8 How has your travel experience influenced your music, creatively and emotionally? Can you point to specific places or cultures that have profoundly impacted your sound? Travel has played a huge role in shaping my music, both creatively and emotionally. Performing in different parts of the country and the world has shown me how music transcends language and culture. In a concert in Kochi (Kerala), the audience sang along to my Hindi hits with as much love as they did for the South Indian tracks. That concert reinforced my belief in music’s universal power. Another region that has influenced me is Turkey and the Middle East. Dubai and Istanbul are multicultural cities, and every visit to these places exposes me to new languages, sounds, and styles.

You’ve likely encountered many different musical traditions in your travels. How do you balance staying true to your artistic vision while integrating new influences from around the world?

For me, it’s all about evolution while staying authentic. Every time I travel, I discover new musical influences, whether it’s a rhythm, an instrument, or a style of singing. Rather than replicating what I hear, I try to absorb those influences and make them my own. My goal has always been to bridge the gap between Indian and global music, whether through collaborations with international artists or experimenting with

different sounds while staying true to my essence as an artist.

How do you manage the challenges of constant travel while balancing your creativity and a connection to fans?

Balancing everything can be tough, but I have learned that being intentional with my time is key. Creativity does not wait, so whether I am in a hotel room or on the road, I want to be able to capture ideas the moment inspiration strikes. Some of the best melodies come at the most unexpected times, and having my setup ensures I never miss those magic moments. At the same time, staying connected with my fans is just as important to me. I am very active on social media through AMAs, Twitter Spaces chats, or just checking in. No matter how busy things get, I always make time, because that connection truly matters. My fans are a huge part of my journey, and I love sharing it with them in real time.

to enjoying a quiet dinner with my wife Aashna, Goa is always the perfect getaway.

What are your essential travel items that you can’t do without when you’re on the move?

How do you unwind during a leisure trip with your family, and what’s your favourite destination to relax and recharge?

When I need to unwind, I love spending time in Goa. It’s one of my favourite places! There’s just something about the energy there - it’s relaxed yet vibrant and also has plenty of places where one can just be. From lazing by the pool, or the beach, and exploring some of the trendier spots,

I never travel without my headphones since I am always listening to music - whether I am working on something new or just unwinding. I also keep throat lozenges for my voice, comfy clothes for long flights, and a few personal items that make me feel at home. Sunglasses - Always! I love having a great pair on me, whether for style or to stay low-key. And I can’t go without good perfume - I need to smell and look fresh while travelling. My man bag is a lifesaver too. It holds all my essentials, so I have everything I need right within reach.

How Do Tourism Taxes Work?

e process of collecting tourism taxes is relatively straightforward. In many cases, the taxes are levied at the point of booking or check-in, making the system simple for travellers and the local authorities to manage. One of the reasons why tourism taxes have gained traction is their exibility. ese fees can be easily tailored to suit di erent categories of visitors, such as higher rates for luxury accommodations or adjusted depending on the season.

Peak tourist periods can see slightly increased taxes, while o -peak times might enjoy reduced rates—allowing local governments to ne-tune their approach based on the ebb and ow of visitor numbers.

One of the most pressing issues is the cruise industry’s impact, o en singled out for exacerbating overcrowding in popular destinations. Cruises bring thousands of tourists in a day, overwhelming local infrastructure with little economic bene t to the area. With the minimal spending from cruise passengers o en going to multinational companies rather than local

businesses, it raises the question: shouldn’t cruise passengers also contribute to the local economy through a tourism tax?

e tax is usually a percentage of the total cost of the trip and is intended to raise revenue for local governments. However, while some people see tourist tax as a way to generate additional income, others view it as a burden on travellers.

Business Traveller India explores the bene ts and challenges of tourism tax.

Benefits of Tourism Tax:

• Contribution to Local Resources:

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of tourism tax is to ensure that visitors share in the responsibility of maintaining and developing the local economy. is helps to prevent the nancial burden of hosting tourists from falling solely on the shoulders of the locals. Tourism Taxes help to create a more balanced and sustainable model for communities.

• Enhanced Infrastructure: One of the key advantages of tourism taxes is the ability to reinvest funds into local infrastructure. e revenue generated from them can be allocated toward improving roads, upgrading public transportation, enhancing public spaces, and expanding essential amenities. ese improvements make the destination more attractive and accessible to visitors, as well as elevate the overall tourist experience.

• Promoting Sustainable Tourism: Tourism taxes also play a vital role in encouraging more sustainable travel practices. e funds can be used to support environmentalconservation

projects, such as preserving natural landscapes, protecting wildlife habitats, and funding eco-friendly initiatives. is helps local governments minimise their environmental footprint and foster a conscientious approach to travel, bene ting both the destination and its ecosystems in the long term.

Challenges for Tourists:

• Lack of Transparency: Many tourists are not fully informed about the purpose of the tax or how the funds are being used, leading to confusion and scepticism. Without transparency, visitors may feel that the tax is unjusti ed, fuelling distrust and frustration towards the local authorities and the destination.

• Feeling Unwelcome: For some tourists, the perception that the local government is using them to generate pro t may lead visitors to feel unwelcome or exploited. In turn, this can tarnish the destination’s reputation, making it seem less hospitable and driving potential future visitors away.

• Rising Costs: One of the primary concerns with tourism tax is the additional expense they add to an already costly trip.

For budget-conscious travellers, even a small tax can signi cantly increase the overall price of their stay. is added cost may deter some potential visitors from choosing the destination, especially when they have other, more a ordable options to consider.

THE BIG PICTURE

The Himalayan Ibex

While trekking through the rugged expanse of Kibber Valley in the Spiti region of the majestic Himalayas, Amartya Mukherjee spotted a Himalayan Ibex poised on a rocky ledge. Shot on Sony Alpha x6700 with a 100 - 400 mm lens, the Himalayan Ibex roam, scaling cliffs with ease, its uniquely carved horns like spirals of time. Surrounded by the vast, untouched landscape, Mukherjee says to have felt a deep connection to this magnificent wilderness, as if time itself had slowed, allowing him to share in this fleeting encounter.
