ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
Loving the beautiful rain today. At first I was a little sad to see summer go but as we have had some great weather the past few weeks the changing of the seasons is growing on me. It is a beautiful time of year and with this rain the grass is turning bright green once again. I was looking through some old files and came across the ad below. I can’t believe it was 15 years ago that I designed this particular ad. Emily Toybox is still going strong and I believe Fuel is as well only with different membeers. Green Eggs has reunited and they are play-
ing the area once again. November we begin our 35th year of producing the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. We were told it wouldn’t last and if I was a “material girl” it wouldn’t have lasted but we manage to pay the bills eventually and we have food to eat, and a roof over our heads. We have so much to be thankful for. Whitey turned 75 this past June and he’s been cancer free for 5 years WOOHOO! Yes we are blessed. I am so very thankful to work from my home. This past year I was able to purchase a new computer and it sure makes putting the paper together a lot easier. There is so much going on this month. I don’t know how you music lovers decide where to go but it’s great that you get out there and support all of the local talent and all the events that happening throughout the state. I was going to write about some of the events but as usual I’m running a
bit late so I have to get this article done and send the paper to the printer. The Makespace Music Fest is happening at the HMAC Century Ballroom. I hear it is a great venue to host huge events. Makespace is an art/music studio / gallery. Heather and crew are supporting the arts in downtown Harrisburg. and are rasing monies to renovate the gallery. Lower Dens has over 40,000 likes on their facebook and I was listening to some of their music, they’re quite good. This event is happening on Saturday, October 1st so I hope you go and support it. It is an All Age event and starts at 2pm. Shawan & the Wonton will be performing as well as others. Next month is our Anniversary issue and I’m hoping you decide to place an ad in our pages, it will help us as well as helping you. 35 years WOW! November is also the month to vote. I don’t particularly like the choices but then I haven’t liked the choices for awhile. The world just seems to get crazier and crazier. Of course that’s what my parents and grandparents said to me when I was young. But get out and vote, we still have the right to vote so just do it. Just want to THANK YOU ALL for reading and supporting the PA Musician the last 34 years I do appreciate you all. I LOVE YOU WHITEY!! & I DO LOVE JESUS!

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
September flew by! It’s hard to believe Summer is officially over and Fall is here. There are still plenty of festivals and music on the deck, but soon everything will move inside, so get out there and enjoy it while you can. We’ve been blessed with some amazing weather this month, but I have to admit, I missed snuggling up with blankets and wearing hoodies. September was my birthday month, and I had a great month celebrating with my family and friends. Thanks to everyone who took the time out of their lives to wish me a Happy Birthday. It truly was a great day! This article starts back on my birthday. Mom was out delivering the September issue and she stopped in to visit, so we decided to head over to see Crossroads Duo playing at St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown. Sterling Koch and Jack Kulp are a great duo who can easily provide a full night of entertainment. They play plenty of your favorite cover tunes, but also have a great array of original music too. Every time I’ve seen them they are always playing new songs that have their audience’s full attention. We stuck around til the end of the night and it was awesome to see and hear them asking for requests and easily being able to play the requested songs. They are definitely a well-rounded and very experienced duo. You can check out their schedule in this issue and see where they are performing next. They have a full schedule with gigs all over the midstate and beyond. The next night I swung by Double K to see Booby Trap. I haven’t seen these guys for a while, and I didn’t have much time, but it was great to see the dance floor hopping, and Booby Trap doing what they do best, getting people up and shaking their booty! These guys have been playing together for quite some time and have quite a bit of experience under their belts. They know all of the great rock n’ roll songs to get the crowd up and moving. They also have some very funny and very catchy originals that you are sure to love. Booby Trap plays Double K
pretty regularly, keep your eye on Double K’s schedule and get out there and get stuck in their Booby Trap. The following weekend I headed back to Double K for Steel. It was bike week in Ocean City and I knew quite a few people who were down at bike week, but that didn’t stop the crowd from coming to the Double K, it was like we had our very own bike week! It was packed as usual with plenty of people on the dance floor. One of my personal favorites that Steel covers is “Slow Ride” by Foghat. Who doesn’t want to take a slow ride and take it easy… I know I do! I love getting the opportunity to just enjoy a full night of Steel, hanging with the whole Steel Family, dancing and just having a great night with great friends. The next night the boys were away at camp so I got the opportunity to escape early and check out a new venue, The Greystone Public House. It is located pretty much on the corner of Colonial Road and Route 39 between Harrisburg and Linglestown. All I can say is WOW! They really did an amazing job at remodeling the building. I don’t know the history of the building, but you can tell just by looking at it, there must be a lot of history in its
walls. Scott Peoples was playing his solo acoustic act in the bar area. My friends Patty and Sabrina joined me for dinner and amazing dessert. (I highly suggest the Blueberry Cobbler!) Scott started playing as some nice soft background music, but before too long he had the bar singing along and “helping” with the choruses. Scott plays plenty of your favorite music that kept people bopping in their bar stools all night long. Scott gets tricky and plays with a loop machine that sometimes makes you take a double take that he’s up there playing with a full band. continued on page 10...

My night wasn’t over yet, next I zoomed on down to The Field House for Fierce. It was my first time catching them with their new lead singer, Tina Marie. I saw Tina Marie sing years ago in a band called Deja’ Vudoo. One thing for sure is that girl can SING! She has an amazing set of pipes that fit in beautifully with Fierce’s type of music. It’s always cool to see bands be able to change band members and never miss a beat. It really shows you Fierce’s professionalism. It was great to see their fans not missing a beat either still filling up the dance floor and having a good time with Fierce. October 29th they will be playing at the “Fierceist” Halloween Party in Lancaster at 551 West, starting at 9pm. It’s sure to be a spooktacular good time. Put on your costume and get out there and enjoy a wild night out on the town. My last and final stop of the month was back at Double

Out & About continued.... along! LCD definitely knows how to bring a party to any venue they are playing at. Check them out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Between celebrating my birthday and my son, Zack’s 14th birthday I didn’t get out very much this month. Plus my part time/day job has been very demanding, being more of a full time job with overtime, so when you have to wake up at 6am on Fridays and Saturdays, and you have no time for a nap, it makes rockin’ the night away even more difficult. I’m hoping things calm down in the month of October, but we’ll have to wait and see! Did you all hear the news that Take 147 is BACK!! They will only be playing a few very special shows a year, so keep your eyes out so you don’t miss one. Their first show back is at Tubby’s in Duncannon on October 28th. It’s a super special Halloween Costume Party with Frayed Nott warming up the stage!! So bring out the craziness and jump on their train! I have to admit, I’m just a tiny bit excited for their show. On to a little side note, I’ve decided to stop drinking alcohol. I know a lot of people don’t think I should announce this, but to me it’s important. I also know I have amazing friends that will support my decision and help me stick to my guns. I’ve already had people say to me, “I never saw you out of control..” I guess that’s probably one of my main reasons for quitting, plus a lot of others. But I was out of control, a lot! I was just really good at hiding it, or so I thought. I used to only be a social drinker and I would never have alcohol at home, but that changed a long time ago. Addiction is a horrible thing and there WAS always a reason to drink: rough day, watching TV, birthdays, cleaning the kitchen, whatever! An excuse is an excuse, and I’m tired of making them. I have to prove to myself that ultimately I have control over my actions, and I can say NO to alcohol. You will still see me Out & About, rockin’ right along with ya, it will just be with a water, or maybe a soda. Please don’t hesitate to drink around me, I’ve already discovered that people watching while sober is much more fun! Plus, if you need a ride home at the end of the night you can count on me! The Central PA Friends of Jazz present theirr second Fall Concert on October 9th featuring the critically acclaimed tenor saxophonist from New York City - Harry Allen and the wonderful rising star vocalist Hilary Gardner will appear as a guest with Harry’s ensemble. An authentic master of the jazz saxophone tradition, Harry is right at home with the timeless music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Duke Ellington. His style of playing recaptures the essence of the ultra cool sound and the easy, lyrical phrasing of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims. Joining Harry & Hilary are three great musicians from the NYC jazz scene - Rossano Sporteillo: piano; Joel Forbes: bass & Kevin Kanner: drums. Nate Myers & the Aces are a well-established band throughout the mid-state and beyond. They’ve been playing together in some form for nearly 15 years. Nate Myers is the leader of the group, singing and blowing on his harmonica. His charisma on stage is unlike any other musician in the area. He quickly reels you in with his amazing voice, and his smile is extremely contagious.
coffee houses and intimate clubs. They can also perform material appropriate for a family-friendly show, as well as a late night bar room crowd. They are able to perform a full night of original music or cover songs, or a combination of both. They’ve released six albums as a band, but it’s been way too long since their latest release, “It’s My Music”, way back in 2013. One song from this album, “Her Hand My Hand” was a finalist for Big City Blues Magazine’s “Coolest Blues Song of 2014”. Now that they got the band solid again, they are hoping to be recording again very soon. Nate Myers & the Aces are amazing story tellers and entertainers. Any of their listeners can easily relate to the lyrics of their original songs and start moving and grooving to their music. Even though they do an amazing job at going with the flow and improvising, they would personally like to get their set a little tighter and pick things up on the professional level. Even though they will be fine tuning their music, I’m sure they will still easily provide a loose, casual atmosphere for their fans. At every show I’ve been to I’ve been able to just relax and have a good time. It’s almost impossible to leave one of their shows without a big smile on my face. Nate Myers & the Aces have been blessed lately to be playing nearly every weekend, and even some nights
Pete Pete Netznik has been playing along-side Nate since the beginning. Regularly as part of the “Aces” Pete plays bass, but he can also whip out the acoustic guitar so they can play duo and trio shows as well. Nate Myers & the Aces have undergone some member changes in the last few years, but they are thrilled to have a solid foursome again. Kenny “Ross” Mettam is holding the backline together on drums and vocals. Kenny has been back there banging the beat out for the past year. He has shared the stage with Nate on several occasions with different projects, but they are both thrilled to be working together permanently. Jimmi Sexton has the chops on the lead guitar, plus he sings with his own special style and flare, often harmonizing with Nate. Jimmi has also filled in and played with Nate in different projects, and Nate loves to have Jimmi on the stage sharing the vocal responsibilities, his range is unbelievable. InNate Myers & the Aces’ 15 years, they’ve played over a thousand shows in front of a variety of crowds. They’ve opened up for quite a few national acts: Cheap Trick, Kansas, Johnny Winter, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and most recently Styx, just to name a few. When they opened for Styx at Spyglass Ridge Winery they were a little nervous they were going to be booed off the stage since they are such complete different artists, but they were thrilled that not only didn’t they get booed, people were even up dancing and grooving to the music. That is a great example of how flexible Nate Myers & the Aces are. They play a great mix of all of America’s favorite genres of music: blues, funk, hip hop, rockabilly and country. Plus, they mix and mash it all together to create a special sound that only Nate Myers & the Aces can create. They can also adapt to any type of show, they’ve played bigger festivals in front of thousands, regular club dates, university shows, private parties, October, 2016
Jimmi during the week. They not only perform as the full Nate Myers & the Aces, but Nate also has The Duo act which he sometimes plays with Tom Rosencrans. The Duo show consists of guitar/banjo and harmonica and obviously with vocals too. When Tom isn’t available, Pete will pick up the acoustic guitar and they will perform a much more stripped down version of their regular show. Another option is The Trio which is usually Nate on harmonica, Pete on guitar, and Chad Salvaggio on drums. As you can see they are ready to help you keep your crowd entertained in any situation. It’s not uncommon during this time to year to observe yellow jackets and hornets becoming more aggressive, especially around outdoor drinks and food, as worker insects go on feeding frenzies before the warm season ends. Likewise, I seem to go on a similar outdoor festival feeding frenzy during this time of year, trying to cram in every last moment of outdoor live music and fun before it all ends and heads indoors for the cold season. Case in point: Between last month’s and this month’s deadline, I attended 14 outdoor festivals, fairs and concerts! One of those events I discovered was by accident. While joyriding around York County in late August with PA Musician partner in crime Meredith Kaminek (in search of sunflower fields), we happened upon the annual Wellsville Firemen’s Carnival, and quickly discovered that Laredo was playing. Laredo features several experienced names from the Harrisburg area music scene: Dave Kelly on lead vocals and guitar, Bill Kelly on bass and vocals, Ronnie Rhoads on lead guitar and vocals, and Scott Powell on drums and vocals. Laredo performed a mix of current and classic country favorites, plus a few select rock and pop hits. They led the large carnival audience toward a fireworks display climax with tunes from Blake Shelton, Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Merle Haggard, Jamey Johnson, Lee Greenwood and more. Highlights included Ronnie’s stellar guitar solo during Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and guest singer Nate Maravich belting voice on The Heritage’s “Redneck, White Trash and Blue Collar.” Closer to my home base, the zombie apocalypse suc-

cessfully erupted in the Altoona area in late August, with the inaugural ZombieTown USA weekend showcasing a variety of zombie-themed activities, including live music. The festivities commenced on Friday evening with a zombie march to Altoona’s Railroaders Museum, where the “Dead @ Five” (ordinarily Alive @ Five) Summer Concert Series concluded for the season with Ozzy Osbourne tribute band The Land Of OZZ and Small Town Horror Show. Leading off, Small Town Horror Show won fans with their strong set of ‘zombie groove metal’ originals and select covers. Celebrating the release of their debut CD “The Dead Didn’t Die”, the Small Town Horror Show roster of singer Todd “Kiwi” McKeone, guitarist Chris Peters, bassist Eric Shumac and drummer Joey Richards fired off songs from the CD, including their current single “Let It Go,” “Fearless,” “Storm of the Century” and more. From Philadelphia, The Land Of Ozz was possibly the best Ozzy tribute I have seen so far – frontman Stephen Desko captured Blizzard of Ozz/Diary of a Madman-era Ozzy almost perfectly! And as Ozzy Osbourne introduced young guitar heroes like Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde, this group introduced 17-yearold guitar ace Matt Stanley – this youngster can seriously shred! Matt shared the stage with his dad, rhythm guitarist Mike Stanley. Paul Piccari played bass, Tommy Staszewski hit the drums, and Mike Vivial provided the keyboard undertones for the Ozzy classics. The Land Of Ozz performed many of the essentials from the Ozzy catalog over their two sets; replicating the trademark Ozzy show intro of “O’Fortuna” into “I Don’t Know,” and firing on all cylinders with versions of “Over the Mountain,” “Perry Mason,” “Tonight,” “See You on the Other Side,” “S.A.T.O.,” “Diary of a Madman,” “Mr. Crowley,” “You Can’t Stop Rock and Roll,” “Revelation Mother Earth/ Steal Away the Night,” “Flying High Again,” “Believer,” “Shot in the Dark,” “Goodbye to Romance,” “Sui-

cide Solution,” “No More Tears,” “Mama I’m Coming Home” and “Bark at the Moon.” They also did several Black Sabbath numbers, including “War Pigs,” “N.I.B.” and “Changes.” When the Railroaders Museum crowd demanded an encore, The Land Of Ozz responded with “Crazy Train,” chased by a manic read of “Paranoid” to finish the night. This was an excellent show that humans and zombies alike appreciated! The ZombieTown USA festivities resumed on Saturday with a full-fledged festival based near downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza, which included the day-long Undead Music Festival. The Backyard Rockers commenced the Undead Music Festival. Zombies had already attacked frontman/guitarist Rich Dasch, who ate harp man “Harmonica Dave” Baird’s brain, rendering him unable to perform this day. But local “Tambourine Lady” Priscilla Gati – apparently immune to zombies – tapped tambourine with the group to ward off any further zombie incursions. After Altoona mayor Matt Pacifico held a press conference to update citizens on the invasion and what to do during a zombie attack, a famous dead celebrity returned from the beyond. “Zombie Elvis” marked the return of Phil McCaulley in his popular Elvis Presley impersonator role. Decked in Elvis’ white Vegas-era jumpsuit, Phil sang many of ‘the King’s’ popular hits, honoring audience requests along the way. I also witnessed portions of performances by Nobody’s Heroes (more on them later) and Born & the Beanstalk at Heritage Plaza. I also caught several bands at Baker Mansion, performing as part of the day’s Zombie BBQ. During the afternoon, I arrived as Teazed resurrected unplugged 1980s hair band tunes. Singer Justin Dell, guitarists Jason Berardi and Jim Mincin sang and strummed numbers from continued on page 18....

The Professor continued.... Jackyl, Kix, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Kiss and more. Following them was Blossom Hollow, who mixed country and pop favorites. Singer Nicole Morgan, guitarist/singer Matt Sheedy, upright bass player Rob Berkheimer and drummer Richie Servello entertained with hits from Sheryl Crow, Taylor Swift, the Dolly Parton double-shot of “Jolene” and “Nine to Five,” Elle King’s “Ex’s and Oh’s” and more. I returned to Baker Mansion later to close out my ZombieTown adventure with new Altoona-based foursome Electrify the Farm. Featuring singers/guitarists Rue Moyer and Brian Pavlic, bassist Jarrett Bickel and drummer Rob Bonsell, Electrify the Farm mixed funk-driven original numbers and select covers. Originals like “Take a Ride with Me” (with Rob’s son Lucas assisting on drums) and “Full Tank of Gas” were upbeat and fun, and the group’s takes on songs from the Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, Bob Marley and more inspired happy dancing and hula hooping. Other Zombie BBQ performers included Asbury Lane and Backlash. Also coordinating with the ZombieTown USA event was the fourth annual Rails & Ales Brewfest, which happened across the tracks from Heritage Plaza at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. As visitors sampled craft beers from more than 80 brewers, Doubtfire and Nobody’s Heroes provided the music. Doubtfire opened with a set of punk-driven modern rock. Singer/guitarist Ty Ayers, guitarist/singer Tyler Miller, bassist/singer Scott Ciambotti and drummer Toby Hunter cranked out numbers from Good Charlotte, Counting Crows, Tom Petty, Harvey Danger, Third Eye Blind and more. Guest singer Megan Wills joined the group to sing lead on Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag/” Recently issuing their first full-length CD “One Foot on the Gas, the Other in the Grave”, Nobody’s Heroes performed songs from disc plus select roots rock
and country classics. Singer/guitarist Grant Matthews, singer/banjo player Brian Dumm, lead guitarist Lance T. Burgess, upright bassist Chris Lawson and drummer Abe Weber delivered Americana with a punk-infused wallop on CD tunes such as “Scratch My Name on the World,” “State Train,” “The Bottle,” “Moonshine” and more, as well as tunes from Johnny Cash, Johnny Rivers, Johnny Horton, Dion and others. Proceeds from Rails & Ales benefited Altoona Community Theatre. Another late August highlight was the annual St. Bernard (Parish) Homecoming Picnic in Hastings. During the final day, Sunday, I was able to enjoy live music, starting with ‘Frick & Rick’ – the duo of Rick Ramsey and Ben Frick. Rick sang and played acoustic guitar with Ben on percussion. The pair delivered a freewheeling show that gearshifted from Waylon Jennings’ “Luckenbach, Texas” to Nirvana to the Flys, Stealers Wheel, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, Elvis, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more. Although thunderstorms were forecasted, Johnstown’s Flood City Brass brought the brass without the floods to close out the festivities. This group threw a nice party of brass rock, funk and soul hits that kept people dancing through the evening. Tom Pavic and Natalie Kurchak sounded strong as they shared lead singing duties, and drummer John Homerski Jr. sang a few numbers as well. Randy Rutherford dazzled on the guitar, Luis Gonzalez III provided colorful licks on keys, Andy Heinze delivered beefy bass work, and the horn section – trumpeter Dan Perich, sax/trombone player Jim Bilitski and fill-in saxophonist Greg Maiocco – brought the bold and brassy edge. Highlights included Natalie’s soulful wail on Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” and “Respect,” Randy’s guitar fireworks on Gary Moore’s “Still Got the Blues,” and soundman Tony Malvoisin singing lead on the Boxtops’ “The Letter” and “Uptown Funk.”

I caught two shows during the homestretch of Hollidaysburg’s Thursday Downtown Live! outdoor concert series. In late August, Matt Otis & the Sound brought their fresh-sounding blend of acoustic-driven rock to The Diamond in downtown Hollidaysburg. Matt on vocals and guitar, Johnny Bayush on guitar and violin, Kent Tonkin on bass and drummer Charlie McClanahan blended together a tasty mix of original tunes and select covers, triggering dancing kids and good crowd response. The Professor continued.... Brian Baum and drummer Doug Fetter. The Chrome Hearts entertained with original songs such as “Jealous of You,” as well as favorites from Miranda Lambert, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Dixie Chicks, Dwight Yoakam and more. Labor Day weekend tradition again found me in Johnstown’s Cambria City neighborhood for this year’s edition of the Cambria City Ethnic Festival. Stretched along an eight-block length of Chestnut Street, this year’s Ethnic Festival featured plentiful food and drink, arts and crafts, yard sales, and musical entertainment on several stages. At the Holy Cross Church stage, I saw parts of performances by Three Of Hearts and Bo Moore. Featuring bassist/singer Duaine Detrick, guitarist/singer Steve Budesky and drummer/singer John Shimko, Three Of Hearts spotlighted vintage and classic rock and soul favorites. I got to hear their versions of Ted Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever” and Tommy James’ “Crystal Blue Persuasion.” Singing and slinging guitar, Bo Moore and his group – lead guitarist Jake Moore, bassist Brian Moore and drummer Brandon Martinazzi – mixed classic rock and country favorites from such names as Waylon Jennings, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Cash, Bob Seger, Wild Cherry and more. Irish-themed music happened at both the ACRP and Resurrection Parish stages. At the latter stage, I enjoyed performances by both the Michael O’Brian Band and Full Kilt. At St. Mary’s Pavilion, I witnessed portions of performances by the Rhythm Masters and Cajun Norm & the Jam Session Band. The Rhythm Masters mixed polka and classic rock/pop favorites. Featuring a cast of established Johnstown area musicians, Cajun Norm & the Jam Session Band lived up to their name, turning many of their classic rock and hit song selections into lively jam sessions that enabled the musicians to stretch out and display their talents. I ended up spending a lot of time at the Venue Of Merging Arts (VOMA) and BottleWorks stages during Cambria City Ethnic Festival weekend, where a continuous slate of music alternated between the two stages. One of the big highlights on the VOMA stage was the return of Pittsburgh’s Beauty Slap on Saturday night. Formed two years ago by several Carnegie-Mellon University music students, Beauty Slap merged electronica with a bold brass section, resulting in a dance party that enveloped the entire audience! Jake Bernsten generated the driving bass, beats and samples with his laptop and keyboard array, while trumpet player Scott Nadelson and trombonists Gabriel Colby and Hakeem Bilal provided the sassy brass on their nonstop dance groove fest. Another highlight for me was Johnstown’s Jazz Trip, who kicked off Sunday afternoon’s music. Keyboardist Joshua Ben, bassist Mark Perna and drummer Zach Bodolosky displayed top-notch musicianship and improvisational savvy on a diverse selection of jazz and pop numbers, spanning Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” to the Doors’ “Riders on the Storm.” Jazz Trip’s performance reached its pinnacle on the final number, when Joshua took off for the stratosphere with a wild keyboard interlude that emulated scat-singing effects and more! Also impressive on the VOMA stage was Pittsburgh’s Chrome Moses, who performed hard-edged blues and blues rock, Maryland’s Swampcandy with their delta-infused swamp and blues rock, and Wolves In Sheep’s Clothing with their soulful modern rock/pop sounds. Among the performers I saw inside BottleWorks was Dave DiStefano, who played a number of his original songs, including tunes from his 2010 EP, ‘LTFGD’ plus instrumentals from a soundtrack he is planning to issue next year. The Professor continued.... Ethnic Festival experience was Black Cat Moan on the BottleWorks stage, laying down some blues. Singer TK Mundok, guitarist George Byich and drummer Zach Bodolosky sounded great as they paid homage to blues masters like Robert Johnson and others. TK’s wild and soulful vocal style, George’s skills on guitar and resonator, and Zach’s jazz-infused beats blended into a smooth yet riveting sound on renditions of “Statesboro Blues,” George Gershwin’s “Summertime” and Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads Blues.” And I saw emerging Johnstown area trio The Birddoggs as they performed a set of eclectic classic rock favorites and deep cuts. Lead guitarist/singer Adam Milkovich, guitarist/singer Chris Verbano and bassist Leo Drager sounded smooth and precise as they did numbers such as Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane,” David Bowie’s “Heroes,” Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” and more. Borrowed Time was one of several groups who entertained during the Blair County Game, Fish & Forestry Association’s annual Ox Roast Festival on Labor Day weekend, held at the former Riggles Gap Sportsmen’s Association grounds. Down to the Wire and The Chrome Hearts played during the event’s first day, Sunday, while the Backyard Rockers and Borrowed Time performed on Labor Day. While visitors enjoyed ox roast sandwiches, vendors and art tables, and shooting events at various gun ranges, Borrowed Time – singers/guitarists Mike Clapper and Chad Patterson – did nice work on their blend of multiple original rock and blues songs, plus classic rock numbers from CCR, Van Morrison, Eagles, McCoys, America, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs and more to close out the festival’s music. Also on Labor Day, I caught the tail end of the annual Forest Hills Festival in St. Michael, and enjoyed polka favorites with the Johnstown area Button Box Club. Five members strong this day with four button box accordion players and a drummer, Johnstown Button Box played a mix of polkas and waltzes, stirring up occasional dancing action from the mostly senior citizen crowd in attendance. There seemed to be a polka or waltz for every purpose; some of the numbers performed included the “Slovenian Picnic Waltz,” “Silk Umbrella (Terezinka),” “Uncle Lou’s Polka,” “Cheese and Crackers Polka,” “Give Back My Heart Waltz,” “The Windber Polka,” “Caroline’s Polka,” “The Windy City Polka,” and my favorite one this day, the “Wife Got Drunk Polka.” Another recent festival highlight was last month’s fourth annual Northern Appalachian Folk Festival in Indiana. I caught much of Saturday’s musical slate, including renowned singer-songwriter Dar Williams. Accompanied by guitarist/backing singer Trevor Gordon Hall (himself an established singer, songwriter and guitarist from the Philadelphia area), Dar introduced songs from throughout her career, including some songs from her soon-tobe-released new CD. Her style evoked the folk-pop traditions of such artists as Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Dar was conversational and shared insights and humor with

the audience as she performed such songs as “Spring Street,” “Slippery Slope,” “I Am the One Who Will Remember Everything,” “The Babysitter’s Here,” “As Cool As I Am,” “The Mercy of the Fallen,” “When I Was a Boy” and more. Next was Jayke Orvis, who blended traditional roots music with a few surprises. Currently a member of the Goddamn Gallows, Jayke strummed and sang traditional songs like “Shady Grove” and Hank Williams’ “Kaw-Liga,” but also did a rootsy take on Violent Femmes’ “Country Death Song.” Southern Culture On The Skids then wrapped up the festival with their invigorating brand of ‘Americana from the wrong side of the

tracks.’ Singer/guitarist Rick Miller, bassist/singer Mary Huff and drummer Dave Hartman quickly triggered street dancing and even a juggler as they featured favorites from their song catalog. They introduced two new songs, “Freak Flag” and “Dirt Road,” from their new CD “The Electric Pinecones”; and they did crowd-pleasers such as “Liquored Up and Lacquered Down,” “’69 El Camino,” “King of the Mountain,” “House of Bamboo,” “Too Much Pork for Just One Fork,” “Banana Pudding,” “Daddy Was a Preacher and Mama Was a Go-Go Girl,” their hit song “Camel Walk,” and “8 Piece Box,” where they recruited audience members to serve and toss fried chicken to the audience. Following the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival, I headed to Indiana’s Brown Hotel for one of the festi-

former, his voice and presentation pushed the limits on every song. He, guitarist Michael Grego, bassist Brian Chalmers and drummer Colin Bronnenkant mixed up new and older original songs, including several off their latest CD “One Plug in the Wall” including the title song, “Had Enough,” “Miracle Man,” “Davenport” and more. They also mixed in a few cover selections done in their own intense style, including Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” Sponge’s “Plowed,” The Refreshments’ “Banditos,” The Who’s “Join Together” and more. Fire Department provided the perfect opportunity to do this late last month with their inaugural Fall’n Baconfest, which featured copious quantities of bacon-enhanced foodstuffs from various area eateries, beer sampling and live music from the Whiskey River Panhandlers. These days comprised of singers/guitarists Chris Verbano and Mike Giuffre, upright bassist Justin Giuffre and mandolinist Adam Milkovich, the Panhandlers performed a broad mix of Americana-geared sounds, touching on traditional folk and bluegrass, as well as punchier Americana and even electric blues. val after-parties, featuring The Hawkeyes and the Derek Woods Band. Opening, the Derek Woods Band impressed with their mostly original music blend of hard, funky, jam-laced rock; offering up catchy tunes and tasty musicianship. Namesake Derek sings, plays guitar and harmonica, backed by lead guitarist Joshua Carns, bassist Chris Schaney, keyboardist/mandolinist George Hilf and drummer Justin Landers. did get under way, it was well worth the wait, as John and his group mixed song material from throughout his long and storied career. Singing, playing keys, guitar and harmonica at the young age of 82, John led the group on versions of Otis Rush numbers such as “All Your Love” and “So Many Roads,” other early numbers such as “Streamline” and “Somebody’s Acting Like a Child,” and newer tunes from his 2015 album “Find A Way to Care” such as “Ain’t No Guarantees” and “Mother in Law Blues.” He and his band were tight and smooth, and not afraid to stretch out and have fun with their song material, enabling each musician to shine. and the Eastern Allegheny Arts Festival at Tenley Park in Everett, where I saw performances from Kenny Fetterman, young piano talent Nathaniel Maxwell, Rhyne McCormick, Matt Otis and Lizzie & the Yeehaw Gang…So many festivals, but only limited page space to recap them all! Most musicians are familiar with the scenario of a technical problem erupting at the start of a show – a feedback shriek, a cord going bad, or other malady that thwarts a clean start to the night. British blues legend John Mayall felt that pain during the start of his concert last month at State College’s State Theatre. A high-pitched feedback squeak turned into a nearly 20-minute delay that took several technicians to rectify. So what did Mayall and his band do during this delay? They did what many other bands would do – bassist Greg Rzab started telling drummer jokes, much to the chagrin of drummer Jay Davenport, who soon threw a drumstick at him. Once the show

Wolf and drummer Andrew Wolf – thundered with classic-styled original heavy metal rooted in the traditions of Judas Priest and Ronnie Dio-era Black Sabbath. Austin belted with authority and range, leading the group on songs such as “Nightmare,” “Evil Angel,” “Strong, Never Broken,” “The End” and more. From Youngstown, Ohio, Edward Be Thy Name celebrated all things Iron Maiden, doing songs from throughout the Maiden library. Singer Daniel Butch captured the vocal firepower of Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, delivering power and range in his howl. Flanking him were guitarists Darren Stalnecker and Jim Carsone, bassist Tim Frederick and drummer Shaun McConnell. Edward Be Thy Name did Iron Maiden classics such as “Aces High,” “Two Minutes to Midnight,” “The Trooper,” “Wrathchild,” “Number of the Beast,” “Tailgunner,” “Wasted Years,” “Killers,” “Powerslave,” “Hallowed Be Thy Name” and more. When the 30 Something crowd yelled for more at night’s end, Edward Be Thy Name responded with a three song encore that included “Run to the Hills” and the song “Iron Maiden,” during which the group’s ‘Eddie’ mascot surfaced and ran among the stage front crowd. On most Thursday evenings, Eric Ian Farmer performs at The Tavern in State College. During one such Thursday last month, Eric – joined by Josh Troup on drums, Eric Burkhart on guitar, RF Simón-Gomez on bass and Denise Strayer on accordion – left me awestruck with his performance! Exuding a positive and hopeful tone throughout the performance, Eric demonstrated an incredible voice that ranged from hearty to delicate, bold, clear and concise; you could feel every consonant, vowel and syllable he sang! During his show-ending version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Eric had the Tavern audience hanging on every note until his last word tapered off into total silence, before resounding applause capped the performance! Eric and company did original tunes, plus his distinctive takes on “Amazing Grace,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Prince’s “When Doves Cry” and more. The other musicians nicely supported Eric with tasteful arrangements that framed each song, and Denise’s accordion accents provided depth at just the right moments. Eric Ian Farmer is clearly in a league all his own – I highly recommend catching one of his performances and experiencing him for yourself! Other performers I saw recently included the Desperadoes (and friends) and Government Cheez during the weekly Sunday jam night at Johnstown’s Southmont Gardens…The Flannels, Xs For Eyes, Pink Belly, Old No. 7 and Greg Burley at McGarvey’s. Some say that writing a hit song is easy, that music has been dumbed down and all you need is a checklist of items, some club-based phrases, a generic beat, and away you go. Sometimes this can work, but for every depressingly generic tapper, there’s an unbelievable soul touching hit. So as to not disappoint here is my dumbed down checklist to try and help you create a hit. 1.) Let the creative chaos drive you 2.) Write for the artist, not the producer
3.) Match a song with the right singer 4.) Put humanity in your songs, people react to it 5.)Take from the past, but try and still be original 6.) Be aware of what’s trending in the world 7.) Write about love, but try and be clever about it 8.) Try not to repeat yourself Hopefully this can be a helpful start, but remember if this helps and you write that hit I want my cut!

SOURMASH – FIRST SHOT (no label) Pittsburgh’s Sourmash started out in 2010 as a salute to classic southern rock, but evolved their original rock sound and identity and developed into a favorite of motorcycle festivals and events, and has opened for national acts such as Blackberry Smoke and David Allan Coe. FIRST SHOT is Sourmash’s debut offering, a six-song EP that introduces listeners to the group’s southern-rooted, hard-rocking sound. The group offers the triple-guitar threat of Tim Henry, Nick Farine and Ken Harnish (who also plays keys); along with bassist Dave Stanoszek, drummer Matt Knapp and singer Craig Harnish (since replaced by Pat Bono). FIRST SHOT’s songs range from rowdy, whiskey-soaked rockers to deeper, more sullen numbers; honoring the traditions of southern stalwarts like Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd and .38 Special. The disc-opener “Mr. Mayhem” sets the tone as a raucous ode to a troublemaker, paced by a driving beat and roaring wall of guitar sound. “Flesh and Bone” aggressively gallops along with its message of standing alone, while the tough rocker “Hard Road” offers the reminder that life isn’t easy. The slower “I Walk Alone” is introspective and builds to a thunderous chorus, and the group crafts a power ballad epic with “You Are Everything.” And Sourmash celebrates booze-running outlaws on the brazen closer “Cheap Wine and Moonshine.” Sourmash delivers these tunes full force and no holds barred, yet retains a smooth, melodic quality throughout the disc. The guitars snarl and roar, the rhythms pound, and Craig Harnish’s voice is strong and clear. Recorded, mixed and produced by Klint Macro at Cobblesound Recording in New Kensington, FIRST SHOTsounds full, sharp and balanced, allowing this group to bare their teeth without excessive polish or gloss. FIRST SHOT is a rowdy, fun first blast that should quickly convince listeners about what Sourmash is all about, the musical equivalent to a sourmash shot that goes down smooth but provides a hearty kick. ANNE KACHLINE – PASSING PILGRIMS (no label) Anne Kachline is the bass player for longtime northeastern PA-based Christian-themed hard rock band X-Terra. Her third solo album, PASSING PILGRIMS is the culmination of a 14-year journey first started in 2002. Due to Anne’s busy schedule with X-Terra and other projects, the album was put on the backburner briefly, but was completed last year. The disc’s eight songs blend lighter-toned rock and folk flavors, resulting in a stripped-down sound that enables Anne’s straightforward voice and observational lyrics to take the spotlight. Anne’s songs address themes about coping with 24
life and the world, often underscored with Christian and Biblical themes. The disc starts on an upbeat tone with “This Is My Song,” as Anne establishes her optimistic approach to creating music. One of two songs first recorded by X-Terra, Anne’s update of “How Long” displays a Celtic folk direction as it rides a conservational theme about how mankind is abusing and destroying the planet. The expansive “Torn in Two” examines the tug of war between ambition and common sense, and the resulting hard lessons learned through that war. The sullen “Ain’t Got Nothing Blues” affirms the adage that you can’t take material wealth with you in the end. Anne also gives a folk-rock makeover to another X-Terra number, “The Runaway,” and ends the disc with two newer compositions, “Always a Song” and “Creation Song.” Anne’s distinctive voice is consistent from start to end, and displays a style reminiscent of Annie Haslam of Renaissance and classic Grace Slick. Assisting her are X-Terra bandmates Bob Kachline on drums and Bill Hunt on guitar, with additional guitar from Chuck Paul. Produced by Anne and recorded at two studios, PASSING PILGRIMS sounds basic and uncluttered, allowing the simplicity of Anne’s forthright songcraft to shine through. PASSING PILGRIMS reveals Anne Kachline’s thoughts and musical vision, and offers an honest, heartfelt snapshot of her current creative mood. (The CD can be obtained through CD Baby, www.cdbaby.com.) HOREHOUND – HOREHOUND (Blackseed Recordings) Formed last year, Pittsburgh-based fivesome Horehound offer a booming, doom-laden heavy metal sound on their self-titled CD. Bassist David Westfall and drummer J.D. Dauer generate weighty, thunderous rhythms while guitarists Brendan Parrish and Mike Altopiedi (who has since left the group) levy distortion-laden power chord walls of sound. These set the terse backdrops for singer Shy Kennedy’s soaring, siren-like vocals, providing a unique dynamic and counterpoint that will intrigue listeners through the disc’s seven tracks. Early Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus come to mind through the slower numbers, especially as both guitarists push their distortion and reverb to the limits – evidenced especially on “The Dead Don’t Lie,” which intensifies and accelerates into a feverish homestretch. The group sets the tone for their doom metal adventure on the disc-opener “World to Come,” as well as the brooding “Crowns and Thrones.” The group picks up the tempo on the rampaging “Sangreal” and the powerful “Myope.” They blend softer, shadowy textures into the more detailed “Waters of Lethe,” and provide contrasting siren and snarl voices on
the closing track “Waking Time.” Horehound’s sound is focused and direct throughout the disc, leaving no doubt about their terse musical angle. The group experiments with odd chord progressions, unorthodox melodies and varying intensities, keeping the attack sounding fresh throughout. Mixed and engineered by Matt Schor at the War Room, Horehound’s debut sounds full and thunderous, and the mix allows the group’s jagged edge to achieve full sharpness. Fans of doom and stoner metal will find plenty to celebrate on Horehound’s first salvo, a disc that sets the group’s foundation and leaves listeners anxious for a sequel. EMPIRE IN DECLINE – THE RHYTHM OF REGRET (no label) Empire In Decline formed in 2013 from the ashes of popular northeastern PA-based rock group Plus 3. Singer/guitarist Michael Evans, bassist Ron Scavone and drummer Rick Carr forge ahead with a melody-based, guitar-driven sound on their debut CD, THE RHYTHM OF REGRET. The disc’s ten tracks feature a prominent rock foundation, blending elements of modern, alternative and classic rock. The group crafts catchy song hooks, topped with lyrics mainly dealing with relationship dynamics. “The Warning” provides an uptempo start to the disc, offering a slight hint of Gin Blossoms or Goo Goo Dolls. The group also displays a prominent ‘90s alt-rock vibe on “The Empire State,” “Sometimes We Outgrow Our Friends” and “Thickened Skin.” Heavier guitars drive the more classic rock-flavored “Don’t Say Anything,” the galloping rocker “Respect the Way It Goes” and the stern disc-closer “Do I Run?” Empire In Decline dabbles with a country edge on “She Broke a Nail,” and integrates a rockabilly-surf rhythm into “Spare Me.” The performances are solid; Evans’ vocals are steady and consistent, and the instrumental execution is tight and energetic. Each song is different yet alluring, and the album flows along as a cohesive set. Produced by the group and Bret Alexander, and recorded at Alexander’s Saturation Acres recording studio, THE RHYTHM OF REGRET sounds smooth, full and polished, and lets the band’s authentic musical personality do the talking. This is a strong debut album; Empire In Decline establishes their musical turf on THE RHYTHM OF REGRET, and sets a sturdy foundation to expand upon on future offerings. Pennsylvania Musician Magazine was created in 1982 by Whitey Noll. He was working at yet another dead end sales job when his good friend and former employer, Mike Staub, told him he needed to create his own business in order to provide for his family. Whitey had sold advertising for several publications, including “The Fish Finder”, “Apartment Guide” and a few others. One day, while selling cars, he met the owner of the “Auto Locator” (who was taking pictures
of cars for his publication while driving around in a Jaguar. Whitey then knew he was going to do some kind of publication of his own design. While standing at a news stand checking out the different publications, he saw there were numerous publications to find real estate, rentals, apartments, autos, farm equipment, sporting goods, bargain papers, and guides. Hmm, what to do? Then he noticed the national magazine “Musician”. Having been a
