By Josh Noll Welcome to another edition of the Pa Musician Magazine. Its hard to say but this is the September issue and that means summer is coming to a close. The Kids are back in school, the nights are getting cooler, and the days will soon become short cold reminders of what summer once was. While painful to think about all the cold and snowy weather will soon be here. But in the meantime we get one of my favorite seasons, FALL! Mainly trail season and it’s sad to say but with starting the paper I have not been on my BMX bike all summer, so this next month I will be making some time to hit the trails and hang with my homies in the woods. Yes at 42, I still ride little kids bicycles and play in the dirt, it keeps me young. So I encourage all the readers out there to stop thinking about it and start doing it. We only have a limited amount of time left before the freeze so get out there and enjoy the great fall weather. There are some Great Fall Festivals this month including THE NORTH APPALACHIAN FOLK FESTIVAL on Sept. 7-8th and ROOSTERPALOOZA on Sept. 29th. Both are sure to be a good time so check out the ads in this months issue and make your plans to get out there and enjoy all the hard work these musicians and music lovers have done for you. Last month was a busy one for me but I did manage to make it out and catch some live music. I took a trip up to THE SELINSGROVE FARMERS MARKET to catch a mid morning set of PRAIRIE DOGMA. The guys are great musicians and by the 2nd song they had the crowds attention and some of the smaller ones were up learning about live music. It was great to see the interaction with the band. They did a great song about the Susquehanna River and it was nice to walk around and get some local made beef jerky and a shoefly pie my fav all while listening to the guys perform. After that I headed over to the DRUNKEN PUPPET SHOW!! This is a private party that Johnny Suicide and his lovely wife Teri host 10yrs strong at this point. They don’t mess around and put up a full stage with rain coverage to ensure the show doesn’t stop. They had an awesome line up EMILY ROWE, SUMNER PARK, RENAISSANCE KINGS, AWESOMELY STRONG, AGES TO BURN , AND THE SUICIDE PUPPETS. All the bands did a great job with a special mention to BRAD FOREMAN personally, I’ve have always been a drummer at heart even though I always got stuck playing guitar. When Brad started banging the skins he got everyone’s attention. He puts it all out there and it showed watching him perform with AGES TO BURN. If you get a chance, check out

AGES TO BURN all these bands on facebook and out in the wild. In other PA Musician news you will notice a new column has been added as we welcome Chris and Michele rider to our team of staffers. Chris takes the photos and Michele is doing the writing. I have known Chris most my life as I went to school with him and his brother Ben. We were talking at a couple shows and then after meeting Michele and seeing her enthusiasm towards the music and meeting the musicians it just seemed like a good fit. If you know me I am sort of a fly by the seat of my pants guy and when something feels right I don’t second guess I just say yes lets do that. Its how I ended up taking over the paper I never have a plan in life I just do what life wants me to do. Just so everyone is clear they are volunteers, as are all of our writers and contributors so they will be taking time out of the busy schedule of life to get out there and cover some shows and take some great pics for us all to see. The plan is to add more coverage in the Williamsport, Lewisburg, Sunbury, and surrounding areas. You may never know where they will end up as the Riders are out hitting the road to see local live music. So please go read

THE UNION HOUSE over in Richland is another spot to hit up they have an IRISH SESSION on Sept. 15th from 5-8 and then after that you can catch STREAMLINE from 10-1 check them out and see what its all about. CLUB XL is taking it old school this month with THE METRON REUNION on the14th and a HYBRID ICE show on the 15th. There has been some talk of WHITEY THE MIGHTY making it down to see his old buds at the METRON REUNION we will just have to see how he feels . Later in the month they will have local favorites EMILY’S TOYBOX. CLUB XL has a full month of shows check out the schedule on the back page. BOOBY TRAP will be at the DOUBLE K on the 8th and they have STEEL on the 22nd. DOUBLE K has live music every Saturday! OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
AHHH!! It’s my birthday month!! The BIG 4-0!!! It’s truly hard to believe I’m in the final days of my 30s. It’s also even harder to believe I’ve been writing articles for over a DECADE of my life!! So many bands, so many friends, so much fun!! Cheers to the next decade! Ready or not, here I come! My son, Zack is also turning 16 this month, and my puppy Rosie is turning 1! We are going to have a very busy family birthday month, and if I needed any extra excuses to have a mid-life crisis, I think Zack learning how to drive will be the straw that breaks my sanity! Ha! Anyway.. on to the music. Last month I was driving up to one of my many trips to Mifflinburg to help my mother-in-law and I happened to see one heck of a party happening, so of course I googled it, and it turns out it was Gilson’s 3rd Annual Summer Snow Day Party. Gilson’s make custom snowboards, so why not bring in some snow on a hot July day! They had a ramp where they piled on snow and there plenty of snowboarders dusting off their boards and doing some tricks. They also had FREE beer from Troegs and some other amazing local breweries and Bulliet bourbon, and of course live music! When I arrived the Martini Bros. were just taking the stage. I haven’t seen these guys in forever, so of course it was my first time seeing them without Mike, which is of course old news to most of you, at first it was a little odd, but the new guy, Brian Cartwright plays one heck of a bass and it’s awesome how he fits right in. Mike was a blast watching on stage with all of his crazy moves, which is missed, but hopefully after a few more shows they’ll get back to their regular crazy stage antics. The Martini Bros. are definitely a one of kind band with amazing originals that quickly had everyone dancing and bopping to the music, and most importantly having a great time. The 75th Annual Marysville Carnival was taking place in the beginning of August and one night I stopped in to see Saddle Horn. These Perry County boys always make me miss home, but they do a great job singing all of the crowd favorites, keeping everyone dancing and having a good time. Their lead singer Steve Clouser has one heck of a range and can sing a wide variety of songs. And just in case he can’t mix things up enough, a regular guest to their show, Valerie Eaton from 40 Degrees North, took the stage and belted out a couple songs. It
Deuce Gibb/The Martini Bros. was super sweet when she sang “Sweet Child O’ Mine” with baby Jemma in her belly and Jemma’s Daddy was playing the drums too! Saddle Horn is out there heating things up at venues throughout central PA and beyond. You can check out their ad in this issue to find out where they will be playing next, or you can also get their info and get them booked at your venue or private party. You can also check out Steve in his Acoustic project Unplugged where his son plays the guitar while he sings. They are a new advertiser and hopefully I will get out there to see and hear them soon! Thanks for advertising!! My next night out was a wild, head banging, good time because Steel was playing again at Double K. I was so happy that I had a free night and could hang out and have a good time. Now that Double K only has bands on Saturdays it’s so hard for me to get there because I am rarely home on a Saturday night. I’m really hoping my life calms down and I can get out there more to see all of the great entertainment that Karen and Jim have on the schedule at Double K. All of the Steel family was out in full force to support the band and have a good time. We definitely had the hair flying and the dance floor packed! Mark from Ebenezer Screw also stopped by to say Hi and Chris had him come up a sing a song. You often see the guys from Steel out supporting other bands, and in turn, you usually see a stray musician or two hanging out and having a good time at Steel shows too. That’s what we need so much more of, bands supporting bands, building relationships and helping each other out. If you are ever feeling lonely, just check out Steel’s schedule and get out to one of their shows and join in the fun! Music is limited on a Friday night so I decided to go to the Park Inn Deck Stage (Blarney’s) for Chapel Hill. I’ve heard a lot about these guys, and I’m glad I finally got the chance to check them out. Chapel Hill’s lead singer, Roy Barrett, has a
lot of experience playing with many different bands throughout the years, and he’s very comfortable on stage. He has a great stage presence and can definitely sing a wide range of songs. He’s also not afraid to jump down into the crowd and dance with the ladies! To add to the excitement of the night they had a brand new husband and wife, and their wedding party and guests come in and join in the party! That is definitely a bonus to play adjacent to a hotel that hosts weddings! Chapel Hill plays all of your country favorites and beyond, so grab your boots and your cowboy hat and get out there and boot scoot and boogie!! On a very special Thursday night I headed in to Club XL for Skerryvore, a Scottish Celtic Rock Group. I’m always looking for interesting things to do during the week and when I clicked on Club XL’s advertisement on Facebook I was intrigued. They remind me of Drop Kick Murphys, but they don’t play quite as hard, but they are a huge band with bagpipes, recorders, violins, guitars, drums, etc. Technically with too many instruments to list! The bagpipe and violin duel was pretty amazing, but really it was all amazing. It was sad to not see a HUGE crowd there supporting this crazy good band, but I think people are still trying to get used to the fact that we have such an awesome venue in our area. Club XL is now advertising with us, so do yourselves a favor and keep an eye on their schedule for the bands they have flowing through our city. Since we are on such a thoroughfare, Harrisburg is a great place for touring musicians to stop by on their night off. In September they are having a Metron Reunion with the Luv Gods and DJ Ray Rossi that I’m sure will be a blast. They also have special events such as Emily’s Toybox on stage September 29th for the PSU vs OSU White Out Blowout! I’m telling you, they have a lot going on. They also do specials for free or discounted tickets,

so check out their ad and plan your next night out on the town! The following weekend my friends and I had a wonderful girls’ weekend at the Gettysburg KOA. It was so relaxing and while we were floating around in the pool I heard some music we decided to go check out. It was Tom Jolin from just down the road in Gettysburg playing banjo, accordion, guitar, and even a homemade hammered dulcimer! He was a perfect campground musician. He made his dulcimer in the 70’s and it still plays like a dream! The last night out this month was another Thursday night show at the Park Inn for Nash 93.5’s NashNext 2018 Competition. After some online voting they had the top 5 musicians in the area competing for a chance to play in Nashville and if they win that competition, they could wind up with a record deal! The winner of this local competition gets their song played for 6 weeks on Nash FM 93.5, so that’s already a great reward! The performers were Connor Manley, who also had a well known face we know playing with him, Jake Puliti. Then Callie Tomblin who had Bobby Gentillo on stage with her, Jason Raymond, Garret Shultz, who had the boys from Stonewood playing with him, and last but not least the big winner Devon Nickoles. Devon is just a young farm girl from Westminster, MD that just wants to get her music heard, and she’s definitely doing that. Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! The past month began with the return of glam-metal band Faster Pussycat. Singer Taime Downe continues to lead the Los Angeles based band touring with them yearly. Thank-you to the venue, Reverb, in Reading PA for putting on a really great show and having really great employees. Faster Pussycat are the real deal and knocked out their hits, “House of Pain,” “You’re So Vain” and “Slip of the Tongue.” The band just completed a tour of the States with 42 shows in 53 days. Scranton natives, The Menzingers also come back for three quick dates including Lancaster, Uncasville CT and Bethlehem on August 18th. The indie-punk band recently sold-out their show in Harrisburg back in May. The Menzingers are currently taking a break before headlining a Fall tour of 22 shows across America. They put on a fantastic infectious concert and continue to build their following with each performance. Their fall tour will include Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Brooklyn and Philadelphia’s Union Transfer on November 24th. Harrisburg’s newest venue Club XL held a really fun night on August 25th with a free show featuring Depeche Mode tribute band Strange Love. The band really did an amazing job replicating an actual Depeche Mode experience. Based out of Pasadena, CA their current US tour brings them to many bigger venues like the House of Blues and Fillmore, and also includes dates in Mexico. Local DJ legend Ray Rossi started the night and was followed by a new local band The Super High-Tech Jet Fighters - both openers did a great job. Many thanks to Club XL and their really good staff. Lastly, the incredible Future Islands began their latest tour at Lancaster’s Chameleon on August 26th. I believe this was primarily a warm-up show because Chameleon is much smaller than the 3,000 capacity venues they are touring. The band thanked the venue for always supporting them in their early days and their performance was unbelievable, leaving the soldout crowd drenched and amazed. Future Islands will perform 29 shows in the next 34 days across Northern America, with a final show at Washington DC’s Anthem on September 27th. NATIONAL NEWS: Eagles’ album ‘Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)’ has retaken the spot of best-selling album of all time in the United States, passing Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, the 1976 compilation has been certified 38x platinum. ‘Thriller’ has been bumped to second at 33x platinum, while another Eagles album - 1977’s ‘Hotel California’ - is the third-best selling album at 29x platinum. Vans Warped Tour held its last outing this summer and reported one of the biggest annual grosses in the tour’s history. Kevin Lyman and Co. in 2018 reported a $21.3 million gross, hitting 38 cities for a total of 540,688 tickets. The averages were impressive, with 14,229 tickets per show, and an average gross of $560,857. The average ticket price was $39, tied for its highest ever. The festival was hugely popular with pop-punk bands featuring a full day of music, skateboarding, and good vibes. From 1997-2018 Warped Tour grossed $367.2 million, and sold an estimated 10.6 million tickets. American music legend, Aretha Franklin passed away at the age of 76, on August 16th at her home in Detroit from pancreatic cancer. Her passing follows a long illness that caused her to cancel concert appearances earlier this year and led to a 2017 announcement that she would cease touring. Her final concert was on July 29th, 2017 at Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va, with a sellout crowd of 6,970 in attendance. Franklin was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock ’N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. She was also a Kennedy Center honoree in 1994 and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005, named by President George W. Bush. She won 18 Grammy Awards. ‘The Queen of Soul’ was entombed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit. Aerosmith will bring the “Deuces Are Wild” residency to the Park Theatre at Park MGM resort in Las Vegas, with 18 dates so far from April to July. The residency kicks off April 6th at the 5,200-seat Park Theatre, where the show will feature never-seen-before visuals and audio from Aerosmith recording sessions. Park MGM is the latest addition to the Las Vegas Strip, and will also host Lady Gaga’s Vegas 27-date residency that continued on page 11....

Gaga will perform two different shows, the “Lady Gaga Enigma” show, which is described as an odyssey of her pop hits and also “Lady Gaga Jazz & Piano,” which will be classics from the Great American Songbook and stripped-down versions of her hits. The Rolling Stones recently completed a second European “No Filter” tour leg with 14 sold-out stadiums during the May-July dates, ringing up nearly $116.6 million grossed and averaging 57,763 tickets sold per show. It’s not known whether Mick and the boys will return to the States, when questioned, promoter John Meglen answered, “They never said that was the end!” With a new album on the way, Elvis Costello & The Imposters are hitting North America in November and December, focusing mostly on theatres. The dates kick off November 2nd at Sands Bethlehem Event Center in Bethlehem, PA, and run just over a month. The group’s upcoming album “Look Now” is due out October 12th. Costello recently had to cancel much of his European summer tour after undergoing surgery for a “small but very aggressive” cancerous tumor, but apparently he will be well enough to tour again by November. Singer Demi Lovato was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital “after suffering what appears to be a heroin overdose.” The 25-year-old was transported from her home and is undergoing treatment. Lovato has publicly fought substance abuse for years, and recently said she was six years sober, although in a new song called “Sober” she seemed to apologize for failing to stay clean. Lovato’s representative stated, “Demi is awake and with

her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support. HITTING THE ROAD with THE RIDERS By Michele Rider
First and foremost, thank you for reading this! We are the new addition to Pennsylvania Musician Magazine’s staff and we are very excited to be here. We live in a little town called Liverpool, just north of Harrisburg. Chris grew up in Liverpool and I am originally from Williamsport. Chris and I have always loved live music and we have been to some great concerts and shows around PA. Even though Chris has been doing music photography for many years, I would have to say that his love for music photography started in 2011 when we decided to step outside the box, and Pennsylvania, and attend a weekend-long trip to our first big music festival

in up-state New York. We didn’t know a single person going when we bought our tickets. We were lucky enough to stumble upon a message board on the festivals main website. I asked the usual questions about the festival and what to expect. There we met some cool people that invited us to camp with them for the weekend while attending the festival. We accepted, and in that weekend, we met some of the greatest human beings, from all over the world, that have become forever friends. We heard some awesome new bands and got to see bands we have been following for years, like my all-time favorite, Gov’t Mule. Over the years we have attended some other great festivals and checked off some bands on our must-see list. We decided the last couple of years to fill in our time at more local events doing what we love, watching live music! In doing so, we connected with editor Josh Noll a couple of times. Chris was able to share with Josh some photos of the bands we have seen. On August 2nd, Josh asked Chris to capture some bands at the new Club XL in Harrisburg. That is where our “ride” begins! The night started off with a very talented singer/guitarist/ songwriter from Lancaster, Corty Byron. This was our first time seeing Corty and we were not disappointed. In reading his Facebook page, the description stated, “pure, swampy, vintage rock ’n’ roll and soulful Americana”. Well, that was an understatement! He previously fronted the band The Green Onions, which he co-founded. As a solo act, he is very good, and we really enjoyed watching him perform. He has currently released three solo projects; ‘717’, ‘Histrionic’ and ‘Endless North’. He ends every show with the same message “Be excellent to each other”. If you ever get a chance to see him, please do, he is great! Next on the agenda was Duane Betts & Co. Betts, son guitarist from The Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts. Not knowing much about Duane or his music, I sat back and listened to the story he had to tell. Although he plays like his father, you can hear his own creativity in his music. His music is a mix of blues, rock and country. At first appearance on stage, he came across as shy. As he played his guitar and sang, you experienced the layers peel away and really felt his passion. Allman is the son of co-founder, Gregg Allman, of The Allman Brothers Band. He was the front man for the band Honeytribe and original member of the band Royal Southern Brotherhood. Devon’s newest collaboration is a mix of blues, rock with a touch of funk. Six Bar Break is a full throttle, roots rock trio, based out of Harrisburg. Their style and sound take a little bit of inspiration from yesterday and today. They are a definite DIY band that are constantly driven to create something on their own. Something built on the riffs, beats, and solos and glued together with a vocal begging to be heard, and a story to be told.

It was also cool to see the demographics of everyone who was listening to their song not only here in PA, but all over the world! Not only are they excited about the sound of this album, but they are also pretty proud of the message behind the album. Ben summed up the meaning behind the album nicely, “We’re all gonna fall down now and then. We’re all searching for the answers. We’re all hoping for the next sunrise is the start of something great, not everyone we meet is gonna have a heart of gold and not every day is gonna be your best, so do like Six Bar Break tells ya kiddies; keep putting one foot in front of the other. You’re not alone. We’re always out here, listening. Creating. Evolving.” Between the lyrics behind the songs, the music behind those lyrics, and of course Ben’s voice, Six Bar Break really draws you in to their show and waiting for more! If you’ve heard of Six Bar Break before chances are you’ve already noticed all of their cameras that are rolling at every show. Ben is always creating videos to share on youtube on all of the social media platforms so people

After Ben Bollinger, their lead singer/guitar player, battled thyroid cancer in 2011 he decided the best way to recover is to sing, and it’s even more fun to sing with friends so why not form a band. It took a few years to find the perfect band mates, but Ben is thrilled with how it all turned out. He found Robert Trowbridge (RT) on bass, and Dave Long on drums. The three of them create a very unique, but cool vibe. Their music quickly draws you in and you realize how you can relate to practically every song. They have been rockin’ area stages for almost four years, it’s awesome to see all they’ve accomplished in such a short time. They’ve already created 3 albums in those 4 short years. Their first album, “Echo Seven Nine” was independently released in September of 2016. “Broken Road” was released in May of 2017, and now starting September 1st you can pre-order their latest release, “Cleaner Than I Feel”. The songs, videos, etc. officially go live on September 28th, and the big CD Release Party will be September 29th at Cliff’s Tavern in New Cumberland. Six Bar Break (6BB) started recording “Cleaner Than I Feel” back in January and they can’t wait to share it with the world. This recording was done in their own studio, Studio Beat. Dave was particularly excited because it was his first time he was able to record with his own custom kit from Tone Custom Drums, his Saluda Cymbals, all of his gadgets from Scorpion Percussion, his own mics, etc. Once they got everything recorded and put together they reached out to their good friends in the industry: Erich Arndt from Shortbus Fight Club, and Jason Shaffer from Full Tilt Productions, for refining and suggestions to help them complete their final product. They did a sneak peak of the album and released one of their new songs, “Water’s Edge” on Reverbnation. Their September, 2018
for Buzzard Luck opening the show, so they can start partying with their fans early. They originally had their CD Release scheduled at Blue Moose, but due to their sudden closing they were scrambling for a venue, they are very grateful to Cliff’s Tavern for letting them have the show on their new stage! Six Bar Break can’t believe where this musical journey has already taken them, but they also can’t wait to see where it continues to go! It’s always a great turn of events when venues start calling you for dates instead of constantly chasing after the next gig. Even though they have a pretty good rotation of venues, they are always looking for new venues, cities, bands and fans! They plan on trying new avenues to become even more interactive with their fans at home and around the world with live streaming, so make sure and keep an eye out for that too. Our next adventure was one that I have been looking forward to for some time. One80 is a Williamsport based band that was first introduced to me a while back from an old friend that also happens to be a member of the band. I remember him telling me how excited he was to be part of this group. When Chris and I were asked to be part of Pennsylvania Musician Magazine, this was the first band I wanted to see and cover. Not because of having a friend in the band, but because I had to find out what the buzz with this band was about. So, on August 5th, we
Devon Allman Project photo by Chris Rider songs. They also threw in some other classics like ‘Friend of the Devil’, ‘Lean on me’, led by keyboardist Nicholas David. Name sound familiar? You might remember him as 2012’s season finalist on ‘The Voice’. The group then closed the night with an emotional/bluesy version of ‘Purple Rain’. This was a night of brilliant collaboration that will stick with me for a long time. It was truly an honor to see these boys on stage doing their own thing while respecting the legacy of their fathers.
Bikes and kickstands were up at 11am. Riders were off to start the 1st Annual Poker Run for Vogfest. Vogfest was created by Jim Cleveland and Ryan Hayes to help celebrate the memory of their long-time friend, David E. Vogelsong, who was tragically lost in a car accident one year ago. Approximately 35 riders and passengers toured 80 miles of beautiful Perry County. The ride concluded at The Facktory in Liverpool, where there was a celebration of life. There was great food, music, a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese Auction with items donated by local businesses. The music started off with David Furman D.J & Sound cranking the tunes before the beautiful voice of Corina Aucker of Manchester, York County, took the stage. She had her father, Bud “Buddy” Aucker; join her on stage with his guitar. Corina started singing as soon as she could talk. At age 16 her father taught her some cords on the guitar and she has been playing and singing ever since. She is truly talented and worth checking out. The headlining band was a 5-piece, progressive metal band, Balistic. This was their first public appearance in 14 years and boy did they rock the house! Duane Betts & Co. photo by Chris Rider We actually saw this next band, Runaway Stroller, twice in August; once at The Winery at Hunter’s Valley in Liverpool and then again at Shade Mountain Winery in Middleburg. Runaway Stroller is a Lewisburg acoustical duo consisting of vocalist, songwriter and rhythm guitar player, Johanna Kodlick and lead guitarist, singer, songwriter, Anthony Latt. The couple covers songs from the 1960’s to today including Rock, soul, funk, blues, folk and R&B They are excellent and I am probably safe to say they are the best acoustical duo I have had a chance to see live thus far.
went on a road trip to Bastress Mountain Winery, just outside of Williamsport. The owner, Frank, met us and instantly made us feel welcome. He recently purchased the winery along with his wife Sarah. It’s a beautiful place and not just a winery, but also a distillery, which Chris was excited about. The band consists of Jill Baker and Matt Eyer on vocals, Charlie Vincent on guitar, Andy Breen on lead guitar, Rich Baker on drums and Eric Berger, AKA “Cheese” on bass guitar. I was excited to see what they were doing with their musical talents these days as some of the members and I went to school together. I was pleasantly surprised. The band took the stage and instantly had people on their feet dancing. They are a very upbeat and energetic group covering 80’s, country, pop and classic rock. They interact great with the crowd and have good harmonies. You can tell they have a great time doing their thing and they want you to be part of it. They made for a fun afternoon. Catch a show sometime, you’re guaranteed to a good time! On August 18th, Vogfest began with riders meeting at 10am. A brief safety meeting was held along with a Blessing of the

When talking with Jim and Ryan, proceeds from this event will go to the family of Vogelsong and to fund Vogfest 2019. After Vogfest, we headed down to Harrisburg to see a band we grew up listening to, Soul Asylum. First on stage was a singer/ songwriter, Tony Ryder of Harrisburg. He was there performing as a solo act and performing songs he has written. I found him to be a very creative musician. It was both relaxing and refreshing to hear him perform. Some of you may know Tony from singing with a band out of Hershey called ‘The April Skies’. He is also in ‘Tony Ryder & True West’, which will be releasing a record soon. I am excited to hear more of Tony in the future.

Soul Asylum took the stage as the final act and talk about a flash back! This Minnesota band rocked the crowd playing old hits all night long. an unheard, live album that was recorded in 1992 “Live from Liberty Lunch, Austin, TX”. If you haven’t checked out Harrisburg’s new Club XL, you are missing out! It is a great place to see bands. They have a huge stage with great lighting and sound. The staff and stage crew do an amazing job with this place. It has quickly become my favorite go-to band venue. They are always adding new entertainment to their Facebook page so don’t forget to look them up and check out their full schedule on page 24 of this month’s issue.

Another summer winds down and transitions into fall this month, and outdoor live music activity will begin to gradually wind down as well. But late summer has been busy. Fairs and festivals brought a few nationally-known performers to the region in recent weeks. Blues Traveler and Pure Prairie League helped headline the Saturday leg of the two-day Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown, after the Devon Allman Project featuring Duane Betts headlined on Friday. Blues Traveler frontman and harmonica master John Popper gave a disclaimer at the start of their performance, disclosing that he had recently injured his shoulder but was still going to soldier on. John left the stage a few times during the performance, possibly to nurse that shoulder. This gave his bandmates – guitarist Chan Kinchla, bassist Tad Kinchla, keyboardist Ben Wilson and drummer Brendan Hill – opportunities to improvise, free-jam and transition toward various songs in the set. When he was on the stage, John feistily displayed his fast and furious harmonica talents, and it was interesting to observe his facial gyrations as he made those harps sing; he even tossed a few harmonicas out to the audience along the way. Blues Traveler did a number of songs from their forthcoming new album Hurry Up and Hang Around, including the set-opener “The Wolf Is Bumping,” “When You Fall Down,” “Accelerated Nation” and “Ode From the Aspect.” The group also performed favorites from their 30-year career such as the hits “Run-Around” and “Hook,” “The Mountains Win Again” and more. They also broke out a version of Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” with the harmonica being the subject of the musical duel, as well as the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias,” and for the encore, ZZ Top’s “La Grange.” Preceding Blues Traveler on the 1st Summit Stage, country rock pioneers Pure Prairie League celebrated their lengthy career. The group’s current roster – singer/guitarist Donny Lee Clark, keyboardist Randy Harper, pedal steel player John David Call, bassist/singer Mike Reilly and drummer Scott Thompson – performed songs from throughout the group’s career, plus shared stories and insights from that career. Among the numbers they performed were 1970s numbers such as “Two-Lane Highway,” “Misery Train” and their breakthrough 1975 hit “Amie.” I caught other performers as well during this day at Flood City Music Festival, including the maximum party set by Los Angeles’ Andy Frasco & the U.N., who mixed up high-powered soul, blues, rock and funk…The return of local roots rock favorites The Marauders after a 10-year hiatus. Singer/guitarist Ben Dumm, guitarist Brian Dumm, upright bass player Chris Lawson and drummer Abe Weber resurrected many of the group’s past favorites, including “Kill Pop Radio,” “My Revolver,” “Late Night Livin,’” “Lonely Road,” “Johnny Don’t Like It (When You Call Him Elvis),” “Alibi” and more…Pittsburgh singer/songwriter Paul Luc with his distinctive brand of Americana rock…Pittsburgh’s Stevee Wellons Band, generating spirited blues, soul and R&B, including original numbers plus stellar renditions of the Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post” and Stephen Stills’ “Love the One You’re With”…Pittsburgh’s Neon Swing X-Perience, jumping, jiving and rocking with a blend of swing, rock’n’roll, even some swaggering polkas and more… and Gentleman East, uniting Badlees alumni Bret Alexander, Paul Smith and Ron Simasek with former Breaking Benjamin guitarist Aaron Fink. They performed new Americana-geared rock songs, Badlees favorites such as “Fear of Falling” and “Angeline Is Coming Home,” a version of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and more. The 158th annual Clearfield County Fair also featured several renowned marquee performers – including Great White, Vixen and Faster Pussycat on Saturday, and Collective Soul and 3 Doors Down on Friday. I attended Friday’s concert…Prior to the main event, I caught my first look at Rattletrap Jack on the Grove stage. This was my first time seeing singer/guitarist Scott Robleski in action since the Heaven Tonite years; Scott, lead guitarist/ singer Matt Day, bassist Kevin Fry and drummer Adam Westover delivered a high-powered mix of country-flavored originals and favorites with classic rock numbers. The group switched between country and rock, doing numbers from Fleetwood Mac, Little Big Town, Brantley Gilbert, Bad Company, Queen, continued on page 17...

Highlights included a rockabilly spin on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” a rock-meets-hillbilly rendition of Leadbelly/Ram Jam’s “Black Betty,” the fusion of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” and Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London,” and original songs such as “Bullets and Bourbon” and “Lonesome Road.” Scott still has the voice, and Rattletrap Jack sounded tight and powerful, earning cheers from the audience from start to finish. I soon made my way to the Fair’s Grandstand stage for the main event. Opening the show, Collective Soul mixed new songs with classics from their catalog. Two songs in, singer Ed Roland tapped out a piano interlude that led into the group’s 1993 breakthrough hit, “Shine.” From there, Ed, his brother Dean Roland on rhythm guitar, lead guitarist Jesse Triplett, bassist Will Turpin and drummer Johnny Rabb continued with the popular FM radio tracks “Why Pt. 2” and “Heavy.” Collective Soul also did such numbers as “World Shakin’ Me Down,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Gel” and “Where the River Flows.” Ed expressed gratitude to the audience, telling them “Thank you for giving us a life!” This led into the final number, “Run,” which evolved into a singalong that trailed off as band members departed the stage. Next was 3 Doors Down, who proudly celebrated their brand of southern hard rock. The group’s current roster of singer Brad Arnold, guitarists Chet Roberts and Chris Henderson, bassist Justin Biltonen and drummer Greg Upchurch mixed favorites with newer song material. Opening with “Duck and Run,” 3 Doors Down mixed it up between hard rockers like “It’s Not My Time,” “Going Down in Flames,” “Citizen/Soldier,” “Still Alive,” a fiery cover of Charlie Daniels’ “In America,” “Loser” and their breakthrough hit “Kryptonite,” and ballads such as “Away from the Sun,” “Be Like That” and more. Brad continuously thanked the audience and exuded a nationalistic furvor through the set, and the group’s execution was tight and powerful. When the crowd demanded an encore, 3 Doors Down answered with their hit ballad “Here Without You,” before Brad saluted veterans, police, EMS and their families by dedicating “When I’m Gone” to them to end the night.
Altoona’s Railroaders Museum has remained busy in recent weeks. The Museum hosted the inaugural Altoona First Frontier Festival in late July, featuring four local, regional and national roots-based groups. Rising local favorites RailTowne commenced the music with their mixture of modern country hits. Lead singer and guitarist Ty Ayers, guitarists Kenny Murdick and Eric Wertz, bassist Paul Rainey, keyboardist Nate Beatty and drummer Zac Grace warmed up the arriving crowd with popular tunes from Dwight Yoakam, Kip Moore, Miranda Lambert, Randy Houser, Zac Brown Band, Jason Aldean and more. Mama Corn then followed with their blend of traditional bluegrass, original folk and bluegrass numbers, grassed-up covers and more. Singer/guitarist Bruce Forr, banjo player/singer Jeremy Nelson, upright bassist Bryan Homan and dobro player, singer and harmonicat Johnny Stevens did tunes from their CD’s such as “About a Minute Ago,” “Someday Knock on Wood,” “In the High Rise,” “Sing!” and “The Hanging of Alfred Andrews,” as well as numbers from Tom Paxton, Crosby Stills & Nash and more. Next was the first Altoona appearance by Pittsburgh soul rockers The Commonheart. Ten members strong this day, The Commonheart stirred up the festival crowd with hearty, pulsing and soulful sounds as they mixed original tunes with a few select covers. Singer Clinton Clegg sank full heart and soul into his commanding throaty growl – it’s hard to avoid comparisons to the late Joe Cocker here, but Clinton has that voice! And he and The Commonheart did two songs that became classics from Cocker, the Randy Newman-penned “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” and for the finale – the fired-up Cocker take on the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends.” The group also mixed songs from their Grown CD with some newer tunes; from the CD they did “Questions,” “You Need a Man,” “Cannonball,” “Aloysius” and their version of Al Green’s “I’m A Ram.” The Commonheart’s performance was full of spirit and energy, from Clinton’s fire-and-brimstone vocals to Mike Minda’s scorching guitar solos, Lucas Bowman’s organ groan, sassy brass from trumpet man Nate Insko and sax lady Abby Gross, bright backing harmonies from Mariko Reid, Kenny Stockard and acoustic guitarist Mike DeLuca, and the steady rhythm foundations from bassist Anton DeFade and drummer Shawn McGregor. The First Frontier Festival crowd loved it, with many folks giving

Headliners The HillBenders finished the festival with their unique undertaking, as they converted The Who’s Tommy from a rock opera to a ‘bluegrass opry’ to end the day. The Missouri-based lineup of mandolin player Nolan Lawrence, bassist Gary Rea, guitarist Jimmy Rea, banjo player Mark Cassidy and their “Keith Moon of dobro,” Chad Graves pulled it off, interpreting the music of Tommy in their own string music vibe, and offering narration of the rock opera’s story line along the way. Once they completed Tommy, The HillBenders closed their set with several of their own songs, including “Gettysburg,” “On the Radio,” “Hey Boys” (co-written by Ozark Mountain Daredevils founder Randle Chowning) and more. The first Altoona First Frontier Festival was well attended and was a great event start to end, and organizers hope to grow and expand this event in the years ahead! The Railroaders Museum’s Alive at Five Summer Concert Series continued in late July with a performance by Philadelphia-based Genesis tribute Trespass. Star 69 opened the night with an upbeat set that spotlighted mostly 1980s-era rock favorites. Star 69 features a seasoned cast of Bedford County musicians: singer Dustin Reisling, keyboardist/guitarist/singer Jeff Goss, guitarist/singer Larry Grube, lead guitarist Scott Diehl, bassist Dustin Lybarger and drummer John Jones. THE PROFESSOR continued..... tertained the arriving Railroaders Museum crowd with “80’s music without the hair,” doing solid work on hits and favorites from the J. Geils Band, Romantics, Escape Club, Bon Jovi, Poison, Robert Palmer, Rick Springfield, Def Leppard, Tommy Tutone, Michael Jackson and more. Star 69 had fun, and
even triggered some early dance action during their set. Trespass followed shortly, specializing in the early Peter Gabriel-fronted progressive rock years of Genesis. These five musicians – keyboardist Michael LaBuono, guitarist Marc Britton, Flip Britton on bass and 12-string guitar, drummer Brian Powers and singer/flutist Brian Filone in the Gabriel role – captured the early Genesis sound and vibe almost perfectly. From the moment they opened their first set with “Watcher of the Skies,” and singer Brian donned Peter Gabriel’s overlord alien bat-wing costume, I was hooked! Trespass spotlighted deep and lengthy cuts from the early Genesis catalog; including “The Musical Box” (with Brian donning an old man head mask, representing the ghost character Henry from the song), “Get ‘Em Out By Friday,” “Firth of Fifth,” “The Cinema Show” and the 20-minute-plus “Supper’s Ready” (with Brian wearing a flower head and geometrical headgear). For the nightcap set, Trespass focused on the latter stage of Peter Gabriel’s tenure with Genesis, performing mostly numbers from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album, as well as the start of the Phil Collins-fronted era with material from 1976’s A Trick of the Tail. They opened the set with “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” and also did “Back in N.Y.C.,” “Counting Out Time” and “Carpet Crawlers” (with Brian wearing Gabriel’s ‘lawnmower’ headgear). From A Trick of the Tail they did “Dance on a Volcano” and “Squonk,” before closing out the performance with “I Know What I Like (in Your Wardrobe)” off 1973’s Selling England By the Pound album. Trespass was musically superb – Michael was a wizard on keys, providing many stunning solos and displays through the performance. Drummer Brian, and Marc and Flip on the strings were tight and coordinated as well, and impressively pulled off this complex song material with its shifts in tempos, chords and dynamics. And Brian Filone was unbelievable in the Peter Gabriel role – you could close your eyes and think you were hearing the real deal! He pulled off Peter Gabriel’s sound and look, even capturing his hairdos from various points of early Genesis. This was easily one of my favorite shows to hit the Railroaders Museum stage so far, and took me back to my early years of discovering progressive rock! Several church picnics and festivals provided late August musical highlights. St. Bernard Church in Hastings hosted their
annual three-night Homecoming Picnic, featuring live music each night. I attended on the first night, Friday, and saw Johnstown’s Flood City Brass in action. Nine members strong this night, Flood City Brass struck up the music and dance party with their brassy blend of classic rock, soul, pop and funk favorites. Singers Natalie Kurchak and Tom Pavic both delivered potent and soulful voices, with Natalie paying homage to recently-departed “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin with stirring renditions of “Chain of Fools” and “Respect.” The horn section of trumpet player Dan Perich, sax players Jen Shuty and Greg Maiocco shined on brassy classics from Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ides of March, Steely Dan and more. Randy Rutherford delivered precise and stunning guitar solo work, and Luis Gonzalez III dazzled with his keyboard solos and fills. Anchoring the sound was the strong rhythm section of drummer/singer John Homerski, Jr. and bassist Andy Heinze. Flood City Brass kept the large Homecoming crowd happy with numbers from Bruce Springsteen, Wild Cherry, Blondie, Doobie Brothers, Donna Summer, Sam & Dave, Abba and more. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Polish National Church in Lilly kept with tradition and presented their annual Polish Picnic in late August. Leading off the afternoon’s music were The Hallmarks, who played a mix of polkas, waltzes, obereks, standards and more. Six members strong, The Hallmarks stirred up some polka dancers and smiles with such numbers as “The Lovesick Polka,” “The Early Morning Oberek,” the “I Love You Polka,” a polka medley including the local “Nanty Glo Polka,” “In Heaven There Is No Beer,” “They’re Always in the Way Polka,” “Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie” and more. Providing the nightcap music was Raging Slagg, mixing country and vintage rock’n’roll. Led by guitarist/singer Chet “Pop” Harker, Raging Slagg quickly packed the dance floor as they did numbers from Dwight Yoakam, Del Shannon, Keith Whitley, Brooks & Dunn, Don Williams, ZZ Top and more. During summer season, Vale Wood Farms near Loretto hosts “pasture parties,” featuring local food vendors, children’s activities, the farm’s ice cream and other dairy treats, and live music. I caught the latter portion of Vale Wood’s August Pasture Party, with Striped Maple Hollow providing the music. Singers Jayna continued on page 19

Mood and Sonya Giuffre, guitarist/singer Micah Mood, mandolinist Adam Milkovich and bassist Leo Drager performed a selection of traditional folk, bluegrass and original songs. Their final set of the evening included numbers such as Hank Williams’ gospel song “I Saw the Light” and the traditional “Bury Me Beneath the Willow,” before a sudden close lightning strike from an approaching thunderstorm forced an early end to their set and the party. I also saw Lux & Company as they entertained at the Roxbury Bandshell in Johnstown during late July. My own band, the Backyard Rockers, started the evening, before Lux & Company – the Lux brothers Mark, Mike and Darien – followed with a variety of acoustic classics from the Police, CCR, Queen, Pink Floyd, America, Phil Collins, Bon Jovi and more. Mark shared a few stories along the way, and the group wrapped up the show with a sing and clap-along edition of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” just before raindrops began to fall. Raining Blue – joined by Ron “Music Man” Balestino – performed at Altoona’s Valley View Park Amphitheater in late July, part of the Blair County Recreation Commission’s summer concert series. The Raining Blue pairing of Walt Yatta and Amy Williamson plus Ron entertained a good-sized audience with a pleasant mix of light blues, funk and jazz-flavored takes on pop and rock’n’roll favorites. Amy and Ron alternated singing duties throughout the performance, with Amy switching between basses and Walt switching between keys and ukulele. I thoroughly enjoyed this group’s fresh and innovative spins on their song material; some of the highlights included Amy’s bluesy, jazzy arrangement of the Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride,” the Brazilian/samba-leaning take on Steve Miller’s “Abracadabra,” the Ron-fronted version of the Youngbloods’ “Get Together,” and Paul Simon’s “Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard,” where shakers and tambourines were passed out to audience members to play along. The trio also did tunes from Eric Clapton, Zac Brown Band, Rick Nelson, Queen, Stray Cats, Bob Seger, Tom Petty, Ray Charles, Dobie Gray, Eagles, Loggins & Messina and more. I escaped for a week of vacation early last month, returning to North Carolina’s Outer Banks in the Kitty Hawk area.

Again, the Wednesday afternoon part of my vacation week was spent at Scarborough Faire Shopping Village in Duck, North Carolina, which hosts the weekly Wednesday “Faire Days” celebration during summer season. I caught up with some musical friends I have seen before here, local favorites Bill & Friends. Bill is singer and bassist Bill Downing, and his musical friends this afternoon included guitarist Chris Francis, drummer Roger Deaton and keyboardist Steve Utt. These guys played two sets that mixed original tunes with classic rock, blues, folk, pop hits and more. They did numbers from Santana, Allman Brothers, Bob Marley, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Slim Harpo, Bob Dylan, Bobby Bland, Chuck Berry and others. They also did original numbers such as the combo “Nags Head/Nobody Loses” off their CD I’m Do’n Good, plus some newer songs as well. Bill & Friends had fun as they kicked back and made music together; and shoppers and passers-by showed their appreciation. Indoors, I caught several shows at McGarvey’s in recent weeks, including the first area visit of Maryland’s Offensive. Harrisburg’s Kevin Brem sings lead, flanked by guitarists Steven Shreve and Leon Sohail, bassist Michael Murphy and drummer Brett Bronstein. Offensive mixed 1980s-era classic and power metal with hard-hitting original songs. They introduced original numbers such as “Mankind” and “King of the Underworld,” and did impressive work on tunes from Judas Priest, Dio, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Misfits, Motorhead and more. Other shows I caught recently at McGarvey’s included the heavy-rocking triple-bill of It Is Written, Naildriver and Klockwick…the three-band bill of Negan, Washington, DC’s DoubleMotorcycle and Small Town Horror Show…And the punk-fueled triple-bill of Dave Hates Everything, The Flannels and Rik Golden. News and notes…Wheatus, Sophie B. Hawkins and Left Lane Cruiser will be the headliners at this month’s Northern Appalachian Folk Festival, happening Sept. 8 throughout downtown Indiana…Hosted by Simple Gifts, the Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering event will take place at Greenwood Furnace State Park from September 7-9, and will feature two concerts, workshops, jamming and dancing open to all ages and experience levels…Greenbean Coffee House is presenting their inaugural Open Stage event on Sept. 16 at Altoona’s Railroaders Muse-

Love at the End of the World, explores life, death, love and where it all fits in the context of today’s volatile world and times. The Clarks continue their lean toward a more Americana-based sound, and country tones permeate many of the album’s 11 songs. Part of The Clarks’ extended touring family, Gary Jacob’s pedal steel and 12-string electric guitar help to flesh out the group’s rural edge, along with keyboardist/guitarist Skip Sanders and Dave’s son, Noah, on additional guitars. The album opens on a happy and upbeat vibe; watching a daughter grow up provides the lyrical spark to the disc-opener “She’s on Fire,” and the punchy “The Longest One Night Stand” celebrates a bar-bred match made in heaven. However, love doesn’t work out so well on the ensuing two numbers, “Witness to a Crime” and “Roses.” The rustic-flavored “What Do You Do” ponders the dynamics of love separated by life on the road, while the bluesy “Keep Your Eyes on the Road” offers a mantra for living life and staying the course. On the more serious side, the Greg-penned “Dying to Live” documents a dad’s cancer battle and its impending finality, while Scott’s “Summer Setting Sun” waxes philosophical after a father’s passing. The hardest-rocking moment on the album, the fast-paced “In Blood” explores the human cost of terrorism. But perhaps the most powerful track on the album is the most simply-arranged one, the album-ending title track “Madly in Love at the End of the World,” Scott’s poetic observation on maintaining one’s love, passion, humanity and integrity in a world seemingly teetering on the brink; Scott’s acoustic guitar and
soaring voice are nicely supported by guest Simon Cummings’ cello accompaniment. Madly in Love at the End of the World is the work of a seasoned band who is comfortable in their own skin; the songs are honest, heartfelt and relatable. The melodies and words connect, and the performances are confident and steady. Produced by Dave Hidek and the band, and engineered and mixed by Hidek at The Church Recording Studio in Pittsburgh, the album sounds balanced and full, and – in the tradition of previous Clarks recordings – the production is consistent and uncluttered, letting the songs and performances do the talking. After three decades of doing this, The Clarks cannot make a bad album – and Madly in Love at the End of the World shows the artistry, poetic lyricism, confidence and wisdom of musicians who have been at this for a little while. This ranks up there with their best works to date. (You can obtain this CD through The Clarks’ website, www.clarksonline.com.) ANDY MOWATT’S STEELY JAM – VOL. 1: ROCK.HARD. FUNK (no label) Several years ago, Lancaster-based guitar adventurer Andy Mowatt toyed with a suggestion from some former Lebanon Valley College roommates, and started developing some new arrangements on Steely Dan songs. The resulting band project was Steely Jam, and Andy included a reworking of Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva” on his 2014 solo album An End
to the Means. But Andy and his Steely Jam colleagues wanted to explore creating original music, resulting in the first Steely Jam fulllength CD, Vol. 1: Rock.Hard. Funk (as well as the recent and subsequent rebranding of the band project to the monicker Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement). Andy and his cast of musical friends deliver just what the album title advertises, an energetic mixture of hard-hitting funky grooves, jazz-styled improvisation and instrumental fireworks galore. Each tune is a different, self-contained adventure where Andy and his associates – keyboardist Aaron Trasatt, bassist Quinn Slonaker, drummers Jaren Angud and Taylor Wade, sax men Logan Kurtek, Max Swan and Chris Smucker, trumpeters John Maurer and Michael Burton, and woodwind player Jason Mescia – cut loose, match musical wits, blend, solo and give listeners an exhilarating joy ride. Most of the dozen tracks are instrumentals; the disc-opener “Jello Molds” sets the table with hard-edged funk, driven by big beats and displaying tasty synth, guitar and sax nuances. There are feisty improvisational exercises like “Mainline” and the driving “The Extra Dank,” heated funky displays like the strutting “Funkyland” and “Full Blouse,” and an atmospheric interlude with “Heavy on the Juice.” The group lays down the fusion on “UTZ (Part 1)” and generates a disco groove on “UTZ (Part 2).” Two songs are vocals; Tuck Ryan shows a clear, soulful croon on the catchy “Not the Only One,” while keyboardist Aaron sings on the merging of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up” with Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is.” The performances are exciting and sharp; you can tell this cast had a blast generating this groove fest! Produced and arranged by Andy, and recorded, mixed and mastered by Michael Washkevich, this album sounds
clean and vibrant, with the instruments sounding balanced and present, and the performances doing the talking without clutter or unneeded bells and whistles. Vol. 1: Rock.Hard.Funk shows talented musical cats throwing caution to the wind, experimenting and having fun; and it whets the appetite for whatever musical adventures Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement has in store in the months ahead. (The CD can be obtained through Andy’s website, www.andymowatt.com.) DYLAN E. MILLER – CARRION EP (no label) A fifth generation musician, Huntingdon-based singer and songwriter Dylan E. Miller began playing music at an early age, and has dabbled in a diverse range of musical styles so far in his young career. That diversity quickly becomes apparent on his fivesong EP, Carrion, as Dylan teams with a number of guest musicians to indulge various creative musical flavors. The result is a fresh-sounding set with captivating melodies and lush sonic backdrops. Flamenco and European-styled folk informs the romantic disc-opening ode “I’ll Go,” while Arti Funero’s keys and concertina gently guide the soaring “Your Smile.” Powered by Chris Rattie’s drumbeats, “Three Crows” takes a faster, rock-edged direction. Dylan
teams with guest singer Olivia Jones to provide a potent duet on the hauntingly beautiful “Favorite Distraction,” while Johnny Stevens’ harmonica punctuates the playful country-meets-funk instrumental disc-closer “I Cried.” Playing acoustic guitar and mandolin, Dylan sings his material with a calm, unimposing approach, with the arrangements and instrumentation surrounding and supporting his voice. His cast of guests shines, including the aforementioned Olivia Jones, Chris Rattie, Johnny Stevens and multi-instrumentalist and co-arranger Arti Funero, plus Daniel Collins on fiddle and Junior Tutwiler on slide guitar. All perform for the songs, and the fleshed-out arrangements give each song a full, layered and deep presence. Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Tom “Bone” Edmonds (who also assists on percussion), Carrion sounds clear, balanced and broad. And even though the musical styles presented here are diverse, the EP flows smoothly and sounds like a cohesive whole. Dylan E. Miller’s eager and uninhibited approach to musical variety makes Carrion an engaging, pleasant listen, and represents Dylan as a musical explorer whose adventure is just beginning. MATT AQUILINE & THE DEAD END STREETS – COMING HOME EP (no label) A Pittsburgh native who lived and performed music in the nation’s capital for nearly two decades, Matt Aquiline relocated back to his hometown in 2013, and subsequently formed his current group, the Dead End Streets. rock and soul into a tasty mixture. Matt plays guitar and mandolin, and he and Heather Catley share lead singing duties. Neil Carr plays guitar, along with Evan Cvejkus on drums, Stefan Rodriguez on bass and Bill Maruca on keys, accordion and slide guitar. The sound is spirited and sassy, yet cordial and pleasant; yielding hints and reminders of classic roots rock artists like The Band and Neil Young. Consistent with the EP title, Matt addresses the concept of travel and returning home on a couple of the songs; the disc-opener “Dead End Streets” touts preferring the harder dead-end road over the easy highway and benefiting from the lessons learned from that path, while the contemplative “The Break” reflects on coming home from the realization of an erroneous decision. Matt ultimately celebrates the inspiration and liberation derived from being back in his home state on the pleasant disc-closer “Pennsylvania,” with guest Rob James of The Clarks fleshing out the song’s rustic mood on mandolin. Meanwhile, Heather ponders whether to take a chance on love on “Survivable,” and Matt shares observations on dysfunctional people on the short, simple and quarky “I Know (Some Crazy People).” The presentation here is relaxed and sincere, as Matt and Heather sing the words with comfort, heart and conviction. The instrumentation meshes well, creating a warm, full and smooth backdrop to carry these songs. Produced by Matt and Dana Cannone, and recorded and mixed at The Church Recording Studio in Pittsburgh, Coming Home sounds crisp, balanced and uncluttered, allowing the power of the songs and performances to carry the day. Matt Aquiline & the Dead End Streets craft a warm, rustic set with Coming Home, a happy and thoughtful musical homecoming which provides a treat for the ears. (The CD can be obtained through CD Baby, www.cdbaby. com.) MFG – IS THERE LIFE AFTER ROCK? (no label) The group name MFG is an acronym of the last names of the project’s three core collaborators – guitarist and singer John McKelvey, drummer Skip Fisher and singer Bobby Gates. The group follows up their 2015 debut CD, Don’t Kill the Moment, with a new sixsong EP, Is There Life After Rock? The group’s sound remains consistent with the first album; straight-ahead hard rock’n’roll with slight hints of 1980s-era pop, punk and alternative. John wrote/co-wrote most of the songs, all which present different angles of attack and hook-laden melodies. The title track “Is There Life After Rock?” is a shadowy, introspective number about stepping away from the live band stage and reflecting on the gift of being able to perform music to fans and audiences. Written by Bobby, “Lucas and Me” is a playful number celebrating the joy of a grandson and being a new grandfather. Guest Lane Williamson – John’s bandmate in the late-1970s Altoona-based hard rock band Piranha – sings stern lead vocals on the crunchy, heavy-rocking “Back on the Streets. The disc also contains another hard-rocker, the erotic-toned “Naked Truth,” as well as the upbeat disc-opening groupie ode “Brighton Girls” and the ocean-themed relationship number “Starfish.” MFG’s performances are solid and inspired; Bobby sings with range and clarity, and John displays the guitar fireworks that have earned him legendary status on the Altoona area music scene. Skip provides the steady beats, with Steve Campbell tying it together with fluid bass lines. Produced by the band, and recorded and engineered by Rick Claar, this CD sounds basic and lets the performances do the talking. Is There Life After Rock? answers its own question, showing that these elder-statesmen of the Altoona area music scene still have fuel in the tank and can generate strong rocking anthems.
