Well its time for another issue. It is hard to believe that October is here and we are all starting the process of preparing for the cold winter months ahead. This month has been crazy quick as I have been gearing up for a bicycling trip on the Cumberland Gap Trail with some friends. Should be a fun three day trip if the weather gods are in my favor. Although with the rainy summer we have had I find it hard to believe we will get three days in a row without rain but I will keep my fingers crossed and my rain gear close. In this issue we are welcoming a new column once again. This won’t be a monthly thing but its a glimpse into the future of what the PA Musician Magazine can bring. It is an article written by ZACK “Rocks”. He will be the third generation of our clan to write an article for the paper and I think it is awesome that the paper has strived on and has been here for that long. Seems like last year that little Zack was born but he is now learning to drive and working towards becoming a motorhead like his uncle Josh. Please check out his article and see what the youth is up to. October is stacking up to be a great month in music. The Racehorse Tavern has a full schedule of events with a two day Autism Benefit happening Oct. 19th-20th. The benefit has a stacked line up for both days with all your favorite tribute bands rocking out for a good cause. Club XL once again is bringing in some new and exciting acts to our area. On the 6th its Who’s Bad, The Ultimate Tribute to Michael Jackson, later in the month they are bringing Pink Talking Fish, Bullet Boys w/ Enuff Z Nuff, Zoso w/ Leadfoot and Roadcase supporting and much more. Since I have started putting the paper together I have seen all the hard work bands are putting out there to keep the music alive and well in our area. One of the things a lot of people ask me is where are all the original bands? I feel the answer is all around you but you have to take the time to go see these local bands and check out the music they are putting out there for us. There are tons of new Cd Releases out there and I challenge everyone to go BUY the cd’s or purchase the album online to help show the bands that the work they do doesn’t go unnoticed. I went out to see SIX BAR BREAK over the weekend the new Cd is awesome these guys put a lot of hard work in and it shows. Great work guys! Chrome Hearts also has a new Cd they just released, Rascal Revival has a debut EP available and the list goes on and on. So I challenge all the readers to at least purchase one Cd either online or in person at a show. Put it in the Cd player or your “device” of choice and enjoy!

MADE IN AMERICA FESTIVAL REVIEW by Zack Jr. Reporter

Hello my name is Zack. I’m writing this special edition article because of an awesome concert I got the chance to go to, the Made in America Festival in Philly. I first heard about the Made in America Festival when I was listening to Juice WRLD on YouTube. I’ve been listening to Rap music for a little over a year now and Lil Skies and Juice WRLD are my favorite artists, and after I checked out the Made in America Festival I saw they were BOTH going to be there. I couldn’t believe they were both coming to PA, I just knew I had to go! I asked Mom if I could go, and told her that it would be the best birthday present EVER. I really wanted me and my friend Jake to go alone, but Mom said No. She sneakily reached out to the promoters of the festival and to my HUGE surprise, they sent us an email and said we could come to the festival, me as a Junior Reporter, and Mom as my photographer. I’m extremely thankful to the Mitch Schneider Organization (MSO) for this amazing opportunity. Not only did I get to go to the festival, but we also had our own special entrance, and we had special access to the stage areas too. It is definitely a day I will never forget. We only got to go to one day of the festival, unfortunately Lil Skies played the 2nd day so I didn’t get to see him perform, but I did get to see quite a few artists. Altogether they had at least 71 different artists perform over two days and four stages. It was so cool how they had the four stages and music was playing somewhere all day long. When we got there we headed to the Liberty Stage to see 6lack. Even though it was one of the smaller stages it was crazy to see how the sea of people went on forever. 6lack did not disappoint. It was cool to see everyone singing along to the lyrics and enjoying the music. I couldn’t believe how great the sound was at every stage. Everything was top notch! I couldn’t wait to check out the main stage later! After 6lack it was time for Juice WRLD!! Juice WRLD released a big hit, “Lucid Dreams” back in May and since then his career has rocketed. They had him on one of the smallest stages, the Tidal Stage, and we were all squished in there as tight as we could be. It wasn’t really a bad thing, it was actually a lot of fun. I never experienced so many people loving the same music. I was singing along and recording as many videos on my phone as possible. He played “Black and White” and “Lean Wit Me” (which was the first song I ever liked of his, so that was extra cool.) He obviously played “Lucid Dreams” and of course the crowd went crazy! That song has had over 166 Million views since May! I really don’t think they thought Juice WRLD had such a following, hopefully next year he’ll be on a bigger stage so even more people can enjoy the show! The next artist and our first experience on the main stage, was Meek Mill. Meek Mill is from Northern Philly, so he had the home court advantage. Meek Mill is one of my brother’s favorite artists, so I took some special videos for him to watch later. It was cool to see Meek Mill share the stage with some other up and coming Philly artists, giving them their time to shine. Meek Mill put on a great show and had me even more excited to see Post Malone later in the night. continued on page 12....

October article already!?! How is that even possible? It’s amazing how the first day of Fall came and I immediately had to put on a hoodie. I do like slightly cooler days, but I’m still hoping for an Indian Summer. I’m not completely done with Summer yet, especially since we didn’t really have a Summer, just a Rain… Speaking of which I hope everyone is dry and safe, or at least recovering. I know I’ve seen quite a few benefits for flood victims popping up. Keep your eyes out and if you can, please get out there and support them. It’s crazy how the flash flooding effected so many people that don’t even live anywhere close to a major waterway! I know we had a crazy couple of days just trying to get the magazines delivered. I can’t imagine having a house or business under water. One night of the flooding I managed to get over to the Park Inn/ Blarney’s to check out Rattletrap Jack. These guys are an up and coming band from the Williamsport area that have been sneaking down this way, and I’m glad they are! They are so good and so refreshing. As a group they might be ‘new’ but as musicians, they definitely are not. They’ve all played in bands for a few years and their music definitely shows their talents. They play intriguing originals and covers. A lot of bands say they play songs that no one else does, but I can tell you, that’s definitely true with these guys. When I was trying to explain their genre of music I said it was like Cajun-country, Southern Rock, but they actually describe themselves as Hickabilly! Whatever it is I can tell you it will definitely get you up dancing, boot scootin, and everything in between and beyond! If you want to hear a band with some refreshing music, check out Rattletrap Jack. The next day I was in for an adventure! For my son’s 16th birthday, he said if I wanted to make it the best birthday ever I would get him tickets to the Made in America Festival in Philly. He originally said he wanted me to get tickets for him and his friend Jake, but I said no way am I letting you go to Philly alone, so I decided to email the promoters and to my surprise the Mitch Schneider Organization (MSO) invited us come in as Press. They let Zack come in as a Jr. Reporter and I was his photographer. It was definitely a day and experience we will never forget. I am very thankful to everyone hosting/staffing the event that made Zack feel so welcome. I was impressed by the event as a whole! It was so well organized, even with 4 different stages and 1,000s of people! Early in the day I asked how many

tickets have been sold and at that point it was already at 15,000 and it was still early on Day 1, it was a two-day festival. I was definitely one of the oldest people there, but it was an awesome experience to see Zack have so much fun. To read all about the festival please check out Zack’s first Jr. Reporter article about his Made In America Festival Experience in this issue. The next weekend started out with a Friday night trip to Chick’s in Hummelstown for Banished for Life. The word in the venue is that after their next few gigs Banished for Life will be no more. It is heartbreaking because these guys are always tons of fun to watch. They just rock out to the songs they love, and obviously their fans love too! When you’ve played together for well over 20 years you form a bond unlike any other. I’m glad I made it out to one of their final shows. Even though Steve Austin is going to take some time off, Doug Geyer and Sam Sweigart will keep things rocking and our joining forces with Bob Hermanson in a new project called, the New Bad. Doug and Bob have been plucking away at the new project since 2016 and even released an EP in 2017. So obviously this will be more of an original project, but I’m sure it will still be very entertaining! The next day out was another big event, Fogleman’s 5th Annual Wounded Warrior Music Festival. I’ve been to a lot of festivals, but this one was truly one of the most organized festivals I’ve seen. In the first 4 years they’ve raised a whopping $137,000 for the PA Wounded Warriors. They feel like this was the biggest year yet, but they were still processing all of the totals as of press time. These guys literally thought of everything. The website was very thorough with easy directions. The parking was well marked and the entire festival area was lined with 100 flags, all of the flags were in honor of someone’s loved one, you could see the full list on their site, it literally gave me goosebumps when I saw them. The parking was well marked with parking attendants. The grounds themselves were all mapped out and very organized. Your ticket included all the food you can eat, and I couldn’t believe ALL of the food, non-alcoholic drinks, and even candy bars for dessert. You could BYOB which is very helpful and everyone was very respectful and having a great time. I appreciated how with the raffles they just picked the ticket and taped it to each item, so you could just go check and see if you won your baskets, etc. instead of having to sit and listen to them call off each winner and wait for them to walk up and claim their prize. It was very appreciated by a lot of people! Matt Creter from Creter Music was the Entertainment Chair and he had an amazing line-up of bands, and a great stage crew to make sure everything ran flawlessly! I arrived late in the day, but the first band I saw were Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods. They were playing some oldies but definitely had the crowd up and dancing along. They are known as a 50’s and 60’s Rock-n- Roll Party Band. There definitely aren’t many bands around that can play the big soulful hits of Chuck Berry, The Righteous Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, and more, but Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods, played the hits flawlessly. I miss the local oldies channel, Mom and I used to love listening to it, so I heard a lot of songs I listened to on long delivery days with Mom. The next band to take the stage were the Honkytonk Medics. They have been playing more and more in this area and I’ve had

the privilege of catching them play a few times before. They stepped up the music quite a few decades playing Modern Country and Southern Rock favorites. It was a beautiful day until they decided to play Luke Bryan’s song “Rain Is A Good Thing”.. and literally it started raining. I think we are all so used to rain at this point that it didn’t even phase us. The party continued and the crowd still stuck around and enjoyed the show. The last band of the night was the Matt Creter Band. I’ve heard a lot about these guys, but this was the first time I finally got to see them in action. It was unfortunately raining during their set, but again the fans weren’t phased and the show continued. They are all seasoned musicians and really played some amazing music. They only play a few shows a year, most of which as far as I know seem to be benefits. So when you see them on a bill you should really get out there and see them and support them. Their next show will be October 13th they are on the bill

This is Bobby’s Benefit Foundation’s first hosted event, and from what I’ve seen it looks like it’s going to be a great time. You can check out their ad in this issue for more information. Since the benefit was done earlyish, I decided to swing in to Double K for Booby Trap’s 20th Anniversary Show! 20 years of rock-n-roll!! They were playing a lot of their originals and had the crowd all riled up by the time I got there. It was a great night of music and their fans were out in droves to support them. If you haven’t heard Booby Trap’s original music you are really missing out. They are well written songs not only musically but lyrically as well. The lyrics sort of catch you off guard and when you are listening to them live for the first time you almost want to say, “Umm.. did you just sing what I thought you did?” The answer most likely is yes.. They are entertaining musicians for sure. If you haven’t caught a Booby Trap show yet, make sure and get out there and support them soon! The next night out was a big one at Club XL, the Metron Reunion. Now that Dad, Whitey Noll, is on Facebook he heard about the buzz from the upcoming show and decided to head out for a night on the town with Josh to see some old friends and introduce Josh to the masses. It was cool to see the shock on people’s faces when they saw Dad Out and About! He had quite a few people coming up and reminiscing about the Metron days and beyond! Swatty even brought a picture from the Devil’s Hole Jam in 1991 of Dad, John Harris, and Swatty himself. DJ Ray Rossi was hosting the event and was thrilled to see the turn out. He made sure to mention that in December they will be doing another Metron Reunion, so for anyone that missed it this time, make sure and keep your eyes out for the next Metron Reunion. continued on page 9....

OUT & ABOUT continued... Not only were the Metron fans out, but the musicians were too. The Luv Gods were playing a special night of their 80s favorites. Shea even pulled out some of The Sharks favorites that quickly had the crowd singing along. The Luv Gods put on an amazing show like usual, they also had some guest musicians throughout the night. Jimi K, Kyf Brewer, and I’m told after I left Jeffrey Gaines even showed up. Overall it was an amazing night of music and entertainment. So many old Metron Fans have been waiting a long time for a new venue that hosts bands the Metron would’ve hosted, and even bigger bands, now that they got them there, hopefully they will come back and get the live music scene moving and grooving throughout Harrisburg and beyond. The very last band of the month is Stonewood. I haven’t seen these guys and gal for a few months, but I’m so glad our paths finally crossed again! They were playing at the new Cliff’s Tavern (old Gullifty’s) in New Cumberland. It was my first time to Cliff’s and I was impressed. The sound and lights were looking and sounding marvelous, and when I got there the fans were all having a dancing, partying good time, so the bartenders and waitresses must be doing a good job too! I have to admit those Stonewood fans are some of the craziest fans I’ve seen in a long time. I saw some flips, headstands, and even a slide into home plate! There was lots of singing and dancing along. The band was having such a blast that they just played right through their set break. When Kenny, the guitar player, left the stage during the bass solo to go order drinks for the band, I knew they weren’t

stopping anytime soon. Luckily Shannon and Martini do a great job switching off lead vocals here and there so Shannon could get a break too and get out and dance with her crazy fans. Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! Ozzy Osbourne began the month by starting his “No More Tours 2” at the PPL Center in Allentown. ‘The Prince of Darkness’ said in a recent interview, “This is the last big world tour. I would still like to do one-off shows or a string of shows in the future, but as for long world tours, this is it.” The show was great and Osbourne was phenomenal, his voice sounded awesome and his energy remarkable. He began with “Bark at the Moon” followed by all the classics including three Black Sabbath songs. Osbourne will turn 70 years of age in December and plans to spend more time with his family. The present tour continues until October 13th with a final show in Las Vegas. September 8th included two National shows in one night at Philadelphia. First, alternative band Gene Loves Jezebel visited Kung Fu Necktie for an early show. The band founded by identical twin brothers Jay and Michael Aston were most known for their songs, “Jealous” “Desire (Come and Get It)” and “The Motion of Love.” There are currently two incarnations of the band due to a falling out between the Aston brothers in 1997. This night was Jay Aston’s version including original members James Stevenson and Peter Rizzo. Philadelphia was a very intimate show attended by life-long fans. Brother Michael Aston will also visit Philadelphia’s Electric Factory on September 29th at part of the Lost 80’s Live tour featuring Wang Chung, Bow Wow Wow, Naked Eyes, A Flock of Seagulls and Dramarama. It was then off for the second show of the night, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the parking lot of Electric Factory. The band appeared as part of the “215 Block Party” presented by Goose Island Beer Company. The NYC garage punk band Yeah Yeah Yeahs haven’t created any music in years and only perform one-off gigs. But they are still incredible and continue to put on one of the best concerts ever with singer Karen O unreal stage antics. Their first three albums all earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs played only two shows in 2018, this Philadelphia show and the Ohana Festival in California Lastly, FIDLAR brought their current North American 25-date tour to both Philadelphia and Washington DC. The skate punk band has been selling out many of their shows with the crowd going insane in the general admission pit. FIDLAR have gained a solid following of punk fans and always deliver with hit songs, “Cheap Beer,” “West Coast”, “No Waves” and “Cocaine.” The band is supposedly releasing a third studio album very soon. NATIONAL NEWS: After a performance of “Detroit Rock City” on the season finale of “America’s Got Talent” September 19th, KISS announced it is going on one more world tour to close out its lengthy career. There are still no dates, venues or any real specifics about the “End Of the Road World Tour.” “This will be the ultimate celebration for those who’ve seen us and a last chance for those who haven’t. KISS Army, we’re saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet and we’ll go out the same way we came in... Unapologetic and Unstoppable.” This is not the first time KISS has said goodbye, as the group did a farewell tour with its original lineup in the early 2000s, but Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons decided to keep the moniker and act alive afterwards. Depeche Mode brought an end to its Global Spirit world tour that accrued over $202 million in box office earnings during a 15-month span. The veteran English band performed for 2.5 million fans at headlining dates in stadiums, arenas and outdoor venues worldwide – as well as a half-million more at the festivals – in support of its 14th studio album ‘Spirit’. At 130 shows, it was the longest-running tour in Depeche Mode’s multiple-decade history. The Global Spirit tour covered more than 30 countries on three continents during its run. U2, which is amidst the European leg of its eXPERIENCE & iNNOCENCE Tour, cancelled their concert in Berlin after singer Bono lost his voice during the performance. A note on U2’s website from Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, Jr. and the Edge apologized for the cancellation saying, “Bono was in great form and great voice prior to the show and we were all looking forward to the second night in Berlin, but after a few songs, he suffered a complete loss of voice. We don’t know what has happened and we’re taking medical advice.” U2 did 50 shows in 2017 with some $316 million grossed worldwide. continued on page 11....

“The Orwells have disbanded,” an announcement on the official Twitter page for Chicago-based rock band The Orwells read August 29th, after it apparently succumbed to mounting outrage following members being accused of sexual abuse. Claims from numerous accusers were revealed August 26th, alleging sexual misconduct and violent/destructive behavior at shows from band members Mario Cuomo, Henry Brinner and Grant Brinner. The majority of the accusations are levied against vocalist Cuomo, and many involve alleged sexual encounters, onstage and offstage, with underage girls. The family of the late rock star Prince is suing a doctor who prescribed pain pills for him, saying the doctor failed to treat him for opiate addiction and therefore bears responsibility for his death two years ago. Prince Rogers Nelson died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl April 15th, 2016. Authorities say Dr. Michael Schulenberg admitted prescribing a different opioid to Prince in the days before he died, oxycodone, under his bodyguard’s name to protect the musician’s privacy. According to the complaint, Prince’s family seeks unspecified damages in excess of $50,000.

Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler is again demanding that President Donald Trump stop using the band’s songs at rallies. Tyler’s attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter to the president, a day after the song “Livin’ on the Edge” was heard at a Trump rally in West Virginia. It’s not the first time Tyler has asked Trump to stop using Aerosmith songs. Tyler sent the Trump campaign two cease-and-desist letters in 2015 for its use of the band’s music. Tyler tweeted it isn’t a political issue, he just does not let anyone use his songs without permission. Live Nation’s The Met Philadelphia, the new venue for live performance on North Broad Street, unveiled its initial run of shows, starting with a December 3rd opening night concert by Bob Dylan. The Met Philadelphia’s initial schedule also includes Weezer, Ween, Lindsey Sterling, Kurt Vile & The Violaters, James Bay, Amos Lee, among others. The new venue is a $56 million restoration project of the historic Philadelphia Opera House by Live Nation. the street. Right after we walked out I heard him playing one of my favorites “Candy Paint” and I was like REALLY?!? It was a cool experience to see so many people sitting outside of the fence listening to the music and still having a great time. After our short walk back to the car, I still didn’t have a voice, but Mom said my smile spoke 1,000 words! I definitely had a day I’ll never forget. I’m extremely thankful again to MSO for this amazing opportunity. I sure hope they find a place just as cool to have the Made in America Festival next year. Also thanks to my Uncle Josh for keeping the PA Musician Magazine going so I can go to cool concerts & write about them.

Maroon 5 is a frontrunner to perform during Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Georgia on Feb 3, 2019. The band is currently on tour to promote their 2017 album, “Red Pill Blues.” In 2015, singer Adam Levine, said he and his band were very interested in performing the highly coveted halftime show, stating they “very actively want to play the Super Bowl.” Maroon 5, NFL and sponsor Pepsi, have yet to comment on Zac Carper of FIDLAR the report. Famed Philadelphia nightclub the Electric Factory has been sold to AEG, with the announcement saying the iconic name and Ben Franklin face as its logo will be retired and a new name announced soon. AEG is already advertising shows including H.E.R. and Clutch. The staff remains intact except for one person pursuing other opportunities. “Keeping the staff was informally part of the deal and we thank AEG for that,” the rep said. After Meek Mill we went walking through the festival and got some food and took a break back in the media tent. I was impressed with how everything was so organized. Even though there was a ton of people there, we had no problems getting food, etc. The free water stations were very cool, and I especially liked the charging lockers. What a cool idea. A place where you could lock your phone that had charger ports to charge your phone at the same time. When you are taking so many pictures and videos your phone dies quickly, so that was cool. I couldn’t believe the festival was big enough to have a Ferris Wheel, a huge swing, and some other crazy rides. After a little break, it was time to head back to the main stage for the headliner of the day, Post Malone. He definitely had the biggest and coolest entrance of the day! It was completely black, and then BOOM! The lights went up and there he was, coming out of the smoke, signing “Go Flex”, and the crowd just went crazy and never stopped for the rest of the night! I couldn’t believe that he played for well over an hour. Mom made me start leaving before the show was completely over, but we could still hear the music even when we were walking down

OH NO! THE CHROME HEARTS: COUNTRY-ROCK WITH ATTITUDE

Both shared the same vision as the band, and knew what paths to take in order to get the songs to where they needed to be. Stephanie added, “We really learned so much…about how to be so prepared for the studio, and how to learn to be comfortable in that environment where you’re not at a gig, and you don’t have that crowd in front of you giving you that positive feedback that you’re used to. You’re in a little isolation booth, and you have to harness that feeling of being at a gig.” The finished product features nine original songs that blend

The duo worked with various guitar players early on, before deciding that they wanted to get bigger. “We realized that we wanted to take a different direction with the acoustic act, and I was really pushing Bobby at that time to form a band,” said Stephanie. “Luckily, we were friends with Brian Baum, who actually at that point had never played a bass before. We got him a bass, and we said, ‘Practice up, boy—we want to do a band’.” The group then invited Doug Fetter, one of Bob’s coworkers from his veteran’s home day job, to come play drums with them. Chad Buterbaugh soon became the group’s lead guitar player and appears on the CD, but he recently left the group to relocate to North Carolina. The Chrome Hearts presently work with two platooning lead guitar players, C’Jay Castello and Greg Larrimore. The group describes their evolving style of music as outlaw country with attitude, occupying the middle ground between country and rock’n’roll. According to Bob, “We like to blend a lot of the classical elements like the lead singer and lead guitarist dynamic – you have a dynamic person up front who can really hold the stage, and the mysterious lead guitar player. And that’s what we try to incorporate into our sound and music.” He added, “We all love rock and we all love country, and so it was just a natural step for us…and we’re all outlaws.” The Chrome Hearts recorded their 11-song “Oh No” CD at Audible Images Studio in Port Matilda, guided by Mark Ross on production and Bill Filer with mixing and mastering. Brian Baum flavors spanning Loretta Lynn-styled classic country to swampy delta blues to rockabilly to rock flourishes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. Among the original songs are the disc-opening, rockabilly-toned title track “Oh No,” the harder-edged numbers “Money” and “Jealous of You,” the folksy tongue-in-cheek ode “Drunkensville, USA” (partially inspired by the Blair County town of Duncansville), and the hearty dance-inciting “We Got It All Goin’ On.” The album also features covers of two classic country-rock hits, as the group updates Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley PTA” (this year marks the 50th anniversary of the song’s release) and Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Jo.” Physical copies of the CD can currently be purchased at The Chrome Hearts’ live shows, and the album will soon be available digitally through various online music retailers. Bob describes The Chrome Hearts’ live show as “shenanigans and mayhem.” When on stage, the group’s chief objectives are to connect with the crowd, as well as getting people dancing and having a good time. According to Bob, the group likes to showcase their original songs, as well as perform a blend of country and rock’n’roll hits that appeal to the crowd. Fun is the group’s bottom line when performing. “Everybody always says that they can tell that we’re having fun,” says Stephanie. “They know we’re playing from the heart.” Brian adds, “We’ll be out in the crowd, we’ll be dancing, we’ll be having a good time…We try to get the crowd involved as much as possible, because whenever they’re having a good time, it makes our job so much easier.” The Chrome Hearts maintain a busy live performance schedule throughout central PA, and they enjoy playing at benefits and community functions. One of their show highlights this month will be as part of the seventh annual Striking Chords Against Cancer benefit concert, which takes place on Friday, October 19 at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. Proceeds from that event will benefit the American Cancer Society. Television viewers can see The Chrome Hearts this month as they appear on the Pennsylvania Pipeline Music-TV program.

Stephanie Onkst The exact air dates will be announced soon; the program airs on WHVL-TV in State College and WYLN-TV in Hazleton. And radio listeners can hear the group on October 7 when they appear as guests on the “Homegrown Rocker” local music program on 105.9 Qwik-Rock FM in State College. The members of The Chrome Hearts have developed a close-knit chemistry as both songwriters and performers. As the core lineup of Bob, Stephanie, Brian and Doug has steadily been together, they have built family-like camaraderie and trust, as well as musical intuition and tightness. All four musicians are like-minded teammates with the same goals, who know and understand each other’s tendencies. According to Doug, “We’re not just a band, we’re a second family…You look behind your shoulder, and there they are, they got your back through thick and thin. That’s the key that makes it.” For the immediate future, The Chrome Hearts will continue to expand their fan base and geographical range, as well as introduce new fans and listeners to their original songs and the “Oh No” CD. The group continues to write new songs, and is already looking forward to recording a second album. The group ultimately hopes to make a living with their own music; as Stephanie puts it, to “grow The Chrome Hearts.” The Chrome Hearts appreciate the support they have received thus far in their journey. They express special gratitude to Doug’s wife, Lori Fetter, who serves as their photographer, promoter, and also the nanny to Bob and Stephanie’s young daughter Bobbie Mae when the group is performing. HITTING THE ROAD with THE RIDERS By Michele Rider

We started off September making a last minute decision to venture up to Williamsport for their First Friday. We ate dinner at The Brickyard Restaurant and Ale House. Franchesko Marx Band, a Williamsport based band was set to play. They are excellent musicians with an Indie, folk, rock, jam, funk kind of sound. Members consist of Brett Schneider: Percussion and Vocals, Nick Klem: Guitar, Vocals, Clay Minier: Electric Guitar, Percussion, Vocals, and Levi Stove: Bass. They formed as a 3 piece band in 2016 and later adding the 4th player in 2017. They recently released a self-titled, five-track EP that is available on Apple Music, Spotify and iTunes. It will not be long before these guys break out into the festival arena and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.

Franchesko Marx Band photos by Chris Rider While at The Brickyard, a friend insisted we go see two musicians play at Franco’s Lounge, Restaurant & Music Club. He told us that we would not regret it. So we walked over to check them out and that is where we heard this incredible duo, Stacia Abernatha and Sean Farley. He was 100% correct! Stacia has a beautiful, silky voice that I could listen to all day long! Sean has a soft rasp to his voice that is just incredible. Both play guitar extremely well and will blow you away! Stacia Abernatha is a singer/songwriter from Williamsport. She sings an eclectic array of styles & genres, with her passion in blues/Americana & world music. Stacia began performing at a very young age. She recently performed on Beale Street in Memphis, TN at The International Blues Challenge, qualifying for IBC the semi-finals! Stacia performs locally with many fellow musician friends. Stacia has shared the stage with legendary blues artists Tas Cru and The Nighthawks. For the last couple of years she attended The Silkroads Global Musician Workshop in Greencastle, IN at DePauw University’s School of Music. Stacia has had the honor of working Stacia Abernatha

with musicians and teachers like Balla Kouyate, Shane Shanahan, Aoife O’Donovan, Edward Perez, Bruce Molsky, Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck. She currently serves on The Billtown Blues Association’s Talent & Hospitality Committees and is a vocal instructor at The Uptown Music Collective. Sean Farley is a singer/songwriter, guitarist and luthier. His style could be categorized as Blues, Rock, Funk, Soul, and Americana. Sean started on keys and violin at a very young age, sang in the school choir then played drums and percussion, and finally the guitar. Sean has been playing guitar and singing in bands since the age of 15. He’s competed in the International Blues Challenge four times. Sean attended Roberto-Venn School of Lutherie in the fall of 2010 where he studied the art of hand-making stringed instruments. He is now the owner of “Guitarley’s Custom Guitar & Repair” in Williamsport. Sean spends most of his spare time on the road touring as an independent act and has mastered the art of “looping” to create the full band sound. Sean is also the guitarist, singer/songwriter in his regional band “Lynn & Farley 5”. He was also the guitar player for the “Georgia Songbird” EG Kight and recorded on her album “It’s Hot in Here” in 2008. He sang a duet with her on the album “Southern Woman and a Nawthern Man”! Sean has recorded two solo albums. His latest “LIVE & Temperamental” was recorded in front of a studio audience in Geneseo, NY. On September 8th, Get the Led Out, a Led Zeppelin Tribute Band from the Philadelphia area, played at Spyglass Ridge Winery. To be honest with you, Chris was way more excited about seeing this show than I was. It was cold and rainy and I have never been much of a fan of tribute bands, as most tribute bands don’t sound like the original band, but I kept an open mind and I am glad I did!

They played note for note the way it was recorded and really gave an amazing tribute to Zeppelin. If you ever get a chance to see them, do not hesitate! What a phenomenal show! I didn’t see that one coming. I love being surprised! We have been trying to see this next band for almost 2 months but our schedules never aligned. When we saw these guys were playing September 22nd, and we were free, we jumped at the chance. The Cadillac Cats was worth the wait. They formed in 2013 from founder Blair Mitcheltree. This is a great blues band that mix in sounds of rock, R&B and some country. Members of the band include founder Blair Mitcheltree: Guitar, Urie Kline: Drums, Scott Myers: Bass, Dave Thompson: Harmonica and Becky Wool: Vocals. Dave was performing in Memphis and not able to make this show but Shawn Strickland, Harmonica Player from The Dirty MoJo Blues Band, filled in and did an incredible job. They will be hitting the studio to record their first album that is set to be released in 2019. continued on page 15...

When talking with bass player, Phil D’Agostino, I was given the history of the group. They have been playing together

for over 15 years. They are considered the premier Led Zeppelin act and tour all over the U.S. Their mission is to bring the Zeppelin studio recordings to life in concert. When talking with guitarist, Paul Hammond, about performing and if licensing of songs ever gets in their way, he explained the band pays a licensing fee for every show they do. HITTING THE ROAD continued... Next up for Oktoberfest was the band I have never heard of before and was interested in seeing. Felix and The Hurricanes is an incredible group of seasoned players that formed in 1989 and have shared the stage with some great bands including: Blue Oyster Cult, Kentucky Headhunters, Robert Randolph, Little River band, Tab Benoit, JJ Grey and Mofro, Halestorm, Molly Hatchet, and many, many more. They play a mix of southern-styled blues/rock. Band members include founder Felix Kos: Vocals, Guitar, Jeff Clapper: Bass, Vocals and Bob Watters: Drums, Vocals. The Hurricanes have a great chemistry on stage and never use a set list, so each show is different. They base the next song off the crowd’s interest and it always keeps the show alive. They are always interested in growing and learning as a band. Quoted from Felix on their CD, ‘Travelers Not Forgotten’, “To grow is the greatest experience of any living being…If you stay put, you will die in your own tracks. You gotta move on and grow!” This three piece band has so much soul and you could tell they have a blast on stage together. Albums include ‘The Feeling’ released in 2001; ‘Travelers Not Forgotten’ released in 2003 and the third album is currently being recorded.

Royal Benson formed in 2007 and performs a mix of funk, jam and rock with a touch of jazz along. Members include Tim Myers: Bass, Vocals, Adam Tarin: Keyboard, Vocals, Matt Fern: Guitar, Vocals, James DeVoss: Percussion. They have two albums out; a 2010 release: (Long) Drive and a 2013 release: Dominoes & Gravity. They can be found on Soundcloud, iTunes and Amazon. We really enjoyed the diverse musicianship these guys have and can’t wait to see them perform again. We had two other bands to check out so we were not able to stay long to soak in all they had to offer. We will be catching another show with them in the near future, so stay tuned!

To close out a very long day of great music, we stopped by The Genetti Taphouse to see The Sue Bloom Band. This band has been around since 1983 and band members include Sue Bloom: Lead Guitar, Vocals, Dave Bloom: Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Vocals, Beth England: Fiddle, Mandolin, Rock Anello: Bass, Vocals and Bert Smeal: Drums, Percussion, Vocals. They cover a variety of music from New Country, Classic Rock and some Sue Bloom originals. She is known by fans and local media as the “Susquehanna Valley’s First Lady of Rock-N-Roll”. She has toured the east and west coast and her music has been heard nationally and internationally. She toured with the rock/ metal band Borderline in 1980. She released an album “Fairytale Lies” that included a range of rock, new country, and acoustic folk and progressive rhythms. Sue was able to hand pick the musicians for this album from all the experience and artists she has met over the years, too numerous to list. Sue can also be seen in her group, Sue Bloom Acoustic Trio, covering the genre of New Country, Folk and Rock. It was truly an honor to see her on stage.

Live music in central PA will begin to migrate back indoors with the arrival of colder fall temperatures this month. In the meantime, though, outdoor fall festivals and late season outdoor concert events continue to happen as autumn leaves start to change color. The Johnstown Area Heritage Association closed the book on their outdoor concert season last month by bringing Louisiana zydeco music back to the Flood City, presenting Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas at People’s Natural Gas Park. The night opened with Louisiana native Joe Dedon and his western PAbased swamp rock group Crawdad Joe & the Mudbugs. Playing guitar, Joe brought a big, full voice up front, flanked by Chris Volpe on keys and trumpet, Mark Randall on bass and Scott Wilson on drums. Crawdad Joe & the Mudbugs warmed up the Johnstown crowd with a mix of original songs and Louisiana/ swamp rock favorites such as “Iko Iko,” the Neville Brothers’ “Fyo on the Bayou,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Born on the Bayou,” Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya” and more. When Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas subsequently took the stage, it became clear from the get-go that Johnstown still loves its zydeco music! Namesake Nathan Williams, Sr. on vocals and accordions, his brother Dennis Paul Williams on guitar, Clarence Calais on rubboard, Junius Antoine on bass and Djuan Francis on drums quickly stirred up the dance floor with their lively zydeco party. Nathan broke the ice early and often by venturing down from the stage and into the audience with his accordion, sitting and playing alongside audience members and making the crowd part of his party. The enthusiasm and energy steadily intensified as the group performed many of their original songs, plus Louisiana favorites such as Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” Fats Domino’s “I’m Walking to New Orleans” and more. This duo from Gettysburg consists of Ash Phipps; Bass, Vocals and Jimmy (Jug Funk) Petrohilos; Guitar, slide, Vocals. The name explains the music they perform perfectly, a mix of jug band music, funk and acoustics. Their influences are Hot Tuna, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and The Band. They are a new, Americana group, with solid vocals. Great performance guys! We really enjoyed seeing them.

Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas were happy to oblige, ending the night with one more spirited instrumental Louisiana-flavored jam. Recognized as the birthplace of the banana split, Latrobe hosted the three-day Great American Banana Split Celebration in late August. Pittsburgh’s Lovebettie was part of that celebration, as they entertained during the event’s first day, Friday, in downtown Latrobe. Singer, keyboardist and Latrobe native Alexandra Naples, guitarist/singer C.T. Fields, bassist Nick Quinn and drummer Shawn King mixed Lovebettie originals with select covers, plus new material from Alexandra and C.T.’s new country-driven project Willow Hill. The group did established Lovebettie favorites including “Downpour” and “Are You Out There,” introduced Willow Hill numbers such as “More Like a Memory” and “Can’t Have My Best,” and also did numbers from Tom Petty, Stealer’s Wheel, CCR, Tracy Chapman, Elle King, Cage the Elephant and more. Alexandra’s sultry voice was in excellent form, and she and her bandmates delivered a tight, clean performance. As this day of the festival doubled as a pep rally before the kickoff of the scholastic football season and the local rivalry between Greater Latrobe and Derry Area, the cheerleading squads of both schools came to the front of the stage to sing and cheer along as Alexandra and Lovebettie did 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” before the group ended their performance with one of the new Willow Hill original tunes, “Don’t Let the Door Hit Ya.” The combination of Lovebettie’s performance and scholastic furvor made this day a good time – and yes, I did indulge in a celebratory banana split! Craft beer and live music fans converged on Altoona’s Railroaders Museum in late August for the annual Rails & Ales Brewfest, a fundraiser for Altoona Community Theatre. As visitors sampled among more than 80 different craft brews from local and regional brewers, D.D. & the Pub Crawlers and Shallow 9 provided the music (with Lauren & Joe entertaining during a V.I.P. session prior to the main event). Leading off, D.D. & the Pub Crawlers brought their brassy mixture of rock, funk, ska, soul and more. The group set the tone with their upbeat, happy vibe; singer Dana “D.D.” Martino, bassist Art Martino, new guitarist Matt Hunter, drummer Todd Harshbarger, keyboardist Tim Boland, and the four-piece horn contingent of sax players Anthony Martino and Lyndsay Reilly, trumpet player Adam Lingenfelter and trombonist Nick Martino displayed abundant energy on the railcar stage as they did numbers from Sam & Dave, Amy Winehouse, Peter Gabriel, LaBelle, Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Chicago, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and more. Shallow 9 then stepped up the dance party vibe with their performance, delivering a near-seamless mix of energized pop, funk, disco and hip-hop favorites. Guitarists Ryan Weaver and Greg Larrimore, bassist Mitch Neuder and drummer Todd Harshbarger (pulling double-duty with both bands) set the launching pad for lead singer Erika Marino and lead rapper (and soundman) Mike Stanley to stir up the party. Shallow 9 kept the crowd happy with hits from Cee-Lo Green, Michael Jackson, House Of Pain, Outkast, DNCE and more, and also strung together rousing funk and hip-hop medleys along the way. The combination of craft brews, music and non-rainy weather made for another successful Rails & Ales. (For the record, my favorite brew of the day was Robin Hood’s Blue Sky-PA.) The Railroaders Museum last month hosted a special showcase presented by Altoona’s Greenbean Coffeehouse. Greenbean regularly hosts a weekly Thursday Open Stage night, and they spotlighted the talent that regularly performs each week with the Open Stage in the Park event. A variety of Open Stage artists graced the railcar stage this day – performers I got to witness included singers and guitarists Keith Lucas, Michelle Barnes, Brother Jack and Joe Caroff; a cappella singer (and show emcee) Garrison Bailey, young dance group Simply Dance; the duos Ted & Tina (sax player Ted Ellis and singer/keyboardist Kris Tina Reiter), Cloudy Days and The Extra Miles; and young indie rock trio Wilted. In between recent cross-country tour dates, Altoona rockers Walkney capped the event with an energetic set that spotlighted a number of new original songs. Singer, guitarist and ringleader Derek Mrdjenovich, lead guitarist Rogan Allen, bassist Nate Nagle and drummer Dave Applas fired off new pop/ punk/rock numbers such as the single “Lucia Rose,” “Unhappy,” “Jealous,” “Venom” and “Don’t Stop Lovin.’” The group also broke out their own heated twist on Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” and introduced a song inspired by Derek’s recent American Idol experience, “Ready.” The inaugural Open continued on page 17...

THE PROFESSOR continued..... Stage in the Park was well-attended and a huge success, and Greenbean Coffeehouse hopes to grow it into an annual event. If you read my column regularly, you might already know it’s a no-brainer that Johnstown’s Cambria City neighborhood becomes my home away from home during Labor Day weekend, and such was again the case this year as I took in two days of the annual Cambria City Ethnic Festival. The festival was again comprised of several mini-festivals spaced out among various churches and other venues along Chestnut Street in Cambria City, with live music happening on five different stages. After arriving on Saturday, I first encountered Johnstown trio Tree during the homestretch of their performance on the ACRP “Irish Corner” stage. Singer/guitarist Matt Harnett, violinist Jen Harnett and drummer Mike Dixon played Irish folk, pub and sea shanty favorites to an appreciative crowd until an arriving thunderstorm cut their outdoor performance short. Fleeing the storm, I quickly headed up Chestnut Street to the indoor safety of Ace’s Lounge, where the Tom Katz were under way. The trio of singer, keyboardist and accordion player Tom Voytas, guitarist and singer Jack Duvall and drummer Tom Romanak sparked dancing with their variety mixture of classic rock, soul, oldies and more. Once the storm moved on, I headed back outdoors and proceeded to the Ethnic Fest Block Party stage outside BottleWorks Ethnic Arts Center, where Pittsburgh’s Chase & the Barons were entertaining. capturing back-to-back performers at the Ethnic Fest Block Party outside of BottleWorks. Singer, guitarist and band namesake Chase Barron, Mike Saunders on guitar, Jacob Rieger on bass and Jake Stretch on drums blended flavors of classic and modern rock, pop, punk and funk into an energetic set. They mixed original tunes with select covers from the Beastie Boys, Bill Withers, DNCE, Talking Heads, Herbie Hancock and more. Chase & the Barons maintained a loose mood, while delivering their set with abundant energy and a touch of wit. Local singer/ songwriter Denise Baldwin followed them with her short set of covers and interpretations. Wielding 12-string acoustic guitar,

Denise displayed a potent voice and creative arrangements on such numbers as Dream Academy/Sugarland’s “Life in a Northern Town” and her tribute to Aretha Franklin as she performed “A Natural Woman.” I next headed to the St. Mary’s stage to catch a few songs from the Johnstown Classic Rockers, before another thunderstorm moved in and ended their performance prematurely. After that storm, I returned to the ACRP stage to catch my first look at Pittsburgh-based Irish group The Wild Geese. Featuring singer/guitarist D. Finnegan, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Morrison, fiddler Megan Reilly, bassist George White and drummer/percussionist Bill Buchko; The Wild Geese performed a mix of traditional Irish folk and pub songs, along with a few original tunes. Their performance was lively, and the group mixed in abundant humor and told Irish stories along the way. I then traversed seven blocks back up Chestnut Street (I get my cardio in at this festival!) to the Ethnic Fest Block Party tent to see Pittsburgh’s Bill Toms & Hard Rain with the Soulville Horns. The former lead guitarist for Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers, Bill sings and plays guitar in Hard Rain, alongside guitarist Tom Breiding, bassist Tom Valentine, keyboardist Johnny Cool, sax man Phil Brontz and drummer Bernie Herr. Accompanying the group this night, the Soulville Horns feature Phil along with trombonist Steve Graham and trumpet player J.D. Chaison. Together, these musicians played feisty, hard-driving blues-rock as they mixed original song material from Bill’s albums, including his newest, Good for My Soul. With Bill belting the gritty lead voice, the group frequently rode the songs to intense peaks that kept the crowd yelling for more. I finished the night at Ace’s, where Octane slammed the lid on the evening with their set of high-octane hard rock. Singer Mike Prebehalla, guitarist James Forish, bassist Dave Bambino and drummer Chris Jimerson kept fans rocking with tunes from Journey, Metallica, Three Days Grace, Bon Jovi, Papa Roach and more. Weather conditions were greatly improved for Ethnic Fest’s final day, Sunday. I arrived while the Irish Pretenders performed at ACRP. The group celebrated Irish folk, pub and war songs, with singer/guitarist John Skelley sharing stories and histo-

ries about the songs. Some of the numbers performed while I was there included “The Wild Colonial Boy,” “Brennan on the Moor,” “Kelly the Boy from Killane,” “Big Strong Man” and more. While headed up Chestnut Street afterward, I stopped by a tent outside the Hungarian Reformed Church to enjoy some food; a lone accordionist (whose name I did not catch) serenaded diners and passers-by with folk instrumentals. This is one of the special things I like about Cambria City Ethnic Festival, the possibility of local Cambria City residents sharing their musical and other creative talents on porches, street corners and under tents like here. I soon arrived at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where Rewynd was wrapping up their performance. Featuring singer/guitarist Pat Mollohon, bassist/singer Bob Palmer and drummer John Kot, Rewynd performed classic and southern rock favorites. My next stop was the Ethnic Fest Block Party tent, where Pittsburgh’s Charlie Barath Duo was performing. Namesake Charlie sang and played harmonia, with “Memphis Mike” Metzger playing guitar and singing. These two celebrated the blues, performing a mixture of original songs and traditional blues numbers from such names as Blind Willie McTell, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon and more. THE PROFESSOR continued..... the International Blues Challenge in Memphis earlier this year, Charlie showed his mastery on blues harmonica and shared stories about his music and early blues artists. I closed out my Ethnic Festival experience by checking out That Oldies Band at St. Mary’s pavilion. Featuring a cast of Johnstown music scene veterans dating back to the 1960s, That Oldies Band celebrated vintage rock’n’roll hits from the 1950s and 1960s. I spent part of Labor Day as both audience member and performer during the annual Ox Roast Festival hosted by the Blair County Game, Fish & Forestry Association near Altoona. I was first an audience member, catching part of the performance by Altoona-based duo ReWired. “Cousin Mike” Wieland on lead vocals and guitar and Rick Guyer on drums performed acoustic rock and pop favorites from the catalogs of CCR, Old Crow Medicine Show, John Denver, Jimmy Buffett, The Who and more. Mike showed a steady and sturdy singing voice while Rick provided the firm drumbeats behind him. Afterward, I became a performer with my Backyard Rockers bandmates Rich Dasch and Mo Yon, having fun with our own takes on tunes from Neil Young, Steve Earle, The Band, Elton John, Greg Kihn Band, Green Day, Bob Dylan and more. Besides music, this festival served up ox roast sandwiches and other tasty menu items, vendors, children’s activities, and shooting ranges for gun enthusiasts. The heavy rains that caused widespread flooding across the state early last month also impacted the sixth annual Route 22 Rock & Blues Festival at Lincoln Caverns Campground near Huntingdon. The forecast for heavy rains and thunderstorms prompted cancellation of the Friday night leg of the festival, but Saturday’s leg proceeded as scheduled. My own band, the Backyard Rockers, was part of the day’s slate, and I caught performers before and after our performance. Upon arriving, I caught bits and pieces of Slow Music for Slow Minds, the brainchild of Hollidaysburg’s Jason Weyandt. Jason generated a mostly electronica flavor, performing original compositions on synthesizer and vocoder, as well as a few unplugged numbers on ukulele. Performing between scheduled acts was Sharky, the unique aquatic alter ego of area musician Tom Brunner. Decked

in a shark outfit and armed with megaphone, the finned performer entertained and – in a few cases – bewildered festival-goers with a crazed cabaret that mixed avant-garde original tunes with twisted takes on popular songs; all sung, shouted and growled with a comedic edge. Sharky used backing rhythm and electronica tracks, while playing guitars (including a shark-shaped axe), sirens, samples and other objects at his disposal. Following my own band’s performance, I watched Rich Edmundson as he presented his free-form acoustic performance, generating song material and words on the spot and indulging in some extended acoustic jam interludes. Dylan Miller then performed a set of original numbers and early blues classics. Armed with acoustic guitar, Dylan did songs off his recently-issued Carrion EP such as “I’ll Go” and “Your Smile,” and performed newer original songs such as “Wrong Side of the Tracks,” “Born Alone Die Alone” and “Wallflower.” Dylan also did early blues numbers from Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt and others. As rain arrived and began to intensify, On The Brink took the stage to showcase their original song arsenal, including numbers from their just-issued self-titled debut CD. This group has expanded to a quintet since their debut performance at last year’s festival; joining singer/guitarist Ed Brinkel, bassist/singer Dana Brinkel and drummer Nate Woods are cellist Kirsten Leigh and violinist Lisa Wolf. The Blacksnakes followed with their set of scorching electric blues, as many festival-goers huddled under tents to escape the rain. The Blacksnakes presented a dual guitar threat this day, with young axeslinger Ty Fowler joining lead guitarist Jason Feathers, setting the stage for frequent dual guitar solo displays, harmony leads and more. The two guitarists, singer Brian Elliott, bassist Hunter Karns and drummer Nate Woods mixed blues classics with original blues numbers such as “Bottom Shelf Woman,” “Walking Dead Blues” and more. As darkness arrived, The Crooked Line took the stage to perform their blend of folk and bluegrass-flavored original music. The trio of singer/guitarist Chris Strait, banjo player Bob Baronner and Justin Dorsey on upright bass demonstrated strong vocals and harmonies as they did songs from their first CD and forthcoming follow-up, plus select covers that included Jimi Hendrix’s “Redhouse” and Johnny Cash’s “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town.” And I saw most of Mama Corn’s set as rains grew

heavier; the soggy conditions didn’t dampen the spirits of singer/guitarist Bruce Forr, banjo player/singer Jeremy Nelson, singer/dobro player Johnny Stevens and upright bass player Bryan Homan, who delivered their bluegrass-flavored original songs and grassed-up takes on popular songs with their trademark wit and humor. I finally fled the rains and mud before the day’s final group, The Perkolators, took the stage. Hats off to the hardy music fans who came, camped and stuck around during the rain deluge, and kudos to show organizer Mike Houck for pulling off this year’s festival in spite of the dismal weather forecast. Bacon connoisseurs and live music fans descended upon Johnstown’s Richland Township Volunteer Fire Company last month for their annual Fall’n BaconFest. The two-day event spotlighted bacon and pork cuisine, and featured live music both nights. I caught part of Itch’s performance on Saturday evening. Singer/ harmonica player Greg Cveykus, lead guitarist James Forish, bassist Colin McCally and drummer Doug Lohr entertained this “baconalia” with a mix of rock and country favorites. During their first set, Itch triggered dancing with numbers from Neil Young, Aerosmith, Big & Rich, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Earle, Johnny Cash, Poison and more. One of their highlights was their merger of Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” with The Who’s classic “My Generation.” Indoors, two area bands marked CD releases with special shows; including this month’s cover feature group The Chrome Hearts, who celebrated the release of their debut CD Oh No in late August at Altoona’s Catholic War Vets club. Singer Stephanie Onkst, singer/guitarist Bob Onkst, Greg Larrimore on lead guitar, Brian Baum on bass and Doug Fetter on drums spotlighted tunes from the CD with a few country and rock’n’roll favorites thrown in. Stephanie and Bob shared insight and stories about the songs and their inspirations; “Kickin’ Up Dust” was inspired by Loretta Lynn, while an odd encounter at a gig brought about “Lookin’ at My Boots.” The group did other CD tracks such as “Drunkensville, USA,” “Money,” “Black Sheep” and their ‘psychobilly’ title song “Oh No.” The Chrome Hearts also covered favorites from Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Anders Osborne, Eric Church, the Eagles, Gretchen Wilson, and the night-ending edition of the Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues.” The Chrome Hearts kept it fun throughout the evening, and even presented a food spread for revelers to enjoy. Altoona’s Post Season returned to the live stage last month after more than a year away, celebrating the release of their brand new self-titled CD during an all-ages event at Altoona’s SK8-14 Action Park. Sistercell and August Winters opened up the evening, before Young Lungs took the stage. Singer Meg Wills, guitarists Myles Mahoney and Scott Ciambotti, bassist Tyler Miller and drummer Jordan Bosland fired off new original power pop/ punk-driven numbers, plus select covers from Maroon 5, Blink 182 and more. Post Season – singer Dan Tippery, guitarists Bryan Thanh and Canyon Gargon, bassist Chuck Bernard and drummer Conor McNamara – then came out firing on all cylinders, eager to introduce their new songs. The group provided feverish, nonstop energy as they delivered pop/punk-flavored tunes off the new CD such as “Numb to This,” “Another Day,” continued on page 19...

THE PROFESSOR continued..... “Never Tell Me the Odds” and more. Dan frequently thanked the fans for their support, and launched himself into the crowd to do some surfing during Post Season’s last song. I took in the third set of Johnstown’s Stone Bridge last month as they rocked at the Windber Hotel. Stone Bridge is comprised of three alumni of former Johnstown heavy rockers Rennis – singer/guitarist Craig Stiles, bassist/singer Steve Stull and drummer Darren Byer. They fired up the heavy rock and metal of the 80s, 90s and 2000s – doing numbers from Tool, System Of A Down, Linkin Park, Danzig, Monster Magnet, Type O Negative, Rage Against the Machine, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden and more. They pulled out some tunes you don’t often hear bands cover, such as Monster Magnet’s “Powertrip,” Iron Maiden’s “22 Acacia Avenue,” Motley Crue’s “Live Wire,” and Craig delivered a convincing Peter Steele vocal on Type O Negative’s “Black No. 1.” Though not packed, the folks in attendance this night appreciated Stone Bridge’s metal, and several folks danced and grooved. And I caught two shows last month at McGarvey’s…One was a triple-bill featuring Off The Top Rope, Silver Screen and Reign Of Z. I missed Off The Top Rope, but saw Johnstown’s Silver Screen, who came on strong with their set of powerhouse original songs and select rocking covers. Singer/guitarist Stephen Platt, lead guitarist Ben Ressler, bassist Alex Richardson and drummer Austin Danel brought forth grunge-rooted original tunes from their Inertia EP such as “Labelled Off,” “Make Believe” and “Bar Swing,” as well as a few new songs that will be on their next album. They also tapped into the Nirvana catalog for “Come As You Are,” and also did numbers from Jimi Hendrix and Rage Against the Machine. Five members strong, Pittsburgh’s Reign Of Z finished the night, launching a wall of sound that blended elements of classic and symphonic metal, power metal and metalcore. Singer Zosia West ran the gamut from soaring and siren-like singing to aggressive snarls and monstrous growls – flanked by guitarists Steven Lords and Zach Cunningham, bassist Stephen Berg and drummer Nick Kramer. Reign Of Z did an all-original set; among their songs was the group’s new single “Dysmorphia.”

I also saw Pittsburgh punk rock force The Cheats last month as they headlined the Turbojugend Rail City Party at McGarvey’s, which also featured earlier performances from Dragline, Thunder Vest, The Snipped and Owned By A**holes. The seasoned cast of frontman Todd (Porter) Cheat, Philthy Phil on bass, Devin Holiday on guitar and Kyle Cheat on drums drilled high-octane, punk-fueled heavy rock to the gathered throngs, delivered with velocity and reckless abandon. News and notes…The “Undisputed King of Pittsburgh Rock’n’Roll,” Norman Nardini, was honored with his own day last month, as Pittsburgh mayor William Paduto declared September 8 as Norman Nardini Day in recognition of Norman’s 50 years of making music and serving as musical ambassador of the Steel City…Erie’s famed rock room, Sherlock’s and Park Place, closed its doors in mid-August after more than three de-

THE CHROME HEARTS – OH NO (no label) Formed four years ago, The Chrome Hearts have steadily built a fan base throughout central PA with their blend of country, rock’n’roll and blues. Their first CD, Oh No, shows what this group is all about, as they introduce their hearty, edgy sound. At the front and center of that sound is lead singer Stephanie Onkst, who mixes a soaring voice with a dynamic, sassy singing style. Bob Onkst also sings and plays rhythm guitar, along with (now former member) Chad Buterbaugh on lead guitar, Brian Baum II on bass and Doug Fetter on drums. The Chrome Hearts give the disc a rowdy, psychobilly-flavored start with the title track opener “Oh No,” setting the tone for the Stephanie’s boisterous approach. Stephanie issues a musical ultimatum on the Stones-like rocker “Money,” stands her ground on the defiant “Lookin’ at My Boots,” and addresses the envious on the Hendrix-toned “Jealous of You.” The Chrome Hearts offer a delta blues flavor on “Not the Same Girl,” and tap straightforward country flavors on “Black Sheep” and “Kickin’ Up Dust.” Bob demonstrates his smooth croon on the tongue-in-cheek country-folk ode “Drunkensville, U.S.A.” (partly inspired by the Blair County town of Duncansville) and the howlin’ honky-tonk of “We Got It All Goin’ On.” And The Chrome Hearts update two classic country-rock hits, lending their own flavor to Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Jo” and the disc-ending rendition of Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley P.T.A.” The performances are robust and enthusiastic; Stephanie belts out her voice with reckless abandon and ample spunk, and Chad’s bluesy guitar licks are gritty and greasy. Bob, Brian and Doug provide steady rhythms to anchor it all. Produced by Mark Ross, and mixed and mastered by Bill Filer at Audible Images Studio in Port Matilda, Oh No sounds raw, full and punchy, and brings out the Chrome Hearts’ edge and attitude. Singer/guitarist Jon Spearly, singer/bassist Mark Holland and drummer Damien Page pick up where they left off from last year’s self-titled debut, stretching their fast-firing brand of alternative and progressive rock into new terrain. Although the group’s melodies are busy and complex and

their arrangements unpredictable, Phobos Anomaly successfully crafts identifiable song hooks, and executes them with tight instrumental performances and frequent vocal harmonies. This is a colorful album, as each song comes at the listener with a different angle, flavor or dynamic, keeping this set intriguing from start to finish. The album surfs into action with the driving “Guns + Sex,” riding a surf-rock wave that delves into spacerock terrain midway through. They paint a darker texture on the cavernous “Slave to the Grind,” deliver a hard country-flavored footstomper with the sassy breakup number “Catfood Spoon,” and integrate a Latin-styled rhythm into “Dragon Bones.” Perhaps the catchiest and most irresistible track here is the group’s boisterous ode to ill-fated “Sisyphus,” the Greek mythology figure doomed to rolling a stone for eternity. Phobos Anomaly shows their knack for interesting, complex song structures on several numbers, including “The Wings,” “Zerolove,” and the disc-closing update of “Reassembly,” a song dating back to the group’s beginnings a decade ago. And they combine progressive elements into harder rock and metal arrangements on the captivating “The Fun Is On You,” “Earth Is Freezing on Planet Hell,” the galloping “Tropic of Orbit” and the speed rocker “Phrygian Age.” The performances are agitated yet precise, and it’s clear that these three musicians know and understand their turf well. Written, produced and recorded by the group in State College, Good Luck of a Giant sounds urgent and vibrant, with the group unafraid to experiment with tonality, distortion and reverb to keep the sonic angles varied and interesting. Phobos Anomaly expands their adventurism and scope with Good Luck of a Giant, as they boldly push the parameters of their distinctive style and sound. RODEO SERENADE – AMERICAN ROOTS (no label) Formed early last year, State College’s Rodeo Serenade celebrates 1950’s-era roots sounds on their first CD, American Roots. Lead singer Kristi Branstetter, singer/rhythm guitarist Susan Burlingame, lead guitarist Steve Branstetter, bassist Phil Burlingame and drummer Kyle Haust celebrate and recreate the “era when Hank, Patsy, Lefty, and Elvis ruled the honky tonks, vinyl records and AM radio airwaves” over American Roots’ seven tracks. Rockabilly, honky-tonk and Texas swing music serve as the primary ingredients of Rodeo

Serenade’s musical scope. Several songs come – at least partly – from the Patsy Cline catalog. Kristi – whose past resume includes portraying the famous singer in Always…Patsy Cline – applies her bright singing style to Cline hits such as 1959’s “Gotta Lotta Rhythm” and 1962’s “She’s Got You,” as well as Cline’s posthumous 1968 single “Anytime,” which opens the disc. Kristi and Rodeo Serenade also take on Texas swing with their version of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys’ “San Antonio Rose” and Pee Wee King/Redd Stewart’s “Tennessee Waltz” – both also sung by Patsy Cline. Providing another highlight is the group’s rollicking merger of Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky” with the Elvis-popularized “That’s Alright.” And for a bonus track, Rodeo Serenade gives their rootsy treatment to Bobby Helms’ 1957 holiday season hit “Jingle Bell Rock.” Rodeo Serenade sounds quite at home with their vintage roots specialty, and listeners will quickly sense the group’s enthusiasm for this era throughout the CD. The performances are bright and punchy, and the production and mix gives these songs an authentic feel, often capped with classic 1950s-era reverb. Fans of vintage rock’n’roll, honky tonk and Sun Records rockabilly should savor Rodeo Serenade’s American Roots, a pleasant listen sure to get toes tapping. THE LAMPSHADES – ASTROLOGY (Mint 400 Records) Native Blair Countians now based in Pittsburgh, The Lampshades have forged their own unique and distinctive musical niche over the course of five albums. Their fifth album, Astrology, pulls all the stops as the trio – singer/guitarist Jaren Love, bassist Chris Kibler and drummer Dane Adelman – blend and intensify the

various flavors they have established over their earlier recordings. The group’s base sound continues to mix the geek pop/ rock tendencies of Weezer with the eccentric adventurism of the Flaming Lips and the grunge/punk dirtiness of Nirvana. On Astrology, the Lampshades filter that base sound through production tricks and techniques similar to those used by George Martin, Brian Wilson and Phil Spector. The result is a brash, low-fi presentation channeled through a wide assortment of mixes, distortion, feedback, and a cavalcade of instruments including strings, saxophones, an accordion and even a power drill contributed by various guests. But chaotic and crazy as it looks on paper (or a computer screen), this works; the melodies sound quirky yet catchy, with Jaren’s wistful voice selling the album’s loose theme of coming to terms with failed adolescent love. The opening number, “Hope on a Rope,” sets the tone as Jaren pines over lost teenage love; the song slowly drifts into a layered, dreamy cacophony of strings, synths, horns and cavernous drum thunder. Jaren concedes his self-pity on the fuzz-guitar rocker “I Always Felt Bad for Myself,” leading to the title track sequence “Astrology,” a four-part reminiscence that culminates in an accordion dirge about rejection. Jaren ponders the meaning of it all on “Civilization and Its Discontents” and “Stories and Idiosyncrasies,” suggests appreciating love while it lasts on the acoustic “Always On,” and yearns for closure and contentment

on the disc-closer “Feel Okay,” which ends in a deluge of Beatle-esque psychedelia. The Lampshades balance grandiose songs and arrangements with punk-like reckless abandon, and this sonic dichotomy keeps Astrology interesting from start to end. Make no mistake about it, haphazard as this sounds at times, The Lampshades know exactly what they are doing, from Jaren’s detuned guitar riffs, to the unexpected instrumental flourishes and backdrops, to the varied mixes given to Dane’s drumbeats. It is all brought forth with a jagged yet broad-sounding mix that captures instrumental nuances and acid burn. Simply put, Astrology is something totally different, a compelling listen and easily the Lampshades’ most ambitious hour yet. NEGAN – BURNT PAGES EP (no label) Former Hi-Tyde drummer Mike Davis assembled northern Cambria County heavy rockers Negan last year. Inspired by the Walking Dead character of the same name, Negan – Mike on lead vocals, the Driving Sideways alumni contingent of guitarist Bob Gray, bassist Josh Yahner and drummer Damien Falatek, plus former Dim guitarist Jeremy Ashurst – introduce a stern, heavy rock/ metal sound on their four-song debut offering Burnt Pages. Negan’s sound is inspired by classic 1980s metal from Judas Priest, as well as 1990s hard rock influences such as Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Tool. All four songs take on darker themes; inspired by a Twilight Zone episode ,

the disc-opener “Obsolete” launches with a trial verdict opening as it imagines a dystopian future where the written word and religion are rendered obsolete by technology, punctuated with gang-chant choruses of “Burn down the library/Burn down the church.” The hard-driving “Where Do We Go From Here” explores outspoken viewpoints and their consequences, while the aggressive assault “The Devil’s Coming” looks at the evil results of greed, addiction and more. And for the finale, the groove-based “We” surmises that ‘we’ all face a finality, no matter our background or stature in life. The songs are all infectious and engaging, and Negan delivers them with ample power and purpose. Mike’s vocals show a variety of angles, from stern and direct to high-soaring, to anger and aggression. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Rik Golden at Golden Records, this EP sounds clear and thunderous, letting Negan’s firepower render its full brunt. Burnt Pages introduces listeners to Negan’s fullforce brand of classic-rooted heavy rock, and this debut salvo should whet appetites for more of what this band has to offer (such as their full-length
