What motivated you to transition from your successful role as Co-Founder and COO of Make My Trip to embark on the journey of founding Wildlife Luxuries, a venture focused on redefining luxury hospitality with a commitment to conservation?
After the success of Make My Trip, I felt compelled to start something from scratch again. While Make My Trip had reached a good point, I thrive on building rather than managing large, scaled-up ventures. I also wanted to give back to the industry that had taught me so much, particularly in terms of sustainability. Conservation and wildlife have always been close to my heart, and I believe that sustainability is crucial for the future of the travel and hospitality industry. Traditional hospitality often prioritises opulence over experience, but I aim to change that paradigm by focusing on creating meaningful and sustainable travel experiences.
Can you elaborate on how Wildlife Luxuries integrates sustainability and localisation into its hospitality model, and how these principles enhance the guest experience while supporting the surrounding communities?
Our approach to conservation and sustainability is intrinsic rather than additive. We prioritise extreme localisation and personalisation. This means using local materials, concepts, and talent to ensure sustainability. For instance, our rammed earth villas are
built with earth from the area and designed by local artisans. We address water scarcity by implementing local solutions like building water bodies and partnering with local nurseries for greenery that serves a purpose beyond ornamentation.
What inspired the choice of Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary as the location for Wildlife Luxuries' inaugural property, and how does this setting align with the company's vision and values?
Certain forests in India, like Jim Corbett, Ranthambore, Kanha, and Bandhavgarh, have gained prominence in tourism due to government efforts and private sector involvement. However, the focus has often been on safari experiences, particularly centered around spotting big cats like tigers and leopards. We believe in creating holistic wildlife experiences that encompass more than just safaris, including wilderness immersion, property enjoyment, and local cuisine. With this vision in mind, we sought to establish a new destination rather than adding to existing popular ones. Yavatmal, the region in Maharastra where the sanctuary is located, despite its economic challenges, presented an opportunity to transform a recently designated wildlife sanctuary into a thriving destination. This initiative not only aims to uplift the local economy but also serves as a model for creating similar ventures across the country, providing new opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts and holidaymakers alike. With its convenient connectivity and proximity to Nagpur and Hyderabad, Yavatmal has the potential to
become a noteworthy destination for wildlife tourism.
In what ways does Wildlife Luxuries differentiate itself from traditional luxury hospitality offerings?
The crux lies in "extreme personalisation.” The hospitality industry has traditionally focused on opulent amenities, but the evolving trend emphasises extreme personalisation, tailoring experiences to meet travellers' diverse motivations. This shift highlights the importance of understanding guests' needs beyond recognition and loyalty programs, ensuring each trip's unique expectations are met. Furthermore, technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the guest experience, from booking to in-room services, providing convenience without intruding on privacy. Integrating extreme personalisation and technological innovation is key to the industry's future growth and meeting the evolving demands of travellers.

Other than Hyundai, a Korean marque, which is an outlier and has enjoyed tremendous success in India, most global brands have struggled to nd footing in the local auto sphere and continue to battle to secure a single-digit percentage of the total pie. Amidst all this chaos and struggle, global car makers occasionally do get things right. Although some of the models have been inherently excellent, they still faltered due to being ahead of their time, or due to poor brand perception. On the other hand, these
products have o en led market leaders to rethink their strategy and introduce products that mimic the recipe, address the aws that led to its failure, and nd immense success in the process. Small hatchbacks have enjoyed immense popularity in the Indian automotive landscape for the longest time. In the years before, the market was largely characterised by small, budget-friendly city cars. With the nation’s rising spending power there has been a gradual shi towards premium hatchbacks that provide better safety, a longer feature list, a more upscale interior, and greater comfort, re ecting the evolving consumer’s preferences. Back in 2008, the Skoda Fabia was one of the rst premium hatchbacks to enter our market. It introduced a touch of European elegance and sophistication to a segment that was previously dominated by basic, budget-oriented cars. e Fabia not only blended style and comfort but also made the idea of owning a European car more attainable. Before this, the Skoda brand had already achieved signi cant success with the Octavia in India establishing an aspirational
image for the VW Group-owned brand in the country. Despite its favourable characteristics, the Fabia struggled in terms of sales and faced tough competition from the Hyundai i20, which was launched shortly a er. While the Fabia o ered a premium build and attractive features such as a sunroof, it came with a steep price tag that deterred many prospective buyers. It also came with a noisy diesel engine and an underpowered petrol engine that were simply not par for the price. e launch of the Skoda Fabia in 2008 kicked o the trend of high-end hatchbacks in India, and it is a pity Skoda never launched the current evolution of the hatchback sold globally. Given the more widespread acceptance of higher-priced hatchbacks now, the Fabia in its current avatar deserves a revival in India and will undoubtedly be a hot seller.

Volkswagen Jetta
With modern technology quickly trickling down from luxury cars to more a ordable options in the market, the allure of luxury car brands has never been weaker. Some may contend the law of diminishing returns has become stronger with cars in recent times, with mid-sized cars delivering the best value. In 2011, the sixth-generation Volkswagen Jetta made its debut in India, challenging the established perception of value in entry-level luxury vehicles. While the previous iteration of Jetta was also sold in India, it was the MK6 version that delivered formidable value and took the ght to more expensive cars. Despite being priced at less than a third of the cost of the Audi A4, positioned two steps higher within the VW Group family, the Jetta o ered a superior package and outshone its more expensive counterpart. One of the most notable advantages of the Jetta was its superior DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox compared
to the Audi A4’s CVT gearbox. e dualclutch transmission provided quicker gearshi s and faster in-gear acceleration, enhancing the driving experience and real-world performance of the Jetta. In contrast, the Audi A4’s CVT gearbox felt lethargic and did not deliver the same level of responsiveness, diminishing the overall driving satisfaction despite its higher price tag. Furthermore, both cars o ered a comparable feature set, with minor distinctions that could be addressed through a ermarket upgrades. e Jetta also boasted an impressive interior with excellent build quality, albeit not at the level of the Audi. While the Jetta may have never been a topseller, its devoted community of owners still hold on to their cars dearly, as nding an upgrade from such an impressive package is no easy task. e Jetta therefore merits a revival by Volkswagen, as it continues to set the standard for mid-sized sedan value o erings.

e second-generation CR-V was launched
in India in 2003 and it quickly became the best-selling luxury SUV in the country. Since then, Honda has launched multiple future iterations of the SUV in India but failed to replicate the success of the original. Unlike traditional, rough-and-tumble SUVs, the CR-V artfully balanced the attributes of a capable o -roader with the comfort and convenience of a luxury vehicle. Its reputation for longevity and durability allowed it to resonate with consumers seeking a vehicle that could e ortlessly transition from urban commutes to weekend adventures. By doing so, the CR-V e ectively bridged the gap between rugged utility and upscale comfort, setting a new standard for the burgeoning so -roader SUV segment.
e CR-V was discontinued from the Honda India product portfolio at the end of 2020. Seeing the trend of Hybrid options on the rise in India however, it might be the perfect opportunity for Honda to introduce the 2024 CR-V Hybrid in the country and capture the vacuum le by the original.
Ford Endeavour (Ford Everest)
For the longest time, the Ford Endeavour had carved out its place as the ultimate full-sized SUV for the Indian market, o ering a standout package that outshone all its competitors. Sold over multiple generations in India since 2003, the Endeavour was the agship o ering from Ford in India and nailed the recipe for a butch full-sized truck. With its bold and rugged appearance, the Endeavour perfectly aligned with Indian preferences for muscular and substantial SUVs, striking a chord with those who sought a blend of style, comfort, and toughness. Alas with Ford’s withdrawal from India and the closing down of its sales operation in the country, a gem was lost. Such is the vacuum le by the Endeavour, that owners of the nal iteration refuse to part with their vehicles, and the resale value of the SUV has risen since its discontinuation. Beneath the hood, the Endeavour boasted powerful engine options, including a 3.2 litre, 5-cylinder diesel engine that had enough grunt to tow a mountain. Its
advanced terrain management system further enhanced its o -road capabilities, making it an appealing choice for novice adventure enthusiasts looking to o -road worry-free. In comparison to rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour o en stood out for its superior ride comfort, plush interiors, and a far more sophisticated feature list. e Endeavour’s compelling value, combined with its sturdy construction and impressive performance, rmly established it as a frontrunner in the fullsized SUV category. Sadly, with uncertainty around Ford’s future over the last few years, the sales gures could never re ect its true potential. Sold globally as the Everest, the Endeavour deserves a fresh start and is the most likely in this list to be re-introduced, as units of the 2024 model year have been spotted in transit within the country. Anyone with a booking on a Toyota Fortuner might want to hold o for a few more weeks, as a formidable alternative’s arrival may be in the o ng.

Ensconced within the grandeur of Shangri-La Singapore, The Lobby Lounge’s chic décor enhanced my gastronomy experience as I sank into its plush comforts after a long and tiring day. The Lobby Lounge o ers a delectable array of à la carte local heritage hawkers’ dishes made with the finest quality ingredients. I started my meal with a glass of the 2019 vintage Siblings Shiraz from the Leeuwin Estate of Margaret River. The wine has a dense and dark nose and is concentrated with blackcurrant, redcurrant, and blueberries. Beneath it lies layers of cocoa, cola, and gentle smoky oak. The elevated notes in this delicious wine are of violets, Szechuan pepper, tobacco, anise, and cloves.
As I sipped on my glass of wine, I was recommended a platter of Chicken Satay with peanut gravy, cucumber, and onions which I ordered. The simple yet delectable starter resulted in an explosive fusion of flavours - the cucumbers and onions added a harmonious crunch to each bite! You can’t be in Singapore and not eat the famed Hainanese Chicken Rice meticulously crafted by Chef Yon Jia who has gained recognition for his culinary

The hotel’s opulent and comfortable accommodations span the fourth to 13th floors of the building.
WHERE IS IT Conveniently linked to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Highway, it is a 30-minute drive from Abu Dhabi International airport and more than an hour’s drive from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International and Dubai International airports. The Hotel is a short distance from the Louvre Abu Dhabi, The Galleria, Saadiyat Beach and other major attractions. It connects to Abu Dhabi Global Market Square and the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
ROOMS The hotel has a total number of 200 guest rooms including rooms and suites as well as a mix of 124 residential units. I stayed in the plush 85 sqm, spacious Deluxe Four Seasons Executive Suite o ering city and water views, with an opulent bathroom and a plethora of luxury amenities including a 24-hour multilingual butler, complimentary wifi and overnight shoeshine, translation and business services, a shopping experience with private concierge and many more which made me feel so well taken care of. My suite came fitted with a large safe, tea and co ee maker, a well-stocked bar, and spacious, well-lit closets to name a few.
FOOD AND DRINK I started my morning at the contemporary, marketinspired neighbourhood restaurant, Crust, enjoying one of the finest and healthiest bu et breakfast options, o ering an incredible spread of nutritious culinary delights. I indulged in an egg white omelette with toasted sourdough bread, vegetable juice and a refreshing shot of excellent cappuccino co ee. Other exceptional award-winning gastronomic options in the hotel include Butcher & Still, Cafe Milano, Al Meylas and Eclipse Terrace Lounge.

BACKGROUND An idyllic haven embodying luxury and comfort in the heart of the city, Shangri-La Bangkok o icially opened in August 1986 welcoming business travellers, and tourists, as well as meeting and incentive groups. The success led to the opening in August 1991 of the exclusive Krungthep Wing an independent tower with its reception and lobby.
WHAT’S IT LIKE Harmony, tranquillity, and elegance have inspired the design aesthetics of Shangri-La Bangkok. The modern decor complemented by stunning Thai decorative motifs and colourful handcrafted artwork are found in all parts of the hotel.
WHERE IS IT Only a short distance from the Krungthep Wing is the Skytrain station which o ers rapid and convenient access to business and shopping areas as well as an MTR subway connection. Situated on the river, Shangri-La Bangkok has the longest river frontage and provides easy river access to iconic city attractions. The nearby highway extension makes quick connections to and from the international and domestic airports.
ROOMS 802 rooms o er river or city views and are decorated with classic Thai elements in the Shangri-La and the Krungthep Wings. I stayed in the expansive Shangri-La Wing Horizon Club River View Room spanning 36 sqm, a ording panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River. This room also o ered access to Horizon Club Lounge and its myriad benefits, including daily breakfast, evening cocktails and use of meeting room facilities. Other luxury amenities included premium toiletries, an opulent bathroom, a feather duvet, hypoallergenic pillows, a pillow menu, wifi, high-speed broadband Internet access and much more.
FOOD AND DRINK I started my morning with a hearty breakfast of over hard fried eggs, yoghurt with fresh fruit, and a cup of delicious cappuccino at Next2, a trendy and modern alfresco café which alleviates all-day dining to the next level. Other renowned and popular culinary outlets include Salathip, the iconic Shang Palace, Volti Tuscan Grill & Bar, Lobby Lounge, The Long Bar and The Chocolate Boutique.
