Well its back to the keys for a little monthly update. As the world around us seems to be blowing up with chaos, destruction , and civil unrest, I find myself wondering when will we ever get the triumphant return of local music? With current restrictions it is sure making it hard for people to get out and listen to some tunes. While yes it seems hard to get out and put your mask on to walk around the venue, or a little annoying to have to buy food at every spot you stop at. These are the things we have to do to keep the scene alive. Please when you go out to venues, don’t take your frustration out on the staff. They are more then likely more pissed about it then you, and have to deal with it everyday at work. So be nice and just wear your mask when they ask, buy some food and enjoy your show.

This month I got the chance to stop out at The Shermans Creek Inn. I have not been to the old Shermans Creek Inn for years, but I kept hearing about outside live music and decided it was time to go check it out. Zach “Kingfish” King was rounding up his gang of musical cohorts for a night of rockin’ country music.

This sounded like a perfect night to stop in. When we got there the parking lot was pretty full and the seating was all but taken.

We did weasel our way into some seats thanks to Daniel Braught.

We sat down and although the staff was severely out numbered I was surprised at how quick we were attended to and had drinks in hand and food on the way. The staff did a great job all night and were always on their feet back and forth running drinks and food. The Shermans Creek Inn is under new ownership and you can tell that they really care about the quality of service that customers receive.

For those not familiar with Zach King he is a man of many hats and is always out promoting local music and bringing some great acts into the area that we wouldn’t see otherwise His musical love extends to his talents as a musician. It is always a treat and you never know who he will drag up on stage on any given night We did miss the beginning but a couple stand outs from the night were Daniel Braught from the Band Seldom Said No. He did a bunch of great songs including some Zepplin and to pay his respects some Justin Townes Earle who just recently passed away. After Daniel, Zach took back the stage and performed some originals along with some John Prine, Neil Young, Springsteen, Turnpike Troubadours, Merle Haggard and more. Zach was also joined by Lindsay Hutchinson in a couple duets and they told a cute story about how they met at a local “shitty bar” on an open mic night. Zach who can’t refuse to sing a song for a crowd of rowdy bar goers, grabbed his guitar and bummed a cigarette and took the stage playing Tyler Childers “Feathered Indian”. In that moment Lindsay knew he was worthy of a second date. Zach

gave his wingman the go ahead to leave and the rest has been history. It was a cute story and hearing them perform together sounds like they were made for each other.

One of my favorite songs of the night was led by Chubediah and included the whole gaggle of friends singing “Trailer Park Woman”. Its a great song and one you have to see these guys perform live to appreciate.

As the night was winding down, we got word of a small social distancing party not far from the Inn that had some live music.

When we got there we were treated to a small performance from 4 of the members of Cabinet. I had heard of the band but have never gotten to see them live. Needless to say we were very happy we made the journey to go check them out. Upon arrival I was greeted by Sarah Staub who was wondering who let the press in haha.

Sarah has been a family friend for years and her Dad was a huge part in getting the paper started. She informed me that the show they were to play with Keller Williams was canceled and some of the guys still wanted to play some music. Even though we were party crashing everyone there was super cool and made us feel welcomed. The band had a nice stage to perform on and there was also plenty of room for everyone to hang out. It was good to see people enjoying some live music in a little bit of a more relaxed setting. Even though they were missing members it didn’t show in the performance. Their slogan “high on Pennsylvania Bluegrass”, which is printed on their merch, is a great slogan and was exactly how I left the party. It

was a great surprise ending to an awesome night of music. I can’t wait till I get a chance to catch the full band in the future.

So, what’s happening in live music for the month of September?

On the 5th the long awaited Monsters of Tribute show is taking place at Artie’s Bar & Grill in Frenchtown, NJ. Although this is not a PA show it does have some great PA bands in it. Maiden America, Penntera, and Victim of Vengeance. The show is presented by Mad Hatter Entertainment and tickets are just $10.

The Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel has a full month of outdoor on the deck music scheduled for September. From Cody Wiley, Merely Players, Terry Strongheart, DMC Duo, Mycenea Worley and many more. Go check out the ad for times and dates. The Eagle has been adapting to all the changes and is not one to let a silly little pandemic slow them down. Please, Please go support them!!

Another guy really keeping busy is Ed Varner, he has a full schedule of shows from Millersburg to Milroy, Burnham and everywhere in between. Ed puts on an entertaining show so please go catch him live.

“Live on the Farm” at Meadow Brooke Gourds, being presented by Molly Pitcher Brewing Company features Copper Bets with special guest Aaron Getchell on September 12th. Tickets are limited and you have to purchase a 16x16 “Space” for up to 5 people so get your tickets quick on this one. It sounds like a neat event that is a little more then just music. You can find out all about it on Molly Pitcher Brewing Companies facebook page.

Another big event is The Children’s Miracle Network Music Festival Presented by The Space Station and Mad Hatter Entertainment. The event is being held at The Mechanicsburg Club Picnic Grounds on October 3rd. With performances by Stoned Alice, Wrath OF Typhon, Nine D, STEEL, Ebenezer Screw, Observe The 93rd, Road Case, Penntera and an acoustic set by Relics. Following is the full event information:

Also this month be on the lookout for some new albums hitting the scene. Suicide Puppets new album “Tales of Living & Dying on Slaughter Ridge Road” is now available for pre-order and Defiant is releasing there Deluxe edition of “The Anarch”-EP on Curtain Call Records with some extra bonus tracks so be sure to check that out as well.

I feel like the theme song of my life is Gloria Gaynor’s song, “I will survive!” I feel like my life is a constant battle of trying to stay compliant, trying to be a good example, a good Mom, wife, etc.. and half of that time is also spent on trying to keep myself sane! Trying to find a release, entertainment, LIVE MUSIC! I even recently got a kayak from a friend, and I’ve been spending a lot of time in my boat! I’m very lucky and I work from home all day, but when 5pm hits, I pretty much sprint out my front

door! I was able to find some entertainment this month. I am very grateful to all of the venues, restaurants, etc. that are still finding a way to have live music. I know it’s not easy, but it is greatly appreciated.

My first night out was a special one, Mom came down and we went out to the Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel for some amazing food and entertainment by DMC Duo. This pandemic has kept Mom and I from going on our adventures, so we were long overdue. We had a great visit, ate some amazing food, and we both loved finally getting to hear some live music again. DMC Duo, Darrell and Marisa play so many songs that make you want to sing along. Marisa has a fantastic voice and sings most of the songs, but Darrell sings a few songs too. They have amazing harmonies, and every time I see them perform you can’t help but notice how well they perform together, they understand each other in a way only they could! They play pretty much anywhere they possibly can. This month alone, I actually caught them playing 3 times. I also saw them at Snitz Creek Brewing in Annville, and Midway Bowling out in Carlisle. Don’t forget, the Eagle Hotel offers Customer Appreciation Days on Sunday with 10% off their Entire Menu! They also have other amazing deals and entertainment throughout the month. Check out their ad in this issue for all of the details.

On a beautiful afternoon/evening I headed down to the Racehorse Tavern for Stonewood Acoustic, or as they refer, Stonewood “lite”. When I got there the show was in full swing and all of the tables were full. Luckily the rest of the Stonewood guys were there supporting Shannon and Kenny and I was able to join them at their table. It was awesome to see the guys all there even though they weren’t technically playing. Martini was handed an extra mic, and was joining in for some harmonies throughout the show. At one point Shannon took a little break, and it was Martini and Kenny on the stage. Even playing their “lite” version of their

show it was still so sad that we couldn’t get up and dance and sing along! I’m so happy that people are still getting out there and supporting business like Racehorse Tavern. This really isn’t easy on anyone. Please make sure and tip your servers even more than usual to help them get thru these crazy times! Stonewood has also been playing all over the place, even going as far as Seacrets down in OCMD. One place that they have definitely been having one heck of a party is at the Burning Bridge Tavern in Wrightsville. Out & About continued...

small businesses in town, by helping the show go on! They actually release the open container law on the street, so then everyone is partying, dancing, and having a great time. That’s what I don’t understand.. why can’t we all just work together. If you’re nervous about people partying without masks, etc. then stay home. But let the people who are healthy and willing to take the risk, to get out and enjoy life. Every day is a risk, just driving your car, or heck, even walking down the steps in my house, but we can’t live in fear. I know, maybe I’ll get COVID, and I do have asthma, etc.. so I am at a greater risk than some, but I simply can’t live in fear forever. It’s time to rip the bandaid off and get back to rock n’ roll! I hope more boros, towns, townships, etc.. get together and figure out ways to help the show go on!

Another town that is trying to do their part is Harrisburg city. Every Saturday night they shut down part of 2nd St, and literally put tables in the street! Now they are even having live bands on the sidewalk right in front of Hops, Vines, and Vineyards. One Saturday night I finally made it in for the tail end of Emily’s Toybox. I was told that the bands play til 11pm, but turns out they only play from 7-9 pm. Bourbon St. and Taste of Key West are both open serving drinks and food.

You’re supposed to keep your mask on when walking around and you’re supposed to sit down to drink your drinks. You’re still not allowed to stand up and dance. So please, sit down and enjoy the show! It was awesome to hear Emily’s Toybox rocking out with their full band. I’m bummed I missed most of their show. I’m not sure who is all on the schedule coming up, but I do know Smooth Like Clyde will be playing Saturday, Sept. 5th at 7:30. It will be Labor Day

Speaking of Labor Day, the Kipona Festival is going to have food trucks on City Island just like they did for the 4th of July. The food trucks will only be there on Saturday, Sept 5th from 3-8pm, followed by fireworks at 8:15. All 3 days of the Kipona, there will be virtual fun, with live music, artisans with their wares, kids games, etc. They really want to make sure we are all still having safe fun! It was a gorgeous night, so the bikes were out in full force, I saw lots of familiar faces, everyone was enjoying the amazing Thursday evening. Susquehanna has a great set up for events and a truck bed for a nice sized stage for the band. Road Case will also be playing at the Children’s Miracle Network Music Festival on Oct. 3rd at the Mechanicsburg Club Picnic Grounds. I’m glad to see some special shows popping up around the area. Please keep me in the loop of any shows happening, you just never know where I will show up next!

The next special show of the month was Throw Down in the Vines at Cassel Vineyards. This was a benefit for Flag Blankets hosted by the Rothrock Foundation. If you don’t already know, the Rothrock Foundation is an amazing company that supports the US and beyond in Natural Disasters, and really anytime that someone needs help. At this event they were raising funds and awareness for Flag Blankets. This organization donates one of a kind Flag Blankets to our veterans. Out & About continued...

good friends Terri and Joanie. We did a massive loop and we hit up: Shy Bear, Rusty Rail, a Buggy Museum, Jackass Brewing Company, the scenic overlook before Williamsport where we saw storms all around us! Therapy Brewing (fave of the day), New Trail, and then we finally ended up at a campground in Winfield, PA called Little Mexico for Honeypump. The original plan was to camp at Little Mexico and have the opportunity to enjoy a full band performance. Due to the chance of rain, we decided to do the brewery tour instead. We truly had a blast and had amazing beer everywhere we went. The necessity to always buy food is very annoying, but it all worked out and it really wasn’t that bad.

Of course if it is a Rothrock event, there is going to be music! The first act of the night was Katie Rubino. Katie is an 18 yo singer/songwriter from right here in PA. Her voice was absolutely beautiful and she really has some amazing original music. Unfortunately, right after her set a terrible downpour came flying in, everything got drenched, but in true Rothrock attitude, no one let a little rain or a little obstacle get in their way of the fun. Everyone ran for shelter for a bit, but as soon as the storm passed, everyone grabbed their chairs and set them back up for the music. I felt awful for the sound guy because his equipment got drenched. He actually had to pull out an emergency set of equipment out of his truck for the 2nd half. Angie Keilhauer from Nashville, TN played next. She was on the voice a few years ago, and has since taken the bull by the horns. She does work for Disney and has written many well known songs that you hear from some of the bigger artists in Nashville. The ladies were all taking the time to explain their songs, why they wrote them, the meaning behind them, etc. Angie shared the stage with another singer/songwriter, Bridgette Tatum. Bridgette has also written a bunch of great songs for people like Jason Aldean, Randy Houser, etc. All of the ladies really had beautiful voices and it was just a great night of chillin and listening to music at Cassel Vineyards. Thanks to the Rothrock Foundation for once again another great event!

Steph of Honeypump / photo by Rachel Rocks Therapy Brewing, in Montoursville, is absolutely gorgeous!! It is a very small brewery, but due to the pandemic, you can only buy beer to go, and then you can tailgate in the parking lot. We met a lot of super awesome people from all over the place! It’s always fun getting the chance to talk to people and get to know them.

Unfortunately, at most of the other places they frown on you trying to socialize with other tables, it truly is sad, especially for talkative people like us! Honeypump was very happy to see some familiar faces walk in. For all of the times I’ve seen Stephanie and Ritt Casey out supporting other live musicians, it was awesome to finally see them on stage doing their thing. Steph is an amazing keyboard player and vocalist! We all know I love to see keys in a band! Due to the pandemic they are currently playing with a new line up, even though they’ve only played 3 shows together, they really sounded great. They had amazing harmonies, and truly covered some music I never heard played before, and some of my favorites! The one truly amazing part.. we were allowed to dance and bang our heads!!! And boy did we!!! My neck is reminding me, that it has been way too long since we had a night out like that!! After their show, we headed down the road to home, and got to sleep in our nice comfy beds! It was a very fun day of adventuring with friends!

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! As the pandemic continues, music artists are doing their best to provide entertainment and satisfy their creative outlets. Online streaming concerts have become quite the norm and local artists are being able to perform to limited crowds. The restaurant, Taste Key West, has been doing a great job bringing bands on Saturdays to downtown Harrisburg’s 2nd Street, which is closed to traffic thus allowing outdoor dining. Swisher Sweets, Kurlou Reggae AllStars, Emily’s Toybox, Soul Miners Union and a Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band have all played recently and next month features Smooth Like Clyde and possibly The Martini Bros. The band, Happy Sally, put on a great show with their honky tonk country music at Springgate Winery on August 15th - which featured both their original music as well as country classics. Two bigger shows announced for next month include legendary locals - KIX on September 5th and The Sharks on September 19th. KIX will play the Susquehanna Valley Event Center in Selinsgrove with limited tickets available to provide a safe occupancy level. Tickets are $45 and the event will operate at 10% of capacity so attendants will have plenty of room to spread out. The Sharks will team up with The River 97.3 on September 19th for a concert in Dillsburg at Haar’s Drive-In Theatre. The

Jason “Jay” Mizell, known professionally as Jam Master Jay, was a member of 1980s hip-hop sensation Run-DMC. Jay was shot once in the head with a .40-caliber bullet by a masked assailant at his studio in Hollis, the Queens neighborhood where he grew up.

The month of September is Rachel Rocks’ birthday month as she celebrates her birthday on September 2nd.

Rachel came on staff in 2006. “The Mag” was badly in need of someone who actually liked to go out and listen to music and she started to take pictures to follow in Jim Price’s steps of covering bands with photos and words. Prior to Rachel the Harrisburg area was lacking in coverage.

It’s hard to believe that she has been covering the scene for 14 years (longer than Whitey was out on the scene) She just didn’t like sitting around watching TV every night. [without Rachel helping me I would have gone under. She helped set up Quick Books, developed our website and helped establish facebook and twitter and keeps it updated, she has covered thousands of shows, edited photos, wrote her monthly article and many cover stories and has gone to extreme lengths to keep us going plus being a mom, wife and working full time. Thanks Rachel, love Mom, Robin] When I took over the paper I thought I would be all alone as Rachel had planned on retiring. Lucky for all of us she decided to continue covering the live shows. Without her there is no way I could have taken over the paper and kept it running. The first couple of months were super stressful but with the help of ‘The Angel of design’ aka Robin Noll and my little sister Rachel Rocks I was able to carry on the torch. She is always up for an adventure and seeing her Out & About covering live music is always a heart warming experience. We enter the final weeks of a challenging and unusual summer. Mostly all of the popular outdoor concert, festival and fair events I look forward to attending and covering every year were shelved this summer due to COVID-19. But as mentioned in my August article, live music has found ways to at least partially fill the gaps left by the cancellations of those established events.

At least a few communities proceeded with their scheduled public summer concert series, mindful of masks and social distancing protocols. A few new outdoor special events and benefits provided live music opportunities. Bars, wineries, craft breweries and eateries with outdoor spaces continued to provide some live music relief. And some musicians and music fans even grabbed the bull by the horns and created their own outdoor events to enable live music to shine. Enjoy the opportunities for remaining outdoor live music as they happen during the next few weeks, because once colder temperatures arrive, it’s likely that many musical performances will be relegated back to live streams on computer screens for a while.

Altoona’s historic Baker Mansion hosted the first installment of their new Mansion Mania Rockfest event in late July, featuring two bands performing on stage in the Mansion’s front lawn, with proceeds helping out the Mansion’s curators, the Blair County Historical Society. The 2020 edition of longtime Altoona rock favorites Half Tempted took the stage first.

Joining the group’s founder, singer and guitarist Ron Dalansky in the current edition are guitarist and singer Bob DeArmitt, bassist Todd Batzel and drummer Doug Stephens. Half Tempted reliably fired up the socially-distanced audience with two sets of classic-rocking favorites from Free, Grand Funk Railroad, Cheap Trick, Tom Petty, The Clash, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss and lots more. Along the way, the group broke out the Bob Seger double-shot of “Turn the Page” and “Old Time Rock and Roll,” visited 1980s metal and hair-band rock with numbers from Poison, Twisted Sister and Judas Priest, and headed south for rebel rock favorites from Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Georgia Satellites.

As longtime fans know, no Half Tempted show is complete without a healthy dose of AC/DC music; the group did their takes on

Doug Stephens of Half Tempted “You Shook Me All Night Long,” “The Jack” and “Highway to Hell.” Following Half Tempted was a new acoustic-based group, Challenger Deep. Featuring singer Haley Hallinan, and guitarists and singers Max Knott and Brian “Moe” Lasinski, Challenger Deep performed a blend of acoustic classic and modern rock, pop and other favorites. The group’s song range spanned from The Yardbirds’ 1960s classic “For Your Love” to 2020 Grammy winner Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” plus a variety of tunes from Violent Femmes, Better Than Ezra, CCR, Fleetwood Mac, Alanis Morisette, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more.

Haley displayed a strong voice and versatile singing style up front, highlighted by her performance on the Cranberries’ “Zombie,” and the group’s presentation was sturdy and won cheers from the audience.

This event’s debut drew good attendance and was a success; Baker Mansion will stage their second Mansion Mania Rockfest on October 3.

The Professor continued.... on two stages in a laid-back, comfortable and socially-distanced atmosphere. Five bands took the stage; I arrived as the day’s first band, the Rail Gang Rockers, made their debut on the pavilion stage. Randy Karle on lead vocals and harmonica, Don “Turk” Schnars on bass, Will Green on guitar and Bill Hocherl on drums set the music in motion with classic Jerrichah Ickes/ rock favorites from Stevie Ray Urban Myth Vaughan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Idol, Johnny Rivers, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Poison, Bad Company and more. The Rail Gang Rockers gave a solid performance; Randy’s voice and harmonica playing were in good form, Will fired off clean solos, Bill kept the beats busy and steady, and “Turk” – normally a guitar player – handled his bass duties well.

Performing between pavilion stage bands was acoustic duo The Chew on a second stage next to the venue’s indoor facility. Rick and Wayne alternated singing duties throughout the day, doing a variety of favorites from Tom Petty, R.E.M., CSNY, Matchbox 20, John Mellencamp, The Who, Jethro Tull, Collective Soul and

more. They broke out a forgotten 1990s gem I hadn’t heard in ages, Pete Droge’s “If You Don’t Love Me I’ll Kill Myself!” A few guests joined them along the way, including “Turk,” Randy Karle and Pat McConnell on vocals, and during their last intermission set, Urban Myth frontlady Jerrichah Ickes belting out Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” Urban Myth was next on the pavilion stage, doing a variety of upbeat pop and rock favorites. Jerrichah on lead vocals, guitarist (and her husband) Travis Ickes on guitar and backing vocals, Jeff Hahn on drums and the group’s newest member, Tim Aungst on bass, fired up the audience. Jerrichah displayed a potent voice and bright personality up front, and the playful husband-and-wife jabs between her and Travis lent some comic relief into the set. Urban Myth generated the energy, kicking up the tempo on tunes from Lit, Blondie, Billy Squier, Georgia Satellites, Beastie Boys, Blink 182, Pat Benatar, Chuck Berry, Guns N’Roses, 4 Non Blondes, No Doubt and more.

Urban Myth’s set was fun, and prompted the audience to call them back up for a threesong encore. Following them was Reeds Gap area power trio Above The Radar. Lead

Band, Queen, Grand Funk Railroad, Foo Fighters and others. The group triggered some dancing action along the way; some of their highlights included Aaron dedicating “Tennessee Whiskey” to his wife Jena, the group inviting Urban Myth’s Jerrichah back to the stage to sing Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music,” and a feisty rocking read of Rick James’ “Superfreak.” Hats off to Allen for organizing this event, which gave several bands the chance to shake some rust and provided music fans some relief and solace from the craziness of this year and the outside world.

Tyrone’s Reservoir Park has continued their summer Sunday evening concert series, and I got to check out three performances on successive weekends last month. The Altoona Brass Collective – 21 musicians strong - brought a wide array of brass instruments to the stage for two sets. The first set, their classical set, opened with the “Star Spangled Banner,” and followed with performances of Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F,” the hymn “It Is Well with My Soul,” Henry Fillmore’s “The Klaxon March” and the Spanish military march “Pasodoble.” After the intermission, the Collective presented their jazz and pop set, which began with a medley of numbers from “Jesus Christ Superstar.” They then introduced a new number, their brassy take on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” followed by the Glenn Miller-popularized “Tuxedo Junction” and a rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

When the audience politely called for an encore, the Collective returned to finish the day with the “National Emblem March.”

The following Sunday, Tyrone’s own Kip Woodring graced the Reservoir Park audience with his personable and wide-ranging set. Armed with acoustic and electric guitars, Kip sang songs from the rock’n’roll, pop, country, folk and gospel spectrums. Opening with the gospel standard “I’ll Fly Away,” Kip did numbers from Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Boxcar Willie, Bill Haley & the Comets, John Denver, CCR, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, Arlo Guthrie and others. Some highlights included Kip’s renditions of cowboy country songs such as “Mule Train,” “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” and “Angel Flying Too Close to the

Ground,” a version of Santo & Johnny’s “Sleepwalk” performed on his Gretsch guitar, and his show-ending version of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” during which he broke into Chuck’s trademark duckwalk. Kip sang with a smooth and soulful voice, displayed frequent skills on his guitars, and radiated constant joy, enthusiasm and a warm vibe with the audience.

I’ve been following Elaini Arthur’s musical path since her single-digit age years competing in the late Dennie Huber’s “Crazy Fest” Amateur Youth Talent Show. Now a seasoned performer of the festival and fair circuit who records in Nashville, Elaini shared music on stage last month at Reservoir Park.

Strumming her acoustic guitar, Elaini entertained the seated and socially-distanced audience with a mix of country, rock’n’roll, pop favorites and original songs. In the midst of recording a new album, Elaini introduced one of the songs that will be on it, “Every Moment With You,” and she also performed her current single, “Sweet Kisses,” which she wrote and created with several Nashville musicians. Elaini went to the country realm often for songs from Reba McIntyre, Jon Pardi, Patty Loveless, Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Allison Krauss and others. She also visited the Elvis Presley catalog for renditions of “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Burning Love,” and also did versions of Del Shannon’s “Runaway,” the Bette Midler hit “The Rose” and her hearty take on Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About.” After cautioning me early in the show that she had a ukulele nearby, Elaini coaxed me onto the stage to provide uke accompaniment on her rendition of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” (Thanks Elaini!) And Elaini closed out her performance with a robust rendition of Martina McBride’s “Independence Day.” Elaini’s performance was pleasant and easy-going, as she warmly welcomed audience members into her musical world.

The Carrolltown Public Library presented their weekly Wednesday evening “Music in the Park & Basket Auction” events throughout summer at Carrolltown’s Legion Park, with proceeds helping out the library. I checked out Johnstown acoustic duo Gordy Haluska and Bo Moore during one of last month’s events.

Both strumming guitars and alternating singing duties, Gordy and Bo did a wide variety of 1960s and 70s rock’n’roll and pop hits. The Beatles and Eagles were prominent this night, as the pair did Beatles favorites like “All My Loving,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Get Back,” “Blackbird,” and a six-song Fab 4 medley.

From the Eagles the duo performed “Tequila Sunrise,” “Hotel California,” “Take It Easy” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” Gordy and Bo also did numbers from America, James Taylor, Billy Joel,

Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton and others. Along the way, they honored a request for Neil Diamond with “Sweet Caroline” (re-dubbed “Sweet Carrolltown”), and ended the night on a patriotic note with Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” This was a nice commuJohn Shimko / The Boomers nity gathering, as townspeople came out to share a pleasant evening, support live music and their public library.

The Boomers are happy to be back in action following their COVID layoff, and I caught them in action during their late July appearance at the outdoor C2 Trolley House Bar & Grille at Altoona’s Lakemont Park. Bob Helbig on lead vocals and bass, Dave Nichols on guitar and backing vocals, and John Shimko on drums and backing vocals performed a wide variety of rock’n’roll and other hits spanning the 1950s to 1990s. The Boomers’ lively cadence kept the Trolley House dance floor busy as they did favorites from The Kinks, Tom Petty, the Proclaimers, John Cafferty, the Stray Cats, Doobie Brothers, Hollies, Van Morrison, ZZ Top, Del Shannon and many more. The group put together several mash-ups and medleys, merging Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music” with Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” stringing together The Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)” with The Champs’ “Tequila,” CCR’s “Suzie Q” and Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie,” and blending together Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” with Johnny Rivers’ “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu.” The group happily honored requests for songs by the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffett and others, and Dave showcased his guitar skills on Santo & Johnny’s “Sleepwalk.”

With the Altoona Curve dormant this year due to the cancellation of minor league baseball, Altoona’s People’s Natural Gas Field has been presenting weekly “Curve Happy Hour” events; serving up food, beer and live acoustic music. I took in part of Ryan Matthew’s Curve Happy Hour performance in late July.

Some of Ryan’s highlights included his take on Sister Hazel’s “All for You,” Alan Jackson & Jimmy Buffett’s “5 O Clock Somewhere,” Barenaked Ladies’ “If I Had $1,000,000,” and one of Ryan’s own original tunes, “Drinking Song” off his 2008 “Driving Home” CD. Ryan’s voice was in good form, and his performance was pleasant and upbeat, as he shared stories and personal insights on the tunes as he went along. Ryan Matthew’s tunes provided the fun musical soundtrack to put the audience in the mood for the weekend.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way…When the lat-

est restrictions scuttled their late July show at McGarvey’s, the bands Maul and Black Sun decided to move the show to both groups’ basement practice space in Altoona and convert it into an online live-streaming benefit, the “Raise Your Glass to Rich for His Years of Support ‘Telethon,’” with online donations going to McGarvey’s proprietor Rich McGarvey to help his venue. Invited to be part of the basement “studio” audience, I got to witness both bands firsthand. A rising name on the area hard rock scene, Maul opened the show with their hard-hitting original sound, which merges elements of 1990s and 2000s rock with heavy and nu-metal riffs and dynamics. Singer Todd McKeone (doing dou-

ble-duty fronting both bands), guitarists Eric Prindible and Nate Nagle, bassist Tanner Thomas and drummer Dave Applas mixed strong song structures with progressive arrangements, yielding an intriguing style with slight hints of Tool and Chevelle. Maul’s performance was full-throttled and intense, and their instrumental execution tight and powerful. Black Sun introduced a new member this night with the addition of Jae Smith on keys; joining Todd on vocals, Jason Feathers on guitar, David Mollica on bass and Nathanael Woods on drums. Jae adds an extra dimension to Black Sun’s doom-metal fusion hybrid, with his keyboard fills and effects adding depth and more mystique to the group’s presentation.

Black Sun took each of their angular original compositions and pushed them to the brink, ratcheting up the intensity as each number progressed. Todd’s vocal howls became more intense, Jason’s guitar solo displays elevated in ferocity, and the rhythms surged and stormed. This live stream performance successfully raised more than $800 for Rich McGarvey, as both bands and their fan bases showed their support and solidarity.

Another recent live-streaming highlight for me was the opportunity to witness last month’s Sunday afternoon matinee show by youthful jazz trio Teen Town, whose performance at Harrisburg’s Copper Pub & Grill was live-streamed through the Central PA Music Hall Of Fame’s Facebook page. I was first amazed by these young musicians – Conner Rohrer on keys, Gabriel Severn on bass and Logan Bedard on drums – during the 2018 Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, and this day’s performance again had me picking my lower jaw up off the floor! Named after a composition that legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius created while a member of Weather Report, Teen Town laid down some incredible jazz fusion sounds during this performance. All in their teens, these guys dazzled with their instrumental skills, exploring and interacting with each other on their respective instruments, and radiating enthusiasm as they created music together. Improvisation was plentiful as they let the muse carry them, and there were plenty of dazzling solos, clever details and nuances, and all-out musicality on display. As this was an entirely instrumental performance, I didn’t catch any titles of the compositions they did, but did recognize one familiar jazz piece I had heard before. I also liked the roving camera work during this performance, as a singular camera slowly panned back and forth to capture each musician doing his thing, so we could see the facial expressions as well as the details of each player’s performance. It amounted to an uplifting, ear and eye-opening presentation - Teen Town is proof positive that the future of music is in good hands!

I also witnessed live stream performances from Pittsburgh great Norman Nardini and West Virginia bluegrassers Bud’s Collective in recent weeks.

away on August 1 at age 63…And Greg Shiley, owner and operator of popular outdoor concert venue Shiley’s Acres near Martinsburg, West Virginia, died on August 19 from complications after heart surgery. He was 65. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends and colleagues of both men.

ZUPE AND THE POLKA COMMANDOS – NA ZDROWIE! (NOSTROVIA!) (Menthol Bees Records) In this tumultuous and troublesome year that is 2020, perhaps what the world really needs right now is a cheery polka album. Enter longtime western PA-based entertainer Zupe and his Polka Commandos with their new, happy-go-lucky polka album, called Na zdrowie! (Nostrovia!) (“Cheers!” or “Bless You!” in Polish and several eastern European tongues). Uplifting polka-flavored merriment fills this album’s 15 tracks as Zupe celebrates the music, his family and Eastern European heritage, Pennsylvania traditions and more. Zupe sings, plays keys, trumpet, accordion and percussion, and wrote/co-wrote the music on this album with collaborator Mike Popovich, assisted by his ‘Commandos,’ which include popular modern-day polka artist Alex Meix-

ner on accordion and trumpet, drummer Tommy Halla, bassist Christian Fabian, singer and multi-instrumentalist Mollie B, sax player Joe Tierney, guitarist Jimmy Meyer and others. Inspired by family picnics and Zupe’s grandfather, the title track “Na Zdrowie! Polka (Nostrovia)” eagerly gets the album off to its robust start, recalling Polish picnics, food, drink and fun. Giving a nod to one of Johnstown’s popular summer events is “Polkafest Polka,” one of several numbers with a local flavor. Another is the rust belt-inspired “Are You Workin’? Polka with its triple-accordion army of Alex, Zupe and Dan Crosser (of Dan & Galla fame). Two waltzes are part of the fun – the tongue-in-cheek, Klezmer-toned “Pitiful Pierogi,” about a Polish husband’s bewilderment over his Italian wife’s cooking; and the forgiveness-seeking ode “My Heart.” “Polka Vibe” celebrates Polish pride as it rails against Polish jokes and other ridicule. Another food-inspired number, “Halupki Polka,” weaves a tale of a cook wary of her disappearing pigs-in-a-blanket. Two polkas are holiday-themed, as Zupe and his Commandos give a famous whistlepig his own polka with “Punxsutawney Phil Polka,” and they consider the point of view of the reindeer who lost his leading gig to red-nosed Rudolph on “Dasher, the Reindeer.” Zupe and his cohorts celebrate the passing of the polka torch between generations on “Polka Revolution.” The album contains one cover song, an update of Mitch Biskup’s “Strawberries, Raspberries Polka.” As any polka album worth its weight should be, this album is continually upbeat from start to end, and Zupe and his cast radiate happiness and enthusiasm throughout this set. The performances are robust, and listeners will be hard-pressed not to tap their feet along to these songs.

Produced by Zupe and recorded using seven different studios in five states, this album sounds clean, bright and full. Na zdrovia!

(Nostrovia!) is a feisty polka party that will jump from your favorite listening device, bring smiles and laughter from your soul, and could well have you dancing throughout your living space.

has grown a large fan base and achieved some national notoriety. Their latest recording, (But, At What Cost??!) should help that rise to continue. Frontman and guitarist Speed, lead guitarist Codey, bassist Sam and drummer Danno (since replaced by new drummer Boma) have crafted seven sharp-edged and concise slabs of hard-hitting rock that ride the line between classic rock/ metal-geared melody and nu-metal intensity. The rhythms are thunderous and tight, the guitar riffs are prominent and engaging, and Speed sings with purpose and authority. The opening salvo “Dodging Bullets” explodes out of a creeping intro to set the album’s ground rules, with terse verses leading into angry choruses as Speed battles a turmoil of emotions from outside and within. “Feel Inhuman” sternly rumbles with its words of defending one’s humanity against the pressures of a dehumanizing world. In a similar vein, the melody-geared single “World Gone Mad” encourages listeners to stay the course and be the best humans they can be, especially during the current times. The boisterous “Wise Up” cautions listeners to think before they act, while “You’re Fine” deals with overcoming adversity and hard times.

“Black Sunset” displays more of a nu-metal flavor, while the rampaging “Done My Best” sends the album home with the theme of standing tall and surviving the storm. Silvertung’s presentation is sharp and focused, and they bring the crunch, thunder and swagger throughout this set. Speed sings with a tough rawness, yet his words come through clearly. Produced by Steven Wright (whose credits include Slipknot and Mars Volta), this disc sounds tough and abrasive, yet layered and full. (But, At What Cost??!) shows Silvertung firing on all cylinders and executing like a well-oiled rock/metal machine, and displays a confident band with plenty of forward momentum. KING CATFISH – AMERICANCER (no label) First formed as a 1990s rock cover band in 2016, Pittsburgh power trio King Catfish introduces their agitated, 1990s-influenced alternative rock flavor on their debut album, Americancer. Singer and guitarist Jordan Barone, bassist and singer Paul Rice, and drummer Sam Berger churn out agitated grunge and punk-fueled rock over the album’s 11 tracks. Nirvana surfaces as a prominent influence here, from the group’s angular melodies and lean, tight arrange-

ments to Jordan’s vocal blend of Kurt Cobain-like detachment, angst and anger. King Catfish’s words are frequently introspective and cynical; the two-speed album-opener “Weird One” finds Jordan baring his soul; doubts, emotional scars and all.

The album’s title song, “Americancer,” takes inventory of the country’s psyche as it questions materialism, selfishness, and the paranoia and insecurity they have led to. Riding an incendiary, fast-burning arrangement, the album’s first single, “Neptune Street,” explores how a virus has challenged and pushed human anxieties and emotions to the edge, with Jordan riding his angst to its psychotic limit. King Catfish explores some different musical terrain as well, dabbling in a slight surf vibe with “Right Now,” generating a Weezer-like pop-rock flavor with “Waiting,” and crafting a funkier, Red Hot Chili Peppers-like groove on “Push.” continued on next page...

The group includes one cover, taking on Shocking Blue’s “Love Buzz” (a song Nirvana also covered during their early years); and their non-vocal skills take the spotlight on the short instrumental piece “Song of Storms.” King Catfish makes all of it count; their instrumental execution is feisty and inspired, and Jordan packs plenty of passion and personality into his vocal delivery. Recorded, mixed and mastered by John Stoecker, Americancer sounds clear, balanced and full, with King Catfish’s rawness and edginess sounding sharp and abrasive. This is a strong debut; King Catfish delivers a cohesive, cutting edge set on Americancer, and establishes their aggressive, alternative-rocking turf. ON THE BRINK – VISUAL EMPATHY (no label) Altoona-based rock band On The Brink broadens their musical expanse and continues their story-themed brand of original music on their second album, Visual Empathy. Chief songwriter, lead singer and guitarist Edward Brinkel, bassist and co-writer Dana Brinkel, singer and violinist Lisa Wolf, viola player Kirsten Leigh and drummer Nathanael Woods weave together six songs of loss,

emotional suffering and hope.

The songs follow a loose theme of parting ways, the resulting loneliness and the emotions encountered, as On The Brink blends a variety of musical angles. With guest David Villani playing keys, the album gently opens with the first of several Edward and Lisa duets, “Devotion,” and a message that tomorrow is never guaranteed, and

today’s world might never be again. The harder-edged “Longest Day” expresses longing and loneliness, while the title track “Visual Empathy” attempts reasoning and understanding. Written by Edward’s late brother, Kenneth Brinkel (to whose memory the album is devoted), “Send a Picture” embraces past memories while yearning for the return of lost moments. The rowdier “Closer to It” battles impatience for a return to normalcy, while the duet album-closer “Queen of Hearts’ likens life to a card game, where the luck of the draw can mean happiness or heartbreak. On The Brink’s variety of song textures and arrangements keeps this album sounding fresh from start to end, as they span gentler-toned, folk-driven passages to harder rock. The performances are solid; Edward and Lisa complement each other on vocals, and blend for some nice harmonies throughout the album, and Lisa’s and Kirsten’s strings add emotional color and depth to the group’s presentation. Recorded and engineered by David Villani at Altoona’s Data Music Services, Visual Empathy sounds clear, balanced, steady and consistent through its entirety. On The Brink continues to forge their own unique style and sound on Visual Empathy, while offering personal and thoughtful themes with which listeners can identify and relate. BRADEN McDANNELL – EAST & WEST (no label) Originally from western PA but now calling Lewisburg his home base, Braden McDannell has taken his guitar, harmonica and music across the country, and lived on the West Coast for a few years after his college time at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

His experiences from that journey help inform the words on his album East & West. The album’s nine songs are rooted in the classic and modern folk-rock and Americana traditions, with Neil 20

Young and Bob Dylan serving as influences. Braden sings about lessons learned, relationships, life experiences, and even offers observations about current times, while strumming his acoustic guitar and providing harmonica accents along the way. His social commentary kicks off the album on the song “To Live Again,” as he observes how humanity seems to have

gone astray, and encourages society to learn to live again to right the ship. The darker “The Licks I’ve Taken” reflects on life’s hard lessons, while “Honest Lies” addresses someone who is headed on a downward path. Braden addresses relationships on the album, exploring a misunderstanding on “Medicate” and pondering a stalemate of differing personalities on the disc-closing “Night & Day.” Fueled by a catchy whistling riff, Braden decides to step forward with his dreams on “Scene in the Sky,” and that theme of moving forward also drives the uplifting “Light.” Braden sings with personality and clarity, and his guitar and harmonica work are solid. The songs are catchy, and the arrangements simple and direct. Self-recorded, and mixed and mastered at 1 Room Productions in Yakima, Washington; the album sounds clean and balanced, with Braden’s words and instrumentation coming through clearly. East & West is a thoughtful album that introduces listeners to Braden McDannell’s mind and musical world, and presents a satisfying, fulfilling listen. ANTONIO ANDRADE – SOMETHING HAPPENED (no label) Something happened…when, as a 10-year-old living in Centralia, Antonio Andrade saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. It changed his trajectory, from wanting to be a baseball player to becoming a musician. The title of Antonio’s fifth fulllength release, Something Happened shows that his passion for creating and performing songs is still strong after four decades of making music. Singing, playing acoustic guitar and harmonica, Antonio mixes six of his upbeat folk-rocking original songs with five updates of classics and “not-so-classics” – helped along the way by Derek Euston on guitars and bass, Freebo on five-string fretless bass, Ed Lesser on drums and percussion, Mark Stuart on electric guitar, and harmony and backing singer Amma Johnson. Leading off the album, the title track “Something Happened” relates Antonio’s story of that fateful day in 1964, as he references his baseball hero Harmon Killebrew, and the seismic impact of that day, “…bigger than Curly and Larry and Moe/bigger than the image of Marilyn Monroe/bigger than Joe DiMaggio/the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.” He sings of life in hard coal country on “Bended Elbow, Bended Knee,” weighing the options for tranquility and salvation between a church and a bar. A woman resembling Larry Fine (of the 3 Stooges) touches his heart on the playful “She’s My Love,” a special equine triggers pleasant memories on “Unforgettable,” and Antonio shares anger management tips on the lighthearted “When I’m Angry.” He also presents spirited interpretations of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River,” Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” Warren Zevon’s “Hasten Down the Wind,” David Crosby’s “Carry Me,” and “Makes Me Happy,” a Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

song by Stacey Earle (sister of Steve Earle). This is a warm album; Antonio’s expressive voice conveys his happy personality and enthusiasm for performing, and his helping cast of musicians nicely fleshes out the songs. Produced by Antonio and recorded at The Green Room in Harrisburg, this album sounds clean, balanced and full, with Antonio’s voice and personality solidly at the front and center. Hearing this album should make listeners glad that Something Happened to Antonio Andrade’s life in 1964; this set offers a pleasant and personable listening experience as Antonio shares his life and inspirations. THE HOOK – MOONSHINE & HONEY (no label) Formed in 2014, Lehigh Valley-based foursome The Hook offers a freewheeling, multi-flavored brand of upbeat alternative rock on their debut CD, Moonshine & Honey. Over the course of the album’s 15 tracks, singer and guitarist Carlos Barata, drummer and singer Chris Kondravy, bassist Youssef Moussa and keyboardist Joe DiMarco blend elements of rock, funk, reggae, soul, blues, retro and roots music into a fresh, vibrant, musical stew that defies categorization. Their melodies are often catchy, their grooves punchy and ever-moving, and The Hook’s overall vibe is uplifting and bright. The opening track “Precipitate” sets the album’s tone with its churning, busy arrangement and rhythms, and its eager words about em-

bracing life and not staying still. The funky and lively “Live It Up” champions being happy in your own skin and living for the moment. The title song, “Moonshine & Honey,” slowly builds to a full-blown zenith while offering philosophy about the rollercoaster ride called life. Other highlights include the funky, high-getting bliss of “Blunt,” the indie-rocking, independent spirit of “Get My Own” and “Be Like Johnny,” the jumpy and B-52slike “Go Getter,” the chill-out reggae of “Good Feels,” the hard and blues-rocking “Take Control,” the 1960s-infused pop-rock of “Brand New,” and the more ambient and sullen album-closer “Far at All.” The Hook sounds strong through all of the tracks; Carlos delivers a smooth and consistent voice up front, often supported with layered harmonies. These guys can play their instruments, and keep the songs interesting with busy interaction, fills and layers. Produced by Duckhead Records in Bethlehem, this album sounds broad and deep, with all components of The Hook’s musical recipe coming through clearly and blending smoothly into a captivating veneer.
