeing AMFM: Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement, formally named Steely Jam from Lancaster. They too, were incredible. Often times you see opening bands that are just that, an opening band. Now, I know it was Yam Yam’s night to shine, and they certainly did, but AMFM is not just an opening band. They too are incredible musicians that just seemed to gel together. Rather than AMFM “opening” for Yam Yam it was more like they were warming up the crowd for an insane evening of music. The two bands were equally matched and complimented each other very well. AMFM consists of Andy Mowatt: Guitar, Taylor Wade: Drums, Tuck Ryan; Keys/Vocals, Nate Young: Synth/Vocals, Paul Berry: Tenor Sax and Josh Mulberry: Bass. They have mastered meshing together Jazz, Jam, Rock, Funk, Soul and Blues into one really cool sound. You listen to them by streaming on all the major platforms or pick up your hard copy of their self-titled album from their Facebook page or website at www.andymowatt.com The album is also available on Amazon. The Family Ties kicked off a great night of music on November 23rd at The Bullfrog Brewery. They are listed as an Indie Rock group based out of Williamsport, but what they have going on is pretty special. Brother’s Mike and Gino Caschera started out as an acoustic project in 2010. They then added their father, Mike Caschera III, in 2012 to form ‘The Family Ties”. Their father Mike

may be remembered by some as former member of the 70’s pop band, Spiral Staircase. Along with their growth musically over the years, The Family Ties are a tight five piece band, playing their original songs along with a few covers. The Family Ties released their debut album “Holding on to the Earth” in May this year. The band consists of Mick Caschera III: Vocals, Guitar, Gino Caschera: Drums, Mike Caschera Jr.: Sax, Keys and Vocals, Nick Laylon: Bass and Mike Steppe: Guitar, Harmonica and Vocals. Since 2014, the band has kept these same members and is going strong, touring in PA and NY. They are scheduled to record a full length album in Reading the early part of 2019. Their album is available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and any major streaming platform. You can check out their music videos on YouTube.
Jason Yoder & Caleb Minium
Family Ties Moxie & Rebel played following The Family Ties. They classify themselves as an Indie Rock band and formed in 2011 and band members include Joe Jaser: Guitar, Vocals, Tim Harer: Bass, Chris Hess: Vocals, Guitar, Tim Redka: Keys and Mike Wrench: Drums. It is hard for me to explain the type of music they have created. They embody several types of music from raw punk rock sound to, at times, a chill jam. In my opinion, to classify them into one category would be a mistake. Their show was high energy and at times, emotional charged, and left you intrigued on what was coming next. They have released two albums, a self titled album “Moxie & Rebel” in 2012 and “The Brute in the Brain” in 2014. They have been working on their latest album “You Are Not Alone” that is set to be released February 2, 2019. There music is available on Amazon, Spotify, Google and Apple Music.
At age 11, Stillman enrolled into the renowned Uptown Music Collective, school of music in Williamsport, where he excelled and became the star in many performances. He was noted as the leader of the Youngblood Blues Band, and in 2012 performed in the Youth Showcase at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN; there he earned an award for individual effort. Gabe formed his band in 2015, just after graduating Berklee College of Music, where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Professional Music in just 27 months, just before his 20th birthday. The band quickly gained recognition following performances at the Billtown Blues Festival, the Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival and the Destination Blues Festival. The band won the Billtown Blues Challenge this year for the second time and will be competing in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January, 2019. Besides Gabe’s excellent vocals, he plays guitar like no one I have seen on a local level. He is truly a prodigy and it makes me excited to think of the future he and his band has. Keep an eye on this band. They are going places!
The Gabe Stillman Band A special thank you to my long-time friend Joel at the Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport for making special arrangements for us during a very busy time of year and to Sarah at The Abbey Bar in Harrisburg for letting us come back to cover another show. Thank you to Tom and Michelle at Spyglass for welcoming us back. We are really looking forward to the summer line-up you have coming and will definitely be covering some shows with you guys. And finally, thank you to the cool Que Brew Crew in Selinsgrove. We really enjoyed your establishment and will return to cover some more shows there also. We really enjoyed working with all of you and we love seeing how passionate you all are with supporting LIVE music!
Moxie & Rebel November 24th we were going to head further north to check out some more music but the roads were getting a bit icy up that way so we decided to stay closer to home. We landed in Selinsgrove at Que Brew. I have wanted to check this place out for a while now and I am glad things worked out as they did. Very cool little place. They have done a great job with it. Jason P Yoder was scheduled to play but when we walked in there were two on stage, Jason playing guitar and his friend Caleb Minium on Violin. Jason is a local in Selinsgrove and an American Blues performing songwriter with influences of Country, Rock and Jazz. When talking with Jason, he said he has been playing since he was 13 and he is not only a vocalist and guitar player but started out playing trumpet. He can also play piano, percussion, bass guitar, mandolin and banjo. He has studied under some great artist like Roy Book Binder, John Cephas and John Jackson to name a few. Jason and Caleb played a good mix of originals and covers from Grateful Dead, Santana and even Guns and Roses in a coffee house style. You can check out Jason’s music on Spotify and all other major music distributors. To close out November, we made a trip to Spyglass Ridge Winery outside of Sunbury. There we saw an outstanding performance from The Gabe Stillman Band from Williamsport. Members include Gabe Stillman: Guitar, Vocals, Colin Beatty: Bass Guitar and Jesse Roedts: Drums.

We’re again upon that peaceful and reflective season of the year, as the world seemingly slows down for a few days and we prepare to turn the page into another year. It’s a time of giving, charity, togetherness, thankfulness, celebration and contemplation; here’s hoping all of our PA Musician readers enjoy a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and safe, pleasant holiday season! The spirit of giving was prevalent throughout the local and regional music scene in recent weeks, demonstrated by a number of benefit concerts and events where musicians, volunteers and the community contributed to help out charitable causes and folks in need. Bands, musicians and the community came together at Altoona’s Jaffa Shrine in late October to raise money for the American Cancer Society during the 7th annual Striking Chords Against Cancer benefit. Full bands and smaller/solo acts alternated during the course of the evening. After Buzz on 27 – the new project featuring former members of Hello, Vixen – opened the night, Matt Pletcher & the PDX were on stage as I arrived. Matt on vocals and acoustic guitar, Kenny Murdick on lead guitar, Paul Rainey on bass, Nathan Beatty on keys and Randy Servello on drums mixed Matt’s original songs with country favorites from Johnny Cash, Zac Brown Band, Darius Rucker, Luke Combs and more. Next was the acoustic incarnation of new area band August Wake, featuring lead singer/guitarist Matt Wagner, guitarist/singer Joe Scott and Eric “Dawg” Swander on percussion. The three musicians performed a short set of original songs that will be on their forthcoming debut EP. At this point, guest speaker Melissa Kruise shared the story of her young daughter Kaylee’s courageous cancer battle, which reminded everyone in attendance what this night was all about. This Albatross then energized the room with their set, mixing high-energy rock, pop and country favorites. Singer Autumn Grooves Wagner demonstrated a stunning voice up front, especially on the group’s fusion of Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen” with Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and “Call Me.” Commencing with their ballad tribute to actor River Phoenix, “Rise River Rise,” the duo of Dave Villani and Steve Oswalt then shifted gears into a milder vein, mixing pop and rock classics from Richard Marx, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beatles, Billy Joel and more. Steve, three-fifths of This Albatross (Philly Grooves Wagner, Kirk Robison and Shawn Gioiosa) and bassist Rich Johnson reconvened as Agent Smith to kick out their hard-rocking set. They mixed favorites from Stone Temple Pilots, Harvey Danger and The Cult, before morphing into their ‘Agent In Chains’ tribute to Alice In Chains for five of that group’s classics, including Steve’s dedication of “Rooster” in memory of his late father. Making another Striking Chords appearance, Drew Dodson’s four-song acoustic set led to the nightcap performance by The Chrome Hearts, who kicked up the country with a mixture of their own original songs plus favorites from Miranda Lambert, Eric Church, Gretchen Wilson, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Johnny Cash and more. Also in late October, McGarvey’s in Altoona hosted the Trick or FEED Food Drive Halloween Bash, as three heavy-hitting bands raised funds and non-perishable food items for the Altoona Food Bank. Organized by Hate Grenade, Trick or FEED kicked off with sets from Altoona’s Fyre and Pittsburgh’s Oceans to Ash. I arrived just before Hate Grenade’s set; frontman Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera, bassist Donny D and drummer Mike Powers scorched the walls with numerous tunes from their latest CD, The King Is Dead. They led off with the title track, and followed with “Burn,” “Reborn,” “Temptress,” “Revelation,” “Come With Me,” “Watch Your Back” and more. As always, Hate Grenade delivered all-out intensity, totally investing in their performance and bringing the fury. Trick or FEED raised $300 and lots of non-perishable foods for the Altoona Food Bank. Musicians and the community again converged at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society last month for the 8th annual Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch, which raised funds for Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch, a peer support program for children and families who have suffered the loss of loved ones. Eight bands performed on two stages; comprised of musicians ranging in age from 11 to 17, youth rockers 80 Degreez kicked off the event impressively with their set of classic rock gems. guitarist Ian, bassist Mack and drummer Alex sounded tight and together as they performed numbers from 38 Special, Pat Benatar, Scandal, Blue Oyster Cult, Scorpions and more. 80 Degreez upped the ante as they went along, culminating in excellent renditions of Iron Maiden’s “Wasted Years” and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” to finish their set. Featuring the father-and-son tandem of Donny Burns Sr. and Jr. on voices and guitars, Time with Donny Burns continued with their interesting blend of rocking classics. Along with guitarist Nick Stahlman, bassist James Arroway and drummer Mike Hohnka, Time with Donny Burns did fresh-sounding takes on The Who’s “The Seeker,” the Black Crowes’ “Remedy,” the Allman Brothers’ “Soulshine,” Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” and “Ramble On,” and more. Railtowne shifted the musical flavor toward country with their set, welcoming guests onstage along the way. Singer/ guitarist Ty Ayers, guitarists Kenny Murdick and Eric Wertz, keyboardist Nathan Beatty, bassist Paul Rainey and drummer Zac Grace triggered dance activity with tunes from Miranda Lambert, Randy Houser, Jason Aldean, Big & Rich, Brantley Gilbert and more. Alex Shumaker of 80 Degreez joined Railtowne on both guitar and drums, as well as his bandmate Ian and others. Also making their Patched Together debut, Negan fired off hard-rocking favorites from Stone Temple Pilots, Seven Mary Three, Live, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, a version of Iron Maiden’s “Two Minutes to Midnight” and more. Returning favorites Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors continued to elevate spirits with their set, performing upbeat original songs off their latest album We See Through It and more. Namesake Jim on vocals and guitar, bassist Kent Tonkin, guitarist/harmonica man Dan Murphy, percussionists Bryan Fazio and Harry Pepper were joined by Jim’s daughter Tupelo on backing vocals, guest guitarist Noah Myers and guest drummer Charles McClanahan. Greg Burley followed with his acoustic set, performing rock, folk and country numbers from Bob Seger, Three Dog Night, Lumineers, Drake White, Bee Gees, Steve Earle and more. Matt Otis & the Sound presented a mixture of original songs and select favorites. Also making his first Patched Together appearance, namesake Matt on vocals, guitar and keys, Kent Tonkin on bass, Alec Zander Redd on sax, Harry Pepper on percussion and Charles McClanahan on drums did versions of the Mon-
kees’ “I’m a Believer” and Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” as well as original songs favorites such as “Frozen Moments,” “Home,” “Make” and “The Most Important Thing.” The Chrome Hearts then closed out Patched Together with their rousing country-rock mixture; doing original songs from their Oh No CD and country favorites. I also took in last month’s benefit concert for Harpo’s John “Lloyd” Kistner at the Front Street Station in Northumberland. Four bands – Kinsey, Jesse, Sucker Punch and Hybrid Ice – donated their talents to raise funds and support for “Lloyd,” Harpo’s singer and keyboardist, on the mend after encountering stroke issues in August. Besides music, the benefit also featured basket giveaways plus a guitar autographed by the members of Harpo. I missed Kinsey’s opening set, but arrived as Jesse was rocking a full house crowd. Rocking Susquehanna Valley stages for more than 40 years, Jesse – singer/guitarist Tom Inch, bassist/singer Scott Clark, lead guitarist Chooch Stanton and drummer Ken McCartney – had folks dancing and cheering to favorites from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimmy Eat World, Chuck Berry, Cheap Trick, AC/DC and more. Next was Sucker Punch, the hard-rocking side project featuring Harpo bassist (and show organizer) “Billy Rock” Kerstetter and guitarist Chris Silvagni, plus singer Bill Swartzlander and drummer Tim Conrad. Sucker Punch delivered fury, intensity and attitude on their set of modern heavy rock covers, lighting up the house with numbers from Godsmack, Pop Evil, Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Disturbed, Saliva, Linkin Park and more. A major highlight was when Sucker Punch welcomed Harpo drummer Richard Smith and Halfway to Hell (AC/DC tribute) singer Forrest to the stage for a rousing version of “Highway to Hell.” In between songs, Billy expressed gratitude to the crowd for their support and celebrated his 50-year-plus friendship with Lloyd. After opening with their original tune “Leaving the World Behind,” Hybrid Ice – Bob Richardson on vocals and keys (and a few times drums), Chris Alburger and Rusty Foulke on vocals and guitar, Jason Shaffer on bass and Rick Klinger on drums – saluted Lloyd with their version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” a song Lloyd frequently performed with Harpo. Hybrid Ice proceeded to do what they do best, delivering arena rock classics from the 1970s and 80s from Styx, Journey, Boston, The Who and more. The band members sans Jason alternated singing duties, and capa-

bly delivered the vocals and harmonies. Rick stepped out from behind the drum kit (and Bob took over drumming duties) to sing lead on AC/DC’s “Sin City.” Hybrid Ice also strung together a lengthy medley of classics from Bad Company, Jefferson Starship, Aerosmith, Metallica, Guns N’Roses, Bon Jovi and more, culminating with the ending of the Beatles’ “Sun King Medley.” Chris then fronted the group on their popular signature tune “Magdalene,” before an emotional Billy Rock returned to the stage to again thank the bands and fans for all the support. Boston’s “Smokin.’” The atmosphere was charged and the room was full of positive energy throughout the benefit as people had a good time and showed love and support for Lloyd. Here’s to his full recovery, and the hopes that we get to see him back on a performance stage soon! Outdoor musical activities drew to a close as temperatures turned colder. Downtown Hollidaysburg presented its annual Pumpkin Festival in late October, with pumpkin-based food in the spotlight, numerous vendors and live music. Zach Wade & the Good Grief capped the day’s music. With Graham Albright filling in on lead guitar for Rogan Allen, the group pleased passers-by, fans and onlookers with their mostly original song arsenal, mixing tunes off their @ the Bitter End EP with new tunes, and even a few Zach solo originals to start their second set. Graham generated some clean and impressive guitar solos along the way, and he, Zach, bassist Devin Pierce and drummer Keegan Allen were tight on the execution. Zach Wade & the Good Grief did at least two covers; a version of Prince’s “Starfish and Coffee” during their first set, and Rusted Root’s “Send Me on My Way” to close out their show. Also performing this day were the Joy Drummers, who pounded out west African drum songs, and kicking off the day’s music, the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners with their mix of bluegrass and folk sounds. Once in a while, my monthly PA Musician delivery duties coincide with covering a live music event. Such was the case in early November when I did my magazine foot deliveries around downtown State College as the city’s monthly First Friday festivities took place. The main festivities were centered around Fraser Street to celebrate veterans and Veteran’s Day. One U.S. Army veteran, Sgt. Bob Timney, performed at the Fraser Mini Mall stage. Strumming acoustic guitar and singing, Bob did a mixture of original songs off his Papa’s Moon CD and rock, soul, folk and country favorites. I caught several of his songs, including versions of Sammy Johns’ 1973 hit “Chevy Van,” Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” and a song off his CD, “Empty Halls.” I later encountered The Roof as they performed in front of the State Theatre on College Avenue. Jacob Finkbiner and percussionist Skyler Scholl mixed songs from their newly-issued EP Tangled Lives with a variety of alternative blues, rock, funk and pop. Speaking of the State Theatre, I made it inside that venue to see the legendary Dave Mason last month. Part of “The Very Best of Dave Mason” tour as he celebrates 50 years of live performing, Dave and his band performed some of the songs he created or helped to popularize. Joined by singer Gretchen Rhodes (who has worked with Mick Fleetwood for more than a decade), guitarist Johnne Sambataro, keyboardist Tony Patler and drummer Alvino Bennett, Dave did numbers such as “Only You Know and I Know,” turned into a 1971 hit by Delaney & Bonnie; numbers from Traffic (which he co-founded) such as “Feeling Alright,” “Rock and Roll Stew,” a blues/soul duet take (with Gretchen) on “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys,” and a minor-key spin on “Dear Mr. Fantasy”; Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” and more. Now 72, Dave shared some stories and humor, and displayed stellar guitar work, while Gretchen displayed an excellent voice on many of the songs. When the State Theatre crowd called for an encore, Dave and the band returned, with Gretchen fronting an Aretha Franklin tribute with a version of “Chain of Fools,” before Dave and the group finished the night with “All Along the Watchtower.” Another highlight for me in recent weeks was seeing Shane Speal & the Snakes last month as they raised the roof at Speal’s Tavern in New Alexandria. I was already eager to see Shane and his band perform at his family-owned music venue. But Shane then announced that this night would also be the christening of his new Cigar Box Guitar Museum housed at the Tavern. I arrived as Shane gave his presentation and tour of the new museum, spotlighting new additions and musical artifacts; his “guitarcheology” as elaborated upon in his new book, Making Poor Man’s Guitars. “This is our gift to the world,” said Shane as he went around the room and introduced each instrument. The assortment of instruments was amazing, and each had its own story. Ham can guitars and ukuleles, one-string cigar-box guitars and violins, instruments made from gas cans, horse bridles, dresser drawers, biscuit tins, frying pans and more, plus unusual curios such as a saxophone-shaped mandolin, unusual double-necked guitars such as the “Devil Girl Double Neck” and “Earle, the Evil Double-Neck” (which had been found in the muck and devastation following Hurricane Katrina) and more. Afterward, the show itself was raucous and rowdy from start to end. Imagine Motorhead as a jug blues band, and you might have a general sense of what Shane Speal & the Snakes bring to the stage. Shane on his assortment of cigar box guitars and lead vocal howls and growls, Farmer Jon on washtub bass and Rick Stepina on cajon blasted through three sets of original tunes, interpretations of early blues tunes, medleys, and even raw early blues takes on select rock, pop, soul and country numbers. Highlights were many, from Shane and the Snakes’ rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” to many of the original songs – including the sinister “Strung Out, Drunk and Busted (And There’s a Body in the Trunk),” “49 Years,” “A Fat Man Will Love You (Like No Skinny Boy Can),” “Six Feet in the Hole,” “16 Miles to Saltsburg,” and a couple from the latest album Stay Primal such as “Drinkin’ Beer” and “Quarter to Nine.” Highlights also included the cover song arsenal; including Shane’s early blues reworking of Rush’s “Working Man” which incorporated pieces of Bo Diddley’s “Bo Diddley” and Ace Frehley’s “New York Groove,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Redhouse,” plus tunes from Hank Williams, Depeche Mode, Led Zeppelin, Lionel Richie/The Commodores, and – to cap the night – Prince’s “Purple Rain” and the fusion of The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.” Four area bands from the mid-2000s reunited onstage last

month for the “2005” show at McGarvey’s. This was a fun event, a sort of living photo album of a local music moment in time. Chapter 5 reprised their full-throttled brand of driving punk rock to open the night. Frontman/bassist Tim Mort, drummer Billy Mort and guitarist/singer Tom Noel brought back former furious tunes such as “Inside Out,” “Buried,” “Teenage Angst Rebellion,” “2-Door Hardtop,” “Compromised,” “Hollow Song,” “I Stand Alone” and more. Tim commented that it was fun and rewarding for the group to revisit and relearn these songs, and Chapter 5 sounded sharp and inspired on the entire set. Likewise, The Fisticuffs revisited their punk rocking glory and fired up the crowd and some pit action. Guitarist/singer Tyler Jenkins, guitarist Pat Orr, bassist Chet Lafferty and drummer Justin Burket slammed out vigorous tunes such as “Premonition,” “Locked In,” “Dead to Me,” a cover of The Methadones’ “Hygiene Aisle” and more. The Fury of Turd Ferguson then blended elements of alternative, punk, hardcore and scream. Five members strong, The Fury of Turd Ferguson had a large contingent of fans up front cheering and stirring up moshpit action with tunes that took erratic and chaotic twists and turns. The Hope Fallacy then closed out the night with their reunion set, blasting melody-geared power punk and pop. Singer and bassist Eric McCrum, singer/guitarist Adam Pielmeier, guitarists Adam Mueller and Evan Fredo, and drummer Trey Carruthers energized the house with their familiar original song favorites such as “Over and Out,” “Behind Closed Doors,” “Caroline Street,” “Up All Night” and more. The Hope Fallacy fired up a happy dance pit and sent the show home with an upbeat vibe. Judging by the large turnout, all four of these bands made a clear mark on the area music scene and influenced musicians now on the scene major kudos to Sean Stringer for putting this show together, an excellent night! From New York City, Tragedy: Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond returned at McGarvey’s last month. After local 80s hair band practitioners Hair Force One opened the night, Tragedy gave the heavy-handed metal treatment to Bee Gees and various late 1970s disco-era hits, complete with glam, humor and bombast. Comprised of singer/keyboardist Disco Mountain Man, singer/guitarist Mo-Royce Peterson, bassist/singer Andy Gibbous Waning, lead guitarist Garry Bibb and drummer The Lord Gibbeth (plus utility infielder and towel boy Lance), Tragedy kept the ‘Altoona City’ crowd rocked and entertained with their crazed takes on “You Should Be Dancing,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive,” an AC/DC-tinged send-up of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and – bringing multiple ladies from the audience onstage – the night-ending, lid-slamming version of Village People’s “YMCA.” The outfits, choreography, energy, antics and humor propelled this into a wild, fun night. Also at McGarvey’s, I recently saw the triple-bill featuring Zach Wade & the Good Grief, Idle Kyle and The Crew Of The Half Moon. Calling both State College and Philadelphia their home base, Idle Kyle features singer, guitarist and keyboardist Nicole June and drummer Sebastian Goodridge. They crafted an intriguing sound rooted in indie folk and rock, but flavored with elements of jazz and other flourishes. Johnstown’s The Crew Of The Half Moon introduced a number of new songs as they gear up to record their next album. Singers and multi-instrumentalists Katie Rhodes and Dan Oatman, plus drummer Jon Beard, mixed those new songs with tunes off their previous album, Blanket Fort Radio. And with regularly-scheduled guitarist Rogan Allen back on the stage, Zach Wade & the Good Grief closed the night strong with their blend of new and familiar original songs. I caught my first look at Avenue of Kings as they rocked the Castle Pub in Ebensburg last month. I arrived just as openers Restless at Ten were wrapping up their set with Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Goin’ Down,” which had some dancers up and moving. Then taking the stage was Avenue Of Kings, the new area heavy-rocking project featuring Fyre frontman Matt Stoyanoff on lead voice, Chris Silva on guitar, Brad Jamison on bass and the return of former Flight 19 drum man Darin Hand behind the kit. This group lit things up on their two sets, doing a mix of classic, new rock and metal from the likes of Poison, Skid Row, Alice In Chains, Van Halen, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Motley Crue, Ghost A.D., Theory Of a Deadman, Sixx AM, Greta Van Fleet and more. Avenue Of Kings raised the bar as they went; by the latter stages of their nightcap set, they were dropping jaws to the floor with remarkable takes on Judas Priest’s “Hellion/Electric Eye,” Iron Maiden’s “Wasted Years,” Megadeth’s “A Tout Le Monde,” and – for possibly the first time ever covered on a local stage – Helloween’s “I Want Out!” Matt was again doing unbelievable feats on the vocal end, Chris was blistering on the continued on page 19...

THE PROFESSOR continued..... frets, Brad’s bass lines were sturdy and clear, and – only recently coming on board – Darin sounded totally in control behind the kit. Watch out for Avenue Of Kings as they spread their rock throughout the region – very impressive! Lancaster-based cosmic rockers Medusa’s Disco brought their hard-rocking psychedelic sounds back to The Arena in State College early last month. This was a three-part show, with one of the group’s two guitarists and singers, Hunter Root, opening with a solo acoustic set. He performed indie-folk/rock-flavored original tunes. The rest of the group minus Hunter – singer/guitarist Wynton Huddle, bassist Anthony Procopio and drummer Alex Aument – then took the stage as Halloween Moontown, playing just their second show as this configuration. In a similar vein to the mothership band, Halloween Moontown did their own take on psychedelic-flavored rock with an adventurous approach, mixing in curious time signatures, plus elements of jazz, reggae, even a waltz beat on parts of their song “Immortality.” The full band – jokingly using the alter ego ‘Corporate Scorpions’ – then closed out the night with their freewheeling set, introducing a lot of new compositions toward their next album. Medusa’s Disco’s sound continues to be rooted in late ‘60s/early ‘70s experimental rock channeling Led Zeppelin and Wishbone Ash, distilled through the reckless abandon of Primus and the modern-day stoner rock of Queens of the Stone Age. Each song was a different adventure, and all of Medusa’s Disco’s tunes kept an excited group of fans firmly in front of the stage from start to end. Guest Nick Stahlman joined in to wail some harmonica on one number. Medusa’s Disco again generated musical unpredictability and excitement; their next album should be issued next spring. I caught up with Johnstown hard rockers Inside Out in late October as they rocked a Halloween party at the Sunshine Mine Inn in Coalport. The room was packed as Inside Out did their thing; frontman/guitarist Tim Frick, guitarist Cody Williams, bassist Larz Philip and drummer Mark Gindlesperger brought the thunder with some of their new original tunes such as the anthemic “Get Up,” “Watch You Burn,” “In My Blood” and “I Will Find a Way,” and they drilled heavy-rocking favorites from Kiss, Avenged Sevenfold, Pop Evil, Saliva, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Kiss, Ratt, Van Halen and more. Inside Out is at work on their next CD, and they recently introduced their band brand of Cocho, a locally-distilled bourbon with a habanero bite. Other performers I saw recently included Casey Gray & Tyler Shultz at the Dog House in Bellwood, and Felix & the Hurricanes during one of their weekly Sunday shindigs at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. The area music scene was saddened by several passings in
recent weeks…Longtime musician Jerry Mosey passed away on October 30 at age 60. Jerry played alongside his brother, Jim Mosey, for two decades in the Mason-Dixon Band, and also played bass in the group Cross Fire. Jerry was also the father of area drummer Jay Mosey...Steve Forgas passed away unexpectedly at his home on Nov. 20 at age 46. Steve played on area stages for more than two decades; he sang, played guitar and keys, and was a member of several Johnstown area bands over the years, including Ribbon Grass and Blue Collar Fate…And Steven Helsel, the operations manager of Altoona Community Theatre, died on Thanksgiving Day after a brief illness at age 63. Steven was a driving force behind Altoona Community Theatre as well as the local arts community, was involved in scheduling, public relations and fundraising for Altoona Community Theatre, and directed and acted in local theatre as well…Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the families, friends and colleagues of all three men. TED McCLOSKEY & MOLLY COUNTERMINE – BAGGAGE & BLOODLINES (Voodoo Cat Records) Both Ted McCloskey and Molly Countermine have created and performed on Centre County stages for years; in separate projects, together in Maxwell Strait and often in Ted’s current band, the Hi-Fi’s. On Baggage & Bloodlines, the two musicians pool their songwriting and performance talents into a thoughtful, captivating mixture of folk, rock and blues. The disc’s 11 tracks dig deeply into melancholy themes of personal baggage and darker emotions, particularly surrounding relationships gone awry and their subsequent scars. Ted does the bulk of the songwriting, while Molly’s voice brings a soft-spoken presence and conscience to those words. She expresses emptiness and longing on the blues-toned disc-opener “Really Miss Your Rain,” and yearns to leave her past further behind on “Spitting Image.” Time heals all wounds, but Molly sings of restlessness with the length of that healing process on “Long Live Low Tide,” and longs for an end to lengthy emotional pain and angst on “Whatever God Eases the Pain.” In a slightly more upbeat vein, “Hungry Ghost” expresses the desire for satisfaction and asserting one’s identity. Ted explores emotional pain on two of the songs he voices; questioning someone’s emotional mask on “So Much Later Than Before,” and exploring the psychological scars of an abusive childhood on “Far Too Young.” Two songs hint at current societal pains; “Fly, Fly, Fly” channels a ‘Me Too’ theme of a woman’s escape from abuse and repression, while the bluesy disc-closer “Punch Holes in the Darkness” fights to shatter the dark cloak of hatred, continued on page 20...

The songs ride compelling melodies and mostly stripped-down arrangements that enable the words to fully connect. Produced by Ted, the album sounds cohesive and clear, and its strippeddown simplicity lets the performances do the talking. Baggage & Bloodlines is an alluring and relatable album, as Ted and Molly sort through baggage of the soul. (To obtain the CD, visit Ted McCloskey’s website, www.tedmccloskey.com.) SHANE SPEAL & THE SNAKES – STAY PRIMAL (no label) The “King of the Cigar Box Guitar,” York’s Shane Speal, is back with his latest project, Shane Speal & the Snakes. Their album, Stay Primal, stays primal over 11 tracks as it taps into raw, early blues and folk for influence and inspiration. Fronting the group with his hearty growl, Shane wields an assortment of cigar box guitars, along with mandolin, bass, washboard and more. Assisting him are Farmer Jon on washtub bass, Derick Kemper on harmonica and Rick Stepina on percussion and cajon. Most of the songs are written or co-written by Shane, with the lone exception of the disc’s opening track, a spirited rendi-

tion of Jimmy Witherspoon’s “Drinkin’ Beer,” which sets a fun tone for the album with rowdy gang shout choruses. The songs are varied, interesting and topical; on the lighthearted “Hard Times and Cigarettes,” Shane likens a relationship to a multitude of connected items, referencing
such things as “slipknots, gallow’s poles and broken necks” and “pencils and old cassettes.” With a slight nod to the Rolling Stones, “Miss Treater” spins a tale of domestic revenge, while the stern “Rehmeyer’s Hollow” documents a 1920s York County murder case, using a mixture of spoken narratives. Shane precedes the simple and folksy “Dance” by recalling the unnamed dance-happy York woman who inspired the song, and he laments the aging and domestication that has relegated him to riding a mower, wearing tube socks and driving a family vehicle on the bluesy “Minivan.” And Shane and the Snakes mix gypsy and New Orleans musical flavors on “Everybody Get A Rock,” which incorporates the popular “When the Saints Go Marching In.” The
performances come across as sounding loose, fun, and enjoyable for Shane and the Snakes to create, and they never take things too seriously here. Recorded at assorted studios in the York area, Stay Primal sounds stripped down, basic and authentic, capturing the vibe of early back porch-styled blues and roots music. This is a fun listen; Stay Primal mixes jug band dynamics with gusto and wit to yield a satisfying set. (The CD can be obtained through Shane Speal’s website, www.shanespeal.com.) AFRAID OF HUMAN – AFRAID OF HUMAN (no label) Formed in 2014, Warren-based quintet Afraid Of Human demonstrates their brute-force, heavy rock/metal sound on their self-titled full-length CD. Lead singer Jimmie Botto, guitarists Brandon Kulp and Michael Key, bassist Dusty Huff and drummer John Grimm channel classic and nu-metal flavors over the album’s 11 tracks, delivering a heavy rocking sound rooted in the power metal traditions of Metallica and Pantera, as well as nu-metal practitioners like Godsmack and Breaking Benjamin. Jimmie provides a strong voice up front that displays range and touches of rage, and the rest of the group renders tight and forceful rhythms. The songs blend a variety of hard-hitting angles, along with alluring hooks, concise rhythms and instrumental precision. The charging disc-opener “Through the Lies” sets the tone with a stern melody, effective vocal harmonies and shredding guitar work. The group shows a Godsmack/Metallica-styled roar and furvor on the rampaging “Gut Check,” and channel a Bullet For My Valentine-geared fury on the haunting “Ghost in the Shadows.” Afraid Of Human unleash all-out aggression on the dark and punishing “Walk With Me” and the thrash-driven “Repercussions of War.” The group explores slower and more melodic terrain on “The One” and “From the Ashes,” and ventures into rowdier turf with the swaggering “Now You Know” and the party-hardy rocker “Livin’ It Up.” Afraid Of Human fires on all cylinders throughout the album and their execution is confident and on target. Produced by Anthony Brown and recorded at Graphite Sound Studio in Warren, this album sounds appropriately thunderous and balanced, and the group’s toughness and sharp edge are clear and prominent. Afraid Of Human delivers an impressive statement with this self-titled album, and establishes themselves as a heavy-hitting force worthy of attention.
