WAKE UP AND DREAM!

H

by Pastor Chidi

appy New Year and welcome to a brand new opportunity to dream.

As I was reading the 37th chapter of the first book (Genesis) of the Book of the Books (The Holy Bible), my attention was drawn to the 18th, 19th and 20th verses, which say: But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. 19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” 18

The portion said that Joseph’s brothers saw him from a far distance, they sarcastically said to one another “here comes the dreamer”. Joseph was a dreamer and we all know that his dream came to pass. But I wonder if Joseph’s brothers had any dreams. Probably, they had dreams but they were too small and were easily swallowed and aborted by petty jealousy and hatred. My friend, do you have a dream and how big is your dream? There are my obstacles to dreaming dreams. Some of the obstacles include: Lack of self –knowledge. Some of the limitations you face now are self-imposed. The field of your vision is often limited by your experience instead of being guided by your IMAGINATION. Self-knowledge is very important to dreaming big dreams because your dreams must come from on the inside (Genesis 13:14-16) Self- hatred is a blocker of ability to dream dreams. Love yourself – you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Guilt and inability to forgive yourself is a heavy blocker to your ability to dream dreams. Free yourself from selfcondemnation and release your spirit to dream. The Bible says “there is now no

condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2, NIV). Long-standing anger – This will definitely drain your energy and ability to dream dreams. Keep short accounts, if you have hurt someone, go and ask for forgiveness. I empathise with victims of child abuse, rejection, divorce, verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, racism and economic injustice. But please you don’t have to remain a victim all your life. Don’t develop “victim mentality”. We can help! Healing is available! The Lord makes all things beautiful. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are God’s workmanship created unto good works. Negative Thinking – Negative thinking cripples your ability to dream. Negative thinking makes excuses rather than sees opportunities. For every opportunity, you will find some with excuse. Negativity builds doubt instead of faith. Negativity reproduces itself and finds company. It amazing how negative people locate themselves in a crowd. The Bible calls this familiar spirits. Negativity limits the capacity to dream. Negative pulls down instead of building up. Negativity justifies its own existence. Dream Thieves There is every need for you to embrace tightly your God given dream. Why? Because there are dreams thieves waiting to steal your dream. You have to understand that all dream thieves will come with element of truth. There will be questions in your mind. Some of the questions may be: what if I don’t succeed or what if it doesn’t work out? What if I am making a mistake by pursuing this dream? These questions are not wrong; they are genuine and normal when you are moving

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

into something new or higher heights. Please don’t ignore the questions. Don’t deny the existence of such questions. Answer them but you will never have all the answers. Then this is where you have to step out by faith. Remember that the Bible says that the steps of the righteous man are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23). Here are some of the dream thieves you need to watch out for: Firstly, Yourself: For you to step out in faith and fulfil your dreams, you have to fight yourself. Change frightens people and sometimes it is difficult to get out of our comfort zones. Secondly, Family: You grew up with your family. You love your family members and they love you too. Sometimes to continue to love and respect your family, and at the same time obeying God can be a difficult task. This dream thief is very personal and sensitive and therefore a difficult one. Thirdly, Friends: Some friends will understand and support you. But there are friends that will be used to talk you out of your dream. They may be thinking that they are helping you, but they are sincerely wrong. Some of your friends don’t have any big dreams and they would want to keep you on their level. They want to keep you in the same box they are in. Please say no to them because they are dream thieves. Fourthly, Time: Time is a neutral force. Time can work for you or against you. Time in its negative state is a dream thief. Time can eat away faith and perseverance. Use time to your advantage. Fifthly, Satan: I have deliberately put Satan last on my list because most people will like to blame him for everything that has gone wrong in their lives. Sincerely speaking most of the things that have gone wrong in our lives have nothing to do with the Satan or devil. Most of the things that have gone

wrong in our lives are as a result of wrong choices and bad decisions. (I leave that for another discussion.) Surely, Satan hates it when God’s children dream. He will inject thoughts in your mind in order to steal your dream. Sure the sarcastic voice of Satan will say - “you want to tell me that you are special?” Who do you think you are to think that you can accomplish that?” or he may say “This your glorious and big dreams are just an ego trip”. He will then offer alternatives to you just to make you compromise. He will offer to you cheap alternatives “that glitters but are not gold”. Remember God gave you the dream and God will always give you a dream that is bigger than yourself. It is never too late to dream Dear friends, time has come for you to say no to a life of mediocrity. Mediocrity is simply not being all that God has called you to be. It doesn’t matter where you have been in life. What matters is where you are going. Everybody makes mistakes. Everyone gets disappointed. It is how you react to it that makes all the difference. Remember, your attitude will determine your altitude. So wake up and dream. It is never too late to start dreaming. Last Word God is the giver of real dreams and He is the best dream releaser. You need Him to help you to order your steps. Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that will stand (Proverbs 19:21). Therefore, if you have not made the decision to enter into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, I would like to invite you to do so now by praying this simple prayer. “Lord Jesus, I need you. Please forgive me for all I have done wrong. Please come into my life and begin to lead me. I pray this as sincerely as I know how. Amen” If you have prayed this prayer, you are now

RESOLUTIONS ! RESOLUTIONS ! RESOLUTIONS !

E

by: Claudia Andrews

very year after giving in to the gluttonous nature associated with Christmas, we wait patiently till the New Year to redeem ourselves. We have become accustomed to waiting on the New Year before deciding to make plans for selfimprovement. New Year’s Resolutions have become a way of ensuring that we stay on track for the upcoming year.

resolutions is that of weight loss. Many people put themselves on diets in January after over indulging in December and set unrealistic weight loss goals. As simple as people may put it, weight loss is the most failed and easily given up resolution to date. The vast difference between the amount of people at the gym in January to that of April is testament to this.

The concept of New Year’s resolutions has been around since Roman times. During this period the Romans made resolutions with a moral flavour, mostly to be good to people. The Roman god ‘Janus’ was a twofaced god that looks backwards into the old year and forwards into the new. As a result, January was adopted as a month to observe past achievements and set goals for the year ahead.

This leads me to wonder: do people set resolutions because they feel it is the norm or do people whole heartedly do so in an attempt to make a difference in their lives? I like to believe in mankind and think that people do so in hope of improving their lives even though, it is unclear why some wait till the end of the year and the beginning of a new one before deciding to amend their ways.

Resolutions have since shifted from its original purpose over the years. The moral angle of resolutions has since changed to accommodate the materialistic nature of our present day society. Resolutions now consist of all manner of things, mostly things that lead to self-gratification.

Overall, we all need to take note of the initial purpose of New Year’s resolutions which is to work towards improving our relationships with others. It is imperative that instead of trying to find ways to acquire the latest gadgets and focusing on the vain things in life, we instead find ways to accommodate the needs of others. We must focus on making sure that our resolutions, if we do set them, should be realistic and achievable and also helps in the betterment of others.

Theoretically, New Year’s resolutions are productive because, it is intended to help individuals stay on track; the execution of it however, fails many. Resolutions are usually forgotten by April and the main reason for failure is the setting of unrealistic goals. We have become accustomed to the ‘express delivery’ nature of things so many give up because it simply takes too long to reach the goals. For instance, one of the leading

On New Year’s Eve when the countdown begins and we look forward to the New Year with hope, let us spare a thought for the forgotten resolutions and if we must, make sure that we have realistic hopes for the year.

Bravo! To Blavo & Co Solicitors! Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards 2012 BEST PROFESSIONAL by George Ameyaw

M

r John Blavo, founder and Principal Partner of ‘Blavo & Co Solicitors’ took home the desired GUBA ‘Best Professional 2012’ award. Amongst the finalists were Dr Charles Easmon, Mr Douglas Oppong and Dr Felix Konotey-Aluhu, who are all highly experienced in their fields. Blavo & Co specialise in Mental Health, Public Law, Commercial and Employment Law. The Ghanaian born Mr Blavo founded his firm in 1997 with the commitment to defend the rights of individuals and businesses. After 15 years in the field, he can boast of eight successful multicultural firms with over 200 employees. Blavo & Co generously gives to a number of charities. They provide financial support to The Baptist School and Orphanage Compound (BASCO) in Ghana and The Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Blavo & Co also supports the MIND charity, a charity dedicated to tackling mental health problems, an area of great interest to the company. The organisation has received many accreditations from law societies and it is a trusted source for customer satisfaction. In this insightful interview, Uncle George finds out the impact the GUBA award has had on Mr John Blavo & Co Solicitors You are the GUBA 2012 Best Professional Award winner! How does it feel? I am very privileged to have won the GUBA Best Professional award and excited at all the prospects it might bring. GUBA has set up such an excellent award process which gives an opportunity for people to be recognised

for their achievements and contribution to society. I feel really overwhelmed by the public confidence shown in me and my organisation. Why do you think you won? My fellow nominees were all very accomplished individuals so it was a tough category. I think however that being in the law field set me apart. Law in itself is an exclusive club, for someone like me not originally from the UK; getting the chance to permeate such a club is an achievement. Also, the fact that I’ve managed to set up a law practice that employs over 200 people from 40 nationalities all in a space of 15 years, I believe contributed to my victory. Did the GUBA 2012 awards meet your expectations? The GUBA awards was an exciting experience for me. It was an amazing event filled with good food, good networking opportunities and a great atmosphere. Oh yes, it exceeded my expectations! What is the way forward for Blavo &Co? My firm is laying plans to branch out into the rest of the country. We are looking at branches in Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham and hopefully throughout all the major cities in the UK and ultimately to expand to Ghana. What will be your message to aspiring professionals? I would like to point out that it is difficult to make it in any field however; you have to be willing to find success even when it seems impossible.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

When I first begun I had no prospects of becoming a lawyer: to get a degree, attend a law school, and then a 2 year training contract without which you cannot become a fully qualified lawyer, which was extremely difficult to get. My firm has therefore set up some work placement initiatives to give young people from inner cities an insight into the law and to help them decide the best field to go into. I would like to say that although the road might not be clear, it is possible, so people need to keep persevering and work harder to achieve whatever dreams they set their hearts on.

business ideas. I also think a category for firms/companies that invest in people will be a great addition.

Is there a category you will like GUBA 2013 to recognise? I think the Business Innovation category will be a good one to add because it will recognise those that have creative and progressive

We wish Blavo & Co Solicitors more success in their field.

Mr John Blavo and his firm Blavo & Co have become an instrumental force in the UK. The GUBA 2012 Best Professional award is one of major significance, not just to GUBA, but to a host of charities and to young men and women, as they get to experience the law profession through work placement. GUBA values the contributions these professionals continue to make towards the betterment of our communities.

Thomas Meloncon’s play: “The Diary of Black Men”

T

By Lekan

he phenomenon known as “The Diary of Black Men” is an exciting and tantalizing theatrical production that has played to sold-out audiences in America and England `’for nearly a quarter of a century’,.

Olujinmi

Woman?” provokes thoughts of a historical/ social nature and magnitude. Originally penned in the late 70’s, this newly updated version addresses the issues of love, trust and black family values that have long been discussed cross-culturally, by economists, politicians, theologians, social scientists and the like, thus making the black man, in the words of Mr. Meloncon, “…the most talked about animal in America.” This observation could very well be the catalyst that has consistently packed venues in every corner of this country and abroad. The play attempts to address that statement and the aforementioned question of black love through a series of vignettes and scenarios examining the relationships between Black men and women using six male stereotypes: The Player, The Blue Collar Worker, The Militant, The Wall St. Brother, The Black Muslim and “Slick” The Hustler.

Thomas Meloncon

Written by Houstonian Thomas Meloncon, this choreopoem has stood the test of time and is the longest touring and most successful stage play in Black theatre history.

“I’m the most talked about man in America…the black man. Haunted and backed up against the wall by researchers and writers…” - Excerpt from The Diary of Black Men

They were spellbound in New York. Emotions ran high in Chicago, the audience begged for more in Philadelphia, Los Angeles & Washington D.C. The acting is raw and powerful! There will be tears, laughter, anger, & joy.

The show is a remarkable presentation that passionately combines prose, poetry and dance that complements each other in a highly dramatic style. It has always been a revolutionary piece that passionately delivers art and social commentary creating an emotional response from its audience.

The play’s subtitle “How Do You Love a Black

pedestals in tableau. As the warm specials individually illuminates the men, they all, being true to their stereotype and character, offer their pitch to impress the lone female character in the play. The Muslim for instance, offers protection, but with it goes submission. “Come my sister, learn your place as my wife.” The Player, a glib smooth operator claims, “I am all man, from head to toe.” The Working Man boasts that he “always supports his family.” The Militant says he’s “not the problem but he is the solution.” The Intellectual claims to possess “the three main ingredients any Black woman seeks in a Black man: education, intelligence, and a solid bank account.” Slick, a new-age pimp, promises a better way of life brimmed with excitement and romance. The plays’ one female character is an exceptional dancer, represents Black women but has no speaking part in the whole production.

Mr. Meloncon is often commissioned by agencies and organizations to craft a play for their specific needs. He has been an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Communications, and recently taught in the Fine Arts Department of Texas Southern University. Mr. Meloncon has also been Resident Playwright at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts from 1989 through 2002. The Diary of Black Men, How Do You Love A Black Woman???? One of his most successful plays appeared Off-Broadway in 1982. The success of this dynamic drama, which is still touring, drew the attention of talk show host, Phil Donahue. Thomas Meloncon, along with the cast, appeared on the Phil Donahue show December 14, 1989. “Diary” has continued its national tour, setting record attendance numbers in America and England (1989, 1991, 1994, 2000).

“The Diary of Black Men” is a justly redeeming morality play laced with comedy and lots of revealing and provocative talk about Black men and their voice in the Human conversation. The Writer Thomas Meloncon is a nationally known Playwright and Poet, who lives in Houston, Texas with his wife and daughters. The Source My work speaks of the ‘Beginning’ and the ‘End’, the stem and the leaves, the ‘root’ and the ‘fruit’ From the ‘Beginning’: the soil for the seed, the land itself. The foundation and structure, the substance and raw material The clay The earth and the deep earth, The clay that holds trees in soil. From the ‘End’; Objects in vessels such as flowers, water and soil recycling life’s essence - never ending. The ‘Source’ represents the start of every vessel I make; The inspiration, the ideology and the unspoken word, representing vision, feelings and cultural experiences. The transference of inspiration into invention, innovation into Art, through bringing dust to life and life, to imitate nature itself as a secondary essence of creation. The ‘Source’, like a tree, needs rain for constant feeding. The ‘Source’, like a tree, needs the sunlight to flourish. The fertile soil helps replenish its vitality, creates ripe fruit, sustains healthy leaves and strong stems. So does MY CRAFT AS AN ART FORM; It feeds off my culture and draws from its traditions as one would draw from a well to quench thirst. It has its roots in the language of my forefathers. The eyes feed off this rich abundance of heritage and adorns its splendour, as the mouth feeds off African food when cooked in its native clay furnace. It reminds me of the infusion between the village traditions and culture And the ethics which are passed down from generation to generation. This fusion has a silent voice and speaks of individuality, beauty and family. My silent voice being emulated through my craft; representing the continent revealing my contemporary fresh new light, life of Art, Every handmade ceramic I create tells a unique story of a rich measure, culture, texture, mixture and splendour; valuing a people indigenous to the motherland (Africa).

Expressions of Africa The root of my creation (the Source – the inspiration within) Like the roots of a tree is hidden And it reveals itself like the fruit on a tree (my Art) The sweeter the fruit, the better the creation.

- I have rented my two bedroom annex next door to my house, which I live in on a license to occupy, to a couple for the past two years. Recently I gave them notice to leave, which has since expired. My lodgers are now claiming that I have not given them enough notice. I think a month is reasonable and I do not really care I just need my annex back. Can I change the locks as it is part of my house?

A

- It would appear that you have made a fundamental error in giving your tenants (as they are not lodgers, I will explain later on) the wrong contract. There are various different tenancy contracts to use and knowing which one to use for the right situation is imperative. The defining point is that you are renting a property that they have access to by using a separate door. This is very different from renting a room in your own house, where they enter through the same main door and share facilities with you such as a bathroom and or kitchen and do not have exclusive use of an area. In the latter explanation they would be a lodger and a license to occupy would be the correct contract, as you would be the live in landlord. However, this is not the

Parris case and the implied situation and not what is written on your tenancy is what any court will decide on and follow the law for that type of tenancy. Therefore, the statutory legal rights of your tenants will not be affected because you did not know to serve the right contract in the first place. By law, in the UK, any landlord renting to a tenant that with an AST (Assured Shorthold Tenancy) in place should use a Section 21notice – if they require possession of their property back, would be the correct notice to serve, providing there are no rent arrears. It is important to know whether your contract is still in its fixed term or periodic and that all names are spelt correctly, with correct dates and the notice must be two clear rent periods and allow for time for serving this document. It is vital that this form is completed accurately, as any errors will invalidate it and the courts will throw it out on a technically and you will need to start the entire Section 21 two month notice again. No tenant has to leave after the expiry of a Section 21 Notice, but most do. If your tenants do not then a landlord has to then start court proceedings. Depending on which court and how busy they are, this process could take another 3 months, but shorter if you use the accelerated possession procedure, which is all done by paperwork and no hearing. However, it is important to note, that

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

under AST which you should have served, you must also register any deposits taken. This has been law since April 2007 and recently Tenants Deposit Law has changed again. There are severe penalties in place for any landlord who does not do this and if you have taken a deposit then the accelerated procedure will not be an option open to you. Whatever you do, DO NOT change the locks – this could be deemed as an unlawful eviction under the Protection of Eviction Act 1977 – which is a criminal offence. Your tenants are still responsible for making payments for the time they occupy the property and you must still keep to all your landlord and statutory obligations. I receive many enquiries for help from the vast amount of live-in-landlords who due to the economic climate, have resorted to renting out their spare rooms without taking proper advice from professionals who know. It is always wise to seek and pay for the right advice before you consider offering any type of tenancy as this area is complex. It is unfortunate that the tenancy has ended like this, but I would imagine your tenants have been advised by their legal representative and I would suggest you do the same. Disclaimer: Letting a property creates a legal relationship between the Landlord and the Tenant. Therefore, it is not possible to fully include all the relevant legal information in any answers. Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is accurate, but no responsibility can be accepted for any errors or omissions.

Innovate or Die How to Make it in 2013! By Julian

Have a break, have a Kit Kat, 19 different types in fact.

Taking a local approach to candy bars, Nestlé recently launched 19 new Kit Kat flavours in Japan that reflect food specialties of specific districts. Each flavour is sold exclusively in the region for which it was created, making the limited edition Kit Kats popular souvenirs for travellers. Developing an intimate understanding of the local market and targeting it creatively has earned Kit Kat the position of number one confectionery brand in Japan. How else could your brand zero in on local specialties and traditions to drive deeper brand loyalty? (Taken from springwise.com)

Need to get your meat in the middle of the night?

With three stores in Northern Spain, butcher Izarzugaza has installed a vending machine outside its Mundaka shop that sells a variety of meats, sausages, sandwiches and other goods around the clock. Products sold within the machine vary with the season, so summer offerings might include pasta salads while the emphasis is more on meatballs and sausages in the wintertime. hese two, out of loads of examples demonstrate companies in traditional settings who innovated, I mean really innovated to stay ahead of their competition, invigorate their customers and become a talking point across the globe. Nice touch you might think, but no, innovation today is the difference between going down like the titanic and flying like that Twitter tweety bird character thingy. So to get those creative juices flowing here are some ideas! (Thank me later ) 1. Update your product or service for no apparent reason: Apple is a good example of this. We didn’t ask for the iPhone 4 or the iPad, but its here, and with clever advertising we’re all clamouring to get our hands on both. (My iPhone 4 was delivered today – yippee) 2. Do something silly: For the F1 Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button arrived at Silverstone together in a VW camper van! After driving up from McLaren HQ in Surrey at a top speed of 55mph it was a great publicity stunt, silly, but keeps the media focussed on the team. 3. Whilst visiting a client in Berkeley Square in London I saw what looked like a milk float giving away that new Vitamin Water brand. But it wasn’t the free drink that got people queuing, they had a huge

spinning arrow that you gave a whirl and where it landed told you which flavour you’d get! When the promo girl presented you with the bottle she explained the physical or mental benefits of that flavour... Very inexpensive with an original (ahem) spin on things. 4. Get bigger: One of the great things about the internet is that it allows you to “look” as big as your competition even if you’re still working off the kitchen table. Simply ensure that you do as much as you can to get your website looking as professional as possible. Get honest feedback, preferably from strangers, definitely not your mum. 5. Be really useful: What do your customers really like, or really want? What would be really useful to them? It doesn’t have to be anything to do with your product or service, but if you know they feel some pain in their day to day lives that you can fix with little outlay to yourself then you look great and remembered over your competition. For example if you’re a travel agent why not send each customer who books a holiday one of those inflatable pillows or a travel

guide to their destination? You could buy them in bulk and have them branded; something different but related to your audience. 6. Be a Good Samaritan: Are you an online retailer? Tonnes of competition right? Why not offer a small percentage of your sales / profits to a charity of your customer’s choice?! You might even be able to encourage those charities to reciprocate by including your logo in some of their promotional materials. 7. Inform: The majority of Google searches are for information, not purchases. Before a purchase is made consumers’ research, read and get as much information about that product or service. So, become that resource that they can go to, that expert opinion they can rely on before they buy. So that means, blogging, making videos, writing articles, tweeting, getting active on LinkedIn or Facebook and before you know it you’ll be that “go to” guy or gal for your industry.

‘Is This Your New Year?’ By: Esther Austin

2

013 has already descended upon us rather swiftly. I can clearly remember when the clock struck 12am in 1999 ushering in the millennium, with rapid pomp, excitement and celebration. As the world approached the year 2000, there was an air of curious anticipation about this phase in history and an excitement about what changes would happen globally. Theories about what would happen to planet earth, would we see planetary catastrophe, Armageddon, the last judgement or would we enter the Age of Aquarius and see peace guide the planets and love steer the stars? In many ways time seems to have speeded up because here we are now in 2013 and I am sure many of you are asking where did time go? I would therefore like to ask you to think about how conscious you were of how these intervening years affected your life, were you able to fulfil any of your dreams? Are you now living in the fullness of your abundance financially, emotionally, spiritually and physically? Are you enjoying life and following your soul purpose? Or are you still stuck in a rut? Every year symbolises a shift in consciousness which affects what happens in our lives and how we choose to experience those shifts. There are many different perspectives of what each year represent. For many 11.11.2011 was another milestone viewed as a great opportunity to be a part of a universal awakening and to soak up the new energy coming through to the planet and for individuals to come together to make changes in the world and to send heartfelt healing to the planet.

Then some saw 2012 as the real beginning of the Age of Aquarius which was about knowing and truth and really working on the self, being able to look into the mirror of your truth and then to take the courageous step to do something about what was reflecting back at you. This therefore brings us into 2013 and I would like to ask “Are you ready to embrace 2013?” could this be your year? What is it you truly want for your life? Louise Hay, American Author and Metaphysician once said “The point of power is in this present moment” - so right now decide to make the decision as to whether this New Year is your new Year and the Universe will magically go to work to make it happen for you. (In fact I’ve come to the decision that your new life can start at any moment in time, you just have to want it bad enough for transformation to take place.). Everything we desire is there for the taking, but before we can reach out and grasp those opportunities and dreams there are certain changes we have to make within ourselves and sometimes it is hard to know where to start. Mahatma Ghandi once said “Be the Change you want to see in the world.” In essence everything starts and stops with you. Your thoughts, your beliefs, your actions all contribute to where you are now. Are you ready to do some soul searching? Are you in a place of stagnancy wanting change to happen? So maybe a little reflection is required to help you decide what you want in 2013. Therefore,

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

I would like to encourage you to stop what you are doing right now, maybe even grab a piece of paper and jot down what it is you really want for your life? To help expand and empower clients to see the bigger picture and to fully grasp what they can truly aspire to I usually ask this question “If you were to wake up tomorrow and do something that you were passionate about and enjoyed, something that wouldn’t feel like work and something which you did not get paid for what would that be?” I’d then ask my clients to visualise this scenario, emoting the experience I.e. what do they see, how do they feel, what can they hear, encouraging them to experience that wonderful sense of achievement and fulfilment of doing something that they love. Bringing the whole experience alive in their minds. William Shakespeare once said “All things are ready, if our mind be so.” Yet change can often be a pretty scary thing to experience because it means stepping into the unknown. It’s a bit like skydiving for the first time, because as you jump out of that plane you have to trust in the process that your parachute will open up as you glide gently and safety down to earth knowing that someone will be there to support you when you land. Isn’t life like that at times? Taking that leap of faith?

I’m going to leave the following poem with you. Taken from my latest book and audio book – Within Silence, Wisdom Whispers. This is a soulful book of inspiration, encouraging readers to look into the mirror of their truth and soul, encouraging reflection and contemplation. Wherever you are at in your life are you happy and at peace? When you go against the flow of life that is when pain walks by your side. Standing in your own truth now is the only place to be, so whatever it is YOU choose to do with your life, know that it is achievable, know that it is attainable and know that there are tools and resources around you to support you through any process to heal, to forgive and to claim back and restore who you truly are. Like Diana Ross once sang “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand.” Esther Austin www.estheraustinglobal.com

Have you Ever Spoken to Your Soul? Have you ever spoken to your soul Under the covers of your fears? Lighting the lamp of hope Which flickered tentatively As the breath of your prayers Shakily wavered its flames And the tears of your dreams Streamed down into the sheets of your existence? Have you ever spoken to your heart? Which once beat strong to the tune of the Universe Whose strings now lie strewn Amidst the embers of thought and mind (Controllers, destroyers of our truth) A heart whose blood no longer pumps nor gushes Scarlet and ravishing But limps to the tiredness of disillusionment

Become Aware of thought Become Aware of the mind Become Aware of the NOW Have you ever spoken to that space within you And sat with the who of who you are Within a stillness which was so profoundly beautiful That you were able to watch life tippy toe and then flutter On wings made of marsh mellows and strawberries and cream Have you? Have you ever spoken to your Soul Stroking it with words of encouragement, compassion and love Embracing and nurturing every breath that sassily crept from within you And allowing it all to express itself, to expose itself From within you Have you? Have you ever walked out in nature And allowed her to greet you with the kiss of freedom Allowing the sun to gift you with the rays of laughter, hope and love Shining the warmth of liberty right there within your heart and soul Have you ever allowed your Soul To capture the song of bird and silence of the wind Within your wounds, healing your psyche within every inhalation And exhaling the debris from your past into the arms of the Universe Have You? Your biggest productivity killer, and how to get rid of it naturally. By Leah Salmon

T

o a busy parent, professional, entrepreneur or business owner who has a mountain of work to do on any given day, it’s not just having more time that’s important, but being able to be as productive as possible in the time you have available. It’s said that a millionaire is constrained to the same 24hrs that everyone else is, even before they got their millions. So what made them achieve so much more than the vast majority of others? Then you have the parent who manages to get everything done with time to spare at the end of each day, verses the parent who gets to the end of the day, exhausted and not knowing what they’ve achieved if anything, what’s sets them apart? Do you work with someone who somehow manages to get all their work done, well, and then leaves work early with a smile everyday? Or are you the entrepreneur or business owner who has fellow entrepreneurs and business owners who are so on the ball that they make your head spin with

the amount of contracts they secure, networking events they attend, products they bring out and speed at which they grow their business? A few of the traits that the productive and more successful examples share that others don’t are physical energy and mental focus. A lack of mental focus will make it very difficult for you to make the decisions and create and execute the plans to keep you on top of your game. Lack of physical energy will make it difficult for you to do anything with the fantastic plans you’ve devised. And without both, you have what I feel is the biggest productivity killer to a busy person – vegetation time – the need at the end of the day, morning or at various points throughout the day, to just chill out, veg out, switch off, put your feet put, go comatose and not think of anything, or get something into your hand so you can disengage from life temporarily. This vegetation time can suck up 15 – 20mins 3-4 times a day, or big chunks of

During the time that most people are vegetating, their successful counterparts are makin of this time and achieving the goals they both have the potential to. To nip vegetation time in the bud and claim back all the lost time it steals from us, naturally boost your energy using whole foods, natural remedies and lifestyle changes. Simple Let me share with you just one example each of these things that you can try today 1. Whole foods - Think about foods that make you feel tired and sluggish after you’ve eaten them and replace them with foods that make you feel energised and content. If sandwiches at lunch tend to make you sleepy, you not going to have a very productive afternoon of work, but if a hearty soup or big fresh leafy salad packed with beans, chicken pieces, nuts, seeds or olives make your energy levels hit the roof then make it a regular lunchtime treat. 2. Natural Remedies - Lemon essential oil was apparently used in workplaces in China, where it reportedly improved the productivity of workers when it was vaporised into the air. Rosemary oil is also said to have a mentally stimulating effect. 3. Lifestyle changes – Plan 15 -20 min activities that you can do daily that will get you closer to your goal (a quick exercise routine, working on a marketing plan, read a few pages of a personal development book, making lunch for the next day etc). Having a plan like this can give you motivation, which gives you an energy boost itself. Claim back your lost time, get more productive and start living your dream instead of complaining about your present. Remember, if you are ready to take your life to the next level using whole foods, natural remedies and lifestyle changes appropriate to you, get in touch. Take care and stay healthy for now!

She recently published her first novel The Land of Dragor (her agent is former Macmillan Director Clare Hulton) and it was through her book related national freestyle dance competition organised by Juliet Short (of Mezzo Forte) that she was introduced to Peter Branch who has photographed many dancers. Julia is also due to feature in a fun new Channel 4 series which commences in late January/early February and is currently working on her first romance novel as well as continuing with her property business. http://juliasuzuki.com/

STACEY BOURNES

Julia’s best friend Stacey Bournes is an experienced model & singer/ songwriter currently living & recording in L.A. California. Stacey is avidly following her dreams, working as a model and recording her debut album ‘Perfectly Flawed’ This album is a unique and honest, guided tour of her life documenting her whirlwind journey from her very normal upbringing in the Midlands to her present day life in Hollywood. She bares her soul in her music as she talks about the lessons she was blessed with, given to her in the form of devastating loss, heartbreak, fear, rejection and addiction, that had to be endured and overcome in order to turn the dreams she had harboured for so long into a reality. Her passion for Modelling began at the age of 16, when she had her first portfolio pictures done. She fell in love with the art and continued to model in her spare time whilst she worked as a waitress on the weekends

with her Nan to earn extra money. Stacey’s first video will be released this spring; she is now back in L.A. but before she left, the two best friends decided to do the Christmas shoot as a reflection their current lives and creativity.

TERRENCE BROWN

Terrence Brown is a well known couture dress designer. Peter met Terrence few a weeks before the shoot and was invited to his then upcoming premier, a short film and documentary called “Death By Euphoria” at Rio Cinemas Dalston, in which he showcased some of his new pieces. After explaining about the shoot with Julia and Stacey Terrence offered to supply pieces which reflected the girl’s personalities just perfectly. It was as if the garments were destined for the shoot.

C La ROUGE

Birmingham based Fashion Designer C La ROUGE started designing clothes for toy trolls when she was a junior. Modelling in her teens she noticed that she naturally stood out from most young women as she was free thinking enough to wear what she wanted. She is best described as ‘ FEARLESS WEARING’. Her designs reflect the person that she is, and some of her designs are carnival-like displaying her love of art. She likes big and wild designs which reflect her personality. All her designs are made purely by hand. Her neck pieces and dresses complimented Terrence’s Collection well.

Dayal MUA

If this young make-up artist hadn’t stepped in to save the day, the photographs of this shoot would never have existed. Dayal promises to create a look that is flawless, enhances all your features yet still holds elements of your personality making you feel comfortable with your new look and helping your confidence to shine through. Most girls have a love for make-up from a young age. It starts with playing with their mother’s make-up bag and eventually to a young girl finding their own style as a teenager. Dayal’s journey began the same and the love for make-up continued to grow when she started working at Benefit Cosmetics in Selfridges, Birmingham. Everyday, Dayal was faced with different customers, different skin types and different requirements. She listened to each customer, understood their needs and delivered the correct product to them , creating their desired look. “Make-up is more than just picking up a brush and being creative, you have to understand the face and the features and know how to enhance them. It should be used to enhance your natural beauty and portray your personality” ”This thirst for knowledge led Dayal to complete a High Definition Make-Up Course (accredited by the Guild of Beauty Therapists). Dayal learnt the tips and techniques to create a look that is flawless on and off camera. Since then Dayal has worked with many great photographers, models and fashion shows.

FICTION A Jamaican Story Chapter 10 by Clayton Brown

A serialised story of a Jamaican boys journey from the hills of Trelawney to the golden streets of Brixton.

S

ummer 1975 was the warmest since 1947, it was 10 years, 10 years since I had come to this country and it was the summer I would be returning “home”! In the preceding years I had taken on board much of the English norms and culture. They had got me before I was seven years old and I had succumbed to the weight of peer pressure. I was now more of an English boy than many English boys! However, I was still beyond excited when I heard that I was finally going “home”. I was 16 years old and I had just finished re-taking all of the “O” levels I had failed in the 5th year. This time I had sat at the back of the class all year, I had listened, understood and revised. I had gone into all of them with confidence and that confidence had not been misplaced. Every paper I opened was filled with questions I knew! All was well with my world. Then I got the surprise! My sister and I would be going to Jamaica for the summer holidays. Although I had maintained a general memory of my life in Jamaica, I had lost all specific memories. I remembered the names of family but I could not recollect their faces. My sister on the other hand had come to England when she was 13 years old and it was now only five years that she had been away. She was now a young woman and was eager to meet up with old friends. We got £80.00 each and whatever we had of our own saving as our spending money. My sister was told what to give everyone even though all the little parcels came with their own recipient name and content summary. I was given no special task. I can’t say I remember the flight, however, I will never forget the moment the doors of the plane opened and we felt the Jamaican heat. In those days there were no boarding bridges which allowed you to walk directly from the aircraft to immigration. Instead they wheeled a step up to the door and

you walked down onto the runway, then into the building. The heat! It was like a wave that washed over you and surrounded you all at once. You could feel the smell of it! I felt that I had been away too long. I have never forgotten that experience and every time I get off the plane at either of the airports, I get that same feeling. My rich uncle Neville, along with Aunty Naomi and my brother Fuzzy came to collect us. My brother was the most changed to me as we were both still growing 10 years ago and had been since, well at least I had! I had shot up to six feet two inches and my big brother had stopped at five feet eight! It was cool though, the minute he came and hugged me, his height was forgotten. I had my big brother. My uncle brought us straight to country and promised that we would spend a weekend with him before we went home. We drove up winding country roads for about two hours before we reached Lime Tree, a small “one horse town” close to the Manchester/ Trelawney border and also the end of the road in terms of any vehicular form of transportation.

to see, our “Granma”. It had been 13 years since my granny had suffered her stroke but to me she had not changed; she was just as I remembered her. Full of life! We hugged and kissed her and she asked us how we liked England and if we were happy there? When I tried to answer her, she stopped me and told me I would have to read her bible for her at nights as I sounded like the men on the radio. Bed time brought back happy, familiar memories; I was with my brother and two cousins who I had not seen for ten years. We talked into the morning then went to sleep head to toe on the same bed I had slept on ten years ago. I smiled happily to myself and went to sleep with thoughts of shooting some birds tomorrow, with the catapult I had brought with me from England.

We trekked up the hill towards the big family home I had spent the first half of my formative years. It had shrunk! The large house I remembered as a boy was no longer in existence. In this existence it was a two bedroom, dilapidated building with no bathroom and no indoor toilet. But I was still young and this was all a great adventure. When we arrived the reception was all we could hope for. All our family (ok some of the family) were there to welcome us. We greeted them said quick hellos and made our way to see the person we had chiefly come

My Mother and My Brother Roy.

CUISINE We were not in the “Christmas spirit” as the saying goes. We had just returned from a family bereavement in Jamaica on the 22nd and were still not free of the effects of “jet lag”. So Christmas day was the first day we actually ventured out of the house. We had to make a few stops at family and friends before heading to the Cummin Up restaurant’s Christmas giveaway. Organised by restaurateur and entrepreneur Richard Simpson and his family.

his hands-on demonstration of goodwill is in its 5th Year, and Richard continues to be overwhelmed by the amount of support, donations of gifts and local volunteers that are willing to help the community without question. ‘So much of this season has become about consuming and taking, but there is a beauty in giving to those who are outside of our circle of family and friends. Just altering your mind-set slightly to see the joy that can be had from helping others and meeting people at the point of their needs is a joy. The need is great out there for people to be shown and feel the love of God, and this is just one way of doing it. The climax of the whole experience came to light last year when I noticed a man outside

Realising that he didn’t speak English, I beckoned for him to come into the shop and gave him the biggest plate of food. By the grace of God, he left that evening, content and not alone’ This year’s event was made even more special with the attendance of popular film and TV actor Mr Robbie G, who gave his service free of charge to help the indigent. Robbie was sharing and serving food and also took time out to shake hands and speak to the patrons. In fact all the staff family and friends helped to make this initiative a success which Richard is hoping to continue and grow in the years to come. We wish him well.

Christmas Parade at Cott

by Clayto

A

n intimate affair for the mature and sophisticated individual would be my description of the Christmas Parade at Cottons Islington Restaurant on the 29th of December. The night consisted of dinner at one of London’s few high cuisine West Indian restaurants, run by head chef Andrew McIntosh. Then after a sampling a few beverages from their extensively stocked bar we made our way down stairs to a reasonable sized bar with stage and dance floor, very tastefully decorated (although i may have been influenced by the lighting) with seating for most people. The show was opened pretty much on time by Miss Felicity Ethnic, who I along with most of the crowd thought was excellent. She has a good man and therefore, she hasn’t let him out in five

years! Can’t lose him if you don’t let him out! After giving me a goody bag and telling me that I reminded her of someone she knew some time ago, she left the stage to thunderous applause. Next on the “menu” was the velvet chocolate voice of Fil Staughan Luther Vandross tribute. He had the ladies rushing to the dance floor and rocking to hits from the late great star. His set, I thought was a little short. The tables were then cleared from the dance floor and Mr. Tony Fairweather announced the entrance of legendary jazz funk DJ; Gordon Mac. He was immediately tuned in to the crowd kept the vibe mellow. Men were now up and rocking with partners or without. The dancing continued until 3 o’clock and it seemed to me that no one left until they had to. You couldn’t want more of endorsement than that!

Top 5 Fat Loss Tips For the New Year by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

O

K, if you’re main New Years resolution is to lose fat and get yourself in shape, then these top 5 fat loss tips will at least help you on your way. You won’t find me telling you to buy all sorts of supplements, or pop magic fat loss pills in order to lose the fat, for two reasons. 1: They simply don’t work, and 2: It isn’t that easy! What you need to do is exercise and eat PROPERLY! The tips below will have you burning fat in the fastest time, and in the safest way.

TIP 1: GET A BODY COMPOSITION TEST What a body composition test will do is tell you how much of your body weight is fat, and how much is lean tissue. This will be your start point on your fat loss journey, and will help you to keep track of how you are doing. Body composition tests are available at most gyms or health clubs and should be done every 4-6 weeks. You can then make sure you are burning fat, instead of muscle. If you burn muscle, your body will become less metabolically active and will therefore burn less fat at rest.

TIP 2: EAT LITTLE AND OFTEN You may have heard this one before, but it still remains one of the best bits of advice when looking to burn unwanted body fat. Eating smaller portions, more often throughout the day will make you less likely to snack on foods that are laden with ‘empty’ calories. It will also help to keep your metabolism raised and your blood sugar levels regulated. You should aim at eating approximately 5-6 times per day.

TIP 3: RAISE YOUR PROTEIN INTAKE Protein is the building block of muscle, and your diet should be rich in the stuff. It should, in fact,

make up approximately 35 - 40% of your total calorie intake. You will get decent Protein from Chicken, Fish, Lean Beef, Soya, and Eggs. Your total Protein intake should be spread across your 5-6 small meals per day.

TIP 4: EXERCISE INTENSELY Your exercise routines should ideally be short and intense for maximum fat burning effect. Your weight training days should include large muscle groups, and multi joint movements done at maximum intensity for short bursts. The total workout time should not exceed 30 minutes. Your cardio days should be done at a comfortable pace with intense intervals for 1 minute, every 2-3 minutes. The total workout time should not exceed 20 minutes, and should be done either on an empty stomach, or after weight training. (You should never use a weight that is too heavy to complete the set amount of reps, or over exert yourself to a point of failure)

TIP 5: CUT OUT CARBS AFTER 6PM This tip usually shocks people into asking “WHY?”, and the answer is simple. If you eat Carbs before periods of inactivity (for most people, this is after 6pm), you will store the excess Glycogen as FAT! As your main aim is to lose fat, storing it is clearly not a good thing. Your body uses Glycogen as energy for everyday tasks, so eating it throughout the day is not an issue as you are reasonably active during the day, meaning you will burn the excess Glycogen. If you take in a lot of Carbs before sitting in front of the telly, it will not get burned, and will turn into the spare tyre that you are trying to avoid! My advice would be Chicken or Fish, and some steamed veggies for your evening meal. Leave the bowl of Pasta for tomorrow’s lunch.

What to Watch in

2013

Kieran Etoria-King

A list of sporting stories already on this year’s calendar. by Kieran Etoria-King

AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS

making it an annual, instead of bi-annual, event, but for now, it should be well worth a watch for football fans.

he African Cup of Nations kicks off again. Zambia won this tournament last year, against all expectation, so attempting to call it this year would be both impossible and foolish. With Spain’s current total domination of the Europeans scene, Africa’s is possibly the most competitive of all of the major continental football tournaments, and it is a shame that the rest of the world does not show it more attention.

The tournament was originally supposed to be hosted by Libya, but CAF chose to revoke this due to the unrest in that country. It will now kick off in South Africa on January 19.

T

There is star quality on show everywhere, and as well as well known players such as Drogba and the Toure brothers, the tournament is a great showcase for the unsung African-based players. Sadly, European clubs and fans simply see it as a nuisance, stealing away their best players for a month in the middle of the season and sending them back tired or injured. (The exception of this will be Arsenal, who will no doubt be glad to see the back of Gervinho.) There is a danger that CAF (Confederation of African Football) will saturate the appetite for the tournament by now

ANDY MURRAY Expect a big year from Andy Murray. The Scot reached his first Wimbledon final in 2012 and won an Olympic gold medal in 2012, and won his first major in the autumn. This could push him on to really rock the world of tennis. If he can ride the momentum, 2013 will be a historic year for British tennis.

RAHEEM STERLING Another man expecting a big year is Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling. The winger from Jamaica, who only turned 18 in December, made his debut in the spring of 2012, and has since gone on to become a fixture in the historic club’s first team, with nearly 30 appearances and one goal under his belt already. He has also followed in the footsteps of fellow

Jamaican-born former Liverpool winger John Barnes by making his debut for England. “I’m nowhere near where I think I can be scoring-wise and the more attacking side of the game. There’s a lot more to come,” he told the Mirror in his first ever interview. On the subject of exciting young wingers, Crystal Palace star WIlfried Zaha is about to be subject of an £8 million bid from Manchester United, and has garnered interest from all around the top of the Premier League. Meanwhile Tom Ince, son of former United, Liverpool and England midfielder Paul, is set for a £6million return from Blackpool to Liverpool, the club he left for just £250 000 in 2011.

JAMAICA As I mentioned a couple of months ago, Jamaica are now the only team left in the World Cup Qualifying from the Caribbean, having made it into a challenging final six that, of course, includes the USA and Mexico. The Reggae Boyz are theoretically at their strongest in years, but they failed to get out of their group in the Caribbean Cup in December, so their finishing in the top 3 of this 6 is far from guaranteed. They will resume the campaign with the most difficult of challenges, Mexico away in the 100,000 capacity Azteca, on February 6. This game is unlikely to be shown on television, but should be available online. Follow the official Jamaican Football Federation Twitter account @ItsTheJFF to keep up with coverage of the build up.

THE PREMIER LEAGUE As last year’s deadline day showed, the Premier League remains as unpredictable as ever. West Brom and Stoke are in the top 8, Newcastle are sliding back towards the Championship, and Rafael Benitez is Chelsea manager. However, I’m going to go out on a limb and say Manchester United will win it. City have been lackluster compared to their bombastic performance last season, and as much as it pains me to admit it as a Liverpool fan, I expect Benitez to lead Chelsea into a close second. Expect to see Abramovich reach into his bottomless pockets again in the January transfer window. I hold out hope for another thrilling final day, will take place on Sunday July 19.

SUMMER The summer 2012 has spoiled us, with Euro 2012, the Olympics, etc, etc. Both of these will be absent this year, and 2013 will be relatively quiet by comparison. The football this summer will be provided by the CONCACAF Gold Cup, comprising the North and Central America and the Caribbean. Due to their failure at the Caribbean Cup, Jamaica will not be involved. Instead Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Martinique, and winners Cuba will travel to the United States from the region. Trinidad and Tobago are the highest ranked nation of the four, but finished runners up to Cuba in the Caribbean Cup. The tournament kicks of on July 7.
