ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
35 YEARS! Wow! My retirement plan is to continue to work as long as the music industry continues to support our pages. I so appreciate all of your support over the years. By far we have not covered the music scene as well as we should have, or could have but we continue to strive to do our best and have a continued desire to do better each issue. 35 Years ago Whitey Noll, my husband, was 40 years old and was at another dead end job and had the need to take care of our 4 children. His friend and boss at the time, Mike Staub, told him what he needed to do was start his own business. Mike was and is owner of “The Apartment Guide”. Whitey was like, “right,” we were on welfare and had no money to speak of so Whitey went to the library and checked out a book entitled “The Have & the Have Nots”, we of course were the “Have Nots”. He studied up on publishing and with the help of Mike giving us point-
ers on what to do and how to get started the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine was born. With pure determination and his mom’s credit card for gas and a few good friends who loaned us money to print the first issue, he began the endeavor of creating The Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. He was a paid performing musician in the 60’s and early 70’s and he thought it would be a wonderful tool for
‘ado’ it is a great pleasure to continue to let you know who and what is happening throughout this great state and hope you join us in that endeavor and keep us alive until the day that we are no longer needed or wanted. Over the years Whitey has given me the permission to carry on his vision and I have strived to do that. When we moved into the computer world and started doing more of the paper on our own he bowed out and moved on to other endeavors and left me the responsibility to keep on fishing to feed the family. I am honored and blessed that you all have continued to support the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. We are a DIY endeavor and solely funded by our advertisers. I also want to take time to thank all the many people that help me put this paper together and get it out to the public (because without getting it into the hands of the public there’s no sense in doing a paper) including: Keith Hummel, Jim Price (The Professor), Rachel Rocks, Meredith Kaminek, Deb Whitcomb, Eric Hoffman, John Kerecz. Deanne Trio, Randy Wilson, Shawn Kurey, Jimi Jaymz, Imelda Redding, and Jeff Pittinger, Center Daily Times (Amy Sinclair & Chad Cowder). Without the help of others and God, my heavenly Father who encourages continued.on page 26...
Whitey, lead singer for the Starfires musicians, clubs and all music related industries to have a publication that would let people know who and what was happening in the area and many musicians have used our pages to market and build their careers and their fan base including: Kix, Sharks, Hybrid Ice, Silver City, Live, Fuel, The Hooters, The Badlees, Emily’s Toybox, UUU, Candlelight Red, Halestorm, and a host of others. Whitey’s thought was to have a publication that musicians could use to market themselves without judgement and criticism. He felt it was our job to let the general public know who and what was happening and not be a critique type of publication. His thought was that one person could love a band or performer and the next person could hate them and not stand their sound, he did not want to get in the middle. Plus he said it takes guts to get up and perform ones music and musicians didn’t need the negativity. We still hold to those principles today. So without further

Casino with my friend Holly to see Emily’s Toybox. Hollywood Casino unfortunately doesn’t allow me to take my camera in their facility, which personally I think is ridiculous when everyone else has their cell phones with cameras, but whatever… Hollywood Casino is quite an interesting place to see a band. It has a great stage and a nice huge dance floor. One thing about the casino is it is a great place to people watch. There are so many people of all ages and shapes and sizes on the dance floor. It is very entertaining in itself. Then ya throw in Emily’s Toybox and things just get crazy. There is no swearing from the stage, but ETB knows they just need to play the song and their crowd will sing the words for them. Emily’s Toybox has been playing for so many years they’ve developed one heck of a fan base. It’s always nice to see so many people out supporting local music! After we both lost a couple bucks in the slot machines we decided it was time to move on. Our next stop was at the Colonial Lounge for the Nate Myers Trio. It worked out great to be able to see their reaction of seeing Nate on the cover last month all by himself. If you know Nate Myers, you easily know he is by far one of the most humble guys on the planet. It was almost impossible to take a picture of him all by himself. Unfortunately, since we couldn’t get all the guys in one place at one time at such short notice, it was the
best thing we could do. I think ultimately it worked out great. When we got to the Colonial Lounge Nate, Pete, and Chad were jamming away and everyone was moving and grooving to the music. The Colonial Lounge is just a nice place to sit back, relax, and chill… after the craziness of the casino, it was just what I needed. You can catch The Nate Myers Trio most Tuesdays starting at 8pm at The Grotto Pub in Enola. Plus you can catch the full Nate Myers & the Aces throughout the midstate and beyond. Check out their full schedule at www.natemyers.com. The next night I was finally home the same time Smokin Gunnz were back at the Double K. Smokin Gunnz always draw a huge crowd at the Double K and this night was no different. All of the tables were packed, and it was standing room only. The dance floor wasn’t as packed as usual, I think everyone was exhausted from it being a beautiful day outside. I’m just glad people still came out to enjoy the music and to sit back and enjoy a nice relaxing night with their friends. Smokin Gunnz just got back from their super great week at Ocean City Maryland’s Bike Week. Sometime I will get down there and experience the madness. They will be back rockin’ the Double K on Thanksgiving Eve! Get your pies baked early and your turkey in the oven so you can come out and enjoy some deep

Out & About continued friend Southern Rock! Check out their ad for their full schedule in this issue or on their website, www.smokingunnz.com. The following weekend I was already up in Perry County visiting family and on the way home I decided to swing in to Tubby’s. Fith was just taking the stage, and unfortunately I once again just missed Nothingmen. I’ve heard a lot about those guys. They are one of the newest cover/original bands out there jamming the area everywhere they possibly can. They have a great line-up of experienced musicians, and with Trevor Schubert as their lead vocalist, I’m sure they can rock your faces off! One of these days I will make it out early enough to see their show, or hopefully some venue will give them their well deserved headlining spot.
I haven’t seen Fith in an extremely long time. I guess, from what I’ve been told, they took a hiatus for a few years, but they are back and they are ready to rock! When I was looking at their Facebook page they even have a link to their myspace page, so you know they’ve been around for a very long time… lol. Adam is an amazing lead singer with a strong voice and great stage presence. Plus Don Price has been rocking many different bands for years on guitar and it’s always great to see him rockin’ the stage. I’m glad I was at the right place at the right time and got a chance to check these guys out. It was a great time for sure! Another show I’m totally bummed I missed was Jackyl. I also heard that was quite a show! Tubby’s does a great job at bringing different bands in and mixing up their band schedule to give everyone a chance. Ritt does a

Space - Penntera Drummer great job behind the sound board making any band sound as good as he possibly can. Tubby’s room is huge compared to other local rooms, there are plenty of seats on a regular night, and still a nice big dance floor. They also have the ability to pull all of the tables out like they did for the Jackyl show and pack as many people in as possible. If you want to go see a band somewhere with a great stage, lights, and sound, check out Tubby’s ad in this issue. They also do a great job at mixing up the genres of music so there is usually something for everyone, with everything from country to metal, and a lot of rockin’ music in between! The next time I got the chance to go Out & About I headed to Johnny Joe’s for Penntera. I’ve only seen Penntera on Tubby’s nice big stage for so long it was hard to see them on such a tiny stage, but they still rocked as hard as they possibly could. Out & About continued time seeing them with their new lead singer Mikey Papers. I’m so glad they were able to find a new front man so quickly that obviously loves Pantera as much as the rest of them. Mikey does a great job at not only singing the songs himself, but getting the crowd involved too. As the night went on the dance floor in front of Mikey got more and more crowded with people singing and dancing along. November 12th Penntera will be back up at Tubby’s on the big stage tearing it apart! Opening up the night for them will be Shout at the Devil. You can check out Penntera’s ad in this issue for their full schedule. If you love Pantera’s “Cemetery Gates,” “Cowboys from Hell,” or “Walk,” or any of the other amazing Pantera songs, do yourself a favor and get out there and check these guys out, trust me, you won’t be disappointed. The next night I headed out to see the band on our cover this month, Latimore Sky. I only got a chance to catch these guys once before at the Millennium Music Conference, so I wanted to go see a good full show so I could get a real feel of what Latimore Sky is all about. These guys are an original/cover band. Their originals are very powerful and you can just feel their emotion and their passion when they play them. They also do a great job at covering a lot of your favorite artists with everything from rock n’ roll to country. I went down to the Glad Crab in Dallastown to see these guys. I haven’t been to the Glad Crab in years. It was cool getting out to a different venue that supports local music. There aren’t many left and we have to get out there and support the
ones that do! Latimore Sky does an amazing job at providing their own lights and sound. Syd has a whole pedal system designed just to control the lights, it’s a pretty impressive set-up, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. You can read all about Latimore Sky in this month’s issue, you can also see their full schedule in their ad. On a side note they are looking for a new bass player, their current bass player, Jeff, is moving to North Carolina to live closer to his family. If you want to be part of a band that has their act together and loves performing, reach out to them at latimoresky@gmail.com. Well that’s all for this month… It’s hard to believe 10 YEARS of being Out & About, seeing bands and meeting new amazing people. Things have changed yet stayed the same in so many ways. I’ve seen so many amazing bands come and go, and sometimes even come back again. Speaking of coming back again… Did you hear Take 147 is coming back to the stage!! Their first show back was actually Friday, Oct. 28th, unfortunately
Terry & Rachel headbanging!! this issue won’t be out in time for you to know that, but I’m sure I will be writing all about it next month. Take 147 will only be performing every couple of months, so continued on page 14...

I hope you take advantage and get out there and check them out. Another band I am excited to see is coming back to Tubby’s is Candlelight Red on Friday, November 25th. They will also be playing at a few other PA locations in November, so if you were a fan of theirs since the beginning like I am, check out their schedule on their website. Candlelight Red was sponsored by Jagermeister.. CURSE YOU JAGER. Their name brings back many memories of the Hardware Bar. I always hated going down there alone, but Candlelight Red was one of the bands I would make the exception for. The worst part about the November 25th date is that it’s also the same night Kix is back at the Radisson for their yearly attack! In all of my 10 years that is definitely the case, it seems that so much of the best stuff happens on the same exact day at the same exact time. Sometimes I really do wish they would get that cloning machine done so I can be more than one place at a time. Not to mention that it is also Black Friday, so chances are I will be up at the crack of dawn running around for the best deals, so I will also be exhausted… lol.

bands that you are exposed to during your showcase, trade shows with them, go to new towns, see new sights. Come to the trade show, talk to people, mingle… My personal opinion of the MMC and any conference for that matter, is that it is what you make of it… If you sit in your room at the hotel, or stay at your house and don’t come meet everyone yeah it will seem lame, but trust me, it’s not. Head to the trade show with a backpack full of fun, merch, CDs, download cards, etc. Create your gimmick so people will remember you. If you’ve been around long enough you might remember Lzzy Hale walking through in a beautiful white dress, carrying a rose.. Promoting her “Rose in December” song. Yes, it’s true Halestorm used the PA Musician Magazine to market their band when they were first starting out and in the state of PA!! Anything is possible, any band can “make it” you just have to find a way to be creative and find
ers, readers, and supporters. We truly would not be without all of you. Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me into their “family” or their business with open arms. I’ve truly felt loved and appreciated (for the most part) from all of you! I will continue to support local music as long Emily’s Toybox doing their toilet paper thing
Aaron, Travis, Rachel Dave & Chris (Steel) One band that has remained the same since the beginning is Steel. No new members, the same guys, rockin’ their hearts out at every show! They are the very first band I saw at Angie’s in Highspire. [Editor’s Note: I told her to go see them because I knew they woud treat her nice, and they did] They are truly an amazing group of people inside and out, on and off the stage too! Steel are the real deal, that’s for sure. Check out their ad in this issue and get out there and support them. I know one of their bigger shows this month is at the Middletown Moose on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 23rd. You can check out their full schedule in this issue and get there and rock n’ roll all night with these guys. That’s another thing is they’ve also advertised with us every month for OVER 10 years too! There are plenty of musicians that I’ve seen playing for all 10 years, but mostly they are with new members/bands along the way somewhere. Thank you so much to all of our advertis-

as I possibly can. Music is good for the soul, and it definitely helps make me a much happier person! Earlier I mentioned the Millennium Music Conference. They have already selected quite a few bands for the 21st MMC in February, but you can still submit for a showcase thru November. So, it’s not too late! Get those submissions in!!! Even if your band doesn’t get a showcase spot if you submit you still get free admission to the trade show/panels, and all of the networking you can imagine. Every year of the MMC it is a 4 day party that takes a whole month to recover from. We all have a blast and we all have one thing in common, MUSIC. People play, talk, see, hear, and feel music, all weekend long!! The MMC is definitely one of the biggest parties of the year for the Harrisburg area. The part that continues to kill me every year is how little the local musicians support it. I know the story, trust me I’ve heard it, you have to play venues that you get paid to play for free. your niche, just like Halestorm. If you have any questions about the MMC, check out their ad in this issue, or visit them online at www.musicconference.net. Hope to see you there! I think I’m done ranting and raving for the month. I am extremely thankful to be Rachel Rocks and being Out & About supporting local music. I’m thankful to all of my readers and supporters. I’m also thankful when I meet new readers while we are all Out & About, so please stop me and say Hi! You can always reach me at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. Oh, and for the record. Still going strong… 52 days sober!! Get out there and support local music! Have a very Happy Thanksgiving with your family and friends!!!

Latimore Sky… Good Ol’ Rock N’ Roll Article & Photos by Rachel Rocks
PJ Groft Latimore Sky is a good ole’ rock n’ roll band from the Gettysburg area. They are an original and cover band that plays music the way it should be, filled with passion and emotion. They’ve only been playing together for almost exactly two years, but you can easily see how well they all jive together on and off the stage. PJ Groft and Rhyan Hoover actually went to high school together and after years of playing in different bands, one day they got together and started talking, and they decided they were ready to start an original band. They put an ad out on Craigslist and they quickly got responses from many different bass and guitar players. Luckily for them Sid Snyder and Jeff Zepp showed up to audition on the same day. Both guys showed up with instruments, which was already a step in the right direction, and when they started playing, they knew they found the guys they needed, and Latimore Sky was complete. PJ Groft has been playing music for almost as long as he can remember. He started playing piano at 6 years old, and he played various instruments all the way up to his days at Lebanon Valley College where his friend Dustin taught him how to play the guitar. His Dad bought him his first acoustic, and he’s been working on his skill ever since. Not long after learning how to play the basic chords, PJ started writing originals. PJ’s musical influences span all genres of music, but he enjoys songs with great guitar solos and meaningful lyrics the most. Some of his favorite bands are Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Shooter Jennings, Foo Fighters and Jason Isbell.
Sid Snyder November, 2016
Rhyan Hoover has been playing drums and percussion instruments since his early childhood. Even in the school band he wanted to play drums, but the band director said there were too many drummers, so he had to play the trumpet. Drumming was his passion, so he started mowing grass til he could buy his own kit. He worked hard to get that kit, and then worked even harder to learn how to play it properly. Rhyan played in a few different garage bands learning his style and craft. After high school, Rhyan joined the military and became a M1A1 Tanker. There he continued to master his craft while blowing things up and protecting our freedom. When he went in the army he was only able to bring his cymbal, bass, and snare, it wasn’t much, but it was enough to keep the rust off of his sticks. After his military career, Rhyan played in a few heavy metal bands, he slowed down, got married, and sold most of his equipment, but luckily he kept his one kit, and trust me, that’s all he needs. Sid Snyder is a man of very few words. I learned quickly that when Sid speaks, the rest of the band listens. Sid has been surrounded by musicians his entire life. His parents met one night when his Dad’s lead singer of his band
Rhyan Hoover
didn’t show up, luckily Sid’s Mom was at the show and she could sing, so she took the stage and the rest is history, you could say, “love at first note”. Sid was influenced by his older brother’s musical taste with bands such as Alice Cooper, Beatles, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Neil Young, Uriah Heep and many more. As he grew up, Sid enjoyed late 80’s and early 90’s rock and metal from Dokken, Iron Maiden, Queensrych & Rush. He has been in numerous bands doing both covers and originals. Not only does Sid bring a tremendous amount of musical talent and knowledge to Latimore Sky, he also contributes with writing and singing. Sid is currently playing in three different projects which sometimes makes scheduling a little tricky, but they make it work. Jeff Zepp has a very classic musician’s history, he started playing bass because a girl wanted him to, her name was Judy, in his 9th grade Chemistry class. Unfortunately things didn’t progress with Judy, but they obviously did with his bass playing, I guess she was too in love with Nikki Sixx. Jeff has been playing guitar and bass for quite some time. He has been in numerous cover bands, and this is his first gig with an original band. He loves the freedom and ability to be expressive through his playing. He provides the steady drive that a rhythm section needs and the finesse that any rock band would love. Jeff has many different types of influences but being a 90’s child, some of his greatest influences are Nirvana, STP and Sound Garden. PJ is the main song writer of the group, but Sid has also written a couple of songs too. They bring the basics of the song to the band and they all add in their own creative flair. They’ve come up with some of their songs just by starting practice with a jam, and before they know it, it becomes an original song. No matter what song anyone writes there are only 12 notes, it’s up to the band to make those 12 notes sound as good as they possibly can, and Pennsylvania Musician Magazine
that’s exactly what they do. I personally love their song “Rain”. Every time I’ve seen and heard them play it you can just feel their emotion pouring off the stage. It almost feels like a ballad, but then there is this crazy emotional explosion in the middle that puts it in a category all by itself. It is an amazing song that hits you in your core. All of their originals have their own uniqueness to them. They also cover all different genres of music from everything to rock to country to blues, and some of their songs even have a jam band feel to it. So far they’ve recorded all of their songs on their own in their garage, but they hope to record a full album soon. Three of their songs “Tranquility”, “Modern Jesse James”, and “Rain” are already available in digital format on your favorite music sites, iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc.. They also have a few videos of them playing on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/latimoresky. Even though their main focus is on original music, they still play plenty of covers to help pay the bills. They can easily play a whole night of music all by themselves. They cover everything from classic rock to country and a little bit of everything else in between! They know how to keep people on the dance floor and having fun all night long. As with any band, the guys know they would not be here without all of the support they get from their friends and family. They wanted to send out a BIG, GIANT THANK YOU from the bottom of their hearts. PJ wanted to definitely thank his wife and kids for all of their sacrifice, his Dad, and his brother Lee for teaching him all about what good music really sounds like, and of course to Dustin for teaching him how to play guitar. Rhyan wants to thank his amazing wife for encouraging him to get out there and play again. Sid simply said all of his family and friends all the way back through the generations that started playing music before he ever could. Jeff wants to thank his daughter for the inspiration and the strength to keep doing
Jeff Zepp
what he loves to do. They all thrive from the participation and interaction with the crowd, so another special thanks goes out to everyone who’s ever gotten up on the dance floor and danced along, or even those who just showed up and listened, obviously you can’t be much of a band without a crowd to hear you play. You can come hear them play for yourself on November 26th at the Tourist Inn Back Room with Agents of Lewton and Nothingmen. They will also be at Double K on December 9th. To see their full schedule you can check out their facebook page at facebook.com/latimoresky or simply check out their ad in this issue. If you’d like to get them booked at your venue, you can e-mail them at LatimoreSky@gmail.com. 15

Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers. Tupac Shakur, Jane’s Addiction and Pearl Jam are among the first-time nominees on the ballot for induction next year into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. More than 800 artists, historians and music-industry officials vote, with results announced in December and induction next April. Other first-time nominees are: Journey, Bad Brains, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez and Steppenwolf. American singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature, a stunning announcement that for the first time bestowed the prestigious award on a musician for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” Dylan, 75, is arguably the most iconic poet-musician of his generation. Songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’“ became anthems for the U.S. anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s. His impact on popular culture was immense. As a result of the announcement, Dylan’s music has increased by more than 500 percent on Spotify. The award will be handed out on December 10th, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896. Kings of Leon recently released their seventh studio album, “Walls”, and announced an upcoming U.S. tour. The opening gig is on January 12th in National Harbor, Maryland. Critics seem to be big fans of the album, with the New York Times referring to the project as “timeless.” Kings of Leon is a family act, with a lot of Southern influ-

Green Day begin their “Revolution Radio Tour” in North America on March 1st. Against Me! will be supporting all dates. Green Day released its latest album, “Revolution Radio”, on October 7th. A review stated the LP “delivers in terms of music, lyrics, and an unstoppable and quintessentially Green Day energy.” Dates include: March 13 – Washington, D.C’s Verizon Center and March 25 – Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center. The Rolling Stones have returned to their blues roots for their first studio release in more than a decade. “Blue & Lonesome” will be released on December 2nd. The
The Forester Street Trio band says the album was recorded without overdubs in just three days at British Grove Studios in West London with the goal of having a spontaneous live feel. Eric Clapton, who helped popularize the blues in Britain in the 1960s plays on two of the album’s 12 tracks. Swedish indie act The Sounds is celebrating the 10-year release of its hit album, “Dying To Say This To You”, with a reunion tour. The band will be playing the album in its entirety, playing hits like “Song with a Mission,”
“Tony the Beat” and “Painted by Numbers,” along with some new stuff. Support will be provided by Zipper Club and My Jerusalem. Dates include: Philadelphia’s Union Transfer on Nov 25 and Washington DC’s 9:30 Club on Nov 28. The NFL and Pepsi announced Lady Gaga will headline the Super Bowl halftime show on February 5th at NRG Stadium in Houston. Gaga sang the national anthem at the last Super Bowl. Gaga released a new album, “Joanne”, on October 21st. The Grammy winner’s hits include “Poker Face,” ‘‘Bad Romance,” ‘‘Born This Way” and “Applause.” Bassist Cliff Williams of AC/DC announced his departure from the group, the same day the group wrapped up its “Rock or Bust” tour in Philadelphia. Williams says he’s “just ready to get off the road” and needs more time for family and to “chill out.” Williams is the fourth member to depart AC/ DC since 2014. Lead singer Brian Johnson stopped touring in March amid concern about hearing loss. Guitarist Malcolm Young retired due to health reasons in 2014 and drummer Phil Rudd left the band that same year amid drug charges. (next page...) Duane Peters & Eric

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price
This month is anniversary time again for Pennsylvania Musician Magazine, marking 35 years of serving the state’s music community! Congratulations and thanks again to Whitey and Robin Noll for providing this valuable resource for this state’s music scene, and for allowing me to continue to be a part of it! One of the biggest joys of covering the area music beat each month in PA Musician is seeing an area band or musician I write about one month later emerge into the national spotlight. Case in point —if memory serves me correctly, I first encountered aspiring area country artist Josh Gallagher during an open mic night three years ago at Mug Shotz in Gallitzin. Now based in Nashville, the Cresson native advanced to the live round on the popular NBC television talent show series The Voice. First as a member of “Team Blake” – the team headed up by country star Blake Shelton – Josh advanced on the October 17th episode of The Voice after winning a singing duel with Arizona-based singer/songwriter Blaine Long. Both performers sang on the 1983 hit song “Stranger in My House,” made popular by Ronnie Milsap, but – in a twist of fate – written by Altoona native Mike Reid. On the ensuing October 24th program, Josh lost to Sundance Head (the son of 1960’s hitmaker Roy Head), but was immediately “stolen” and added to Adam Levine’s “Team Adam,” and advances to the program’s live playoff rounds this month. Here’s hoping Josh’s run on the program continues, and perhaps results in the show’s top prize of a recording contract!
The first two times I have seen Alice Cooper in concert were during presidential election years 2000 and 2004. One of the big highlights of both concerts was the performance of Alice’s 1972 hit “Elected,” where his versions of the presidential candidates surfaced on the stage and engaged in crazy hijinks. Given the insanity of this year’s election, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see Alice when he visited Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Kovalchick Complex in late September. Opening with “Black Widow” leading into “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” Alice and his band – guitarists Ryan Roxie, Nita Strauss and Tommy Henriksen, bassist Chuck Garric and drummer Glen Sobel – mixed hits, classics and album deep cuts from throughout his career, featuring a pink toybox and plentiful stage props, characters, wardrobe changes and more. At age 68, Alice strutted and worked the stage like a youngster as he led his band on favorites like “Under My Wheels,” “Billion Dollar Babies,” “Poison,” “Only Women” and more. They also broke out some forgotten Alice gems, such as “Public Animal #9” off the

Frankenstein’s monster showed up onstage during “Be My Frankenstein,” before Alice dragged Ethyl from the freezer for “Cold Ethyl,” was placed in a straightjacket for “The Ballad of Dwight Fry,” and faced the guillotine on “I Love the Dead.” Alice and his band paid homage to three fallen musical contemporaries; saluting The Who’s Keith Moon with “Pinball Wizard”, David Bowie on “Sufragette City,” and Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister on “Ace of Spades.” Bubbles and confetti flew during the set-ending pair of “I’m 18” and “School’s Out.” When the audience demanded the encore, Alice made his presidential campaign pitch with his hit “Elected,” before welcoming both main party candidates on the stage, where they slapped and spanked each other, embraced, and wrestled each other away from the stage. The Professor continued.... manship connected with fans young and old, and it was an honor to get to meet and shake hands with him during the post-concert meet-and-greet. The region’s outdoor festival season drew to a close in recent weeks with a number of popular annual events. The area fair season wrapped up in late September with the annual Harmony Grange Fair near Westover. I attended during Thursday evening’s festivities to enjoy the final fair food of the season and variety rock’n’roll with The Boomers. Now the trio of singer/bassist Bob Helbig, guitarist Dave Nichols and drummer John Stevens, The Boomers mixed up rock’n’roll hits spanning from the 1950’s through 1980’s, touching on a wide spectrum of sounds. Bob displayed a great voice this night, showing vocal range and enthusiasm as he belted out renditions of Elvis Presley’s “Little Sister,” Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” the pairing of the Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)” with CCR’s “Green River” and more. The Boomers were instrumentally tight, and Dave showed abundant guitar chops on instrumentals like Booker T & the MG’s “Green Onions,” Santo & Johnny’s “Sleepwalk” and more. Ebensburg again celebrated the spud in late September with this year’s edition of Potatofest. As visitors enjoyed a multitude of potato-based foods, arts and crafts vendors, wine-tasting and children’s activities, live music again took place on four different stages. The first performance I witnessed after my arrival was Pittsburgh’s The Commonheart, displaying fiery rock’n’soul sounds at the Main Tent stage. Ten members strong including two-piece brass section, The Commonheart energized the large crowd of onlookers and passers-by with a lively, soul-rooted sound, fronted by the boisterous fire-andbrimstone singing style of Clinton Clegg. The group mixed funk-driven remakes with original songs, including several from their forthcoming album “Grown”, due out later this month. My favorite highlight was The Commonheart’s surging rendition of Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Let ‘Em In.” I next saw the Jenkins Brothers Band, performing folk and bluegrass sounds at the Penn Eben Park gazebo stage. This trio displayed strong vocal harmonies as they did numbers from Old Crow Medicine Show, Avery Brothers and more. I then caught part of Night Train’s set at the Main Tent stage; as guitarists Jerry and Jesse Carnevali, bassist Jared Carnevali and drummer Tim performed classic rock favorites from Bon Jovi, Journey, CCR and more. My Potatofest experience finished with local favorites Never Enough at the South Center stage. Lead singer Stacy Feighner, guitarist/singer Tony Feighner, bassist/singer Lou Nagy and drummer/singer Christi Roddy helped cap the celebration of the spud with their lively mix of rock, pop and country favorites, doing tunes from Elle King, Charlie Daniels, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, K.T. Tunstall, Queen, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gretchen Wilson, Guns N’Roses, Pat Benatar and more.
The first weekend of October found me checking out entertainment at the 52nd annual Bedford Fall Foliage Festival. During the Festival’s first Saturday, I caught two performances, starting with West Virginia-based roots rock’n’rollers Ryan Cain and the Ables on the Gazebo stage. According to group namesake, singer, guitarist and pianist Ryan Cain, the group strives to capture the original sound and style of his dad’s record collection. Ryan, acoustic guitarist Evan Jones, upright bassist Brandon Elmore and drummer Gary Hamrick provided an early rock’n’roll party and history lesson as they performed authentic-sounding hits from Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Horton, Elvis and more, plus several roots-flavored orig-
Never Enough inal songs as well. Later on the River stage, Pittsburgh’s Jimmy Adler Band cut loose with fast-firing original blues, including tunes from Jimmy’s latest CD, “Grease Alley”. Jimmy’s clean, fluid guitar/slide work and sassy vocal style were front and center as he led his group on numbers such as the CD title song “Grease Alley,” “Drank Too Much,” “I Can’t Wait” and more. I returned on Sunday to see Harrisburg’s Smokin’ Gunnz as they rocked the Gazebo stage. Singer/drummer Robert Morris, guitarists Chris Dellaporta and Mike Brady, and bassist Rich Marko proudly celebrated southern rock, with an emphasis on Lynyrd Skynyrd. They triggered dancing and cheers with multiple Skynyrd classics such as “That Smell,” “Saturday Night Special,” “Don’t Ask Me No Questions,” “Gimme Three Steps,” their show closer
Brian Cupples “Simple Man” and more, along with tunes from Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels Band, Blackberry Smoke, the Eagles, Mountain, original songs and more. Smokin’ Gunnz were rock solid and tight, with both guitarists showcasing excellent solo work and blending on dual and harmony guitar leads. The following weekend featured another area fall festival favorite, Alexandria’s annual Hartslog Day celebration. Rainy conditions did not thwart the day’s music; I arrived as local favorite Anita Roseborough performed. Displaying a smooth voice and a gentle touch on guitar, Anita did a variety of folk-geared favorites from names such as Hank Williams, Curtis Mayfield, James Taylor, Michael Johnson, Dixie Chicks, Nanci Griffith and more – including her established crowd-pleasing rendition of John Denver’s “Grandma’s Feather Bed.” Following Anita was Mifflin County’s Unusual Suspects String Band, performing their variety of folk, bluegrass and early country favorites. Singer, banjo player and walking encyclopedia of bluegrass knowledge R.B. Powell, upright bassist/singer Bridget Allen and guitarist/fiddler Charlie Arentz mixed traditional numbers from Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Jimmie Davis, Woody Guthrie and more, with touches of humor thrown in. Bridget provided two key highlights; singing her original song “Mama’s Wedding Ring,” and crooning her bi-lingual rendition of Freddy Fender’s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” Next was Take Note, a Huntingdon-based women’s choral group, before the Backyard Rockers closed out the day with acoustic classic rock, folk, blues and country favorites. That same weekend, I ventured south of the Mason-Dixon line to catch the second day of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia’s 42nd annual Apple Butter Festival, and my first look at Marv Ashby & High Octane. Namesake Marv Ashby sings and plays guitar, with Doug continued on page 22....

The Professor continued.... Moats on upright bass and vocals, 16-year-old Jack VanOrden on banjo, and Larry Crawford on fiddle. The group demonstrated deft musicianship and bright harmonies as they mixed original songs with traditional bluegrass, folk and country songs, fiddle tunes and more. They introduced several songs from their forthcoming new album, “West Virginia”, which will be released in January. They also offered their distinctive bluegrass takes on such numbers as Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere,” Jimmy Martin’s “Hit Parade of Love,” “Rocky Top,” “I Know You Rider” and more. I enjoyed fall foliage, food and music during the Friday leg of last month’s 57th annual Fort Ligonier Days Festival in Ligonier. On the gazebo Bandstand stage I first saw Gashouse Annie in action. Accompanied this day by Bobby Martin on electric guitar, namesake Shirley “Gashouse Annie” Dragovich displayed a vibrant, hearty singing voice on a variety of acoustic blues, rock and country numbers; including songs from Stevie Ray
John Stevens of The Boomers
Vaughan, Harry Belafonte, CCR, The Animals, Lee Greenwood and more. Next was my first look at local Ligonier-based foursome Second Wind. Named because most of the members are past age 55 and catching their ‘second wind,’ this group – lead singer/guitarist Richard Bell, guitarist/fiddle player/singer Rich Howard (who I hadn’t seen since his prior stint in Henwae), bassist Rich Kost and drummer Rich Resslar – specialized in southern and classic rock, with a touch of country. Second Wind fired up the crowd with numbers from the Outlaws, Pure Prairie League, Allman Brothers, Kenny Chesney, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Alabama and others. They broke out a couple of tunes I hadn’t heard in ages from the Henry Paul Band, “So Long” and “Grey Ghost.” Their performance built steam as it progressed, leading to the hot homestretch when Rich Howard switched from guitar to fiddle, and displayed amazing and fiery fiddling skills on Alabama’s “Mountain Music,” Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel,” Dropkick Murphys’ “Shipping Up to Boston,” the Charlie Daniels double-shot of “South’s Gonna Do It Again” and “Devil Went Down to Georgia,” and for the finale, “Orange Blossom Special,” which left fans loudly cheering more! Capping the festival’s music this day was Pittsburgh favorite Jeff Jimerson – who often sings the National Anthem before Pittsburgh Penguins home hockey games – and his band Airborne. Wielding bass, Jeff displayed a clear, powerful and high-ranging voice, flanked by keyboardist/singer Herb Schweitzer, guitarist Kelly Jones and drummer/singer Dave Marion. Jeff and Airborne quickly fired up a street dance party on Ligonier’s downtown diamond with a variety of rock, pop and country favorites; doing numbers from Tom Petty, Journey, Luke Bryan, the Temptations, Wild Cherry, Journey, Walk the Moon, Kenny Loggins and many more. When the crowd demanded an encore, Jeff first responded with his familiar solo rendition of “The Star Spangled Ban-
ner,” before he and Airborne closed out the party with the Beatles “I Saw Her Standing There.” After the close of Fort Ligonier Days Festival activities for this day, I walked down the street to the nearby Wicked Googly, where the Derek Woods Band was performing. I enjoyed their colorful blend of original and classic jam, rock and funk stylings, which kept the packed venue happy during their two sets. Derek on lead vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica, Joshua Carns on lead guitar, George Hilf on keys, bassist Chris Schaney and drummer/singer Justin Landers cut loose and delivered fun jam adventures on songs from their forthcoming “Taste” EP, as well as classics from the Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, Kool & the Gang, Marshall Tucker Band, Stevie Wonder and more. This group’s musicianship was strong, and they frequently rode their songs to heated homestretches, displayed especially on their one-two punch finale of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” into Bobby Bland’s “Turn on Your Love Light”, which reached a heated crescendo to end their performance. Glutton for live music this day, I then left Ligonier and headed over the mountain to Johnstown to see last month’s PA Musician cover feature artists, Nate Myers & the Aces, at Slammin’ Sams. As expected, this show was a lot of fun, as Nate on vocals and harmonica, guitarist Jimmi Sexton, bassist Pete Netznik and drummer Kenny Ross grooved with a blend of R&B, soul, funk, blues and even an old-school rap/hip-hop medley. Nate frequently wailed on the harmonica, and demonstrated his lung capacity and stamina by holding out a high note for nearly 40 seconds on a number! I also liked the group’s reggae-flavored take on Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Nate’s sassy spin on Johnny Cash’s “One Piece at a Time” and more. The Slammin’ Sams crowd danced and cheered approval, boding well for more Nate Myers continued on page 23....

November, 2016
Once in a while, I encounter the occasion where a rising area band or artist arrives in a new venue and totally dominates the situation, winning over a new audience and marking their convincing arrival on the area music scene. I think I witnessed such a situation last month when Zach Wade & the Good Grief came, saw and conquered a Friday night audience at McGarvey’s. Now the roster of namesake Zach Wade on acoustic guitar and vocals, Rogan Allen on lead guitar, Devin Pierce on bass and Keegan Allen on drums, Zach Wade & the Good Grief steadily drew more and more of the crowd to the front of the stage with their mixture of catchy original rock/pop numbers and select covers. The connection between band and crowd escalated as the night progressed, so by the last set a major party was under way! The party reached its zenith when guest vocalist Warren Peace joined the group onstage to help front on versions of Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” Outkast’s “Hey Ya” and Rusted Root’s “Send Me on My Way” to end the night. At least based on this night, Zach Wade & the Good Grief’s

The Professor continued.... visits to the Flood City in the months ahead. For fans of the progressive and detailed sides of the rock/pop spectrum, there’s Cone Of Silence, who I again had the pleasure of witnessing in late September at Zeno’s in State College. Singer/guitarist Steve Christensen, bassist/singer James Miller, keyboardist/singer Liz Grove and drummer John Lynch demonstrated total precision and detail as they did numbers from the catalogs of Steely Dan, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes and more! I arrived toward the end of their first set as they were doing an incredible version of Kansas’ “Song for America.” Their latter set featured guest saxophone player Tom Gallagher performing on Steely Dan’s “Doctor Wu” and “Bodhisattva,” plus David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” which prompted actual dance floor action. Also getting dancers going were versions of the Clash’s “Rock the Casbah” and the Police’s “Synchronicity II.” Cone Of Silence also pulled out Pink Floyd’s “Breathe,” some early Jethro Tull numbers including “Aqualung,” and the tune I most eagerly awaited this night, their night-ending rendition of Yes’ “Starship Trooper.” This group’s musicianship and vocal harmonies were top notch, and frequently left the audience in awe with jaws hanging toward the floor! If you like complete musical detail and finesse, see Cone Of Silence when they return to Zeno’s stage on November 15th.
melodies with soaring vocals, and showcased numbers from their soon-to-be-recorded first album. Heavy rock converged on 30 Something in late September, with the triple-bill of Doctor Smoke, Horseburner and Naildriver. Sans bassist Scott Bush this night, Naildriver nonetheless launched the night on a ferocious tone, introducing newer thrashing original songs such as “The Ghost of Me,” “Knifework” and “Sinking Ship.” From West Virginia, Horseburner drilled heavy, intense original rock and metal rooted in the doom-rock tradition of Black Sabbath. Singer/guitarist Jack Thomas, guitarist Zach Kaufman, bassist Robert Howard and drummer Adam Nohe levied thundering assaults from their CD “Dead Seeds, Barren Soil.” Closing the night, eastern Ohio’s Doctor Smoke generated a wall of sound with their driving brand of hard rock and metal. Singer/guitarist Matt Tluchowski, lead guitarist Steve Lehocky, new bassist Kathryn Flesher and drummer Cody Cooke generated heavy grooves as they mixed new and oldZach Wade & the Good Grief w/ guest Warren Peace er original numbers. Among their songs this
stock continues to rise on area stages; if you haven’t seen them yet, make plans to do so soon! I caught two-thirds of a hard-rocking triple-bill at McGarvey’s last month. One Adam 12 had already performed before my arrival; among their songs was a newly-recorded number, “Bullet Proof.” Next was my first look at Pittsburgh-based trio the Hedonism Bots. Named after a minor character from the animated TV series Futurama, the Hedonism Bots – singer/guitarist/keyboardist Andrew Riegner, bassist Dan Christ and drummer Jordan Zankey – performed a quarky brand of indie rock, mixing elements of ska, punk, and spoken word lyrics, and even incorporating a snippet of Henry Mancini’s “Baby Elephant Walk” into one of their tunes! The group performed a selection of original songs off their debut CD “Crashin’ the Party”, along with their own take on White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army,” a percussion jam and more. Altoona-based heavy-hitters Fyre closed out the bill with a strong set of their traditional-flavored original heavy metal. Singer Matt Stoyanoff, lead guitarist Zach Kensinger, rhythm guitarist Sean Stringer, bassist Joe Earnest and drummer Brent Crist genTodd Dale, Jamie Kmett & Scott Botteicher of Naildriver erated powerful, detailed

night were several from their CD “The Witching Hour”, including “The Seeker” and “Faces in the Fog.” I visited Steele’s Tavern near Hopewell for the first time ever last month, and caught Bedford party rockers Fueled By Ignorance (F.B.I.) in action. Since the last time I saw them, F.B.I. has added a second singer, Jerrichah, which now gives the group the capability to do female-fronted rock and dance hits. Jerrichah, lead singer Ronnie Sheirer, guitarists/bassists Travis Ickes and continued on page 24....

The Professor continued.... Dustin Lybarger, and drummer Kevin Easter mixed it up with lots of classics, some new tunes, funk and dance hits too. Their song list this night spanned from George Thorogood’s “I Drink Alone” to 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” from Hank Williams Jr.’s “Family Tradition” to Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” Cameo’s “Word Up” to AC/DC’s “TNT” and more. F.B.I. quickly had folks up and dancing, and the dance floor stayed busy for the duration. Guest drummer Zac Grace (of Chris Woodward & Shindiggin’) took over the beats for Poison’s “Talk Dirty to Me” and Johnny Cash’s “Cocaine Blues.” Simple Gifts returned to Penn State Altoona to offer two performances in late September. I caught their evening appearance at the campus’ Port Sky Cafe. Playing an assortment of folk instruments including guitar, fiddles, banjo, mandolin, psalteries, dulcimer and even
Simple Gifts spoons, Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon demonstrated folk sounds from various parts of the United States and around the globe. They performed selections from Finland, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Romania and more. For one of their highlights during their latter set, Karen taught the audience how to play the spoons, and then let the audience try their new spoon talents during two songs. Opening earlier this summer in downtown Altoona, Railroad City Brewing Company offers a tasty locally-brewed beer selection and acoustic-geared live music. In recent weeks I saw two performers. Matt Burns mixed up a variety of tunes during his appearance early last month, spanning the 1980s to present. Matt’s rapid fire song selection this night included tunes from Gin Blossoms, Pearl Jam, REM, the Cars, Live, Black Keys, Hank Williams III, Bryan Adams, Fountains Of Wayne, Collective Soul, Presidents Of The United States Of America, Hootie & the Blowfish, Simple Minds and more. And during his recent performance, Bill Ferrell offered a unique blend of select classics and original instrumentals. Bill demonstrated impressive fingerstyle guitar techniques on compositions such as “Tomahawk” and others, and his cover selection included tunes not often heard on area stages such as Mason Williams’ “Classical Gas,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Rosalita,” Little Feat’s “Willin’” and more. I also checked in with Denny Pompa in late September as he entertained an early evening bar audience at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub. Strumming acoustic guitar and singing, Denny did a wide variety of hits and classics, including numerous tunes I don’t often hear on area stages. He did favorites from Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan and others; plus broke out renditions of Jay Ferguson’s “Thunder Island,” Jonathan Edwards’ “Sunshine,” Jim Croce’s “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” and Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright.” Denny also did two of his own tunes, “Lumber and Steel” and “Wound24
ed.” Denny sang with a calm, confident delivery, and his presentation was warm and friendly. Other performers I saw in recent weeks included Ember’s Fall as they brought blistering heavy metal to McGarvey’s, and Flight 19 generating the dance party at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge. News and notes…This year’s annual Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch will take place on Nov. 19 at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society, raising funds and awareness for Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch program; performers at this year’s event include The Sitch, The Band OZ, Strings Radio, the Backyard Rockers, Stone Bridge Blues Band, Time with Donny Burns, The Rattlers, This Albatross, R2B2, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, The Chrome Hearts and Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors…A benefit concert for a popular area entertainer and dance deejay Jeff Skidmore, DJ Skiddy, will happen on Nov. 6 at Eldolyn Terrace in Altoona, to raise funds toward expenses as he undergoes a kidney transplant later this month; bands donating their talents this day include the BA Brawlers, Bone Jacked, This Albatross and 100 Proof…One of Altoona’s longest-running live music venues and eateries, Pellegrine’s, closed its doors late last month after 52 years in business…Bellefonte-based punk rockers Subject to Change have announced their farewell from the area music scene… Huntingdon-based duo Strait & Miller (Chris Strait and Dylan Miller) have announced that they are separating for the time being to pursue other music-related projects…Teazed has added two more

CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND “TRINKETS & TIME TRAVELERS”
(no label) On their 2009 debut album, “I”, Altoona’s Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band went for the jugular and warned listeners of the evils of corporate media, government surveillance and other nefarious behaviors of societal and world power-brokers. By contrast, the group’s second album, 2011’s “Tupelo Tree”, presented a more laid-back approach musically and lyrically, providing listeners solace from the storm. But on the group’s new album, “Trinkets & Time Travelers”, Vipond and his cast again observe the dangers of media mind control, paranoia over governmental intrusions and a media world gone mad, while reminding listeners that they control their own destiny and fulfillment. Through the disc’s ten tracks, the group crafts invigorating and inventive funk-laden hooks and grooves, while demonstrating tasteful arrangements and stunning musicality. Highlights are everywhere, starting with the disco-beat disc-opener “Everybody Else” with its bright vibe and message of being comfortable in one’s own skin. With its rollicking, tropical-flavored rhythm, “Lonely Cells” offers a similar positive theme of finding ourselves, while the more gradual “Love Is Loud” proclaims that love conquers all. But the group is wary about today’s bizarre, violent, media circus-driven world on “Weird Angry Hard,” expresses paranoia over the intrusive ‘government man’ on “Never Again,” and encourages listeners to think for themselves while ignoring social media pundits on “Armchair Preachers.” The disc closes with “Smile,” a stripped-down ode to life’s journey, crooned by Vipond along a simple four-note progression. Performing on several instruments, Vipond sings his poetic words with a soulful style and cadence that makes the messages connect. C’Jay Castello shines with frequently dazzling and flavorful lead guitar solos, while keyboardist Nathan Beatty colors and complements the songs with tasteful fills and nuances. Driving the music are the inventive rhythms and rudiments of drummer Randy Servello and newly-acquired bass man Bill Smith. Recorded and produced by the band, “Trinkets & Time Travelers” sounds continually vibrant and balanced, with all components shining through clearly, and occasional vocal effects providing accent and emphasis. This group’s artistry seems to grow with each release – “Trinkets & Time Travelers” offers a colorful, compelling listen as Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band stretch their musical boundaries while encouraging listeners to think. (The CD can be purchased through the website www.chrisvipond.com.)
the Wren’s debut album, “Friend of Failure”, introduces a sound rooted in Americana, blending elements of folk, country and blues over nine tracks. Immediately obvious is the group’s knack for alluring arrangements, catchy melodic and lyrical hooks. NattyLou’s emotion-packed voice is front and center in the mix, as she expresses themes of soul-searching, self-realization, atonement and growth. Her words tackle dark corners of the soul, addressing past mistakes, plus love lost and squandered. The sullen disc-opener “Nobody Wins” accepts responsibility for things gone wrong and abandons the broken relationship blame game. The minor-key ode “Sinking” observes a soul descending into despair, while the slow ballad “One Stone” attempts the first step to rebuild something damaged. Other songs are more hopeful in tone; the strippeddown guitar and voice number “The Valley” contemplates change and embracing new frontiers, while the stern bluesy ballad “All or Nothing” seeks meaning and purpose in life’s directions. The album’s centerpiece, though, is the brisk and scornful “Lost and Found,” as NattyLou vents relationship vitriol, building to a stormy homestretch where Tutwiler’s guitar and slidework take center stage, and Rattie and Hart’s driving rhythms go for broke. The performances are vibrant and heartfelt, as all four band members invest heart and soul into each piece. Recorded with the intention of capturing a spontaneous, live feel, “Friend of Failure” sounds authentic and in-your-face, yet smooth and accomplished as each instrumental and vocal component is tastefully executed and supports the total song. “Friend of Failure” is a strong debut by four musicians who understand their turf. Raven and the Wren confront dark corners of the soul and seek truth from the encounters, making this album a compelling listen. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.ravenandthewren.com.)

Based in State College, Raven and The Wren officially came together early last year, stemming from the acoustic collaboration of singer NattyLou Race and guitarist Jason “Junior” Tutwiler, and expanding to include Jason’s former Rustlanders cohort Chris Rattie on drums, and Brooklyn transplant Bob Hart on bass. Raven and November, 2016
A Dawn Becoming, From the Depths and Scathe. Their debut CD, “Cessation”, introduces a terse, volatile brand of scathing metalcore over its 13 tracks. Ember’s Fall’s sound is defined by hyperactive, battering rhythms, swarming guitar riffs and solos, and the half-sung, halfsnarled vocal maelstrom of frontman Dennis Gee. The song arrangements are detailed, and informed with elements of classical and even jazz. Mostly written by Gee, the lyrics explore themes of hope and despair, and healing the soul and the world. The dark piano title track prelude, “Cessation,” leads into the complex assault “Logan’s Fire,” featuring frequent tempo shifts, layered guitars and effects. The rampaging “The Choice” considers charity and helping one’s fellow man, while “Loyalty” addresses the current corrupt state of the world and challenges the listener to do something about it. Ember’s Fall profiles their own musical journey on “A New Beginning,” and explores inner insecurities on the introspective “A Ghost Immortal.” The performances are intense and full-throttle, with beats and guitars pummeling nonstop. Lead guitarist Jairo Cerritos demonstrates technical speed and skill with his solo work, and Dennis maintains a brutal vocal intensity throughout. Recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by John Burke at Vibe Studios in Cleveland, “Cessation” sounds clean, full and raw, with Ember’s Fall able to display their full metalcore ferocity. For fans of brute-force, modern metal and metalcore, Ember’s Fall delivers the goods with “Cessation”, an album that sternly sets the foundation of what this group is about, while revealing nuances and possibilities for their future development. Across the Desk continued.... me everyday to keep on, keeping on; we just wouldn’t be. We need each other and I am so very thankful for each and everyone of my helpers in this life journey. I have a great deal of respect for musicians and people in this industry. They are people that are not only talented in so many areas but they are gifted with the desire to do and be more than just the status quo. Many juggle various jobs to be able to perform their music and do what they are gifted to do. While some get rich and famous and get paid well for their talents, others (the have nots) plug along and still get to experience the joy of sharing their talent with others but struggle to make ends meet. But they keep on, keeping on. An advertiser that doesn’t advertise every month but at least twice a year is Bee3Vintage.They put on The Great
