ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
Last month when I wrote my article I had decided that I was going to try to sell the PA Musician Magazine for $20,000 and be done with it. What an out pouring of support and love we received this past month. I honestly thought that no one really cared if we continued on or not. It seems that people do care. We had a few offers for doing Kickstarter campaigns and one offer that they wanted us to finance it but no cash in hand with someone who had experience and could just take it over. Then our son Joshua, who has been building houses for the past 20 years, decided that he wanted to change occupations and likes the idea of being self-employed and working like a dog for himself rather than someone else. (He thinks he’s going to have weekends off (ha, ha, ha) but maybe… he is a worker.) So Joshua Noll is the new CEO, publisher, editor, etc of the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. This issue will be the last issue that I am in charge of. I was truly overwhelmed with all of you who placed ads wishing Rachel Rocks and myself well in our retirement but Josh will still need Rachel’s help and of course I will have to teach him all I know. He wants to keep everything the same for the first few months and then make some changes. He is going to sell the cover again, so that should prove interesting. Josh wants to keep his Dad’s legacy going and just didn’t want to see the magazine cease to be. It is amazing how our children grew up with the PA Musician Magazine. Rachel was 4 and Josh would have been 7. I remember one time I had been working 2 days straight and as soon as Whitey was out the door heading to the printer I fell sound asleep. Rachel was 5. I woke up and couldn’t find her anywhere I called the neighbor and she was over there visiting. Mrs. Schoppe, was an older retired woman, and here when Rachel couldn’t wake me she headed over there and told her I was sleeping. That started a precious relationship that meant a lot to both of them and was a blessing for me. She wasn’t

Robin, Whitey & Chris working on the first issue allowed to go over until 11am so everyday she would watch the clock and as soon as it was 11 out the door she went. Yes our kids have answered phones, stuffed envelopes and as soon as they had their driver’s license they started delivering papers. They also all had jobs as well as soon as they were 16. Yes there are many many stories of interesting times over the 36 year time period. Whitey was 41 when he decided to start the paper and I find it interesting that Josh is 42. Mike Staub, (Sarah Staub of Greenbelt Events father) was a good family friend and had hired Whitey at one time and they would brain storm various ideas. Whitey gave him an idea one day that doubled his income (Mike published “The Apartment Guide” and had rental offices) He told Whitey he needed to publish his own paper. Whitey was like, right I don’t have any money. We were both working minimum paying jobs ( I had two jobs) and his mom lived with us at the time and watched the kids. Mike preceded to instruct him how it was done. Whitey went to the State Library and did some research and came across a book that was titled, “The Haves and the Have Nots”. We were on welfare at the time and were definitely in the “Have Not” category. The next step was deciding what kind of paper to do. There were plenty of real estate publications and there were Fish Finders, Auto Locators and the only classified section in the pa-
Josh Noll (new owner) & Rachel Rocks
per that didn’t have any publications was Musical equipment. He was at the news stand looking at publications and picked up “The Musician” as he was a musician (not a working one at the time) but still played guitar and sang and that’s when he had the idea of starting The Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. It would be like the Fish Finder only it would be about finding musicians and musicians finding clubs and music stores. Thus in the summer of 1982 the idea was born. Next we had to get a logo designed, that was $300. Whitey had to compile phone numbers and list of musicians, music stores and had to find key people in the music industry that would be vital to have them involved to make it a success. One of those key people was John Harris. John thought it was a great idea but thought we were biting off more than we could chew by doing the whole state but John was managing Kix, The Sharks and the Metron at the time and placed paying ads for all three. Six was on our first cover. He approached other agencies as well. One main music store he wanted in was Fred’s in Reading (everyone went to Fred’s) His mother let us use her gas credit card and a lot of times he would only have $5 in his pocket but he kept pressing on. I had to quit my jobs because he wanted me home to answer the phone and every Saturday I had to call all the bands and pitch them for ads. It was nerve wracking. Our first phone bill was over $300 and I said that’s it, we can’t afford it but he said yes we can. When I was discouraged he was up and when he was discouraged I was up. It’s how it’s always been. In November of 1982 we came out with our first issue. When we went to the Welfare Office and told them we wanted to start on our own business and the income would be irregular what should we do because back then you had to send in copies of all your pay stubs. She said, I don’t know what to do. Most people stay on welfare from generation to generation, they don’t usually come off. She said she would give us full benefits for 6 months but then after that we were on our own. We only had one option and that was to make it work and here we are 36 years later still working and I’m still rushing to get to the printer on time…Joshua says he won’t miss his deadlines…hmmm, we’ll see. THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU WHO FAITHFULLY READ US EACH MONTH. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPS US DELIVER THE PAPERS, WHO WRITES FOR US, WHO SUPPORTS ARE FAITHFUL ADVERTISERS WHO BLESS US EACH MONTH BY RUNNING ADS WITH US. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Hopefully you will continue to work with Joshua Noll so that the Pennsylvania music industry has a paper that gives every musician who wants to use it an extended way to let the public know who and what and where the music is happening. Keep the music flowing and may God Bless You and Keep You and Prosper you in good health and financially. LOTS OF LOVE TO ONE & ALL!!!! Love Robin & Whitey Noll

Rachel, we are IN. I know we haven’t been part of the magazine for a couple months now, but you guys have done so much for us. Me personally, I would like to say thank you for all you did to try to help Latimore Sky get up and running. You are an amazing person. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. If the people had a tenth of the spirit and heart you have, it would be an amazing world. —PJ
Thank you PA Musician Magazine, you will be missed! www.facebook.com/Latimore Sky May, 2018
I am grateful for all the years of service the Pennsylvania Musician magazine has provided to our live music community. One of the most treasured blessings I have is the friendship of Rachel Rocks. She came out to see the band my wife was in back in 2011, TAKE 147. We became instant friends being fellow Perry County girls! We quickly learned we had so much in common that it was bizarre that it took this long for us to meet. We were even backyard neighbors for a short time back in 2000, but never met! It also was an honor to have two of my photographs be used on the cover of the magazine and several times in Rachel’s column. When the “Fight for our Forum” fundraiser for the magazine was organized in August of 2012, I was honored to be part of putting the raffle baskets together to raise vital funds to keep the magazine going. Here we are six years later, saying good bye. My heartfelt gratitude and appreciation goes out to all of the PA Musician family and staff for all you have done for the love of music! OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
Happy Retirement Mom and Dad!! What a ROLLER COASTER of a month!!!!! I called Mom right after she sent the mag to the printer last month and she said, “I did it, I announced the end of the magazine..” I’ve been trying to convince her to retire for YEARS, so I was completely shocked that she finally did it. It was a whirlwind of contemplating what should we do now. We had a couple people interested in buying it, two guys were getting pretty serious, and then Josh Noll, my big brother, started talking to Mom saying he wanted to have a stab at it… WHAT?!? My mind was blown! I had a few weeks to accept that it was the end, no more articles, no more interviews, no more “Rachel Rocks”… I think I finally accepted my fate, when Josh made his decision. Obviously, I can’t leave my brother and make him forge the world of music on his own, so alas, Rachel Rocks will continue to rock…. Thank you so much to EVERYONE who commented, loved, liked, and cried along with me with all of my crazy Facebook posts this month. Mom and I were continually saying to each other, I really didn’t think anyone cared… As with any business you always get told negative things about what you’ve done wrong, said wrong, looked wrong, etc… But you rarely get praise, or ‘atta girls’ and let me tell you, the littlest compliment can go a long way.. So do me a favor when you see me Out and About, say Hi and let me know that you read my article, then maybe I’ll feel like I should continue typing my fingers off and caffeinating late into the night…. And better yet… ADVERTISE!!!! I can tell you now that my brother won’t keep this magazine going unless he makes enough money to live. He’s not going in debt like Mom and I have for years. It’s not cheap going Out and About, let alone creating a magazine, printing it, delivering it, etc. Yeah sure we could go exclusively digital, but even that costs HUGE bucks to have a decent/interactive website with constant changes and updates.. Stuff doesn’t create itself, websites aren’t free, especially complex business ones. We all know that Facebook limits what you’re allowed to share, who you’re allowed to invite, who sees your posts, etc.. If you want to make sure everyone who is interested in supporting the local music scene sees your ad, then ADVERTISE!!! Promote your band or business! USE IT.. Or I promise, you REALLY will LOSE IT! I am so happy for Mom and Dad. This magazine has meant so much to so many people. I know it wasn’t easy, but it was their dream, and they definitely outlived their expectations. I know Dad especially never thought it would last THIS long. Dad thought maybe it could help provide enough money for Christmas for all four of us kids, and it wound up providing so much more for so many years. Looking back it’s hard to believe all this magazine has seen our family through. Dad and Mom have definitely built up a legacy, and I am truly glad that Josh is giving it a whirl. I’m sure you’ll still see Mom and Dad around, and for that I am truly grateful. Thanks to everyone who donated for my super special secret ad to allow me to give Mom and Dad some extra surprise money, again I can’t say enough how much all of your kind words and encouragement have meant to all of us. Thanks also to 105.7 the X and the People’s Morning Show, Jen and Nipsy, for giving me some air time to say goodbye to Whitey and Robin’s legacy, and I was also able to let the listeners know first, that Josh was taking it over. It was a great opportunity and a great way to break the news! The magazine started when I was just 3 years old. I of course never really liked, or appreciated the magazine for probably over half of my life. I saw all of the hard work and hours Mom and Dad would work on the magazine, yes it did allow her to take off whenever I had a game, or one of us kids needed her for anything, that’s one thing self-employment is good for. As I started yet another new job this week, (I finally got a job at the Commonwealth), I realized once again how much having a business in our house my whole life made me into the employee I am today. I saw Mom do it all: answer the phones, pay the bills, design the ads, call the clients, deliver the mags, do the invoices, etc. etc.. Because of her amazing example I am an all-in hands on girl with any job I’ve ever had, and I’m sure I have Mom and the magazine to thank for that. I’ve always, since I was 6 years old been “professional” at answering the phones. The only way we were allowed to pick it up was if we could say, “The continued on page 12....

I would like to thank Robin and Whitey Noll and their staff throughout the decades for making a medium that has brought so many people together in our community through the music industry and all it’s avenues. Thank you for all the memories and friendships you helped create. I wish you well in your future endeavors. who’s ears I blew out, I apologize, but I was just trying to talk to my friends before the day of Caller ID and cell phones. The magazine and all of my new friends were here for me when I needed it the most. I had a terrible bout of Post-Partum Depression after my 2nd baby, Mason, was born. Mom and my husband Kris knew I needed help. Mom came up with the plan that she could really use someone to cover the music scene around Harrisburg, and Rachel Rocks was born. Getting out of the house and interacting with adults is just what I needed. It really helped reign me in to being a stable stay at home Mom. With my boys at 12 and 15 now, and me working a full-time job out of the house, I feel like my only time to be with my family is on the weekends, we get so busy doing things, that by the time the bands start I’m usually sacked out on the couch, or we’re just still out being us… a family. So I am still going to be Rachel Rocks as much as I can, and I’ll help Josh as much as possible, but my moto has always been Family First. Thanks for continuing to read my ramblings and thanks for all of your support and friendship. I can’t wait to see the legacy continue, Josh will undoubtedly change some things, but ultimately we’ll still be out there supporting those that support us, the musicians! Now, I can finally get to exactly that, the music! It all started many moons ago at Bravo 11 for Adrian Blitzer. It was awesome to not only see and hear Adrian Blitzer, but also to be able to see so many of my old Tubby’s friends. A continued on page 14....

OUT & ABOUT continued little birdie told me that Tubby’s is still pushing hard to come back, hopefully by September, just in time for my 40th Birthday celebration! WhooHOO!! Anyway, back to Adrian Blitzer.. I was surprised to hear them play some more party rock songs and not going completely hard rock, but I guess that just proves on how versatile they can be for their crowd. It’s awesome to hear a band play songs that aren’t the “normal” songs every other band plays, and even if they do play a common cover song, they throw enough of their own twist on it to help give it some extra grit. Andy is an amazing frontman, and I always enjoy watching him perform. Ever since the MMC it’s great to see Bravo 11 growing in popularity. It’s definitely the place to be on the West Shore for live music, that’s for sure!
Andy of Adrian Blitzer
The next night I headed back to Bravo 11 for The Famous. I went with a group of friends and again the place was packed. Chad Kintz has been doing amazing things for Bravo 11, you can always guarantee the bands at Bravo 11 are going to be top notch, and the bar tenders are hustling to keep everyone happy. It’s nice now with the nicer weather they can open up the deck doors and people can listen to the music from the deck. Their deck is massive and at least doubles the amount of people that Bravo 11 can hold. Now back to the band, it’s always so awesome hearing so many talented musicians on one stage, and talk about a band that plays some “different” songs than any other band in the area, The Famous is all over the place, with all of their different vocalists in the band they blow you away with their versatility. Even though Joey sings a lot of the lead vocals, Shelby sings her fair share too, and the way she can cover crazy songs like “Heartbreaker” from Pat Benatar and “The Chain” by Stevie Nicks is even crazier because even tho she’s the lead on it, the harmonies with everyone singing in the band is just intense! Of course Joey sings Journey which everyone knows I love, and so many other super cool songs that are big hits with everyone in the crowd. If you haven’t gotten out to see The Famous yet, you should do yourself a favor and get out there and ‘Be Famous’. SIDE NOTE: Since writing this article, I found out the new name for Bravo 11 is now, Park Inn Deck Stage. Again, the place should be called Used to Bes. They also have a new bar and food manager, so I’m sure once again there will be some changes, but hopefully the music will continue. Check out their ad in this issue for all of the details and for the full schedule of bands coming to the Park Inn this month. The following weekend I headed to Chick’s in Hummelstown for Yak Bone. Their guitar player, Sandi, also has an acoustic duo she plays with, called SXRCHXX, with her friend Rachel. They opened up the night and got everyone singing along early. You know if a band can get people singing along before 11pm they must be doing something right, because it’s hard to get anyone to sing along til after midnight, or at least until after they’ve had a few more drinks! When I got there I was thrilled to see so many familiar faces out supporting Yak Bone’s first official show. At first you could tell Yak Bone was a little nervous, but it didn’t take them long to just let loose and have a good time. They were giving out free stickers to dancers and there was some interesting placement of those stickers happening right there on the dance floor… It was quite interesting to say the least. It was awesome seeing Patty and Rochelle on the stage again, and Sandi was just the added bonus! Yak Bone is playing so many of your favorite dance and sing-a-long songs. Everyone was having a blast and enjoying the music. I can’t wait to see more of Yak Bone very soon! Keep an eye on their schedule in future issues of the PA Musician Magazine.

Saturday night was definitely a busy night Out and About. The night started with Sweet Corn and Peanut at Blue Moose, opening for Six Bar Break. I heard Sweet Corn and Peanut before at the Blue Moose open mic, and I was impressed then, but even hearing them and watching them sing even more songs, I was blown away. Mostly all of their music is their own originals, the covers they do play sound nothing like the originals, but they will shock and awe you! Their voices are both awesome enough, but I also love all of the lyrics to their songs, I could really connect with their songs which helps you really get sucked into their show and every word of every song. I’m glad they opened up for Six Bar Break and I could see them again. Next up were the headliners of the night, Six Bar Break. It’s been way too long since I saw these guys! It seems like every time they have a gig in this area I’m busy running around somewhere else, but I’m so glad our lives finally connected again. Six Bar Break Ben, Dave and RT are not only great musicians, but overall club. It will be an awesome place for National Acts to make a some of the nicest guys in the planet. I love hanging out with pitt stop in Harrisburg. them and listening to their music. Ben has one of those voices My next adventure was a super special brewery tour with my that would be perfect in radio, not only does he sound great just friends Joanie and Terri. I was between jobs. I recently got a talking, but he really blows me away every time he sings. I love state job, I am now officially a Commonwealth of PA employee, the style of their original music too. It’s a great mixture between so to celebrate my new position we went on an adventure. Our rock and blues with lots of roots! It’s definitely XL.. or maybe GINORgreat little side trip. It’s only maybe a mile off of 322, and right MOUS.. There were probably a couple hundred people there, along 522 if you take the back roads to State College. Not only but the place hardly looked busy. It’s absolutely gorgeous intedid all of the breweries have fabulous beer, but almost all of rior. The patio is amazing.. I’m so glad they didn’t chop down them also host live music. Breweries and wineries are popping that XL tree.. The people watching is amazing too! It’s like it’s up all over the place, and it’s great to hear that on most occasions own little world... It has a great VIP area balcony a little food/ that means new venues are popping up too! It was a great drive snack area, and the main bar is inside, but it also has a great bar through the countryside. Thanks Joanie and Terri for an amazing on the patio too for busy, warm nights. Smooth Like Clyde was adventure! It was a great day with even greater friends!! on the stage when we got there and they had a nice crowd on the The next weekend started out on the calmer side. I was dropdance floor, moving and grooving to the music. I really hope the ping off equipment at my Youth Sports Photo office in MiddleHarrisburg area gets out there and supports this club. I decided to Gratitude: A Tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire on May 5th, Back pop in and of course I was highly entertained with all of Mike’s in Black on May 12th with Time Bomb opening for them, and antics. All of the artists did a great job and I was once again impressed with how quickly the bands changed over and the show kept moving. Bob 94.9 does a great job every year at bringing in artists that are just on the cusp of making it big in the country music industry, I will be watching to see what happens with all of these artists and their musical careers. My
personal favorite of the night was Drew Baldridge, he had a great stage presence, and I could actually hear all of the words he was singing. Steel… Coming at you Hard & Heavy By Rachel Rocks Cover photo by Meredith Kaminek
Chris Redding Steel is a hard-rockin’/metal band from the Mechanicsburg area. If you’ve ever picked up a PA Musician magazine in the last 23 plus years, chances are you’ve seen their ad and are familiar with their name and have seen them live and read about them in our pages and seen their pics quite often in our Hot Shot, Shot Hot pages. Steel officially started to call themselves Steel back in 1995, as they were naming the many bands prior to Steel that they were in we recognized that many of them had advertised in our pages over the years and even some of them had been on our cover. The Steel line-up has been the same since 2000 when Trevis Becker came thundering into the band with his huge drum kit. There aren’t too many bands that can say they’ve had the same exact line-up for 18 years. Chris Redding is behind the mic with his amazing voice, Dave Magaro is laying down the bass lines, and Aaron Zimmerman is ripping away on the guitar. Chris can hold his own behind the mic, but it is nice to hear when Aaron and Dave add in their harmonies and backing vocals.
When we asked what their secret is to staying together so long, I think Dave gave the best advice, “Don’t be IN A band.. Be a band!” And that’s exactly what they are. Not only are they a band of musicians that get together and play some great music, they are also a band of brothers. On or off the stage these guys are together, supporting each other, and listening to each other’s needs and yes life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, there are frustrations too, but you have to be adults and work through it and not just get mad and quit. Their other secret is that all the money the band makes goes right back into the band. They treat their band like a business. It helps that 3 out of the 4 are self-employed so they understand what it takes to run a business. Hence the reason why they have the funds to advertise, buy the gear they need, etc. They also know they only thing they are trying to accomplish is to have fun! They aren’t out there trying to find the last golden ticket, that ship sailed a long time ago, they are happy playing out there 2-3 times per month, just having a good time and having a party with whomever shows up. Since we thought this was going to be the last issue when I did this interview, I decided to take some time to walk down memory lane with the guys. We’ll start with Aaron since he was the first one playing in Savage Bliss. Aaron originally started playing when he was 9 years
Savage Bliss old with a cheap-o acoustic guitar. He played in lots of “almost bands”.. or “true garage bands” but it took him until 1989 to get together with Jim Fagan, Jay Acri, and Ed Gobat and form Savage Bliss to be in a “real” band. Aaron also had a side project, Sole Grind, they were more of an acoustic band that played modern rock and covered bands like Weezer! Needless to say, that project didn’t last long, and changes were happening in the Savage Bliss line-up, so Aaron started looking for band members. Aaron knew Dave from the band circuit and quickly called him to get him to come play bass.

Dave started playing back when he was 16 years old and has always been very creative, he was able to use a headphone cord tapped into an 8 track to be able to play his bass and he got hooked! When he was around 18 a woman at the time said it was either her or the band,
Dave Magaro
and he couldn’t say “See ya honey!” fast enough. Music is in his blood. Before he was completely committed to Steel he was still playing with his old band, KareTaker, once again another advertiser. Maybe Dave is the secret to longevity, he played with KareTaker from 1980-2000. In 1995 after he was playing in Savage Bliss for a while, Aaron, Chris, and Dave decided it was time for a fresh start, so they had to come up with a name, Dave being the writer of the band, suggested the name Steel. Steel is hard, heavy, metal, and that’s exactly how they wanted to play hard and heavy. Dave also penned all their original songs on “Hammered” and continues to write new songs . Chris grew up with 10 brothers and sisters so one thing he learned early in life is you always do what Mom says. Mom wanted him to be in the choir in grade school, and that’s how his passion for singing began. He’s been in plenty of different bands, but his first big band was Falcon, back in 1977. He has always truly appreciated the PA Musician Magazine since the very first issue. He was a musician, just like Dad trying to get the word out there about his shows and his music, but there was no way to do it until this awesome family, The Nolls, started this magazine, back in 1982. After the PA Musician started you could see what other bands were doing, that there WERE other bands and where they were playing. It helped get people to spread out and get to know each other. Chris went on to play in Magnum, another advertising band, that played in a lot of shows. He was also in Night Flight where they actually had a trampoline behind the drummer so he could launch himself on to the stage! Scary Mary, another advertising band, and then Savage Bliss, which then became Steel. Needless to say he’s been playing music for a while, but one thing he always swears by is advertising and promoting your shows. A lot of people in this area’s music scene have become just as close if not closer than family and Chris says the magazine has a lot to do with it.

(Aaron has advertised Sonic Productions since he first began!) It makes it so easy to perform when you know you can count on the man behind the board. The guys are very grateful for all of the hard work and time Scott has spent making them sound as good as they can get! Scott is grateful for all of the friendships he’s made over the years, but he’s extremely grateful that they’ve changed the sound board over to all digital, even a digital snake! It makes life so much easier.
Trevis Becker Trevis has been playing music since his Mom got him drums lessons in Kindergarten, but she said at one point no practice-no lessons, it took him until 4th grade to convince his Mom to let him try again, and he’s been practicing ever since. He was in his first gigging band at 14, they played parties and carnivals and anywhere they could find people who would listen. His first big band was Sabotage, they actually got to open for White Lion, some other bands he was in were Second Wind, Carousel Begins, Ashley Krump, Eclipse, then Steel. Trevis one day got a call from Chris asking him to come audition in his band, Steel. They hadn’t seen each other for over 15 years, but Trevis said, “if you’re singing.. Sure!” Then Chris told him he would have to play Rush’s ‘2112’. Trevis learned how to play Rush’s ‘2112’ overnight, and it’s a 20 minute, difficult song to play. He actually broke his snare playing so hard at his audition. After they were done playing ‘2112’ together they all loved what they heard and how they felt after they were done. Chris, Aaron and Dave said they would discuss it, then right there in front of him they talked about five seconds until they all said, “YES!” Trevis was just what they were looking for, and it’s been a perfect fit ever since.
The guys also know that some of the people just come out to the shows to dance with the ladies of the band, and they don’t see anything wrong with that! One thing I’ve learned since my very first show at Angie’s 12 years ago, is that it doesn’t matter who you are, when you are at a Steel show, you are family. I was instantly welcomed into the crowd, and I’ve had a blast at every show ever since! When I was first going “Out and About”, Mom suggested I go see Steel because she knew they would watch out for me, and I’m so glad she did! The wives of Steel support the band 100% and married their men loving their music and accepting the
fact that music would be an equation in their lives that they had to embrace. I didn’t get a chance to say much about the band themselves, but I can tell you that if you like metal hair bands, you definitely want to check these guys out! Some people still refer to them as an Iron Maiden Tribute band, and they do play Iron Maiden spot on, but they also play so much more, some of my favorites are Uriah Heep, and of course Steel’s originals. They do have a CD, “Hammered” as mentioned before, with some excellent songs on it. They try and mix in about three original songs in every set. I know I personally love their CD. You can check out Steel’s schedule in this issue to get all of the details of their upcoming shows so you can get out there and experience a “Live Steel Event” for yourself and become part of the Steel family. You can look up their website too for even more information, www. steelrocks.com. If you would like to get them scheduled for your special event or club you can give them a call at 717-938-0611.
The other 5th, silent member of the band, is the guy behind the board, Scott Sprankle. He’s been doing sound for Steel and working with Aaron and his sound & lighting company, Sonic Productions, since at least 1997.

NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman
Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! As you may know, there will be changes regarding the helm of PA Musician. Owners, Whitey and Robin Noll have decided to retire after 36 incredible years in the Central PA music scene. Their son, Josh, is taking over full duties as owner, editor and publisher. In today’s world, media publications have struggled to survive with readers drifting towards the internet. We truly appreciate YOU our readers, Your over-whelming response of losing “the Mag” is one of the reasons that Josh Noll decided to carry on the legacy. Music magazines have been lost locally (Fly, Origivation, Shinbone, Unsung Hero, Go) and nationally (Vibe, Blender, Spin). Amazingly, the PA Musician’s history has outlasted all of them and will continue to be a staple in the Pennsylvania music landscape. A massive Thank-You to Robin and Whitey, for all the years publishing and giving me the opportunity to contribute. The Martinis (former Martini Bros) returned to the scene last month with a show at American Bar & Grill in Lancaster. The
The Martinis
three-piece band took a break after the departure of founding bass player, Mike Mead. Martini Bros originated in 1994 and had only one other line-up change with the loss of drummer Chad Matson. The band has remained consistent and relevant in Central PA with current members Deuce Gibb, Rej Troup and Brian Cartwright. Martinis next show takes place May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) at Johnny Joe’s in Mechanicsburg. Big news of Harrisburg last month was the grand opening of Club XL – a premier nightclub with a capacity of 1400. The new venue opened on April 13 with DJs, the following night included Honeypump and Smooth Like Clyde and the inaugural weekend ended with National act Puddle Of Mudd, Saving Abel, Tantric, Inherit The Earth, and Small Town Titans. The venue will continue to bring National artists including KIX (June 16), Jerrod Neimann (May 25), Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown (May 24), O-Town, Aaron Carter & Ryan Cabrera (June 29) and tribute bands to Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC (May 12), Earth Wind & Fire (May 5), and Pink Floyd (May 19). Local original band The Twindows rocked The Underground Bike Shop in Harrisburg on April 17. A fairly new venue in Midtown on Third Street that supports original bands. The Twindows have acquired a new bass player and as a group their stage presence gets better with each performance. The band recently released their debut cd “Valkyrie 2.0” and return to the Bike Shop on May 25 and June 30. Punk band Brom Bones of Lancaster played the Brickyard bar on April 18. It had been a couple months since their last show and the band put on a great performance consisting of three sets. Brom Bones released an album a year ago titled “Get down, Stay down,” and they continue to record with the possibility of the next release a double-record on vinyl. The same night, Dirt Cheap played in their hometown of York at Fat Daddy’s. The hard rock band base themselves on the Bon Scott era of AC/DC and have recently recruited new drummer, Ryan Bencak. Dirt Cheap put on an amazing show that exposes the great sound and stage at Fat Daddy’s. The highlight of last month involved the recent L7 “I Came

Back To Bitch” tour covering 10 cities across America. After shows in New Jersey, Boston, New York City .. L7 visited the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia on April 13. The Los Angeles rock band held popularity in the 80s and 90s as part of the grunge movement and toured with such bands as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Faith No More, Marilyn Manson. L7 are in the process of recording their first new album in 18 years and have released two new songs on 7” vinyl. I was beyond fortunate to meet with the band backstage after the show and talk music and the current state of L7. Truly one of my all-time favorite rock bands. NATIONAL NEWS: Huey Lewis And The News have canceled all scheduled 2018 dates due to Lewis’ hearing problems. The band’s website includes a lengthy statement apologizing. In brief …“Two and a half months ago, I lost most of my hearing. Although I can still hear a little, I can’t hear music well enough to sing. The doctors believe I have Meniere’s disease and have agreed that I can’t perform until I improve. I feel horrible about cancelling shows. I hope that one day soon I’ll be able to perform again. Sincerely, Huey” Lindsey Buckingham has reportedly departed from Fleetwood Mac. The band is about to tour and will take Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and Crowded House frontman Neil Finn in place of Buckingham. “We are thrilled to welcome the musical talents of the caliber of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn into the Mac family. With Mike and Neil, we’ll be performing all the hits that the fans love, plus we’ll be surprising our audiences with some tracks from our historic catalogue of songs,” Fleetwood Mac stated. The band added, “Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour. The band wishes Lindsey all the best” Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974, following the departure of Bob Welch. The guitarist was first featured on the band’s self-titled 1975 album. The Outlaw Music Festival has added a second leg, adding Van Morrison and Tedeschi Trucks, to its summer tour. The first leg begins May 25 featuring Willie Nelson & Family, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Alison Krauss, Sturgill Simpson and Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. The second leg features Willie Nelson & Family, Van Morrison, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Sturgill Simpson, Lukas Nelson + Promise Of The Real and Particle Kid. The Outlaw Music Festival visits Hersheypark
Stadium this year on Sept 8. The Outlaw’s last visit to Hershey sold 20,387 tickets and grossed $1,091,770. Kurt Vile has announced his first North America shows with The Violators in over a year. The former War On Drugs member has remained busy working with such artists as John Prine, Cyndi Lauper, Courtney Barnett, John Cale and Kim Gordon. Vile’s upcoming tour takes place in June & July, with a visit to Lancaster’s Tellus 360 on June 14. Connections appears with Vile And The Violators through June 16 and Dylan Carlson handles support duties July 10-17. Sinead O’Connor booked her first live shows since changing her name and entering a treatment center for mental health issues. The Irish singer changed her name to Magda Davitt to be “free of parental curses,” saying that “Sinead O’Connor is gone. That person is gone.” The performances took place April 24 in Portsmouth, N.H, and April 25 in Northampton, Mass. The singer is also slated for a tour this summer. Except for an appearance at Shane MacGowen’s 60th Birthday concert in January, O’Connor has not played a live show since 2015. DMX was sentenced to one year in prison in a New York court March 28 for evading $1.7 million in taxes. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff accommodated DMX’s desire to listen to his autobiographical song “Slippin” in court before he sentenced the rapper. The judge called DMX’s crimes “brazen and blatant,” but gave him a sentence below the five year maximum that prosecutors sought, calling him a “good man.” The Ruff Ryders rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, pled guilty to tax fraud in November 2017. He spent six years evading taxes. The rapper has been behind bars since January. UPCOMING SHOWS: Steve Forbert Mifflinburg Rusty Rail May 4. Martinis Mechanicsburg Johnny Joes May 5. landing on the stage that would have earned him a gold medal in Olympic gymnastics! Capping the night was rap artist Waka Flocka (Flame) with his group, who instantly had the entire student audience excitedly in front of the stage. Waka and his crew delivered visceral, pulsing beats and rhymes that often had the crowd chanting and grooving along. I didn’t know much of his song library, but some of Waka’s numbers this night included “Trap My Ass Off,” “Big Dawg” and “No Hands,” and he also briefly referenced DJ Snake/Lil’ John’s “Turn Down for What.” Crowd enthusiasm hit a feverish pitch several times, with the show interrupted briefly as audience members were instructed not to climb up on speakers and sound gear. Positioned before the last week of classes and finals week, Ivyside Off the Rails provided a needed stress reliever for students (and at least this faculty member) alike. Indoors, the current edition of British Invasion-era legends The Zombies performed in late March before a sold-out house at State College’s historic State Theatre. Opening the night was New England native and indie folk artist Don DiLego. Don performed a short selection of original songs, with touches of humor thrown in between. He playfully acknowledged his role as
THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price
For much of last month, I thought I would be opening this writ with a farewell to these pages, as my editor, Robin Noll, announced the pending final chapter of Pennsylvania Musician Magazine, and that this month’s issue would be the swan song. However, thanks to Robin and Whitey Noll’s son, Josh Noll, stepping up to take the reins, PA Musician continues on, and so does this column! Thanks Josh for continuing this magazine and its legacy! And thanks to Robin and Whitey for their 36-plus years of building that legacy! In the days that followed Robin’s initial announcement, many musicians, readers and fans approached me to show appreciation and share memories of their own experiences with PA Musician. Memories varied from musicians recalling their first-ever write-up or “Hot Shots” on these pages, to appreciation over remembrances to fallen area musicians, to the general appreciation that PA Musician has always been here as a central hub and database where readers can learn about the state’s music scene; its musicians, bands, venues, shows and news. On behalf of Robin, Whitey and my fellow writers and staff, thanks to everybody for the kind words! Live music is starting to head back outside…One of this spring’s first outdoor shows was Penn State Altoona’s second annual “Ivyside Off the Rails: Glow On” music and arts festival last month at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. Penn State Altoona students, via voting and a local “battle of the bands” event during the winter, selected the performers for this year’s concert. The Roof won the opening slot as the local battle victors, and did an impressive job in setting the tone for the evening, warming up the student audience with their blend of rock, folk, blues and R&B flavors. Singer, guitarist and bassist Frank Musaraca, guitarist and bassist Ivan Zvorsky, guitarist Jake Finkbiner and drummer Skyler Scholl performed original songs such as “Trouble in My Veins,” “Alan’s Song,” “Kindle,” “The Drought” and

“Moving to the Country,” and also pulled out versions of the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” and their set-ending edition of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” Next was Brooklyn-based, Danish-born New Politics, who delivered a crisp and exciting blend of punk-based pop and rock flavors. This group was fun – singer and breakdancer David Boyd, guitarist, singer and keyboardist Soren Hansen and drummer Louis Vecchio drilled airtight, catchy melodies with nonstop action. Some of their songs included “Everywhere I Go (Kings and Queens),” “Girl Crush,” “Love Is a Drug,” “Dignity,” “Tonight You’re Perfect” and more. David provided constant movement on stage, suddenly giving a breakdancing clinic in the middle of one song, and then – on their set-closer “Harlem” (which presented an unexpected Bay City Rollers flavor) – David executed a back flip off the top of the bass drum on the riser, and stuck a perfect

the opener, and jokingly told the audience he was honored to let The Zombies close for him. And as he led into the song “Step into the Fire” – an ode to his mother having his back throughout life – he called his mom from the stage and let the audience cheer greetings to her. Some of Don’s other original songs included “Go Pack Your Suitcase,” “Television Sun” and the new song “Great Escape,” and he also stepped from the microphone to sing the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” directly to the audience, which turned into an audience sing-along. The Zombies soon came out and delivered a stellar set that featured songs from throughout their career. Founding members Rod Argent on keys and Colin Blunstone on lead vocals, plus guitarist Tom Toomey, drummer Steve Rodford and bassist Soren Koch performed all the essential hits, plus newer songs from their 2015 album Still Got That Hunger, curios and more. Some of their songs from the new album included “I Want You Back Again,” “Moving On” and the jazz-toned “Edge of the Rainbow.” They performed “I Love You,” a Zombies original that became a 1968 hit for the group People, and they did their own big hits, “Tell Her No,” “She’s Not There,” and – as part of a trio of songs from their celebrated 1968 album Odessey and Oracle – “Time of the Season.” They also performed “Care of Cell 44” and “This Will Be our Year” from Odessey and Oracle, the samba-flavored “Sanctuary,” and a strong rendition of Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Bring It On Home.” My favorite part of the night happened when the group broke into a nearly 10-minute version of “Hold Your Head Up,” the biggest hit from Rod Argent’s self-named band Argent. Now 72, Rod totally went for broke on his keyboards with an extended solo display that had the State Theatre crowd rocking. When that crowd demanded an encore following “She’s Not There,” The Zombies responded with another Argent original – “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” (a song later redone and popularized by Kiss). For both being 72 years of age, Rod and Colin still brought abundant energy, enthusiasm and grace as they sounded sharp and established a pleasant rapport with the audience, giving insights and memories on their various songs. Some of this month’s featured performers at the State Theatre include Pink Floyd tribute group The Machine on May 11, and singer Bettye Lavette on May 20.

McGarvey’s in Altoona provided the “pulpit” for two “Reverends” to perform in recent weeks. In late March, Indiana (state)based roots performers Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band electrified a packed house. Work duties prevented me from witnessing the two opening acts; the swan song performance of local roots quintet Nobody’s Heroes and Shane Speal & the Snakes. I arrived shortly into the headliner’s set, and witnessed as namesake, singer and guitarist Rev. Peyton, washboardist and backing singer Washboard Breezy Peyton, and drummer and backing singer Maxwell Senteney delivered fire-and-brimstone country, traditional and electric blues. Rev. Peyton sang with a hearty, boisterous howl and exhibited slide guitar mastery on a variety of instruments, including electric, cigar box, resonator guitars and even a stringed ax! All three band members whipped up the frenzy on original songs and select remakes from throughout their career; songs this night included “You Can’t Steal My Shine,” “Clap Your Hands,” the new song “Poor Until Payday,” “Saints Go Marching In” and more. Their energy, enthusiasm
Jukebox Bombers and personable stage presence kept the crowd happy and cheering for their entire performance. Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band performs at Pittsburgh’s Rex Theater on May 4 and Harrisburg’s Appalachian Brewing Company on May 5; and they will return continued on page 22

to McGarvey’s in September. Several days later in early April, the Reverend Horton Heat returned to McGarvey’s with their brand of fire-and-brimstone music. Likewise, work duties prevented me from catching the opening acts this night, including the first-ever Altoona appearance of Igor & the Red Elvises and Unknown Hinson. But the Reverend Horton Heat was heating up the house as I arrived with their fast-firing blend of punk-fueled roots rock, country and rockabilly. Frontman Jim “Reverend Horton” Heath, his longtime upright bass-playing cohort Jimbo Wallace, new drummer Arjunas “R.J.” Contreras and keyboardist Matt Jordan cranked out songs from throughout the group’s career. The group was in the midst of “Let Me Teach You How to Eat” when I first got there, and they also did numbers such as “Bales of Cocaine,” “400 Bucks,” “Galaxy 500” and their own torrid take on Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” to end their primary set. When the packed house demanded an encore, “R.J.” returned to the stage first to deliver a drum solo display, which found him eventually stepping away from his kit to tap on Jimbo’s big bass strings, the stagefront wooden crowd fence and more. The rest of the musicians then joined him to musically declare “It’s Martini Time.” Then Unknown Hinson, who had joined in with the group earlier, rejoined the band onstage to sing and play guitar on one of his numbers, “King of Country Western Troubadours,” to close out the night. The energy between band and crowd was continuous, resulting in a rowdy, happy-go-lucky time. Another Ramone graced McGarvey’s stage in late March, as Richie Ramone – who played drums for the Ramones during the 1980s – headlined a four-band bill. One Adam 12 and Pittsburgh’s Filthy Lowdown kicked off the night, followed by long-running New Jersey-based punk rockers Bigwig. Four members strong, Bigwig generated high-velocity, melody-geared punk rock original songs that kept the packed house excited; some of their anthems this night included “Waste,” “One Side,” “Sore Losers,” “Friends,” “Moosh,” “Dreams Are Dead,” “Alone in New Jersey” and “Counting Down.” Splitting time between his drum kit and the lead microphone, Richie Ramone and his band closed the night with a blistering set that blended his own original songs with select Ramones classics. Flanked by bassist and singer Clare Misstake, lead guitarist Glenn Gilbert and rhythm guitarist Ben Reagan (who took over behind the drum kit when Richie stepped out front), Richie did Ramones numbers such as “Smash You” (which he wrote for the group), “I Don’t Care,” “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Judy Is a Punk,” the Ramones take on CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” and the night-closing “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker.” Richie’s own original music spanned fast and furious punk rock numbers like “I Fix This” to slower, rock and metal-toned assaults. Nearly 11 years since going their separate ways, Backstreet Law reconvened for two reunion performances last month. I attended the first of the two, which took place at The Arena in State College. The Arena was a packed mass of humanity by the time I arrived, just as the opening group was concluding their set. Pittsburgh-based rock foursome Haven State soon took the stage, introducing an intriguing style that merged elements of progressive rock, funk and metal. Their songs featured detailed melodies with tempo shifts, interesting time signatures and unexpected twists and turns. Singer Josie Banks displayed a soaring, siren-like voice up front, backed by guitarist Cody House, bassist Brendan Mickoloff and drummer Lucas Martucci. Haven State showcased several original songs, including numbers from their debut EP Stratus such as “Broken Life,” “Dead Dog,” “Peachy Keen” and more. The packed house quickly escalated into frenzy as the reunited Backstreet Law roster of singer Matt Goodreau, guitarist Jeremy Edge, bassist Jamie Morral and drummer Tony Esposito launched into “Hockey Helmet,” and reprised their signature brand of hard rock and rap-edged metal. They proceeded through multiple crowd favorites, including “Falling,” “Party in the Parking Lot,” “Frustrated,” “Till December,” “Hollow,” “Sharks,” “Sorry,” “Open Your Eyes,” “For Dead” and more. They also broke out their popular heavy sendup of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin,” and closed their set with the Jamie-fronted rendition of Pantera’s “Walk.” Almost immediately, the Arena crowd started yelling for the encore, and repeating the title of one song they had not heard yet – “Seat Belt! Seat Belt!” Backstreet Law shortly resurfaced, and launched into the song’s trademark opening beats, turning the stage front dance floor area into a pulsing, moshing ocean of humanity. This night clearly showed that fans have not forgotten Backstreet Law or their music; this was one rowdy party!

The Arena and 105.9 Qwik-Rock crowned a new champion to cap their second annual Battle of the Bands competition last month. When the dust settled on the Battle finals on April 14, Altoona’s Fyre outscored second-place finishers Traverse the Abyss from Scranton, third-place finishers 86 Bullets from Baltimore, State College’s Making State and Bedford County’s Rest in Peace; winning a paying gig at The Arena plus other prizes. I caught two more of the preliminary rounds leading up to the finals…The third round qualifier featured Fyre, along with Altoona’s PennSoulVania, Williamsport’s Ic.a.Nikki and Altoona’s Maul…And the fourth round qualifier featured 86 Bullets, Lewistown’s Psycho Prophecy and Clearfield’s Deadside. The Flight 19 “Party Plane” will park in the hangar permanently after June, ending a nearly 20-year run on area stages. The group welcomed past members during their final appearance at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge last month. The group’s current edition – singer Brian Thomas, guitarist and singer Rogan Allen, bassist Joe George, keyboardist and singer Phil Steele and drummer Paul Caracciolo – filled the Four Dees’ dance floor with their uptempo variety of rock, country, funk and dance favorites. The show’s key highlight was a reunion of the original “Party Plane” crew – Brian, guitarist and singer John McKelvey, bassist and singer Scott Imler, bassist Jim Phillips and drummer Darin Hand – to perform a set that featured the group’s early cover and original song favorites, including their signature party anthem “Hands.” Following the reunion, the current Flight 19 kept bodies gyrating until night’s end with tunes from Prince, Walk the Moon, Stevie Wonder, Three Dog Night, Toto, the Black Crowes, Love and Theft, Wild Cherry and many more. Area fans will have one more chance to see Flight 19, as their final public concert will take place on June 8 at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza. Hate Grenade celebrated the release of their second fulllength CD, The King Is Dead, with a CD-release party early last month at McGarvey’s. Everett-based metal rockers Paradigm opened the night before my arrival, followed by Johnstown’s Darkness On The Radio. These guys roared with their signature skull-crushing metal sound, performing pulverizing original tunes like “Sons of Devilry,” “New Murders Old Crows,” “Judas Take the Wheel” and more. The commanding, monstrous wall of sound levied by lead howler and guitarist Jason Straw, lead guitarist Jay Snyder, bassist Greg Hatch and drummer Jason Kirchner filled the room and brought everybody to full attention front and center. Hate Grenade then pulled the pin and detonated their set, mixing songs from the new CD with previous tunes. Frontman Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera, bassist Donny D and drummer Mike Powers opened with the new CD’s title tune, “The King Is Dead,” followed by the first single “Burn,” and other new numbers such as “Reborn,” “Temptress,” “Watch Your Back,” “Rue,” “Come With Me” and more. Hate Grenade’s presentation was explosive from start to end, as the group pulled all stops to keep the audience charged and cheering. Hate Grenade will open for Butcher Babies and Nonpoint at Reverb in Reading on May 7. Lansing, Michigan-based rockers The Devil’s Cut made a return visit to McGarvey’s last month, with special guests Phobos Anomaly. Unveiling their second full-length CD, Good Luck of a Giant, Phobos Anomaly kicked off the show with a set that mixed songs from the new CD with material from last year’s self-titled debut CD. Singer and bassist Mark Holland, guitarist and singer Jon Spearly and drummer Damien Page demonstrated innovative melodies with hard-hitting arrangements and tight execution, and kept the music constant for the duration of their set. The Devil’s Cut reestablished their hard-hitting sound, which merges edgy, punk-toned rock with blue-collar lyrics and a slight hint of Bruce Springsteen. Singer and guitarist Joe Fox,
guitarist Corey Staley, bassist Pat Hogan and drummer Derek Vaive mixed original songs from their latest album, People Let You Down, with select cover tunes. They did songs from the CD such as “Forty Two Arrows” and “Old Ghosts and Classic Cars,” and pulled out spirited renditions of Tom Petty’s “American Girl,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” and the Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers.” Joe displayed a hearty voice up front, and he and the rest of the band gave a spirited, enthusiastic performance for the small audience in attendance this night. I fulfilled one of my New Year’s resolutions last month, finally paying my first visit to Speal’s Tavern in New Alexandria to see the Jukehouse Bombers in action. Speal’s has become a popular venue in western PA for the blues, and houses the Cigar Box Guitar Museum, with multiple cigar box guitars and other unique blues instruments on display. A favorite at this venue, the Jukehouse Bombers lit up the room with their boisterous brand of electric blues. The triple-guitar army of the father/son tandem of Jimmy and Joe Roach plus Kirsch, along with Troy Laney on bass and the group’s newest member, former Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing drummer Josh Williams, cranked out original tunes from their two CD’s, plus some blues and southern rock covers.
Jim Hoffman, Bill Hunter, Craig Alright, Dewayne McKnight, Bill Hocherl & Ronald Banker during Unter Uns Open Mic Night Highlights were abundant, from watching Joe switch off between various guitars, including his own cigar box guitar, to watching Josh’s powerhouse drumming and the nuances and fills he threw into the mix. Song highlights included the group’s original tunes such as “My Dues Ain’t Ever Paid,” “Born to Hard Time,” “Rooster Gets to Crowin,’” “Burnt Biscuit,” “Winding Our Way continued on page 24..

Back Home” and more. Their cover selection included a hard blues-rock makeover of Charlie Daniels’ “Long Haired Country Boy,” the James Gang’s “Funk #49,” Blackfoot’s “Highway Song,” the Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay,” the Allman Brothers’ “Soulshine” and more. Speal’s Tavern was a highlight as well; this room has a great atmosphere for live music, as folks here are into the music, and paid undivided attention to the Jukehouse Bombers from start to end. Thickhead Productions presented the double-bill of Baltimore’s Deaf Scene and State College’s DopplerPoppins last month at Zeno’s. I caught the tail end of DopplerPoppins’ set, as they generated soulful, funk-rocking grooves on original numbers and an extended jamming rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire.” Deaf Scene – guitarist Dave Fullerton, bassist Eric Courtney and drummer Brett Schatz – took the Zeno’s crowd on a cosmic instrumental joyride; merging elements of progressive and indie rock, jazz-styled fusion, jam improvisation and 1960s-styled psychedelic rock into a style uniquely their own. Dave incorporated a freewheeling variety of guitar effects
and distortion into each number, with Eric and Brett generating moving, versatile rhythms. Deaf Scene performed original instrumental compositions such as “Rijal,” “Godzilla Skin,” “Three-Pound Universe,” “Zealot,” “Nebula” and “Acid Fight,” and also did renditions of Tool’s “Schism” and “Sober,” plus a Foo Fighters “Everlong”-rooted jam excursion to finish the night. Deaf Scene will perform later this month at the 9th annual Domefest festival at the Port Royale Farm near Bedford on May 17-19. I caught up with western PA hard rockers fAil last month as they rattled the rafters at Rocky’s Tavern in Johnstown. Singer Mike May, guitarist AJ Hamara, bassist Colin McCallay and drummer Frank Tomaselli brought full-fury hard rock, alternative and metal, much of it from the 1990s. Over the two sets I witnessed, fAil fired off tunes from Candlebox, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Papa Roach, Slipknot, Breaking Benjamin, Marilyn Manson, Tool, Korn, System Of a Down and more. Their execution was strong; Mike’s voice brought the right blend of melody, grit and aggression, while A.J. displayed sharp solo work, and Colin and Frank provided the booming, battering rhythm section. Rocky’s Tavern was digging it, with a steady crowd of folks grooving in front of the band for the duration.

Peter Wolf & Rich Dasch | Gran Sasso When they demanded more at night’s end, fAil responded with Rage Against the Machine’s “Sleep Now in the Fire.” I also caught up with Stormy as they performed last month at Hollidaysburg’s Argonne Cafe. The venue was full as Stormy – singer and harmonica player Mark Montrella, keyboardist Charlie Leiden, singer Carol Fedeli, drummer Ray Fedeli and guitarist Brandon Stewart – did a tasty mixture of classic rock, pop, folk and blues. I enjoyed their eclectic mixture; Stormy performed a lot of music you don’t ordinarily hear anyone else doing, from Traffic’s “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” and Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” to the Carol-fronted Carole King double-shot of “I Feel the Earth Move” and “It’s Too Late,” the Steely Dan pair of “Pretzel Logic” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” and Brandon growling out the voice on Tom Waits’ “Heartattack and Vine.” Mark kept the mood upbeat and happy, wailing some sinister harmonica a few times during the night, while Charlie tickled the ivories early and often with tasty solos and fills, and Ray gave each song just the right rhythmic touch, varying his drumbeats from soft underscores to upbeat and driving. Stormy delivered a pleasant time and kept the crowd happy, enough so that the folks called them back for an encore, and the group answered with a version of Elton John’s “Rocket Man.” Other performers I saw recently included Felix & the Hurricanes, capping Easter Sunday at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern…Blind Liver – the alias of acoustic guitarist and singer Seth Shumaker – presenting his wide-ranging musical mixture at McGarvey’s in late March…and various open mic performers Tuesdays at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg, Wednesdays at the Unter Uns in Altoona, and even a Thursday open mic at the aforementioned Speal’s Tavern in New Alexandria. News and notes…The 51st annual Blair County Arts Festival happens May 19-20 at Penn State Altoona; among this year’s performers are Stormy, Ride the Song, Jay Vonada Jazz Quartet, Stephen Johnopolos Trio, Camara Drum & Dance, Born & the Beanstalk, the Dave Villani Trio, R2B2, Lucia Valentine, the Altoona Brass Collective and more...Walkney, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, the Chrome Hearts and Tree will perform during this year’s Pints for Pets Brewfest on May 12 at Altoona’s People’s Natural Gas Field; proceeds benefit the Central PA Humane Society…Pittsburgh favorites The Clarks this month release their new CD, Madly in Love at the End of the World…Natascha & the Spy Boys have released their first fulllength CD, called …That’s the Hardest Part…Negan releases their debut EP, Burnt Pages, this month…Simple Gifts presents their annual Folk College event May 25-27 at Juniata College in Huntingdon. The area music scene recently mourned the unexpected passing of Eric Deamer on March 23. Eric was 48. Eric played guitar with a number of Huntingdon and Mifflin County-based rock bands during the past three decades, including Defiance, Thin Ice and others. And we also send our condolences to Priscilla “the Tambourine Lady” Gati after the passing of her husband, Robert Gati, last month at the age of 61. CHRIS BELL 100% BLUES – BAPTIZED BY THE BLUES (Silverbridge Records) “…I learned from the Bible and the belt” is testimony offered up by Chris Bell on the soulful opening song and title track of his latest CD, Baptized By the Blues. After exploring the Americana and country sides of his

sometimes all in the same night! When I got there Anatomy of the Sacred was just finishing up their set. It was awesome to see Brenda behind the mic belting out such hard rockin’ dare I say metal! She was killin’ it and it was amazing to see and hear. I’ve heard about Maiden America for a while now and I’m so glad I finally got the chance to see them. It’s always fun to see Space rockin’ away on the drums, plus I saw some other familiar faces in this band, Sean Padelsky and AC Alfano both on guitar, Justin Shaffer on bass, and a new face and voice on lead vocals, Gordon Tittsworth. Letting loose and banging my head a little while was just what I needed, it was a great way to end the night, and ultimately this month of music. Still, even at this point I thought it was final hoorah as Rachel Rocks. You can see by the length of this article I squeezed as much as humanly possible into this month. I saw a lot of bands and I barely slept. Little did I know my brother had other plans… I’m looking forward to the takeover of the next generation of PA Musician Magazine. I know Josh has the same mind of Dad, so now that he has accepted the mission of taking over the magazine, his mind is on overdrive coming up with crazy ideas. I know I personally can’t wait to see what happens. Thanks again to all of the musicians, businesses and fans that advertised to support this LAST Issue of Robin and Whitey Noll as the publisher/editors, etc. This will be issue #415… Wow.. what a ride.. Thanks Dad for coming up with this amazing concept and bringing it to fruition and supporting our family through all of your hard work and dedication to the music community. You both did a truly outstanding job! Next month will be issue #1 for Josh Noll. If you want to be in the FIRST Issue with Josh Noll behind the helm, please send him an email at JoshNoll@pamusician.net. Both this issue and Josh’s first issue are both collector’s editions for sure! I personally hope that our advertisers stick with us through the change in command, and even more advertisers will jump on board! Again, I can’t stress enough… the support that you’ve given our family over the years is so appreciated, we are truly thankful for each and every one of you for reading, supporting, and most importantly advertising in the PA Musician Magazine!!! musical persona on his last album, Bell Countyline, Chris returns to indulge a variety of blues flavors over Baptized By the Blues’ 13 tracks. Blues provides the launching pad for Chris to explore a myriad of styles, and as a result, no two tracks here are the same. Chris explores familiar blues themes as well; struggling to make ends meet on the shadowy shuffle “Paycheck to Paycheck,” showing resilience on the jazzy blues of “Second Wind,” and cautioning about a hard part of town on the hard-rocking “Shantytown.” Alcohol isn’t enough on the folk/country-toned “Whiskey Ain’t Workin,’” life’s burdens overwhelm on the dark slow blues of “Elevator to Heaven,” and Chris states his lovin’ credentials on the Memphis-flavored “I’m Your Man.” Chris sings his words with grit, confidence and swagger, and he displays his string-bending skills prominently throughout the album with scorching solo work and creative use of tones and effects. He displays his dexterity on a broad range of other instruments as well, including bass, mandolin, piano, organs, harmonica, tambourine and drums. His melodies are strong and concise, and his arrangements build, surround and support each melody. Recorded, produced and engineered in State College by Chris, Baptized By the Blues sounds clean, crisp, busy and full. Baptized By the Blues, Chris Bell displays his credentials as a seasoned performer on this album, and delivers a strong, sturdy and edgy set. (This CD can be obtained through Chris’ Reverbnation page and CD Baby.) ONE ADAM 12 – SOPHOMORE JINX (no label) As the title suggests, Sophomore Jinx is the second full-length album from Cambria County-based rock quintet One Adam 12. Their 2016 debut album, Earworm, introduced One Adam 12’s unique musical world, as the group blended elements of hard rock, metal, punk rock, surf rock, and horror movie-themed soundbytes and lyrics. That blend largely continues on Sophomore Jinx, at an overall faster clip. Punk-fueled rhythms drive
many of the songs, courtesy of the powerful tandem of bassist “Mad Dog” Joe Stiles and drummer Brandon Adams. Lead singer Lloyd Rummell and Bill Stiles provide chugging guitar riffs and solo work; and as he did on Earworm, Tony Dostal’s timely use of soundbytes and digital effects add depth and mood to the songs. Lloyd’s distinctive, bold singing voice is front and center on each song; he sings about moving forward and not stagnating on the disc-opener “Stepping Out,” and continues that restless theme on the fast and boisterous “The More Things Change.” Lloyd exudes the joy of being abducted by a UFO on “Walking on the Moon,” and expresses the amorous hopes of Frankenstein’s monster on “Build Me a Bride.” One of the album’s most memorable moments is a tersely-framed montage of Jack Nicholson’s Col. Jessup rant from the film A Few Good Men, leading into the defiantly-themed rocker “Bullet Proof.” Kazoos help set the initial whimsical tone of the punchy “I’ll Wait,” and Lloyd gets inside the head of Jack the Ripper on the album-closer “Legendary.” One Adam 12 again shows their knack for strong, catchy melodies, as many of these tunes are serious threats to ‘earworm’ their way into your cranium after first listen. The performances are energetic and purposeful, and Lloyd’s power, range and clarity make each lyric understandable. With Brandon Adams handling the recording, mixing and mastering, the album sounds crisp and well-balanced, with instruments, voices and soundbytes coming through clearly. One Adam 12

strengthens their resume with Sophomore Jinx, a catchy, clever and captivating set well worth checking out. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s Bandcamp page.) TUKURPA – HIDDEN BROKEN PIECES (Canadian American Records) First surfacing from the Harrisburg area a decade ago, Tukurpa has forged an intriguing career and musical approach. Named after a Hopi Indian word for an eternal dream world, Tukurpa blends a variety of musical angles, Hopi Indian philosophy and social commentary on their new full-length CD, Hidden Broken Pieces. The group’s longtime core of bassist Carl “Craig” Hancock, guitarist Matt Kramer and drummer Chris Arnold, plus more recent addition Jamey Reisinger on lead vocals, keys and violin, mix elements of hard rock, progressive, classical, folk and psychedelic rock into a captivating set that never stays in one place for too long. Jamey’s siren-like vocals and distinctive phrasing are front and center for much of the album, and her classical-styled piano frequently provides interesting contrast and counterpoint to Tukurpa’s hard-rocking tendencies. The songs are often elaborate, varying textures, tempos and intensities, and featuring cryptic lyrics, spoken word passages and more. Hard rock provides Tukurpa’s primary foundation, and the group displays their rock thunder on the disc’s opening trio of “Dream of Me,” “Leprechaun” and “Angel.” They generate a hard-rocking waltz on the domestic abuse-themed “Picture Frame,” and conjure a symphonic heavy metal flavor with the stern-toned “Sacrifice.” In a milder tone, Tukurpa worries about the planet’s future on “Wonder Why,” ponders relationship dynamics on “You Change – I Change,” and considers a tough decision on the disc-closing “Circumstance and Evidence.” For some different flavors, the group dabbles in Jewish klezmer music on “Happy Tune,” and channels 1960s-era psychedelia on “Blue Skies.” Tukurpa delivers nuanced performances throughout the album, and their attention to detail – both instrumentally and vocally – becomes apparent with repeated listens. Engineered by Marshall Deasy IV and Ken Matson, the disc sounds deep and clear. And coupled with conceptual sketched artwork on the cover, this album both sonically and visually provides plenty of mystique. Tukurpa demonstrates their unique artistry and vision on Hidden Broken Pieces, in the process establishing themselves as a rock band that defies labeling or convention, and pursues their own distinctive muse. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.tukurpa.com.)
