Editor’s Ramblings By Josh Noll
The Magazine that keeps on giving over 36 years later!
Founder- “Whitey” Lee Noll Consulting Editor/Angel of design-Robin Noll Owner/Publisher/Sales-Joshua Noll
Welcome back to another issue of the PA Musician Magazine. November is the anniversary of the magazine’s beginning. 36 years ago, as summer came to a close, Whitey Noll grew tired of wondering how to get Christmas gifts for the kids. He was looking to start something of his own and the idea of the PA Musician Magazine was born. Seemed kinda crazy to 7 year old at the time. My Dad is starting a Rock and Roll paper, that should be fun! While I was off riding my bike, the old man was out getting a typewriter from a yard sale and selling his idea to
have to call Dad and say, “Hey I think the van just blew up”. He was pissed as he asked why I was pulled over on the left side of the highway instead of the right . Honest answer... “Dad, I was passing a line of cars doing 80. The paper was late and Mom told me I had 45 mins to make it to Danville”. New motors, new axles, new transmissions, typewriters flying out windows, the first MAC and yes, I mean the first MAC ( mom went through a couple of them), the internet, all these things have happened over the last 36 years and the paper keeps going. Since I took it over in June, I have been loving it. I can’t say I am going to be the next person on the millionaire list, but I am happy with my work and with bringing the paper to life every month. I couldn’t do it with out all the hard work that my mother still does to help me on the way. Also, Rachel Rocks who somehow manages to see more bands than I can imagine and also do the cover story for us. The list goes on and on: Jim Price, Eric Hoffman, Space!, Sterling Koch, Michele Kelly, Chris Rider, and all the bands, bars, clubs, and readers that still support us. Here’s to another

We got to see KIX and I’m guessing a lot of people were asking who the kids in the corner were. I once watched the SHARKS at a theatre somewhere; it was Dad, myself and handful of other people. I forget what was going on, but it seemed like these guys were up there just playing for us. I think it was a sound rehearsal for a show later that night. There are so many stories to go along with the paper; it would be impossible to tell them all. Space is the drummer for Penntera and Maiden America . He is always helping others with benefits and this time we need to help SPACE. He has fought a tuff road against some cancer and is now on the pathway to recovery, but needs our help to get him and his family back on track and rocking again. So be sure to check the fliers in this issue and make plans to attend or donate to the SPACE man himself. Last order of business, we have T-Shirts for sale! They are going fast, so fast that I don’t know how much longer I will have them. To get yours, simply email me at joshnoll@pamusician. net . OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
Let me tell ya.. Rocktober was definitely rocking!! I saw more bands in October than I’ve seen in a very long time. I went to a few festivals and bigger events with multiple bands, but it’s still a lot to cover so I better get crackin! It started off many moons ago with Yak Bone at Chick’s. I picked up 2 friends on the way and took them to Chick’s for the first time. When we arrived there were plenty of shenanigans going on already. If you danced you were given a Yak Bone sticker and people were stickin’ their stickers all over the place! Obviously a little incentive goes a long way, because the dance floor was busy all night long! Yak Bone plays a lot of your singa-long favorites and gets the crowd involved and having a good time. You can check out Yak Bone’s ad in this issue, like them on Facebook and get out there and get your free sticker! A little side note.. Congrats to their lead singer Rochelle and her beautiful wife Cindi.. They got married on October 20th! The next day was a SUPER busy one.. It started off with a trip down to York for the Roosterpalooza Fall Music Festival. I’m so glad I finally made it down to this event. It was extremely well organized by Mark Sutherland and the rest of his crew. There were vendors, delicious food, and of course lots of great entertainment! I got there in time to see Latimore Sky. I’m so happy they finally got a new bass player, Mike Stem, worked in to the line up so we will hopefully see more of Latimore Sky, and I’m sure they’ll be cranking out new originals before too
ZoSo at Club XL
long. Sid, Rhyan, and PJ are still jamming their hearts out playing with as much emotion as humanly possible. It’s always a special treat seeing these guys on stage. A little extra shout out to PJ, thanks for sharing your chairs and hanging with me for the day. It’s always a good time with Latimore Sky. The next band was Conviction with Kathy behind the microphone. Holy Shmokes! Kathy can definitely sing!! It’s not too often you can hear a woman belting out so much old school metal and she did an amazing job and had the dance floor rockin. Side Piece with yet another female lead singer had some pressure to keep people on the dance floor, but it wasn’t a problem for them. Side Piece is filled with seasoned musicians I’ve seen in different bands thru the years so these guys were ready to keep the party happening. Side Piece surprised people with some of the songs they were able to cover, songs you definitely don’t hear other bands playing in the area, but yet are your favorites! The last band of Roosterpalooza for me was From Dawn Till Death. I’ve heard of these guys for quite a while now, and after taking a hiatus to basically form a new band, they are back and ready to rock your faces off. Overall it was a great afternoon of entertainment! I’m so glad I finally made it down to a Roosterpalooza. Hopefully I’ll see you all again at the next one! The day wasn’t over yet, I made it home in time to help a friend move a couple hours, and then I headed over to the NEW Cliff’s Tavern (old Gullifty’s) for Six Bar Break’s CD Release Party. Six Bar Break did everything they could possibly do to promote the release of their new album, “Cleaner Than I Feel”. They even screen printed their own merch in their kitchen! They are completely DIY!! They had Sweet Corn & Peanut open the show. These two have got to be one of the cutest acts in the area. The vibe between them is so amazing and the way they can harmonize is simply something you need to see. It was a great way to get things started. Six Bar Break took the stage and played through their whole album, it was cool to hear it all in order with the meaning behind why each song was written. “Jesse James” is one of my faves on this album, but a close second would obviously be “That Woman Knows.” Overall it’s a great album and I hope the world pays attention and gives these guys the listen they deserve! Check out their ad in this issue to see where they will be rockin’ next and get out there and support some amazing original music! And, buy their album! The following weekend was another crazy busy day with the Robert E. Morris Sr. Memorial Ride & Music Fest. After the unfortunate passing of Bobby Morris Sr., his family started the Bobby’s Benefit Foundation and they decided to put together this crazy festival to get everyone together to hear the music we love and celebrate Bob’s life. It was a chilly yet amazing day, and I’m sure Bob was smiling down on us and loving every minute of the day. It started at 11am with a Memorial Ride from Susquehanna Harley to the Festival site, the Campbelltown Fire Co. I ran over and snagged a couple pics of the ride and then came home to warm up and snuggle my puppies. I tried to get to the festival in time to catch TH3, but since I’m a slacker I only
heard them playing while I was walking over from my car. One of these days I will catch a full show, please don’t give up on me! The first band I did see was the Colt Wilbur Band. Colt had some new band members, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen them play. Colt Wilbur Band plays a lot of your favorite classic country songs and throws in some originals along the way. They are always a pleasure to hear, I’m glad I finally saw them again. The Famous took the stage next, these guys and gal cover songs from the 70’s, 80’s and beyond! With so many vocalists in one band it’s awesome to hear anything they play. They are also another one of those bands that have so many seasoned musicians that have played a stage or two in their day, and they know how to get a crowd’s attention and keep the party hoppin! Next to take the stage was Road Case. I know there were quite a few Smokin’ Gunnz fans that were excited to see Chris DellaPorta on the stage again. I’m sure Road Case made quite a few new fans after their set. They rocked the stage in true Road Case fashion playing your favorite rock and roll that you could feel down to your soul! Road Case is another band with lots of other familiar faces. Tony, who also sings for Back In Black is the lead singer, and Jeff Lawrence and Ed Piccolo who are both from the band End of Silence are on bass and drums. We know all of these guys can rock a stage, and seeing them all rock together is always a special treat! Check out Road Case’s schedule in this issue and get out there and see this talented band for yourself! As it started to get dark and even colder, the Matt Creter Band took the stage. I saw these guys last month, and I have to say I was more than happy to see them again. They play your favorite classic rock songs mixed with a slight twist of the blues with such crazy precision. You don’t see the Matt Creter Band out playing regular gigs, they only come out of hibernation for special gigs, and I was lucky to see them two months in a row! Chapel Hill took us all back to the boot scootin’ country songs. Chapel Hill plays more modern country songs with Roy Bennett on lead vocals. I just caught a full show of Chapel Hill last month at Blarney’s and when you only hear a short benefit set, it just makes you wanting to hear more! I’m sure all see them again soon. The last band of the night, truly a bittersweet moment, Smokin’ Gunnz took the stage. Mike Brady and Rick Marko were the only two original members, they brought in help on lead vocals and drums from the band Rock Candy based out of the Reading area. I was thrilled to hear the first song and hear how great they all sounded together. They played a lot of the deep friend southern rock the original Smokin’ Gunnz would’ve played, for sure, making Bob proud. Katelyn’s main goal was to get all of Bob’s fans together in one place listening once again to music that Bob would’ve loved, and I’d say she accomplished her goal! All proceeds of the event went to Juvenile Diabetes Research and the PA Wounded Warriors in Bob’s name. It was truly a great day of music and entertainment! I heard there is a chance to keep an eye out for Bobby’s Benefit Foundation to throw another shindig next year. I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes and ears open for that! Next up was another trip down to York to Racehorse Tavern for their Autism Benefit. Autism effects quite a few of my friends and their families, and I was more than happy to travel down and continued on page 9....

OUT & ABOUT continued...
Mike Brady contribute to this event. Another big inspiration to drive down was to see Space, aka Eric Dengler, back behind the drum kit! (He’s been kicking a scare with cancer and after some extensive surgery he is cancer free and back rockin’ the drums again. He still has a long road to recovery with lots of PT, and he’s already been off work quite a few weeks and has medical bills stacking up to the ceiling, so I heard that there will be a benefit for him in December. Please keep your eyes out for that show too!) When I arrived Maiden America was just taking the stage, and you could tell I wasn’t the only one happy to see Space back where he belongs! Maiden America rocked their set harder than ever and the response from the crowd was as equally intense! Gordon does a great job belting out all of your favorite Maiden songs. After just a short break, Space had to take the stage again with Penntera. It had been way too long since I’ve seen Penntera, it was my first time seeing Jason on vocals and I was impressed. It was awesome to see the whole group back together and rockin’ the stage! The dance floor was intense, with even a mosh pit at one point. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of Penntera at the Racehorse! They have a show coming up on November 17th at the Dawg House in Waynesboro. To get the details and rock out with Penntera, check out their ad in this issue, and plan your next head banging adventure! Earlier in the night I was talking to two guys from Gun Metal Gray, Christian Koch and Ed Allison, I guess my head has been under a rock because I had no idea they were two of the guys in Enema – the Premiere Blink 182 Tribute Band. Apparently they’ve been around quite a while, but what do I know. I’m glad I finally got to hear them. I love Blink
182, so it was an awesome way to end the night. I’m so glad I made the trek down to Racehorse Tavern once again, every time I do I’m always impressed by the bands I see and the club. Jim runs a tight ship at the Racehorse and it shows. Even tho the room is packed, there are always plenty of staff working to keep the patrons happy and protected. The Racehorse is one of the few clubs that still have live music at least every Friday and Saturday night. You can check out The Racehorse Tavern’s ad in this issue and plan your next night out on the town! One thing that is usually a challenge for me is getting out early enough to see the opening bands, but this was another night where it all worked out, when Road Case and LeadFoot were opening for ZoSo – the ultimate Led Zepplin Tribute Band at Club XL. I already wrote about Road Case earlier, but this night they actually had 2 fill-ins, Chris Redding from Steel was on vocals, and Todd Vukmanic was on bass. Even with fill-ins these guys didn’t miss a beat and rocked the big stage. It once again just proves what kind of top notch musicians they all are. It was a great show and for those that were seeing Road Case for the first time, they would’ve never known the difference. It’s been
a while since I’ve seen LeadFoot and when they took the stage continued on page 10...

I noticed they have a new guitar player, Justin Sparks. I’m not sure how long he’s been part of the band, but he fits right in and shreds on his guitar like he’s been in the spot for years! When LeadFoot was on stage the crowd started creeping closer towards the stage and even started dancing before their set was over. ZoSo had one of the better crowds I’ve seen at Club XL for a few shows now. That room is just so huge it’s hard to make it look “full” or busy. The die hard Led Zepplin fans had the stage area packed all night, singing along, so to me that confirms that they must’ve been giving Led Zepplin justice. Club XL has been bringing in amazing talent, if you haven’t checked it out yet, you really should check out their ad in this issue and get out there and support live music. When you look at the schedule make sure and check the date, as big national acts are passing through town sometimes they play on odd nights, like Thursdays and Sundays. Also make sure and like them on Facebook. A lot of time Tuesdays they run specials where they might be selling Two for Tuesdays where you can buy one get one free, or they might even be having Ticket Giveaway Contests!! My next adventure I decided to check out a new venue and a new band. I headed up to Halifax to the Corner Pocket Pub to check out a new advertiser, Nineties Entertainment System (NES). I know the drummer, Luke Barnhart, from his old Asking Andy days, and I knew I could count on his amazing wife Kristy to be there supporting his show, so I knew I’d know at least one person there. Sure enough Kristy was there with some of their other family rockin’ to the 90s! I love the 90s, it’s one of my most played playlists on my phone. I was amazed at the broad range of songs that Jon could cover. They definitely played my favorites, and with a whole night of the 90s I was shocked to hear some of the songs because not too many bands in the area play all 90s all night long! The Corner Pocket Pub was a cool little venue with plenty of free parking and free CHEESE CURLS! (The white cheddar ones too!) They recently put in a nice sized stage, so I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot more bands play there in the future. Finally, I made it to the last night of the month, and it was sure to be a Spooktacular one! There were so many Halloween parties happening everywhere it was so hard to decide. I wound up making a quick stop at Johnny Joe’s and wound up seeing Rabid Assassin, who I saw for the first time, I’m not sure if they were dressed up for Halloween or they always look like that, but no matter how they looked they were thrashing the stage with their hard core metal. They calmed things down for a set and put ZZ Top, oh I mean Six Bar Break on the stage, that were dressed like ZZ Top! RT had his own built in beard, but Ben had to borrow one… Even tho they were the calmest band on the bill this night, they still kept the stage rockin’ and had everyone’s attention. Unfortunately I had to leave before Amish Puppets (Suicide Puppets dressed in full Amish Gear) took the stage, but I hear Josh and Missy made an appearance to support the show. I wanted to zoom over to Club XL to check out the My Chemical Romance Tribute Band, DEAD! I saw plenty of YouTube videos of these guys, so I knew it was going to be a good show, but I was amazed at how great it truly was! Justin Hershey the sound engineer had to bring in some more mixing equipment because there were so many instruments on one stage! Luckily his Dad Greg is in the business and could help him out. He did a great job getting everything tuned in and it all sounded and looked awesome! I’m not sure if I even counted everything correctly, but they had at least 3 guitar players, bass, 2 drummers, a keyboard, and for some songs they even had full brass! It was intense and very well done! It was cool to have the big screen behind them showing clips from the actual My Chemical Romance playing behind them. They played through the whole Parade album, and even through a couple more songs in the end. It was another great night of entertainment at Club XL and another packed house! Well that’s all for this month, and I desperately have to get to work. Please check out the magazine, check out all of the schedules and plan your night out on the town. If I influenced you in any way to go check out a band or venue, please let them know that you read about them in the PA Musician Magazine. We need all the advertisers we can get to keep this magazine alive!! If you have any words of encouragement, or want to let me know about your show, email me at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. With covering over 24 bands and only having space for about 20 Hot Shots, there is no way I can possibly put all of the pictures of every musician in the mag, so make sure and check out our Facebook page at facebook.com/PAMusicianMagazine so you can see all of the Hot Shots in color, from not only me but Jim Price and Chris Rider Photography too! Have a rockin’ month.. and get out there and SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!!

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Fall began with a visit to the Bloomsburg Fair featuring a show of four artists from the 80’s, including Tommy Tutone, Greg Kihn, Eddie Money and Rick Springfield. The tour titled “Best In Show” highlighted all the greatest hits from the musicians performing. Tutone and Kihn each performed five songs using Springfield’s backing band. Eddie Money’s show was more of a family affair with daughter Jesse on vocals and son Julian on drums. Rick Springfield headlined putting on a great show and is an extremely talented guitarist. A video montage was shown before leading into the massive hit “Jessie’s Girl,” with tv and movie clips over the decades showcasing how popular the song has been. Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md hosted indie rock band The National this past month. A crowd estimated over 15,000 filled the historic venue to catch the Cincinnati, Ohio based band. The band was touring their latest album ‘Sleep Well Beast’, which won the Grammy award for ‘Best Alternative Music Album’. The National have released 7 studio albums since forming in 1999. A very memorable performance featuring songs, “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “I Need My Girl” and “Mr. November.” Heavy metal returned to Central PA with the reappearance of the BulletBoys and Enuff Z’Nuff at Club XL on October 13. Both bands had played Harrisburg previously in the late 80’s - the BulletBoys actually played Club Met in March 1989 with a ticket price of $2. Unfortunately each band only consisted of one original member, lead singer Marq Torien of BulletBoys and guitarist (now vocalist) Chip Z’Nuff of Enuff Z’Nuff. Incredibly, the Bulletboys have gone thru 36 members since their inception in 1986. The night was filled with memorable songs, “Smooth Up In Ya,” “For the Love of Money” and “New Thing,” “Fly High Michelle.” York-based band Dirt Cheap gave an awesome set providing support for the show. The highlight of this past month was seeing Johnny Lydon aka Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols perform in Philadelphia. The punk icon performed with his other band Public Image Ltd on
October 16 at Union Transfer. Lydon began PiL in 1978 after the demise of the Sex Pistols. When Lydon formed PiL he was eager to pursue a more experimental “anti-rock” project and created one of the most important albums of the post-punk era. It was fantastic to see Lydon still in great form belting out songs “The Body,” “Rise” and “Public Image.” NATIONAL NEWS: Lindsey Buckingham is suing Fleetwood Mac for kicking him off the band’s new tour. In the suit, the guitarist and songwriter is seeking his share of the tour because he says he still wants, and is able to perform. The suit names bandmates Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and John McVie. Buckingham claims he was told five days after the group appeared at Radio City Music Hall in January that the band would tour without him. He says he would have been paid at least $12 million for his share of the tour proceeds. The more than 50-city tour began October 3, with Mike Campbell and Neil Finn replacing Buckingham. Joe Perry is set to embark on his headlining tour this fall in support of his latest solo album, ‘Sweetzerland Manifesto’, via his own label, Roman Records His journey begins November 30 in Iowa and concludes in December with three Los Angeles performances. His touring band features Aerosmith bandmate Brad Whitford and Extreme’s Gary Cherone as the lead vocalist. Fans can expect to hear tunes from Perry’s solo catalogue and rare Aerosmith tracks such as “Toys In The Attic,” “Get Your Wings,”

Joe Perry visits Philadelphia’s Electric Factory on December 5. Stevie Nicks, who’s already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Fleetwood Mac, has been nominated for inclusion as a solo artist next year, along with other first-time nominees Def Leppard, Todd Rundgren, Devo, John Prine and Roxy Music. Nine other artists are returning to the ballot for another try, including Janet Jackson, Radiohead, The Cure and Rage Against the Machine. Generally, about five to seven nominees each year are voted into the hall, located in Cleveland, Ohio.
Winners are announced in December, with the 34th annual ceremony scheduled for March 29 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Ed Sheeran has had the No.1 ranking tour in 2018 having sold 4,377,488 tickets so far this year, with an overall gross of $383.2 million. Mind blowing statistics for the 27-year-old pop star with just a guitar, a microphone and 50,000 fans nightly. Those chart-topping figures come from 83 headlining concerts at 42 venues. Sheeran began 2018 with 106 performances under his belt and $125 million grossed from touring Europe, the Americas and Asia. Sheeran has already performed for 5.8 million fans. Mexico, Canada and the U.S. are all on the menu for Twenty One Pilots’ second leg of North American “Bandito” tour dates. The band is pushing tunes off its latest album, Trench, which released worldwide October 5. All U.S. dates sold out on the first leg of the tour plus – two sold-out Wembley Arenas in London within three hours. The success of Twenty One Pilots is giving rock fans solid evidence that their genre is in no way dead and also showing how religious and spiritual themes can influence bands’ music in more subtle ways than in previous generations. New dates include: June 7 Pittsburgh, PA and June 8 Atlantic City, NJ. Averting a murder trial, former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter for running over and killing a Compton businessman and agreed to serve nearly 30 years in prison. The Death Row Records co-founder entered the plea after striking a deal with prosecutors, and has agreed to serve 28 years. A trial could have led to a life sentence. The 53-year-old was a key player in the gangster rap scene that flourished in the 1990s, and his label once listed Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg among its artists. Knight lost control of the company after it was forced into bankruptcy. He has prior felony convictions for armed robbery and assault with a gun. Observe the 93rd… New CD, “Alive,” Drops November 17th!
Observe the 93rd (OT93) is a high energy, melodic hard rock band from Harrisburg, PA. The band consists of guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek Henry, bass player Tyler Davis, drummer Dylan Zepp, and their newest member, guitarist, Dan Pugh. Observe the 93rd has undergone some member changes over the years and occasionally has some guest musicians on stage, but one thing is very consistent, no matter where they are playing or how many people are watching, they always put on one heck of a show! I first saw Observe the 93rd when I was a guest judge for 105.7 the X’s Battle of the Bands in 2012. The winner got the opportunity to play at the Rock Allegiance Show at Hersheypark Stadium, and guess what?? Observe the 93rd won! Stage presence is such a key factor to any live show I go see and these guys were insane. They were so much fun to watch, and their music was just the perfect icing on top. I’ve seen them quite a few times over the years and I’ve watched them grow and develop as musicians and entertaners. As one of the youngest bands playing in the area, it was always refreshing to see all of the younger fans out enjoying live music, dancing and singing along. In 2013 they won an award for the “Best Live Act” at the 717 Music Awards, I’m definitely not the only one impressed by the show that OT93 brings to the stage! I did see them a couple months ago, but it had been a while. I couldn’t believe how much more aggressive Derek is on the stage stepping up the edge of the stage and singing
Derek Henry
his heart out. Having their new guitar player, Dan, definitely allows Derek to focus more on vocals, which is awesome! Dylan went through a onesie stage for a while, but he was actually wearing normal clothes, which after 5 years of seeing the onesie, it was almost more weird seeing him “normal”. Tyler was his normal, absolutely crazy bass playing self! Even after 7 years of playing you would think things would get “stale” but let me tell you, that is not the case with Observe the 93rd. They are constantly writing music and learn-
ing new music, and more antics to bring to the stage. Because of OT93’s crazy lives and my own crazy life, we decided to mix things up and I just sent Derek some questions, and he sent back the answers. I was going to try and devise some amazing story, but I think it’s better to keep it raw and real so here goes.. Rachel Rocks (RR): The Members: Derek, Dylan, Tyler, ?? Who is the 4th mystery man?? Tell me some back info on how he came into the band, and why you decided to add an additional guitar player… Derek Henry (DH): That’s Dan Pugh! He’s been a friend for a while. We wanted an additional guitarist to fill the live sound a little and to free me up so that I can just sing from time to time. We jammed a few times and he seemed into what we’re doing and has similar ambitions, it just worked!

RR: Congrats on the new upcoming album “Alive”! How many albums does that make for you guys now? DH: It’s our 2nd full-length album. We had an ep titled ‘Attracted to the Abstracted’, then our first album ‘The Vast and Boundless’ in 2016, now we’re about to release our 2nd album ‘Alive’. RR: Tell me about who writes what and why? What’s the story with “Alive”? DH: I pretty much write the songs in my room, then I’ll bring them to the group and Dylan and I feel out the drum grooves, then we’ll collectively nit-pick at parts a bit. And I’m inspired to write for many reasons...working through internal struggles, philosophies, relationships, recounting experiences etc. I think art in general is more often than not someone externalizing their internal suffering as a means of therapy, and that’s
Tyler Davis true for me. This record touches on a lot of topics: reflection, depression, hope, love, consciousness, etc. But the underlying theme seems to be reflecting on times you’ve felt free and alive, enduring times where you feel like alive is the last thing you want to be, and realizing your strength and choosing to be alive in every moment you have in this existence. RR: Tell me about how each recording was? Who did you record “Alive” with? DH: We recorded this album with our friend Logan Summey at Rock Mill Studio in Mechanicsburg, who we also recorded our last album, ‘The Vast and Boundless’, with. We love working with him. We have a very natural creative chemistry in the studio. I tend to have a very specific vision and emotion that I want to make as potent as possible in each track, and he does a great job of helping to hone in on that. A lot of it is unspoken at this point haha, we know what we’re both going for. This album we wanted to make a lot more raw and live-sounding, so less epic reverbs/delays like we used on the last record...a more in your face and vulnerable feel. RR: Tell me about the songs on the new CD are they different than your other stuff? What’s the story behind the artwork of the album? What’s the meaning behind it? DH: This album is definitely different from what we’ve done previously. I feel like most of the songs we write tend to sound pretty different from one another anyways just because we never focus on trying to make them fit a specific genre, the focus is always just the emotion of what’s being expressed in the song. The album cover symbolism will be revealed eventually, but not yet :) RR: What’s happening at the CD Release Show? What bands are opening? New merch?? It’s at Club XL!! That’s awesome in itself… DH: It is at Club XL, which is an amazing new venue and

we are so stoked that we were able to book the release show there for 11/17. We’ll be joined by two really awesome bands, Gas Station Disco and Hot and Dangerous. Both of these bands are ridiculously talented and high energy. Definitely get there in time to check out their sets! It’s going to be a ridiculously crazy show. Our shows always seem to turn into an insane party vibe, this one is going to be crazy on a different level. Don’t send me your texts in the morning about how you can’t believe you drank so much that you shaved one of your eyebrows off and woke up in a Denny’s booth 2 hours from home. If you come, these things may happen. You have been warned. RR: How have you evolved as musicians? It’s obvious from your stage show, but how about mentally? What keeps you motivated to keep writing songs and playing shows? DH: For some bands the mindset is, “Well, we’re in a band... so we need to write songs.”. The creative aspect is a secondary thought, which is totally fine, but that’s just not how I work. I never write for the sake of writing or because I’m in a band. I only write when I have something I need to get out or express. And I find myself needing to express something or inspired constantly, always have, so I write quite a lot...but it’s never simply for the sake of the practice I guess. As far as playing live, everyone in the band just thoroughly loves playing shows and using it as an outlet to completely lose our minds and share a really vulnerable experience with the audience. RR: You’ve opened for Dan Pugh some pretty impressive art-
ists: Foxy Shazam, Three Days Grace, Seether, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Stone Cherry, and Fuel. Any artists you DREAM of opening for? DH: Twenty One Pilots would be really cool, System of a Down, Bring Me the Horizon or even playing a festival where there’s all different genres so we could play with some more pop style artists like Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Drake, and Khalid would be awesome. We all like a really wide spectrum of artists. RR: What’s the band’s favorite song to play? Least favorite song to play? DH: On our last record there’s a song called Clever II that we all really enjoy playing live. It’s about two minutes of full-on weirdness and insanity. That’s probably someone’s tinder bio. Least favorite song is now also Clever II. Well that about sums it up! Observe the 93rd releases their new album “Alive” on Saturday, November 17th at Club XL. Don’t miss this amazing show! If you are out of town, make sure pick up their new album on one of the many online platforms. Make sure and like their page on Facebook, Become a Fan on Reverbnation and do all of those other cool things to do! If you would like to have OT93 booked at your venue or special event, email them at observethe93rd@gmail.com. See you all on the 17th!! www.facebook.com/Observe the 93rd

HITTING THE ROAD By Michele Kelley
Photos by Chris Rider Photography October was a busy month with lots of events going on. We were worried about getting the time in to cover some bands but we did it. I wanted to first start off with something that has been on my mind and heard a few times since we started with the magazine. While talking with several musicians, concerns were made about how they would fit since the magazine primarily covers hard rock/metal bands. The magazine is open to us covering whoever we want and anyone that knows us will not be surprised to hear us say “challenge accepted”! This magazine is for all genres of music. Please give us the opportunity to share that with you. The first band, The Commonheart, we discovered 3 years ago in Johnstown at a music festival. They are from the Pittsburgh area and originated 4 years ago with 5 members and have continued to grow as musicians and have since doubled in members. That’s right, 10 members, and sometimes performing with as many as 14 members. When we originally saw them, we wondered why these guys are not much bigger than they are. They
The Commonheart
The Commonheart played at Rusty Rail Brewing Company in Mifflinburg on October 5th, which is a huge place with great food and beverages. 9 members were present for this show that included Clinton Clegg: Vocals, Nate Insko: Trumpet, Vocals, Shawn McGregor: Drums, Antone DeFade: Bass, Mariko Reid: Vocals, Kenny Stockard: Vocals, Abby Gross: Sax, Vocals, Lucas Bowman: Keys and Mike Minda: Guitar. They play a great mix of soulful rock ‘n’ roll with some bluesy tones. Their originals are from their 2016 album ‘Grown’. Clinton’s gritty voice along with Mariko’s very powerful voice paired with the horns and rocking guitar riffs is pure magic. One of their covers, Joe Cocker’s, “With a little help from my friends”, was by far, the best I have seen and heard live. They also covered “I’m a Ram” by Al Green, which was later brought back to life from my all-time favorite band, Gov’t Mule. Please check out this phenomenal band if the opportunity arises. They are amazing and very entertaining on stage. The Commonheart is currently working on a new album that will be released soon. Their music is available at http://www.thecommonheart.com and on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon. The next day was packed with some more great music. We got off to a late start but were able to catch the Harrisburg band, Yam Yam, at Little Buffalo’s Arts & Music Festival in Newport. These guys have the coolest groove that mixes Jazz and Funk “Junk” with some R&B groove. I really enjoyed watching these guys play. They formed in 2015 and members include Mike Dempsey: Keys, Tom Fuller: Guitar, Tyler Fuller: Drums, Jason Mescia:

Sax and Xander Moppin: Bass. Their self-titled debut album is set to be released on November 21st. They will also be performing that same night at The Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company on Cameron St in Harrisburg. I am very excited to pick up my copy! Next on stage was someone I did not recognize until my friend Jarrod pointed out who he played with. The Cris Jacobs Band are from the Baltimore Xander Moppin area. They play Bluegrass, Americana Soul with a little funk and they were amazing. Once I put the pieces together I was blown away. Some of you jam/blues fans may know him from being in the band The Bridge that has released 5 records. Cris also released a solo album in 2012 titled ‘Songs for Cats and Dogs” and another in 2016 titled ‘Dust to Gold’. He has toured and played with several big names like Steve Winwood, Sturgill Simpson, Phil Lesh, Leftover Salmon, Anders Osborne and so many more. In 2017, Cris recorded a collaborative album with Ivan Neville under the band name ‘Neville Jacobs’. A huge thank you goes out to the entire crew and volunteers at Little Buffalo’s Arts and Music Festival. The amount of time and effort given every year, to put together this free, public event and great new music is extraordinary. We then headed to HarrisChris Jacobs burg to Club XL to check out Who’s Bad, The Ultimate Micontinued on page 15....

this band. She stated “I have seen this band perform a few times. They are an eccentric, quirky group of talented musicians that leave you asking yourself ‘what did I just see’ while wanting more. Every time I see them it’s very entertaining and I can’t wait to see them again”. Thanks Abby! I couldn’t have worded it better! Finally, Berndsen, from Reykjavik, Iceland took the stage. chael Jackson Experience. Before Who’s Bad went on stage, we saw the opening group M3G also known as Melodic Minds Music Group from York. These guys were so much fun! They are a Hip Hop, R&B, Soul, Pop group. They started out with some old school covers like ‘My Prerogative’ by Bobby Brown and ‘Poison’ by Bell Biv Devoe along with a few newer songs and originals. They had everyone up dancing and having fun. They formed in 2012 and members include Anthony Dorm, Jarrett Kinard, Manny Feliciano and Courtney Kinard. Courtney was not able to make this performance but the 3 guys put on a heck of a show. Great job guys! Next up at Club XL was Who’s Bad, The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience from Chapel Hill, NC. They are the world’s longest running Michael Jackson Tribute Band and have been going for the last 14 years. They are also the only musical and dance group to predate Michael’s passing. You can tell these guys paid special attention and studied every move and sound of Michael Jackson and his band. We wanted to give a special thank you to owner, Phil, of Club XL and Manager, Chris, for
M3G er, Guitarist and Kiki: Drummer are from Lewistown. Justin Casper: Bass and Justin Aurand: Keys are from Danville. Rich Price also joined them on guitar for a few songs and he is from Harrisburg area. This was their very first performance all together and they are already working on their first album! Talk about enthusiasm! They sang a great mix of originals and cover songs from Van Morrison, Goo Goo Dolls and Bob Dylan. They also

Sam Pryze covered some Violent Femmes which was really cool. I am glad we were there to see their first performance and really look forward to seeing this group grow. They are good and have what it takes to be great. Great first gig guys and keep it going! To end the month, we were excited to go to The Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg to meet up with

their hospitality. We always have a great time at Club XL! After leaving Club XL we decided we would meet up with some friends at Stoney Creek Inn, in Dauphin, for their final show before closing their deck. We only got to see the last few songs from The Mighty River Band but will definitely be catching a full show in the near future. We really enjoyed what we heard. They cover songs from The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Allman Brothers, Phish, Dylan and more. The members have all been playing for many years but only formed this group about 3 years ago after getting together to explore compositions of the Grateful Dead. They had a couple jam sessions on Shelley Island along the Susquehanna River and people started showing up as if it were a concert. They were involved in some fundraisers for “Save the Islands” and were approached several times to play shows, festivals and private parties. Members include Josh Thompson: Guitar, Vocals, Aaron Daniel Gaul (ADG): Guitar, Vocals, John Bigham (JB): Keys, Marcy Thompson: Vocals, Jeremy Pierce: Bass, Travis Bossler: Percussion and Michael Culp: Drums. JB was not able to make this show but Mike Zook filled in for him. On October 19th, we made a stop to eat at River Bend Hops and Brewery. It is a really cool, century-old barn that was turned into a brewery and taproom. It’s located outside of Newport along the Juniata River. They opened their doors in September 2017 and are a great family-friendly place to kick back, listen to live music and grab a bite to eat. If you haven’t made it to this venue yet, I recommend checking it out. While eating, we caught the band Sam Pryze and the Never County Band. The band members are from all over Central PA. The Mighty River Band a band from Iceland, Berndsen. Before we get to them, I wanted to mention the two bands that performed before them. Warning, conservativeness should be checked at the door. This type of show requires an open mind and included adult content, not intended for the meek or young children. I’m not sure I was even prepared for what I was about to witness when we walked in the door. First on stage was Big Gorgeous. They are a newly formed act from San Francisco, CA, originally from the Harrisburg area, and are wrapping up a tour with Berndsen throughout the U.S. To sum them up, I would say they are an entertaining, theatrical, musical duo that some really enjoyed while others watched with one-eye open. They are sure to give you a shocking experience. Next up was a band called Knitebitch from New Berlin, PA. In an effort to keep things fresh, I thought I would let one of the audience members give their take on the next band. I Big Gorgeous asked fan Abby Christensen about her take on watching

ple years ago for a private party that Chris had the privilege of photographing. We got to spend the weekend with them and I can honestly say they are truly the nicest, sweetest guys you will ever meet. Earlier this year, they completed their first U.S. tour and we got to catch them at The Facktory in Liverpool, PA. They decided to wrap up the year with a 2nd U.S. tour. When we heard they were going to be in Harrisburg, we made it a point to see them. Members include David Berndsen: Vocals. Hrafnkell Gauti Siguroarson: Guitar and Sveinbjorn Thorarensen, better known as Hermigervill, or Svein as we call him: Synthesizer, Drum Machine. Their genre is new wave, 80’s synth-pop. Pennsylvania Musician Magazine
Although there was a point earlier this year when its future was not certain, Pennsylvania Musician Magazine has survived to reach another anniversary! Hats off to Josh Noll for picking up the reins and continuing this publication’s legacy of serving the state’s music industry and community, as well as the magazine’s founding couple, Whitey and Robin Noll! A succession of annual fairs and fall festivals brought the curtain down on the outdoor live music season through late September and last month. The annual Harmony Grange Fair near Westover featured nightly live music for most of its weeklong festivities. I took in part of Friday’s entertainment, Pittsburgh-based country recording artist Justin Fabus and his band. Having recently issued his full-length debut album, Remedy, Justin did songs off the album, along with select country and classic rock favorites. He opened the performance with the album’s leadoff track “Pick Me Up,” and he also did the single “Come Around” plus several more. Citing Bruce Springsteen as an inspiration, Justin and his band did a version of “Hungry Heart,” and also offered their own takes on such numbers as “Six Days on the Road,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps,” Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” and more. Justin offered a sturdy voice and outgoing personality up front, and his band sounded tight and energetic behind him. An arriving thunderstorm cut his initial set short. At press time, Justin had been invited to attend the 52nd annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards in Nashville on Nov. 14. Two ethnic-flavored festivals took place in late September. The fourth annual Johnstown Slavic Festival took place at Johnstown’s Heritage Discovery Center, and featured a day of Slavic and Hungarian food, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, a Hungarian nut roll contest, and music and dance performances. I arrived in time to witness the last two musical acts, Harmonia and the West Philadelphia Orchestra. Cleveland’s Harmonia was on stage as I arrived. Six members strong, Harmonia performed a variety of Hungarian, Bulgarian, Slavic and Romanian folk and gypsy numbers with their distinctive blend of instrumentation, which included accordion, cimbalom (Hungarian dulcimer), violin, upright bass, percussion, various woodwinds and more. Harmonia’s performance triggered dancing through much of their set. Closing out the day was the West Philadelphia Orchestra, who brought an energetic blend of Balkan and jazz sounds, powered with a punk furor. Nine members strong this night including trumpet, saxophone, baritone, sousaphone, clarinet, percussion and vocals, West Philadelphia Orchestra kept it lively and fun from start to end, prompting dancing along the way. For their finale, the group stepped off the stage and ventured out into the crowd, delivering just as much brassy volume without amplification. The music, coupled with the variety of food, art and celebration of Slavic heritage, made the Johnstown Slavic Festival an enjoyable, educational event. The following day, Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton presented their 29th annual Italian Food & Heritage Festival. Italian food and music took the spotlight; this year’s headlining performers were New York’s Micheal Castaldo and his band. During the second of two performances, Micheal shined with his prominent voice and showmanship, leading his band on a wide variety of sounds ranging from pop and rock’n’roll standards (some sung in Italian) to Italian song favorites, jazz and more. Some of the bigger surprises included Italian language takes on the Doobie Brothers’ “Long Train Runnin’” and The Turtles’ “Elenore” (“Scende la pioggia,” a cover done by Gianni Morandi). They also did versions of Henry Mancini’s “Peter Gunn Theme,” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” (sung by the group’s drummer), plus Italian standards like “O Sole Mio,” “Funiculi Funicula” and others. Also capturing attention this day was 6-year-old western PAbased opera singer Victory Brinker. This youngster not only showed an incredible, operatic voice, but sang and enunciated clearly in Italian as well. She presented her song selections with enthusiasm and no fear; one can only imagine the heights this young lady may achieve as she continues on her musical path. And the strolling western PA-based father-and-son duo of Ben and Matt Faiella played guitar and mandolin respectively, serenading audiences and passers-by with traditional Italian folk instrumentals. continued on page 17...

THE PROFESSOR continued..... During their season-closing Harvestfest the following weekend, Delgrosso’s Amusement Park featured entertainment from the Martin Family Circus. Based in Nashville, this unique family band features Paul Martin, former singer and guitarist for national recording group Exile; his wife, Jamie, the daughter of Oak Ridge Boys singer Duane Allen; and their four children – 20-year-old March on vocals and guitar, 17-year-old Kell on keys and vocals, 12-year-old Texas behind the drum kit, and 11-year-old Tallant on vocals, tambourine and acoustic guitar. The Martin Family Circus – who recently changed their name to Rockland Road – mixed up a broad spectrum of rock’n’roll, pop, country favorites and original songs. Selections included the Kell-fronted version of Don Henley’s “In a New York Minute,” Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis,” Chicago’s “Wishing You Were Here,” the Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing.” They tapped the Exile library for “I Got Love (Super Duper Love)” and the Oak Ridge Boys’ mega-hit “Elvira,” brought youngsters from the audience onstage to help sing Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” and spotlighted Texas’ drumming talents during The Who’s “I Can See for Miles.” The group will issue their first EP as Rockland Road soon. Altoona’s zombie apocalypse returned early last month with the third annual Zombietown USA festival. The two-day event commenced with the Friday evening “Dead” at Five kickoff concert at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. Local Black Sabbath tribute group Hand Of Doom opened with an impressive performance of early Black Sabbath favorites. Singer Mark Oswalt, guitarist Matt Wineland, bassist Todd Batzel and drummer Dan McConnell fired up zombies and the uninfected alike with powerful takes on “The Wizard,” “N.I.B.,” “Iron Man,” “Fairies Wear Boots,” “Sweet Leaf,” “Symptom of the Universe” into “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” their title tune “Hand of Doom” and more. Agent Smith then reprised their ‘Agent In Chains’ tribute to Alice In Chains to finish the night. Singer Steve Oswalt, singer/guitarist Phil “Philly Grooves” Wagner, guitarist Kirk Robison, bassist Rich Johnson and drummer Shawn Gioiosa did stunning work over two sets on numbers from throughout the Layne Staley era of Alice In Chains. Agent In Chains accurately
captured the firepower and vocal harmonies on numbers such as “We Die Young,” “Them Bones,” “Dam That River,” “Down in a Hole,” “Sea of Sorrow,” “It Ain’t Like That,” “No Excuses,” “Got Me Wrong,” “Heaven Beside You,” “Would?” and more. Steve dedicated “Rooster” to his late father; and after the group closed their tribute with “Man in the Box,” reverted back to Agent Smith to do numbers from Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, The Cult, and Iron Maiden’s “Two Minutes to Midnight.” Zombietown USA resumed on Saturday at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza (across the railroad tracks from the Railroaders Museum) with a daytime festival featuring various food and craft vendors, zombie-themed games and activities, a meetand-greet with celebrities from the zombie film Dawn of the Dead, a Halloween parade and live music. Off-and-on rains did not dampen crowd or spirits, as onlookers took in performances from The Backyard Rockers, Elaini Arthur, Lillian Avenue (the newly-christened duo of singer/guitarist Jae Smith and drummer Tyke Dodson), Downshift, One Adam 12, Post Traumatik and Hair Force One. Heritage Plaza also played host to the inaugural Cre814 Fest in late September, which brought musicians and other artists together to share their creations. Local artisans, businesses and food vendors represented their wares and creations throughout the plaza, and children were given opportunities to create sidewalk chalk art and other endeavors. Music happened on three stages; I was able to catch parts of performances from the Nag Champions Mystery Band, Eric Delozier, Well Traveled Music and Jason Gamble. Cre814 Fest was well-attended and a big success, and is likely to return next year. Ebensburg celebrated the spud at their 27th annual Potatofest in late September. This festivus of potato-based foods, arts and crafts featured four different stages of musical entertainment at various points around downtown Ebensburg. As I first arrived and started making my tour of potato-based edibles, I first encountered Johnstown’s Jeff Perigo and Friends, performing at the gazebo at Penn Eben Park. Jeff on lead vocals and guitar, Andy Jenkins on guitar and vocals, Scott Jeffreys on bass and Seth Shumaker on mandolin played a blend of classic rock and folk songs. Some of their selection included versions of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Snake Farm,” Bobby Womack’s “It’s All Over Now,” Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl,” traditional numbers

such as “Old Dan Tucker” and “I Know You Rider,” and more. As I was first walking uphill toward the festival, I could hear the unmistakable sound of “Miss Melanie” Morrison Zeigler’s high-flying voice from several blocks away, so my next musical destination at Potatofest was seeing Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats as they completed their performance at the Main Tent at the intersection of Center and High Streets. Melanie, guitar master Mark Ross, keyboardist Rev. James Harton and drummer Chris Coyne mixed up hearty blues and soul, including songs from their upcoming new album, established favorites and more. It was fun to observe the reactions of first-time onlookers as they discovered Miss Melanie’s passionate and soulful voice reaching for the heavens, as well as the Valley Rats’ instrumental tightness, taste and precision. I next caught my first look at Johnstown-based indie folk duo The Evergreens as they entertained at the Memorial Park Tent. Singer/guitarist Laurel Harrison and drummer Amanda Alt performed fresh takes on a variety of classics, including a few surprises I wasn’t expecting – such as their take on Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” and creative versions of Blind Melon’s “No Rain,” Jackie Wilson’s “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher,” Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight,” Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” and more. A local Cambria County-based rock band named Fuse has played this event in recent years, but a Pittsburgh-based Fuse made their Potatofest debut this year at the Penn Eben gazebo. This family-based group features bassist, singer and dad Joe Hazy, continued on page 18...

Classic rock is this group’s forte, as they lit the ‘fuse’ on numbers from The Who, Tom Petty, the Doors, Stevie Nicks, Cream, Queen and more. I next stepped away from the main festival briefly, strolling downhill on High Street to local craft brewers Coal Country Brewing to enjoy a pumpkin ale and Dan Stonerook, as he strummed and sang his mix of folk, country, rock classics and original songs. I then returned to Potatofest to catch the tail end of Flood City Brass’ feisty, horn-driven performance at the Main Tent, before returning to the Memorial Park Tent stage to see Koz. Namesake Matt “Koz” Kozlovac on vocals and guitar, guitarist/singer Tom Ondek, bassist Matt Peterson and drummer Andrew Baumann played classic rock favorites from Steve Miller Band, Eric Clapton, Eagles, Allman Brothers and more. I ventured across state lines early last month to visit Berkeley Springs, West Virginia’s 45th annual Apple Butter Festival, and took in the performance of local folk and bluegrass favorites Marv Ashby & High Octane. Namesake Marv on acoustic guitar, banjo player Jack VanOrden, fiddler Larry Crawford and Tom Gray on upright bass (filling in for the group’s regular bass player, ‘Beardie,’ who is on the mend from health issues) performed a mixture of bluegrass, string music, folk and early country sounds. The group took a casual approach to this performance, having fun as they mixed vocal numbers and instrumental workouts. Their instrumental skills were constantly on display, with each band member given the spotlight to show their talents. Some highlights included a “Dueling Banjos”-rooted jam, Jack displaying his calm baritone voice on Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm” and Flatt & Scruggs’ “The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” versions of Ralph Stanley’s “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” the depression-era “Breadline Blues” and more. Alexandria in Huntingdon County hosted its 43rd annual Hartslog Day Heritage Festival last month. Off-and-on raindrops didn’t thwart multitudes from enjoying multiple arts, crafts and food vendors, children’s activities, tours of the Hartslog Museum, and live musical entertainment. With my own band, the Backyard Rockers, scheduled to close out the festival’s live mu-

sic slate, I arrived early to take in several of the other performers. Local favorite Anita Roseborough was performing as I arrived, singing and strumming acoustic guitar on a mixture of pop, folk and gospel numbers, and welcoming family and friends to join her. Her sister, Regina Miller, joined her on a rendition of Kenny Loggins’ “House at Pooh Corner, while a guest named Carol helped sing on John Denver’s “Wild Montana Skies,” and another guest, Peggy, sang on the set-closing gospel number “In This Very Room.” The Unusual Suspects String Band followed with their blend of string music, bluegrass and folk sounds. Led by the husband and wife core of R.B. Powell on banjo and Bridget Allen on acoustic guitar, the Unusual Suspects did numbers such as Buck Owens’ “Stony Mountain West Virginia,” Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Rocky Top” and more. Next was Silver Creek, who performed a mix of country and rock favorites. Lead singer David Beck, guitarist Brett Rodkey, bassist Ed Ward and a 14-year-old drummer named Jake did strong work on tunes from Hank Williams Jr., Kenny Chesney, Poison, The Cult and more. I caught entertainment on the final day of last month’s two-weekend Bedford Fall Foliage Festival in downtown Bedford. I first encountered The Evergreens again – this time as strolling performers – as they played near Fort Bedford Museum and the Juniata River. After catching their takes on favorites from Billy Joel, Tom Petty and The Shirelles, I then headed to the River Stage to catch the tail end of the Jeff Fetterman Band. From Erie, this trio – namesake Jeff on lead vocals and guitar, Ralph Reitinger III on bass and John McGuire on drums – scorched blues-rock originals and covers. I witnessed as they finished their performance with a Pink Floyd “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”-based jam and a fiery read on Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile.” Earlier this year, the Jeff Fetterman Band represented the Blues Society of Western PA and made it to the semifinals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. I next proceeded to the downtown Gazebo stage for the annual appearance by 1960s hitmaker Chuck Blasko and The Vogues. One of The Vogues’ founding members, Chuck led the group on Vogues hits and a variety of pop, rock and soul hits of the 1960s and 1970s. Supported by a backing band, Chuck, Sean Moran and Tim Scott blended for strong two and three-part harmonies as they sang Vogues hits such as “You’re the One” and “Turn Around, Look at Me,” as well as favorites from the Four Seasons, The Rascals, The Miracles, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and their rousing, show-closing take on Lionel Richie’s “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Chuck announced that he and The Vogues will be back for next year’s Fall Foliage Festival. Indoors, McGarvey’s hosted the returns of two popular touring roots-based acts in recent weeks. Virginia’s Hackensaw Boys returned in late September, performing their upbeat brand of bluegrass and string music. Singer/guitarist David Sickmen guided the party, rallying the dance floor and sharing quips and humor along the way. Ferd Moyse showed some amazing fiddle work along the way. And this is the group with the “charismo,” the makeshift percussion instrument made from tin cans and other household items that can generate a percussion sound. ‘Bo’ was jangling the charismo while working a kick drum to provide the

rhythm. The Hackensaw Boys did tunes from throughout their catalog, and kept the crowd lively from start to end. Then when they reached the end of their onstage performance, the group took a quick break before returning to the dance floor to do a couple of songs in the middle of the crowd without amplification. Local bluegrass favorites Mama Corn opened the evening. And Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band returned to McGarvey’s in late September with their boisterous brand of roots-flavored blues. After local roots punk group Black Ridge PABG and Shane Speal & the Snakes opened the night, the Hoosier state trio of Rev. Peyton on various guitars, his wife “Washboard” Breezy Peyton on washboard and bass drum, and Max Senteney on drums (including an inverted 5-gallon maple syrup bucket) played a wild mix of original songs, rooted in early Mississippi delta blues. Rev. Peyton delivered a big, bold growl up front plus amazing slide guitarwork, and the group delivered a raw, uninhibited sound on songs off their new Poor Until Payday album such as the punchy title track, “You Can’t Steal My Shine,” “Dirty Swerve,” “Get the Family Together” and “It Is or It Ain’t.” Rev. Peyton borrowed a cigar box guitar from Shane Speal for a rendition of “Boll Weevil,” and when the house demanded an encore, he and the group responded with the songs “Two Bottles of Wine” and “We Deserve a Happy Ending.” The Hungry Duck Eatery in Roaring Spring recently has begun to host live music, and I caught up with The Lawn Darts there in late September. Providing music that “sticks in your ear,” The Lawn Darts mixed a wide variety of classic rock’n’roll during their three sets. Their music was sharp and on point; Mark Sny-

The group threw in a few surprises, such as Otis Rush’s “Homework,” Roy Head’s “Treat Her Right,” Cliff Richard’s “Devil Woman” and the Doobie Brothers’ “Jesus Is Just Alright.” Mark, Marvin, Kim and Chris all shared singing duties; all sounded fine on the vocal front, and The Lawn Darts executed like a well-oiled machine on their respective instruments. The Hungry Duck crowd enjoyed the show, and a number of folks were up and dancing throughout the night. I checked out Johnstown area rockers Orange Fire last month as they lit the flame to some rock’n’roll at Slammin’ Sam’s in Johnstown. generated the rock’n’roll party with favorites from Journey, ZZ Top, Stray Cats, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Melissa Etheridge, Doobie Brothers, BTO and more. Both Ginger and Nathan showed fine voices up front, and did a nice duet on Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks’ “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Ginger also did great work on Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and the night-ending version of Scandal’s “Goodbye to You.” The big surprise for me, though, was when Orange Fire broke out a forgotten gem from the 1980s, Fastway’s “Say What You Will!” Orange Fire drew some dancers onto the floor and brought the good time; they return to Slammin’ Sam’s on Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 21. Johnstown’s Black Cat Moan brought their brand of “new vintage blues” to the Altoona Grand Hotel in late September. Singer/harmonica player T.K. Mundok, guitarist George Byich

and drummer Rob Bonsell applied their distinctive jazz-meetsblues approach to original songs, blues and classic rock favorites. The group did various selections off their CD The Saint, The Munk and The Moan, as well as songs from Muddy Waters, CCR, Allman Brothers, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, and even a bluesy slant on Tommy James & the Shondells’ “Hanky Panky!” T.K. offered some greasy licks on the harp, George displayed mastery on his resonator guitar, and Rob’s beats were tasteful and in the pocket. A large crowd appreciated Black Cat Moan’s performance; this group spreads their bluesy sounds from Altoona to Pittsburgh; give them a listen! Other performers I have seen in recent weeks include From Down the Road, Nag Champions and Shallow 9’s acoustic trio at McGarvey’s, Maryland-based party rockers Drunk After Midnight at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge, Felix & the Hurricanes during one of their weekly Sunday shindigs at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern, acoustic duo Lauren (Johnson) & Joe (George) at the Village Tavern in Mill Creek, Dylan E. Miller and New Jersey singer/songwriter Anna Oh at Boxer’s Café in Huntingdon, and plentiful musicians at the weekly Wednesday Open Mic Night at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society. HATE GRENADE – THE KING IS DEAD (no label) Altoona’s Hate Grenade returns with a volatile vengeance on their second full-length CD (and third recording overall), The King Is Dead. The Hate Grenade contingent of frontman Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera, drummer Mike Powers and new bassist Donny Death detonates full fury over the disc’s ten tracks, picking up where their previous CD, 2015’s Pull the Pin, left off. But the group ups the ante, blending their nu-metal/rapcore aggression with a few new twists. Monk-like chants usher in the title track disc-opener, “The King Is Dead,” which detonates full force with pulsing guitar riffage, concussive drum thunder and Jeff’s raps and rage; the song is symbolic, with the ‘king’ representing forces that overpower people and must be countered and conquered. Hate Grenade bristles with renewed intensity on numbers such as “Burn,” “Reborn,” the cautionary “Watch Your Back” and “Bad Blood.” But Jeff interrupts his escalating outbursts with some singing on the chorus of the blistering “Temptress,” as well as the slower, forceful thunder of “Revelation.” And Hate Grenade indulges their hip-hop dynamic a bit further on the darker and introspective “Rue.” The song hooks work here, and the group’s arrangements and over-the-top explosiveness give listeners no choice but to pay full attention. Hate Grenade unleashes everything here, delivering maximum passion and intensity in their performances. Self-recorded and produced by the band, The King Is Dead sounds busy and caustic; the rhythms boom, the guitars snarl, and clever use of distortion and effects lends a chaotic dynamic to the overall sound, giving the album edge and unpredictability. Hate Grenade raises the bar on their visceral brand of nu-metal on The King Is Dead, in the process delivering their most impressive and incendiary set yet. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.hategrenade.com.) JEFF MAMETT – CARRY ME BACK (no label) Jeff Mamett established on his 2015 debut CD, Here’s Your Hat, that his music is rooted in the classic country and western traditions of Hank Williams, Guy Clark, Lefty Frizzell and others. His songs often angle toward themes of simpler times and taking stock; the reflective disc-opener “Poor House Road” recalls warm memories from a meager childhood, while the relaxed “Take It Slow” shares life lessons about not hurrying and letting things take their due course. Love at first sight powers the upbeat honky-tonk of the catchy “Bing Bang Boom,” while a body movement inspires the playful Texas two-steppin’ “Jiggle in Her Wiggle.” Jeff uses clever wordplay to craft a story arc of mischievous childhood to family man on the folksy “Off and Runnin,’” and considers the time wasted dwelling on negative thoughts on the blues-toned “Spinnin’ My Wheels.” Tex-Mex flavors inform “Dark Spanish Eyes” with its prominent, driving beat, while Jeff dabbles in Cajun and zydeco elements on “Feels Like Love.” And for those who want some western with their country, there is the faster-paced disc-closer “An Outlaw’s Song,” which weaves a story of gambling, gunplay and outrunning the law. Jeff’s rich voice is front and center here, as his relaxed, assuring cadence sells his words and makes them sound sincere. Jeff’s friend and Trace Adkins’ pedal steel player, Wayne Addleman, produced the album, while three other members of Adkins’ band – drummer John Richardson plus guitarists Brian Wooten and Brent Wilson – help flesh out the sound along with the additions of fiddle, mandolin, accordion and backing vocals. The result is a strong, satisfying listen from start to end – Jeff Mamett carries the torch for country tradition on Carry Me Back, making classic-flavored country sound fresh and vibrant again. (The CD can be purchased through Jeff’s website, www. jeffmamett.com.) 13 SAINTS – TO THE FLOOR (no label) On their sophomore full-length CD, To the Floor, Pittsburgh’s 13 Saints resume their punk’n’roll party where their 2016 debut CD, Crushing Copper, left off. Guitarists Dave Buzard and Ernie Dirt (since replaced by Davey Child), bassist Creep Newholland and drummer Eric Corbin again deliver rowdy, punk-infused rock’n’roll over the disc’s baker’s dozen tracks. The songs are sharp and catchy, and ride the middle ground between Rolling Stones swagger and Clash and Iggy & the Stooges sass and attitude. As the group proclaimed on the first album, they “don’t do deep,” and thus the
lyrics here are again straightforward and in-your-face, with touches of wry wit and cynicism. Some of their wordplays are classic; 13 Saints fights off old age on the boisterous opener “Woe Is Me,” battling to escape “…the land of candy and rocking chairs.” The group addresses today’s contentious society on “Laugh It Off,” with advice to chill out because “…everybody knows the score.” And on “Suburbs,” they salute dysfunctional life in the land of “strip clubs/strip malls,” just “kickin’ around the house/kickin’ around the spouse.” The group also channels classic Free as they dress down a drama queen on “Princess Calamity,” tip their hats to a 1970s glam/punk influence on the romping “New York Doll,” diss obsessive hurried-up lifestyles on “Godspeed,” and spit vinegar on those who ignore history’s lessons via the fast-flying disc-closer “History of Present Illness.” 13 Saints plays these songs with purpose; the rhythms jump, the guitars snarl, and the vocals sound appropriately acidic and ascerbic. Produced by the group and recorded at Very Tight Recordings, To the Floor is raw and direct, leaving the songs and performances do the talking with minimal studio polish. To the Floor offers all-out, accelerated rock’n’roll fun, as 13 Saints put pedal to the metal and spit out some vinegar and attitude along the way. 1974 ~ 2018 Alan “Delbert” McConnell passed away on October 15, following a valiant two-year battle with cancer. He was 44. Alan played bass in different bands and situations, and ran sound and lights for shows and events, including a number of benefit shows such as Patched Together, Patton Park Cruise In and more. He was generous with his services and time, and was among the first to offer his help in situations of need. Alan is survived by his wife, Patricia, and three children. We at the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine share our condolences with Alan’s family, friends and musical associates, it is a great loss for the music community.

alyptic Blues,” while “Is It Over” looks to the sky for answers. Steve also taps into a spiritual blues flavor on “Hold Steady on That Line” and the disc’s hopeful closing number, “Glory Bound.” The songs are solid and alluring, and Steve’s performances on voice and instruments are strong throughout. Self-recorded and produced, Nothing sounds clear and full, varying between simple acoustic arrangements and deeper, more orchestrated mixes. Overall, this CD works as a cohesive set; Nothing provides a look into Steve Treado’s musical realm, and establishes him as a capable songwriter with a strong foundation in blues and Americana. (The CD can be obtained through Steve’s website, www. stevetreado.com.) WILLOW HILL – HIGHWAY ONE EP (no label) Willow Hill is the country-driven alter ego of Lovebettie’s leading couple, guitarist C.T. Fields and singer/keyboardist Alexandra Naples. The Pittsburgh pair’s debut EP, Highway One, introduces five songs
easily at home in country twang. C.T.’s guitar work still sounds hearty, and – assisted by a cast of Nashville hired guns, plus produced by Zach Abend and executive producer Jeff Cohen (who has worked with Sugarland, Big & Rich and The Band Perry) – Willow Hill sounds strong and confident. The disc’s opening track, “Don’t Let the Door Hit Ya,” packs punch as a thundering, catchy country rocker with Alexandra delivering vocal sass and vinegar while giving the bum’s rush to a lying, unfaithful drunk. (A radio-friendly version of this song ends the EP.) Alexandra’s piano tones help anchor the more wistful “More Like a Memory” and its theme of longing and heartache. Alexandra displays her dynamic vocal range and soulfulness on the ballad “Can’t Have My Best,” and the group picks up the tempo on the country-rocker “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time” and the punchy “Bullet.” The performances are lively, inspired and tightly executed; while the mix sounds full, clean and polished. Highway One establishes a new adventure for C.T. and Alexandra, and Willow Hill’s opening chapter is a competent, promising foray into country flavors. (The CD can be obtained through the website www.willowhillmusic.com.)
