Local family wanted to go Back in Time for BBC Two! Wall to Wall Television, the makers of Long Lost Family, Who Do You Think You Are and Back in Time for the Weekend are making a fantastic new living history series. Back in Time for Brixton takes one 2nd or 3rd generation Black British family through 60 years of cultural and social shifts, charting the story of how African-Caribbean immigration has changed British culture and society. From the arrival of the first families of the Windrush generation, to active recruitment from London Transport and the NHS to the slow and sometimes questionable appearance of black faces on British TV. Back in Time for Brixton will celebrate and explore Black British history and its place and influence in British popular culture. With Brixton as our base, one adventurous family will be fast-forwarded through 60 years of history, starting with no mobiles and roughly the same amount of money and possessions that their ancestors might have brought with them on arrival. The family will start by spending their first night in one of the actual locations newly arrived immigrants were sent to then they need to start jobs, find somewhere to live and the adventure begins as they journey through 6 decades of history, wearing the clothes, listening to the music and eating the food that previous generations enjoyed. As they experience the changing fashions and fads we’ll trace Black British history and the ways it shaped the modern Britain we all live in. hose of us who have the opportunity to watch early evening TV will no doubt (unless you only watch BBC) have watched, “The Chase” and if so you will be cognisant of the subject of this month’s feature interview; Mr Shaun Wallace, aka “The Dark Destroyer”. Shaun Anthony Linford Wallace born 2/6/1960 and hailing from Brent in North London. Shaun Qualified as a barrister in 1986 and this is his 30th year since passing the bar. He represents clients in high-profile criminal cases up and down the country. He is, however, better known for his exploits in the world of “Quizzing” A finalist on quiz shows such as “Are you an Egghead?, he’s also been on The Weakest Link and Fifteen to One. A small-known fact is that one of Shaun’s first forays in to quizzing on TV was his appearance on Jerry Springer’s show “Greed” where he and his team won £50,000. Of course the zenith of his quizzing career before The Chase was winning Mastermind in 2004 where he was known for his knowledge of football in particular FA Cup Finals. He’s the first and only black winner of Mastermind let alone of British Caribbean descent. Can you tell us about your Jamaican heritage?
I’m very proud of my Caribbean and in particular my Jamaican heritage. My parents were both born in Jamaica. My father’s from the parish of Clarendon whilst my mother hails from the parish of St. Ann’s.
Do you still have contact with Jamaica?
Yes of course. I go and visit Jamaica every Christmas for a fortnight to rest and recharge my batteries. In recent years I’ve been using Jamaica’s natural beauty as my inspiration to finish my autobiography which I’m hoping will be out this year! When I go back I always make sure that I visit my family and catch up with my aunts, uncles and cousins!
When was the last time you were there, and what do you think about the economic and political climate at the moment?
I was there last Christmas. The PNP were in power when I was there but I know that the JLP won the recent general election in February which meant that Andrew Holness has become the Prime Minister. I think that having a 2-party political system has led to a relatively stable political and economic situation and I believe that it’s no greater nor worse than the rest of the Caribbean.
Were your parents in the legal profession and what made you want to be a lawyer?
No my mother was actually a nurse and my father worked in a factory. I wanted to become a lawyer from the age of 11 and much of this was borne out of watching legal programmes such as Crown Court and 8

Rumpole and Bailey as a youngster. As I learned more about the legal profession I fell in love with it as I realised that as a lawyer I could use my skills to help others which is very important to me. I also quite liked the idea of dressing up in a gown and wig!
Do you find it easy to remember facts/ general knowledge or is it something you practice?
I don’t believe that I’m any smarter nor have a better memory than anyone else but I have a passion for learning. I began reading about things that I’m interested in and that’s why I remember them. I’ve always believed that being passionate about the things you’re learning about as being the key to a good memory
Do you try to use your status/ influence to help the BAME community in any way?
Before I was on Mastermind or The Chase I was a part-time lecturer for 14 years at Hackney College which was college with a large BAME student body. I thoroughly enjoyed this as I believe it’s very important to try and inspire the next generation coming through. Since I’ve become more well-known and in the public eye I have an even greater responsibility so that people can climb up it and go past me. This is very important to me! I have tried to help the BAME community but I’m particularly passionate about helping anyone who wants to better themselves and achieve great things regardless of colour.

Have you experienced discrimination and if so how have you dealt with it?
I’ve never personally been directly discriminated against on the ground of my colour or race. Although I have no doubt that it has been practiced in more nuanced and subtle forms. My only response to this discrimination is to not allow it to be an excuse not to achieve mine nor anyone else’s ambitions but we must use our talent and skills to rise above it.
Historically there have been few black faces on TV, from your vantage point, do you think times are changing?
I do believe that times are changing but of course there’s a long way to go. The most important thing is to have positive role models in the media. I think that previously when we only had Sir Trevor McDonald and
Sir Lenny Henry we now have more positive role models on TV such as David Harewood, Idris Elba and Adrian Lester and these are certainly steps in the right direction. I’m currently watching Undercover with Sophie Okonedo and Adrian Lester which I urge all of you to watch to see their acting brilliance and to learn more about the Met Police and the British legal system
What do you think is the reason that US TV does not seem to have a problem with black programmes on their National stations?
I think that black people in America have had a very different experience to get to the position that they’ve gotten to in terms of their active civil right movements which began in the 50’s and 60’s. They also have a variety of living influential and well-known civil rights leaders such as Reverend Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson which is very

different to what we have had in the UK. I hope that TV shows such as Empire and Black-Ish may go some way towards changing some of the negative perceptions of black people in America. Although I think that the ultimate pinnacle for America was voting for their first Black president Barack Obama and hopefully this could be a turning point for America in its history
eloquent and elegant. It really was a privilege to be asked to be a judge. I would love to be a judge again if I were ever fortunate enough to be asked again!
What is your favorite TV show?
This is a tough one! I love football so Match of the Day is up there but I also love quiz shows such as University Challenge and Mastermind. I also spend quite a lot of time watching interesting historical documentaries as well.
Your holding a dinner party, who would be your ideal guests and why?
In my house I have a mural of black idols who have been my inspiration for my whole adult life so I would invite some of them along. Some of these idols include Harriet Tubman. Marcus Garvey, Tommie Smith (1968 Olympics Black Power Salute), Malcolm X and of course Muhammad Ali. These people have all inspired me in different ways so I would love to hear from them and learn from them.
Would you like to be a judge one day?
No I wouldn’t I’m very happy being a barrister and being a judge isn’t someone that I want to do at this point.
You were a judge for Miss Caribbean UK 2016, what did you think of the experience and would you do it again?
It was a fantastic experience to judge my first ever beauty contest. All of the ladies were so 10

“I did it for Daniel.”
CLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust) co-founder Orin Lewis OBE became one of the millions of people participating in the Virgin Money London Marathon in memory of his son Daniel DeGale on Sunday 24 April. Daniel captured the hearts of the nation when he appeared on the national news, aged six in April 1993. Six years later (June 1999), Daniel went onto become the first black individual in the UK to receive a lifesaving stem cell (bone marrow) transplant from an unrelated donor. Although he beat his fight against leukaemia, Daniel died in October 2008 from multiple organ failure. His legacy is ACLT, which was founded by his parents Orin and Beverley De-Gale OBE.

Author - Dr Natasha Lightfoot
Natasha Lightfoot is an Assistant Professor of History and a Faculty Research Fellow of the Institute for African American Studies at Columbia University. She teaches Caribbean, Atlantic World, and African Diaspora History focusing on the subjects of slavery and emancipation, black identities, politics, and cultures.
Dr. Lightfoot received her B.A. in History from Yale University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in History from New York University. She has received fellowships from the Yale Gilder-Lehrman Centre for the Study of Slavery, Emancipation & Resistance, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Ford Foundation. She has published articles in the CLR James Journal and Slavery & Abolition. In addition to her scholarship, Natasha remains dedicated to the Caribbean communities from which she has come, and to expanding knowledge about the Caribbean and about Black history as a whole. She has led many Black history workshops with New York City public school teachers and has mentored many college-aspiring Bronx high school students. She also has lectured on Antiguan and Barbudan history at numerous conferences and community events both in New York City and in Antigua. She serves on several academic and community organisation boards, including the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora and the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission. Since 2005 she has been married to Matthew Swain, a radiologic technologist at NYU Cancer Centre, and together they have two sons, Evan and Avery. The richness of her heritage has always driven her throughout her career, and she admires her parents most of all for always encouraging her to succeed and to never forget her Antiguan and Barbudan roots.

About the book: Troubling Freedom
In 1834 Antigua became the only British colony in the Caribbean to move directly from slavery to full emancipation. Immediate freedom, however, did not live up to its promise, as it did not guarantee any level of stability or autonomy, and the implementation of new forms of coercion and control made it, in many ways, indistinguishable from slavery. In Troubling Freedom, Dr. Lightfoot tells the story how Antigua’s newly freed black working people struggled to realise freedom in their everyday lives, prior to and in the decades following emancipation. She presents freed people’s efforts to form an efficient workforce, acquire property, secure housing, worship, and build independent communities in response to elite prescriptions for acceptable behaviour and oppression. Despite its continued efforts, Antigua’s black population failed to convince whites that its members were worthy of defined and created freedom through quotidian acts of survival and occasional uprisings, Lightfoot complicates conceptions of freedom and the general narrative that landlessness was the primary constraint for newly emancipated slaves in the Caribbean.

heree Miller, 19, was crowned Miss Barbados UK 2016 on Saturday 7th May , with Karina Jemmott, 24, the first runner up and Quesha Nicholls, 29 the second runner up. The pageant came to an outstanding end on Saturday with each contestant putting their best foot forward throughout the night. During their three month intensive training and preparation for Coronation Night, the delegates were judged in various segments; with the winners for each segment announced on the night. First runner up Karina Jemmot took the win for Beauty with a passion, Bajan Chef Queen and Beach Beauty. Second runner up Quesha Nicholls came first in Most Improved and the Talent Segment.

he song "Purple Rain" begins with an apology. "I never meant to cause you any sorrow, never meant to cause you any pain." Prince; performs; halftime; show; Super Bowl XLI; football; game See Prince Perform 'Purple Rain' During Super Bowl In the context of the movie Purple Rain, that could have meant Prince's "The Kid" character apologizing for betraying and hitting his girlfriend Apollonia. Or Prince could have been channeling the guilt of the Kid's father, Francis L., like Prince's own father, a struggling musician. The fictional film version had hurt his wife and his son, and ultimately himself, with his abuse and his controlling nature. Or the Kid could be talking to his parents, the mother he didn't protect or the father he disappointed, and apologizing to them just for not being a different child, one who could take all of them away from their problems. Whatever the context, "Purple Rain" is a song about pain, which is unusual for the kind of iconic global hit it became. The singer is sorry for the trouble he's caused. He's sorry that he's ruined things. And even if it's too late to make things better, he wants you to know that he wishes he could.
He wishes we could go to a place where it could all be washed away. The paradise he picked, Purple Rain, doesn't exist on Earth, but he passionately believes in it. In the song, he uses his guitar and his voice to scale every possible note in search of it up there. He frantically plays and sings his way higher and higher, soaring in an ecstasy of creation until for a moment we're all there with him in the Purple Rain, his characteristically weird name for heaven, where everything is forgiven and we all love each other again. Thematically it's a little like John Lennon's "Imagine," I guess, except the song wasn't political but personal. Prince didn't point the finger at priests or corporations or people who made war as the obstacles to a better world. He started with himself. He apologized, and then he tried to make things better the only way he knew how, by using his extraordinary gifts to make beautiful things. Prince's greatest moment may have come on February 4, 2007, at halftime of Super Bowl XLI. It was a miserable game. Not only was it not a close contest, but it was played in a torrential downpour that made the game hard to see, and an ordeal for the spectators who of course had been bled for every last cent en route to their seats. the field for the most part didn't rise to the challenge of the conditions, and played a sloppy game, adding to the impression of an overhyped, expensive letdown. Then Prince came out at halftime and acted like he didn't even notice the weather. He started with his usual concert-opening anthem, "Let's Go Crazy," and then did something nobody ever does at Super Bowls: He forgot to promote himself. He played other peoples' songs, a weird mix including everything from Hendrix/Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" to Queen's "We Will Rock You" to "Best of You" by the Foo Fighters, a band whose members had no idea this was coming. He wasn't selling himself, just music.

rince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor.

He was a musical innovator and known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup, and wide vocal range. Rolling Stone ranked Prince at number 27 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists – "the most influential artists of the rock & roll era".
In the early 1990s, Prince became embroiled in a contractual battle with Warner Bros. For that reason, in 1993, he changed his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol, also known as the "Love Symbol", was soon referred to as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince", and began releasing new albums at a faster pace to remove himself from contractual obligations to Warner Bros.
Prince was born in Minneapolis and developed an interest in music as a young child. He secured a recording contract with Warner Bros. at the age of 18, and released his album For You in 1978. His 1979 album Prince went platinum, and his next three records—Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)—continued his success, showcasing Prince's trademark of prominently sexual lyrics and blending of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as the Revolution and released Purple Rain, which served as the soundtrack to his eponymous 1984 film debut and was met with widespread acclaim. After releasing the albums Around the World in a Day (1985) and Parade (1986), The Revolution disbanded, and Prince released
He released five records between 1994 and 1996 before signing with Arista Records in 1998. In 2000, he began referring to himself as "Prince" again. He released 16 albums after that, including The Rainbow Children (2001). His final album, HITnRUN Phase Two, was first released exclusively on the Tidal streaming service on December 11, 2015. ritish-Born Nigerian Georgina Fihosy is the creative entrepreneur behind the African Inspired greeting cards company Special Touch Designs which seeks to celebrate the diversity of the UK. Her gift for designing and hand-finishing greeting cards, which merge bold African wax print fabrics and quality textured boards, was realised in the summer of 2015. Whilst on maternity leave from her profession as a Pharmacist she made the decision to nurture her creativity and create a brand that would celebrate her Nigerian heritage and culture, showcase her love for fabric and design and recognise the diversity of Britain. Georgina currently works full time as a clinical pharmacist and juggles life as a mother, wife, home maker and entrepreneur. She was brought up in a single parent household by a strong Nigerian mother, who raised five children and taught her to dream big, live life to the full and be open to opportunities; which is an ethos that Georgina lives by. “Being a woman should never be a barrier to success.” states Georgina. London Born Ghanaian Entrepreneur Launches World’s First Global African-Owned Stationery Company Christopher Osei – Frimpong grew up in South London, UK, and has had an eye for business from an early age.
