BLESS DA LORD!! JayJay Born 2 Sing :

The Man, The Music and his Lord by Coral Consciouslee

I

t is safe to say this interview has been a long time coming! I first saw Jason Johnson a.k.a JayJay Born 2 Sing, at the finals of Reggae Star Factor 2014 in North West London. At the time, watching the proceedings, I was sure that Chardell Rhoden – another finalist – would win. That was until I saw and heard JayJay sing on the stage! He had stage presence, charisma, amazing vocals and star quality all-in-one! The judges had a very difficult choice to make and Chardell Rhoden did win the competition, but I made a mental note of JayJay. Our paths would cross again at the memorial of Yvonne SwabyRiley where I finally introduced myself to JayJay and informed him that I would be watching his singing career with much interest. Over the last couple of years my interest has turned into a kind of fascinated admiration. JayJay’s continued rise as one of the UK’s top reggae singers shows no signs of abating. Panache E Magazine managed to interrupt JayJay’s hectic schedule for a few hours to find out more about this unique individual whose life so far has clearly influenced the music he produces. Jason Johnson was born on 15th March 1974. He grew up in church with his Grandparents. I asked him when did he realise he could sing? “It was at the age of 3! I was forced by my grandmother to go and sing at church. I don’t remember the song, but it was my cousin and I who went to the front of the church. Just as we started to www.panacheoccasions.com /

sing my cousin decided to run off and left me to sing by myself. That was my first time. I received an encore and had to sing again!” Unbeknown to many, a star was born. Jason wrote his first song at 12 years old, under the name Jason King. At the age of 13 he formed a dance group with his brother and three cousins called Jason and the Argonauts. Argonauts?? “The name was given to us by a cousin, I still don’t know why!” At the age of 19, JayJay formed a dance duet with a school friend who went by the name of Ninja Steppas. Soon they were opening acts for the likes of Chaka Demas, Shabba Ranks and Sanchez. JayJay began to take his singing seriously in 2008. “2008 was a time was when if you remember, we were losing our children almost daily – in particular black boys – to knife crime. This affected me deeply and I thought if I have the ability to speak about this through song then I would do so; so I decided to write – and sing” In 2009 JayJay’s strong faith in God was tested. JayJay fell seriously ill and was diagnosed as having Multiple Sclerosis. “Basically I was unbalanced in my walking, always feeling tired and my body was overheating. I had headaches, wasn’t able to sleep at night and my left eye dropped. In the space of 3 weeks I went to four different GPs. The fourth doctor was the one that sent me for the scan. I was sent home with medication but it got worse and then I was diagnosed. I was bedridden for 11 months. My mum’s husband would look after me during the day, whilst my mother was at work and my mum would come home and look after me during then night. I had to learn to walk and talk again, I couldn’t really have a conversation. 6 DECEMBER 2016 / www.panacheoccasions.com

I had to learn to feed myself again as well.” From 2010 to 2013, JayJay kept up his persistent work ethic by producing a series of mixed tapes entitled Elevation, Unstoppable and Rollercoaster. 2013 proved to be a very special year for JayJay. His talents and abilities did not go unnoticed; he had the opportunity to be backing singer for KC & JoJo “I was part of a theatre production in 2012 and I got a call from one of the guys that I was working with about the audition and he told me about it, also starring in a theatre production called “You Aint Seen Nothing Yet” - https://youtu. be/01pGEQXRpSI. JayJay’s songwriting ability shone in 2014 when he was asked to write the theme song for a short South African film called KingMakers. I have made mention of JayJay’s talents and abilities because he definitely has more than one string that he can add to his bow. JayJay is also a photographer (Captured By Jay) and has regular bookings for special occasions. As if that wasn’t enough, JayJay is also a qualified chef – those who have seen his many youtube videos, will testify to his love of food!

What is inspiring for me is that JayJay always - as he says- “keeps it moving”. 2016 saw the birth of JayJay’s own record label called “Bless Da Lord Music”. “The aim of my label first and foremost is to promote myself. I realise through working with many producers that I can help myself. Eventually down the line I will start scouting for clean and talented artists.” As I write, we are all just calming down after the phenomenal success of JayJay’s album launch “Purpose & Reason”. Organised through producer Gary Digitech, the launch took place at The Bedford, Balham on October 28th 2016. After the introduction by fellow artist and actress Lorna Gee, one would think that this was indeed a superstar coming to the stage! The event was well organised, with JayJay producing song after song that kept the audience enthralled. Even more amazing was that 99% of the songs were gospel. Was there a specific reason for this? “I was raised in Church so the seed had been sewn from early -I would say from the age of 3 to the age of 12 - but like a lot of youngsters/teenagers I rebelled at the age of 12 and stopped going. When I left church I wrote my first song at 12 years old. I can’t do without God! My whole life, my whole being is about God. So it flows through my music and my conduct.” The JayJay train keeps moving! He recently appeared on the stage of the Miss Caribbean UK 2016 finals on 3rd December 2016. I enjoyed the interview so much I almost forgot that it wasn’t a conversation! As we finished the interview I asked JayJay what was his favourite inspirational saying? You guessed it, he said “Bless Da Lord!”
