Hokkaido

Hokkaido

Hokkaido province comprises about one-fifth of Japan’s total land area. It is the second largest and northernmost of Japan's four main islands; bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west, the Sea of Okhotsk to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the east and south. Together with a few small adjacent islands, it constitutes a dō or province of Japan. Hokkaido was long the domain of the aboriginal Ainu peoples. Japanese settlement of the island began in 1869, when the territory, which was then called Yezo province, was renamed Hokkaido or North Sea Province. The Ainu people have a unique culture and they are working to revive traditional dances from old records and creating new Ainu music, preserving embroidery with unique patterns and crafting wooden carvings.

The climate is generally cool even during summer months but the winters can be harsh, with lots of snowfall, below-zero temperatures and frozen seas making it an ideal destination for winter activities, especially skiing. In summer it does not get as hot and humid as in the other parts of the country and the climate is perfect for various outdoor activities that Hokkaido offers visitors.

With its unspoiled nature, several national parks and rural landscapes, Hokkaido attracts many outdoor lovers; skiers and snowboarders in the colder seasons and hikers, cyclists and campers in the warmer months from around June to September. Sapporo which is the administrative headquarters is in the southwest on the Ishikari River. It is the province’s industrial, commercial, and tourist centre. Hokkaido University, founded in 1876, is located in Sapporo. Other important towns are the ports of Hakodate, Otaru, and Muroran.

The economic development of Hokkaido includes iron, steel, wood pulp, dairy, and fishing industries. Rice, soy and kidney beans, oats, barley, hay, and white potatoes are important crops. The island contains one of the largest coal deposits in Japan. Construction of the Seikan Tunnel, which was dug under the Tsugaru Strait in order to link Hokkaido with the main Japanese island of Honshu, was begun in 1964 and was completed in 1988. The tunnel carries a rail line between Hakodate on Hokkaido and Aomori  on Honshu.

With so much to offer local and foreign visitors, a visit to Hokkaido will be nothing short of memorable and unforgettable.

Where history meets modernism

WORDS Khursheed Mistry

Originally known as Yamato, Nara was Japan’s first capital and the seat of the Emperor. Rich in ideas and technology from Europe, China and Korea via the Silk Road, Nara is a living museum with 1,300 years of art and architecture to offer. Japan’s capital Heijokyo before Kyoto, with a palace and administrative buildings, was established near what is now Nara city. Based on the Chinese city of Xi’an, the city was built in a grid format with the Palace at its north end.

Emperor Shomu directed the works of  Tōdai-ji Temple and the world’s largest bronze Buddha, as a way to bring hope after wars, a smallpox outbreak and the failure of crops. After the capital was moved to Kyoto, Heijokyo was abandoned and very little remained beyond the foundations. Several buildings and the south gate have since been restored and walking around the palace grounds gives visitors an idea of the magnificent grandeur of the ancient capital.

Nara contains the lion's share of the oldest national treasures; in sculpture, 35 national treasures are from before the eighth century. In buildings, 32 of Nara's national treasures date from the 12th century.

Two of the greatest masterpieces of 8th-century Japanese literature originate in Nara. The Kojiki is a collection of the legends of the Gods and how Japan was founded. It shows Nara as the scene of many important historic events and epic dramas. The Manyoshu, which is the oldest collection of Japanese poetry, is the bible of Japanese letters. Artworks inspired by the poems are displayed at the Nara Prefecture Complex of Man'yo Culture. Nara has a range of Buddhist artwork spanning centuries and the carvings and sculptures, vary significantly in style and appearance. In summer, kuzukiri or kuzu mochi is relished and when the weather gets colder, kuzu powder is dissolved in warm water and used as a remedy for coughs and colds. The noodles are bland in taste, so the dessert is served with black sugar syrup, known as kuromitsu. The dish is sometimes served with other toppings, such as fruit or matcha.

In the night from March 12 to March 13, between around 1:30 am and 2:30 am, priests descend repeatedly from the Nigatsudo by torchlight to draw water from a well at the base of the temple hall. The well's water is said to have restorative powers and will be dedicated to the main image of Nigatsudo, Eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu. ARTS & CULTURE

✤ The NaTioNal MuseuM of arT, osaka

The underground art gallery was created to introduce visitors to a variety of vibrant, vital works of art. Originally used as the Expo Art Museum during Expo 1970, it collected, preserved, and exhibited domestic and international works of art for three decades. However, increasing wear on the facilities prompted the construction of its current structure. The new style of an "underground" art museum with three stories underground (a portion of the top floor extends above ground) now not only houses works by artists like Cezanne, Picasso, Ernst, Tsuguharu Foujita, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi, but a great number of post-war pieces of contemporary art, as well. In addition to a variety of monthly exhibitions, the museum also hosts lectures, symposiums, and gallery talks regularly. The structure visible above ground was inspired by the vitality of bamboo and the development and growth of contemporary art.

✤ Nagai BoTaNical gardeN

Nagai Botanical Garden is an outdoor botanical garden in Osaka that opened in 1974. The garden is situated inside Nagai Park and was opened in 1944 as an urban park that includes facilities such as a baseball stadium. Nagai Botanical Garden stretches over an area of 240,000 sqm with a large lake in the centre, and its flora changes with the seasons throughout the year. The garden is now home to many wild birds, such as Northern goshawks and owls, which are placed at the top of the food chain and thus dependent on a healthy ecosystem to exist. Also, located inside the garden is the vibrant teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka.

✤ suMiyoshi Taisha

Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrines, was founded in the third century before the introduction of Buddhism. The shrine displays a unique style of shrine architecture, called Sumiyoshi-zukuri, that is free of influence from the Asian mainland. Among the annual events, the "Otaueshinji" is usually held in June, which is the Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in Japan. "Taue" means rice planting in Japanese. Although this kind of event is held in many parts of Japan, the Sumiyoshi Shrine is large in scale and does not omit any of the rituals, but maintains the prestige of the ceremony, making it spectacular and grand. Sumiyoshi Taisha is the main and most famous of over two thousand Sumiyoshi shrines found across Japan. Sumiyoshi shrines enshrine the kami (Shinto gods) who protect travellers, fishermen and sailors at sea. The shrines are therefore usually found close to harbours.

✤ NaTioNal BuNraku TheaTre

A theatre where Bunraku, a traditional art form of Japan can be enjoyed is a mustvisit cultural attraction to experience a unique form of the arts. The theatre houses many facilities, including the main theatre, a training institution and archives for historical materials. The building was constructed with a mix of tradition and modernity, with key elements from traditional Edo Era architecture incorporated abstractly throughout the design. Each of the plays performed here usually has about a twoweek run, and only a few plays are staged each year.
